I've been to the beach already this year, and it was delightful! This month we met with Loyd and Clare of Siesta campers, to find out what drove these modern day free spirits to settle down in the Algarve, and what unique experiences their camper van business can offer. We also introduce Eddie from the Hairy Lemon pub in Cabanas. We bring you a succulent steak dish from Mont' Belo, our handy guide of things to do in the area and health advice on spotting the signs of a stroke. All this along with our gardening, more.

FAST is the way to act when you suspect someone is having a stroke. Find out how!

STROKE? act FAST Facial weakness - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye Armdrooped?weakness - can the person raise both arms? Speech problems - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Time to call the ambulance - if any of these symptoms are present.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF STROKE? Each person is affected differently by a stroke and individual symptoms depend on which parts of the brain are affected and for what specific functions these parts of the brain are responsible. The severity of the symptoms depends on how much damage is done to the brain. The main symptoms of stroke are physical problems in one side of the body (numbness, weakness), drooping in one side of the face, speech problems (slurred speech, muddled words) and visual problems (blurred vision, loss of vision). In more serious cases, the person might lose consciousness. The onset of stroke symptoms is usually sudden. Strokes can occur while people are sleeping. If this happens, people can wake up with the Peoplesymptoms.mightalso experience longerterm effects such as psychological problems (for example, depression or difficulty controlling emotions), bowel or bladder problems (incontinence) and problems with swallowing. Other symptoms can include pain, dizziness and balance problems, memory problems, a loss of awareness of one side of the body (neglect) and fatigue.
WHAT CAUSES STROKES? Most strokes are caused by damaged arteries in the same way that damaged arteries in the heart can cause heart attacks. Our arteries tend to harden, narrow and weaken as we get older but people with high blood pressure, smokers, people with high cholesterol, and people with heart disease or diabetes (or a family history of heart disease or diabetes) are at an increased risk. Ischaemic strokes are caused by blockages (usually blood clots) in one of the arteries supplying the Haemorrhagicbrain. strokes are caused by one of the blood vessels supplying the brain bursting and causing a bleed. The most common cause is high blood pressure which damages and weakens the arteries making
WHAT IS A STROKE? A stroke is a disruption in the blood supply to the brain. Most strokes are caused by blockages (usually blood clots) disrupting the brain’s blood supply. These are called ischaemic strokes. Some strokes are caused by bleeds. These are called haemorrhagic strokes. The brain depends on a supply of blood for the oxygen and nutrients it requires to function properly. When the blood supply is disrupted, brain cells are starved of oxygen and nutrients. This causes damage to the brain tissue. Stroke is a medical emergency. If you suspect someone is having a stroke, call for an ambulance immediately. Strokes can affect people of any age but are more common in older people. Some people have a temporary blockage in the blood supply to their brain which clears of its own accord, quickly and before any lasting damage to the brain is done. This is called a transient ischaemic attack (TIA).

RECOVERY Time is of the essence, remember F A S T . Most people tend to make their best recovery in the first few weeks and months after the stroke but people can continue to recover slowly over months and even years. WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?
Neuromuscular: In this type of scoliosis, there is a problem when the bones of the spine are formed. Either the bones of the spine fail to form completely or they fail to separate from each other during fetal development. This type of scoliosis develops in people with other disorders, including birth defects, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, or Marfan's disease. People with these conditions often develop a long C-shaped curve and have weak muscles that are unable to hold them up straight. If the curve is present at birth, it is called congenital. This type of scoliosis is often much more severe and needs more aggressive treatment than other forms of scoliosis.
www.eastalgarvemag.com10 Health
S coliosis is a threedimensional deviation of the spinal column which means that apart from the column shift to one side, it also rotates and tilts. Scoliosis affects about 2% of females and 0.5% of males. In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown (idiopathic). More than 80% of people with scoliosis have idiopathic scoliosis, and the majority of those are adolescent girls. There are three other main types of Functional:scoliosis:In this type of scoliosis, the spine is normal, but an abnormal curve develops because of a problem somewhere else in the body. This could be caused by one leg being shorter than the other or by muscle spasms in the back.
People who have had a stroke are at an increased risk of further strokes so it is important to try to reduce this risk. If your stroke was ischaemic you might be given medication to thin your blood and make it less sticky to reduce your risk of blood clots. If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol you might be given medication to reduce and control your levels. A small number of people having ischaemic strokes might benefit from a treatment called thrombolysis which dissolves the clot blocking an artery. This treatment needs to be given within a short period of time after the onset of symptoms (within three hours). It can significantly reduce the effects of the stroke but it is not available in all hospitals and is not suitable for everyone. If you have a partial blockage in your carotid arteries you might benefit from surgery to clear it. This operation is called a carotid endarterectomy.
Duarte from Fisioclube Fuzeta tells us the tell-tale signs and treatment of four types of Scoliosis.
Curvature of the Spine; Scoliosis them more likely to tear. Serious head injuries can also cause haemorrhagic strokes. Tests and investigations The key test for stroke is a brain scan. You might have a CT (Computerised Tomography) scan or an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan. Your scan results can show whether your stroke is ischaemic or haemorrhagic. This is important because the treatments differ depending on the type of Youstroke.might also have an ultrasound test to check for any blockages in the main arteries in your neck which supply your brain with blood (the carotid arteries). Your blood pressure will be checked, you will have blood tests to check your cholesterol and glucose levels, and other tests to check your heart.

