Welcome to the March issue. We hope you are making the most of the lovely weather, I for one cannot believe how beautifully mild and dry it has been this winter, my 4th here in the Algarve. I've been to the beach already this year, and it was delightful! This month we met with Loyd and Clare of Siesta campers, to find out what drove these modern day free spirits to settle down in the Algarve, and what unique experiences their camper van business can offer. We also introduce Eddie from the Hairy Lemon pub in Cabanas. We bring you a succulent steak dish from Mont' Belo, our handy guide of things to do in the area and health advice on spotting the signs of a stroke. All this along with our regular gardening, environmental and more. Thank you.

On July 21st the ever-young veteran rocker billy idol travels to the algarve to take the main spot at the 2012 bikers' Festival. the gig is part of an extensive european tour for idol which includes a gig in Oporto. idol returns to Portugal after a gap of nineteen years when he opened for bon Jovi at the alvalade stadium in 1993. last year, the successful bikers’ event starred iron maiden and the success of the event, and its trouble free nature, has meant that higher profile acts are looking at including it in their tour schedules, or playing a one off gig to a hugely appreciative crowd.

Judiciary and maritime police are investigating an incident in which a yacht, carrying illegal immigrants on board, crashed into a pier in the tavira inlet and sank. the yacht’s six-man party was interrogated by police and border and immigration (seF) officials for several hours on tuesday after the yacht crashed into the side of a pier during the early hours of that tmorning.heirsuspicions were roused after it was discovered the eight-metre yacht was carrying two brazilian women and a young boy who were in the country illegally. the remaining three occupants were spanish males. suspicions were further stoked as the vessel was unfamiliar to the local authorities and it departed during the early hours of the morning despite adverse weather iconditions.tisbelieved the six individuals travelled to tavira from spain by car and boarded the yacht, which was anchored in Quatro Águas, near the tavira island, at around t7.30am.hetwo brazilian women are of around 40 years in age while the boy, believed to one of the women’s son, is 17. it has been reported that the circumstances surrounding the crash are also being investigated. “the boat has a spanish flag and it registered an engine failure. With the ebbing of the tide it was pulled towards the pier and it crashed, suffering a leak and inevitably, sank”, said sameiro matias, captain of the tavira port. a warning has been issued to other boats sailing in the region as the vessel’s wreckage remains submersed on the inlet’s bed. its removal must be organised by the yacht’s owner.

S ymptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes an effusion. a variety of causes—hereditary, developmental, metabolic, and mechanical—may initiate processes leading to loss of cartilage. When bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, bone may be exposed and damaged. as a result of decreased movement secondary to pain, regional muscles may atrophy. Oa can cause a crackling noise (called "crepitus") when the affected joint is moved or touched, and patients may experience muscle spasm and contractions in the tendons. Occasionally, the joints may also be filled with fluid. humid and cold weather increases the pain in many patients. Oa commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and the large weight bearing joints, such as the hips and knees, although in theory, any joint in the body can be affected. in smaller joints, such as at the fingers, hard bony enlargements, called heberden's nodes (on the distal interphalangeal joints) and/or bouchard's nodes (on the proximal interphalangeal joints), may form, and though they are not necessarily painful, they do limit the movement of the fingers significantly. Oa at the toes leads to the formation of bunions, rendering them red or swollen. some people notice these physical changes before they experience any pain. Oa is the most common cause of joint effusion, sometimes called water on the knee in lay terms, an accumulation of excess fluid in or around the knee joint. some investigators believe that mechanical stress on joints underlies all osteoarthritis, with many and varied sources of mechanical stress, including misalignments of bones caused by congenital or pathogenic causes; mechanical injury; overweight; loss of strength in muscles supporting joints; and impairment of peripheral nerves, leading to sudden or uncoordinated movements that overstress joints. arthrosis vs arthritis distinguishing between arthrosis and arthritis is often confusing. but the two are completely different syndromes. arthrosis is a noninflammatory condition that involves wearing of the cartilage of the joints. but arthritis is characterized by an inflammation of the joints. diagnosis is made with reasonable certainty based on history and clinical examination. X-rays may confirm the diagnosis. the typical changes seen on X-ray include: joint space narrowing, subchondral sclerosis (increased bone formation around the joint), subchondral cyst formation, and osteophytes.

And you PortuguesethoughtLawswereCrazy!

Since moving to the Algarve I’ve often heard English people talking about some of the crazy laws in Portugal, such as having to keep all the legal documents for your car in the vehicle thus ensuring that if your car is stolen, the thief will get all the legal paperwork as well.

