THE

CHAIRMAN

Good evening all, Good evening all and welcome to Wokingham and Emmbrook FC Supporters and club officials for the second time in just a few days. For those of you unaware, ESFC are hosting the replay of the FA Preliminary Round due to pitch issues at Lowther Lane, the home ground of our opposition today. It was nice to speak with a number of officials from Wokingham and Emmbrook FC at the weekend. They are a very similar club to ourselves and they are keen to promote a pathway from youth into adult football. Therefore for many players on show this evening, this will be a great opportunity to get a result and to put the team they have played for over the years through to the next round of the FA Cup. Based on the match at the weekend, this is going to be a hard game to predict. It was a keenly contested affair and I can’t remember either keeper having a shot to save. It is perhaps no surprise that we are back for the replay this evening. I understand why the FA Cup needs to start so soon, but for most sides at this level, the fixture represents the first competitive fixture for the season, and this certainly showed on Saturday. Both sides seemed a little nervous which is understandable and neither team really settled down to play with any real quality in the final third. Matt Hammond had a chance to put us through with a one on one chance and I am sure he would have taken this opportunity had it been a few more games into the season. Whoever wins the match this evening I am sure the prize money will be a welcome boost for the club and will help build momentum going into the first league games of the season at the weekend. I hope you enjoy the game this evening and do have a safe journey home.

Good evening and welcome to Addison Road, We get a second bite of the cherry tonight. We were pleased with some aspects of our display on Saturday but disappointed in others. Tonight, we will look to build on the solid base that we demonstrated and hopefully show more quality in possession. Both teams now know what each other are about a little more so for spectators, it will be interesting to see how this changes the approach from both sides, if it does at all. We are still not at full strength which is continually frustrating. We are still without Josh Rose and Henry Rose through isolation and we now know Piers Walton is further away from a return than we all originally thought after failing a fitness test on his ankle before Saturday's game. Matty Crowther remains cup tied. We also picked up some knocks on Saturday which adds to the unavailable list for tonight’s game. All that being said, I feel we have plenty of quality in our squad to compete and even dominate games at this level and it is a good opportunity for the players to perform and keep their places in the team moving forward. We will be approaching the game with a positive mindset and lots of confidence. Despite the current lack of a manager, Wokingham and Emmbrook didn't seem phased on Saturday, showing they have enough quality and character to compete at step 5 as they too looked solid and posed a strong threat from set pieces, something we are very aware of going into this replay. I wish all involved at Wokingham and Emmbrook good luck for the season. Best Regards