Degenerative: Unlike the other forms of scoliosis that are found in children and teens, degenerative scoliosis occurs in adults. It is caused by changes in the spine due to arthritis known as spondylosis. Weakening of the normal ligaments and other soft tissues of the spine combined with abnormal bone spurs can lead to an abnormal curvature of the spine. The spine can also be affected by osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures, and disc degeneration.
11www.eastalgarvemag.com
What are the symptoms and signs of scoliosis? The most common symptom of scoliosis is an abnormal curve of the spine. Often this is a mild change and may be first noticed by a friend or family member. The change in the curve of the spine typically occurs very slowly so it is easy to miss until it becomes more severe. It can also be found on a routine school screening examination for scoliosis. Those affected may notice that their clothes do not fit as they did previously or that pant legs are longer on one side that the other. Scoliosis may cause the head to appear off center or one hip or shoulder to be higher than the opposite side. You may have a more obvious curve on one side of the rib cage on your back from twisting of the vertebrae and ribs. In most cases, scoliosis is not painful, but there are certain types of scoliosis than can cause back pain. How is scoliosis diagnosed? If you think you have scoliosis, you should see your doctor, physiotherapist or expert on postural correction as soon as possible for an examination. The physical examination involves looking at the curve of the spine from the sides, front, and back. The person will be asked to undress from the waist up to better identify any abnormal curves. The person will then bend over trying to touch their toes. This position can make the curve more obvious. The doctor will also look at the symmetry of the body to see if the hips and shoulders are at the same height. Can also be diagnosed by X-ray. The ideal age to diagnose and treatment is before puberty. What is the treatment for scoliosis? Treatment of scoliosis is based on the severity of the curve and the chances of the curve getting worse. Certain types of scoliosis have a greater chance of getting worse, so the type of scoliosis also helps to determine the proper treatment. In less severe cases are treated with physiotherapy (notably global postural reeducation) bracing, posture insoles, swimming, yoga, pilates. More severe cases are treated with surgery. If you suspect any changes in your alignment, do not wait. The longer you wait, the worse the prognosis. Consult an expert on postural correction. third third

