...to your February issue. I hope you haven’t had too many leaks, or mysterious black patches appearing on your ceilings, with the amount of rain we’ve had. In Portugal I vowed not to moan about the weather, but with three young boys, you can imagine the washing scenario. This month we focus on the uplifting carnival spirit, which promises to be bigger than ever. I’m already planning my son’s clown outfit and can’t wait to be a proud mum at the childrens parade. We’ve also met a lot of interesting people, including local mosaic artist Petra Karflack, and Martin, who has changed his career from mechanic to fine artist. Making my month, I had the chance to sample a fantastic Dutch recipe from the stunning Senna’s bistro.

R EFER – the national rail network – is planning to invest 30 million euros in maintenance work to the Algarve’s rail network during the next two years. Some of the works will take place on the Faro / Vila Real de Santo António section – where there are plans to substitute 21 km of sleepers and 44 km of Statisticstrack.show that 1.9 million passengers travel this line annually, although, according to Comboios de Portugal, the line loses 5 million euros a year due to the poor running of its trains and equipment.

The proposal to lay-off engineers and architects came from Faro’s mayor Macário Correia. He has also ordered that the number of staff kept on for maintenance should be “reduced to the minimum”. The main problem is that the staff payroll and interest payments amount to more than five thousand euros per day. These costs are shared equally between Faro and Loulé Town Councils. According to an audit released in 2005 by the Accounts Tribunal, the Algarve Stadium cost 46.1 million euros to build – and is considered by many, to be a bit of a “white elephant”.

Algarve Stadium ‘reduces’ staff

T he company responsible for the running of the Algarve Stadium, is “downsizing” the number of high level jobs, due to cash-flow problems.

W orks are underway at Faro Airport to receive up to triple the number of passengers that pass through the terminal annually. Currently 5 million passengers use Faro Airport, but according to the airport director António Correia the expansion work will increase the number of planes passing through from 22 per hour up to 30. It’s estimated that the full restructuring project should be completed by 2013.

P olice in Olhão have arrested five suspects in relation to drug trafficking, and carried out a search of a house where a computer, stolen from the German Consulate in Faro, was recovered. The young men ranged between 17 and 24 years of age. An amount of drugs was also seized. Officials at the consulate welcomed the recovery of the computer, and were pleased that important documents, contained on the hard drive, had been safely recovered.

S ay what you will about the rain, it’s a great time to get in a lot of reading, and “The Gift of Rain” by Tan Twan Eng, is a book that will help you forget about the rain in spite of its title. Set in Penang, Malaysia during the second world war, it is a story of tangled loyalties. Philip is a teenager at the outbreak of the war, and through his relationship with a Japanese diplomat, the mysterious Endo, he quickly becomes comprimised in his duty to his family. To protect them, and to save the family business, he goes to work for the occupying forces. As the war drags on and Philip is increasingly implicated in the atrocities committed against his neighbors, his friends, and eventually his family, he begins to look for a way to help his beleaguered islanders fight the Japanese and take back their home. If you want to stay in the east, but would prefer to read some nonfiction, here are two biographies that may interest you: “When Broken Glass Floats” by Chanrithy Him, a survivor of Cambodia’s “killing fields”, gives her account of her familiy’s survival and eventual escape from the Khmer Rouge. “A Thousand Pieces of Gold” by Adeline Yen Mah puts an interesting twist on the personal narrative form; part history, part memoir, using both to “illustrate the influence of proverbs...”. Have a good month.

Using the millinery technique of mosaic I like to create pleasant surroundings, working with the available colors in the world of tiles and glass. The secret is within the idea!”

Petra told us about the philosophy behind her work, ‘The mosaic’. “For me it means creating decorative energy within every single piece.

We were welcomed into Petra’s stunning home and art studio to marvel at her mosaic work.

