EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

THE CHAIRMAN Good afternoon Here we are… the final game of what has been a really tough season! I am delighted to be welcoming you all to Addison Road for the last time this season and it is great to finish with a home game. I would like to wish all those from Godmanchester Rovers a special welcome on your first visit to Easington Sports. I am pretty certain this will be the furthest our visitors will need to travel in the league this season and so I hope we make you feel very welcome. I have always been a glass half full person and so I am quite happy to ignore the table as things stand and would prefer to reflect on so many positives this season. For starters, we have managed to finish a full season on time for the first time in 3 years. We have managed to stick with our club philosophy and aims and have continued to use local young talent despite the physicality of the league and we have found a number of real gems that should go onto to have very successful non league careers. We have also had some notable performances in the FA Cup and results against Cinderford AFC at the beginning of the season, a double over Coventry United and a much-needed win against Rugby Town FC on Easter Monday were all highlights for me. I am sure they were for our keenest followers too. That said, like others around the club, I cannot hide the disappointment of our final run of matches leading up to the end of the season. To lose 7 on the bounce was hard for the players and management to take; however, it should be a great learning curve for the younger players and I am sure they will be better for it next season. Lastly, today is the final game for our manager Matt Giles. Matt has worked tirelessly in a such a professional manner over the last 3 years. With his management team, they have integrated younger players into an ageing squad over the course of the last two seasons and have been dedicated to getting the best results on the pitch. We have been grateful to Matt for letting the club know his intentions for next season which have allowed us to begin our search for a new management team before the season has ended. We wish Matt all the very best for the future and hope he enjoys the rest before returning to management somewhere over the next few years. Right onto this afternoon! Wouldn’t it be great to see Sports end the season with a bang and turn in a great performance for our loyal supporters! Fingers crossed! I hope you enjoy the game this afternoon and for those from Godmanchester, please have a safe journey home.

Best wishes Richard Meadows Chairman

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road, It has been great to finish a full season after the lockdowns we have experienced over the last couple of years. Having been promoted to the Hellenic Premier League we excelled and were on track to achieve well above the club's expectations in both previous seasons. This year however has been a more humbling one. Having moved across into the UCL, we have still achieved the club's objectives but our lack of consistency in performance and availability has been punished in a much more competitive league. I was delighted with our win at home to Rugby Town on Monday afternoon. The performance and result against one of the league's top teams epitomised what my best teams at Easington have been about during my time in charge. We showed Rugby the respect they deserved in the way we set up but not too much respect that we didn't think we could get something from the game. The players showed incredible work rate and their decision making in all areas of the pitch was excellent throughout the game. We defended patiently and suffocated Rugby's main threats which limited their chances and saw them get frustrated. When the opportunities arose, we hit them on the counter attack and provided a significant threat in doing so. I thought it was a top performance against a top team and we fully deserved the long overdue three points. As we move into today, it is our final chance of the season to show some consistency, something we have not always been good at as I mentioned above. Godmanchester are in the group of teams similar to us in the league, but since Christmas they have shown a good level of consistency and find themselves with a chance of finishing in the top half of the table going into the last game of the season. We enjoyed a battling game in horrible conditions away to them earlier in the season where a 2-2 draw was probably a fair result. With their form in the second half of the season compared to ours, this should be another really tough game for us but I am hopeful that last Monday's performance and result coupled with our final training session of the season will have prepared us well and we can finish the season on a high. To finish, I would like to thank everyone for their support over the last three seasons. I have thoroughly enjoyed managing at this football club and I am very grateful for the opportunity. I hope there are things my staff and I have implemented behind the scenes that the club will continue to adopt moving forward and can use our work as a base to make continued progress. We are now an established step 5 football club and over my time, we have given many local young players their first taste of this level of football. I look forward to being a supporter of the football club moving forward and watching the progress continue.

