Sixteen members of rotary club estoi Palace international were honoured to receive their Paul harris Fellow awards from district Governor José coelho and assistant district Governor silvério Guerreiro at the club meeting on 15 november 2011. Following the presentation José coelho addressed the members, complimenting them and praising the club for its activities and high achievements, thereby setting an example to others. Paul harris Fellows are individuals recognised by rotary for their outstanding contribution to the organisation and its objectives locally and internationally. each new Paul harris Fellow receives a commemorative certificate and a Paul harris Fellow badge. Paul harris was one of the Founders of rotary, that grew from a single club in chicago in 1905 into the global organisation of more than 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide that we know today. the Paul harris award was set up in 1957 in memory of the founders’ work to recognise outstanding contributions to the ideals of rotary and is the most important honour awarded by the organisation. club President bill mahoney said he was very proud to be involved with a club which continues to make such an important contribution for the benefit of society, from help in the local community to its donations to the rotary campaign for the eradication of Polio worldwide. Our members have joined a select group who have been given this award.

Adrian langley, whose parents live near santo estêvão, has recently retired from the hampshire Fire service after 25 years. so it was only right that iris & mike langley were on hand to present twenty sets of heavy duty fire protection clothing to the tavira firefighters at their headquarters in rua de bombeiros. Jamie Palma said, “We are extremely grateful to adrian for organising the donation of these suits which of top quality and will replace some of our old suits”. britannia leatherbarrows removals of bournemouth, in conjunction with local algarve removal company neil & emily richardson removals, readily agreed to co-ordinate the collection & delivery of the consignment free-of-charge. natiVity SCene (Presépio) the tavira bombeiros mount one of the algarve's best nativity scenes with hundreds of small figures, working models & running water depicting scenes from the bible. not to be missed, this free display is on show until 6th January at the bombeiros hQ near the bus station.

After months of 'will they - won't they' the tolls on the a22 will commence on the 8th december. President aníbal cavaco silva, announced his approval of the legislation that will enable tolls to operate on the via do infante. tthe commission for road users in the algarve was very disappointed and promised to come up with an injunction to stop the tolls on the a22. the leader of the ‘antis’, João vasconcelos said the approval of the law "only shows that the President of the republic did not listen to the concerns of the population.” For a limited period of time, legally registered residents will be exempt from charges for the first 10 transactions per month, after which there will be a 15% reduction in fees for each transaction. motorists are urged to keep their residency status updated in order to apply for these discounts, which will not apply to tourists or part-time foreign residents. these exemptions and discounts will come to an end on 1 July 2012.

Physiological Factors Your eyes make up the visual system, one important aspect of equilibrium. they see obstacles and send information to the brain about distances and speed. but sometimes your vision might be blocked or compromised. this can affect balance. so your somatosensory system helps. this is your sense of touch through skin and muscles and proprioception (position in space, posture and more). a hand on top of a table can prevent a fall. but your sense of touch doesn't do it all either. Your inner ears have fluid that regulates head position and movement. this is part of the vestibular system. all three systems control equilibrium and Otherbalance.Factors temporary and chronic conditions can also affect equilibrium. it is hard to walk if your pelvis is misaligned. a sinus infection might affect inner-ear fluid and cause dizziness. repetitive headaches or migraines can affect your vision. You might not be able to stand upright if your posture is poor. stress and anxiety can throw off equilibrium. if you have vision problems, balance can be difficult. musculoskeletal alignment balance within muscle groups and alignment of the skeletal system affect body equilibrium and balance. small shifts of bones can affect the whole skeletal system. When the bite of the jaw is off or one leg is longer than the other, the entire spine compensates for the misalignment. Opposing muscle groups stabilize the joints of the body through the

Many factors can affect your sense of balance. the body tries to stay upright when walking and keep the head level when sitting. this has to do with maintaining a centre of gravity. Feeling dizzy or wobbly is unsettling. Yet you might not ever think about how the body stays balanced most of the time. it takes a lot of physiological processes to do so. understanding equilibrium to maintain equilibrium, the body must balance forces applied to it, the definition of equilibrium is that all forces are equal. certain physiological systems are involved to maintain this state. Your eyes, hands, skin, feet and ears provide information to the brain.