This month we met up with mosaic artist Petra Kartak and discovered more about the technique she uses to create her beautiful artwork. Petra Kartak, originally from the Czech Republic, lived in Holland for 23 years. It was there that she qualified and practiced as an occupational therapist. She moved to the Algarve 17 years ago to be with her Portuguese partner and, together with her artistic flair, and a lot of hard work, they created a beautiful home and art studio. Although not from an artistic background, Petra ́s natural ability shone through and with her innovative thinking, she started to break and cut tiles and “discovered” mosaics. Her work was of such a good standard that she quickly began to get requests from people who commissioned specific pieces of art to make practical objects become more appealing, for instance, light sconces, shower trays, built in seating areas or hand basins. People often give her a piece of fabric for her to design the piece around and she now also creates beautiful bowls, lamps and wall art.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, discover how bike lover Martin went from mechanic to a well respected fine artist. M artin, who is originally from London, was interested in art from the age of leaving school. He studied art for just one year, but decided to take the opportunity offered to him to train as a mechanic in a motorbike shop. This work led, some years later, to an opening in their in-house advertising agency, designing ads for Harley Davidson, Moto-Guzzi and Ducati. Martin adapted to the role with ease, and thoroughly enjoyed incorporating his passion for bikes and love of art, but unfortunately he was made redundant, and began graphic designing for a printing company. During this time, Martin always bought and sold cars and bikes as a hobby, and saved enough money to set up his own business running a car repair shop. He also bought some tattoo equipment and practiced using it in his spare time, which lead onto another career change. Martin told us “It was cleaner, quieter, didn’t smell of thinners, and, frankly, easier to do”. He opened a tattoo parlour in North Wales, and after several enjoyable years, bought a 40 foot long coach and drove to Spain during the quieter winter months for the business, and never went back. He opened two tattoo studios in the Malaga area and ran these for 9 years, during which time he met his partner Lesley and had 2 children. Although life was great, Martin decided to sell his home in Spain and buy a campervan in which to tour Europe, while the children were still young. On the first day, they found themselves in Olhão and five years later they are still there. Since coming to the Algarve, Martin has developed property and has now bought and rebuilt his own house in HisBrancanes.passion for art has always remained, and not having painted since art school in 1975, in 2008 decided to buy some brushes, paints and paper and have a go again. He started with watercolour and “greatly admires the works of Edward Wesson and James FletcherWatson, both similar in their style, very loose painters whose economy of brush strokes to depict an image is wonderful (and very difficult to Hemaster)”.nowtends to work in acrylics on canvas as the colours are much more vibrant. He prefers the realism path of painting but is just as happy to paint abstract. “I have painted in oils but don’t have the patience waiting for them to dry between workings. There is a famous artist/gallery owner in the USA whose abstract art sells for tens of thousands who says “It doesn’t matter what you paint, or how you paint it, as long as the colour matches the clients sofa”. Martin would like to add that he can match ANY sofa colour on the market today... and he’s a LOT Martincheaper!has a cross section of his work on a site called Fine Art America. This site gives anybody the opportunity to own a piece of art, they deal in Giclee prints (the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink jet printing). 4 Where can people be treated by you? Modern Podiatry requires a surgery and a lot of quite heavy and bulky equipment, so treatment is only available in a surgical setting. We hold surgeries in Amendoeira (just north of Loulé), Vilar do Golfe in Quinta Do Largo, and Oura in Albufeira.

1 What is a Chiropodist? Podiatry, (previously known as Chiropody) is the diagnosis and treatment, by Podiatrists, of diseases and other disorders of the feet. Podiatrists are highly skilled health professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections. 5 Can you do house visits? Not really, it’s a bit like a dentist trying to do house calls. You would be very limited in what you could achieve.

16What is the worst thing we do to our feet? Ignoring pain, corns and hard skin especially if diabetic.

7 What is the most unusual? You really don’t want to know. Anything can present at the surgery from a simple corn to a crushed foot.

9 How can you prevent an in growing toe nail? Ingrowing toe nails are caused by cutting the nail too short and cutting out the Growingcorners.innails (nails which are abnormally curved) can in some cases be retrained to grow flatter (the Podiatrist can bend the nail under heat or apply a brace (much the same as a dentist would to your teeth).

