Welcome to the April edition. Easter holidays survived, thanks mainly to the facilities at the library in Tavira. My children had great fun there, meeting friends, using the computer, watching films, playing games, and of course, reading. Thanks to the very friendly, helpful librarians. We have also been busy meeting people and visiting new places to tell you about. We took a boat tour of the Ria Formosa islands, a truly amazing day, and also caught up with Eduardo and Nicole from Casa do Polvo Tasquinha. Our very own Richie Bassett has embarked on a new business venture, Bar Toque, in Tavira; find out how it began and the plans for the new establishment. All this plus our regular including Health, Golf local Sports from Chris Wright. I hope you enjoy this issue.

Agroup from tavira town hall recently visited the eastern coast of the us, by invitation of the us embassy in lisbon, in order to promote the municipality’s business parks and the Portuguese candidacy for the mediterranean diet to be recognised by unescO. during the six day trip that integrated a committee of 20 Portuguese businesses and public entities, aside from taking part in the opening session of the new York stock exchange, a great number of contacts were also made with private investors and institutions in new Jersey, new York and miami.

“We highlight the participation of the ambassadors to Portugal in the us, nuno brito, and to the us in lisbon, allan Katz, as well as the mayor of newark, cory booker, who were fundamental for the contacts that have led to a partnership with the new Jersey institute of technology (nJit), that was the original reason for this trip, and is studying the installation of a business incubator and business centre in tavira,” said a spokesman from tavira town hall on monday. the group also visited a few “success stories” of Portuguese businesses and the luso-american chamber of commerce in the state of new Jersey, which is home to one of the largest Portuguese communities in the us. these visits were aimed at establishing partnerships to support the move and establishment of businesses in the south of Portugal. a meeting was also held with the sub-secretary for the us department of commerce, Francisco sanchez in miami, Florida, as well as meetings with the mayor of miami-dade carlos Gimenez and the superintendent of schools in that area, the lusoamerican alberto carvalho.

“a number of initiatives to be developed in the coming future were agreed, from the promotion of business parks in tavira, to the promotion of Portugal’s candidacy for the mediterranean diet to recognised as intangible cultural human heritage,” said a spokesman from tavira town hall, adding that this is all part of “an international promotion strategy of tavira’s economic potential, of its cultural and natural values and the creation of businesses and quality jobs.”

From brushing their first tooth to their first trip to the dentist, here's how to take care of your children’s teeth.

• start brushing your baby's teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first milk tooth breaks through (usually at around six months, but it can be earlier or later). it's important to use a fluoride paste as this helps prevent and control tooth decay.

• use a mirror to help your child see exactly where the brush is cleaning their teeth.

•decay-free:starttobrush your baby's gums with a soft toothbrush at bath time, or even let your baby have a go themselves as long as you supervise them. this establishes brushing their teeth as part of the washing routine.

• children under the age of three can use a smear of family toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm (parts per million) fluoride. toothpaste with less fluoride is not as effective at preventing decay. children between the ages of three and six should use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride. check the toothpaste packet for this information or ask your dentist.

• make sure your child doesn’t eat or lick the toothpaste from the tube.

• supervise tooth brushing until your child is seven or eight years old, either by brushing their teeth yourself or, if they brush their own teeth, by watching how they do it. From the age of seven or eight they should be able to brush their own teeth, but it’s still a good idea to watch them now and again to make sure they brush properly and for the whole two minutes.

• make tooth brushing as fun as possible, using an egg timer to time it for at least two minutes.

don't let children run around with a toothbrush in their mouth as they may damage their mouths or choke if they fall over.

• take your child to the dentist when they're as young as possible and at least once by the time they're two. this is so they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist. the dentist can help to prevent decay and identify any health problems at an early stage.

• When you visit the dentist, be positive about it and make the trip fun. this will stop your child worrying about future visits. nhs dental care for children is free.

• take your child with you when you go for your own dental check-up

The haveyourguideessentialtoensurechildrentheperfect teeth

• brush your child's teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, once just before bedtime and at least one other time during the day. encourage them to spit out excess toothpaste but not to rinse with lots of water.

A regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for good dental health. Follow these tips and you can help keep your kids' teeth

• Once you've established a good tooth-brushing routine at home, the next step is the first trip to the dentist. these tips can make this a lot easier:

• Guide your child's hand so they can feel the correct movement.

Just opening up the child's mouth for the dentist to take a look is useful practice for when they could benefit from future preventive care.

FluOride varniSh and FiSSure SealantS two quick and painless preventive treatments – fissure sealant and fluoride varnish – are available from your dentist, and sometimes from your child’s primary school. Fissure sealants can be done once your child’s permanent teeth have started to come through (usually at the age of about six or seven) to protect them from decay. this is where the chewing surfaces of the back teeth are covered with a special thin plastic coating to keep germs and food particles out of the grooves. the sealant can last for as long as 5 to 10 years. Fluoride varnish can be applied to both baby teeth and adult teeth. the process involves painting a varnish containing high levels of fluoride onto the surface of the tooth every six months to prevent decay. it works by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to adecay.skyour dentist if your child could benefit from fissure sealing or fluoride varnish

When Scars cause pain

Half a year ago my husband and I decided to move toPortugal. The main reason was the climate because ofmy artrose and other pain complaints. Here the climateshould be dryer then in The Netherlands. After a few months in the Algarve I went to DuarteArrais because I could hardly walk because of the painin my back. The neurologist in The Netherlands suggested(another) MRI-scan to see what could cause this pain.Mr. Arrais has another way of treating, totally differentthen all the other therapists I’ve seen in my 12 years-career of searching for relieve. It begins with the factthat he is not only treating the pain-area, but is looking atthe whole body, form the top of the head till the toes.He was the one to discover that the pain in my hip wasa result of operations I’ve had in the past in my belly.By coincident I read a scientific article this week thatspoke of these complications which, until now, were neverrecognised by doctors in hospitals. All together is was quite an experience to be treated formy back, my hip and my neck, and many other things Ididn’t even know I was suffering from! (bad foot, badAndfoot).the result is unbelievable! After a few weeks I couldwalk without my crutch (very strange after leaning on thatthing for so many years) and my back was so much better. And now, after only 2 months of treatment, the pain inmy back and hip are almost gone! It seems to me like amiracle, but it’s just a case of listening to the patient, and treating the body as one whole thing. You can imagineI’m mister Arrais very gratefull.

Why? because you were probably brought up by parents who allowed you to live your life and grow up with the most amazing and incredible amount of danger going on all around you. What am i talking about? Well just consider the following; We are now told that even our very start in life was incredibly dangerous because all our baby cots and prams were covered with bright colored leadbased paint, there were no child proof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes we didn’t wear helmets - for the simple reason there were no such things. As children, we would happily ride in cars without seatbelts or air bags, and riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm sunny day was always a special treat. We used to drink ordinary water from the tap and the garden hose, and not from a bottle. We ate lots of cakes, wagon wheels and bread pudding, we put loads of butter and jam on our bread, and we drank oodles of cold fizzy drinks with lots of sugar in them - but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing and running about. Quite often we shared our drink with three or four of our friends, and we all happily drank from the same bottle, and surprise, surprise - no one actually died. We spent hours building go-carts out of scraps of wood and old pram wheels, and then we rode them down the hill as fast as we could, only to find we’d forgotten to include any brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learnt to solve that problem as well. We would leave home early in the morning and play all day, and as long as we were back home before the street lights came on mum and dad were happy, and yet nobody was able to reach us all day, because mobile phones hadn’t been invented. i suppose you could say we were all really deprived as children. Why? Well for a start we didn’t have Play Stations, Nintendo’s, X-Boxes or Wii’s, in fact we had no video or TV based games at all. there weren’t 300 different channels to choose from on satellite tv, and to be honest, some of us never even had a tv when we were children. We certainly had no dvd’s to watch, no mp3 players, no surround sound, no personal computers or laptops and there were definitely no internet chat rooms. instead we made friends, and then went outside into the fresh air to find them. We’d play together - football, cricket, tennis, rugby - it didn’t really matter what. We’d play cowboys and indians, swing on ropes, ride a baker’s tray down the hill and then sometimes we fell out of trees, cut ourselves and broke bones and teeth, but that was life and nobody sued anybody else - there were never any lawsuits from these accidents. Why? because they were just thataccidents! no one was to blame but us. sometimes we had really silly fights over nothing in particular and we’d occasionally punch each other and get a black eye, but we learned to get over it and move on. We made up all sorts of silly games with sticks and tennis balls and sometimes we were really disgusting and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we didn’t put out very many eyes with our sticks, and the worms didn’t live inside us forever. We never emailed or texted our friends because there was no such thing, so we either rode our bikes or walked to a friend's home, knocked on the door, or sometimes we simply rang the bell and just walked in and talked to them - face to face! Schools had rugby teams, football teams and cricket trials and not everyone got in the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with something in life called Sadly, disappointment.somestudents weren't as smart as others, so they failed their exams and some were even held back a year and had to repeat at the same standard just in order to pass. There were no league tables and exam results were never adjusted - for any reason whatsoever. All our actions were our own responsibility and consequences were expected. the idea of one of our parents bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. Parents in our day actually sided with the police if we’d done something wrong. Just imagine that! This current generation of over fifties has produced some of the best risktakers, entrepreneurs, problem solvers and inventors the world has ever seen, and the past fifty years has seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas. Generally speaking most of us over fifties had a lot of freedom as kids, we knew and experienced both success and failure, we took responsibility for our own actions, and if we failed - we learnt how to deal with it. if you’re over fifty - you’re one of those people! Congratulations & well done! By Trevor Holman

