CHAIRMAN

Still on the search for more goals!

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Addison Road for our fixture today against Cogenhoe United FC. There are no easy games in this league, but I suspect this one might be of interest to both sides as they search for 3 points as they are evenly matched. We are still on the search for more goals and so maybe today could be the day…

Sports continue to be involved in close encounters and I feel the side is beginning to adjust to the more physical demands of the league. It is also obvious that if you can get ahead in matches, it can often be very hard to come back. This was precisely the case last Saturday where the lads played very well up to the sending off, and then once ahead, managed the game incredibly well to pick up all three points. Newport Pagnell mid week was also a tight affair, but on this occasion, we were a goal behind and then Newport’s defence remained on top!

Lets hope for another entertaining game as this is the last first team at home for virtually a month.

It is great to see another ESFC youngster coming through into the first team. In recent months we have seen Jack Herbert advance into the first team as the first player to play in all year groups at Easington. Olly Rose is the second to manage this which shows that our hard work with the youth section is beginning to come good. I look forward to seeing more youth team players coming through.

I always feel there needs to be more time and patience given to developing youth team players and it is hard to focus on player development when most people look to the match result. Playing adult football is a major step up from youth team football and adapting to the physical difference and the new tactics takes time. I would therefore like to add additional message of thanks to Nick and Jason and Shane and Tim who are managing our Development and Clan sides this season. Without their help, we will struggle to bring players through in a seamless way and so I would encourage you to support the development side when they play at home next week or look out for home fixtures for the Clan at Middle Barton when advertised on social media platforms. All our sides welcome your support.

Please do enjoy the hospitality on offer today, have a safe journey home after the match and hopefully we will see you again soon.

Best wishes

THE

There will be a noticeable absentee from the dugout today as Kinchy prepares himself for the London Marathon, he is raising money for Katharine House Hospice which is very close to his heart. We wish him the best of luck and if you haven’t already, please sponsor him

We made a few changes to the starting 11 last Saturday against Budbrooke to freshen things up and go with more experience. For the first 20 mins we dominated the game and looked positive in our play creating a number of good chances. Their keeper has pulled off a number of brilliant saves to keep them in game. As per normal Budbrooke had their dangers which I felt we dealt with well. With the pressure starting to show on Budbrooke they were losing their discipline however in a moment of madness we have reacted again in an off the ball incident where the ref has seen Snell kick out at their keeper. The ref hasn’t seen the earlier kick out from the keeper which results in only Snell seeing Red. No excuses or complaints, we know our discipline has to better in these situations. I was delighted with our shape & from intent from then onwards where we deservedly took the lead through Coombes. Second half was real test of shape, discipline & game management, limiting them to few chances I was delighted for the boys in what was a deserved 3 points.

It then doesn’t really get anymore difficult with a game Tuesday night against FA Vase holders & top of the league Newport Pagnell. As expected they were a very organised & experienced side with players on big money. We again started the game really strongly and were on the front foot for the opening 20 mins, yet again we were denied by some great saves by their keeper. Against the run of play we lost possession in their area & got caught by a counter attack which to be fair was a well taken goal in which Doyle was so close to saving! On the stroke of half time Jack Fountain gets clattered in the area in what was a stone wall penalty, he made intelligent runs all night and got in front of the defender who kicked his ankle trying to clear the ball. The referee gives a freekick the other way. We have been desperately unlucky so far this season in key moments. Second half we pushed Pagnell very deep hunting for the equaliser which limited them to a few chances on the break. Our shape and discipline again was excellent, we just couldn’t capitalise in the final third. The boys were disappointed at the end as we deserved something from the game but play like this we are in for good season.

We now move on to today, confidence is the squad is growing, we look back to where we were at the start of the season which is a great sign. We have strong competition all over the park with J Rose, Beany & Kinchy all to return.

With some departures this week, suspensions & injuries I’m delighted to welcome Charlie Kille to the club who is a left footed defender/winger who joins on loan from Daventry Town. Charlie will add strength & depth to squad & create further competition for places which is crucial if we are to progress.