don’t you just love English law? By Trevor Holman

W ell that may seem daft to some of the english, but not as crazy as some of the laws still on the statute books in england - the home of crazy laws. the law commission in england is currently deciding which laws should be included in the repeal bill to be passed through Parliament, but until that happens, all of the following laws are still on the statute book. i promise you - every one of these is true. it is illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas day! this was one of numerous christmas laws passed by the incredibly puritanical Oliver cromwell in the 1640’s, because in his opinion the over-indulgent festivities of christmas went against his beliefs in abstinence and hardship. however, when most of his silly laws were revoked in 1660, they forgot to include the one about not eating mince pies on christmas day. so, you’ve been warned ! in york, you may kill any Scotsman with a bow and arrow - except on Sundays! due to the history of antipathy between the english and the scots that seems to have existed forever, York city council declared a by-law that allowed the killing of scotsmen, provided it was done with a bow and arrow and did not take place on sundays. however, in august 2006, the people of York were asked to sign a treaty that they wouldn’t kill scots at anytime - even robin hood nstyle.ever-the-less, this particular law is still on the statute books, so i would suggest that if you hail from edinburgh, be sensible and only visit York on sundays. in Chester, you may kill any Welshman with a bow and arrow, but it must be done inside the city walls and after midnight! the english weren’t that keen on the Welsh either and this friendly little by-law from chester city council still exists to this day, although the chester Police recommend you don’t put it to test. Why the foul deed could only be committed after midnight seems to have got lost in history, but my recommendation is that if your surname is Jones or evans – avoid late night strolls in chester. it is illegal to get drunk in a public house or a bar! i know - it’s the one place you can virtually guarantee that most people will get drunk. this particular gem of a law was in fact created to enable landlords to eject drunks from their premises, but as the law stands at the moment being drunk in a pub or a bar in the uK is illegal. every Black london taxi Cab must carry a bale of hay and a sack of oats! a lot of people already know about this one and it stems from the days when taxis or hackney cabs as they were then known were drawn by horses, but the law has never been repealed. it is illegal to stand within 2 metres of the reigning monarch without socks on! i would love to know how this one came about. i can only assume that the monarch at the time took great exception to the aroma wafting in their direction from the un-socked individual next to them. We know many historical characters from history were executed for all manner of offences against the monarchy, but i wonder if anyone lost their head because they didn’t have their socks on. it is illegal for a boy under the age of 12 to see a naked mannequin! i am all in favour of child protection in this day and age, but i’m really not sure about this one. this particular law, or should i say by-law, which came from liverpool city council during the victorian era, is still on the statute books - so window dressers beware. it is illegal for a woman to eat chocolate on a public conveyance! this is my personal favourite. it is another glorious by-law from the wonderfully eccentric city fathers of liverpool. What their problem was i have no idea, and why pick on the fairer sex, but the law has never been repealed and to this day a woman found eating chocolate on a bus, a train, the ferry or a taxi within liverpool’s city limits could if the police so wished be arrested, taken to court, tried, found guilty and end up with a criminal record.

Cas do Polvo

This month we caught up with Eduardo and Nicole from Casa do Polvo Tasquinha in The delightful casa do Polvo tasquinha (tasquinha is a place where traditionally fishermen would meet to divide the proceeds of the previous days catch, enjoy a glass of wine and some food), situated in santa luzia is home to the well renowned Octopus (Polvo) dishes and traditional Fado evenings every Wednesday. We joined them to take in the wonderful ambience created in the tasquinha and enjoy the Fado. casa do Polvo will have been opened just 2 years on the 1st of June 2012. eduardo and his partner nicole have created a stylish and warm environment and are very proud of their links and passion for the local people and in particular the fishermen. the walls are adorned with photographs, paintings and tributes to the people of santa luzia, the oldest living character being tia Zeta, visible with both her arms in the air. these photos have been collected by rui salvé rainha and published in his book. eduardo advised us that "the Octopus is bought frozen and defrosted, and that casa do Polvo sold an amazing 13 tonnes of cooked octopus in the year 2011" an astounding amount of Octopus which must surely be a Guinness World record. anyone who has visited nearby barril beach will be aware that anchors from fishermen’s boats are strewn along the beach. the tasquinha now proudly has a huge, restored anchor which eduardo and nicole have painstakingly salvaged. after much work, sand blasting several times and of course after gaining the important permission from Pedras del rei and the mayor from santa luzia, they have created another tribute to the local fishermen. it was taken to tavira , restored to its former glory, and can now be seen next to the beautiful octopus sculpture and paintings which were created by the brothers carlos and João Fonseca martins famous local artistic family. the Fado evenings are very intimate and passionate. casa do Polvo, have contracted singers teresa viola, and