8 Should we go regularly to a Chiropodist like you do a dentist? They say that prevention is better than cure, so the answer is yes. Many conditions are picked up by Podiatrists in their early stages, some are referred on and some dealt with by the Podiatrist. Regular checkups are especially important for certain groups of people. Diabetics and people with peripheral vascular disease must be seen on a regular basis to ensure the feet remain clear of anything that could result in ulceration as this can lead on to, in some cases, subsequent amputation.

15What is the best bit of advice you can give our readers for happy, healthy feet? If your feet hurt, something is wrong, you should visit a Registered Podiatrist, who will advise you on the best course of treatment, and hopefully prevent foot problems before they occur.

10 Corns! Are they for ever or can they be got rid of? Corns can be got rid of, but it is not that easy. Cutting them out with a scalpel is the easy part but stopping them regrowing is more difficult. If you “remove the cause the effect will cease”, and the cause might be a change in your gait through weight gain or injury, or footwear.

6 What is the most common complaint you deal with? Probably athlete’s foot and the associated fungal nails.

13What languages do you speak? The Queen’s English. But we have many foreign patients, Portuguese, French, Irish, German, Dutch, Spanish and we seem to be able to communicate. Of course in the clinics there are multi lingual staff so communication is generally not a problem.

R obert, a patient of ours, came into our clinic last week for a hearing evalua tion. His primary complaint was a loud ringing noise in his ears. This is called tinnitus. He claimed that currently “the high pitched con stant noise was so loud you ought to be able to lean near him and hear it too”. The tinnitus was making Rob ert irritable and short-tempered and this was making him focus constant ly on the noise. Tinnitus is a phan tom head or ear noise that the per son perceives with no outside noise present and can be heard in one ear or both. It can be present all the time or come and go. It can change pitch and loudness. Robert describes his sound as a ringing but other patients have complained of hissing, buzz ing, chirping and even insect noises! Tinnitus can begin after noise expo sure, head or neck trauma, ear infec tion, after taking toxic medication, certain types of nerve or facial con ditions and even smoking! But how can it be treated? Although there is no cure, scientists and doctors have discovered several treatments that may give you relief, which include hearing aids and maskers. Now, many people with tinnitus also have a hearing loss. Wearing a hear ing aid makes it easier for some people to hear the sounds they need to hear by making them louder. The better you hear other people talking or the music you like, the less you notice your tinnitus. Maskers are small electronic devices that use sound to make tinnitus less notice able. L oulé, the capital of the district of the same name, is an important rural, administrative, and active market town with over 20,000 residents. The weekly fair attracts tourists from all over the Algarve. The town’s landmark is the market hall (Mercado Municipal), which re-opened, in early 2007 after a long period of renovation. Its architecture has a classic Moorish style influence. The earthquake in 1755 destroyed, as in most other towns in the Algarve, most of the historic buildings. Today, you can only see some remains of the Arab castle. Located on the spur of a hill, which was once the site of the town, it used to boast a series of defensive walls approximately 940m in length. Three towers, a turret and a stretch of ramparts with a walkway along the top define the defensive structure. Inside lies the“alcaidaria” - where the commander of the castle lived - which was possibly built in the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 18th century. In the courtyard of the castle there is a well, some medieval blocks and the arch of the old gateway leading to the town. There are many beautiful churches in Loulé and one which you may have seen from the motorway is the church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, a modern white domed shaped church with a smaller chapel next to it, displaying intricate religious paintings. Running beneath Loulé at depths of between 230m and 2700m are several kilometers of galleries where rock salt of great purity (90% pure) is panned, an interesting facet of Loulé’s economy, that, for the time being, is not on the tourist trail. The annual Carnival in February with its colourful procession around the centre of the city is considered one of the best in Portugal, and began in Carnival1906. in Loulé is one of the biggest, brightest and boldest street parties in Portugal, a three-day extravaganza of mirth, mischief and merrymaking. Festivities continue into the night with dancing till dawn It would seem that planning for Algarve carnivals starts early in the year, and many locals get involved, making the thousands of paper flowers that adorn the floats. Local participation in the actual events extends to the farmers, who turn out in their tractors to pull the floats. Many get into the mood of the event, with their outfits themed to suit. Everywhere you visit in the weeks leading up to the penultimate weekend of February, there are posters and signs advising of the dates and venues, with most emphasizing that attendance is free, although, due to the scale and professional nature of the Loulé carnival, a small fee is charged. Each Algarve carnival seems to have something different to offer. While the Loulé carnival is undoubtedly the most lavish (with professional samba dancers on show), there are more amateur (and enthusiastic) smaller Algarve events. While not quite so professional, the obvious pride and enjoyment in the outcome is there for all to see at the carnivals in Tavira and Moncarapacho. Smaller parades take place in the surrounding villages where the school children dress up and quite often spray each other with silly string and throw confetti. Most carnivals have a theme, and there’s much good-natured satirising of life’s woes and joys, with a particular penchant for having a tilt at politicians, both local and national. Balcony viewpoints, both private and commercial, are at a premium. And of course, nowadays, everyone is snapping away with a digital camera or mobile phone. All the events are well attended, with locals turning out to support their friends and family. Although most shops are shut, there are stalls selling local delicacies, ‘farturas’, chourico, beer and wine. One notable aspect is the wide spread of age groups among attendees. It would seem that Algarve carnivals have something for everyone The parading is done along a circuitous route, so if you missed the start of the procession, don’t worry... all the floats will pass you by at some time! t was only a year ago when the financial crisis was in full swing. Central bank action has avoided a global economic meltdown, but the price has been high and will have to be paid over a great number of years. Let us look ahead what this year may have in stock and the impact on real estate in the Algarve.