A message for the over fifties If you are reading this and like me, you’re over the age of fifty, then you must consider yourself to be extremely lucky to be alive.

Polako’s Bar, in Cabanas opened its doors just six weeks ago after a major refurbishment, to modernise and bring the back a fun and lively feel, whilst keeping all its original character. Steve, who now runs the spacious bar, shared with us the history leading up to him now managing Polako's. he had seen the old bar many years ago and had “always dreamt of running it himself”. through ambition and perseverance, he has now achieved his goal. in 1987 steve arrived in the east algarve having left Wandsworth london where he worked for the national trust as a specialist decorator on projects such as hampton court and impressively buckingham Palace. in search of something new, and a change of lifestyle, steve moved to manta rota, painting villas and houses and was then offered a job at Pedras da rainha in cabanas, as their entertainment’s manager. he went on to work at the Jolly sailor, in the bar, as well as organising their discos and karaoke, as well as the restaurant in Quinta velha. living and working in cabanas, steve has many friends locally, including John from casa algarvia and simon, soon to open alfresco, an english style supermarket. he also has his two sons, marcus 17, who was born here in Portugal, and Jordan 15 born in the uK. both his sons are fondly known by everyone in cabanas. steve was approached by luis the bar owner, who saw him as the ideal character to run the bar. he helped luis with the refurbishment and it now offers a large choice of beers, all international drinks, coffee, various snacks and tapas. Polako's is open every day, (except monday) from 9am till 2am, and until 3am on Friday and saturday. You can watch sky sports tv on either of the two screens, enjoy live music, the in-house dJ, or the music channels. appealing to all ages, locals and visitors from far and wide, they have created a hip and friendly place to meet. luis also owns the rota do Peixe restaurant in conceição de tavira, which offers good food and value with an all you can eat menu. We wish steve continued success in his new venture it was great to meet him. many thanks.

James is from the soviet union and served in the military as a colonel for an amazing 25 years. he was honoured by the Government with the “gold star” for his long service in afghanistan. he retired at the age of 42 and decided to start a new civilian life in a new country away from his native ukraine, where he met his wife valentyna. after travelling through europe to Germany, czechoslovakia, and spain, James and valentyna settled in the east algarve in 2000, and now have two daughters, silvia and Patricia both born here in Portugal. valentyna was a primary school teacher in her home country. she and James met duncan, a friend and confidant, whilst working in almancil for a large curtain maker. they spent six years enjoying working together, got on very well and decided to do the same after the company closed. James and valentyna embarked on launching their own shop in Olhão with the encouragement from duncan. it has now been open for 18 months and is tremendously busy, despite the current economic situation. they offer a full, complete service, as well as the important curtain

Specialist re-upholsterers and curtain makers James Eugénio based in Olhão, offer excellent service and quality with an extraordinary attention to detail.