Santa Luzia for an update after opening nearly two years ago. marcio Gonçalves. teresa from moncarapacho comes from a family of Fado singer’s, her brother Pedro is also very well known. she has an immaculate, romantic and dramatic style and appears all over the algarve. marcio is from santa luzia and practically started singing in public at the casa do Polvo. after many successful rounds of qualifying, he has recently appeared on rtP1 television, in the Grande Premio do Fado and having won, he is now a contestant in the final to be held in lisbon, in casino estoril in October. they are accompanied by musicians ricardo martins, from s bras alportel, on Portuguses guitar, anibal vinhas, from tavira, on viola, and antonio correia from Portimao who plays big bass. marcio and teresa are often joined by other amazing local Fado singers every Wednesday. there have been some changes to the international menu, as well as the amazing douradas, sea bass, steaks and spaghetti dishes created by the 5 star chef. the staff at casa do Polvo casa do Polvo, speak 5 different languages and can translate and explain the Portuguese menu. We are very fortunate to have such great local talent, and as the evenings have been booked out, it is advisable to reserve your table. as the warmer weather approaches eduardo and nicole plan to open up the patio doors and offer dining al fresco, and possibly hold the evening when the moon is full, which would be stunning overlooking the promenade and the ria Formosa, one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. We wish eduardo and nicole continued success, and good luck to marcio for the final in October. many thanks to everyone at casa do Polvo, it was a pleasure meeting them again. We are very lucky to have such talent in our local area. booking, casa do Polvo creates a stunning ambience, amazing dishes with local history to make a memorable evening. Bar toque, just a minute’s walk from the river Gilao, is the very latest international hotspot to have recently opened in the stunning town of tavira. combining style and service you will find a very warm and friendly welcome from simon, rich and ange. the bar which has been modernised to create a stylish, fun and chic feel is now open tuesday to saturday 7pm until late. simon, rich and ange met socialising, became friends and having all settled here in the east algarve had all thought for some time that they would like to open a lively, unique meeting place for everyone to enjoy in town. simon who is originally from norfolk visited the east algarve over 13 years ago for a 2 week break. he made the decision then that he would eventually like to live here. Working in the uK as an it director for a company who built off shore gas platforms, it took 5 years to find the right plot of land to build upon and a further 4 years getting the planning permission. after 2 years commuting to and from Portugal he now runs and is the owner of tavira Web (see advert). rich, from south london originally moved to santa catarina in 2007. he bought the Quinta Fonte do bispo, a rural hotel in the lovely hillside surrounding tavira with his father, and ran this with him for a year. having worked as an art director for homes and Gardens and ideal home magazines in the uK he started the east algarve magazine in 2008. ange, visited the algarve many years ago, firstly in the far west in the small fishing village of burgau. born and brought up in north Wales, but based in essex for many years, it was a visit to tavira in late 2010 that she decided to stay and to buy the dream home in the amazing town

Where good people and great music come together

www.eastalgarvemag.com and the sunshine. having worked for many high street, mainstream travel agents as well smaller specialist independents she was ready for a career change but still keen to use the face to face people skills. though determination, drive and ambition they have re opened the bar, which was sadly closed for many years. it has 17 now come back to life! Why not catch up with old friends over a cool refreshing drink. bar toque serves draught and bottled beer, whiskeys, cognac, liqueurs, brandies, cider or Guinness or enjoy a glass of house or bottled red/white and rose wine, or maybe a refreshing juice a house shot or cocktail, as well as our freshly ground tcoffee.heinternet and sports channels are being arranged as well as a patio area at the front of the bar for you to relax as the warmer evenings approach. the great (need another word) music and ambience, through the week is key as well as the varied live music evenings taking place once a month on a thursday. Friday will see Karaoke, monthly for the singers out there and saturday will be party and dance night. simon, rich and ange would like to welcome you all to join us, have fun and maybe make new friends as we already have in our first week of opening. We very much look forward to seeing you all soon.

I f you would like to escape the hustle and bustle of the town for a few hours, why not take a relaxing island boat tour? We were fortunate enough to be invited on an island boat tour last month and as we enjoyed it so much, we thought we'd tell you all about it. the boat leaves from the Olhão taxi pontoon at 1pm every day. the unique selling point of the tour is your host captain steve, (that is captain/ guide/waiter/1st aider/lifeguard etc), and his trusted companion nuttela the dog, named so because he is chocolate and nuts! steve is an official guide of the ria Formosa natural park and his knowledge of the flora and fauna is abundant. he has lived here in the east algarve for 7 years, after leaving sunny california, where he obtained the import licence for hobie pedal kayaks which he now sells here in the algarve. he found that they had revolutionised the kayak, bringing them into the 21st century. they are dry and easy to use and suit everyone. it was on a kayak that steve stumbled across culatra island and he was blown away by it and couldn't understand why there were no boats taking people to see the "real algarve". so, he decided to do it himself and his aim is to provide a stress free, amazing afternoon for you. if theres anything you want to know, don't be afraid to ask, my children and i certainly learnt a lot about the local culture and took some fantastic ephotos.spadarte is a very stable, safe and comfortable boat. it has twin 70hp motors and is licensed for 14, seating 12 with ease. sea legs aren't unecessary.ponleaving Olhão, we headed to culatra island, where we stopped for a special lunch that normally serves some of the 600 residents of the island, rather than catering

for the tourist market as the town restaurants do. the food is as fresh as you can get and hence, full of flavour and great value, a sardine platter is approx 8.50€, their fresh clams in garlic butter are the best. sometimes the fisherman walk in with a fresh variety of fish they have just caught. it doesn't get much fresher than that. the children enjoyed playing safely on the beach. after lunch, steve takes you for a short walk around the village, exploring the narrow streets and quaint houses, steve informs you about the inhabitants in the local community. be careful though, he has been known to squirt passengers with the occasional sea slug! after the walk, we headed back to the boat and took a short trip to a deserted beach to relax, collect shells, swim, snorkel and just take in the nature for approx 40 minutes. We then headed off in the direction of armona island and desembarked for a cold beer or a coffee ,relaxed and enjoyed the fantastic views. at approximately five thirty, the boat departed for Olhão, passing the old water mill and a very small residential island, (with no electric or water) by the name of coco island. We arrived back as the sunset, again, with some great views and photo opportunites.

