CRAIG DUTHIE’S 1973 911E

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY CRAIG DUTHIE SEA DELIVERY PHOTO- UNKNOWN

A Mid-Year 1973 2.4 911E, delivered new to Hong Kong.

I purchased the car in 2003 from Guy Inglis in New Zealand. The car remains in its original right hand drive form and has been repainted in its original 8080 Silver Metallic. The engine and gearbox are original to the car but have also been rebuilt. I graduated to the Porsche from a number of British sports cars: Triumph GT6 and TR3A and Morris Mini Cooper Ss. My first real interest in the marque came at the Victorian Winton Historic race meeting in the late ‘80s where a Viper Green 2.2 S was parked in the lot beside my Triumph TR3A. A photo of that car remained on my office notice board for many years. A career change and an interstate move prompted the sale of the TR3A, but this allowed funds to begin the hunt for my 911. Having read as much as I could about the marque, the decision was made to look for a pre-impact bumper car, a 1969 to 1973 T or E as the S was beyond my budget. Dead keen on it being Viper Green, I looked at a number of local cars that needed significant work or were far removed from their original spec, particularly 911Es that were missing their MFI.

08 J UNE 2013 SUMMER

Having just about given up the search locally, I was at work very early one morning and came across the Porsche Club of New Zealand Web Site (www.porsche.org.nz). On it there was a text only ad “1973 911 2.4 E RHD Silver Hong Kong delivery” etc. It was 0200 local time, so 0400 New Zealand time and I figured a phone call was best left for a couple of hours later! I work as a Harbour Pilot in the port of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. A couple of ships to move would put me back in the office about 0600 local, 0800 NZ–perfect. Back to the office and a phone call to the vendor revealed a car that ticked most of the boxes–it wasn’t Viper Green, but it was a genuine RHD car in very original, but tired, condition. Some hurried e-mails, more phone calls and the car was mine. The car arrived in Australia in November 2003. Unfortunately, the only local Porsche specialist retired virtually the day I purchased the car. New-

castle is about two hours north of Sydney with a number of independent Porsche specialists, and whilst I am an enthusiastic owner of these cars, it’s fair to say I have little mechanical knowledge and even less ability. At the same time, as I was lamenting my decision to be the owner of this complex mechanical motoring icon, Simon Greenwood was opening the doors of his Porsche specialty workshop, Autowerks, (http://autowerks.com.au) on the Central Coast about 40 minutes south of me, deciding on a sea change to his own business from the main dealer network and a larger independent Porsche workshop. The car was delivered from the ship to Autowerks and with a few issues sorted out, it was first registered in Australia on the 4th of January, 2004. What was immediately apparent, that whilst “complete,” the car was going to need some TLC sooner rather than later. In May 2004 with 83,800 miles on the clock, the engine and gearbox had had enough and the decision was made to rebuild them. My plan

was always to keep the car as close to its original specification as possible, so nothing fancy for the engine, genuine pistons and cylinders, service the cylinder heads, Time-Sert the crankcase, clean and service the MFI system and re-build the original 4-speed transmission. Besides regular servicing and the occasional adjustment of the MFI system, the car was without fault for the next two years. Knowing that the car was tired, I planned to re-build the body when funds allowed. It was during this two year period of saving, accumulating parts and educating myself on the finer points of a 911E restoration, that I came across Clyde Boyer from the TYP901 Register in Melbourne, Victoria (www.typ901.org). Many of you will know Clyde from the Early 911S Registry and R Gruppe forums and as the owner/restorer of some outstanding early Porsche cars. Clyde was flogging some parts from the roof space (treasure trove) above his garage and he introduced me to both registers.

“What the hell was my Porsche doing on this island with no more than 30 kilometres of road on it?

911E

In 2006 the car is taken off the road again. Autowerks pulls it apart and a local panel beater, Steve Kennedy Smash undertakes the restoration of the body with me in the project/ fund management role. There are some great photos of the process here: http:// autowerks.com.au/porsche_projects/index.html The car was taken back to a bare tub, removing everything: wiring loom, fuel and brake lines, the lot, the body was soda blasted and rust repairs were done. The car was painted with Glasurit clear over the base coat in Silver Metallic and then the whole lot was put back together.

10 J UNE 2013 SUMMER

This was a 6 month job, which I thought was pretty good, all things considered. Since then, the car has proven reliable and enjoyable, shift work allowing me to use the car more than just on weekends, with regular mid-week blasts around some of the deserted country roads local to me. Earlier this year I was thinking of building a 356 Outlaw, much along the lines of Marco’s “Frankenstein,” but this would necessitate selling the 2.4. As part of the process, one prospective purchaser asked for more history on the car to verify its original 97,000 odd miles. When I purchased the car, it came with a lot of documentation from its life in New Zealand, but nothing earlier than that and with this information I always presumed the car went from Hong Kong to NZ directly. One of the nice things that came with the car was the grille badge from the HK Motor Sports Club. (www.mschk.com.hk). Pulling all of the paper work out for the car, I was checking over the original Certificate of Registration for NZ which I knew showed the original importer

into NZ. It also showed that its original NZ registration was FERRY! The only word to describe what I read next is stunned; I was truly stunned to see that the car had been imported to NZ from the Norfolk Islands. For those of you that haven’t seen the thread on the Early 911S Registry, Norfolk Island is a tiny island 1,400 kilometres east of Australia between New Zealand and New Caledonia, in the middle of nowhere! (http:// www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?84786Delivery-by-Sea-....&highlight=norfolk) What the hell was my Porsche doing on this island with no more than 30 kilometres of road on it? The NZ registration document shows that the car was first registered in NZ by William Walter Hallett. There can’t be too many W. W. Hallett’s in NZ, can there? And with a couple of mouse clicks–bingo–only one is living in Masterton NZ. So this crazy person makes the phone call, “This is Craig Duthie, if this is the William Walter Hallett that owned a Porsche on Norfolk Island in the ‘80s would you give me a ring, I’ve got your car, if not, ignore this crazy person….” I honestly didn’t think anything would come of it, but late that same day the phone rang and it was Bill, and yes, it was his car. Whilst going through some paperwork recently, he came across the original delivery document and maintenance record, would I like them? I could barely contain my excitement at the news, “Yes, absolutely!” About a month passed and I had sort of lost hope that anything would come of our conversation, but Bill was good to

his word. In March this year a package turned up in my post box containing the original documents, as promised: a whole sheaf of paperwork from the car’s time on Norfolk Island and New Zealand and THAT photo of the car being un-loaded on to the jetty at Norfolk Island! (Editor’s note: The water is so shallow around the island, everything has to be off loaded from

large ships and transferred to the island in small boats). The documents show the car was delivered to Oliver Kwan in Hong Kong on the 15th of December 1972. Jebsen Motors were the Porsche concessioners in Kowloon and maintained the car until September 1978. There is then little written information about

the car until Bill’s records start, when he purchased the car from Nick Fisher in 1987. Anecdotally, the car was imported to Norfolk Island by Max Inglis in 1984 and sold shortly thereafter to Nick Fisher, the record keeping on Norfolk Island does not provide any more information than that. Today the car remains in my care; I remain passionate about the car, its history and that of the Porsche marque.
