With the expansion, it will cover 55,000 square metres and include 175 shops according to benno van veggel, director for southern europe of the dutch company multi mdevelopment.r.vanveggel however said that the expansion plan still requires approval from Faro town hall and talks are being finalised with the owner of the land, the German company commerz real investmentgesellschaft. this project represents an investment of €53 million and should start during the second half of this year, being completed during early 2014. after the completion, the dutch promoters hope to attract around nine million visitors each year, which will be a significant increase to the current visitor numbers, thanks to the introduction of key stores such as Fnac, Primark and h&m. inaugurated on 13 march 2001, Fórum algarve was the first shopping centre of its kind in the algarve, with the first hypermarket in the region.

Yoga forbodyyour& mind

Yoga is an ancient mindbody practice with origins in eastern indian Philosophy. the word yoga in sanskrit actually means to yoke or unite. Yoga combines physical postures (asanas) with breathwork (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana), concentration (dharana), relaxation, balance, strength, and cstamina.urrentresearch on yoga suggests that it improves mood and gives a general sense of well-being. it is beneficial in counteracting stress and reducing heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. Yoga for anxiety many people suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. anxiety can be a useful emotion if it heightens your awareness to make healthier choices. however, when anxiety becomes more than a little nervousness, it can be very debilitating. sufferers of anxiety and panic disorders complain of exhaustion and mental fatigue. some of these symptoms include obsessive thinking, insomnia, migraines, intestinal problems, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath and heart palpitations. the appearance of anxiety in your daily life can drastically influence your lifestyle. research suggests that excessive worry sabotages the immune system, weakening the body’s ability to fight off disease and Yogaheal.iseffective in treating anxiety by reducing the symptoms. One of yoga’s basic tenants is to turn your focus inward, letting the external world go. Focusing within facilitates recognition of what may be triggering the anxiety, which is usually those habitual thoughts and unresolved conflicts. Yoga breath work is one of the key methods in counteracting anxiety. When threatened, real or imagined, our bodies react. therefore, during an anxiety attack the body reacts to what is perceived as a threat. this results in tension, rigidity, and choppy, constricted or cessation of breath. Yoga teaches you to slow down your breath, relax your body, and look inward at the precipitating Yogaevent.for depression the benefit of yoga on depression is another area being explored. One of the biggest contributing factors to depression is stress. depression increases the fight or flight response in the sympathetic nervous system.

Orthomolecular medicine is a form of complementary and alternative medicine that helps maintain health and prevent or treat diseases by optimizing nutritional intake and/or prescribing supplements. Orthomolecular medicine, as conceptualized by double-nobel laureate linus Pauling, aims to restore the optimum environment of the body by correcting imbalances or deficiencies based on individual biochemistry, using substances natural to the body such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, trace elements and fatty acids. it is known, for example, that a smoker spends 25mg of vitamin c per cigarette consumed. if this person smokes a pack a day, will lose 500 mg of this vitamin daily. and today, we know the many benefits vitamins provide, is to combat free radicals, synthesis of hormones, or even stimulating the immune system. Orthomolecular medicine also aims to slow aging. the targeted use of antioxidants strengthens the immune defenses, improves the health of cells and activates the body's functions that wear out over time. www.ecde.orgAlgarve,InternationalPortugal 910 5.00

Health Persistent/chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system elevates the stress hormone cortisol. it is a well known fact that cortisol has a major influence on stress related illnesses. Part of yoga’s effectiveness is its ability to decrease stress and increase a sense of well-being. Yoga breath work boosts the oxygen level to the brain; the postures alleviate tension, promoting introspection and in conjunction with deep relaxation and meditation techniques, produces a calming effect. among yoga’s anti-stress benefits are positive levels of certain brain chemicals that decrease catecholamines. Findings also suggest lower levels of the hormone neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (when elevated, all of these neurotransmitters are involved in fight or flight response and increase fear and anger and decrease the ability to think realistically), which facilitate a calming feeling. there is also an increase in oxytocin, the hormone that is released during childbirth, maternal bonding and during orgasm, sometimes referred to as the “love hormone.” students who practice yoga on a regular basis report a feeling of increased trust and a heightened sense of connectedness and bonding with others. if you teach yoga and run classes here in the algarve, please email us with your details so they can be published in the next issue.

