THE
CHAIRMAN
Good afternoon all Welcome all to Addison Road for our fixture today against Tuffley Rovers. It is nice to be back at home for our second Hellenic Premier Division game but like most committee members across the country right now, it is much more enjoyable to watch our sides away from home! There is so much planning and preparation to do in order to get the matches played and so I am extremely grateful for all the efforts from the other committee members and club volunteers that will be helping today. We must have one of the smallest clubhouses and changing rooms in the league and this presents so many problems for us, not least, that we cannot offer hospitality to our opposition today. Under government guidelines, all adults will need to wear a mask when entering the clubhouse and will need to be seated in order to be served. We have also set up a tea bar in the car park to allow people to remain out in the fresh air and by now you will all be aware of the need to keep your space in the stands and around the ground. We would be very grateful if you could help all club officials and helpers to make it an enjoyable afternoon for us all by following the advice and following any instructions. It is perhaps a sign of the times that last weekend we had to postpone our fixture against Westfields due to a unclear COVID test for Josh Rose. Thankfully his second test came back negative and so the first team were able to fulfil their fixture against Fairford in the week. Despite playing well in spells, by all accounts, lapses in concentration and poor discipline cost us. Although Cinder Lane is a tough place to go in any season, last year we returned with all three points and this started a run of 7 straight wins in all competitions. This boosted confidence and pushed us up the table. I am sure Matt Giles will be keen for his side to put in a much more impressive defensive display today in order to get something from the game. I certainly do not read too much into the league table at this stage of the season. Tuffley picked up their first win of the season in the league on Tuesday and so I would expect them to be keen to build on this again today making it another difficult game for our boys. I am certainly looking forward to the game today (despite the weather forecast!!) and I hope we are in for an entertaining game. I would like to wish everybody a safe journey home. Good afternoon and welcome to Addison Road, I thought we were excellent against Wootton Bassett and could quite easily have scored 5 or 6 in that game. It was perhaps our best attacking performance at Addison Road since I took charge as manager and was certainly an indicator of the change in style that we had been looking to implement in the very early stages of this season. I thought we backed this up well with a steady performance against Ardley on the Saturday in the FA Vase, although the match was much less entertaining and probably not the most enjoyable for the spectators. Again, I felt we could have easily scored 5 or 6 goals and it would have still been a fair reflection of the game. This highlights an area of slight concern though as although we have created a lot of chances over those two games, we didn't capitalise as much as we should have and against better teams this will cost us. We play one of those teams today and should expect a different challenge all together. Holmer Green posed a different challenge to us last Tuesday as they we a much more physical side in comparison to Wootton Bassett and Ardley. We didn't deal with this very well and they looked a yard sharper than us all over the pitch which meant we conceded a lot of possession. Without this possession, we were unable to created as many goal scoring opportunities and thus didn't take the small amount that we did create. This was followed up by a poor performance against Fairford where for the opening 15 minutes we looked very inexperienced. We went on to create some good opportunities and should have levelled the game at 2-1 only to be punished further. Both of these games are good evidence to support my comments above regarding taking chances against stronger teams. Tuffley will be another tough test for us and a physical battle. They took their chances against us well last season despite their position in the table at the time and they are proof that there are no easy games at this level and you always need to be at your best. We will be looking to halt some poor form and get back to winning ways of course. I wish all involved at Tuffley good luck for the season.

MATCH REPORT Fairford Town FC 4 v 1 Easington Sports FC Bad day at the office as Fairford capitalise Easington Sports suffered a heavy defeat away at Fairford Town FC on Tuesday night which offers much food for thought after recent cup success. Bradley Cox returned to the side with Elliot Barton unavailable and it was Cox who had an eventful first half. Fairford started well and following a mix up between Cox and White Fairford capitalised to score early. A second followed soon after with the attacking left back capitalising on an error to cross for the forward to tap home. Sports sparked into life and after some excellent passing Joe Eyre curled home from outside the box to half the deficit. However, a clumsy challenge by Cox on the Fairford striker saw a penalty awarded. Joe White dived low down to his right to save. In the second half five minutes changed the game. An excellent moved by Joe Eyre saw a cross find Luke Swann only for him to blast over. Minutes later Fairford broke. The referees assistant raised his flag causing chaos in the Sports defence only for him to drop it as the striker finished the change. Despite Easington protests the goal stood and Henry Rose was sin binned for his remonstrations. Fairford soon made it four with a low shot from outside the box. Sports created and missed a few more changes with Peters and Dunn looking lively when they came on. Sports were clearly frustrated with a number of decisions that went against them and inconsistency from the officials throughout the night, however that doesn’t excuse the seven bookings obtained and heavy defeat.

EASINGTON SPORTS FOOTBALL CLUB
EASINGTON SPORTS FC HISTORY The Club was formed in the immediate post-war period of 1945/46 to fulfill the sporting and social needs of the young people of the Easington housing estate in Banbury, many of who were returning from war service. The Club, then known as ‘The Clan’, soon prospered, as there was an obvious need for such a facility, and formed a cricket, tennis and a ladies section. Football was, however, the main branch of the Club’s activity, and they began playing in the local Junior Leagues as Easington Sports F.C. The football was played on pastureland to the west of Wykham Lane, and for a few years endured the lack of facilities enjoyed today by almost all clubs. (No water available on site, no real changing facilities to name but two of the privations to be met on a cold winter’s afternoon). Fortunately, this situation was soon to change, for as a result of tireless fund raising by all concerned and some dedicated work by stalwarts such as Gordon Vivash, Tim Fountain and many other committed club members, the prospect of a new ground owned by the Club became a reality. The purchase of the Addison Road ground and the building of a clubroom, together with the Club’s entry to the Oxfordshire Senior League was the beginning of senior football for Sports, and to their credit they proved to be a formidable force at that level. (Becoming winners and finalists in the Senior Cup and heading the Premier League table on two occasions in the early and mid-fifties). In view of their success at county level the Club sought entry, and was accepted into the old Warwickshire Combination, which at that time counted professional and semiprofessional teams. (Aston Villa ‘A’, West Bromwich Albion ‘B’ and teams which now grace the Conference as members). Although having moderate success in this competition, as with many other amateur clubs; finance played its part in the decision to return to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where the expenses, in particular travelling, were much more in line with the club’s limited income. Looking to raise their standards once more, the Club sought entry to the Hellenic League. Subject to certain ground improvements they were readily accepted, and have remained as members of Division One ever since. With some ‘ups and downs’, Sport’s have almost always been mid-table at the end of each season, which, considering their amateur status against mostly professional or well-sponsored opponents has not been too bad a record. The Club has always sought to give the youngsters of Banbury and district an opportunity to get into senior football, and indeed beyond, and has continually run youth teams at various age levels. Wishing all those whose ability took them to higher levels good luck, and feeling grateful that the club gave them the start/plat- form to their careers. It has sometimes been said that Easington Sports have not been ambitious or forward looking enough in their sixty years, but shrewd and cautious stewardship by series of committees over the years have ensured that the club has never overreached itself financially, and has remained faithful to its original ideals to provide football of a good standard for local youth. In 2019 the club were awarded Community Charter Standard Status and currently have 31 affiliated teams, both boys and girls, and once again have a development team looking to give local players a direct pathway from youth football into Hellenic League football. However, our proudest moment came when a Craig Robinson goal secured victory for Ben Milners team, ensuring promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division for the first time in the clubs history.