H oratio and Marcellus (aka Gert and Edie) face the ghost of Hamlet’s father - with the help of a partisan (What’s a partisan? I dunno - some sort of bird? - and a partisan in a pear tree?) - in Aperitivo Performance Group’s often hilarious version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Aperitivo’s Hamletarama! has the two cleaning ladies substituting for missing actors in this brilliant, funny and thought-provoking version of the classic tale. Shakespeare buffs will like it because there has been little tampering with the famous speeches; nonShakespeare fans will like it because it is ripping yarn, with ghosts, girls and murders galore. Everything that to modern audiences could be a little slow has been ruthlessly stripped out (Politics! - I hate Politics, leave it out!). The comedy level has been increased with the addition of a Pantomime Boy Hamlet and his Cat as well as the two charladies, and audiences are invited to consider various interpretations of the world-famous play as Hamletarama! contains no less than five Hamlets and three Ophelias. The piece is staged “in the round” to ensure that all the audience gets not only a good view, but also feels as if they are part of the Hamletarama Experience. Hamletarama! will be performed at the Museum, São Brás on Friday March 16th at 13.30 and 19.30, Saturday March 17th at 19.30, tickets 10€, 8€ for members, and at the Casa do Povo in Moncarapacho on Sunday 18th March at 21.00. aving spent many years of exploring and working all over Europe Loyd and Clare first came to Portugal when they were involved in promotional work for Superbock 12 years ago. During the period that followed they found themselves returning again and again to the Algarve. They were attracted by its unspoiled natural beauty and gentle pace of life and it easily become a home for them and their young family. Loyd's childhood summer holidays had rolled by in a 1970's VW campervan and the sense of freedom that comes with this type of travelling had stayed with him. This combined with his life long passion for classic cars and his experience in restoring them to create "Siesta Campers". Siesta Campers have a fleet of 5 impeccably and lovingly restored 1970's campers which they rent out all year round for people to go and adventure in. Their clients are a mixture of nationalities. They also have a wide range of ages and types varying from families with young babies on their first holiday together, VW fanatics, surfers, older couples and honeymooners. The campers all have different names (Bubble, Apple, Fern, Martha and Saffron) and different personalities and styles to go with them. There's a camper to suit everyone! Their origins are diverse too; from being imported from America to being saved, recycled and restored from an untimely end in a scrap yard. "We probably have equal requests for each van" says Clare, "our clients always fall in love with them and return very happy and revitalized. It is a perfect and idyllic way to explore the real Algarve, to escape all the usual tourist traps and discover the spacious, peaceful natural beauty to be found here." Their clients also enjoy the positive attention the

They all have full cooking facilities, a gas hob, fridge and all kitchen utensils, comfy bedding, outside chairs and table, sunshades, solar showers, barbeques, maps, ideas and even some games. This month we met up with Eddie and his staff, who opened their doors in May 2011. Eddie, originally from Dublin, moved to London in 1985, where he was a service manager for BMW for 20 years. He has spent his holidays in the Algarve almost every year since 1986, mainly in the West and the North, and in 2003 he moved to Cabanas and decided to build a new life there. He had been involved in property management and building whilst based in UK and in 2004 he was asked to survey the pool area adjacent to the apartments and the main building in Conceição. The building, had laid empty since it was built in 2006, and as Eddie looked into the possibility of opening it himself, he found that the necessary “licences were already in place for the pool and restaurant and bar area to operate in conjunction with each other”. It took a year to re instate them and once this had been done, Eddie and his family set about the renovation, completely fitting the kitchen and the modern bar, as well as creating the attractive restaurant area, taking three months of hard work to complete. The bar is home to “The Hairy Lemon Golf Society” which offers fantastic deals for the golfers out there. After joining, for a minimum fee, you can meet up with other fellow members, play each Sunday, and for example, enjoy 18 holes at the stunning Esuri Golf course followed by a full 3 course Sunday Roast back at the restaurant, superb value at only

W hat do Liverpool and SC Olhanense football teams have in common? At the end of February both were seventh in the Premier League of their respective countries and fighting to qualify for next season’s UEFA Europa League. Whilst Manchester City has a playing budget of €350m, Porto €95m, Benfica €50m & Sporting €40, the Algarve’s only top flight team has a meagre budget of just €1.4m! No wonder the fans are passionate and proud of their team’s achievements. Founded in 1912 in the small fishing town of Olhão, a few miles east of Faro, Sporting Clube Olhanense has a long and illustrious history. In 1922 the famous SL Benfica caused great interest when they played in Olhão for the first time beating the home team 5-3. In 1923, the club’s first official home, Estàdio Padinha, was inaugurated where the Ria Shopping Centre now stands. The stadium was named after Francisco Padinha, a local athlete of national fame who became a World season Olhanense won the Algarve Championship thus qualifying for the Campeonato de Portugal. They fought their way to the final where they recorded a famous victory over FC Porto. A member of that team was Raul Soares de Figueroa “Tamanqueiro” who remains to this day the most capped Olhanense player. He represented Portugal on eight occasions whilst wearing the Olhanense shirt and went on to make another nine appearances after his transfer to Benfica. Other famous players include Grazina, born in São Brás de Alportel in 1910 and who played his whole career with Olhanense from 1938 to his retirement in 1953. Probably one of the best players never to represent his country, he was a member of the Olhanense team that lost 1-0 to Sporting in the 1945 Cup Final (Taça de Portugal). Olhanense were international headlines in 1966 when he was electrocuted in a tragic accident at the age of twenty-six. Born in Olhão, Luciano made his first team debut in 1959 and went on to play over a hundred games for the Algarveans. Two years later, the promising youngster was signed by Benfica. But tragedy struck on the 5th December 1966 when seven players, the world famous Eusébio, Santana, Carmo Pais, Malta da Silva, Cavém, Jaime Graça & Luciano, were using the hydro-massage pool after training. An electrical malfunction caused a tremendous shock and Luciano was killed instantly. Due to the quick reactions of Malta da Silva, who jumped out of the bath and disconnected the electrical supply, the other players survived and made a full recovery. Cavém, also born on the Algarve at Vila Real de San. Antonio, only survived