Church reveals British connection, by Chris Wright N estling high above the river Gilao opposite the Porta nova hotel, tavira, one could easily miss the small santa ana church. What remains of the former military garrison during the Peninsular Wars is now a small museum. When the church was undergoing renovation work in 2005 a grave was discovered near the altar which marks the last resting place of five month old henrique (henry) hawker Gamage Williams, the son of sir edmund Keynton Williams. With the rank of lieutenant colonel he was in charge of the british 14th infantry division based in tavira between 1815 and 1820. sir edmund, from the small village of uddy in monmouthshire, was appointed Knight of the tower & sword of Portugal in 1813. the award was the pinnacle of the Portuguese honours system and was created by King afonso v in 1459. sir edmund was a larger than life character who was often at odds with the authorities but was greatly respected by the men under his command. in 1828, on passage with his regiment to india, he was charged by the ships captain with seven counts of improper conduct. the charges included ‘scandalous and infamous behaviour’, inviting a junior officer into his cabin to play cards and complaining of some rancid food by stating at dinner ‘now gentlemen, before you retire, recollect that my opinion is that the cheese is bad’. at his court martial at Fort st.George, madras he was found not guilty on all counts and acquitted. he died at the age of 71 and is buried in undy.

Kath applied for a job at Yorkshire Lin en, who were at the time due to open a new store in Almancil. They offered her the opportunity to manage their new shop, and two years later asked Mike and Kath if they would like to buy the business. Kath explained “It was a great opportunity but felt it wasn’t in the greatest of locations", so began looking for a new site. They found the ideal unit on the roundabout in Al mancil, and set about the necessary alterations. After 3 weeks of very hard work they opened the doors on the 9th January 2010.

12

Kath and Mike are both originally from the Rochdale area, and had visited the Algarve, mainly around the Albu feira area for many years, to holiday and visit friends. They decided to look for a property to renovate and after a chance meeting in 2006 found the ideal place in Silves. Both gave up their respective jobs, Mike a plumber and Kath the manager for Dunnes stores, an Irish department store based in Salford, Manchester, they began the restoration of their new home. After 6 months Kath felt that the building environment, wasn’t for her, so she decided she would look for a full time job, whilst Mike pressed ahead with the restoration work.

T his year, the loulé carnival of 2012 will be paying homage to Julio Guerreiro. We are also informed that there will be an alteration in the carnival parade dates. On the 18th, 19th and 21st of February, the José da costa mealha avenue will once again be host to the tradition carnival parade, which this year brings some tchanges.hisyear’s carnival, apart from the ‘domingo Gordo’ and ‘terça-Feira de carnival’, the parade will be on the saturday and not on the monday as the years before. With the theme “troika the crises for loulé carnival”, political, social and sporting satire will once again be the mark of the oldest carnival in the country which celebrates its 106th anniversary. a total of 15 floats, with some of the most popular figures of the moment, such as the leaders of Germany and France, angela merkel and nicolas sarkozy, the Portuguese Prime minister Pedro Passos coelho and his employees, and also the leader of the opposition, antónio José seguro, will be the crew of these floats and will transmit the theme of the moment, within the country and the world, and all in good humour.

in the world of football, the figures of national team coach, Paulo bento, and the players bosingwa and ricardo carvalho will be the stars of one of the floats which will address the case that pitted the Portuguese coach two corner defences for the Júlioteam. Guerreiro, one of the locals who was a main contributor to the carnival Project since its professionalization at the end of the 70s, will be honoured and a float dedicated to him, which will have his caricature. this is the kind of tribute that the loulé council intend to do for this former employee, who

On monday the carnival Party will take place, dedicated to the “World of Fantasy” with dJs. entry fee 7€.

