SCRATCH AND SNIFF AROMA PIGMENTS

NEW

All 'scratch and sniff' products – notably perfume sample in magazines – use aromas carried in millions of micron-size spheres that release their contents if burst. The microcapsules are mixed with a suitable carrier ink and coated onto paper or card. Rubbing or scratching the dried ink ruptures some of the capsules to release aroma. Supplied in a plastic syringe, the raw water–soluble pigments can be mixed with acrylic media (or other aqueous–based paints such as water colours) and painted or printed onto a suitable surface. Suggested mixing ratio is one part pigment to seven parts of acrylic media. Strawberry fragranced.

Use the sorting circles to get your students to sort a variety of foods (eg, jelly babies, salt and vinegar crisps, lemon slices and onion) into the 4/5 taste groups. Ask them to try placing the food on different areas of the tongue to encorage discussion on the tongue map theory. Fill the smell pots with lots of different smelling items. i.e. fruit, herbs or perfume. Create two of each scent, give one smell pot to each child and give them 10 minutes to find their partner, the person who smells the same. As a class investigate what adaptations they will need to survive if they relied on scent alone.
