A tough match ahead!

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Addison Road for our United Counties Premier Division match against Bugbrooke St Michaels. We hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us today.

In just our second season in the league, it is still seems really hard for me to predict what type of game we are going to be in for this afternoon. The league seems to be more even so far with anybody being able to beat their opposition on their day. With no disrespect to Wellingborough Town at the weekend, I did feel our last home game was a very even affair with few chances at either end. Yet they currently sit top of the table after an impressive start to the season. Bugbrooke, our opponents this afternoon, have also made a great start to the season and so I think we can expect another tough game for Easington. We are struggling to score goals at the moment and so I hope that we do take our chances this afternoon as I think we will need more than one goal to get anything from the

Elsewhere,game!

we seem to settling back into the rhythm of adult football, the excitement of the FA Cup and Vase have now passed us by and the season is a little less hectic due to holidays. People have commented in recent weeks about the improved playing surface after the rain and I am delighted to share that we have recently placed an order for £30,000 of pitch maintenance equipment. Sports will soon be in charge of a new mini tractor, Trimax cutting deck and a triple turf groomer to help maintain our pitches over the coming seasons. All we need now is a groundsman keen to help us out with pitch preparations and so if you do know of anyone…. Then do please get in contact with the club.

Lastly, we now have little more time to share our thanks to all sponsors who have committed to supporting us this season. Without their help, we could not run the adult section, which now has 7 adult sides, as well as we do. Over the coming weeks we will share our sponsors details with you all via our social media platforms. However, if you take a look around the ground, please do look at the banners and consider whether you might be able to put a bit of business their way!

Please do enjoy the refreshments and the match this afternoon and have a safe journey home.

Best wishes

Good afternoon & welcome back to Addison Road in what will be another tough encounter against a good Bugbrooke side. They have started the season well with some impressive results in recent weeks

For the neutrals watching our game last week against Wellingborough Town it had everything: goals, red cards, lively crowds & a really high intense entertaining game! For me and the coaching staff it was a frustrating afternoon. We didn’t start the game well and were second best throughout the first half. We lost far too many second balls and looked far too exposed which is completely against our philosophy. Second half we were excellent, our shape was much better and we dominated throughout creating good chances. We deservedly got ourselves back into the game through a well taken goal from Smithy. With us well in control of the game we go down to ten men losing Josh Rose through a scuffle in an off the ball incident. The referee has clearly not seen the incident and made a decision based on our opponents reactions. As a group of players we needed to react better in these situations as experience is key. Had we reacted like they did we keep 11 players on the pitch. Like it or not its part of today’s game. With 10 men we continued to dominate the game and drew level through a brilliantly well taken goal from Watkin. For the remainder of the game we never really felt in any danger however we caught out at the end with sloppy goal where again we have switched off at key moments. To leave this game on a positive spin we have pushed a fancied team this season all the way and had them on the back foot for large parts of the second half. I thought our subs made a positive impact which was great to see. We don’t pick our subs to make the numbers up we pick them on what impact can be made during certain situations

As I have mentioned in previous notes we have a great group of lads who will never throw towel in regardless of what’s happening. We spoke as a group in detail after the game sat where we need to be better in certain areas & situations. Our squad is starting to take shape and now has a real good balance of youth & experience. Every player is desperate to be in the starting 11. We will continue to look at strengthening the squad but at the same time will be patient in what we are looking for in a player that makes us better than what we already have. We have also seen Jack Herbert come through the youth ranks who will continue to be involved throughout the 3 men’s teams as he continues to learn & develop. His attitude, desire & patience has been impressive. We have a number of exciting prospects coming through the youth system that as a club we have to create pathways for into the adult teams.

As we approach October it has been a great journey so far with lots learnt. We played our first pre season game in the first week of July and it has been non stop since then! There have been ups & downs as expected however we are in a good place with a great group of lads that are desperate to succeed. There are still plenty of points up for grabs starting from tomorrow. Everyone is beating each other in this league. Please get behind us as normal, the support last week was excellent!

MATCH REPORT

Sports produce another spirited second half display but lose in final stages whilst down to 10 men.

