THE CHAIRMAN Good afternoon everybody and Happy New Year! It has been a while since we have hosted a fixture at Addison Road and so we are pleased to get the game on this afternoon against Long Buckby AFC. However, it has been that wet over the festive period, I think we would have struggled to get matches on as the pitch has been waterlogged several times since our last game on December 12 th. I have no doubt the pitch will be very heavy under foot today and so it is going to be hard to play and will test the players’ fitness! We last played Long Buckby at the beginning of October and that was another game played in very difficult conditions. We edged a 4-5 thriller on a Tuesday evening between two evenly matched teams played out in torrential rain and so I do expect a close game again today. Our opponents have been on a great run of results leading into this fixture and so it is going to be a tough game to call. We were not out-played in our recent game against Rugby Town but the key moments of the match did not go our way. I am sure our players will be keen to put on a better performance today. Looking back on the season so far, we have now reached the halfway point and we can be pleased with the way things have gone. We had a good run in the FA Cup which was an exciting start to the season especially as we welcomed back spectators. It has been the first time we have played the majority of the sides in the league and so we will have learnt a lot from the first part of the season. The top 5 sides have much stronger squads than ours, but I feel we have competed with all teams this year despite the scorelines in the odd game. It has also been nice to visit new grounds and to meet new committee members after many years in the Hellenic League. I really hope we can have an improved second half of the season enabling us to climb a few places up the table. The committee will also work hard off the pitch to enhance our own facilities to improve the match day experience for spectators. There is lots to look forward to in 2022 and so I hope we have an entertaining game this afternoon to kick things off. With best wishes

Best wishes Richard Meadows Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road, Despite what will now be considered as a poor run of form, we have played well in a number of games recently. What cannot be denied though is that we have failed to create enough chances in our last two games. This is something that needs to be addressed. This been said, in our most recent fixture away to Rugby Town, we were well beaten by an experienced team who punished us at key moments in the game. We had done well to limit them clear goal scoring opportunities but they were able to break us down with a minute to go until half time. We then looked to be growing into the game in the second half in possession until they showed good creativity to score the second with about 30 minutes to go. At this point we attempted to be more adventurous and in the 90th minute they caught us out of position and scored a goal of high quality. We managed to get a good training session in on New Year's Eve to work on some of things we feel will make a difference to us moving forward. We are carrying a couple of knocks but our squad is close to being as healthy as it has been all season which is great news moving into the New Year. We picked up 3 points against Long Buckby in October in a 9 goal thriller. Since then Long Buckby have shown some really good form. They sit 5th in the recent form table although they have now gone two games without a win so they will be looking to get back on track and continue their positive form. Good luck to Long Buckby for the rest of the season.

