THE CHAIRMAN Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road. I would especially like to welcome our visiting players, management and officials for this United Counties Premier fixture. There is certainly growing uncertainty around the national situation regarding COVID and so it is great to get the game on. I would urge all spectators and players to be mindful of the situation and do please sanitise hands on entering the clubhouse and we will do what we can to keep the air flowing through the building. As I look ahead to the fixtures ahead, our next home fixture is on the 3rd of January 2022 and so I hope that we can keep the season going and that this fixture goes ahead! Looking at the game this afternoon, I am sure we are in for a close game. The pitch is going to be heavy and either side could have taken all 3 points in the game between the sides. Sports’ squad has settled down in recent months and I think the results have shown that we are a hard side to beat. We are delighted to welcome Levi Steele into the first team squad and this will be his home first team debut. Levi has a great scoring record and was exceptional for our youth sides in the past. He is exactly the sort of player we need to bring into the club as we look to give local talent the chance to establish themselves with us before progressing to the higher levels of non-league football. Levi might just be one of these players and so I look forward to seeing how Levi settles into the squad and how he finishes the season. I wish him all the best and fingers crossed, he can score the goals we need to propel us up the league. I hope we are in for a good game this afternoon and I hope you enjoy our last home fixture before the festive season really kicks in. Stay safe all and I hope we see our home support again in the new year.

Best wishes Richard Meadows Chairman

Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road, Our game against Potton at home seems a long time ago now. I thought we struggled to produce the intensity that we had begun to expect and this was reflected in the way the game panned out. As I mentioned prior to the game, Potton are better than their league position suggests and they were the better team throughout. To come away from the game with a point is great testament to the belief and endeavour we have in our squad. Our character was tested when they pressed us high and in the first half we showed a lack of bravery; In the second half, I felt we addressed this and kept possession, although not progressively enough, much better. Frustratingly, since the Potton game, we have had two weeks of training cancelled and a match postponed which has prevented us continuing our progress. Against Coventry Sphinx last Saturday, we dominated possession in the first half against a very strong wind and created a couple of good chances. Despite this, Coventry had too much energy for us in the second half with us having to make three forced substitutions. On a positive, this meant we got some good minutes into a couple of players who in normal circumstances would have been eased back to match fitness with less game time. With the lack of ball contact time allowed to us due to the cancelled training sessions and postponed match, we have had the opportunity to review the first half of the season with the players and set some targets and principles that we will look to achieve moving forward. So far, this has been very much a transitional season with the change of leagues and player turnover; we will now look to settle down into something more regular for the remainder of the season so we have a good solid base leading into next pre season. We are still carrying a couple of injuries but we are now looking as healthy as we have done all season which should aid things settling down; hopefully this remains the case for a while now! We enjoyed an even contest away to Wellingborough last month picking up what we considered a good point on the road. They currently sit in 7th place amongst a runaway group at the top of the league which affirms what we know will be a tough game. They are very organised and don't concede a lot of goals so we will have to improve our goals scoring form to pick up three points. In current circumstances, a point against a strong side will be acceptable for us but I do know we are capable of winning this game when at our best. Good luck to Wellingborough for the rest of the season.

MATCH REPORT Coventry Sphinx FC 1 v 0 Easington Sports FC Sports lose by one goal again. Sphinx edge close game with late goal in difficult conditions. Sports travelled to Coventry Sphinx on a cold and windy afternoon to face Sphinx who showed at Addison Road what a good side they are earlier on in the season. Levi Steele made his debut up front with Watts, Northover and Dunn returning to the side. In an even first half Sports tried to play through the wind with some adventurous shorting passing. The best move of the half came from our goal kick. Some excellent play between Goddard, Rose, Bayliss and Steele saw Dunn make a run into the box only for his shot to fly off the bar. Sphinx grew into the game as the half wore on and White had to make a few decent saves. Sports would have felt pleased going into the break at 0-0 knowing that the wind would be in their favour in the second half. However, they struggled to find their passing with the wind and it was Sphinx who started the brighter. White was again forced into action making a number of good saves. The only goal of the game came from an excellent ball from the Sphinx captain from midfield which found the runner. He then finished well to take the lead. Steele hit the post late on but Sports were reduced to 10 for a sin bin to Sherpa Moore for throwing the ball away. Lots of effort from Sports but just lacking the quality to break down a good side.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 35 affiliated teams. Our youth teams include both boys and girls and our open age section now includes three male, two female and a pan disability squad. We remain committed to providing those in the local community with a pathway into football. Our lateral movement into the UCLS for 2021 /2022 provides a welcome new challenge.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