Often the head is held ‘cocked’ to one side although the person is unaware, clearly this holding pattern will lead to strain on one side of the body, thus causing further pain issues. improving balance You need to practice balance to maintain it. as you age, balance might be less natural. there are exercises, such as standing on one leg and standing on tiptoes that can improve balance. exercise classes in yoga, Pilates and core stability will promote strong balance and posture. be aware of what factors might compromise your balance, and know when to seek help for issues such as vertigo. ‘the bowen technique’ improves your balance: this very gentle and effective technique aims to return the body to its natural balance, relieving pain and stresses in the body. it works on pressure points all around the body encouraging the skeletal system back into the correct position because once you become off balance your health starts to deteriorate. if you can relate to any of the problems discussed in this article, especially pelvic misalignment, jaw misalignment, sinus issues and stress, then you really should try ‘the bowen technique’ to get your body back into equilibrium. start the year with both feet heading forward and maintain your body’s equilibrium, allowing your good health and wellbeing to follow. Global Postural reeducation is a innovative method of posture correction developed by the French physiotherapist Philippe e souchard, and has been practiced for over 30 years by qualified doctors and physiotherapists. rPG is a gentle, progressive and active method, which can be effective to patients of any age, respecting each person’s capabilities. it is not only for people with postural ailments, (back related pain), but is also for any musculoskeletal disorder. (bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and tnerves)histreatment is available in Fuseta, with duarte arrais and his team and and can help with an array of ailments including scoliosis (curved spine) hyperlordosis (lower arched back) back pain, sciatica, disc problems, arthritis to name but literally a few. it is also preventive method for sports people whether recovering, after injury or in training. during the first appointment, a plan of treatment is devised and the patient will go through an evaluation of all their symptoms, considering muscular retraction and posture evaluation. Physiotherapy, and a series of specific stretching positions, tries to reposition the body with gradual tension. these progressive streching positions are performed by the patient in an active way, guided and corrected by the therapist at all times. at no time are any abrupt or unexpected moves used. the therapist keeps communicating with the patient constantly during the whole session these postures are applied slowly, delicately and progressively whilst always insisting on proper breathing.. it helps to regain strength, length and flexibility, to the muscles responsible for the problem. GPr prevents long term articular (joint) deterioration, eliminating pain and its symptoms.. GPr is for everyone with any musculoskeletal problem.

George achieved this look for carmel by working on the base colour, “which was in good condition but had just become flat” George explained. he applied a soft golden blonde base colour to the roots, took this through the whole head and combined foils through the top with light exposure, low volume peroxide. this along with a golden blonde lowlights (again with low volume peroxide) created the soft, natural and fresh colour, after 30 minutes development time. during consultation carmel said she had wanted to “keep the length”. George washed carmel’s hair from the head Funk styling range and after blow drying and straightening, he “dry cut”, using texturising scissors to achieve the chopped into look, which can now be worn formally, or in a more fun, 'messier' style. the whole treatment would normally cost between 40€ and 50€, which includes a relaxing head massage. carmel was clearly delighted with her stunning new look. many thanks to George for bringing us another fantastic makeover, and congratulations to carmel. iterally minutes away from the a22, Jag’s has amazing views of the 18th green, the beautiful surrounding countryside, the Guadiana river and Portugal beyond. there is a glorious, large roof terrace, first floor terrace bar overlooking the delightful pool area to one side and the costa esuri golf course to the other. Jag’s boasts a chic restaurant on the ground floor and a great sports and social bar with 3 plasma screens and sky sports. Jag and Pam kindly took time to show us around and explained how they have transformed what was an empty shell into their now, stylish Jag,bistro.born in Punjab, india grew up in huddersfield, Yorkshire and had worked there in retail business for many years. Pam was living in abertillery, Wales when they married 18 years ago in a traditional arranged ceremony, they have 2 children, harry and rhian. in 2002, they were looking for a possible plot of land to build a holiday home abroad. they liked ayamonte very much and decided that they could possibly settle and made the decision to stay for a year to have a test of the true lifestyle. during this time they looked at opening a “subway” franchise, in the shopping centre, this didn’t get off the ground due to legal and complicated ruling reasons but unperturbed, in June 2008 they went on to buy “Puerta nueva”, a spanish tapas restaurant in ayamonte. after enjoying tremendous success they introduced a traditional indian menu and incorporated mediterranean dishes. this proved very popular with their customers. they then changed the name to Jag’s bistro as people who had been recommended would come in and ask if it was Jag’s place. due to their continued success, they had now outgrown the restaurant, one day whilst chatting with a customer and friend it was suggested they take a look at what was the empty club house, which was potentially going to be used for exclusive villas on the costa esuri development. On three floors, the roof terrace is a great place to enjoy the stunning views and has hosted weddings and many special occasions. this leads down to the 1st floor terrace with its welcoming bar, where you can dine under a parasol again you can enjoy the views from here or maybe just enjoy a drink or two. On the ground floor is the elegant indoor restaurant, which opened in november 2010 and sports, social bar in January this year. regular fun events are held here, such as the thursday quiz night which is amazing value at €10 which includes quiz entry, drink and bar meal (Fish & chips, chicken curry or homemade Pies). this together with live music nights, cabaret shows and themed dining evenings are great fun for all and very Jag’spopular.opened the costa esuri bistro in July 2010 and owes its success to its reputation for fabulous “food cooked with passion”, its unique location and the support from their clients, who helped with a membership scheme to enable them to carry out the interior