18 J ust as i start writing this article in the middle of January i can hear the first raindrops falling on the roof of my house. this winter the weather has been particularly mild with lots of sunshine, above average temperatures and hardly any rain to speak of. at a time when people question the algarve tourism boards effectiveness of the promotion of the algarve, the region shows itself at its best. last december the average occupancy rate of hotels in the algarve was a disappointing 20.3%, a decline of more than 11% versus 2010. needless to say hotels need higher occupancy rates to even breakeven and many have offered discounts to fill up rooms. holiday makers looking for accommodation have been spoilt for choice with more and bigger bargains than ever before. in addition everywhere you look you see shops offering discounts of up to 70%. unfortunately some are in process of liquidation. but hey, everybody loves a bargain. despite the increase in vat, electricity prices and the much discussed introduction of tolls on the a22, for most tourists their vacation in the algarve exceeded their expectations. Once back home, this is the best word of mouth promotion the algarve can wish for. Property Everybodyloves a bargain

For those who have been waiting to buy a property there are many bargains around. villas with price reductions of 50% and more and still open for offers. Or how about a two bedroom/two bathroom apartment with communal pool, gym, sauna and games room for euro 122.000 or a three bedroom villa with (legal) pool for an amazing 160.000 euros? (the last property has been sold) however, not all properties are a bargain. there still is an oversupply of newly built apartments and townhouses in some areas. these would have been relatively easy to sell due to their good location, if they would not be overpriced. it is often the case that a developer has been caught by the economic downturn and is unable to sell the remaining properties. due to mortgage obligations they are not able to lower prices more aggressively while at the same time re-sales from other owners in the same development are undercutting prices. the problem is the banks attitude to non performing loans. they are extremely slow to write off part of the loan. Where as a 5 to 15% write off a year ago would have worked to stimulate demand, if a bank needs to foreclose in 6 –12 months time they risk a write off of 30%. at the time of writing the european debt crisis has not been resolved, but progress was made and it seems to have at least stabilised for the time being. Yields of spanish, French and italian bonds have decreased. standard & Poor’s lowered the credit rating of various countries in europe, including France who lost their aaa rating, but the news hardly moved financial markets. this could indicate most of the bad news has already been priced in, and on positive developments the markets could rally. a solution to the sovereign debt crisis is crucial for property prices to stabilize. This is the 15th novel about Jack Reacher and the previous 14 have all made the best selling lists in europe and in America. The Coventry born author has created a modern day hero for the masses that no one else can touch. Express by Robert Crais

What's it called? is the back cover summery good? do i like the sound of the title? strangely these are the same reasons not to read a book, which is why i've never gotten around to reading robert crais. however, when the bookshelves are bare... Once again we have an author using a regular character to link his books. in these case elvis cole the self styled worlds best private investigator. and boy, was i all shook up. an excellent read and i've read several more since by the author. Ok, theres a few good old cliches, ex special forces, living alone, strange loner partner. there's also a nice touch as it's intimated he lives next door to harry bosch. the story here involves a high profile murder, and the defence need the best to save the accused. enter elvis cole P.i. to look for leads, working alongside a possible corrupt detective. Female of course, sparks of course. the accused is a celebrity chef, pleading innocent and throwing everything at a defence using high profile attorney elliot truly. truly subcontracts elvis, and away he goes. things suddenly start to go wrong during the quest for evidence. how far would the defence go to get a result? is a trail of evidence being left to be discovered by an unwitting elvis? this is a cracking story of what's true and what's not, and several stories intertwine including the past misdemeanours of afore mentioned la cop angela ross. there are visits to people she has put awayin the past, who seem somehow linked to the current case. darting in and out of the book is Pike, the partner, unofficial of course, of elvis, and guardian angel to all. a bit far fetched as a character, but likeable all the same. to be honest i never saw the end panning out as it did, although i was halfway there. the other cole novels have made a great series and have created a likeable character. maybe its not about the author or the title but potluck when it comes to picking a great read. lets be more adventerous and give the old guard a miss from time to time.