Quantitative easing measures cannot last forever and a failed exit strategy by monetary authorities could create another shock. It is also clear financial institutions will be unable to sustain a normal pace of credit intermediation for years to come. In addition the risk free status of government bonds has come under scrutiny due to unsustainable budget deficits and high public debt levels versus GDP. Greece is a prime example. Portugal’s finances are not in a good condition either. The more worrying problem with both countries is that in the past, even during the good years, they have not been able to implement structural reforms and increase productivity. Greece’s sovereign debt rating has been revised downwards by credit rating agencies. Portugal’s sovereign debt rating is placed on a negative look out, resulting in higher borrowing cost for both government and companies/consumers alike. In general there are three economic scenarios for 2010: a W, V or Lshape recovery. The first would imply another leg down before a recovery sets in. The second would

Page 19 offer a strong upswing of economic activity and the latter would suggest a sluggish, slow growth of economic activity. There is enough uncertainty still out there and more deleveraging to be done for a V- shape recovery to take place and therefore this has a low probability. On the other hand a double dip – W-shape – would be negative for real estate. Post crisis recoveries are typically anaemic, and it is more likely we will have a moderate - possibly jobless – L shape economic recovery. For real estate this is not the best, but still a good scenario.

The current uncertainty also offers opportunities. Property in the Algarve has become a more attractive investment now that prices have adjusted. Moreover, we are in a buyers’ market, and there are still distressed vendors out there. Some areas are more affected than others by an oversupply of newly built properties and it will take time for demand to catch up with supply. A positive is that many new projects have been put on hold, limiting additional supply in a weak market. However, the market for villas and countryside properties has been holding up relatively well, as it is more difficult and time consuming to get permission to build new properties. We believe with the return of economic stability, confidence will follow suit. When it does, pent up demand may soon put an end to this buyers’ market. Bijker.

