N atural w ines @ Passion... knowledge and finally the perfect location. Here´s the story of how this Natural Wine Bar in Cabanas came about

W

e meet Olaf and Veronica, entrepreneurs, sharing a passion for natural wines, good beer, quality food, good company and a happy life. The pair have put Cabanas on the map, with people coming from far to get their fix of natural wine. Olaf and Veronica stand by their concept of natural chemical free wines. Like many, we assumed this meant organic wines, grapes grown without the use of pesticides and other harmful additives. We were wrong... Olaf and Veronica are part of a movement that is growing to support winemakers producing wine using simple or traditional methods. In the simplest form, natural wine can be described as 'nothing added, nothing taken away.' While there is no uniform definition of natural wine, it refers to wine produced without the

8

use of pesticides or herbicides and with few or no additives. Natural wines are produced on a small scale using traditional rather than industrial techniques and fermented with native yeast. In its purest form, natural wine is unadulterated fermented grape juice with no additives in the winemaking process. We are shown a diagram in the shop, it clearly indicates how many chemical additives are in conventional, organic and biodynamic wines, and the level of sulphites they contain compared to natural wine. We are very surprised at the difference and can clearly see how much better for the body it is to drink natural wine. I can already think of a number of people who will be getting a bottle gifted to them as they enjoy a glass or few and they are very much into remaining and staying healthy. Olaf and Veronica are very generous and offer us a glass to taste and enjoy with them together. We appreciate a glass of rosé PetNat, which has the most delightful and

entertaining little bubble to it, fizzing gently on our tongue, a refreshing dry and not too tart wine, perfect for a hot summer day. On their adorable, intimate terrace, we learn more about Olaf, Veronica, their concept and how they ended up in this tiny part of the world that is their paradise. 2019 is where it all begins, the start of the lockdown was nearing. Veronica's father, a pensioner, tasked his untameable Italian daughter with finding a place in the East of the Algarve for him to retire to. Veronica, having never been to this area before, set out to explore. First stop Faro, where she met Olaf from Germany, the two quickly became friends and remained in contact with each other despite travelling in different directions. Olaf was off to Lisbon while Veronica checked the East to find a home for her father. Quickly she found and fell in love with Cabanas, there was, however, just one thing missing from this paradise… natural wine. Thank heavens for

www.eastalgarvemag.com

9

her friendship with Olaf in Lisbon. After some insisting and persuading, Olaf came to visit Veronica and Cabanas, he was armed with many bottles of natural wine from Lisbon. Cabanas very much appealed to Olaf and where he was in his life, he also started loving the natural wine Veronica had introduced him to. Quite quickly the pair hatched the idea of becoming distributors to local restaurants in the Algarve and Portugal, however, this proved to be too new a concept to sell and the couple quickly shifted gears turning their storage place into a place that would be inviting for all. And so the fun began for the pair of driven foreigners… requesting licenses and permits and transforming what was a little clothing boutique into the charming café and wine bar it is today and all of this with the covid restrictions in place and with the street they are on being dug up and closed off while waiting for it to be repaved and re-zoned as a pedestrian street.

10

The hard work and efforts have paid off, the location is perfect, the street with its face-lift looks picturesque and both Olaf and Veronica beam with pride at their place in paradise. Alongside a selection of natural wines by the glass (or bottle), it's possible to order an assortment of delicious Tapas. Like the wine, the food served is top quality, from local permaculture gardens, fresh and mainly organic. The fresh goat cheese is from Azinhal (local and made naturally without chemicals added), the Halloumi and feta cheese are from Alentejo (Organic) the goat's cheese is from Serra da Estrela and sometimes sheep's cheese, blue cheese and mozzarella can be found. The terrace is perfect, we can see ourselves enjoying a glass or two of wine with a few of the Tapas. From experience, we can see how this little place is a true find. A place to sit, relax, watch the world go by while enjoying some delicious tapas and sharing a bottle or two of natural

wine and not ever having to worry about having a hangover. Visit Olaf and Veronica at Wild Thing, explore their selection of red, white and rosé natural wines made in Portugal, Italy, Slovenia and Slovakia. Or try the selection of beers they have produced by local and small artisanal brewers. Make sure to try the tiramisu, made according to an inherited, authentic recipe. If you desire something more hearty, we recommend the mixed board filled with meats, the special cheeses listed above, fruits and all beautifully presented. And perhaps you will get to meet Veronica's dad, who regularly visits the wine bar and loves every moment he gets to spend in his second home. Wild Thing can be found on the Raisin app, Facebook and Instagram. Address: Rua Capitão Jorge Ribeiro, nº 55 8800-591 Cabanas, Tavira, Telephone: 00351 920 331 439

repared to be dazzled we set off to find the newly opened Ti Maria Panorâmico in Fuseta. Pedro Peres the owner of both Ti Maria in Tavira and Ti Maria Panorâmico in Fuseta was there to greet us. Super enthused, he shows us around his new establishment. And wow, what an amazing place he has. What an incredible place to come to! The entire place is decorated perfectly in a trendy, yet comfortable style. The downstairs dining areas cater to 100 persons and has both inside and outside tables. The outside area by the downstairs pool is perfect for anyone that cannot wait to get into the water, or for those that want to wait until the last second to get out of the water! We are taken to the upstairs area, sun loungers and parasols surround the pool area. The bar can easily cater to the 70 places available and most importantly, we spot a sound system set up and ready to go.

Dining Places

Imagining how incredible roof top parties would be and look with the infinity pool overlooking the Ria, we take in a final breathtaking view of the natural sand formations the incoming tide is creating and make our way downstairs again. Unsure where to sit for the interview, we eventually decide to sit inside with an incredible view of water cascading down from the infinity pool above into the one below. It feels a little like a glamorous Hollywood film set. Panorâmico is surprisingly fairly priced and inline with competitors even with its impressive facilities. Expect the same high standard quality and good friendly service you are used to from Ti Maria Tavira and if you like a little extra kick to your dish, ask for

14

the 'Chilliboy'. A full range of cocktails are served and mainly tapas foods with generous helpings. The pool is open from 15:00 - 19:00 for all customers there to eat or drink. The entire venue or just the rooftop can be hired for private celebrations, naturally the opening hours of the pool changes to whatever is desired Contacts: Telephone: 289 791 515 Instagram: ti_maria_panoramico Facebook: Ti Maria Panorâmico Address: Rua da Cegonha 26, Fuseta 8700-061 Fuseta, Portugal

A Happiness Haven in Tavira

Founded by Iléa Menu and Erik Sprotte, House of Happiness is based on a simple yet essential mission: to offer a Happy experience, in a completely exclusive and intimate setting.

