THECHAIRMAN

Last weekend saw us put in a very resilient and professional performance against Histon FC. The squad looked sharp and took their chances well and will need to put in a similar level of performance again today if we are to progress to the next round. We are delighted to welcome Roman Glass St George today to Addison Road. We never met in the Hellenic league and in fact as we moved out to the UCLS, they moved in. Their long journey to us today reminds us of the challenges we would have faced had we remained in the UHL. Roman Glass St George have also got off to a good start to the season so Andy and squad will be under no illusions as to the task ahead. We apologise for the inconvenience this afternoon in coming to Addison Road re parking. Unfortunately we have recently been informed that due to building work we can not utilise BGN school for parking which has a knock on effect. We hope to manage things by utilising the dry weather and grass area. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. If you are local and can walk to us then this would be appreciated. Away from todays fixture our Development squad kick off their season today. Good luck to Nick, Jason and Spike. The majority of the squad are 16/17 years old, and exciting local players. We wish them well on their journey with The Clan and will watch their progress during the season ahead. I hope the game this afternoon will be an enjoyable one. Please do keep yourselves re hydrated using the bar and have a safe journey home Best wishes

Today will mark a special occasion for Tom Smith who makes his 100th appearance for the club which is an unbelievable achievement and shows just how committed to the cause this lad is. He mentioned in one of the previous programme notes that he will be looking for a testimonial in the near future! Tom is great lad and is key to our philosophy with his attitude, strength & commitment. He also got our dramatic late equaliser in the last round to take us back to Addison road!

Good afternoon all , welcome back to Addison Road where we return our focus back to the Fa Cup against another very tough opponent in Roman Glass St. George. They have started the season strongly with some decent results and will be travelling to Banbury full of confidence.

The past couple of weeks have been excellent on & off the field for the club. Following our tense penalty shoot out win we needed to dust ourselves down and go again against a very good Histon side. The gameplan was executed perfectly with 3 goals and a clean sheet. We were rock solid for the entire game with Histon becoming very frustrated as the game went on. I was also delighted Mason got himself on the scoresheet, he is progressing at a fast pace and learning game by game, with the type of lad he is he won’t get carried away either, he will keep putting pressure on himself and giving 100% in games and training! This will be the same for the rest of the squad, with the group we have we will never drop our standards in the changing rooms they are putting pressure on each other which is great to see. Also other lads are returning to full fitness including Luke Swann who is getting back to the player we know & love. We currently have a squad of around 23 players all wanting their chance so there is no slipping up they are all playing for their shirts from goalies to the strikers this is how it has to be. If players are absent or low on form other players will get a chance. With all open age teams winning impressively this week we have the place buzzing again, there’s so much talent coming through the ranks. The Dev team start their season today with a very young group of players that we will be keeping a very close eye on Good luck to Nick and the team. Finally I know I keep mentioning it but your support & backing in the last couple of games has been outstanding, please turn up in your numbers again, grab a beer from Vicky, be loud & get behind us!

Sports secure dominant win with goals coming at important times Sports comprehensively beat Histon FC, but important goals which came at key times in the game were crucial. It was the hosts, fresh from a two hour coach journey who started the better. The number 9 threatened in behind and hit the post. However, after 15 mins Sports started to dominate. An excellent move saw Convey feed the ball to Peters. He held the ball up well and found Swann who fired into the top corner on 18 mins. Whilst the lead didn’t flatten Sports, Histon remained in the game and created several chances. However, on 40 mins when Muckleberg switched play brilliantly to Jack Fountain he calmly finished to make it 2 0 at half time. Histon came out firing at the start of the second half, Sports changed shape and replaced Peters with O’Rourke. This seemed to unsettle Sports and give the visitors hope but 9 again missed when clean Sportsthrough.put the game beyond doubt when a trademark Convey Rose Muckleberg free kick saw Mason finish from close range. Sports managed the end well in what turned out to be a comfortable win.

