JeanPierre’s
1970 911 2.2 S/T THE MEET. I met Jean-Pierre in 2010 during a track day at Haute-Saintonge track, near Poitiers. It was the first time I drove my superb Porsche Spyder on a track. Early in the afternoon there was a red flag. Everybody had to go back to the pits. The orange early 911 had a mechanical gearbox issue and was sadly parked outside the paddock. I was walking around and heard the driver of the faulty car talking to one of his pals wondering how he would get back to his home near Paris. I jumped into the chat and told the man I lived really close to his house and could give him a lift. We started to talk, talk and talk again about our cars and I discovered the passion of Jean-Pierre about this very special car. A special car for a special man. One month later, I crashed my Spyder at Val de Vienne track and Jean-Pierre offered me the co-driver seat to his car for the rest of the day and then gave me a lift home, the story repeats. Very soon after our departure from the track, Jean-Pierre asked me if I wished to drive his car. You can guess my answer‌ After a few minutes of driving, I decided to sell my Spyder and buy a classic 911.
04 D ECEMBER 2013 WINTER
Believe me, Jean-Pierre’s car is magic, and let me explain the reasons why. THE DISCOVERY. August 1980, Jean-Pierre passed a fuel station near Paris and saw this orange car, and was immediately attracted. The car was for sale, and Jean-Pierre asked a knowledgeable friend in sports cars to check it. The test was positive and Jean-Pierre decided to buy it. Remember, we were in the 80’s, and the early Porsches are not very popular, exterior colors were less flashy. Despite the criticism of his friends, needless to say, he is under the spell of his Signal Orange 1970 911S 2.2. Early along, JP was wondering why his car was missing the passenger sun visor and the glove box cover. A roll cage is installed, part of the rear bumper is missing, there was neither a hole nor a pull to open the rear deck lid, the engine lid closed with two tie-downs, there is a fuel heating system, and few more things. However the car was bought to be a weekend driver, no big deal. The Oscars and fog lights were removed; the rear bumper is completed with the missing part. The car slowly found its way to a normal S configuration. In 1995, Jean-Pierre joigned the Porsche Club de France (now Club Porsche Motorsport France) to begin driving on various tracks. Even if JP started to feel good on track (and believe me he is fast), an early 911 with a 2.2 engine even in S livery is not so fast compared to the various 993 and 964 RSs. A series of changes were initiated in 2002, as well as a complete repainting. One day the engine broke, which made JP wonder about making some improvements for the track: the 2.2 was replaced by a 3.2, coupled with a 915 gearbox, a stunt bar, new 29mm rear torsion bars, and a 22mm roll bar were added, along with new Bilstein shocks, new tie rods, a new exhaust (muffler and headers), a new EFI program giving 234HP and a max rev at 7200rpm, new gearbox ratios, a limited slip differential, and new 16-inch Fuchs wheels. The rear wiper was removed, as well as the original and optional radio. The Recaro seats were replaced by more modern buckets, and external S chrome trim was installed.
In 2005, Jacques Crubile (ex Siffert/Herman 910 owner-www.crubile-sport.com) shared his curiosity with Jean-Pierre about his 911. Jacques is quite sure this is a competition car and asked JP for authorization to contact Jürgen Barth to find out more. On January 24th, 2005 the verdict is in: this is a very rare 2.2 S/T. Only seven 911 2.2 S/T 1970 were known by Barth, and it was confirmed by Porsche Motorsport that 911 030 1125 is an S/T; so an eighth had just been added. You will find 911 030 1125 in the latest edition of Jurgen Barth’s book as a 2.2 S/T.
Yet there is still more mystery around JP’s S/T: was the car engaged in competition or races?
WHO OWNED IT? Jean-Pierre doubts his car has any prestigious background, because of the COA: the car was ordered with a radio, antenna, and a rear wiper. Who would do that? THE WAY FORWARD. Dijon-Prenois, Val de Vienne, Nogaro, Le Catellet, Magny-Cours, Lurcy-Levis, Le Mans Bugatti and 24hours, Spa Francorchamps, Linas-Montlhery and many more have had the privilege to get a bit of rubber from JP’s tyres, every year since 1995. You should watch Jean-Pierre driving his beautiful Orange S/T, it is smooth, and fast and you can feel the slow rear slippage effect, and how he managed to heel and toe (in 5 steps of course). As a final word, Jean-Pierre is an enthusiastic, nice and gentle person who owns a beautiful car and shares his passion with pleasure.