A

fter helping to bring relaxation and overall wellbeing as a Wellness Center to many local Tavira residents, either through Yoga classes, healthy cooking workshops or other therapeutic activities, House of Happiness has recently presented itself under a new concept. Inserted into a 5,000 sqm plot of land in the heart of Tavira's countryside, the villa has recently closed the doors to its old existence as a Wellness Center, only to reopen a few weeks later as a private wellness villa, available for rental in full, with capacity up to 10 people. The mission remains the same: to offer a Happy experience, now in a completely exclusive and intimate setting. Inside, guests are welcomed to four large

20

bedrooms distributed over three floors, a fully equipped kitchen, a glassed rooftop studio with a 360º view - equipped with yoga and meditation mats, and a Lounge Deck to sunbathe on or enjoy the beautiful sunsets. Outside, it's all about enjoying the benefits of direct contact with Nature as much as possible, either by practising Yoga on the 60 sqm Activity Deck, cooling off in the pool overlooking the rural landscape, admiring the organic garden or enjoying a healthy meal around the large dinner table of the Garden Patio. From special family holidays, friends' getaways and wedding ceremonies to yoga and wellness retreats or corporate events: House of Happiness is now the perfect place for anyone looking for a unique experience. A place where guests can experience happiness and overall well-being in a beautiful

and peaceful natural scenery by reconnecting to themselves, Nature and others. Besides the villa's unique facilities, guests can also enjoy a wide variety of Happy Experiences during their stay. Among the vast list of activities available on request are Yoga, Pilates and meditation classes, a wide range of therapies, healthy cooking workshops and several local tours and experiences such as wine tasting, dolphin watching or boat rides, among many others. Throughout the year, House of Happiness will continue to host Yoga and Wellness retreats, regularly announced on their website at www. houseofhappinesspt.com. The first Yoga retreat is already scheduled for the 14th to the 21st of September 2022. Bookings and more info at: www.houseofhappinesspt.com +351 961 142 121

n the current frothy property market there is logic in taking a step back and reassessing your investment goals in light of potential risks. Some areas are priced for perfection. The market has been very strong but how long will this last? If you bought an investment property or are considering to down size you may want to consider selling into a strong market. Can property prices go higher? Maybe, but nobody ever lost money taking a profit. When new price records are set it is often due to foreign buyers who are less familiar with price development in an area. Buying a property in the Algarve is also made easy when one sells up back home in a strong market. People who apply for the Non Habitual Residence programme can also justify spending more on their ideal property, as the programme offers a 10 year tax holiday. This programme is less popular now among Scandinavians than in the past. However, Americans and Canadians have filled the void as they also discovered the tax benefits of this programme. The latter also benefit from a strong currency versus the Euro which adds to the fun of property hunting. Sometimes people pay over the odds for their ideal home. We call this an emotional buy in which case other considerations are more important than just making a return on investment. There is no right or wrong in this and whether the purchase was a good decision can only be decided in hindsight and may vary from homeowner to homeowner. The continuous popularity of the Algarve as a destination has led to increasing prices of accommodation for both hotels and private dwellings under the Alojamento Local regime (short term holiday lets). Due to Covid visitor numbers to the Algarve in 2020 were weak, but have bounced back strongly. For hotels and self-catering accommodation 2022 looks to be a bumper year despite rising prices caused by inflation. The combination

of higher prices for accommodation and flights can eventually lead to a decline in future demand as it looks almost a certainty that Europe is going into a recession sometime in the second half of 2022. Traditionally, two quarters of negative economic activity means recession, but the period of contraction can last longer. Here are some reasons for caution: Possible changes to the NHR program. Rental yields have topped out, interest rates are on the up. The ECB raised rates for the 1st time in 11 years. When interest rates increase, rental yields and dividend yields usually adjust by decreasing property prices and lower equity valuations. Higher interest rates also mean that the maximum amount people can borrow with a mortgage is lower. This is likely to lead to less property transactions and increasing the number of properties for sale. There are early signs that we are moving from a vendor's market to a buyer’s market. Are you prepared for this? In Northern European countries most (often over 90%) of mortgages are on a long dated fixed rate, so homeowners are less exposed to higher interest rates. In Portugal it is the opposite, approx. 94% of homeowners have a floating rate mortgage, so within the next 6 or 12 month interest rate adjustment period the cost of their monthly mortgage repayment is going up at a time when their purchasing power is already being eroded by high inflation.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

The effect of rising interest rates may have less impact on inflation in the current environment. Higher rates are an efficient tool to fight inflation when inflation comes from the demand side and the economy is running at full capacity. However, a large part of the current inflation comes from politically motivated disruption of energy supplies and supply chain bottlenecks in general. This is not resolved by higher rates and potentially makes things worse. The taxation on short term holiday rental income may change/increase. Possible introduction of a tourist tax in municipalities that currently have none. Possible introduction of limiting factors regarding short term holiday letting (AL) legislation. ….and from a macro economic point of view: Possibility of a recession in the 2nd half of 2022 and a prolonged war between Ukraine and Russia causing uncertainty. Now that the ECB is raising interest rates again, the spreads between sovereign bond yields are widening again putting pressure on countries in Southern Europe who have relatively high Debt-to-GDP levels, with Italy being particularly vulnerable. Now that Mario Draghi has resigned, a populist government in Italy may revive financial instability across Europe. Unlike Greece, Italy may be too big to fail but also too big to save. Whether in good times or bad times, the problem with highly indebted countries is that there is never a good time to be financially prudent. They

FUSETA The famous lifeboat station in Fuseta is due to be turned into a small museum.

O

lhão Council has announced the completion of an architecture study which, it says, will be “essential” to the renovation project. The study acted as the “first thorough evaluation of the conservation state of the village’s most iconic building,” says the council, adding that the “most modern technologies” were used in the process. The architects behind the study have already presented it to Olhão mayor António Pina and local councillor in charge of public works Ricardo Calé and sent it to the board of State Heritage (DGPE). The renovation work will involve improving the structural integrity of the building, carrying out architectural and functional improvements and turning it into a small museum, run by the municipal museum of Olhão, entitled Centro Interpretativo de Paisagem e do Património (Interpretative Centre of Landscape and Heritage). Considering the lifeboat station is located in the middle of the Ria Formosa estuary, visiting the museum would have to involve a boat trip to reach it. However, these details on how the museum experience would work have not been revealed. The lifeboat station (officially Estação de Socorros a Náufragos da Fuseta) was built during Portugal’s Estado Novo authoritarian regime in the second half of the 20th century. As the council puts it, the “keys to it were handed over to the DGPE by the Institute of Sea Rescue (ISN) in 1996” and it has remained closed ever since. According to the council, the “uniqueness of its construction in the Ria Formosa and its modernist design,” along with the “esteem that the population of Fuseta and the whole borough have for the most striking building of the village’s landscape” prompted the local authority into action in an attempt to breathe new life into it. We are looking frward to the opening of this unique heritage building, an in the meantime will continue to enjoy the beauty of Fuseta.