T his month we had the great pleasure to be invited to Olhão to meet the delightful team behind James eugénio. last year we used their services ourselves, they completely transformed two very tired vintage chairs, which they immaculately refurbished and brought them back to their former glory.

W e are living in financial times. the way you organise your financial affairs can have a big impact over the years. Why are successful people better at achieving their goals and consistently outperforming others? One thing they have in common is that they tend to be surrounded by other successful people and having timely access to good, reliable information and act on it. We all know there are costs associated with owning a property. some costs you can avoid, some you can reduce and some you can not avoid such as council tax. the way you are organised can make a difference, especially when renting out your property. the attached overview describes two situations of non resident property ownership. the 1st is a family of four owning a villa, the 2nd a couple who own an apartment which they let. if you own a property and rent it out you need to pay tax in Portugal over the rental income. the tax filing is done once a year. however, the way you are organised can make a substantial difference to your income after tax (see overview). in order to comply with current legislation regarding short term holiday letting and to benefit from lower taxes, you need a rental license (licença de alojamento local). Just as important to know is that if structured properly, there is no further assessment on this income in your home country. in other words, the tax paid on rental income in Portugal is your final payment.

I 've recently reccomended trying new authors but i felt i had to mention this one by mr P. Yes, we know alex cross has been done to death. the womens murder club has run its course and we all doubt that he even writes any of these books. but, i must mention the private cseries.o-written with mark Pearson. it contains humour, a welcome addition to the patterson out pourings Private introduces us to a very exclusive detective agency. Powerful, politically connected and expensive. the london agency is run by dan carter, a former military policeman, not to be confused with Jack reacher. dans job is to protect an american student in london, hannah shapiro. the student in question already has a past shrouded in tragedy . she is here to forget but has it come back to haunt her. hannah is abducted but is her disappearance linked to the past or the present where young girls are turning up murdered in the capital. her schoolfriends witnessed a military style operation but can offer no clues. dan sets off in persuit, taunted along the way by emails and video from the abducters. his ex wife, a detective gets involved working the murdered girls cases and after they tumble back into bed they join forces. several twists bring hannah back but her father is missing after paying the kidnappers. the plots quickens and twists unfold but always in a clear precise way bring plots to a tconclusion.hebook is a cracking read and reminds me of a trevor eve shoestring character . i hope the humour stays in place as surely the character is going to figure big in coming books. i might browse the womens section next issue if i can get into character.

5scented-leaved pelargonium’s have small, delicate flowers with five petals, and fragrant foliage for which they are chiefly grown. they make excellent house plants and in warmer climates can be grown outside as bedding plants. Pelargonium’s produce flower buds all year. to keep them coming, just pinch out the old flower stems as they finish, and the plant will look after itself. Pelargonium’s can be grown in all types of well drained compost providing it is fresh and has been kept out of direct sunlight. care needs to be taken with watering, however as some composts can drain more freely than others and pelargonium’s need to be kept on the dry side until well established. they then may need plenty of watering during the growing season. Give pelargonium’s a weekly application of a high potash fertilizer. start these feeds three weeks from potting up and throughout the

2Zonal pelargonium’s have cute flowers but for these plants it’s really all about the foliage. they derive their name from the zones or bands of colour in the leaves. Zonal pelargonium’s produce so much foliage that a collection of dead leaves builds underneath. it’s a great idea just to remove those to stop the build up of fungal diseases such as botrytis.

1the ivy leaf pelargonium’s, which derive form a single distinctive species Pelargonium peltatum. it has a leaf that looks like english ivy and has a wonderful trailing habit, which makes the plant a useful groundcover, for spilling over embankments and the tops of big pots. they also have lovely, delicate flowers, often with intricate patterning. and like all pelargonium’s, benefit from a regular, light trimming every few months to keep them looking their best.

Plants to add colour to your garden

P elargoniums are tough, water wise plants that can provide a big splash of colour for minimal effort. You’ll probably know them as geraniums, and for a long time, they’ve been taken for granted, tucked away in neglected corners of the garden. but the need to conserve water has led to a resurgence of interest in this beautiful group of plants. early botanists lumped pelargonium’s together with a group of` similar plants already known as geraniums, and the name has stuck with gardeners ever since. there are Five maJOr typeS.