lOTS ARRIVINGlNEWOFINESWEEKlY! fernished

Afern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants belonging to the botanical group known as Pteridophyta unlike mosses, they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). they have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor Fernsflowers.first appear in the fossil record 360 million years ago in the carboniferous but many of the current families and species did not appear until roughly 145 million years ago in the late cretaceous (after flowering plants came to dominate many environments). Ferns are not of major economic importance, but some are grown or gathered for food, as ornamental plants, for remediating contaminated soils, and have been the subject of research for their ability to remove some chemical pollutants from the air. some are significant weeds. they also play a role in mythology, medicine, and art. Ferns are perennial plants grown for their attractive foliage. they vary in height from just a few inches high to 50 feet tall. many ferns grow on the forest floor, although varieties are found in the desert, open fields and on mountaintops. rather than reproduce by flowering, as many plants do, ferns propagate themselves through spores. most ferns are best grown in shade outdoors and in medium light indoors. Outside, they require rich soil that is high in organic matter. Plant indoor ferns in 75 percent peat moss and 25 percent sand. Ferns require occasional feeding with halfstrength fertilizer solutions. like many houseplants, potted ferns can grow and thrive as part of your outdoor landscaping. For some plant lovers, giving a root-bound houseplant a new home is a better idea than merely dividing and repotting the fern for continued life

indoors. to gradually acclimatise the fern to its move, place it outside in a well-shaded area for up to one week before transplanting and check daily for any changes. the best time to transplant an indoor fern is in the spring after any danger of frost has passed. choose a spot in the garden in partial or full shade with good drainage, adding some sandy soil in the bottom of the hole to help aerate the plant. to remove the fern from the pot, water it well and let it drain for several minutes. dig your fingers into the base of the fern beneath the soil so as not to tear the fronds, and knock the side of the pot with or against something sturdy to loosen the fern. the plant should now easily slide out of the pot. set the whole root ball into the bed, and fill with a mix of potting soil and planting soil. add some fertilizer to the site only after transplanting, but keep the bed well watered throughout its first season. With either type of transplant, remember to locate the new planting in an area of partial to full shade. Prepare and water the soil at the new site and always dig up as large a root ball from the original site as can be managed. this will lessen shock or stress on the plant. the best time to transplant both types of ferns is during an overcast day or in the evening right before ssundown.pacing between plants depends on the size and species of the fern. Ferns are desirable for their beautifully textured foliage and for the fact that most will grow well even in the shade. in fact, many ferns prefer shady areas with cool, moist soil. some ferns grow slowly. most grow at a moderate rate, and a very few grow quickly. most fast-growing ferns are tropical in origin and thrive in warm, humid tclimates.hemacho Fern (nephrolepis falcate) is a showy, classic fern desirable for its long, slender fronds. these ferns are not only fast growing, but very large, with fronds that can reach 4 feet in length, with widths of 8 inches. When planted in the ground, macho ferns achieve a maximum height of 4 feet and width of 6 feet, so leave plenty of room for this giant to spread out. the fronds are glossy green with a weeping habit that is attractive in hanging tbaskets.hemaiden hair Fern (adiantum pedatum,), is fast-growing, but once it reaches maturity, it stays at a reasonable size of from 12 to 18 inches. these delicate-looking ferns are not as hardy as many other ferns. they need consistently moist soil and protection from strong winds. these ferns also need high humidity, so place them on a humidity tray (a shallow tray filled with pebbles and water) if growing them indoors. Once the plant wilts from a lack of water, it will not "perk up" if watered but it will produce shoots. although this fern thrives in moist soil and air, it is not tropical in origin. the asparagus Fern is characterized by bushy, delicate lacy like foliage that looks very similar to asparagus, hence the name. it has trailing / climbing like stems radiating from the center. the asparagus Fern is actually not a fern at all. it is an asparagus, therefore unlike other ferns; the asparagus Fern prefers bright light and occasional dryness. this fern will look its best when used in a cascading appearance or hanging basket. the asparagus Fern prefers bright light however will tolerate lower light levels. Keep in mind that in lower light environments, this fern will not grow as well so new growth will be limited. aim to keep near a window providing bright light, but it can be filtered light. the asparagus Fern prefers low to moderate water levels. if your fern begins to drop needles, it may not be receiving enough water. Yellowing of the foliage can signal under watering as well. aim to keep the soil semi moist allowing to somewhat dry inbetween watering, but not completely. Keep in mind, that even after you have corrected the watering schedule, the yellowing foliage will not turn green again, so you may prune those fronds out.