Joined by the owner of Benamor, Gonçalo Martins Dias, to cut the ceremonial ribbon, a group of 30 players made their way onto the greens to enjoy the game. Aside from a great addition to Benamor Golf, the group intend to use the new facilities to encourage greater participation in Croquet in

THEN OLHÃO

FOUND US... ... and we weren't even looking! Hank and Carina's story of how they came to love and live in Olhão

W

elcome to our monthly column celebrating Olhão. After exploring Portugal top to bottom from Braga to Tavira enjoying so many coastal and inland locations in our RV, we decided Olhão was the place to buy our home to celebrate our “golden years”. Olhão was not on our radar at first. In fact, the discovery of Eastern Algarve was a pleasant surprise with the scale of development so much less than areas to the west. A chance winter rental introduced us to Olhão, a place we quickly found attractive for many reasons. “Walkability” is, above all, a main highlight and each month I will introduce you to places only steps away from our front door. Questions, Comments or Suggestions for new columns? Email us at hankryan2003@yahoo.com We hope you will enjoy our column! ILHA DO FAROL… THE LONG WAY! Summertime means ocean time in the Eastern Algarve. A pleasant low cost ferry ride from Olhão delivers you to any of the three nearby Ria Formosa barrier island destinations offering beaches fronting the Atlantic Ocean; Armona, Culatra or Farol.

40

Did you know you can walk from one of these island destinations to the other? The stretch of oceanfront starting from the 100% solar powered Molhe Leste beach bar on Culatra offers walking access to Ilha do Farol, technically part of the same island. The 3.5 km trek aiming at the Farol lighthouse takes about 30-40 minutes. An alternative to the beach path is through the dunes that pass through the small community of Hangares.

In either case, bring sun protection! Making the return to Olhão on the ferry from Farol completes the circuit. One structure clearly stands out here. In Portuguese, Farol means lighthouse. The village of Farol is named after the 50 meter tall building visible from both Olhão and Faro on the mainland. It was built in 1851 and it was the first lighthouse in Portugal at that time. To find the Maramais beachfront restaurant

www.eastalgarvemag.com

featured below, just use the lighthouse right next door as your guide. I’m told you can actually go up in the structure to enjoy the amazing 360 degree view of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Check it out! In addition to the beachfront destinations on both the Atlantic and Ria Formosa parts of the island, Ilha do Farol hosts cute bungalows, some being year round homes with many decked out with vibrant colors and flowers. There are several open air restaurants that you’ll discover as you walk to the ferry back to Olhão. This, of course, assumes you are willing to leave this beautiful place! With no paved roads or traffic of any kind, peacefulness reigns here! MARAMAIS The barrier island destinations reachable by ferry or taxi boat, Armona, Culatra and Farol, all feature ocean front beach bars where drinks, snacks and relaxation are on offer. Carla Sofia Martins has operated her seaside snack bar serving customers since 2005. Pictured with part of her staff (From left to right… Carla Sophia, her sister Andrea Martins, Jorge Martins and Diogo Sousa) the lighthouse next door offers an unmissable landmark. The Caribbean style sun protected seating

www.eastalgarvemag.com

area fills like clockwork during warm months as the frequent ferry landings deliver sun seekers aiming for a day at the beach. On their website, they offer the slogan, “Sit down, relax and we do the rest!” If there emerges a competition among these barrier islands celebrating where the best comfy chairs in the shade deliver maximum relaxation, we suggest Maramais wins that contest hands down. After our trek hoofing it from Culatra, Carina and I got lucky to find a few of these comfy chairs vacant and settled down for the long haul, or least as much as we could eat and drink at a respectfully slow pace :-) Maramais provides an extensive food and drink menu; Trip Advisor reviews deliver 4.5 stars. You can combine both jumping into the brisk Atlantic waters right out front with live music and friendly service. They even deliver refreshments directly to your spot on the sand! When you are ready for the 30 minute ferry ride back to Olhão, take advantage of the free outdoor shower to freshen up! Carla Sophia welcomes guests from Easter through the end of October. The sign out front says they open at 10am every day. Closing times vary with the season. Cash only please.

BAD ADVICE...

his month, we introduce (admittedly, for once), an Ex-Pat who has something important to say and real experiences to impart. It might be a first for our wayward

column. Teddy and Tamara Leafhead have set up an Algarvian Pet Sitters Watch Group after a disquieting experience, they impart the traumatic experiences of their members. (NB: A warning, when pet sitting, always check the sofa and your body weight index or it may lead to a fatal outcome. Sitting on pets, we remind the feeble-minded out there, is not endorsed by our magazine. Always follow the pet's instruction manual and check the batteries and your own). Now onto the interview. Let it be a warning to fools! EXPAT: Teddy and Tamara, welcome! Tell us why you started your support/advice group. TAMARA: Where we gonna begin!? Our friends couldn't look after our miniature poodles sweet lil' Pandora and Penelope. That's when we upped and went on Facebook to ask who could help us, 'coz we urgently had to return to Houston. TEDDY: That is when them rats were recommended… TAMARA: Those frauds, Victor and Velma Trinkenschuh. Of course, that ain't their names… TEDDY: And our beautiful Quinta when we returned… (Thumps his leg). EXPAT: Well if one of you tells us, from the beginning… Tamara begins to explain groaning in her charming Texan twang: 'It was just so awful. We are trustin' people. We needed a house and a pet sitter right away. We even asked 'em for references. I guess we shoulda guessed they were made up. The old addresses didn't never exist! We overlooked that their headmistress was called Julie Andrews in The Switzerland Finishing School and considering the near illiteracy of the emails, it seemed unlikely Victor worked for the Zurich Bank' as Head of Security... TEDDY: Leavin' our Villa for the first time was a big thang ya know. We became concerned

42

when we heard nothin' back from Portugal. Eventually, we done called 'em and there was techno beats in the background, Victor shouted at me and said it was all good and to f*** off! I shouted back remindin' him that Texas, unlike Portugal, is an open carry gun state, and our girls had best be fine! When he barked back and said 'woof, woof, we are fine' and hung up, we started lookin' for the earliest plane back! TAMARA: And what awaited us!? Our Quinta had been trashed. Hundreds of beer cans, broken glasses and bottles strewn everywhere. There was graffiti on the walls and the toilets was overflowin' as them vagrants lay about in a state of undress. Teddy went wild and picked up a broom sweepin' and shooin' them out…! My wardrobe was empty and my best handbags were floatin' in the jacuzzi! Even my best wigs were floatin' in the pool! I was livid! It was hairy! It was totally unbeweaveable! TEDDY: I started to lay into them strangers while my darlin' Tamara called the police threatening a whoopin' the like they never had ever in their lives! Both Pandora and Penelope were gone, and them bastards Victor and Velma were nowhere to be seen! TAMARA: I was cryin' hysterically as the police spoke to us, when our closest neighbors came holdin' our precious angels. They told us our two dogs just ended up in their yard! We was delighted despite the thousands of Euros worth of damage. I even found a drug addict slut called Shelley in my best Caroline Herrera dress and Bvlgari jewelry, passed out in a state of undress, surrounded by three old men! That's something Vanish ain't never gonna remove! (Sobs). Turns out she had multiple warrants out for her! TEDDY: A few days after our warrant for them, we got a text from Victor. "If you want to see your precious dogs alive, you had better wire 10,000 Euros. TAMARA: We was shocked, but played along and asked for photos. The vermin did have two dogs, but they were not ours! TEDDY: We showed the police and agreed to