HISTORY OF WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN F.C (The Doughboys) UP TO THE PRESENT. The original club was formed in 1867 and is the sixth oldest football club in the country. The club was a founder member of the first professional football club in the country. Wellingborough Town are also the oldest club in the County of Northamptonshire. Upon formation in 1867 the club played under part Handling Code until 1869 when they became a true soccer club. At that time the club ground was in Broad Green, Wellingborough. The club colours were old gold and black. The first secretary was a gentleman by the name of Thomas Slinn. In 1879 Wellingborough Town became the first club to play under floodlights when they entertained Bedford at the Bassett's Close, Wellingborough. The game was a close encounter with Bedford winning 1-2. The lights were powered by generators positioned at each end of the pitch. In the 1880's Wellingborough F.A was formed as was the East Midlands Association and in 1887 these two Associations merged to become the Northamptonshire F.A. In 1894 the Wellingborough Charity Cup Competition started and by this time the Club was playing on the Thomas Field, Union Lane. Wellingborough. In the same year the Club became founder members of the Leicestershire & Northants League and in the following season joined the Midland League. The first recorded winners of the now 1st Division of the United Counties League were Wellingborough Town Reserves. The following year, 1896-97, saw the Club become founder members of the United league. In 1899-00 the Club were runners-up in the Midland League before joining Division 1 of the Southern League in 1901-02. It was at this time they moved to their current ground at the Dog & Duck, London Road, Wellingborough. The Secretary at that time was a Mr S.J.Burns. In 1905 the Club changed it's name to Wellingborough Redwell but resigned at the end of the season after finishing bottom of Division 1. The first recorded silverware was won when they became League Champions in 1910-11. The Club continued to be known as Wellingborough Redwell until 1919 when they reverted back to their former name of Wellingborough Town F.C. In 1922 the Club ground record of 7,169 was set when they entertained Kettering Town in the Maunsell Cup Final, winning 2-1. The Wellingborough goals were scored by Harry Loasby and Stevens.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

The Club records during the twenties, thirties and forties in the Northants, East Midlands, United Counties and Central Alliance leagues are somewhat scant and it was not until the fifties that that the league history of the Club was recorded in more detail. However, there were lean periods in the fifties before some success was recorded when Wellingborough became winners of Division 1 of the United Counties league in 1962-63. They repeated this success in 1964-65 during which time they only dropped six points. They successfully applied to join the Metropolitan League in 1968-69 and finished a creditable 7th. The following year however, they were League Champions and in 1970-71 they joined the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division finishing a creditable 3rd. With their ambitions now on a 'high' the Club joined the Southern League Division One North in 1971-72. The Club was able to maintain mid-table positions throughout the seventies before a reorganisation of the league saw them entered into the Midland Division of the Southern League after the League was split into Southern and Midland Divisions with no Premier Division. They remained in what was known as the Southern league, Midland Division until 1988-89 when they were relegated to the United Counties l League. There then followed 13 years of struggle with the Club avoiding relegation from the Premier Division of the United Counties League on several occasions. Their worst dreams became a reality when in season 2001-02 they folded and resigned from the League. This was a black period in the history of a club that had formed the back-bone of the first professional league. Wellingborough Town has figured prominently in the annals of the F.A.Cup and many exciting encounters have been recorded against old opponents such as Peterborough United, Kettering Town, Corby Town and Cambridge City. The pinnacle of their Cup success was when they reached the First Round proper in 1965 being drawn against Aldershot, who at that time were in the Football League Third Division. Despite losing 2-1 Wellingborough were not disgraced. The Club has been traditionally known as 'The Doughboys' which derived from the traditional local dish of 'Hock & Dough'. Wellingborough's most 'famous' son is Phil Neal who started his career at the Town before moving to Northampton and then to Liverpool. His glittering career with Liverpool and England was followed closely by his many local admirers who saw him progress from the Dog & Duck to such exalted venues as Wembley, the San Siro and numerous other international stages. The Town had been without a senior football team for a period of two years when a local retired Senior police Officer, Laurie Owen, formed group of sporting friends in an attempt to resurrect the 'Doughboys'. He was joined by a local businessman, Alan Warwick, whose father played for the 'Doughboys' in the twenties and the then Mayor of Wellingborough, David Smith. David's brother was formerly Manager of Aberdeen and St. Mirren in the Scottish League. Together these three persons recruited other friends including Peter Ebdon the former World Snooker Champion who agreed to be President of the Group, Paul Joy a local Magistrate and Brian Hill, the former Premiership referee. Each member recruited additional friends until there were 24 people who were prepared to get the Club back on it's feet. The Dog & Duck Football Ground was owned by Geoff Coles a local businessman who has since moved to Portugal. 10 years ago part of the ground was sold to Whitbread's who built a travel-lodge. This obviously reduced the overall size of the ground, the training ground and grandstand remained with the pitch being moved and a new clubhouse and dressing room block built.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