MATCH REPORT Easington Sports FC 2 v 1 Rugby Town FC Sports pick up three vital points Youthful side produce excellent display in second half comeback Sports hosted third placed Rugby Town FC looking for their first win since January. There were five changes to the starting lineup against Rothwell Corinthian FC two days earlier. Sports continued to give youth a chance with teenagers Dale Freeman, Tom Haynes, Alfie Dunn, Luke Swann and Adam Taylor all starting. Sports recalled veteran striker Andrew Stidder and Tom Smith returned to the team from his spell at FC Stratford. In an even first half Sports seemed to surprise their visitors, who despite the large away following, took time to dominate the game as they had done in the reverse fixture. It took the only real moment of quality in the first half to see the opening goal. The ball was switched over the right hand side, and as the winger approached goal he pulled the ball back. The initial shot was brilliant saved by Dale Freeman only for the ball to find the Rugby Town FC Number 8 who volleyed home. The visitors led 1-0 at half time but Sports would have been pleased with their energy. In the second half Sports ceased the initiative almost to the surprise of the Rugby Town side. They were gifted the equaliser when the goalkeeper passed the ball straight to the impressive Alfie Dunn. He took his time, faked to shoot causing the keeper to go to ground and then calmly passed the ball into an empty net. It was Sports who then had the momentum. Again it was a switch out to the right which found Luke Swann who despite having the full back nearby he shot across the keeper to find the bottom corner. Rugby pressed towards the end by Freeman remained calm under a direct approach and Sports secured a much needed victory. Some excellent performances from The Clan but special mentions must go to keeper Dale Freeman in only his third start for The Clan, left back Tom Haynes who continues to impress and the veteran Stidder who produced a masterclass in centre forward play.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Oxford United in the Community. The relationship allows us to provide football to all of the local community through football programmes, female well-being sessions and Premier League Kicks sessions. The bespoke hub model has been a huge success and one which we are looking to develop over the coming years. In 2022 the club were awarded FA Level 3 Accreditation. We currently have 38 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female, a pan disability squad and over 50’s football. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS FC Club History

2021 – 2022 SEASON Situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse, 16 miles North West of Cambridge, on the A14. Godmanchester is a town, not a village as it was chartered in 1212 and again in 1604. Godmanchester has been inhabited for over 2000 years and was a very important Roman settlement. Football has been played in Godmanchester since the late 1890’s Godmanchester Rovers came into existence in 1911, previously playing as Godmanchester Town. The first recorded mention of the club is from the ‘Cambridge Independent Press’ newspaper dated Friday 26th December 1913 where Godmanchester Rovers had a fixture against St-Ives on Boxing Day. During the 1928–29 season, when they won the Hunts Junior Cup. They played in the Huntingdonshire League for many years before joining the Cambridgeshire League. They won the Hunts Junior Cup again in 1988–89, and in 1992 were promoted to the top division of the Cambridgeshire League. In 1994–95 they won the League Cup, retaining it for the next two seasons. However, they were relegated to the Senior Division in 2000. With the club about to move into a new ground, they made a speculative application to join the Eastern Counties League in 2002. Despite being in the second tier of the Cambridgeshire League, the club were successful. They finished bottom of the division in 2004–05, but were not relegated as the league was under strength in terms of numbers. In 2011–12 the club won the Eastern Counties Division One on goal difference to earn promotion to the Premier Division, also winning the Division One Knock-out Cup, defeating Whitton United 1–0 in the final. In the 2014-15 season the club finished as runners-up in the Premier Division also adding the Hunts Senior Cup to an all-round successful record for the season. At the end of season, Nev Nania, retired from his role as First Team manager and took the position of Football Consultant within the club. The 2015-16 saw the appointment of Matt Clements as First Team Manager, with Matty Haniver keeping his role as First Team Player Coach. The season ended as the previous season with a second place finish, unbeaten in the last 17 League games. Before the start of the 2016-17 season Rovers saw the resignation of Matt Clements and the appointment of Adrian Cambridge as First Team coach. At the same time, much of the established first team players moved to different clubs, leaving Aidy Cambridge with the job of rebuilding the first team. Shortly into the new season Matty Haniver, 1st team Player Coach, departed, with his role filled by John Bitting. After 19 games in charge, Manager Aidy Cambridge and Assistant John Bitting stood down from their roles at the club. The clubs football consultant, Nev Nania took temporary charge for the next home match. Former Godmanchester Rovers player, Chris Hyem was appointed First Team manager after being released from Histon FC. Hyem started his tenure with five straight wins, rapidly moving the team up the league and well away from the relegation zone. After a brief run of loses and draws over the Christmas and New Year period, Rovers found their stride again and finished in 12th place. After securing Premiership football for the 2017-2018 season Chris Hyem stood down as manager, electing for a player-assistant role. Ollie Drake was appointed first team manager, fresh from winning the Kershaw League, Premier Division title with Hardwick. Drake will be joined at Rovers by his father Steve.

