Caterpillar Crazy
The Caterpillar Crazy is designed for children to be able to develop their balancing skills by walking and running across it. You will need small tyres along with 3” bolts and budget paint. There is no need for cement as you can compact the earth from the foundation around the tyres. Make sure you have at least 1.5 metres of space around the caterpillar.

How to build 1. Choose a layout for the caterpillar base. It will need to be quite long. It’s a good idea
to place the tyres on top of the ground to get a feel for how it will look. Once satisfied, use the shovel to mark around each tyre so you know where to dig. For the base up the caterpillar, you will be using 9 (7 single and 2 tyres bolted together see above picture) of the tyres. Dig the holes to about ½ the depth of the tyre and fill in with dirt once tyre is in place. The part of the tyre sticking out of the ground should be about 40 cm/16” high. 2. Now you will be attaching tyres on top of the ones you just buried. It’s easier if you
attach these together while they’re on top of the tyres they will be attached to. It works best if two people each hold a tyre in place while a third person drills two holes into each tyre and then attaches them together using two bolts. The top tyres should span the gap between the bottom tyres. The last tyre (the end of the “tail”) will be halfway buried in the ground. 3. Once all of the top tyres are in place, they must be attached to the bottom tyres.
This can be done by putting two bolts into each side of the upright tyres and into

the tyres laying on the top (see diagram). Attach all of the tyres on top in this manner.
4. Using the last three tyres attach one to the double set at the front of the legs as
shown above (the green tyre attached to the two blue tyres in the diagram). Then attach the last two tyres together with two bolts to form eyes then attach these to the front tyre. 5. Cut out holes in the lowest points of all the tyres so they don’t hold water. 6. Paint.
