THE CHAIRMAN

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Addison Road. I would like to extend an extra warm welcome to our visitors, March Town United, as this is the first time the two sides have played against each other after their transfer into the United Counties League.

I am sure like me, your interest in The World Cup is starting to grow… With no build up to the first games and matches being played without the smell of summer BBQs… it has taken a while for it to feel like a World Cup! You therefore get two for the price of one today, with World Cup matches on in the clubhouse throughout the afternoon as well as our United Counties fixture outside. If you are reading this programme in advance, then please do come down to Addison Road for a great afternoon and evening of football.

With regards to the game today, I am sure it is going to be another really tough game. Milton Keynes Irish, March Town and Histon have already proved to be good additions to the league and the table shows our opposition today can be a match for anybody. Sports by their own admission, have been below par in recent weeks and I know all involved today will be working hard for more consistency. Fingers crossed for a bright start to the game…

I hope you have a great afternoon with us today and have a safe journey home.

Best wishes

Best

Since my last notes we have played 2 games with the first at home to our close neighbours Cropredy

League. As expected Cropredy came for the win and came out fighting in what was a very intense first half. I was pleased on how the boys manged the opening stages, we matched their work rate and were very patient in our play, Cropredy had a couple of good chances in which one they probably should have taken. At the other end we also created a number of chances taking 2 them, one before half time which effectively killed the game off. In the second half we were dominant in possession as Cropredy tired which opened the game up. The third goal was a rocket from the ever improving Oli Rose following a really good move. The fourth goal from Swanny was just as impressive with great build up play which started from our 16 year debutant GK Bobby Whitton. It was great moment to be able to give another youth player a chance of first team football, Bobby is another really exciting prospect who has a great future ahead of him. We now go into the hat for the quarter finals where all the big boys join, so we will be hoping for a home tie under the lights!

Saturday was really a disappointing afternoon suffering a 3 0 defeat at Desborough Town. We were well aware it would be a tough afternoon against a physical team on a bad surface however we set up the team to go and compete. In the first half we competed well and controlled the game creating some good chances. We went in at the break very confident we would get something out of the game. We conceded within the first few minutes of the second half and then fell apart conceding another 2 poor goals within 10 mins. We completely lost our shape, got overran and were very much second best. We had a couple of key players missing however we need to better against teams like this. We learn & move on quickly.

On a positive note, we are delighted to get the signature of ex Brackley Town Saints midfielder Kyle Wynne who has just recovered from a bad knee injury playing in America. He will add quality & strength to our midfield. Saturday will come to soon for Kyle whilst we get him up to speed but expect to see him very soon! We are also looking at another lad over the next couple of weeks in training who we are interested in signing. On the injury front we hope to have our skipper Badge back today & Jack Fountain is 2/3 weeks away which is better news.

We now turn our attentions to March Town, the boys are desperate to put last Saturday behind them and get back to winning ways, please get behind us!

Get behind us as normal & enjoy the game!

Welcome back to Addison Road for the start of a really exciting weekend of football, within the squad all eyes were on Tuesday night hoping England secured a win to ensure the knockout game was on Sunday & not Saturday! This has saved all the talk of potential kick off changes to earlier or later times! We can now fully focus on March Town in what will be another very tough game against a top team in this league. from the Oxon Senior

MATCH REPORT

Sports lose again away from home.

Sports travelled away to Desborough intent on improving on last years performance at the same venue however it was the same again.

Sports gave a debut in goal to 16 year old Bobby Whitton with Doyle unavailable. Watkin was also missing and Sharman opted for a 3-4-3 formation.

The first half was fairly even with neither side dominating the game on a poor pitch in windy conditions. Whitton made an important early save after a mistake saw the ball fall to No 9. Howards was put through soon after clean through on goal only for a very tight offside to be given.

In the second half Sports were undone in a poor 15 minute spell.

Desborough took the lead when a cross from the left hand side found the right back who headed home. Sports looked rattled and it was a straight ball through the middle which saw Desborough extend the lead. Minutes later it was 3 0 in almost identical fashion.

Sports offered very little in the second half as the hosts secured a comfortable victory.

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY

The Club was formed in the immediate post war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of whom were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.

The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change after tireless fund raising by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality.

The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. Sports became winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and led the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid fifties. In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi professional teams including Aston Villa ‘A’ and West Bromwich Albion ‘B’

Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted and remained as members until 2021 In 2018/19 Ben Milner and squad won promotion to the Premier League being crowned Champions before two Covid affected seasons. A review of the NLS saw Sports move into the United Counties League South and a new challenge. In our first season in the UCLS, Matt Giles managed the squad to 14th with impressive wins including those against Coventry United and Rugby Town.

In 2021/2022 Andy Sharman managed the Development squad to the UHL Division 2 title and OFA Intermediate Cup Final. With Matt Giles stepping down, Andy Sharman was appointed managed with Tommy Kinch and Mark Boyland assisting. Sharman will once again focus on using local Banbury based talent to compete in the UCL, giving a chance to many from the Development and Clan squads.

In 2022 the club were awarded Level 3 FA Accreditation, with 38 affiliated teams and over 600 players. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female, a pan disability squad and over 50’s football. We also work in partnership with Oxford United in the Community, offering free Women Wellbeing, Premier League Kick and Primary Stars sessions as part of the programme. Relocation remains a priority for the committee and trustees to ensure that our facilities match the growth and needs of the club. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football.

After a couple of disappointing league games we are looking to get a much needed win today. The boys looked fired up after a good session midweek and will look to take this into the game.

On a positive note it was good to see three 16 year olds in the squad on Saturday( 2 of which started). It’s reassuring we have the young lads willing to step up and and put in a shift for us when required.

At Easington Sports FC our Wildcats centres have now been running for over 5 years. In that time, we have seen the integration of over 100 new girls players across six affiliated girls teams within the Oxfordshire Girls Football League.

The sessions are ran by ESFC Ladies players Tammy Starr and Emily Alcock, supported by volunteers from our Under 16 girls squads. The sessions are fun based football games for girls new to football with a view to providing them a pathway into an affiliated team.

We are hugely proud of our girls section and the progress this has made.

New for 2022 / 2023 we are delighted to announce our partnership with EMD Inpsire. EMD Inspire will support our Wildcats sessions as we look to welcome more new girls to football and #TheClan. VISIT: EasingtonSportsfc.com

March Town played on several grounds in the early 1880’s before sharing a ground with March Town Cricket Club at The Avenue. March Town played there until after the war.

As founder members of the Isle of Ely Football League, March played in that League until joining the Peterborough & District League.

After the war they added `United’ to the Clubs’ title, reflecting the move to the GER sports ground in Robingoodfellows Lane.

After an unsuccessful spell in the United Counties League, March appointed ex- Norwich City and Notts County player, Oscar Hold as Manager and after two seasons won the UCL Championship.

In the 1955 56 season, March joined the Eastern Counties League and finished runners up to Peterborough United Reserves. They finished runners-up to Spurs `A’ in the 1960-61 season but had to wait until the 1987 88 season to lift the Championship.

March have won the League Cup once, beating Spurs 3 2 in a two leg final, with the second leg being played at White Hart Lane.

The Hares have reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup twice, going out to Brentford 4-0 in the 1956 57 season and more recently losing 2 0 at Swindon (1977 78 season). They have jointly held the East Anglian cup with Barking in 1953-54.

March Town now runs three senior sides and a Ladies Team. The 1st team play in the United Counties League South, whilst the Reserves, A Team and ladies teams play in the Cambridgeshire Leagues

March Town also has a thriving Youth set up, with the under 18’s playing in the Thurlow Nunn League.