Olhanense is one big family and the Expat Supporters Group has been welcomed into that family with open arms. The ad-hoc group has evolved over the past six years and is now an integral part of the club. With some 300+ members both in the Algarve and throughout Europe the group has a distinct image. Members of the group have travelled all over Portugal, and even as far as Madeira, following their team with ‘Os Gorilas’ and the clarinet playing Ferriera. Much media coverage has followed including several TV programmes which have resulted in more expats following the club. The Group produce a match day programme in English and an annual calendar of fixtures funded by local British businesses which have helped to increase the visibility of Olhanense in the region. Fund-raising has also resulted in monies being donated to various international disaster appeals including the Madeira floods in 2009. The Group also purchased a new outfit for the Algarve’s most popular bird ‘Moss the Stork’. The distinctive mascot visits many children’s homes, orphanages, hospitals and schools where he is extremely popular. On match days the fans meet in cafes and bars with the most famous being the Sete Estrelas Bar. The ‘Seven Stars’ is situated in a side street close to the market and has unique items of memorabilia adorning the walls and the large oak wine barrels behind the bar. The fiercely loyal Portuguese fans are a credit to the club and the expat fans feel very privileged to have been so warmly welcomed into their midst.
because of his perfect physical fitness. Luciano’s funeral was the largest ever seen in the Algarve and a street near the present José Arcanjo stadium bears his name. There is a permanent exhibition of memorabilia dedicated to Luciano at the Casa Do Benfica Cafe, in Olhão. In 1973 Premier League status was regained but only for two seasons. From 1975 Olhanense were in the 2nd Division or lower but in 2009 all that was to change. Under the strong leadership of President Isodoro Sousa and managed by Jorge Costa, captain of Porto under Jose Mourinho when they won the European Champions League in 2004, the team won the 2nd Division Championship. Victory at Gondomar in May ensured not only promotion but the Liga Vitalis title. The fans went wild and celebrations went on for several weeks. Over €900,000 was spent on upgrading the José Arcanjo Stadium and work continues to this day to improve the facilities. It is planned to open a Trophy Museum, to house the thousands of awards and historical photographs & documents, to coincide with the club’s centenary celebrations at the end of April. Results this season have included draws with last season’s UEFA Europa League Champions FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon. There is no doubt that this small provincial town and its football team will rightly be able to celebrate a 100 years of sporting excellence Being a supporter of SC Olhanense is about more than just football.

A s property prices have fallen between 30% to 35% over the past three years and average time to sell a property increased significantly, using your existing home as part payment for a new one could be an option. Whether you are looking to upgrade or downsize, a part exchange could be the key to the door of your new home and allow you to move on with your life in this incredibly slow market.
Just as in any other country, Portugal allows you to trade in your home as part payment for your new home. If you are looking to upgrade, there is a significant advantage with regards to the property transfer tax (called IMT in Portugal). Instead of paying IMT over the full purchase price, IMT is in case of a part-exchange transaction only to be paid over the difference in value. Let us assume an owner of a twobedroom apartment is looking to purchase a villa. If the agreed value of the apartment is 170.000€ (in addition to the cash component) and the agreed price for the villa is a 300.000€, you only pay IMT over the difference which in this example a 130.000€. For the vendor of the higher valued property, there is no property transfer tax to be paid at Whenall. the declared value of both properties is exactly the same for the transaction, there is no IMT to be paid at all. Be aware that if the declared value of both properties is