captain steve is now also operating a lunch tour, which departs Olhão at 1pm and heads to culatra for a fantastic lunch of fresh fish or meat (vegatarian also avalible) in a quaint fishermans beach restraunt with some time to explore the island before the boat returns to Olhão at 3.30pm, for only 20€ per person with discounts for larger groups. the price for the afternoon tour is 30€ for adults, under 7's are free and over 7's are only 10€. For more information or to book a tour, call catherine or steve on 964 147 497/966 034 723 and mention the east algarve magazine or visit www.ktalgarve.com

O ne thing that became clear during the financial crisis is that not all debt obligations are equal. Where your pledge to repay a loan seems to be written in stone this is not the case for a bank. if a bank has financial difficulties it is considered ‘too big to fail’ and governments intervene with bail outs to avoid the bank from going out of business. if you have a mortgage on your property and you fall behind with your monthly payment schedule, the banks are not very lenient to assist you during a difficult period. actually, it is more likely they will demand repayment in full. so when a bank is having financial difficulty they get bailed out, where on the other hand your debt obligation to the bank seems to be written in stone. if you owe a bank a small amount of money and you fall behind payments it is your problem, if the amount owed is large enough it is the bank’s problem. there are people who argue that Portugal should default and would be better off leaving the euro and go back to the escudo. they should be careful what they wish for as they may not like the result. For Portugal the introduction of the euro lead to declining interest rates, which before used to be in the mid to high teens. mortgages are priced using a base rate - euribor – plus a spread/mark up for the bank. if Portugal would leave the euro, the base rate will be determined again in lisbon by the central bank of Portugal and rates will shoot up dramatically. if you know that a staggering 94% of all mortgages in Portugal are floating rate mortgages based on 3 or 6 month euribor,

21www.eastalgarvemag.com can imagine what will happen with the monthly repayments when the base rate will be readjusted. there will be defaults on a large scale. how could it happen that there are so few fixed rate mortgages in ForPortugal?this to explain you have to understand how a bank is funded. their funding is coming from funds on saving accounts, interbank borrowing and the issuance of all sorts of bonds with short, medium and long term maturity dates. each source of funding has a different price (interest rate). some sources of funding are more stable and therefore costlier. in other words, a bank uses a mix of funding sources to keep the cost of money down. they monitor the average duration of their loan portfolio closely to see if the funding mix is appropriate for the current economic environment. in the mid to late 80’s, banks had the balance of their funding wrong. For a long period it paid off to borrow at short term (lower) variable rates to finance the issuance of fixed rate 5/10/20 year mortgages. suddenly inflation picked up and the interest rate environment started to change. short term rates went up sharply and banks were too late to adjust, leading to large losses for some banks. in other words, the interest a bank had to pay to fund their mortgage business was higher than the fixed interest rate they were receiving. this is known as an interest rate mismatch. With fixed rate mortgages the bank carries a higher interest rate risk, which is passed on to the homeowner through a higher rate. With floating rate mortgages banks have offloaded this risk to the homeowner. When interest rates go up, this additional funding cost for a bank is simply passed on every 3 or 6 months when the interest on the loan comes up for renewal. this works fine for as long as rates are falling. When interest rates go up again, homeowners will feel the pinch and one can imagine not everybody will be able to service their mortgage obligation if rates go up high enough. Putting this in perspective to the current situation in Portugal, one can not but wonder why a bank would think that hundreds of thousands of families with little or no financial knowledge would be better at managing interest rate movements above the bank managing this themselves in a centralized, highly specialised and knowledgeable treasury mdepartment.uchhasbeen said about the bonus culture in banks and other perverse incentives that need adjustment. in the mortgage business this was –and still is – the case. during the boom period banks should have applied the brakes, but instead have acted in a highly pro cyclical manner and as such have contributed to a larger increase in property prices than what would have otherwise been the case by allowing high (80-90%) loan to value (ltv) ratios, low spreads (0.5 – 0.8%) and actively promoting floating rate over fixed rate mortgages. this means a higher number of prospective buyers qualified and were also possible to borrow more. now that property prices have fallen by as much as 30-40% banks are becoming conservative at the wrong time by Company ami 7673 Office: tel/Fax 281 952 820 mobile: 00351 911 041 861/2

We’ll take care of you and your house as we would our own. PROPERTYMANAGEMENTPROPERTYRENTALS lowering ltv ratios to 60 - 70%, increasing spreads (3.5 – 4.5%) and a general reluctance to initiate new mortgage activity due to liquidity/ balance sheet constrains. the liquidity constrains have more recently been alleviated as banks borrowed euro 1020 billion through the ltrO for 3 years at a fixed rate of 1% interest per annum. Part of this money could be used to deal with non performing loans while still make a healthy profit. unfortunately the money from the ltrO came with no strings attached. if past experience is a guideline, these funds can also be used by a bank to make easy money through the relative risk free purchase of government debt providing a yield pick up of 4 to 5%. how a bank runs their business is up to them to decide. however, when they are bailed out with tax payers money they can expect to be scrutinized by society especially when they are acting in a harmful way. For instance, if a family with a mortgage would like to change their current floating rate mortgage to a fixed rate, their interest rate will go up much more than necessary as the spread of 0.5 to 1% immediately goes to 3,5 to 4,5. the same is true when a family with a floating rate mortgage wants to move to another property while keeping the same mortgage; the spread on top of the base rate (euribor) increases immediately. in practice this means they can’t afford to upgrade or downsize and simply choose to stay where they are. the lower volume of property transactions has not lost its effect on the real estate sector. also local councils are faced with budget deficits and on the brink of default which is partly due to lower income from imt (property transaction tax). if only the banks would act in a more responsible manner, the economic downturn would be much less severe. While circumstances may change, the end result remains the same as banks often end up making the same mistakes.