S ate is originally from Indonesia or Malaysia and normally consists of three or four pieces of meat on a bamboo skewer with a thin Soya sauce. When the Dutch colonised Indonesia, they brought the dish to Holland and changed the sauce to peanut sauce and it is eaten with salad and bread. Now, it is probably one of the most famous dishes from Holland. It can be made with many types of meat but is normally made with pork or chicken. Firstly, the meat is marinated with many spices and ketjap manis. To ensure the meat is tender, it is placed on skewers and grilled. The spicy peanut sauce is then poured over the top. Crop rotation Do not grow a vegetable in the same spot year after year. If you do then soil pests and diseases will increase and soil nutrient levels will become unbalanced. Crop rotation is the answer. However if this seems like too much trouble then follow a very simple routine of roots this year, an above ground crop the next year and the following year returning to a root content of the soil is to improve the crumb structure and to increase the water and food holding capacity. In autumn or early winter spread bulky organic matter over the surface (approx 5kg per sq. m) The area chosen should be for crops other than roots or Brassicas, but old compost can be used to enrich all land if it is starved of humus. Animal manure is not always easy to find and the answer is to make as much compost as you can, using both garden and kitchen waste. Make sure some carbon-rich matter (straw, leaves, chopped newspaper etc) is present, and remember to keep the heat in and the water out. Fork the organic matter into the soil before digging starts if time allows. The objective should be to enrich part of the vegetable plot each year until the whole area has been treated. you plan to sow or plant in the spring and remember do not try to dig and make a seed bed in one operation. Dig out a trench about 45cm wide and one spade depth deep at the front of the plot and move the soil to the back. Spread compost over the surface of the area to be enriched with humus.

T his month’s article is structured around the guidelines for growing your own vegetables, and can be adjusted to suit whatever size garden or plot you have decided to use. Now let’s get started!

The instructions so far have been to follow the rotational plan and in each allotted area to grow the vegetables of your choice at the spacings recommended on the seed packets. You can, however, increase the overall yield from your plot by using one or more of the techniques I have described below. Successional sowing Several vegetables such as lettuce and radishes, cannot be stored for later use. To avoid a glut and then famine, it is necessary to sow short rows of your chosen variety every few weeks. For the gardener who does not want to do this you can now get mixed seed packets with an early and late maturing variety which will give you a prolonged harvesting period from a single sowing.

Thin out as normal. The radish or lettuce will be ready for harvesting long before the leeks have developed to the stage of needing the space occupied by the quick growing marker plants. Intercropping Intercropping is a neater method than intersowing for making maximum use of the land earmarked for a slower growing crop. Between adjacent rows of slow developers, such as Brussels sprouts or leeks, sow a row of a crop which will be harvested in summer before the prime crop needs the space. Popular intercroppers are radishes, early peas, early carrots, spinach and dwarf lettuce. Make sure that the intercropping vegetables have enough room and the space between the rows must be wide enough to allow easy passage. Remember if necessary widen the recommended row space of the prime crop if you plan to sow an intercrop.

The basic principle is to create a series of rectangular beds which are divided by permanent paths. These paths are covered with gravel or bark chippings and the beds must be narrow enough to be reached from all sides. Organic matter is added to the soil and it should be left to settle for a couple of weeks before sowing or planting. The yearly round begins in autumn or early winter as the traditional method, but only with a top up of organic matter and dug over as digging is not required as the ground has not been walked on. When it comes to choosing the vegetables for your plot, the general rule is to pick dwarf or early maturing varieties which are ideal for the bed system. One bonus of the bed system is that plants are grown at equal distances in all directions meaning that when mature the leaves touch which helps when it comes to looking after the plot. Firstly, there are no muddy walk ways, and secondly, due to the closeness of the plants, the weeds are smothered. Getting the most from your plot

Catch cropping Purple sprouting broccoli will have to come to an end in April or early May, and early peas will be finished by late June or July. Catch cropping is the answer to summer long bare ground.

Fork over the area and level the surface with a rake, sow a quick maturing crop such as spring onions, radishes, dwarf lettuce, beetroots, turnips or French beans. The crop will be harvested before the time for Autumn digging and any rotational plan will be left in place. Intersowing This useful double purpose technique involves mixing the seed of a compact and quick growing crop such as radish or Tom Thumb lettuce with a slower maturing crop such as leeks. The radish and lettuce seedlings emerge quickly and mark out the row, an important advantage when hoeing.