pools to improve water quality and lower chlorine levels and provide oxidation which is the “burning up” of these organic contaminants such as body oil, perspiration, urine, sun screen etc. however, salt water pools are not a chemical or even a chlorine free pool. salt water is not capable of providing any sanitation for pool water without electrolysis. during electrolysis, salty water is forced across a special metal cell which is charged with an electrical current. this process creates chlorine. this chlorine has an identical chemical structure as purchased chlorine and gives us the same benefits and the same problems as purchased chlo rine. You’re basically creating a minichlorine factory inside your swim ming pool. do salt water pools save pool owners money? in some cases, the amortized equipment cost is less than purchasing chlorine. the new automated chlorine injection system commonly found on commercial pools provides automatic chlorine injection systems which continually test the water and then add just the right amount of liquid chlorine to a tpool.hemain issue with a salt water pool is the high chlorine level required to sanitize and oxidize the pool wa ter. salt water pools rely 100% on chemical disinfection (chlorine) and the recommended free chlorine re sidual is the same as traditional chlorine pools, 2 – 4 ppm. Chlorine Free pool chlorine free pools have long been on the wish list of pool enthusiasts

everywhere. We’ve been hearing about going green at home for years. We take a look at two effective op tions for getting the chlorine out of the pool. the technology we review here is well established, proven, and com monly used in commercial pools and spas. the first involves eliminating all chlorine, and the second method lowers chlorine to levels found in drinking water. although the second option is not truly chlorine free, you’ll want to hear about it because it’s the better option for most pool owners who are simply seeking a pool that is safe, healthy and easy to manage. it’s also the cutting-edge technol ogy chosen by over 60% of modern aquatic centers. First lets establish what we’re trying to accomplish with a chlorine free pool. many pool owners are look ing to eliminate the toxic chemicals or chlorine by-products. You may be surprised to learn that this can be accomplished one of two ways: a truly chlorine free pool or an ultralow chorine pool. First, let’s take a look at the chlorine free pool option. the most effective method for achieving a chlorine free pool is the powerful combination of ultraviolet disinfection and hydrogen perox ide. You're probably familiar with a hydrogen peroxide as a topical anti septic for disinfecting a cut or maybe for bleaching hair. What you may not know is that hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizer that can be com bined with ultraviolet light to create a chlorine free swimming pool. the combination of hydrogen peroxide Is there an alternative to the stinging eyes and bleached costumes?

t’s a well known fact that swim mers that exit the pool leave behind organic matter such as perspiration, urine, body oil, sun screen and other contaminants. but it may surprise you that a variety of chemical reactions take place, dis rupting water quality long after the swimmer leaves the pool. recent research results are alarming. swim ming pool chlorine has emerged as an area of concern with respect to human health. researchers recom mend taking action to lower the con centrations of disinfection by-prod ucts. here we look at some options you may consider when building or upgrading your pool to reduce the chemical levels. the green movement has lead pool owners to move away from chlorine disinfection and salt water pools. ul traviolet pool sanitation is a step in the right direction. With uv disinfec tion, less is more. uv is fully compat ible with salt water pools, so the two are sometimes used together. chlo rine levels can be reduced to just 0.5 ppm - that's the chlorine level found in drinking water. ultraviolet disinfection was first introduced on commercial swimming pools, where water quality is critical. Salt Water pools like other pool sanitation systems, the purpose of a salt water pool is to reduce the level of microorgan isms (usually by 99.9% or more) to safe levels. salt water pools usually only serve the purpose of sanitation, and do not have the ability to oxidize contaminants, so uv disinfection systems may be added to salt water

Over the past few years, one tech nology has distinguished itself as the gold standard in swimming pool disinfection –ultraviolet light. in most pools, chemicals are ex pected to do all the work. but with uv, over 99% of the organic matter in pools and spas are destroyed by a powerful ultraviolet light. ultravio let does the heavy lifting so chlorine and chemicals can be reduced by 80-90%. chlorine levels can be low ered to just 0.5 ppm, about the level found in drinking water. For most pool owners, an ultra-low chlorine pool can provide all the benefits of a chorine free pool. scientific studies have proven that an ultra-low chlo rine pool (with drinking water chlo rine levels) doesn’t have any of the side effects of regular chlorinated pools and they are easier to main tain.