J ust forty kilometres east of the border between Portugal and spain lies the grave of Glyndwr michael an illiterate, homeless Welshman who, in 1942 drifted to london where he lived on the streets and was later found dead after ingesting rat poison. unbeknown to him, Glyndwr michael was to have a profound effect on the outcome of World War two. Operation mincemeat was the most successful wartime deception ever attempted, and certainly the strangest. it hoodwinked nazi espionage chiefs, sent German troops racing in the wrong direction, and saved thousands of lives by deploying a secret agent who was different, in one crucial respect, from any spy before or since: he was dead. his mission was to convince the Germans that instead of attacking sicily, the allied armies would invade sardinia and Greece. the brainchild of an eccentric raF officer and a brilliant Jewish barrister, this great deception involved an extraordinary cast of characters including ian Fleming, who would go on to write the James bond stories; a famous forensic pathologist; a beautiful secret service secretary; a submarine captain; three novelists; an irascible admiral who loved fly-fishing; and a dead, Welsh tramp. using fraud, imagination and seduction, Winston churchill's team of spies spun a web of deceit so elaborate and so convincing that they began to believe it themselves. From a windowless basement beneath Whitehall, the hoax travelled from london to scotland to spain to Germany and ended up on hitler's desk. the two masterminds of the operation were charles cholmondeley and ewen montagu, two men with what churchill called "corkscrew minds". First, they obtained a dead body from a london coroner named sir bentley Purchase. then they set about creating an entirely new personality for the dead man, whom they designated William martin, a major in the royal marines. using false identity cards, faked personal letters, receipts, bills, photographs and other "wallet litter", they gave the dead man a father, a fiancée and a fictitious life. but most crucially they chained to his wrist a briefcase containing official-looking documents, letters written from one general to another, which clearly indicated that the allied armies massed in north africa were aiming for Greece and sardinia. these, too, were false. montagu and cholmondeley had a specific target in mind for their elaborate deception: adolf clauss, a German spy operating in huelva on spain's south coast. he was known to be efficient, ruthless and extremely gullible. On a number occasions adolf clauss travelled to vila real de s antonio to meet members of the abwehr (German intelligence) operating in the algarve. in april 1943, the body was dropped into the sea from a royal navy submarine and then floated towards the coast of spain. Operation mincemeat fooled hitler completely and German troops were redeployed to other theatres of war, thus saving thousands of british, canadian and american lives. mussolini was deposed; and the course of World War two was changed. Glyndwr michael is buried in the immaculately maintained catholic cemetery of solitude on the outskirts of huelva. adjoining the main cemetery is the unkempt and derelict british cemetery which contains the graves of two airmen, one british and one australian. their aircraft crashed near Gibraleon en-route from cornwall to Gibraltar in april 1942. the wall that surrounds the british cemetery is where many hundreds of spanish civilians were summarily executed from 1936 to 1941... but these are stories for another time. S hould we think twice before adding ash around our fruit trees or playing bach to our tomatoes? if you are confused over which tale to trust, do not fear: much has been done to test out this folklore, with interesting results. some people believe that plants, which grow above ground, should always be planted in the morning, like peas, melons, beans and cucumbers, they will grow upwards with the rising sun. Sow seeds generously One for the rook, One for the crow, One to die, and one to grow. planting by moon lore Plants that grow underground, like potatoes, onions and radishes should be planted in the afternoon so that they will grow downward with the sinking sun. some gardeners also believe that plants that grow underground should be planted in the dark of the moon and plants that grow above ground should be planted in the light of the moon. the waxing and waning moon Old time gardeners recommend that most vegetables should be planted when the moon is waxing. the only exceptions are those vegetables that form a head - lettuces, cabbages and sprouts, for example - which might make them quickly run to seed. Plant these when the moon is on the wane. planting herbs “never plant the same kind of herb in the same place twice in succession,” said an eighteenth century herbalist, replacing a ‘hot’ herb with a ‘cool’ one….a sound rule of thumb for rotation that will prevent exhausting the soil. Sinister parsley legends insist that parsley must never be transplanted or given away - if it is, death of the donor will follow within the year. if parsley does grow well, it will only do so where the wife is the master of the house! Wild thyme as a midsummer night's dream points out, banks of wild thyme were a well-known abode of fairies, which may be the reason why gypsies and other country folk would not bring the plant into their caravans or homes. no-one denied its healing properties, however. it was good for whooping cough and stomach problems, while an infusion rubbed into the scalp was reported as a sound means of delaying greying of the hair and banishing depression. the elizabethan herbalist John Gerard claims that "it helped against the biting of any venomous beast, either taken in drinks or outwardly applied". Onion lore the onion was held to be a natural weather forecaster in an old rustic rhyme, which maintained that thinskinned onions portended a mild winter, while thick and tough onion skins heralded a "cold and rough" winter. the humble vegetable was also widely thought to make hair sprout on a bald head - all that was necessary was to rub in the juices liberally, possibly mixed with a little honey! Companion planting companion planting and combining, means growing plants together that like, and or benefit each other. vegetable companion gardening can have a real impact on the health and yield of your plants in nature everything interacts to create a whole life force. this is a basic understanding... that everything organic and living has a mutual influence on every other living thing. every plant has an effect on every other plant and every creature has an effect on every other creature. Over time, gardeners have observed these interrelationships, and scientists have studied them (see chart above right) Gardening abounds in received wisdom and advice, handed down from generation to generation. But how much of it really works?