meet them in Moncarapacho in a lay-by. TAMARA: Maybe we played it too cool and they twigged… They never showed. EXPAT: Were they ever found? TEDDY: No! The dogs turned up at a rescue home. Turns out them morons stole two strays… TAMARA: And they are still out there. EXPAT: Wow, what an awful experience. What have your other members faced? TAMARA: Our story seems the worst, but one member had their car hotwired and stolen… TEDDY: And the house cats that escaped never to be seen again… TAMARA: And the neglected pet while they was out eatin' in a five-star restaurants and had all their friends usin' the place like a hotel, with photos all over Instagram… It looked like it hadn't been fed in days… TEDDY: And the porn movie which was filmed in a member's Quinta with the dogs appearin' in the background of 'Silicone Seductresses'…! TAMARA: and those pet thieves known as Victor and Velma they's still out there. The last the police heard they were traced to Sitges in Spain, runnin' off with prized Persian cats… EXPAT: So what do you say to our readers!? TEDDY: Never let anyone in your house, it ain't gonna lead to good! Ours looked like a meth head rock star had stayed! You sure as heck can't buy back stupid! TAMARA: Go to a proper agency, registered, tax-payin' and real! TEDDY: Facebook just ain't the place to recruit someone to stay in your 650 thousand Euro retirement Quinta! TAMARA: And if anyone finds those bastards, we got something to say to 'em, touch our shit and… (Mimes shotgun)! EXPAT: And most importantly how are Pandora and Penelope? TAMARA: Oh our lil precious babies are real good! They is off to a dog spa in Monchique so momma, daddy and our angels can have a massage and a perm! TEDDY: Yummy! I always like a happy ending! Signing off the Expat says "don't we all". Unless you pretend your names are Victor or Velma, wherever you are!

EASTERN MAGIC IN THE ORIENT

L

Brought to you by Chris Wright

eyton Orient FC were one of many English league teams who visited the Algarve for pre-season preparation. Using the well appointed Colina Verde Golf & Sports Resort at Maragota near Moncarapacho, the east London team were full of praise for the excellent facilities and warm welcome. At the same time, London’s second oldest professional football club announced that Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, for the third year running, would be personally sponsoring the home and away kits for the club that gave him his big first team chance. Kane has paid to put the logo of mental health support organisation Shout, the UK’s only free confidential 24/7 text support service for mental health, on the front of the Club’s red home kits for the 2022-23 season. Just six kilometres from Colina Verde is Centre Algarve, Europe’s first dedicated holiday centre for those with special needs. Harry Kane MBE, along with the Spurs Legends, is an active supporter of the charitable foundation that helps to fund Centre Algarve set-up by Esssex businessman Andy Mahoney. Leyton Orient, along with many other clubs, has a rich history for charitable support as well as being a pivotable centre within their local community. At the outbreak of the First World War forty-one members of the Clapton Orient, they became Leyton Orient after WW2, team and staff joined the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (the Footballers' Battalion), the highest of any football team in the country and the first to join up en masse. Just over a 100 years ago

44

history was made, when on the 30th of April 1921 the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII, visited Clapton Stadium to see the O's play Notts County. The Orient won 3–0 and this was the first time a member of royalty had attended a Football League match. On a personal level it was about this time that my father Billy Wright made several appearances, as an amateur, for Clapton Orient. With the new season fast approaching the Orient squad, under the watchful eye of manager Richie Wellens lost 2-1 in a behindclosed-doors game against Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion before O’s went down 0-3 against Peterborough United at the Estádio Municipal de Lagos. Before returning to the UK, the management team led by manager and former Leicester City stalwart Richie Wellens, played walking football against EAWF and edged a close encounter 5-4. The O´s found it difficult to contain their enthusiasm and were constantly penalised for running, but it was a different matter when a short game of normal football followed. The ‘younger’ members of EAWF and EAFC showed their mettle with an extremely creditable 3-3 draw. Life long Orient supporter Colin Corrigan, instrumental in arranging the event was full of praise for the sportsmanship and camaraderie. Colin said, “I’ve enjoyed my sessions of walking football when visiting the Algarve, so it was good to be able to bring the two groups together.” The Leyton Orient website stated: “We would like to place on record our thanks to the members of the East Algarve Walking Football side for a wonderful afternoon”. www.walkingfootballalgarve.com

INVEST IN REALITY

future proof your life here in the Algarve!

O

ur decision to move to this wonderful country, leaving wherever home once was, would without doubt, have been thought about long and hard. Starting a new life abroad in the sun is a dream for many. For those who are brave enough to take the step to make the dream come true, for some it works out, for others it does not, for one reason or another. For many people (myself included), Portugal is home, and will be for as long as possible. I have lived in the East Algarve since 2007. During this time I have seen many people come and go, also, through running this magazine, I´ve seen many businesses come and go too, all for different reasons, but there is one reason that crops up more than any other, and that is care facilities. Currently in the Algarve there is only one live in care-home that caters for expats. There are of course many Portuguese facilities, however, the idea of living in a community that does not speak the same language as you, especially in our later years is not really an option. So we have no other choice but to leave the place we call home, and return to

46

a place we chose to leave many years ago. We leave behind our friends, the climate we have become accustomed to, and also the healthier diet and lifestyle Portugal offers. We return to a place we haven´t lived for years. Cold, dark, dreary, wet evenings, old friends who have moved on in life and with whom we have little in common with any more. I guess if our children are there, we could always become a burden to them! Personally, this would be a nightmare for me. Unthinkable! So to the point of me writing this... In 2007, my father and his partner, my wife, our three children and myself moved to Portugal. We bought a small Rural Hotel in a tiny villiage called Fonte do Bispo, close to Santa Catarina, just outside Tavira. It was the perfect size for us to run and call our home. The Hotel had six, one bedroomed cottages, a small bistro and a hall for weddings. It was a dream come true. We even launched our very own magazine to help promote activities at the Quinta. Sadly, after only a few years, licensing laws and regulations changed. In order to trade under the Turismo Rural category, we needed 15 rooms instead of only 6. It was suggested by the tourism board of

Portugal, that we turn our tiny little Hotel into a 32 room Four star Hotel, with 100% wheelchair friendly access, plus the original 6 cottages. We agreed their terms and the build began in 2013, and as you can see by the photos, is very nearly complete. In recent years, life has thrown its usual challenges, and now, I am the sole owner of the Quinta. This has brought many changes, one of them being its destiny. The necessity for a care facility in this area is a reality. As mentioned, the project is 90% complete. We are looking for an investor... or investors, to raise enough money to finish the Quinta and open a Five star Carehome/retirement village with medical centre, restaurant and more. Everything is in place. We have the builders, the backing of the local council, a company waiting to run the care aspect of the project as well as medical professionals. You will find more financial information in the column on the right. If you, or if you know of anyone who may be interested in helping me see this project through to completion, or can help in any way at all, please email: info@eastalgarvemag.com, or call me on 961 700 200. The Quinta: 32 double rooms, all with en-suite facilities. 6, 1 Bed cottages with living room, kitchenette and bathroom. Currently 90% complete. The cost to finish as a hotel was quoted as €700k. On site is also a Spa/medical centre, restaurant* and function hall*, all providing extra income streams (not included in the figures below) Also on-site, 8 staff rooms with en-suite facilities*. * Complete and ready to use. The Business: Care home for the elderly and retirement village. 32 double rooms plus 6, 1 bed cottages.