Transplanting Transplanting involves moving seedlings to their permanent home where they will grow to maturity. These transplants may have been raised in a seed bed in the garden, brought from a garden centre or grown indoors in pots or trays. It is a temptation to use thinning and plant them elsewhere, but transplanting is not suitable for all vegetables. It is firmly recommended for most members of the cabbage family, acceptable for some popular crops such as peas and beans but definitely not recommended for many others such as lettuce and root Watercrops. both the seedlings and the site where they are to be grown on the day before transplanting. Before application cultivate and water the surface so that it will be moist, weed free and friable. Watering Dryness of the soil around the roots is one of the most serious problems the vegetable grower may have to face. The lack of water during a prolonged dry spell can result in a small crop or even no crop at all. Despite the recommendations to sow thinly, you will usually find that the emerging seedlings are too close together. Thinning is necessary and this task should be tackled as soon as the plants are large enough to handle. The soil should be moist, so, if necessary, gently water. Hold down the soil around the unwanted seedling with one hand and pull it up with the other. If the seedlings are too close together to allow this method, nip off the top growth of the unwanted plants. After thinning, firm the soil around the remaining seedlings and water gently. This thinning is often done in stages until the final spacing is reached.

Harvesting Many gardeners aim to produce giant vegetables to match the ones they see on show benches, and you may therefore be surprised at some of the harvesting sizes recommended. Turnips the size of golf balls or carrots no longer than your finger although not economical for the farmer are the sizes for the best flavor. Not all vegetables are best picked early and the flavor of Swedes and celery does not decline with age. With some crops such as marrows, cucumbers, peas and beans, it is essential to pick regularly, as just a few ripe fruits or pods left on a plant can bring cropping to an end. Before you begin to harvest your crops always learn the best methods to collect your bounty, as carelessly tearing off pods, or pulling out roots by their foliage, can damage the plant or even leave part of the plant behind.

Remember, when applying a fertilizer, make sure you do not get any on the plants leaves. As a time saving alternative you can now use a slow release fertilizer which steadily Additional weeds will appear among

Feeding A number of chemical elements are essential for plant growth. Three are required in relatively large amounts, nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root development and potash for strengthening resistance to disease and poor growing conditions. A compound fertilizer contains all three of these major elements and a general purpose fertilizer has these elements in roughly equal amounts. There are a number of other elements which are required in very small amounts, the trace elements. Shortage of molybdenum, boron etc can cause problems in specific vegetables, but trace element deficiency disorders are rare. High yield vegetables, however, are a drain on the soil’s reserves of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash which means that feeding is generally necessary, but manure or fertilizer is the age old question asked. Actually there is nothing to argue about as both are required in equal amounts. One of the most important reasons for fertilizers is to provide a base dressing just before planting or sowing. Use a general purpose product such as growmore, but for crops that have a long growing season a second or third top dressing may be required.

The answer is to ensure the soil around the roots is not allowed to become dry. The first step is to incorporate adequate organic matter into the soil which increases water retention. Next, make sure that the top 20cm of the soil is thoroughly moist but not waterlogged at sowing or planting time. Finally, put down a mulch in late spring. You now have done all you can to ensure a good moisture reserve in your soil, the rest is up to the weather. If there is a prolonged dry spell then watering will be necessary, especially for tomatoes, marrows, beans, peas and onions. The rule is to water the soil gently and thoroughly every 3-7 days when the weather is dry during the critical period. This is the time between flowering and full pod development for peas and beans, and from seedling to maturity for leaf crops. Apply 10 litres per sq m when overall overall watering. Water slowly and close to the base of the plants and try to water in the morning rather than midday or evening. For smaller lots a watering can is often ok, but when the plot is larger then perhaps the use of a lay flat perforated tubing is best suited for the job.

The first match of 2010 saw torrential rain turn the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão into a series of small lakes and noone would have been surprised if the players had appeared in canoes! In the UK this game would never have been played but in Portugal the show must go on. Olhanense adapted well and as early as the second minute should have been ahead when Castro forced the ball home but the officials deemed that it had not crossed the line. The visitors came more into the game and looked dangerous on the attack and it was no surprise when William lashed the ball home to give them the lead.
