EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

THE CHAIRMAN Good evening all, Welcome to Addison Road for another home fixture in the United Counties Premier Division. Tonight we would like to offer a special welcome to all supporters, players and committee from Coventry United FC. Sports are certainly going to be in for another test of character this evening after a tough set of fixtures to start the season. Looking ahead to the game this evening, I hope we can give a good account of ourselves against another side that I am sure will be in contention for promotion at the end of the season. The performance on Saturday was a poor one and it is the first time this season, where I thought we lacked the energy and penetration to get something from the game. I hope we can return to our high energy levels this evening. With the exception of our away day at Lutterworth two weekends ago, the games have been close. Unfortunately, we are a very young side at the moment and we lack experience to manage key moments in the game and to make the right decision. It is great to see the adult section sticking with our aims to promote local talent and youth but you know you have an injury crisis when we need to draw on the experience of Ben Milner (who is 42) to offer a different type of threat in the game at the weekend. It is definitely not a time to panic… however, we need to stop picking up injuries and need to start picking up some results! We end this week with an FA Vase match against London Colney, another fixture at Addison Road. We hope you enjoy the game this evening and that our local supporters return on Saturday to give our lads some much needed support. Please leave as quietly as you can and drive safely on your exit from the car parks. Best wishes Richard Meadows Chairman

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Good evening and welcome to Addison Road, After growing into the game last Tuesday against a good Newport Pagnell side, we failed to show any consistency against Cogenhoe on Saturday. Although we limited their goal scoring chances for most of the game, those efforts were wasted by conceding a free kick in a dangerous area and failing to deal with the consequent ball into our box. Added to this disappointment, we failed to put any real pressure on their backline despite them showing some frailties that we should have capitalised on. Despite still missing some important players who influence our attacking play, the players available are capable of producing much better than they did. Although we are still missing some key attacking players this evening, injured players are beginning to filter back in which is a promising sign. While we expect them to hit the ground running, some match fitness and group cohesion will be our priority over the next couple of weeks which should see gradual improvement in our performances and results. If we can manage the transition period from now until then by picking up some much needed points and a good result next week in the FA Vase, we will have a good base from which to kick start our season. Some of our younger and more inexperienced players have shown some good signs but ultimately, they have struggled without having regular older and more experienced heads around them. I have already watched Coventry United a number of times this season and I am well aware of the threats they can cause us. Our still depleted squad will need to be on top of their game this evening. This will be a real test of character. Good luck to Coventry United for the rest of the season. Best Regards

Matt Giles Manager

MATCH REPORT Easington Sports FC 0 v 1 Cogenhoe United FC Visitors snatch win in game of few chances Sports continue tough start to the season and lose late on. In truth this game was a poor game to watch with limited chances for either team in the first half. Whilst Cogenhoe had some early possession neither team rarely threatened Sports injury woes continued as Cox was substituted at half time as a concussion precaution after colliding with Doyle. Shortly afterwards Taylor was also substituted with a knee injury which saw Milner make a return to the squad. With 8 strikers injured or unavailable across the club Milner played the last 35 mins. Watts also limped off with a recurring ankle injury. Milners leadership and presence lifted Sports and they started to build pressure, especially from set pieces. The game then changed with five minutes to go Tom Smith challenged and came away with the ball. The referee deemed unfairly, which seemed harsh. From the resulting free kick, Watson got across the near post and looped a header over Doyle. Cogenhoe United saw out the remainder of the game without too much threat from Sports in a difficult afternoon.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 35 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female and a pan disability squad. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.