actually lower than the evaluation of the property done by local Finance department (called Valor Patrimonial), the calculation will take place over the values of the Valor Patrimonial and existing differences between them. A part-exchange of a property, regardless whether this involves a resale or newly built one from a constructor, does not mean that you cannot negotiate on the price of both the property you are buying and the one you are trading in. However, only when both buyer and vendor take a rational approach to establishing transaction values can a deal be made. Although it has not been common practice in the Algarve to partexchange properties during the past decade, recently there has been more interest due to a slow market. Therefore if this could be of interest to you, contact your estate agent and inform them that you would consider a part-exchange and let them know what your requirements Lastly, are. if an estate agent has mediated the part-exchange transaction, commission is paid by the vendor of the higher valued property over the total transaction value (both the house price and cash component).

For much of this book i was never sure if it was a thriller or a tale of life in an Italian American community in 70s New England. It turned out to be a clever combination of both. The story revolves around 12 year old Nunzio and his family run salvage business. Summer holidays revolve around helping dad tow cars and rummaging around in them for hidden treasures behind the seats and in the boot. All this comes to an end when one day he discovers a body in the boot of an old Pontiac. After the discovery the body is not mentioned again for several chapters as we sidetrack into life in Little Italy and Nunzios tale is dismissed. The crushing of the car at the yard does not help him either as the evidence is destroyed. A tale of family life, beach picnics, old uncles and local characters are introduced and you can almost smell the tomato and basil as you turn the pages. What this does is allow the book to introduce some main players via gentle introductions before returning to Nunzio and the body. As with all italian based stories, tales of mob involvement soon surface and the body becomes linked to the settling of old debts as far back as paying for passage to the promised land. With the help of his brother and ex cop uncle who just happens to be a quadriplegic with a trained monkey for an assistant, score 10/10 for originality, Nunzio sets out to prove what he saw. It becomes apparent that Nunzio's family have a lot of involvement and these things never go away. Nunzio cant go to his father for help as his brother and uncle have no relationship with him so the three of them go at it with lots of danger. Nunzios mob uncles play their hand to protect the old ways and the book comes together nicely. A fast paced ending sees the case solved and Nunzio's father stepping in to save the day and bring the family back together at the expense of other "family" ties. The author has written several screenplays and directed eight major films to date. I think he should consider writing a cook book as I could taste Italy as he describes Italian life throughout this novel.

If roots are growing through the drainage holes or are seen at the soil surface, the plant has probably outgrown its pot. If you choose this plant, special care will be needed when transplanting into a larger pot. If you are unfamiliar with the plant, a proper label will be important too.

Plant quality and guarantees, along with price are important factors to consider when making a purchase. Quality There are several things to look for when shopping for a healthy plant. Begin by inspecting the leaves carefully. They should have the right colour, shape and size and be free of blemishes or brown edges. Also, the lower leaves should not be pale or yellow. A good specimen should not look leggy or sparse. It should have a good, balanced shape and not to top Lookheavy.closely at stems and leaves for any signs of insects or disease. Often, they have been grown in greenhouse conditions or even outdoors in southern climates. If plants have not been acclimatized, they may go through a period of shock. Often, plants drop some leaves or some leaves may yellow, when first brought into a new environment. This adjustment period should not last more than a few weeks. During this time, keep the plant relatively cool to help minimize water loss through its leaves. Check the soil regularly to determine when to water. Also, do not fertilize at this time, since the plant is adjusting to lower light and humidity conditions. Houseplant Needs Foliage plants can be a beautiful addition to a home or office. They are often grown for their attractive foliage, since most would require greenhouse conditions to produce Severalflowers. factors influence your success with indoor plants. The key factors for plant growth are light, temperature, humidity, and water. Take time to read about their individual requirements and then try to match their needs to your indoor setting. Proper Light Light is essential for plant growth and can be one of the most limiting factors for success with houseplants. Both the amount and the quality of light are important. Light intensity refers to brightness and is measured in foot-candles, which is defined as the amount of light that one candle produces, measured one foot away. Outdoors, the amount of sunlight that is cast may be 10,000 - 12,000 footcandles. Indoors, the amount of light that enters the room is only a small amount. While most plants will perform best with bright light