Gardens planting cabbages twist a spiral of narrow tinfoil round the roots of a young cabbage plant to inhibit the larvae of the cabbage fly. On the surface lay a piece of creosoted string in a narrow ring four inches away from the plant base to prevent an attack of the cabbage fly. any mentholated spirit can be sprayed on sprouts and cabbage to prevent mildew. bury a stick of rhubarb to prevent club root when planting cabbages. planting carrots crumble mothballs and mix them with the soil against the larvae of carrot fly, this has proved to be a good remedy where carrot fly is rife, as above with cabbage fly lay a creosoted string around your row of carrots. Soft fruit trees hang mothballs in the branches of peach, nectarine, plum trees to prevent leaf curl. You may have to explain to visitors though. greenfly never spray again, plant garlic clove beside each plant that is affected by greenfly. the roots will take up from the soil a substance from the garlic unfriendly to greenfly. You will have no smell of garlic if you do not let the garlic flower. Other members of the onion family are affected but garlic seems to work the best. Woolly aphids and whitefly nasturtiums are said to be your answer to aphids on fruit trees, growing the long trailing kind to wind around the trunk of the tree. also grow a pot in the greenhouse to prevent whitefly there. Slugs it is said that horsehair rope around rows of cauliflower will prevent slugs, also horsehair rings around trunks of trees also do the same, alas horsehair is scarce so a jar with beer in it placed in the ground will do the trick. a note from an old wife a garden is much more than a place of beauty and delight. it is an oasis for your spirit and a workshop for your soul. tending and caring for plants opens you up to daily encounters with the primal forces of life and death. R ising geopolitical tensions and high oil prices are continuing to help renewable energy find fa vour amongst investors and politicians. Yet how much faith should we place in renewables to make up the shortfall in fossil fuels? can science really solve our energy problems, and which sectors offers the best hope for our energy future? to help us get to the bottom of this we spoke with en ergy specialist dr. tom murphy, an associate professor of physics at the university of california. tom runs the popular energy blog do the math which takes an astro physicist’s-eye view of societal issues relating to energy production, climate change, and economic growth. Oilprice.com: Whilst you have proven that no renewable energy source can replace fossil fuels on its own. Which source is the most promising for providing cheap, abun dant, clean energy?

The eleventh largest in the world.

tom murphy: First let me say that i think "proven" is too strong a word. but yes, i have certainly indicated as much. When it comes to cheap, clean, and abundant, i am drawn to solar. i don't care if it's two or three times the cost of fossil fuel energy - that's still cheap. abun dance is unquestionable, and i don't see manufacturing as being inordinately caustic. the fact that i have panels on my roof feeding batteries in my garage only confirms for me the viability of this source of energy. Wind and next-generation nuclear also deserve mention as poten tial large-scale sources. Yet none of these help directly with a liquid fuels shortage. Oilprice.com: What do you think is the most exciting en ergy science or energy technology being researched at the moment? tom murphy: as cautious as i am about techno-giddi ness, i do have the giggles for artificial photosynthesis. combining universally available sunlight (in my own backyard) with a liquid fuel that can support personal and commercial transportation on land, sea, and air with minimal changes to infrastructure is too juicy for me to resist. more so than thorium breeders or even fusion, this is a real game-changer. the catch is that our finite periodic table may not avail itself to our wishes. Groups are now shaking the periodic table by its ankles, hoping that some new and unappreciated catalysts clank to the floor. i'm rooting for them, but at the same time advo cate not relying on its realization. Oilprice.com: a recent report stated that replacing all coal based power stations with renewable energy, would not affect climate change, and in fact after 100 years the only difference would be a change of 0.2 degrees cel sius. What are your views on climate change?

tom murphy: i see climate change as a serious threat to natural services and species survival, perhaps ulti mately having a very negative impact on humanity. but resource depletion trumps climate change for me, be cause i think this has the potential to effect far more people on a far shorter timescale with far greater cer tainty. Our economic model is based on growth, setting us on a collision course with nature. When it becomes clear that growth cannot continue, the ramifications can be sudden and severe. so my focus is more on avert ing the chaos of economic/resource/agriculture/distribu tion collapse, which stands to wipe out much of what we

38 www.eastalgarvemag.com Environment have accomplished in the fossil fuel age. to the extent that climate change and resource limits are both served by a deliberate and aggressive transition away from fos sil fuels, i see a natural alliance. Will it be enough to avert disaster (in climate or human welfare)? Who can know - but i vote that we try real hard.