Statement from Kelly Harper, CEO of Algarve care services

"My name is Kelly Harper and I have owned a care business here in the Algarve since 2017. When I started this journey it was easier to begin with the home care side of things, but it was clear and evident that people retiring here in the Algarve need residential care options of which there are very little to none that exist at the moment! I have a list of over 40 people currently looking for residential care facilities that are NOT state owned where they can live in a secure community, where they have a comfortable, welcoming home to live out their later years with the support of a care team around the clock. At the moment, those who are non Portuguese Citizens, living in their elder years or living with a limiting condition either have the choice of private healthcare at home here in the Algarve or to go back to their native country as there are no facilities here to support their needs. Portugal and in particular the Algarve, is Europe's number one place and the world's third preferred place to retire, more and more senior adults are moving here every single day. There is a huge gap in the market for retirement homes and senior living projects. I have absolutely no doubt it would be a master stroke for an investor to provide the funds for an all in care/retirement village just like this opportunity with Quinta Fonte do Bispo in Santa Catarina."

The business model: Only the second care home in the Algarve catering for the Expat community, the only one providing an active community centre. Prices will reflect both competitor prices and U.K. prices. Costs start from €1,200 per person, per week (Plus IVA).

Managing Business: We will be working with companies currently providing care at home. They are ready to put a management team into the Quinta and have quoted an allinclusive price to provide care (and to run the entire project). They have total confidence in the need for such a facility, and are very keen to open the facility. The Market: Expats from the UK. There are currently 42,000, an increase of 100% in the last 5 years Expats from America (Exc. Brazil). There are currently 24,000, an increase of over 100% in the last 5 years (Source: www.pordata.pt) The numbers: 32 rooms @ €1200 per week: €1.99m p/a 6 x cottages @ €1400 per week: €436k p/a Total income p/a €2.42m Running costs €1.185m p/a TOTAL PRE TAX PROFIT €1.235m p/a Email: info@eastalgarvemag.com Telephone: 961 700 200

There’s no place like home... Approaching the second anniversary of the opening of their furniture and home decoration store opening in Tavira, we speak to the team at Oliveira about how they have rapidly made a name for themselves amongst home owners in the Algarve.

L

loyd Booker, Co-owner of Oliveira explains their journey to date: “Well firstly I’d like to start with our gratitude for the overwhelming support we continue to receive from the discerning residents of the East Algarve, without them we could not have hoped to have achieved what we have so far. I think there are several reasons for our growth through such difficult times. Obviously the most important factor is that we are doing things differently here at Oliveira. We offer Algarve home owners choice and quality, exceptional service (always going the extra mile) and,

48

despite the modest size of our store, we offer furniture and home decor products for the whole house. In effect, we have made ourselves into a ‘one-stop shop’ for customers looking to furnish and decorate their homes. GOING THE EXTRA MILE We have worked hard to add to the styles and types of products we offer, and our customers can now purchase pretty much anything for their homes, from made-tomeasure curtains, beautiful fabrics and upholstery, a large range of quality seating, lighting, stunning ceramics, furniture renovation, original art and of course quality, stylish furniture for contemporary, traditional and rustic themed homes.

ONE-STOP FURNITURE AND HOME DECOR SHOPPING Recently, we have added a range of stunning outdoor furniture, outdoor curtains, beds, headboards and mattresses and sofa beds to our portfolio. So that just leaves the kitchen sink... but we don’t sell those!!! We love that our customers keep coming back to us and we are thrilled to be helping new residents to the Algarve with our interior design help, where inspiration is required. The future is also very exciting. We are currently formulating our expansion plan which will involve moving to a much bigger new store, able to host our large ranges. Development of our website also continues, meaning our customers can view all of our products from the comfort of their homes.”

INFLATION AND YOUR PENSION

s the cost-of-living crisis continues and inflation soars, some people will be more inclined to take out extra funds from their pension. Even those who are still working may begin taking an income from their pot sooner than they had planned. While this may temporarily cover immediate costs, doing this comes with the potential risk of having much less money in the future. The disadvantages of withdrawing too early A landmark point which caused households to seriously assess how the rising cost of living would impact them was the April 1st increase in the energy price cap. 2015 reforms made it so that savers could easily access their retirement money once they reached the age of 55. This means that people are no longer limited to a lump sum of 25%, but instead they can take as much from their fund as they want. However, this may result in retirees ending up with less money than they had planned. HMRC reports show that a combined £2.69 billion was withdrawn from the personal pension savings of 428,000 people in the final 3 months of 2021. Of course, the purpose of pensions is to ensure that

54

your finances are sufficient to fund your years in retirement. But if you withdraw sums too early, your future may be threatened. Doing so will reduce the amount of money you have when you retire because there will no longer be the opportunity for potential growth. If you have £100,000 in your pot by the age of 55 and you decide to stop paying into it, your funds can still increase by almost £65,000 by the time you are 65. (This is based on 5% annual growth.) However, if you were to take £25,000 out of the pot at 55, it may only increase by £48,000. Tax relief and the Money Purchase Annual Allowance While 25% of the cash lump sum over-55s take out will be tax-free, any funds accessed afterwards will be taxed normally as income for the year. Additionally, if you would like to continue paying into a defined contribution pot, withdrawing money too early may have an impact on the amount you would like to use to top it up. Current rules allow for tax relief on contributions up to £40,000 that you pay into a pension. It is important to note that if you continuously take out lump sums from your pension, this can activate the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA). The MPAA results in a reduction in the amount that can be paid into your pension pot with tax relief to £4,000. Other scenarios, such as taking out an entire pension fund as a lump sum, will also activate the MPAA. Some have argued for the MPAA to be increased, as it would allow for over-55s to get more tax breaks on the pensions they have accessed if they are continuing to contribute more money into the fund. This would put pensions in a good position for when the person eventually retires. Of course, many people have already retired and have planned their retirement around consistently drawing from their pension. However, if you withdraw your money more quickly to grapple with the increases in your daily bills, you will not be able to continue doing this into old age. Therefore, it is important to assess the ways in which you can avoid drawing from your pension pots too early. Inflation and potential solutions Many are calling for the state pension to be increased, but for those who are struggling to afford their energy and grocery bills, waiting