The 2017-2018 Season was marred with high number of postponed games creating a large backlog of matches to be played, due to severe weather, notably ‘The Beast From The East’ and heavy rain. Ollie Drakes aim for the 2017-2018 was to build on the progress made by Chris Hyem during 2016-2017 season and secure a mid-table position. The first few months, in Ollie’s own words ‘A little lack luster’ starting with a run of draws and losses both at home and away. Results started to improve with the return of a number of players that departed at the end of the 2016-2017 season with a run of 7 winning games putting Rovers in 10th position at the start of October. The next 6 weeks then proved to be a difficult period, losing three premiership games, and knocked out of the Hunts Senior Cup and FA Vase. Fortune then returned and from Mid-November through to the end of the season, Rovers won 24, drew 1 and lost 6 of their remaining 31 matches landing Roves a 4th place finish in the seasons 24 team league. This also included a run of 9 games undefeated. During the season break work was undertaken to add addition drainage to the pitch to elevate potential postponed matches. At the beginning of the season Chris Hyem has stepped down from his assistant manager role to focus on his player role at the club. A majority of the 2017-2018 squad have signed on for a further year with further new signings to further bolster the squad for a promotion push. The 2018-2019 season saw the retention of the majority of the squad from the previous season. Despite a strong winning run of pre-season matches and a win in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary round, Rovers lost their opening League match but bounced back with a FA Cup win in the next game. This was the start of pattern that Godmanchester had throughout the season, strong performances in Cup Games but mixed in League games, unlike the previous season there was no clear winning form in the league that resulted on a number of draws that they should have won. Ultimately these draws proved decisive in the final table with Godmanchester finishing third on 73 points, 22 points behind league winners Histon. In Cup competitions, Godmanchester progressed to the FA Cup First Round Qualify, losing away to Histon. With the FA Cup exit, Godmanchester focused on the FA Vase, winning games against West Essex, Great Yarmouth and Holbeach United to reach the 4th Round and a home tie against Sporting Khalsa. Godmanchester won the game and a faced a 5th round tie away against Scholing FC. Unfortunately, Godmanchester were found to have fielded an illegible player against Sporting Khalsa and thus were disqualified. Despite this disappointment the Club went on to win The Hunts Senior Cup for the 2nd time, The Hinchingbrooke Cup and the Mayors Cup. As we all know the 2019-2020 ended abruptly, this however allowed the club extended time to work on and allow the pitch to have a long recovery from a very wet season that resulted in a high number of cancelled matches due to water logged pitches. Hopefully the work has paid off and the main pitch is a little more resilient to heavy rainfall. As with the 2019-2020 season and Covid-19, 2020 -21 started with no spectators and just 9 games played before the season was ended and nulled. The club took the opportunity whilst the ground was void of any sport and spectators to embark on several ground improvements and renovations. The biggest undertaking was a large expansion on the Club House, adding a new larger kitchen for match day refreshments and larger patio area. Before the start of the 2021-22, First Team manager, Ollie Drake departed the club making way for Dean Greygoose to take charge with a fresh squad of players, whilst retaining a few members from the previous season.