Finally after good week, the squad is buzzing and desperate to earn another 3 points today. As normal, let’s hear your voices & get behind us

Good afternoon & welcome back to Addison Road as we continue our run of tough games Vs Cogenhoe United. Similar to ourselves their games have been very tight so far this season and decided by the odd goal.

MATCH REPORT

Sports lose on the road but denied penalty.

Sports travelled to Newport Pagnell Town FC and were looking for a better performance on the road. Josh Rose was still missing due to suspension but confidence was high following Saturdays home win.

However, it was Newport who started brightly and created some early chances. It was Newport who took the lead as the striker beat the offside trap to finish. Sports again needed Doyle to make some important saves as he continued his good form.

Sports made four attacking substitutions and were denied what they felt was an obvious penalty. This was compounded by the Newport defender who then admitted to the bench he caught him and got away with one.

Sharman was pleased with the competitive performance although chances were at a premium.

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY

The Club was formed in the immediate post war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of whom were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.

The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change after tireless fund raising by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality.

The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. Sports became winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and led the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid fifties. In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi professional teams including Aston Villa ‘A’ and West Bromwich Albion ‘B’

Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted and remained as members until 2021 In 2018/19 Ben Milner and squad won promotion to the Premier League being crowned Champions before two Covid affected seasons. A review of the NLS saw Sports move into the United Counties League South and a new challenge. In our first season in the UCLS, Matt Giles managed the squad to 14th with impressive wins including those against Coventry United and Rugby Town.

In 2021/2022 Andy Sharman managed the Development squad to the UHL Division 2 title and OFA Intermediate Cup Final. With Matt Giles stepping down, Andy Sharman was appointed managed with Tommy Kinch and Mark Boyland assisting. Sharman will once again focus on using local Banbury based talent to compete in the UCL, giving a chance to many from the Development and Clan squads.

In 2022 the club were awarded Level 3 FA Accreditation, with 38 affiliated teams and over 600 players. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female, a pan disability squad and over 50’s football. We also work in partnership with Oxford United in the Community, offering free Women Wellbeing, Premier League Kick and Primary Stars sessions as part of the programme. Relocation remains a priority for the committee and trustees to ensure that our facilities match the growth and needs of the club. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football.

Last Saturday's game was another interesting one, going down to ten men after 25 minutes was not the start we wanted! We showed great character and responded excellently and managed to pick up a well-deserved 3 points against a good side.

Moving onto Tuesday's game against a strong Newport team, it was a close fought game and one of very few 'real' chances. We performed well and i feel a draw would have been a fair result but it wasn't to be.

Another tough game this weekend against a good Cogenhoe side, we will look to build on the last two performances and pick up 3 cherries !

At Easington Sports FC our Wildcats centres have now been running for over 5 years. In that time, we have seen the integration of over 100 new girls players across six affiliated girls teams within the Oxfordshire Girls Football League.

The sessions are ran by ESFC Ladies players Tammy Starr and Emily Alcock, supported by volunteers from our Under 16 girls squads. The sessions are fun based football games for girls new to football with a view to providing them a pathway into an affiliated team.

We are hugely proud of our girls section and the progress this has made.

New for 2022 / 2023 we are delighted to announce our partnership with EMD Inpsire. EMD Inspire will support our Wildcats sessions as we look to welcome more new girls to football and #TheClan.

The club shield was derived from the Coat of Arms of the de Cogenhoe family who were the village squires from 100 AD. The original colours were red and silver cross pieces and diamonds, however we have adopted blue and gold as our colours.

The early days of Cogenhoe were not documented and are now obscured by the mist of time. Inter village friendlies gradually led to membership of the now extinct Central Village League. As typical with village football, a variety of pitches were ‘home’ until in 1950 the first game, against Northampton Yeomanry, was played on the then new playing field. After some modest success, United ceased to exist sometime after 1958, to be reformed as the current club for the 1967/68 football season, competing in the Central Northants Football Combination. By 1978 the club had progressed from the Second Division into the Premier Division. In a six year period thirteen winners’ and six runners up trophies were won. Development of facilities became paramount to enable promotion into the United Counties Football League. We secured the lease on 3.6 acres of agricultural land from the Marquis of Northampton, Compton Park was now on the map, new purpose built facilities were developed together with a spectator stand which gained us promotion into the UCFL for the season 1985/86. The first competitive match was the final match in the Central Combination, when we defeated Bugbrooke St.Michaels 1 0 with Jason Moore scoring the first goal on this ground.