Several factors can influence your light intensity and duration. For example, the sun is higher on the horizon in the winter (increasing the brightness indoors) and lower on the horizon in the summer (decreasing the brightness indoors); surrounding trees and shrubs may block sunlight with their leaves in summer, but allow for more light during the winter after their leaves have fallen off. Light duration refers to the number of hours of light that falls on a plant in 24 hours. In low light conditions, plants can benefit from increasing the duration of light. Duration of 14 - 16 hours is sufficient. Do not expose plants to more than 16 hours of light since they need a rest period too. Also, be aware that flowering response in some plants is influenced by daylength and should be considered when supplementing the available Lightlight. quality refers to the wavelengths of light. Plants need blue and red wavelengths for photosynthesis. For flowering, they also need infrared light. Temperature Most foliage plants prefer day temperatures between 65 degrees and 75 degrees with night temperatures usually 5 to 10 degrees lower. Avoid extreme temperature changes, such as cold and hot air blasts from windows, radiators, heating and air conditioning vents. Take special care near cold window panes too. Cold glass can damage foliage. Water Needs How much water a plant needs is influenced by several factors. Not only is the individual plant size and species important, but also the growing conditions. Light, temperature, humidity, container type, container size, and finally soil type all influence the speed of growth and therefore the amount of water needed. It is best to look up individual plant types for their watering needs. Typically, you will see the following descriptions under water requirements: plants enjoy constantly moist, but not soggy wet soil; plants prefer to have soil allowed to dry moderately between watering; or plants prefer very slightly moist soil at all times. The succulents and cacti have differing needs during their growth cycle. Humidity During the winter, most homes have less than 30 percent humidity and some houseplants may suffer. Humidity can be increased with a humidifier. Setting plants on pebbles in a water-filled tray increase humidity too. Make sure the pots are not sitting directly in water. Another technique is to group plants together which improves the humidity immediately surrounding them.

Pruning
Tinyspray.limpet-like bugs on stems or leaves of plants are a sign of sapsucking scale insect. Rub off by hand with a piece of cotton wool. Fine webbing at the tips of plants and yellow speckling on leaves is a symptom of tiny red spider mites. They thrive in a warm, dry atmosphere - cut off the affected parts and mist around the plant to prevent another outbreak.
When moving plants into bigger pots, add a few granules of slowrelease fertiliser to the compost, but follow the manufacturer's guidelines to avoid overfeeding.
Most plants are easy to look after.
Many plants will grow without feeding, but flowering plants are very hungry and will do best when given a weekly dose of liquid feed.

Most of these landscapes alternate between rough cliffs and fine sand beaches; the re gion of the Algarve is recognized for its tourist-friendly sand beaches, while at the same time its steep coastlines around Cape St. Vincent is well known for steep and fore boding cliffs. An interesting feature of the Portuguese coast is Ria For mosa with some sandy islands and a mild and pleasant climate char acterized by warm but not very hot summers and generally mild winters. Since the 16th century, this formation of narrow headlands formed a lagoon, that, due to its characteristics al lowed the formation and production of salt. It was also recognized by the Romans, whose forces exported its salt to Rome (then seen as a pre cious resource). The Azores are also sprinkled with both alternating black sand and boulder-lined beaches, with only a rare exception is their a white sand beach (such as on the island of San ta Maria in Almagreira. Wild Life in the Algarve
Near Rivers, lakes and ponds wild turtles of the species “European Pond Terrapin” can be seen. Terrapins that are most often sold in shops are the red-eared sliders, an exotic species native to Florida and the Mississippi river basin. This species is very robust and easy to breed so when owning a terrapin came into fashion, pet shops saw a great opportunity. Unfortunately, the red-eared slider interferes with the two native species in the wild, the Mediterranean turtle and the European pond turtle.

T he Algarve is particularly well known for its nu merous bird species, storks, hoopoe, blackbirds, nightingales, gulls, flamingos, bee eaters and many more. You can also watch dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean on one of the boat trips and tours avail able in the Algarve. Rabbits and partridges are com mon, but wild boar and other species are rare as a result of the fact that hunting is very popular in the Algarve. Caméléons can also be detected and observed in many places in the Algarve, but please be aware that it is ille gal to catch them and take them home as pets. Geckos are very common in the Algarve as well. They are similar to lizards, but not as fast. The Gecko is normally hiding under stones and other places at day time and is often seen darting around the outside walls of houses in the countryside at night when the gecko goes hunting in sects. They grow up to 16 cm long and "don't bite" – they are completely harmless. Also in the Algarve, you may detect snakes - but these are usually non-toxic vipers.