In 2021/2022 Andy Sharman managed the Development squad to the UHL Division 2 title and OFA Intermediate Cup Final. With Matt Giles stepping down, Andy Sharman was appointed managed with Tommy Kinch and Mark Boyland assisting. Sharman will once again focus on using local Banbury based talent to compete in the UCL, giving a chance to many from the Development and Clan squads. In 2022 the club were awarded Level 3 FA Accreditation, with 38 affiliated teams and over 600 players. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female, a pan disability squad and over 50’s football. We also work in partnership with Oxford United in the Community, offering free Women Wellbeing, Premier League Kick and Primary Stars sessions as part of the programme. Relocation remains a priority for the committee and trustees to ensure that our facilities match the growth and needs of the club. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football.

The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change after tireless fund raising by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. Sports became winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and led the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid fifties. In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semi professional teams including Aston Villa ‘A’ and West Bromwich Albion ‘B’

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY

The Club was formed in the immediate post war period of 1945/46 to fulfil the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of whom were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C.

Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted and remained as members until 2021 In 2018/19 Ben Milner and squad won promotion to the Premier League being crowned Champions before two Covid affected seasons. A review of the NLS saw Sports move into the United Counties League South and a new challenge. In our first season in the UCLS, Matt Giles managed the squad to 14th with impressive wins including those against Coventry United and Rugby Town.

Following Promotion to step 5 of the pyramid Roman glass st George FC had 2 Seasons in the Toolstation Western league Premier division and now due to the restructure, compete in the Hellenic Premier division.

The club also entered the FA Cup in 1891 and the inaugural FA Amateur Cup in 1894. The current ground at Bell Hill was opened with a match between a Bristol & District XI and the English champions Aston Villa in 1894. In 1897 the club turned professional and spent two seasons in the Birmingham & District League. The club reverted to amateur status in 1901 and continued that way until joining the Western League in 1928. In 1935 after struggling financially they dropped out and joined the Bristol & District League once again. They won the first division only once in 1949/50 but were always a leading team until they became founder members of the Bristol Premier Combination in 1957. St George played in this league winning it five seasons in succession from 1963/64 season to 1967/68 until they joined the Gloucestershire County League on its formation in 1968.

Roman Glass St George in the Premier Combination immediately gained success, winning promotion to the Premier Division that season and then winning that league in 1998/99 season to earn promotion to the County League. The club won the County league in 2001/02 and then season 2006/07 which resulted in promotion to the Toolstation (Western) League, a league the club last played in, in 1935.

The club Roman Glass St George is the result of an amalgamation between Bristol St George and Roman Glass.

The Sixties was the Golden era for the club as in addition to winning these league titles they also managed to win the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup, five times which included four successive seasons. Success was also found in the FA Amateur Cup when they regularly took on the top amateur clubs in the Country such as Hendon, Dagenham, Hayes and Leytonstone in front of crowds numbering thousands. St George won the County league in 1969/70 and was runners up twice before a gradual decline in fortunes until in 1987 the club were expelled from the league due to sub standard facilities. A return to the Premier Combination saw a brief improvement resulting in winning the Premier Division in 1992/93. With no promotion gained the club nosedived and were in danger of folding when Roman Glass stepped in.

Roman Glass originated as a street team called Wyndham Wanderers in 1960 and played in the Bristol Church of England League and then joined the Bristol & District League in 1974. The club enjoyed moderate success gradually climbing the leagues and in 1980 changed its name to Roman Glass. The club began to decline until in 1990 Roger Hudd took over as manager and steered them to win the Division 4 title the club continued to improve gaining successive promotions until the amalgamation in 1995.

Bristol St George was formed in 1882 and is the oldest club in Bristol. They were founder members of the GFA in 1886 and won the GFA Senior Challenge Cup on two occasions 1894 and 1895 beating Eastville Rovers 3 1 on the first occasion.