Oilprice.com: do you think that the shale gas boom will lead/has led to reduced investment in alternative energy, and could therefore limit the advancement of alternative energy and its mainstream implementation? tom murphy: i do worry about the sentiment that "our problems are solved" based on a very short history of tapping low-hanging shale-gas fruit. david hughes presented a sobering report to put these claims in per spective. even though it is clear that shale gas will con tribute to our net energy demands in an unanticipated way, i worry that a) extrapolations based on the "gusher" equivalents is risky; b) natural gas is not a direct answer to a liquid fuels shortage; and c) the associated exuber ance can stifle the imperative that we have an all-handson-deck response to the looming challenges.

Oilprice.com: What are your thoughts on biofuels? Will they ever be able to compete with fossil fuels? if you were to pick one that you think has the best potential which would it be? tom murphy: the scale of our fossil fuel use prohibits replacement by biofuels at a substantial level. they cer tainly can and do play a role, which i anticipate will in crease with time - up to a point. the energy return on energy invested (erOei) tends to be pretty poor (less than 10:1) even for the best examples like sugar cane. and it's a heck of a lot of year-in-year-out work to man

Of the biofuels, i am most intrigued by al gae: mainly because it can be grown and moved about as a liquid medium in sealed tubes. that said, i worry about gunking up the works with bio-sludge, the algae contracting disease, and the fact that we have not yet found/created a viable hydrocarbon-excreting critter. Oilprice.com: Following the Fukushima disaster many have been calling for the end of nuclear power. What are your views? should we abandon nuclear power? are we in a position to abandon it? tom murphy: i don't think Fukushima should be seen as a reason to abandon nuclear. true, nuclear has its challenges, its risks, its hazardous wastes. but it's one of the few things we know how to do that can scale. Of course conventional nuclear again stares right down the barrel of limited resources, which is a déjà-vu we would rather not experience. so next-generation conceptsparticularly thorium - are preferable. then again, we are not prepared to execute such schemes this moment, so they are not much help in a near-term crisis. and ulti mately, like so many things, nuclear is yet another tech nique to create electricity. that's not where the pinch will come. i think nuclear will remain part of our energy mix in any case, so i don't think Fukushima spells an

Finance Taxing Times In Portugal

In Portugal, as elsewhere in Europe, austerity measures may be around for longer than originally expected. Tax planning has become even more important if you wish to protect your wealth from tax. here are some of the tax rises recently imposed on portuguese residents: • A 3.5% “extraordinary tax” on per sonal taxable income over €6,700 re ceived in 2011 • New 46.5% top rate of income tax introduced in 2011 • A 2.5% tax surcharge on income over €153,300 for 2012 and 2013 • Increase in capital gains tax on se curities (shares etc) from 20% to 25% • Flat tax rate on interest income in creased to 25% • Revaluation of properties ahead of a property tax rise in 2012 • VAT rise from 21% to 23% from January 2011 • 30% flat tax rate on investment in come paid by entities located in a “tax Forhaven”peace of mind, your savings and investments should be structured to be as tax efficient as possible; to out pace inflation and generate a natural income as needed. While the budget deficit and bail out package are the immediate concerns, once these are behind us the govern ment will have to look forward to the looming longevity issue. We are already living longer and it has become increasingly common for someone retiring now at age 60 to live for a further 30 or 35 years. While this is good news, it has implications at government and personal levels with the key issue being: how will we af ford it? As the ratio of the number of people working and paying taxes to the num ber of retired people decreases, the government will need to look else where for tax revenue so we need to be prepared for the possibility of fur ther tax rises in future. You also need to consider that you may live longer than once expected and make sure your savings and in come will be sufficient to maintain your current lifestyle for as long as needed. One of the key ingredients to protect ing your wealth will be to ensure your money is treated as tax efficiently as possible, when it is accumulating and also when you need to draw an in come from it. From the action taken by governments over rececnt years, it is clear that the old offshore world of investing in tax havens and not declaring interest or gains is dead and buried, so you need to be careful to only use legitimate tax planning Professionalarrangements.wealthmanagement ad vice is more important than ever if you want to protect and grow your wealth, legitimately mitigate the amount of tax you pay and control when and where you pay it. B anco Espirito Santo SA (BES) was among five banks in Portugal to have credit ratings cut by Moody’s Investors Service, which cited asset risks and a “poor economic outlook” in a nation whose own grade was reduced last month. Espirito Santo, Portugal’s largest publicly traded bank by market value, had its debt rating lowered one level to Ba3, Moody’s said yesterday in a statement. It took the same action for Caixa Geral de Depositos SA and Banco BPI SA. (BPI) Banco Internacional do Funchal was downgrad ed to B1 from Ba3. Portugal was among six European nations, along with Spain and Italy, to have debt ratings cut by Moody’s Feb. 13 as the region’s government-debt crisis spurs austerity programs that may undermine growth. Yesterday’s moves give the four banks grades on par with or lower than Por tugal’s, which fell to Ba3 from Ba2. Banco Santander Totta SA, the Portuguese unit of Spain’s largest lender, was cut two levels to Ba1 from Baa2. Downgrades of the nation’s lenders were generally driven by “expected further deterioration of banks’ domestic as set quality” and firms’ prolonged difficulty accessing pri vate wholesale funding sources, Moody’s said in the state ment. “While none of these pressures are new, in Moody’s view they continue to mount against the backdrop of the ongoing euro debt crisis.”