You may end up keeping some of your existing investments, but this should be a conscious decision as part of your overall Ifportfolio.youalready have a considered investment strategy, or once you set one up, it is important to have periodic reviews. If your strategy was established with the help of a wealth manager he should do this for you, if not consider meeting with a new adviser who will. This should be done at least once a year, unless your circumstances significantly change in the meantime. During the review consider the following: Have your circumstances changed? Are your objectives the same as they were? Has your time horizon shortened or increased? Has your attitude to risk changed? Have you got more capital that you can now invest? If anything has changed your portfolio may need to be amended to reflect your change in circumstances. Your personal situation is not the only reason why you need to review your portfolio regularly. Just as important is the need to re-balance your assets. Your asset allocation (x% in developed markets shares, x% in emerging markets, x% in fixed interest
How did you come to have your current portfolio? Many people have ended up with their current portfolio almost accidentally. For example, they bought some shares in a promising company; then they obtained other shares from the company they worked for; then they bought a fund because they saw it advertised and it seemed a good opportunity; then they moved cash into a fixed term deposit account because the interest rate was competitive at the time, etc etc.
W hen was the last time you reviewed your investment portfolio? I mean, sat down and looked at all the assets you own, whether individual shares, funds, investment wrappers, property, cash holdings etc, at the same time considering your current circumstances, objectives and time horizon, not to mention today’s investment climate?

Does this sound familiar? Successful investment management is about managing risk versus return. Diversification and the right balance between assets are key. The problem with the above scenario is that your portfolio could easily have limited diversification and be unbalanced. It may be riskier than you realise – and riskier than it need be to meet your objectives. Alternatively, if most of the savings you are relying on in retirement are held in bank accounts, your real returns may be insufficient to keep pace with inflation and you lose spending power each year. Your portfolio may also not be targeted to your needs. For example, many retired people take income from their investments, but if your portfolio does not generate a natural income you could have to withdraw capital. This would leave you with less capital working to provide income and growth in future or to tap into when needed. You may have to sell at a loss if you need income when asset values have fallen. When buying investments and building a portfolio, you should ideally establish the basics before you purchase anything or move capital around. These are your investment objectives, circumstances, investment time horizons, attitude to risk etc. Any assets you By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent.

However, as some assets rise in value, in varying degrees, and others may have fallen, the asset allocation will no longer match what you started with. Your portfolio could now be much riskier than the one you started with, even though you have not actually changed anything. In this case it will be time to sell some assets and buy others to re-establish your original weightings, and your wealth manager should advise you on this.
Regular re-balancing helps to control risk and tends to have a positive effect on portfolio performance. Last but certainly not least, if you have bought investments here and there and without a strategy in place, they probably are not tax efficient. With today’s high taxes you will not want to lose any more of your income or gains to tax than you absolutely have to. Closed Wednesdays. Supporters were resigned to losing Portugal Under 21 international Salvador Agra when he completed his €200,000 move to Spanish La Liga side Real Betis but the good news was he would stay with Olhanense until the end of the season. So a thousand fans were in festive mood as they made the three hour trip north to take on their nearer league rivals Vitória de Setúbal. The great bond of friendship shared between the fishing communities of Olhão and Setúbal was highlighted as the supporters danced, sang and enjoyed a BBQ in the shadow of the Estádio do Bonfim. This was be to a day of mixed emotions. 2-0 down after only nine minutes, a penalty conceded by Toy and an own goal from Fernando Alexandre, and the home side were well on their way to their first league victory since September. But new manager Sérgio Conceição and his team are made of sterner stuff these days and with half-an-hour on the clock they had levelled the score with a brace of goals from Yontcha. Ten minutes from time and Ismaily snatched the winner to record a remarkable comeback. Next it was Rio Ave at home and Olhanense were a goal down after just 90 seconds! The crowd got agitated as the game became very physical with the referee failing to penalise a series of fouls especially on Olhanense’s tricky wingman Salvador Agra. A second goal just before the break secured Rio Ave their first away victory of the campaign. In the three years since the Olhanense returned to the top flight they have won all three away games against the Vila do Conde side but failed to win at home! After the final whistle Sérgio Conceição approached referee Hélder Malheiro, “I asked him if he could explain why he failed to protect my players in accordance with the laws of the game but he immediately sent me from the field of play.” The league Disciplinary Committee subsequently banned the young manager for ten days and fined him €1500. Away at Feirense, assistant coach Jorge Rosario took charge in place of the suspended Sérgio Conceição. A goal conceded midway through the first-half looked likely to be decisive. But a spirited fight-back in the second period saw Maurício and Dady have efforts well saved and in the final five minutes of normal time Rui Duarte, Salvador Agra and Mexer all went close. In the 3rd minute of added-on time André Pinto deservedly snatched the equaliser when he slotted home from close range. The FC Porto loanee, who has been linked with a summer move to Blackburn Rovers, has been in outstanding form this season. The following week Pinto was to turn from hero to villain when he gave away a penalty near the end of the game with Gil Vicente.

