EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

THE CHAIRMAN Good afternoon everybody, I am very much looking forward to the game today after a quiet month of January. Now that we are past half way in the league, it is clear there are no easy games in this division and so I fully expect a tough game this afternoon regardless of what the table suggests. It is nice to see the first team are beginning to build momentum and have put together a mini run of results against strong opposition. The squad certainly is more settled now and so Matt always felt that performances and results would follow once he had his full squad together. Who would have thought it would take until late December to get close to this settled squad! I haven’t seen as much of the first team as I would have liked, however, I thought the performance against Oxford City in the County Cup was excellent and by all accounts, we were outstanding against Bugbrooke at the weekend. I really hope the team can continue to play the right way and create the chances this afternoon to pick up all three points. Elsewhere this weekend we have a busy schedule of matches with all ladies and mens teams in action. Our development side are in the semi finals of the Intermediate Cup this afternoon whilst the Clan are still well placed in Oxfordshire Senior League 1. This is a fantastic position to be in and we are really pleased with the way players do move up and down through the sides and so it is great to see progress for all squads this season. Lastly, for those people that do ask me about the continued improvements to the ground… we have now submitted an application to upgrade the canopies and the clubhouse end of the ground. We hope to extend the covering filling in the gap between canopies whilst adding an additional section onto the end nearest the school fields. We also have work planned to extend the hard standing to complete the 3 sides of hard standing to meet ground grading standards. We are very much looking forward to a busy 2022 as we continue to get back to business as usual after the pandemic. Fingers crossed for progressive and exciting 2022! With best wishes

Best wishes Richard Meadows Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road, Our last two results have been very pleasing. Lutterworth have sat in the top six for most of the season and caused us a torrid time away from home and Bugbrooke had lost one game in ten leading into our fixture. Even more pleasing, our performances in both games have been somewhere close to what we really expect from our squad now. Although Lutterworth came back into the game in the second half, our first half performance against them was aggressive with a fast tempo and we show good killer instinct. In both halves against Bugbrooke, we dominated physically and created lots of chances and should have won by a more comfortable scoreline. We have been able to continue to train regularly this month with minimal midweek fixtures and we were able to add in a Saturday morning session too which has helped to keep on top of important messages and prevent any rustiness creeping in. Hopefully we can maintain the level of fitness we are beginning to show and in some cases improve even more while avoiding any major injuries or covid cases. Chenecks are bottom of the league having won only one league game all season. Until we opened the scoring in the away fixture however, it would have been hard to separate the two sides as they caused us some early problems with Adam Doyle having to make a good point blank save in our goal. We are a much stronger and more established side than what we were then but we are well aware of Chenecks' resilience and we will need to approach this game in the correct manner in order to take the three points that we are aiming to achieve. Good luck to Chenecks for the rest of the season.

MATCH REPORT Bugbrooke St Michaels FC 1 v 2 Easington Sports FC Excellent away win as Sports dominate game . Watts and Steele make it three wins from three in January. Sports travelled to an impressive Bugbrooke St Michaels who had not lost in their last 7 games. Sports were in buoyant mood having beaten both Long Buckby and Lutterworth in their last fixtures, although the las was three weeks earlier. Sports started the game well and dominated possession and created a number of half chances. Steele, Walters, Watts, Dunn and Swann all appeared to be causing problems for the Bugbrooke side and so this would be the case for the remainder of the game. Dunn in particular was a constant threat driving forward from midfield. He had a close range shot saved by the keeper and another chance which fell to Walters but wasn’t converted. Swann and Watts combined well down the right and the Watts cross was narrowly missed wide by Steele. Half time ended 0-0 but Sports were much the happier of the two teams. In the second half it was more of the same. Sports dominated the ball and showed good patience on the edge of the box saw the ball moved to Watts whos deflected shot went past the hapless keeper. Minutes later it was two. Swanns thow in was half cleared and Swann reacted first. After moving past a number of players his low front post cross was converted by Steele. A two goal lead was an accurate reflection of Sports dominance throughout the game. Bugbrooke were awarded a soft free kick about 30 yards out to the frustration of Sports. The Badgers midfielder then curled in an excellent shot into the top left. Whilst this made the last few minutes nervous for Sports they managed the game well to close out an excellent away win.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 35 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female and a pan disability squad. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

The club was founded as Chenecks FC in 1946 under the guidance of well-known Coroner Sergeant of the Borough Police, George Lloyd. The club was formed to enable boys at the rugby playing Northampton Grammar School to play football. The club's unusual name is derived from the School Houses, Chipsey, Spencer, Beckett and St Crispins. The club became members of the Northampton Minor League playing at Under 17 level, and when the team were too old for youth football the club joined the Northampton Town League in 1950, playing at Abington Park. In 1960 the Old Northamptonians Association invited the club to become one of their sports sections, thus Chenecks became ON Chenecks and relocated to the Billing Road sports ground. They joined the United Counties Football League in 1969, and have had continuous membership ever since, albeit for most of the early years in the lower divisions of the league. The club has twice won the Division One Championship in 1977-78 and 1979–80, but were denied promotion to the Premier Division due to ground grading criteria as the club were restricted to develop their shared facilities. ON Chenecks beat Tam O'Shanter from Coventry to win the 1985 Daventry Charity Cup final and in 1994 they were Northants Junior Cup runners-up, losing 1-0 to Vanaid. In 1996 they lost 4-0 to Cogenhoe in the Daventry Charity Cup final having beaten Southern League Rothwell Town 1-0 away en route to the final. In the 2009–10 season the club won its first major honour under the guidance of Andy Marks when they picked up the Northants Junior Cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals N’ton Silbey Rangers at Nene Park. The 2010–11 season saw rookie manager Graham Cottle accept the vacant position. Under his guidance the club had considerable success, winning the Northants Junior Cup in 2013/14 and 2014/15 and gaining promotion to the top UCL flight for the first time in the club’s history after finishing runners up in 2015/16. The club also participated in a national competition for the first time, defeating Sun Sports 2-1 in the FA Vase. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr E Slinn, developments have also progressed of the field, with the erection of floodlights, extra seating, pitch barriers etc over the last couple of years which has enabled the club to secure the sufficient ground grading criteria. In 2016/17 as well as participating in UCL Premier Division topflight, the club entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing to Harefield United in a replay. After finishing a highly respectable 12th position in their first topflight season, Chenecks had a change in management with highly respected UCL prolific goal scorer Ben Foster taking over the managers hot seat, with a 17 th place finish in the 2017-18 season and 15th spot secured in 2018-19. Club Secretary Bryan Lewin picked up the UCL Administrator of the Year Award in 2019. As with all other clubs and leagues, the last two seasons have been affected by the Covid pandemic, which has seen both campaigns unfinished, although both the First and Reserves did reach the UCL Supplementary Cup finals in 2020-21, with the Reserves defeating Harborough 4-3 after penalty kicks to secure the trophy. In the close season Ben Foster stepped down for personal reasons and has been replaced internally with two of his backroom staff; Lee Burdett and Wayne Richardson promoted as Joint Managers.