players shake hands before the game against Benfica 42 www.eastalgarvemag.com

March proved to be an exciting month for fans of the algarve’s only Premier league team. salvador agra was in stunning form in the comprehensive 3-1 win at u leiria. Goals from dady, toy and agra secured Olhanense’s third away victory of the season. as the players celebrated the second goal manager sérgio conceição was sent to the stand by referee bruno Paixão; a decision that mystified everyone! next up was a home game against nacional (madeira) and in a seesaw encounter the teams shared eight goals! this was an astonishing classic which attracted plaudits from all sectors of the Portuguese sporting press. dady’s tenth-minute opener was cancelled out by mario rondon sixty seconds later, and that set the tone for the rest of the match. twice more Olhanense re-took the lead (first through salvador agra and then dady once again), twice the madeira side pegged them back through mateus, the angolan striking either side of half-time. Olhanense have become an entertaining proposition under sérgio conceição although on this occasion he was not in the dugout. the 37 year-old former Portuguese international was suspended for 20 days and fined €2,500 following his dismissal at u leiria. With 20 minutes remaining, Wilson eduardo converted a penalty to put the home side ahead once again but nacional refused to give up on the points and claudemir struck nine minutes later to level things once again at 4-4. there was a final twist in an extraordinary encounter between the two midtable sides when referee cosmo machado inexplicably disallowed a fifth goal for Olhanense. the trip to Guimarães, the european city of culture 2012, would be a tough one and when you are two goals down at half-time all would appear to be lost. but club captain rui duarte came on at the break and the second-half proved to be a different scenario. Goals from dady and Wilson eduardo, within ninety seconds of one another, levelled the score and despite cauê being sent-off the algarveans held on for a point. BenFiCa Breeze in after defeating Fc Porto 3-2 in the semi-final of the league cup, benfica were in confident mood for their visit to Olhão but it was the local side who were to take the honours. With cauê, andré Pinto and Wilson eduardo missing through suspension and mexer out injured it was very much a makeshift team that faced the ueFa champions league quarter-finalists. benfica manager Jorge Jesus, he played 29 games for Olhanense in 1974/5, tried everything to win the points, ending the match with four strikers on the pitch: Oscar cardozo, nelson Oliveira, rodrigo and saviola. and it was saviola who saw a last-gasp shot well saved by Olhanense goalkeeper Fabiano. an uninspiring first half did not lack any amount of hard running but was short on quality and excitement. benfica centre-back Jardel, signed from Olhanense in last year’s January transfer window, spurned an excellent early chance, heading over from a corner. that was as near we got to a goal in the entire half. benfica enjoyed plenty of possession, but failed to make headway against a well organised and determined Olhanense team. there was an increase in goalmouth action in the second period, with Javi Garcia, luisao and cardozo all coming close to scoring for benfica with headers. the visitors were hit with a huge blow to their chances of earning victory just after the hour mark as Pablo aimar was shown a straight red card. What at first appeared a harsh decision

Olhanense in fine form

OlhanenSe yOung StarS Shine Wilson eduardo & salvador agra starred for Portuguese under-21s in the 2-0 victory over ukraine with agra scoring the opening goal. dady scored the first goal in cape verde’s 4-0 win over madagascar in the qualifying stage of the african cup of nations 2013. in other africa cup action ivanildo turned out for Guinea-bissau in their 1-0 home defeat by cameroon whilst mexer helped mozambique draw 1-1 in tanzania.

COmpetitiOn Winner John hawkins from manchester, on holiday in manta rota, won the two tickets for the Benfica game by correctly stating that SC Olhanense was founded in 1912.

Olhanense continue their positive season. the draw extended their unbeaten run to six matches and the algarve outfit this season have frustrated Fc Porto, sporting and benfica at the estadio Jose arcanjo, holding all three teams to a goalless draw. mOre teamS in the tOp Flight? the council of Presidents agreed to increase the number of clubs from sixteen to eighteen as from next season. but the Portuguese Fa has now vetoed the decision after complaints and representation from the top clubs. antonio Fiuza, President of Gil vicente Fc said, “the purpose of the ‘big three’ is easy to understand, they want to finish the championship as soon as possible and then do the usual end-of-season tours of the usa and angola that are extremely lucrative for them, while the smaller clubs send their players on holiday for almost two months without getting any extra income.” discussions continue to take place to resolve the impasse.

o play golf successfully strong hands are essential, so if you do not possess them already and have no interest to develop them: alrightyou are just playing golf for fun, but at least take advantage of being able to hold on to the golf club firmly at impact. the trick of the good golfer is to hold the club grip firmly enough in his hands to stop it turning at impact, yet without cramping the speed of the wrist action. two points i am going to mention which will vastly improve your game are; 1, get a good quality golf glove. most good golfers use one, because then their actual grip of the club does not depend on the temperature of the day, or on whether their hand is dry and shiny as it would be in the cold weather, or hot and slippery with perspiration in the heat. Once it is old and dry, throw it away. 2, if your club grips are dry and shiny, change them; it is always worth the expense and trouble. i change my grips every year without fail. most golfers think they are still good, but professionals cannot afford to risk ianything.fyouthink your clubs need re-gripping, bring them to me at benamor and i can change them for you, (next day service). remember, do not be mean about these two parts of your equipment good golfing!Keith. Shiny grip needs replacing glovethisisreadyforthebin!