All change at Olhanense

Local sports news from Chris Wright. With no league win since October and dumped out of the Portugal (Fa) cup and the league cup by 2nd division there was an air of despondency surrounding sc Olhanense during the festive season. but all that was to change as daúto Faquirá was shown th door and in came former Portuguese international sérgio conceição. during an illustrious career, the highlight being when he scored all three goals in Portugal’s stunning 3-0 victory over Germany in the euro 2000 finals in the netherlands, he starred for Fc Porto, Parma, lazio and inter milan. this is conceição’s first managerial appointment and he has wasted no time in whipping the team into shape. his first game was at high flying maritimo (madeira) where the home were 2-0 up after just half-an-hour. a penalty on the stroke of half-time, converted by skipper rui duarte, reduced the arrears. the new boss made a number of tactical changes at the break and Olhanense could so easily have snatched a point if salvador agra’s centre had reached the unmarked djalmir. the following week beira-mar arrived in Olhão having lost only two away games all season. after a slow but industrious first 45 minutes the game came alive after the break. On fifty-five minutes the home side took the lead when sporting loanee Wilson eduardo volleyed home after good work by salvador agra. centre-forward Yontcha, having a great game upfront, and salvador agra maintained a high line and were a constant threat as Olhanense continued to attack. With ten minutes to go the home side increased their lead through a rui duarte penalty. With only minutes remaining Olhanense conceded a penalty but continued to attack as they recorded an impressive 2-1 victory. madeira adVenTure For the third year running a party of fifty expat supporters and 'Os Gorilas' travelled to madeira for the game with maritimo. the beautiful island, basking in warm winter sunshine, was explored including a visit to camacha where the first ever organised football game in Portugal took place in 1875. despite the football defeat the group had a fantastic time including an evening with maritimo fans at their clubhouse in Funchal culminating in a firework display launched from a narrow grass verge in the middle of a dual carriageway! SaLVador agra SignS For reaL BeTiS Portugal u21 international salvador agra has signed for spanish Premier league side real betis (sevilha) until the end of 2014/15 season. it is reported that Olhanense will initially receive €200,000 whilst retaining a percentage of the player against future transfers. it is hoped that agra will remain with Olhanense until the end of the season before moving over the border. the brazilian striker lucas vinicius is training with the algarve side as he is assessed as a future signing whilst there are rumours that the american international striker Josy altidore could be on his way from dutch side aZ alkmaar. eXCiTing TimeS aT oLhanenSe Fans have a chance to see sérgio conceição’s rejuvenated team as they entertain rio ave on sunday

Olhanense President isidoro sousa said, “this is a great loss to the smaller clubs at a time when we are being squeezed from all angles, lower attendances and a rise in iva bWin were one of the few companies from abroad bringing money into Portuguese soccer. it is time for the government to step in and resolve the situation.”

SporTing eSCape WiTh a poinT the largest crowd of the season watched as Olhanense so nearly beat lisbon giants sporting. the man stopping the home side taking all three points was sporting’s international keeper rui Patrício who made two point blank saves from Wilson eduardo in a stirring second-half. salvador agra was again in fine form and centre-back mauricio was a colossus at the heart of the defence. this 0-0 draw kept the algarvean side in mid table and, more importantly, if the team continues to play with such flair and passion then the crowds will soon be beating a path to the Jose arcanjo stadium.

Forcing a shot

W hen you go out to force a shot – and every player likes to think he is capable of playing an extra long one – what do you do? clench your teeth, blow out your cheeks, clutch the club more firmly and swing faster? throw yourself at it in fact. What actually happens is that everything goes faster except the club head and you miss the centre of the back of the ball with the centre of the clubface. You “miscue” the Fewshot.players have extra yards up their sleeve that they can control, because they generally build up their game on their fastest hit: thus they have no real reserve. Occasionally champions, in the excitement of the day, summon more nervous energy, and “let one fly” but they have their own pet formula for that. When i want to take a risk i wind up more and loosen my hands a bit. Others may use a more pronounced lateral sway and work up an extra mile or two per hour of club head speed. these extra bits to be added to any swing mean taking a risk, for golfers of all classes. it is really not worth it to force a shot. Play a full shot normally, yes, but better still, even over-club and try for a 100 per cent true impact on shots to the pin. any big shots i have played have been usually with a wider stance, a bigger pivot, and a determination to avoid tension. good golfing, Keith Clenched teeth & blown cheeks lightening swing tensed Grip No balance resultPoor