until the next budget is impossible. Pensioners with a low income may be eligible for pension credit. It tops up the pensions of low-income pensioners and can greatly help with regular bills like mortgage interest, council tax, and utility bills. Unfortunately, this benefit is largely underclaimed. So many fail to apply for pension credit because there is a pervasive belief that if you own your own home or have savings, then you don’t qualify for pension credit. This is not true, and it is worth a check to see if you qualify. While pension annuities are another viable solution, fixed-income annuities will be impacted by inflation, and annuities that do account for inflation are not bought by many who need them, as they are too expensive. Additionally, pension schemes that increase annually to account for inflation are sometimes capped at 5%. When inflation is high, however, this 5% is not sufficient, so the pension scheme essentially acts as a fixed liability instead. This is an issue that requires schemes to revise their hedging strategy and ensure it is offering the protection it was intended to provide. Speak to an expert about how to protect yourself against inflation At the beginning of 2022, inflation reached its highest level in decades. Inflationary pressures may persist for a longer period than what is predicted, so it is crucial for pension schemes to plan ahead. Waiting too long for the perfect solution will result in a loss. This means that you must take practical and timely action. It is necessary for you to keep your endgame strategy on course, especially during a time of particularly volatile market conditions. A qualified professional will put a framework in place that promptly addresses these issues. If you have any questions about how you can make the most of your pensions and account for rising inflation, contact Managing Partner John Alden at john.alden@pccwealth.com. Sara de Melo Castanheira is an expert in Occupational Therapy and Quality of Life. She is also the Technical Director of SER Igual, an Association of special rehabilitation services in Tavira

SENSORIAL STIMULATION

S

NOEZELEN (from the Dutch) results from the contraction of SNUFFELEN = to smell, with DOEZELEN = to relax. The concept of SNOEZELEN was defined in the late seventies by two Dutch therapists, Jan Hulsegge and Ad Verheul. A Snoezelen Room is "a room equipped with material for sensorial stimulation. It is a place made of light, sounds, colors, textures and aromas, where objects are coloured and made available to be touched and admired. The primary senses are stimulated giving a sensation of pleasure (Amcip 2009)” Given the high level of dependence of many elderly people and other people with disabilities, or even children with special educational needs, it is necessary to find alternatives and complements to physiotherapy, socio-cultural animation, traditional occupational therapy and other activities, so that they can have a better quality of life. In the case of children, it is necessary to provide environments conducive to the acquisition of skills, freed from curricular requirements. The positive results, revealed by research in the area of sensory stimulation, have contributed to the growing importance of Snoezelen as a complementary treatment to clinicalrehabilitation intervention. Sensory stimulation is used as a promoter of relaxation and leisure, especially for those who are in dementia processes and also, in a preventive and pain relief aspect or as a facilitator of learning or discovery of emotions and reactions. The means used have a strong capacity for stimulation, acting on multiple neocortical circuits, in terms of proprioception, vestibular and kinesthetic systems. Snoezelen is, without a doubt, a fertile field for searches, discoveries and possibilities to promote a better quality of life. Although the Snoezelen therapy was developed as a specific activity for profound intellectual disability, it is not exclusively aimed at this group of people. It extends to a much wider domain. Snoezelen is of particular interest in the field of dementia and psychiatry (Hulsegge, 1989:13). Encouraging results have been achieved with degenerative pathologies of the elderly (Pinkney, 1999),

56

such as: - Alzheimer's Disease; - in people with mental illness; - and even in those with chronic pain; - with hyperactive behaviors; with brain damage and other similar situations. Furthermore, Snoezelen is being highly appreciated by the general population as an antidote to stress. Currently Snoezelen is used daily in the fields of rehabilitation, health, training and occupational therapy. It is also used in schools and treatment facilities for children with disabilities and autism (Mertens, 2005). Snoezelen is a multisensory environment that allows you to stimulate the classic senses such as touch, taste, sight, sound, smell, as well as the proprioceptive sense (awareness of the body and the position it is in) and vestibular (related to the balance). Snoezelen techniques enable sensory stimulation of children and adults with difficulties, disabilities or other limitations. Snoezelen is a specifically equipped environment that conveys to its visitors a pleasant feeling of self-regulation processes. Through a room equipped and used according to the specific needs of each person, the stimulation of therapeutic and pedagogical interventions is achieved, as well as the personal relationships between therapist and patient are strengthened. Snoezelen can be applied with great success in the area of patients, disabled and non-disabled. (German Snoezelen Foundation, 1999). Snoezelen provides multisensory experiences, according to the person's needs, based on their abilities and respecting their time/rhythm. By Snoezelen we mean the selective offering of primary stimuli in a warm environment. (Jan Hulsegge and Ad Verheul, 1989). Snoezelen directs and organises stimuli, creates interest… Snoezelen induces wellbeing. In a calm atmosphere people put aside their fears, they feel safe. Dear reader, do you know that Snoezelen can be used at all stages of human development? The International Snoezelen Association says, yes, and I can't agree more. Here are the most common benefits of the Snoezelen Room: Each Snoezelen participant experiences selfcontrol, discovers autonomy, improves selfesteem and reduces tension and inhibition, allowing for relaxation and recovery, among

other benefits. The Snoezelen sensory room is a safe space, with positive therapeutic and pedagogical effects: • Promotes relaxation, leisure and fun; • Stimulates the primary senses; • Allows exploration, discovery, choice and the opportunity to control the environment; • Increases the user's understanding of likes/ dislikes; • It allows exploring needs as well as preferences; • Allows individual or group work, serving to control anxiety; • Encourages movement and motivation; • Motivation for learning; • Facilitates the release of stress; • Promotes the technical team's awareness of the importance of the primary senses; • It stimulates the emergence of positive emotions such as well-being, relaxation, satisfaction and joy. Snoezelen is a “facilitating”, nurturing, nondirective approach in which an atmosphere of safety is created where freedom of choice is encouraged. Facilitators are expected to share positive emotional experiences common to the user by engaging in activities together. (Louise Haggar and Roger Hutchinson, 1991). We aim to open a Snoezelen room in our community so all can use it independently of each one's condition. Be with us and together we will transform the paradigm of inclusion in the Algarve. Help us create a SNOEZELEN room! How can you help Associação SER Igual? HOW DO YOU FEEL? Farah Naz