T his month we met up with the people behind the recently created the hairy lemon Golf society based in cabanas, tavira. they explained how the idea came about and the exciting plans for the future. ryan and his father steve from tavira auction Warehouse, Wendy and mick from haven OPs, and eddie from the hairy lemon pub (yes that is the name, you read it right) in conceição, are all friends who literally came up with the idea one evening over a few drinks. they explained that although they enjoyed playing golf regularly, because they all run their own businesses they couldn’t really justify becoming a member of a club, as they were limited, especially during the summer months in having the time to play. the idea was that rather than play alone when they managed to find themselves free, they could start a society which would encourage them to play more regularly, and offer the opportunity for others in similar circumstances to do the same. the benefit of being a society means that golf clubs can offer special rates due to the larger number of people

playing. having started very recently they are proud to say that they already have 20 members, and numbers are growing all the time. their first tournament took place at the begining of november and was a great success. they played at both benamor and monte rei Golf clubs, after arranging a special price for both days thanks to the success of the membership scheme and the numbers involved. ryan and eddie filled us in on the day. they all met at the hairy lemon, enjoyed breakfast at the course, followed by 18 holes, including the hire of the golf buggies, returning to the hairy lemon for dinner and a few drinks. the next day headed off to monte rei, again had breakfast before teeing off, played competitively through the day, and after returning to the club house, had their score cards counted. everyone was then given the chance to go home and freshen up, to then meet later for a presentation evening and prize giving ceremony with snacks and music at the hairy lemon, great fun at the end of the day. Prizes have included a professional golf lesson, lunch for 2 people

15www.eastalgarvemag.com People as well as a prize from beauty salon “cara’s, where the winner enjoyed a hair cut from top stylist tanya. the society play for fun, but competitively and fairly. they have dave shepherd as their resident professional and handicap secretary. the handicaps are updated by dave, and legitimised by the Portuguese Federation of Golf to ensure fair and fun competition. the society plays every sunday and plan to have competitions every two months, as well as arranging trips away. they all agree that it is a great way to socialise and, relax, but it has also proved to be a great way for business networking. through the society ryan, steve, eddie and Wendy have already made many mutual business contacts. so far the hairy lemon Golf society has proved to be a lot of fun, and hopes to welcome more members in the near future to take advantage of their discounted rates. the more members they have, the better deals they can acheive with local courses... everyone wins! best of all, membership is only a nominal fee to cover administration! it was great to meet them we hope you get a chance to enjoy the fun. Focus on River our focus this month found us on the Guadiana river between the border of Portugal and spain. it is a very relaxing way to see the eastern end of the algarve (and the Western end of spain) along the Guadiana which passes through some beautiful countryside, changing from very flat scenery around vila real de sto antonio, to a backdrop of rounded hills with lush vegetation, a few houses here and there, and castles on hilltops on both of the river banks. the river separates Portugal from spain, and extends from the Western portion of spain to the southern provinces of the algarve. its tributaries flow from east to west, then south to the border towns of vila real de san antonio, in Portugal and ayamonte, in spain. From here it flows into the Gulf of cadiz, with a course that covers a distance of 829km, and is the 4th longest in the iberian Peninsula. We were delighted to be invited to join the scenic riosul boat cruise, sailing from vila real, travelling along the beautiful, tranquil river which is as flat and still as a pond. We watched fish jump, saw birds of prey, and soaked up the stunning, peaceful scenery. the river is steeped in history. the romans referred to it as the anas, meaning of/or pertaining to ducks (quack quack). during the moorish occupation and settlement, the name was shortened and referred to as ana (being the arab term for river)