On 17th August 1985 Cogenhoe United played their first UCFL game losing at home to Mirlees Blackstone. Cogenhoe were forced to apply for re election and Dave Conlon took over the helm in the summer of 1986. Compton Park was officially opened when Ron Atkinson, then manager of Manchester United brought a team to play in the inaugural game. Cogenhoe gained promotion to the Premier Division at the end of Dave Conlon’s first season finishing runners up to Baker Perkins. Stephen Brockwell who succeeded ex Liverpool and England full, back, Phil Neal as President, ensured facilities were met and promotion was gained.

A youth policy was adopted beginning a trend of supplying quality players to the senior teams, with Darren Harmon and Darren Bazeley progressing into the professional game. Matthew Murphy also made this progression via Corby Town. The club entered the F.A. Vase for the first time in Season 1988/89, at the end of this season Brian Foley stepped down as Chairman after 21 years loyal service, this achievement was recognised by being elected a Vice President of the United Counties Football League. Derek Wright took over as Chairman and immediately set up a major fund raising campaign to ensure floodlighting was erected in 1992 and ensured senior status was maintained. This was achieved to mark the club’s Silver Jubilee in that year. An under 18’s youth side was elected to the Northamptonshire Senior Youth League in Season 1991/92 and won the Championship at the first attempt. Further land was obtained and further youth pitches were developed. We entered the F.A. Cup for the first time in 1994/95.

After an extremely successful 13 years at the helm Dave Conlon retired as manager prior to the commencement of the 1997/98 season and Steve Forbes took over the reigns with Dino Cirrelli assisting.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

In the subsequent three seasons Steve and Dino guided the team to further success culminating the most successful campaign in the history of the club. Runners up in the UCFL Premier Division, winners of the UCFL Knock Out Cup and Buckingham Charity Cup and runners up in the Daventry Charity Cup. In the Northants Senior Youth League our under 18’s were not to be outdone by winning the League Knockout Cup and finishing Runners up in the League.

After a 3 year spell in charge Steve Forbes stepped down and former cobblers & Rushden and Diamonds midfielder Aidy Mann took over team affairs. Aidys first season incharge saw the team finish a credible third. Following the loss of many of the squad to local rivals Newport Pagnell, the Cooks ended the 2002/03 season mid table.

As a result Former Northampton Town midfielder Adam Sandy was appointed asfirst team coach with former Cooks stalwort Dino Cirelli as his assistant. They finished the 2003/04 season in sixth place and runners up in the Daventry Charity Cup, Dino Cirelli retired due to other work commitments.

In the the following season 2004/05 Dave Jones stepped up from reserve team coach to assist Adam Sandy at the reins The end of the season finished with Cogenhoe playing Potton (1st vs 2nd) A winner takes all game, with cogenhoe only requiring a draw to clinch there first ucl title. The game ended 2 2 giving the ucl championship to Cogenhoe. During the 2005/06 season Cogenhoe acheived their best ever run in the FA Cup eventually loosing in extra time in a replay to Chasetown 4-3. Chase Town went on to play Oldham in the first round proper.

In the 2006/07 Season the “Cooks” equaled their best ever run in the FA vase going out to Causeway United after extra time in the fourth round. At the end of the season Cogenhoe United announce the appointment of Darren Collins as 1st Team Manager, following the resignation of Adam Sandy. There were strong bids made by four other applicants, but Darren’s pedigree stood out, with 2 decades of experience as a player in the football league and higher reaches of non league football, including 2 seasons at Cogenhoe in our championship winning side during which time he scored 50 goals.