Small or large there is a Pelargonium to suit your garden

4dwarf and miniature zonal pelargonium’s are 13-20cm tall measured from soil to the top of the plant excluding stem length and flower. making them excellent plants for pots and window boxes. With the miniature zonal plants being floriferous with double and single blooms in a wide range of colours and having green to greenish-black leaves.

Oedema: Oedema is a condition were the leaves appear distorted or have small growths on the underside. this is common is greenhouse plants and several factors can cause this problem, including over-watering or high humidity. reduce watering and improved ventilation to remedy this problem. leaf spots: leaf spots are very common and widespread on pelargoniums. Possible causes are bacterial or fungal infections, resulting in lesions on the leaves and blackening of stems. the problem seems to be more apparent in over crowded greenhouses. avoid overwatering, damp conditions - improve ventilation. Snails/Slugs: snails and slugs cause slight damage to pelargoniums, mainly young plants, by feeding on the stems and young leaves. this occurs mostly during wet weather. damage can be similar to that cause by caterpillar’s snails and slugs leave a distinctive 'slime trail'. vulnerable or specimen plants should be protected by placing course grit or eggshells around the pot. alternatively use slug traps or pellets, sprinkled sparingly. pelargonium rust: this is a common and serious disease that affects pelargoniums, although it should not be confused with the rust that attacks fuchsias. the diseases spread to the uK, from its natural habitat in south africa, in the mid 1960's. this disease only affects Zonal pelargoniums. the visible signs are similar to that of fuchsia rust; brownish yellow pustules which develop on the underside of leaves. in severe attacks there may be leaf fall which seriously affects the plants health, resulting in lower flower production and fewer shoots. remove and destroy all infected leaves and spray with a systemic fungicide. Pelargonium rust is specific to that species and will not attack neighboring plants of any other genus, such as fuchsias. Caterpillars: during the summer months, when caterpillars are active, you will almost certainly find the distinct holes that have been eaten from the leaves - minus the slime trail! these are normally small holes, central to the leaf, although the edges are also eaten. some growing tips of shoots may be pulled together when the caterpillar uses silk to join the leaf tips - it can then feed in relative safety. remove and destroy any caterpillars that you may find or spray the plant with a systemic insecticide.

viruses: various viruses attack pelargonium’s but the commonest is leaf curl virus, although the leaves do not actually curl but are in fact pale yellowish spots, not to be confused with rust which attacks the underside. it is only later on in the attack that the leaves take on a curled appearance. symptoms of this disease usually appear in the spring on over-wintered plants and cuttings taken from last years plants. new foliage is rarely affected. cuttings that have been taken the previous autumn will show symptoms of this disease and may appear more intense in hot, dry weather. the problem is believed to be soil borne. all badly affected plants should be destroyed. Black leg: black leg is a disease, aptly named, which affects cuttings and young plants. the blackening of the stems spreads upwards from soil level and the affected tissue shrivels and looks pinched, while leaves wilt and shrivel. the plant or cuttings may also become unstable and are prone to fall over. eventually the plant is so weakened that it will die. careful husbandry can help eradicate this problem, make sure the pots and trays are cleaned and disinfected before use and compost can be sterilized. cuttings should only be taken from healthy disease free plants and dipped in a fungicide. clean water, tepid if used from a tap, should be used. avoid using water that has been stored in dirty rain butts. Keep plants well ventilated whilst in the greenhouse.

