THE

CHAIRMAN

Good evening everybody I would like to welcome you all to Addison Road for our first Hellenic Premier game of the season. After such a prolonged pre-season the league can finally get underway and so I am looking forward to our second season in the Premier Division. Tonight we host Wootton Bassett Town FC and I am sure we are going to be in for a very tough game. Our visitors caused an upset at the weekend and knocked Southern League Didcot Town out of the cup and by all accounts, thoroughly deserved their victory. This would certainly suggest they have turned things around after a disappointing season by their own standards last year. Sports have a lot to be positive about too despite our exit from the FA Cup on Saturday. Matt Giles has put together a solid squad, adding to those who impressed last season with some exciting talent and plenty of youth. Whilst everyone is disappointed with Saturdays exit, we can be pleased with the performance and the dominance shown during 90 minutes. The performances are consistently starting to improve which can only be a good thing moving forward. I am sure both sides will be keen to pick up their first points of the season and so we can expect a high tempo game with plenty of commitment. It obviously goes without saying that this season is likely to be heavily affected by the Coronavirus. So far there has been so much thought put in by clubs across the country to ensure spectators remain safe whilst enjoying local matches. I urge you all to be very aware of the need to social distance and to stand in groups of no more than 6. Please do make use of the hand sanitiser entering and exiting the clubhouse to protect yourselves and others. I hope you have an enjoyable evening and do please have a safe journey home. Good evening and welcome to Addison Road, I was pleased with our result against Tring Athletic in the FA Cup. I didn’t think they posed us too many problems but to get a win and clean sheet in our first competitive fixture of the season was certainly a good start. Losing on penalties in the next round against Dunstable was not nice for anyone attached to Easington. Over the course of 90 minutes, I felt we were the better side and had more than enough opportunities to win the game. Despite these opportunities, we lacked good end product and ultimately let ourselves down. There were lots of positives to move forward with though and we will keep improving. I wouldn’t read too much into our result against Wootton Bassett before lockdown at the end of last season. We have had a big turn over of players and we are still settling into something slightly different. That game could also have turned out differently if Joe White hadn’t have made a great penalty save. Wootton Bassett had a good result on Saturday in the FA Cup and we are very much expecting a tough game. I wish all involved at Wootton Bassett good luck for the season. Matt Giles Manager

MATCH REPORT Dunstable Town 1 v 1 Easington Sports FC 7-6 PENS CUP EXIT FOR SPORTS AFTER PENS Easington Sports exit the FA Cup after penalty shoot out drama saw Dunstable Town progress. It was the first ever meeting between the two sides, and it was a bad start for Sports. A midfield run to the edge of the box was only half cleared to the Dunstable midfielder Mulonda who rocketed a half volley into the bottom right corner after only three minutes giving Joe White no chance. Sports recovered well and in truth dominated most of the half. Sports dominance was reflected in the number of corners awarded and effective long throws. On each occasion they looked a threat but were never able to capitalise on their dominance. In the second half it was more of the same. Tireless work up front ensure that Sports remained on the front foot. The equaliser finally came when the excellent Henry Rose headed a corner back towards goal for Lloyd Sabin to poke the ball home. Sports had a number of more corners and chances for Walton and Northover but the breakthrough never came through. The game went straight to the lottery of penalties and it was Dunstable Town FC who progressed as 7-6 winners. Sports can count themselves unlucky in a game that in truth they dominated.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB

EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 31 affiliated teams, both boys and girls, and once again have a development team looking to give local players a direct pathway from youth football into Hellenic League football. However, our proudest moment came when a Craig Robinson goal secured victory for Ben Milners team, ensuring promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division for the first time in the clubs history.
