Meet Club captain of Tavira Golf, June Scott

Last month I met up with this years Captain of Tavira golf club June Scott to hear about her thoughts on the course and to find out a bit more about what it's been like being a club captain.

June, thank you for coming along this morning, tell me, how long have you been a member here?

Under various options about 16 years.

Wow... that's a long time, you must know the course well!

Well... you would like to think so!

What was your home course?

A small gem, a bit like this one, called Carnwath in south Lanarkshire, Scotland, it's a bit like this course in as much it's not a long course, but if you are out of position you pay for it.

How many years have you been playing golf?

About 18 years

OK, so what's your current handicap?

Currently 21.6

And your lowest handicap?

I got down to twenty, my aim is to get to 18.

What's your favourite hole here at Benamor?

I think it would probably be 14, I know it is difficult for the guys, but because of the position of the red tee's I can get there in two.

And the one that you dread?

Well, I go between 6 and 16, 16 is long for a par 4, and I am tired by the time I get to 16, especially in this weather.

How does this course compare to others in the Algarve?

Well as I have said, it is not the longest course but because of the positioning of the tree's, it is tight. I have played a lot of the courses and they are quite open, here you have just got to be fairly accurate.

What advice would you give someone who hasn't played this course before?

Stay straight... it does not matter if you are short, just stay straight.

What do you think makes this course in particular, successful?

I think it is the whole ambiance of the place, the staff, you can not fault the staff, they are all so friendly and helpful. When we had our presentation day, I came in early with the polish for the trophies, but they had already cleaned them for us, it was a lovely touch, they are like a family.

Have you been a captain anywhere else?

Yes, I was Ladies captain at Carnwath, at the same time my husband was Gents captain, a first for the club.

How has your captaincy been here?

Well obviously last year was very, very difficult because of the Covid situation, we did not manage any fundraisers, so hopefully this year... we have had one already and we are hoping to get captain's day and Charity day to raise as much money for the charities, because that's the whole point of the captaincy, so fingers crossed we can go ahead with that.

Meet artists Erik Arnell & Micael Kallin from Stockholm, Sweden.

Erik Arnell & Micael Kallin found Tavira when they were travelling around the Algarve about 10 years ago. Since then they have been back five times and have developed a love for the place. Their art is modern photo art and have been doing this since the late 1990's. They have had many exhibitions in Sweden and also in São Paulo and Lisbon. Micael's portraits have also been published in Swedish and European newspapers and magazines. They are currently exprementing a great deal with printing techniques on various materials, such as different fine art papers, aluminium and glass. Their inspiration comes from their travels. Arnell says "All our travels in about 40 countries have inspired us very much. Especially the time we spent in Brazil, where we also have lived for longer periods. This has influenced our work". The equipment they use is a full frame, digital small format camera (Sony Alpha 7ii) with a premium 55mm (Carl Zeiss) lens. They have a gallery in the Swedish real estate Fastighetsbyrån in Tavira, in front of the river at rua Jacques Pessoa 26. Normally you can meet them there on Fridays and Saturdays, 19.00-22.00 (subject to restrictions). Arnell & Micael will have their annual "Autumn Salon" in Tavira, on Friday 10th of September at 19.00. They will show a lot of new art and have a nice evening with other artists and art lovers in Tavira. Everyone is welcome to join. Padel is a racket sport which mixes physical activity with social interaction. It is a fun game for players of all ages and skill sets. It is easy to pick up and once you have picked up the basics you are set to enjoy exciting long rallies! Padel is a mix between tennis and squash, it is played in a doubles format on an enclosed court surrounded by walls of glass and metallic mash. The court is only a third of the size of a tennis court, so you won’t spend all your time picking up balls! The ball can bounce off any wall but can only hit the turf once before being returned. The point and scoring system is the same used in regular tennis. The rules allow for the use of the back and sidewalls, which results in longer rallies than in a conventional tennis match. You must be clever; strength is not an important factor in padel.