A

s you can imagine as a therapist I have asked this question countless times. And interestingly enough, this question is sometimes met with, ´I don’t know what I feel´. It’s not unusual for us to be out of touch with what we feel about something and often it’s because we have repressed, suppressed or are avoiding our feelings. They are banished from our conscious minds, and sent into the unknown depths of the unconscious. In this way, pushing away our emotions is a self-protective measure taken to avoid experiencing difficult emotion and can be either conscious or an unconscious process. Let´s face it, why would we want to face unpleasant emotions? This pushing away, though, can easily become automatic and habitual, and avoidance becomes the default route for many emotions difficult or not. Think of how we avoid ´perceived-difficult´ feelings by focusing on other activities like - binge-watching Netflix, drinking alcohol, drug use, over-working, over-exercising, persistent socializing, online activities, sex, gambling, smoking, eating amongst others. The activities in themselves are not necessarily negative – they are behaviours we sometimes engage in or use, to avoid feeling. The more we seek to disengage with difficult emotion, the more we inadvertently avoid all emotion, having numbed ourselves with the anesthetising effects of avoidance tactics. So, we don’t get happy positive emotions emerging when we push down negative emotion, we just get numb. Evidence shows many of us are emotionally avoidant, biologists say we are hardwired to want to avoid pain and this includes emotional pain. What this means is that emotions such as anger, sadness, negativity, frustration, jealousy and bitter disappointment are often avoided or suppressed. However, our avoidance tactics not only make it difficult to access any positive emotion but research also shows that the more we avoid feeling our emotions the more anxious and depressed we become! Avoiding emotion is like holding a large beach ball underwater. Imagine you and I are walking along a beach and I propose a challenge to you - ´See if you can hold this large beachball underwater for 20 minutes whilst treading water and enjoy the moment´. You think the sun is shining, the water is warm, you´ve got nothing to lose. You accept the challenge.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

´How do you feel? ´ Right now in this moment. There are 2 possible scenarios in this story: First possible outcome: You are treading water happily and pushing the ball under the water, you notice it does take quite a bit of effort to keep this ball of energy down. The warm water feels like a lovely bath and you notice the sensational heat of the sun on your face. Your attention is caught by a majestic bird of prey gliding and drifting, you, then notice from the corner of your eye a dolphin leaping and lolloping in the distance, your attention is caught by the happy squeals of a toddler kicking and splashing water at the shore with utter glee. You are totally enjoying the moment. Next thing you know, you realise the ball is no longer in your hands and its slapped you in your face! Second possible outcome: You notice it takes effort to push the beachball down. You are determined to keep it down there, you use all your strength and focus to keep the ball down. You are making a big effort, and whilst you are doing this, you don´t notice the bird of prey, the dolphin, or the happy kid splashing water. You don’t even notice how warm the water is or the lovely sensation of the sun´s rays on your skin. You get bored as you are disconnected from all around you and you feel tired of this purposeless challenge. Holding the beach ball down is like holding emotions down, or like avoiding emotions. Emotions like the beach ball, are constantly trying to reach the surface. When we suppress, repress or avoid our emotions, they will like the beachball pop up unexpectedly and go in a direction you may not anticipate. Sometimes we can engage like in the first scenario with life around us and everything can seem ok. Life seems to be ticking along nicely and suddenly you may out of the blue, develop an inexplicable illness, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, depression, a phobia or you might behave in a way you hadn’t expected, like have an affair or buy a sports car! This is because emotions demand to be recognised so if they are pushed down they will make themselves known in an unexpected, possibly dangerous, hitting you in your face, way. In the second scenario, when we exert a lot of effort to control, avoid, or suppress emotions, life is without colour, joy or flavour. When we put a lot of effort in to avoid certain negative feelings we end up not feeling anything at all, not even positive ones, as we exert so much energy to push down, to repress, the result

could lead to a depression. If we let the beach ball or our emotions surface and float, the ball or the emotions are just there, not taking extra effort, energy or attention. We notice them and allow them to float away to float near, and we don’t seek to control them or run away from them and most of all we see them as something separate from ourselves. They come and go and do not determine the course of our lives. Alternatively, or additionally we can simply release the beach ball´s valve and gently let the air out, thus keeping the ball intact. Releasing the valve is like talking things out with an intimate, writing a diary, painting a picture, or simply acknowledging your feelings to yourself. We feel relieved when we express our emotions in a calm and safe way. We can suddenly see more clearly and enjoy the colours and flavours of life. In summary, notice what and how you feel, and remember that your judgement or fear of those feelings will make you want to avoid them. Accept your feelings as part of being human without shame or guilt and allow them to just be or express them in a safe, calm way, before they make themselves known in an unhealthy behaviour or mindset. TAKING CONTROL ... YOUR BODY YOUR CHOICE! Expert advice from Elaine Godley founder of the Perfect health HUB a self-help repository with hundreds of health resources, videos, podcasts and weekly group support

T

he NHS has collapsed so how do you keep yourself well? We all know people in the UK who’ve been denied access to medical assessments and even potentially life-saving treatments due to the total collapse of the NHS. I personally know of cases where people have died because no ambulance was available with first responders to provide support following heart attacks. And don’t get me started on cancer treatment being erratic depending upon the postcode. This situation is getting worse by the day. So, what can you do to help yourself? Well, it’s not that difficult a problem if you just take a step back, don’t panic and apply some simple strategies which might literally save your life. Yes, you can work with an award-winning health and wellbeing mentor (that’s me by the way), or you can do your own research and create your own steps to improving your situation. Did you know that type II diabetes can be reversed in 30 days and even stage IV cancer can be beaten in 3 months? One of my natural doctor heroes Dr Rangan Chatterjee showed viewers on a BBC TV programme how to reverse diabetes, and I can show you how to potentially reverse cancer. In 2015 I recovered from stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in a few weeks plus I’ve had three other forms of cancer and beat a rare kidney disease I was born with and told I’d be on medication for life. I’ve become a go-to person helping clients to minimise symptoms and even reverse all manner of serious health conditions - not just cancer. It’s a Question of Mindset The human body will heal itself when it has the right environment to do so. Your job is to give it what it needs, change its environment and be supportive. So how do you do this?

58

Firstly, you make a profound decision. One of the first questions I ask my potential mentees during our exploration conversation to see if we are a good fit, is ‘do you want to enjoy better health’? This is an important acknowledgement because not everyone wants to recover, believe it or not. For some people, taking the ‘victim’ path is their chosen route to living. They enjoy the limelight of being centre of attention. For others, like a lady I knew who was being bullied by her husband who had become violent as he was losing his mind, it was her get out of jail card and she couldn’t die quick enough. Some people can’t cope with any more pain and experimental medical treatment and they simply give up. Having a strong mindset to recover, is therefore a great starting point. A Positive Outlook So, you decide, then what? Here’s where the work starts, this is where people falter on their own and often seek my help. Poor health doesn’t just happen overnight. Until we experience symptoms that cause us pain, most of us put our head in the sand (and there’s plenty of it here in The Algarve), ignore the niggles and soldier on as matters get progressively worse. Consider this ….is your golf swing still as strong as it was 20 years ago? Do you struggle to walk around the course and now use a buggy instead? Your body doesn’t need to age and be in pain. The niggles are signs that something is wrong, so please listen to your body and take preventative action so the deterioration can be reversed. Remember the old saying – ‘a stitch in time is better than nine’, as my Nan often used to tell me. It’s much easier to prevent illness than to recover from illness. We are human, we make excuses, we don’t like bothering people, we doubt ourselves, perhaps we are imagining symptoms? Whatever the cause of not taking action,

