Caterpillar Big Head

The Caterpillar Bighead is designed for children to be able to develop their balancing skills by walking and running across it. You will need small tyres along with 3” bolts and budget paint. There is no need for cement as you can compact the earth to form the foundation around the tyres. Make sure you have at least 1.5 metres of space around the caterpillar.

Instructions 1. Choose a layout for the caterpillar base. It will need to be quite long. It’s a good idea to place the tyres on top of the ground to get a feel for how it will look. Once satisfied, use the shovel to mark around each tyre so you know where to dig. For the base of the caterpillar, you will be using 7 tyres. Dig the holes to about ½ the depth of the tyre and fill in with dirt once the tyre is in place. The part of the tyre sticking out of the ground should be about 40 cm/16” high.

2. Now you will be attaching tyres on top of the ones you just buried. It’s easier if you attach these together while they’re on top of the tyres they will be attached to. It works best if two people each hold a tyre in place while a third person drills two holes into each tyre and then attaches them together using two bolts. The top tyres should span the gap between the bottom tyres. The last tyre (the “tail”) will be halfway buried in the ground. 3. Once all of the top tyres are in place, they must be attached to the bottom tyres. This can be done by putting four bolts into each side of the upright tyres, attaching the tyres on top. Attach all of the tyres on top in this manner. 4. Take the last 6 tyres and attach as seen above to make a ‘head’. Use two bolts to attach each tyre to any touching tyre. 5. Bury the bottom tyre. Angle the four tyres of the head so that two point outwards to represent eyes. Make sure the head is buried as close to the body as possible. 6. Paint Colour scheme Paint the legs and body green. Paint the front two ‘eye’ tyres blue and the inner rims white.