L ast month Tom Murphy dis cussed fossil fuels and his thoughts about nuclear power plants. We continue this inter view by looking at scientific develop ments and what they may have to of fer: Oilprice.com: I've come across many comments and articles online about human ingenuity and that we shouldn't be too concerned with peak oil and fossil fuel depletion because our scientists are surely close to an energy breakthrough. Although this thinking is dangerously naive I was hoping to get your opinion on which technology you think is closest to pro viding this possible breakthrough? tom murphy: I worry about the strength and pervasiveness of faith in science and technology to fix our problems. And I say this as a scientist who is no stranger to high-tech de sign and development. We deserve better than blind hope that someone somewhere will pull off a transfor mative energy miracle. Some things peak. We should acknowledge that once our inheritance is spent, we may not live like the kings we want to be. I can hope along with the rest of us that this isn't true. But I don't feel like gambling: I'm the type to cash out when I'm a bit ahead, rather than keep betting my purse that the next hand will hit paydirt. More concretely, I can say that most physicists I meet in departments around the country are not aware of peak oil and asso ciated challenges. Hardly anyone I meet is working on the problem. No one (i.e., funding) has told us this is a real problem that deserves our full at tention. And I sense that it would be political suicide to do so. So which technology do I think will save our ba con? Most ideas on the table provide electricity, which does not address our most critical need. As I said before, artificial photosynthesis hits the sweet spot, and batteries are tremendously important. But let's also prepare a plan B that may be less about technofixes and more about behaviors and attitudes. Oilprice.com: Giant batteries the size of a football pitch are being con structed in order to store energy from renewable sources and release it dur ing times of low power production, for a more consistent supply. Do you think this is the future for renewable energy, or would we be better served creating a giant grid, linking many dif ferent renewable sources together so that they can cover for each other?

tom murphy: Batteries work, we know. I think we absolutely should be gaining experience on the practi cal issues/economics of giant batter ies. Making large-scale storage more practical resolves the single-biggest technical barrier to widespread solar and wind deployment. I am sceptical about giant grids especially the global variety based on the simplistic notion that "It's always sunny somewhere." I am more attracted to resilient local so lutions. Transmission loss today tends to be less than 10% on an old, dumb grid. High-voltage DC would reduce this loss somewhat, and the science fiction superconducting grid would eliminate loss (until the inevitable cryo genic failure vaporizes the lines; and let's not ignore the considerable en ergy investment needed to keep the lines at cryogenic temperatures). On a moderately ambitious scale, a con tinental grid will reduce the need for storage, but it will not eliminate it. We still benefit from super-sized batteries. Oilprice.com: What do you think about the idea that it would be more useful improving the efficiency of cur rent power systems, rather than re searching new types of energy pro duction? tom murphy: Efficiency is a lovely thing, and it has always been seen as a lovely thing. Because of this, ef forts to improve efficiencies of the big stuff like power plants have been con tinuous. And we have seen improve ments at the level of 1% per year. In rare instances, One can get dramatic leaps via co-generation strategies, but that relies on power plants being situ ated near demand for waste heat. So realistically, I think incremental efficien cy improvement does not have nearly enough bite to "solve" our problem, As explained by renowned energy specialist Dr. Tom Murphy (part II of III)

Oilprice.com: What role do you think the smart grid has to play in the future? tom murphy: I'd sooner have smart people than a smart grid, deciding that it's in our collective interest to scale back energy use at a personal level. Failing that, a smart grid helps distribute demand in such a way that intermit tent renewables are more easily accommodated (using energy when it's available). Some things may work well like this, but I don't think this is a realistic way to hide variable energy supply from the consumer. They may be irked that they lose control over when the laundry decides to start - possibly resulting in clothes smelling of mildew, or that they are not present to fold clothes at 2 AM when the dryer is finished. Loss of control may not play well. If, instead, informed people accepted limitations of future en ergy supplies, and modified their own behaviour accord ingly under their own control, we would break the habit of people taking energy for granted: an attitude that the smart grid attempts to preserve. We want greater per sonal awareness of energy, not less.

Environment and in any case tends to be limited to factor-of-two level changes even in the long term. We need much more than that, in the end. I have found behavioural modification to be far more effective, achieving factors of 2, 3, 5, etc. in short order without grossly changing lifestyles.

Finance Bonds – Are They The Place To Be?

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent Blevins Franks Bonds generate a natural income, which means you can receive regular payments without touching the capital.