MATCH REPORT Rugby Town FC 3 v 0 Easington Sports FC Sports lose convincingly against experience Rugby side. Goals conceded and bad times despite determined first half performance. Sports lost on the road to impressive Rugby in their festive fixture in front of an impressive crown of 295. Playing up hill and into the wind Sports once again were brave and continued to play out from the back. It was Sports who started the brightest with two good deliveries from corners from Harry Brock causing the hosts some concerns. However it was Rugby who then dominated play and used conditions to their advantage. Joe White made some impressive saves as it looked like it was a job well done in the first half. However, in the last minute an impressive move was finished by the experience Rugby midfielder to ensure they had the lead at the break. In the second half Sports felt that they should have had an early penalty. An initial challenge on Swann was waved away but seconds later Sherpa Moore beat his man only for his claim to be turned down. Minutes later a great cross by the Rugby right winger was headed home over Joe White and underneath the bar. In truth the game was over as Rugbys experience told and they dictated play. Levi Steele worked tirelessly up front and had a couple of half chances but Sports struggled to create further chances for him. Alfie Dunn showed good energy with the ball and took the game to Rugby. He also had a half shout for a penalty turned down. It was Rugby who scored a third at the end with a great cross field ball somehow lob volleyed in spectacular fashion to seal the win. A tough day for Sports but plenty learnt against a good side.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 35 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female and a pan disability squad. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Formally known as Long Buckby Nomads, the current club was re-formed after the war in 1945 due to the efforts of local hairdresser Bill Ward and others. There followed many successful seasons in the Rugby and District League and the Northants Football Combination. Notable players during the fifties and sixties were Jack Osbourne, Pete Dexter, Dave Rainsford, Ray Worthington, Derrick Worthington, Cyril Worthington, Bill Dicks, Ray Timbs, Aubrey (flapper) Wilkes, Cracker Wilson, Roy Muscott, Bill Tolley and many others. The club was ably led at the time by the likes of Alistair Bruce, John Partridge and Jack Osbourne. It was also supported by probably the best supporters club at our level in the county, led by Doreen Timbs, Joyce Worthington and Barbara Dicks, laying the sound financial foundation for the club to progress in later years. With numerous ground improvements on the Sports Field and the beginnings of a fledgling Sports and Social Club, the bucks gathered a strong enough squad during the 1968/69 seasons to apply and be accepted into the United Counties Football League in 1969. Manager at the time was Alan Rose who would lead the club to more honours in future years. Soon after entering the UCL he brought in Pete Smith to replace himself as manager. Under Pete Smith the club won Division 3 in 1969-70 and then won Division 2 in 1970-71 but were refused promotion due to the facilities. But they won again in 1971-72 and this time were promoted, not into Division 1 but into the newly renamed Premier Division. Club President at the time was local business man George Taylor of Taylor and KW Coaches. Club Secretary was Jock Morton and during that time the club extended their Sports and Social Club by building a large concert room which was opened by the President’s wife Marie Taylor. During their promotion season to the Premier Division the club also won the UCL Division 2 KO Cup, the Northants Junior Cup and the Daventry Charity Cup. Following Pete Smith was former player Dave Conlon and then Alan Rose again followed by former Northampton Town player Roly Mills. Alan then became manager of the Junior Teams, building a side which won many competitions including the Umbro Cup. ( a cup sponsored by Umbro which included teams for all over the country ay U16’s level ) Some of their games were played at Nottingham Forest where one of his players Gary Mills went on to win a European Cup Medal. Others were Mick Kurilla who went onto Birmingham City and Vince Overson who also Captained Birmingham City and Daryl White who went to Southampton. After Roly Mills, Chris Beckett took over assisted by Mick Worthington and in the 19834 season the club were runners up to Kettering Town in the Northants Senior Cup. The following season the Bucks were runners up in the League by one point to Arlesey Town but won the UCL KO Cup beating Baldock Town 7-3 on aggregate. When Chris left Glenn Burdett was manager for two years. Glenn was followed by our longest serving manager Mike Emms. In his nine years the Bucks only finished in the bottom half of the table once. During this time the club moved to a new pitch after the Sportsfield obtained more land financed by the club and the Rugby Club as well as help from the school and the District Council. Also under Mike Emms leadership a new 200 seat stand was built as well as the playing area fenced and the floodlights refurbished and moved. After Mike Emms left, the Bucks struggled at times to be a force in the UCL Prem and narrowly avoided relegation on several occasions. But managers since Emms, Ashley Alexander, Steve Renshaw, Kev Simmonds, Geoff Green and Aidy Mann kept the club at its present status and claimed some notable victories. In January 2007 with a new Chairman Guy Loveland on board, Glenn Botterill was appointed manager who brought in former Rushden and Diamonds player Andy Peaks as his number 2. New players were brought in and the Bucks again finished runners up in the UCL Premier Division in 2007-08.

Botterill left in January 2009 and was replaced by former Northampton Town player Adam Sandy who was assisted by Matt Murphy. The Bucks then won the Northants Senior Cup beating Brackley Town 2-0. They then beat Northampton Town 3-2 in the NFA Premier Maunsell Cup in July 2009. Glenn Botterill returned as manager in January 2010 this time assisted by senior player Matt Green, finishing third in the league and reaching the last sixteen of the FA Vase. In 2010-11 another last sixteen in the FA Vase was achieved and also a fourth place finish in the league. Season 2011-12 saw the bucks reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup losing to Kidsgrove Athletic and then beating the well supported King’s Lynn Town twice to finally win the UCL Premier Division Title. The club also won the Baker Perkins FC UCL highest aggregate of goals trophy and Glenn Botterill won the UCL Manager of the season. After winning the league the Chairman and Management team left the club. The next two seasons saw Scott Goodwin and then Phil Mason keep us in the Premier League. Phil Mason then left and his assistant Dan Stewart was appointed first team manager. Unfortunately he was unable to maintain our Premier League Status and was replaced as Manager by Richard Kay. Richard was replaced by Darren Foster in November 2017. Due to work commitments Darren was unable to continue and Dan Carter was appointed manager in July 2018. After two unfinished but successful seasons, promotion to the Premier Division was achieved. Dan left in April 2021 and former coach Dan Gibson has become Manager assisted by Dan Elliott.