later passed on to the Portuguese and spanish settlers as the Ouadiana and later just Odiana. since the 16th century, due to castilian influences the name has slowly evolved and is now the Guadiana. the crew will make you very welcome, quoting some interesting and amusing facts along the way. You can enjoy a drink on board from the bar and of course make sure you get those important pictures taken. We anchored at the timeless village of Foz de Odeleite, where you can swim in the panoramic pool which has superb views from the terrace. this was followed by a delicious traditional algarvian lunch served in the “Quinta do rio” restaurant. during lunch, live music is performed by the staff, making the experience great fun. they encourage everyone to join in. most of us have used the bridge to get to spain, saving around 4 hours waiting for the ferry before it was constructed. the views from the river are truly amazing. We hope you get the chance to take friends or family on this wonderful day trip; many thanks to all the staff of the riOsul. We would highly recommend the trip to everyone; a real must. You can contact them on their website www.riosultravel.com or call 281 510 200 for sailing dates, and possibly combine the day with one of their “Jeep safaris”. many thanks once again for a very memorable day.

18 i ncreasing worries over a systemic crisis in the eurozone have sent sovereign debt yields to dangerous levels in italy and spain. the contagion is now also spreading to France and belgium. disagreement between France and Germany on how to deal with europe’s sovereign debt crisis is putting increased pressure on the single currency. due to endless political dithering there is a deep mistrust in financial markets that a solution to save the euro will be found in a timely manner. One wonders how much longer will it take until debt do us part. unfortunately you can not short the Portuguese euro nor can you buy a put option to hedge your risk, in case you are worried about Portugal leaving the euro. however, as a home owner or prospective homeowner you can create your own synthetic put option on the Portuguese euro at relatively little cost without being a math magician. using the word option suggests there is an expiration date, but the strategy described below is in principle open ended. in case the euro would fall apart, it will be within the next 24 months or otherwise a solution to the crisis will have been found for the euro to continue. if you want to purchase a property in Portugal or already own one, consider taking out a mortgage. although at the moment banks are REAL ESTATE LIVE, INVEST AND ESCAPE GOLF PROPERTIES VILLAS APARTMENTS TOWNHOUSES LHV-927PLOTS Covering the whole of the Algarve as independant real estate agents, we can provide you with unbiased advice when you decide to purchase a property and can introduce you to a wide choice of reputable mortgage banks, architects, lawyers, builders, chartered surveyors and interior designers. 19www.eastalgarvemag.com not eager to lend money, you should still be able to finance 50%. the amount the bank is willing to lend to you, you keep on a saving account in your home country. Your home country must be financially stable, such as Germany, the netherlands, switzerland or england to name a few. at the moment banks are offering around 3% on some saving accounts. the interest paid on your mortgage can vary between 3.25 to 4%. if you subtract the interest paid from the interest received, you end up paying approx. 1% (this does not take into consideration tax on interest). even if the total cost of this structure would be 2% per annum, it is relatively inexpensive versus normal exchange listed options. as mentioned before, there is no equivalent you can buy on a stock exchange, but if you could buy one you can rest assured to pay a much higher premium due to high volatility. in case Portugal needs to leave the euro or the eurozone breaks up, it is likely for the new escudo to have less purchasing power. in other words, the new escudo would be devalued. most mediterranean countries need a weaker currency to increase competitiveness and a devaluation of 30-35% would just do that. if Portugal leaves the euro, both savings and debt will be nominated in the new (devalued) currency. in this scenario your mortgage would be in the new currency too. if this was to happen – and this is far from certain – you would then use part of the money on your saving account to repay your mortgage in full. there is a small penalty for early redemption of 2 to 3% - but you benefit from the devaluation. in case of a 35% devaluation, you potential gain could be somewhere between 28 to 32% depending on the interest differential and the time lapsed between the initiation of the mortgage and moment of devaluation.