Government bonds - known as gilts in the uK or treasury notes/ bonds in the us. these are bonds issued by a government in its own currency. bonds issued by a national government in a foreign currency are known as sovereign bonds. investors consider these the safest type of bond, as governments of most modern developed countries are considered to be almost "riskfree" from a default point of view. corporate bonds – debt securities issued by companies and sold to investors. this is a major source of capital for many companies. the issuers are grouped by their credit rating. higher quality bonds are arec‘highriskperceivedthosegrade’‘investmentconsideredwhereaswithahigherarecalledyield.’orporatebondsconsidered higher risk than government bonds and as a result usually always have a higher rate of interest. these views are put forward for consideration purposes only as the suitability of any investment is dependent on the investment objectives, time horizon and attitude to risk of the investor. the value of investments can fall as well as rise as can the income arising from them. Past performance should not be seen as an indication of future performance. You should seek advice from an authorised financial such as blevins Franks Financial management ltd which is authorised and regulated by the uK Financial services authority for the conduct of investment and pension business. to keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website www.blevinsfranks. com

C orporate bonds play an integral part in many investment portfolios. this is partly as a diversification measure to lower overall risk, but also, in many cases, to provide regular income. bonds generate a natural income, which means you can receive regular payments without touching the capital. they also have the potential to provide capital growth over the longer-term (10 years or more). companies raise money by borrowing from investors over a fixed term and at a fixed rate of interest. a bond is usually issued at 100 Pounds or euros; pays a fixed level of interest each year and at maturity repays the original issue amount (provided it does not default). in the interim, the bond can be traded and as such it has a current market value. let’s say, for example, a bond is issued for a fixed term of five years with a fixed interest of 6% per annum. if its market value falls by 10% of what it was issued at, new investors can purchase the bond at that lower price with an effective yield of 6.67% p.a. at maturity it would have increased in value back to its maturity price, giving an additional capital gain of around 11%. Original investors would get back their original investment and would have received a yield of 6% p.a. bond fund managers actively buy and sell bonds where they see opportunities to make gains. it is possible for fund managers to make significant gains on some bonds if they buy them today and hold to tmaturity.hemajor risk to investing in bonds is that the issuing company defaults on either paying interest or capital at maturity. experienced bond fund managers evaluate companies closely, with the objective of staying away from companies which may default. different types of bonds

Paris - the front-runner for the French presidency, the socialist candidate François hollande, said that if elected he would ask other european leaders to renegotiate a fiscal treaty in order to promote tgrowth.hemain risk to europe now, mr. hollande said, "is that the european economy remains in a recession because not enough credit is provided to companies." he said that increased growth would help shrink debt, and that other european leaders were coming closer to his argument that increased growth is "ultimately a more effective way of reaching the same goal of controlling the debt and reducing deficits." he urged the european investment bank to place a greater emphasis on job creation in its allocation of financing, but there was little indication that Germany, the driving force behind the austerity-driven fiscal treaty agreed to last month, was warming to his ideas. this could be the best news yet for those of us that believe that the Primary dealers, also known as the tbtF (too big to fail) banks, have crucified the high street banks, forcing them to use bail-out money to shore up their reserves instead of lending the money to private businesses that wish to expand and help the country by increasing growth and job creation (ed). Five days later and a hundred years to the day when Olhanense was founded, the team travelled to the far north to take on high flying sc braga. salvador agra, ismailia & mateus were missing through suspension whilst regulars mauricio and rui duarte were left on the bench. When braga took the lead in the 20th minute it looked like curtains for the visitors but the second-half was a totally different story. caué levelled the score on 56 minutes and twenty minutes later dady gave Olhanense the lead when he deftly chipped the advancing Quim after good work by Wilson eduardo. braga threw everyone forward and Fernando alexandre miraculously managed to keep out a goal bound shot from the league’s top marksman lima. in the 77th minute braga’s douglão was sent-off for abusing the referee but still the Os arsenalistas surged forward. Olhanense's highly rated keeper, Fabiano Freitas, made two world class saves as the 20,000 crowd fell silent. Olhanense became only the second team, after Porto, to win at the Quarry this season. this sensational result ensured that the algarve club and its faithful fans could celebrate their birthday in style the following evening.

Of course you look at the ball and keep your head steady. this has been the basis of good golf ever since the game started. the flexibility and length of the muscles will decide in the end how steady you can keep your head. For despite your firm intention to hold it rock steady it will, in fact, move a little during a “flat out” swing. this happens even to the greatest swingers during the execution of a full drive. good golfing!Keith. nail your head down rigid swing note; head clear of chest