MATCH REPORT Easington Sports FC 1 v 1 Wokingham and Emmbrook FC First competitive game ends in stalemate. Easington Sports FC played their first competitive fixture In almost 300 days in the FA Cup which ended in a draw. Sports went into the game without Josh Rose and Henry Rose (Isolating) and Matty Crowther (Ineligible). Sports welcomed back Tom Smith and Piers Walton from injury and handed debuts to Brad Walker, Matt Hammond and Lewis Baldwin. Wokingham and Emmbrook started brightly and caused problems through long throw ins and set pieces. Whilst Sports came back into the game chances were few and far between Wokingham and Emmbrook FC took the lead through a good header by their defender from another set piece. However Sports responded straight away with Josh Bowden scoring from the next attack. W and E protested but these were waived away by the officials. Sports had some good chances to seal the win but neither side could find a winner. The fixture is to unusually be replayed at Addison Road with the W and E ground currently unavailable.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 35 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female and a pan disability squad. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Wokingham & Emmbrook FC - Club History Wokingham & Emmbrook Football Club was formed in the summer of 2004 by the merger of 2 long established clubs from Wokingham. After a somewhat nomadic existence in recent years we have now re-established senior football back in Wokingham commencing the 2019/20 season at Lowther Road Emmbrook almost 20 years since Wokingham Town moved from their Finchampstead Road Ground in 1999. In our first season as Wokingham & Emmbrook, as the merger ‘bedded-in’ and the re-structuring took shape, under the guidance of Glenn Duggleby as manager and Dave Evans as his coach, we finished in 11th position in the Hellenic League, Division 1 East. In the season 2005/06 we finished in 3rd place, our highest ever placing in the league, having been in contention for the championship for most of the season, under the experienced guidance of Tony Calvert, as 1st team player-manager and Dave Evans as his coach. The season 2006/07 started with the managerial partnership of Jez Lynch and Danny Humphries under the chairmanship of Kearon Brown. Despite the three’s best efforts both on and off the pitch they parted company with the club leaving a legacy of some excellent players who would go on and serve the club well. In November 2007 the experienced Allied Counties manager, Wayne Wanklyn, was appointed. Wayne, a former professional player with Reading F.C. and former Wokingham Town 1st team player-manager, appointed existing reserve team boss, Roger Herridge as his assistant & Sam Page, from the Allied Counties set-up as his coach. During his tenure Wayne secured promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division and won the Reading Challenge Cup at the Madjeski Stadium in May beating Woodley Town. In 2010 Wayne stepped down as First Team Manager and the club again looked internally, promoting Roger Herridge to First Team Manager and Dan Bateman to Assistant Manager and enjoyed a strong finish to their first season in the Hellenic Premier League finishing 11th. Season 2011/12 saw more young local players progress through the Allied Counties team into the first team and saw the clubs first matches in the FA Cup in over ten years. A successful season saw the Sumas finish tenth in the league, reach the quarter final of the League Cup and win the Reading Challenge Cup at the Madjeski Stadium in May. In Season 2012/13 the Sumas were able to go a step further on the previous season, because, as well as retaining the Reading Senior Cup beating Marlow United 2-1 in the final, the Satsumas finished in 8th place in the Hellenic Premier League. The 2013/14 season saw Wokingham & Emmbrook FC returning back home to Lowther Road, but having to drop down a division, playing in the Hellenic Division One East. Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston took over the reigns as joint-managers, in a season that ended up with Wokingham continuously climbing the table and ending up runnersup in the league. The Sumas also retained the Reading Senior Cup for the third season running, beating local rivals Finchampstead 5-0 at Madjeski Stadium in the final. The 2014/15 season saw the Sumas determined to challenge for League honours and promotion from D1 to the Premier League. Again managed by Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston this turned out to be one of the most successful seasons since forming Wokingham & Emmbrook, not only winning promotion as League Champions, but also retaining the Reading Senior Cup with a hard fought extra time victory over local rivals Binfield and also just missing out on the County Cup losing in the final to Reading YMCA . Based on the FA /Hellenic ground requirements the team moved into a ground share for the second half of the season with Henley Town but the 2015/16 season saw the demands of ground sharing take its toll as the team struggled to retain their League position and being relegated. For the 2016/17 season a management change saw Clive McNelly step up as first team manager & John Austin take on the reserves mantle. Playing out of Lowther Road, Emmbrook, unfortunately, the season did not pan out as expected with a number of player changes during the season, leaving the Sumas close to the bottom of Hellenic D1 east at the end of the season and the reserves in a similar position in D2. In the 2017/18 season there were a number of changes within the senior section, with the thriving youth section taking over the running of the senior teams under the existing youth section committee. Steve Williams took over as Club Chairman, Bob Good, an ex-Wokingham player himself, Club Secretary and a full set of committee members involved in every aspect of running the club. The new committee appointed Dan Bateman as 1st team manager, with a support team of Clive McNelly and Jamie Shepherd from the previous season. The reserves, who moved to the Thames Valley Premier league were managed by Ian Narraway (Naz) and Mark Best. As a result of these changes both teams challenged well in their respective divisions in Hellenic and TVPL leagues. The 2018/2019 season saw Dan Bateman look to youth introducing several of the successful U17s players into the team and whilst there was no silverware the team finished 6th and more importantly laid the foundations for the future as we look to challenge from our newly revamped home ground in Emmbrook .In addition to youth, there was also the welcome return of Matt Eggleston to First Team Management with Jamie Shepherd and Ben Winship as First Team Coaches .The reserves continued to progress again managed by Ian Narraway and Mark Best finishing a creditable 10th especially bearing in mind the amount of young players who featured regularly . 2019/2020 - Following the Local Council’s approval of the planning application in July 2018, the Club were delighted to return to Wokingham with new facilities at Lowther Road that included floodlights, a 100 seater stand and associated works. That season also saw the reintroduction of an Allied Counties U18 team . Despite a great season, due to Covid the team who were pushing for a 3rd place finish had to see the season curtailed . 2020/2021- The season started with some great performances and results but was again curtailed . However this time with the team unbeaten and sitting at the top of the Hellenic East Step 6 , have been promoted to Step 5 and the newly reorganised FA Structure , playing in the Combined Counties North . In addition as the season recommenced we also advanced to the Subsidiary Cup Final narrowly losing to Abingdon Town . We now look forward to this new challenge , albeit sadly seeking new management as joint managers Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston stepped down during the summer . Their contribution has been immeasurable and we are pleased they will stay involved with the Club in the future . As a club we continue to thrive running 56 youth teams , a successful Girls and Ladies section , and at both ends of the scale we run a Football Fun initiative regularly attracting on average over 50 young and enthusiastic 4-7 year olds and at the other end we have a successful Over 50’s Walking Football team that won the Thames Valley Premier League and a senior tournament at St Georges Park.