For me, the second book i read of his (which happened to be the da vinci code) was a lot less thrilling than the first since i could predict some of the twists. if you have already read the da vinci code, be warned that you might not like angels and demons as much as i did. “langdon was not prepared for what happened next. as victoria blew, the wounds on either side of the man’s midsection hissed and sprayed blood into the air like blowholes on a whale. the salty liquid hit langdon in the face” dan brown is a phenomenal writing as he puts details and pictures in your head. in the quote above is just a small sample of the language throughout the novel angels & demons. robert langdon, a young, symbol specialist is called to rome by cern after the death of their beloved leonardo vetra. leonardo vetra is a brilliant man that worked with his daughter, victoria vetra, to

Booklovers'corner by Dan Brown. From the bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code comes the explosive thriller that started it all.

25 make a life changing experiment. anti-matter. the anti-matter is a powerful thing that fuses the theory of science being the proof of god in the world yet a deadly weapon in the wrong hands. now with the stage set of the illuminati having taken four cardinals and hidden the anti-matter somewhere in rome, robert is now on a hunt all across rome with victoria searching for the illuminati church which everyone has thought to be dead for years and years. the illuminati intend and are forcefully trying to destroy the vatican city. this adventure is nothing shy of dangerous with an animalistic hassassin craving for prey like a carnivore that will nothing stop in his way. robert is trying to uncover the hidden secrets of the vatican and the illuminati, who that are known for keeping secrets locked tight away behind their lips, vaults, and walls. With the help of victoria and a few others around robert is trying to save the four Prefertiti cardinals before the hassassin kills the four cardinals and the anti-matter bomb levels all of rome. i would suggest angles & demons for anyone that enjoys a good action packed book with hints of comic relief. dan brown has such a captivating way of writing that you can hardly put down the book. even with all the history packed within its pages and sub plots the story is an easy follow. You as a reader get to connect and see things from different points of views with each character that speaks, walks, and talks making everyone different. the adventures of robert langdon do not just stop at angels and demons, dan brown has his in the sequel to angles and demons known as the da vinci code and in another book called the lost symbol. With the rather graphic details and content of the book i would suggest it for any school and adult that likes nothing more than a good book. dan brown has really out done himself with angles & demons.

B elieve it or not, in times past there were things more valuable than gold, silver, and even diamonds. they were the items people coveted, and those who could afford them really wanted -- they were spices and herbs. in the days before refrigeration and modern cookery, food was pretty bland without spices and herbs. there are many spices and herbs that are generally associated with the christmas period that we've all heard of, but others many may not know much about. so, let's explore some of the more popular christmas time herbs. in traditional christmas stories and songs, especially those revolving around the birth of christ, you hear a lot about frankincense and myrrh. how many of us can raise their hand and actually say what they were? even better, how many of us can say where they came from? Well, frankincense and myrrh are both dried tree sap resins, meaning that they come from trees whose common names are frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense is genus and myrrh is commiphora. they were considered so valuable that they were taxed at each place they passed through. the clearer and