The Republic of Ireland Under-17s football squad, seven of whom are with English Premier League clubs, recently enjoyed a training camp at the Colina Verde Golf & Sports Resort at Maragota near Moncarapacho. Coach John Morling was delighted, "This week in the Algarve has been fantastic for the players and staff because we've got some important work done ahead of the Under-17 UEFA European Championship qualifiers in the Netherlands in March. We've had two matches against decent opposition along with a programme of training sessions at this superb facility here in the east Algarve”.
FUN & FRIENDSHIP In 1943, on the occasion of V.Setúbal’s first Portugal Cup Final, thousands of their fans invaded Lisbon and, although the team lost 5-1 to Benfica, celebrated in an emotional demonstration of fair play. In the next day's press, the people from Setúbal were nicknamed 8º Exército (the 8th Army) in comparison with the British Eighth Army and its World War II exploits in Africa under Field Marshal Montgomery which were followed with great enthusiasm by the Portuguese people. Referring to this in the late 1990s, the first official supporters' association was baptized VIII Exército. They show great dedication to the club and are recognized as one of the most orderly groups in Portugal.
Fifty percent of Portugal’s top flight professional soccer league are in arrears in the payment of wages, it was reported in the daily paper Correio da Manhã recently. One of the top three clubs, Sporting Lisbon, was rumoured to be having difficulties in meeting their players wages for January. V. Guimarães & V. Setúbal, are the worst case scenarios being three months in arrears. SC Olhanense made the following statement, "The Sporting Club Olhanense denies the news published by the daily newspaper Correio da Manhã that falsely states that wages are two months in arrears. The salaries of the professional soccer squad, for the month of December have been properly settled. Having a history of strict adherence to institutional and financial management of the Sporting Club Olhanense we are saddened that the good name of the institution is placed in question by a newspaper that has an obligation to properly inform the public. CELTIC KEEN ON PROMISING YOUNGSTER Glasgow Celtic may fork out €600,000 to sign Olhanense’s young striker Edinho Junior. The 17-yearold impressed Celtic boss Neil Lennon during a two week trial at Celtic Park last month. "This is a big chance for me and I'm optimistic but I have to wait on Celtic's decision," Edinho Junior told the Scottish Daily Record. Edinho Junior’s father played for Olhanense, where he scored 69 goals in 139 games, and also spent time with Bradford City and Dunfermline Athletic. Edinho was a firm favourite at Bradford City and their fans website ‘Boy from Brazil’ is named in his honour.

Name: Keith Ashdown Title: P.G.A. Resident professional Pro since: 1964 Born: Crowborough, Sussex, U.K. Tournament History: •Winner of more than 100 professional golf tournaments in Europe.
This months top tip from Keith Ashdown, how best to play this Par 3, 171m hole Pro stats
•Represented G.B. and Ireland in the P.G.A. Cup against the U.S.A.
•16 Hole in ones (4 on par 4’s)
•Course record holder at Benamor, 65 (6 under par), although has scored 60 strokes on 3 occasions (Not counted as a course record as they were not scored in a professional competition)
•European tour player member 1968 - 82
B enamor Golf is not a particularly long course at 5,500 metres, but the par 3’s here are no push over. We have 5, Par 3’s, and hole 17 is a demanding hole played slightly uphill, it plays its full length of 171m. A large lake awaits a miss hit tee shot, and 2 large bunkers left and right of green catch many balls. For most golfers a fairway wood or long iron is required, and a solid strike will give you a chance to make your Par, or maybe a birdie. Good luck, Keith