In their first season back in senior football the team finished second in the United Counties League Division One and were promoted to the Premier Division after losing just one game. The NFA Junior Cup was also won after beating Peterborough Northern Star 2-0 after extra-time at Northampton Town's Sixfields stadium. A third-place finish under new player-manager Nick Ashby was a very creditable effort and very nearly culminated in promotion back to the Southern League. During 2007-08, Nick Ashby resigned and was replaced by Jason Burnham. Jason himself stood down a year later with the 1st team seeing the season out with Joe Smythe and just avoiding relegation. With Joe standing down at the end of 2008-09, Rob Gould was appointed manager, having been a player at the club 12 months earlier and had just spent a season as manager at Northampton Spencer. We finished the season in a creditable mid-table position. Season 2010-11, after a hesitant start we finished 5th in the League table, with most of the players signing on for 2011-12. Season 2011-12 saw the Club finishing in a mid-table position. For Season 2012-13 we have a ground share agreement with the newly formed AFC Rushden & Diamonds making their inaugural appearance as a senior club, taking part in the UCL Division 1. After a poor start to 2012-13, Rob Gould stood down as Manager. Craig Adams, U-18’s Manager stood in temporary before the appointment of Phil Mason. Phil had previously managed Woodford Utd. for 10 years during which time he took them from the UCL to the Southern League. Due to private commitments, Phil stood down at the end of November with Craig taking over again as Manager. A couple of months prior to the end of Season 2013/14, Craig resigned from the Club to take over at Bedford Town. After a short spell of senior players looking after affairs, Ben Watts was appointed Manager ably supported by Ash Civil. After a poor start to Season 2014/15, Ben Watts was replaced by joint managers Steve Herring and Joe Smyth. At the end of season 2014/15, Steve Herring and Joe Smyth stood down with Jamie Wright being appointed manager assisted by Colin Cooper. Jamie had recently been assistant manager at Bedford Town but was well known at Wellingborough, having had a number of spells as a player originally starting as a 16 year old in the U-18 team. Colin Cooper had been manager at Bugbrooke. Following an unsuccessful start to season 2015-16, Jamie Wright and Colin Cooper resigned from the Club, mid September. Craig Adams having recently departed from Rugby Town was appointed Manager. Craig after a few weeks stood down, to seek pastures at a more senior level, following which Dave Williams was appointed Manager, with Jon Mitchell his assistant. Stuart Goosey being a coach. Dave has been involved with the UCL for a number of years and also managed Rothwell Town when they were in the Southern League. Dave himself stood down early November, due to distance living from Club, this left Jon Mitchell as Manager and Stuart Goosey as his assistant. Jon Mitchell stood down at Christmas, 2016 leaving Stuart Goosey as manager who was ably assisted by Mark Starmer, as a coach.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

Stuart stood down as Manager, early January, 2018 and his assistant Nathan Marsh, who had only been appointed a few weeks earlier, was asked to take on as Caretaker Manager. He then appointed Gary Petts as his assistant. At the close of Season 2017/18 Nathan was replaced by Gary Petts who in turn appointed long standing player Joe Rich, as his assistant. Again at the end of season 2018/19 we had a change of Managers and players when we appear to have made a complete swap with Cogenhoe. Jake Stone joined us as Manager with his brother as assistant, and we saw the return of Rob Gould as coach. Seasons 2019/20 and 2020/21 were badly affected with the Covid-19 pandemic, and League fixtures being suspended due to Government legislation restricting activities.