CinnamOn the spice, cinnamon comes for the bark of a tree and it is probably one of the oldest known spices used by man, since it is known to date back to 4000 b c as a medical herb, it is used with digestion and the spice is antiseptic. it is now thought to lower blood pressure. ClOVe look at the head of a nail, and you'll see the reason why the name of this herb evolved. the word clove comes from the latin word clavus, meaning nail. the shaft and head of the clove bud looks like a nail. in the 16th and 17th centuries, cloves were one of the most precious spices of europe and they were worth more than gold. the primary uses of cloves in herbal medicine are to relieve nausea and vomiting. it is also used to treat flatulence. before the invention of novocain in dentistry, cloves were given for tooth aches. Fennel Fennel, the perennial variety with the yellow flowers, has majestic feathery leaves. it originates from the mediterranean, but can be found growing throughout much of the world. it is very pungent, fragrant, and has a wide variety of uses. it is an invasive species in both the u.s. and australia. Fennel seeds are ancient medicinal remedies, when it comes to digestion and hunger. starving Puritans would chew on them during religious fasting to keep from growing hungry. some cultures chew on them to relieve the feeling of being over-fed. ancient romans chewed on the stalks because they believed it would keep them from becoming fat. gingeR Ginger is a favourite medicinal herb and spice used not only for cooking -but to aid digestion and treat stomach upsets, diarrhoea, and nausea for thousands of years. thanks to popular children's literature, christmas wouldn't be christmas without ginger, gingerbread biscuits, and gingerbread houses. laVenDeR Just about everybody loves the scent of lavender. it's said that it must have been present with adam and eve in the Garden of eden.

in medieval times, lavender was considered a holy safeguard against evil. the myth was in many christian homes, which a cross of lavender hung over any door, what protection from evil. mint mint, which is actually minthe -- is a sweet scented herb that contains menthol, which is what gives it the unique quality of being a known aid to digestion. crushed mint leaves are one of life's treasures to smell. mint’s true name is mentha. this hearty aromatic perennial is probably one of the most easily recognized herbs, just for its aroma. it grows best in wet area and can be considered to be invasive. miStletOe mention mistletoe and it brings smiles and warm memories of being caught under the mistletoe for a stolen kiss. the tradition of hanging sprigs of this herb as an emblem of love and good fortune goes way back before 200 b c it's not known exactly why or when the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe started, but it is generally accepted that it was in the 16th century, possibly in england.

Mark O’Shaughness y christmas legends, rosemary has a special place. the flowers of rosemary were supposed to white, but it's said ary laid her blue cloak upon the branches of a rosemary bush, the according to folklore, rosemary was said to bring happiness for anyone who smelled it on christmas eve. Sage sage is a common meat rub herb that started its herbal career, as a healing herb that was thought to have cured everything from snake bits, eye problems, infections, epilepsy, intoxication, memory loss, worms, and intestinal problems. the truth is that it is a good food preservative. thyme today, aside from being a common herb for roasting meat, it is also used in dried flower arrangements, bouquets, and potpourri. many people would identify thyme as a kitchen herb used in roasting, especially with holiday meals. nUtmeg nutmeg may not look the most interesting of spices but it has been used for everything from embalming ancient egyptians; a treatment for piles in the middle ages to being a well-known alternative to marijuana. natives of the banda islands, indonesia rub nutmeg oil on the stomach as a treatment to flu and also rub it onto the forehead to treat headaches. it would seem the reason so many of these herbs and spices appear in the foods we eat at christmas is due to the fact they are all associated with treating colds and flu.