remember that the buck stops with you. Noone can begin to fix you unless you start to fix yourself. Healing comes from within the mind and the body – the connection is huge and undeniable. Where the mind goes, the body follows! A positive mindset is essential because there are many obstacles to derail your recovery. Some years ago, I was a telephone helpline volunteer for people newly diagnosed with cancer. During my time speaking with hundreds of callers, I noticed patterns which were challenging the ability to heal. I formulated a 10-point assessment document to identify where the individual may require the most significant effort to begin healing. The areas are mind, body, work, home, values, beliefs, attitude, behaviour, friends, and family. To fully heal from a serious condition, your body needs a great deal of support from many quarters - I’ve not even mentioned the dietary and lifestyle changes required which are essential and key to recovery. Your body became poorly through a series of events over many years. You might not be able to heal as quickly as I did but at least you know you have a fighting chance with the right support. By the time you read this article I will have received a new quantum frequency healing device to play with at Godley Towers. Most days I use my Powertube healing device which formed part of my strategy to beat stage IV cancer. Using state -of-the-art technology the new handheld device is helping thousands all over the world to heal their body. Alongside lifestyle and dietary changes, this device promises to make healing even easier. Watch this space!

SUMMER SKIN CARE TIPS It´s that time of the year when it´s too easy to forget to take special care of your skin in the extreme conditions the Algarve presents. Here are some tips to remember

G

o lighter on your skin. Heat and humidity mean that often we need a lighter moisturiser than in winter. Try a moisturiser that has hyaluronic acid in it. Hyaluronic acid has a lighter texture, yet still provides and protects your skin from drying out. Sunscreen is essential and a must. Even on cloudy and overcast days. The days are long, the sun is intense and it is important to protect your tender skin from harsh UV rays that create wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging. Spf 30 is the minimum that should be used and make sure to reapply regularly. Less is better in the heat. Swap your foundation for a tinted moisturizer or tinted sunscreen and a dab of concealer. Think about switching to a waterproof mascara, apply a single quick layer. Make sure to read the labels and use only non-comedogenic products. They are formulated without poreclogging ingredients, which will save your skin from breakouts and allows it to breathe. Cleanse your skin Sweat, sunscreen, chlorine from swimming pools and salt water and sand from the beach, all are good reasons to take extra care of your skin when cleansing before bed. Wash your face right up into your hairline, this area and the outer edges of your face is prone to breakouts. Look for a cleanser with salicylic acid to unblock pores and kill off bacteria. Taking care of the surface is one thing, but make sure to hydrate from the inside too. Drink plenty of water, aim for 8-10 glasses of water a day, to keep your skin flawless and your organs healthy and happy. Eating summer fruits, high in vitamins and water content will give your skin and immune system a boost.

mosquitos

Ahh, mosquitoes, they must serve a purpose to the eco system, but to most they are a pain. Try our guide to repelling pesky mosquitoes without the use of chemical and by using plants.

M

osquitoes can carry disease and leave you with itchy, red bumps where they bite you. Here’s how to fight back. Do mosquito repellent plants work? Mosquitoes are fickle, they are not fans of the scents or oils produced by certain plants. Some plants (like basil) are even toxic to mosquitoes or their larvae. Pro tip: You likely need to cut, crush, chop or give your plants a good rub with your hands for most of these plants to release the oils and scents that make up their mosquito-repelling powers.

CITRONELLA GRASS

This is one of the most common ingredients in many insect-repellents. Mosquitoes hate its lemony fresh scent. It is low maintenance and an easy plant to grow. It can be grown outside in frost-free areas, it also does well indoors as a potted plant.

CATNIP

Catnip drives your cat wild and will drive mosquitoes away. Researchers at Iowa State University found that catnip is 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET! Catnip is easy to grow and maintain, but it does spread. Best way to contain it is to grow your catnip in pots. Catnip also makes for a delightful tea.

LAVENDER

Lavender is a great way to add a little calm to your day. However, Lavender contains the terpene alcohol linalool and mosquitoes and other insects hate it. Lavender can be grown both indoors and outdoors. It’s most effective when you crushed and applied to your skin.

Sage does more than clear out that bad energy, it clears out mosquitoes too. Sage contains caryophyllene, a common terpene which helps keep bugs away. Sage works best when you burn it.

MINT

Mint is an effective repellent, especially the peppermint variety. One study found that applying peppermint plant essential oil to your skin offers protection from bug bites for over 2 hours! Peppermint is easy to grow indoors or outside in pots. Add a hint of mint to your fave tea!

ROSEMARY

Rosemary is an effective way to keep pests away and a good way to add flavour to your food. This herb contains rosmarinic acid, a natural mosquito repellent. Like sage, it’s most effective at repelling pests when you burn it, add a little to your bonfire or bbq.

BASIL

Basil is a gorgeous herb, mouthwatering, and perfect with tomatoes and summer dishes and mosquitoes aren’t a fan. Basil doesn’t need to be crushed or chopped to do it’s mosquitorepelling duties. Studies show that compounds in basil are toxic to mosquito larvae.

WOODEN ART

I

Written by Maggie Rowlands

n October 2020 a lockdown idea was conceived by Peter and Valerie Else in Tavira. It was based on an old plan they had of a small Victorian rocking horse. However, when work began it was discovered the plans were incomplete, lacking technical advice and instructions for the painting, rocking mechanisms and the construction of the blanket, tail, mane, saddle, bridle, reins and bit. Research on the internet ensued during the first week of November along with the construction which was hindered somewhat by the shops being closed. Hence the woodworking skills of Peter and the artistic skills of Valerie enabled work to be started using remnants of materials left over from other projects. The months passed and eventually Peter’s

woodworking skills came to fruition with the construction of the horse itself completed. Then came the task of making the metal rockers and stirrups using left over metal rods from previous constructions. Valerie’s artistic flair came to the fore with the making of the saddle, reins, blanket, bridle and bit along with the mane and tail. The last section of the project was to transform the plain wooden horse into a dapple grey. The first paint was applied in January 2021 and by July that year the transformation was completed admirably by Valerie, the horse with a beautiful blonde mane and tail was saddled and reined ready for riding. From the start the idea behind this amazing piece of craftmanship was to raise some funds for a children’s charity on the Algarve. Lynn Clark-Wright, a member of the Hangover Unicorn Golf Society of which Peter Else is

also a member, decided to make a substantial donation for the horse with the intention of it going to an orphanage. It was then given to Tavira 2nd Chance, along with the monetary donation, to find a suitable place for it to go. It was recently delivered to the orphanage Refugio Aboim Ascensao in Faro along with the money where it was greatly appreciated and left with the children to name him and enjoy. We would like to say a special thank you to Peter, Valerie and Lynn and would also like to say we are so grateful for the loving and generous support and donations our charity, Tavira 2nd Chance receives. In these difficult times it is even more important to help as much as we can. All funds raised are in turn used to support our local community.