Sports returned to a home Saturday league fixture against a well organised and bright Wellingborough side who came flying out at the start. Wellingborough produced two fantastic early saves from Dolye and took the lead early on when Sports failed to clear and the striker showed composure to finish from close range.

The remained of the half was fairly even without too many clear cut chances.

The visitors extended their lead when again Sports failed to clear and the ball was chipped to the far post for the winger to head home.

Sports rallied and it was Tom Smith who headed home from close range to give The Clan some help. As pressure was building Josh Rose and the Wellingborough full back came together in the box. The Wellingborough player went down and the customary reaction from the visitors of surrounding the ref saw Josh Rose receive a red card for an alleged off the ball incident.

Sports still created chances and a quick convey free kick saw Watkin head home at the far post across the Howeverkeeper.itwas the visitors who would take the three points. Pressure late on was too much as again Sports failed to clear and the ball was forced home in the 86th minute.

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY

The Club was formed in the immediate post war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of whom were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.

The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change after tireless fund raising by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality.

The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. Sports became winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and led the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid fifties. In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi professional teams including Aston Villa ‘A’ and West Bromwich Albion ‘B’

Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted and remained as members until 2021 In 2018/19 Ben Milner and squad won promotion to the Premier League being crowned Champions before two Covid affected seasons. A review of the NLS saw Sports move into the United Counties League South and a new challenge. In our first season in the UCLS, Matt Giles managed the squad to 14th with impressive wins including those against Coventry United and Rugby Town.

In 2021/2022 Andy Sharman managed the Development squad to the UHL Division 2 title and OFA Intermediate Cup Final. With Matt Giles stepping down, Andy Sharman was appointed managed with Tommy Kinch and Mark Boyland assisting. Sharman will once again focus on using local Banbury based talent to compete in the UCL, giving a chance to many from the Development and Clan squads.

In 2022 the club were awarded Level 3 FA Accreditation, with 38 affiliated teams and over 600 players. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female, a pan disability squad and over 50’s football. We also work in partnership with Oxford United in the Community, offering free Women Wellbeing, Premier League Kick and Primary Stars sessions as part of the programme. Relocation remains a priority for the committee and trustees to ensure that our facilities match the growth and needs of the club. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football.

It was a tough one to take conceding so late after coming back from 20 down and going down to ten men. We will be in for another tough game this weekend, Bugbrooke picked up a great result against the previously unbeaten Newport Pagnell last week. After a good midweek session under our belts, we will be looking to build on how we finished Saturday and look to secure 3 points.

Formed in 1929, Bugbrooke St. Michael’s Football Club took over from Bugbrooke United who folded in 1928 after being in existence since 1910.

The club, which is named after the local St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, initially took its place in the Northants Central Village League and had immediate success, winning the league title from 1931 to 1937. The club closed for the Second World War before reforming in 1947 and were once again successful winning the CVL title from 1947 to 1950 and were Northants Lower Junior Cup runners up in 1949, a feat repeated in 1954.

We finally won the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup in 1956 and followed this in 1957 by winning the prestigious Daventry Charity Cup. The club had its most successful years from 1966 to 1972 when we won the Northants Central Combination Premier title and again from 1976 to 1979 with 1977 also seeing us win the N.F.A. Lower Junior Cup

Theagain.club

continued to succeed in the Northants Combination until 1987 when we took the decision to join the United Counties League. At this time, we decided to run two teams in the U.C.L. and two teams in the C.N.C. We also began our youth section and have continued this ever since. Today we run 5 adult sides, including a recently formed Ladies team as well as 13 youth teams. The club has had continued to enjoy success across all age groups over those 30 years, the most notable being N.F.A. Junior Cup winners in 1992, N.F.A Lower Junior Cup in 1993 and U.C.L. Division One winners in 2001.

The reputation for producing successful youth teams has increased over those years and 4 of our youth players (under 16) have been signed by professional league clubs.

The achievements of the club on the field have always been supported by a hard working committee whose chief officers are recorded on a roll in the clubhouse foyer. They along with supporters of the club have built up the excellent changing rooms and clubhouse since 1980.