Photosyn thesis follows the reaction 6cO2 + 6h2O ↔ c6h12O6 + 6O2 carbon is transferred within the bio sphere as heterotrophs feed on other organisms or their parts (e.g., fruits). this includes the uptake of dead or ganic material (detritus) by fungi and bacteria for fermentation or decay. most carbon leaves the biosphere through respiration. When oxygen is present, aerobic respiration occurs, which releases carbon dioxide into the surrounding air or water, follow ing the reaction c6h12O6 + 6O2 ↔ 6cO2 + 6h2O. Otherwise, anaero bic respiration occurs and releases methane into the surrounding envi ronment, which eventually makes its way into the atmosphere or hydro sphere (e.g., as marsh gas or flatu blence).urning of biomass (e.g. forest fires, wood used for heating, anything else organic) can also transfer substan tial amounts of carbon to the atmo cspherearbon may also be circulated with in the biosphere when dead organic matter (such as peat) becomes in corporated in the geosphere. ani mal shells of calcium carbonate, in particular, may eventually become limestone through the process of msedimentation.uchremains to be learned about the cycling of carbon in the deep ocean. For example, a recent dis covery is that larvacean mucus houses (commonly known as "sink ers") are created in such large num bers that they can deliver as much carbon to the deep ocean as has been previously detected by sedi ment traps.[6] because of their size and composition, these houses are rarely collected in such traps, so most biogeochemical analyses have erroneously ignored them. carbon storage in the biosphere is influenced by a number of process es on different time-scales: while net primary productivity follows a diur nal and seasonal cycle, carbon can be stored up to several hundreds of years in trees and up to thousands of years in soils. changes in those long term carbon pools (e.g. through de- or afforestation or through tem perature-related changes in soil res piration) may thus affect global cli mate change. Local sports news from Chris Wright. olhanense travelled north to Paços de Ferreira for their first league game since the magnificent 0-0 draw with champions Fc Porto. manager daúto Faquirá had little room to manoeuvre as his injury list lengthens with nuno Piloto, ismailly and Fernando alexandre all absent along with the suspended dady. veteran striker djalmir made a rare start. in a poor first -half the 1500 spectators may well have wondered why they bothered turning up on a cold november night. after the break, the visitors looked the more lively and Wilson eduardo tested the keeper before djalmir was played through but his rasping shot was well saved by cassio. midway through the half João Gonçlaves clumsy challenge on melgarejo resulted in a penalty and michel calmly stepped up to send Fabiano Freitas the wrong way, the first goal he had conceded since the game against benfica, way back in October. Fabiano is currently rated the top keeper in Portugal and scouts from France & Germany are closely watching his progress. six minutes later and Olhanense were level. salvador agra’s quickly taken corner was flicked on by djalmir. cassio’s save fell at the feet of andré Pinto who rammed the ball home from six metres. this 1-1 draw keeps Olhanense in sixth place but it was the end for the P.Ferreira manager luis miguel who was sacked after the game. laSt Sixteen Olhanense are away to estoril in the 5th round of the Portugal (Fa) cup tomorrow (saturday) kick-off 8.15pm. a few places (20euros return) remain on the coach which will be leaving Olhão at 2.00pm. How quickly the years fly

60 plus is not perhaps considered a great age but i think i have accumulated, in that time, some information which i can pass on to interest and entertain golfers everywhere. in all of my east algarve articles i have tried to cover all the golf game, not the styles of the great golfers. i have seen in my lifetime, others better qualified than myself set about this task regularly, but i have tried to hit the varies nails right on the head, as they have come before me. have a very merry christmas and good golfing in 2012. happy new Year to you all and maybe you will see me on the fairways more in the future. Keith ashdown Benamor Head ProfessionalPga

An end of year message from Benamor's resident professional, Keith Ashdown

How quickly the years fly! i look forward annually to the warmth of spring and summer and that clean smell of mown fairways. then before i can say i have enjoyed them to the full, here i am, looking forward to the next spring and summer and in my excitement i forget i am steadily running out of time. things are so arranged in this world by our creator that whatever happens we all run out of time finally. i have now gone 60, which i suppose one day will be sort of a half way mark in human life, but today it means that more than the best half has already gone, one could say “the future is behind one?”. anyway i feel like doing some summing up. When one is young, one seeks all the honours one can get and there always seems to be time to obtain them, and then all of a sudden how grateful one becomes for what one has got – never mind what one imissed.decided 8 years ago to stop playing in major golf tournaments to rest on my laurels. although past 60 i know i can still play within a stroke or two as well as i did thirty years ago, enough to be considered a competitor, not a passenger merely crowding the field. i could still get a big kick from playing against the younger golfers. at the same time i could test out some theories i had worked on since i was very young – namely that my action was one which would not only last all my life, but would produce satisfactory results when one-time rivals had dropped back on the golfing ladder. i decided years ago that easy golf was a game of hands and arms, and that no trouble should be spared to build up the hands and arms, so that the club could be swung fast and truly. i felt then, as i still do today, that many of the great champions are apt to overlook the fact that they have excessively strong hands, a grip like a vice in fact, and so they unconsciously mislead others when giving advice. they put the accent on the other parts of the body, simply because their hands have never been a problem to them. all i can say is that if you give mr Jim smith, ben hogan’s or my own hands, he will be almost scratch the next day, even using his own special sort of swing. in fact, i will go even further and say that his special sort of swing, which he and his teachers claim lets him down is only so condemned because he tries somehow to cover up the weakness of his hands and fingers and make do with the muscles he has, which are non-golfing ones.
