Tourism board introduces new features to make Ria Formosa park “more attractive”

I

n a bid to provide a “better experience” for visitors to the Ria Formosa park, the Algarve tourism board (RTA) has introduced new signposting and picnic areas at the Marim centre for environmental education. The Centro de Educação Ambiental de Marim, or CEAM, now boasts new information panels, new signs directing visitors through the correct trails, and areas to sit and relax while enjoying a picnic. This centre is located in Olhão and is the headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It is also home to RIAS, the region’s only wildlife rehabilitation centre. While the area is popular among nature lovers due to its natural beauty and vibrant wildlife, the regional tourism authority felt the centre could be “more appealing”. Says RTA, the new information panels

region’s “existing heritage”. The tourism board is also working on several new brochures to promote the Southwestern Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and the Sapal Nature Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António. They will be available in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French and will feature useful information such as maps and points of interest. “Valuetur is another example of a successful cross-border collaboration,” says Algarve tourism chief João Fernandes. “Through this project, we are able to strengthen our commitment to nature tourism, a product which is becoming more and more popular among national and foreign holidaymakers and which a few years ago accounted for 22 million annual holiday trips in Europe,” he adds. michael.bruxo@algarveresident.com

Everywhere he goes, Andreas Noe challenges volunteers to join this mission, From Foz do Minho to Vila Real de Santo António, the objective of this adventure, which counted on the participation of young people from Olhão, is to warn of the importance and urgency of reducing

the use of plastics whose percentage of recycling is just over 10 percent. The biologist’s journey through Portuguese lands is being recorded and will later be used to produce a documentary. As for the waste collected this by Alberto Iria’s students at Praia dos Cavacos, the garbage will be made available to plastic artists, who will convert them into works of art.

and signposting were created to “guide visitors along their hike through the natural park” and hopefully the new features will attract more people to the area – around 30,000 visit annually. This was the latest step in the tourism board’s strategy to bolster nature tourism in the Algarve, a niche which it believes has “great potential to grow” – perhaps even more so now when more holidaymakers are looking for destinations where they can enjoy activities in the open air, away from crowded places. Joaquim Castelão Rodrigues, regional director of the Algarve’s nature conservation and forest authority (DRCNF), believes the new equipment will also help conserve the protected species that can be found at the park. The investment was carried out by RTA as part of the Valuetur project, a crossborder initiative with Spain which aims to renovate or breathe new life into the

During our visit to the Maldives, Avril and I experienced several Sri Lankan curries, particularly made with fish or chicken. This curry was served on several occasions at the Spice Buffet Restaurant on Kanifushi Island. I was particularly taken with it, although seriously hot, I found it full of lingering flavours on the back of the tongue. After some experimenting with Habanero, Scotch Bonnets and Naga chillies, I found the Naga to give the best heat for flavour. Avril and I have found the Maldivians to be one of the most hospitable nations we have come across. When I asked for the recipe for this curry, it was a done thing, no questions asked. I have cooked this dish several times, it’s marvellous. But be very careful with chilli quantities, this dish is nail biting.

Sri Lankan Chicken Curry Serves 4-6 people INGREDIENTS 8-10 chicken pieces (5 thighs and 5 drumsticks), skin left on 10ml vegetable oil 12 fresh curry leaves (dried are an alternative) 2 onions, thinly sliced 8 garlic cloves, grated 4 green chillies, deseeded and sliced lengthways into strips 4cm fresh ginger, peeled and finely sliced 50ml Sri Lankan curry powder (much more fun and rewarding to make your own) 1-2 Naga chillies, deseeded and very finely sliced

6 cardamom pods, cracked 5-6 cloves, slightly crushed Cinnamon stick, cracked 250ml water 45ml lime juice or tamarind Puree (available from specialist shops) Salt to taste 200ml coconut milk METHOD Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the curry leaves for a matter of seconds. Add onions and fry for a minute, then add garlic, green chillies and ginger. You should experience a wonderful aroma from the pan. Once the spices start to turn a gold colour, add curry powder, cardamom, cloves, Naga chilli, and cinnamon fry

for a couple of minutes. Add the chicken, toss generously to ensure it’s well coated. Pour in the water, bring to a simmer and add the lime juice or tamarind , season with salt, cover with lid and allow to cook on a very low heat for about 45 minutes, until the chicken is about to fall off the bone. Pour in coconut milk, stir in and gently simmer for another 15-20 minutes or so. Serve with egg noodles (medium thread) or rice, along with crusty bread for dipping in the sauce. One of my tomato salad side dishes is also perfect.

Another dish passed on to me by Chef Olivier; very simple to prepare as it takes a matter of minutes from pan to plate. In my opinion, tuna should be raw in the centre, so it really is a flash fry over very high heat, leaving the fish extremely moist and tender. If raw fish is not your thing, then the steaks should be cooked on a lower heat for a couple of minutes on each side.

Mini Tuna Steaks with Sweet Chilli Sauce For 4 people INGREDIENTS Marinade: 45ml Chilli Boy Sesame Oil 60ml Chilli Boy Sweet Chilli Sauce 60ml soy sauce 45ml rice wine vinegar 6 garlic cloves, finely grated 2cm knob of fresh ginger, finely grated 4 Thai chillies, deseeded and finely sliced Bunch of fresh parsley, finely chopped, plus extra for garnish 500g tuna, sliced into steaks approximately 2cm thick 15ml vegetable oil

METHOD Blitz the marinade ingredients in a food processor. Place the tuna into a glass bowl and drizzle over the marinade. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for a couple of hours. When you’re ready to go, drizzle the oil in a large frying pan, bring to a very high heat and flash fry the fish. It literally takes less than a minute, turning twice. The steaks should be seared, but still very rare in the middle. To maintain the high heat, fry the steaks in 2-3 batches. Serve with a sprinkle of parsley. Serve with a couple of Oriental-style vegetable side dishes.

108

Any remaining marinade can be cooked in a small saucepan until it reduces and used as a drizzle over the tuna steaks. The same method can be followed for chicken or steak; obviously, the cooking times will vary.

hilli Boy Kitchen, the 2nd culinary book from the big flavour man Viv Thomas is finally here. Chilli Boy Kitchen is everything hot and Spicy; from growing your own chillies, drying them and preparing your own sauces with related herbs and spices. Great, easy to follow, step by step instructions for amazing mouth-watering dishes, accompanied by beautifully photographed images to illustrate what your creation should finally look like at your table. This cookery book is a joy. Created with both the novice and more experienced cooks in mind, Chilli Boy Kitchen is a guide to all things deliciously spicy. Whilst this book is dedicated to the use of chillies and leans heavily on the side of hot spices, with a little discretion one can reduce or cut out the chilli and still have delicious results that the whole family can enjoy. Chilli Boy Kitchen is the second book from Viv Thomas centred around the ever growing popularity of chilli and hot dishes. Viv Thomas’ anecdotal style and beautifully photographed dishes in 'I’m No Chef but I can Cook' are carried through with extra excellence and detail in the 2nd book; Chilli Boy Kitchen, communicating his love for big flavours and chilli spiked dishes. His company Chilli Boy Piri Piri, fast being recognised as the premium piri piri oil in Portugal, was the inspiration for the Chilli Boy Kitchen book. The company specialises in Piri Piri oils and other spicy condiments with a large fan base that follow Chilli Boy to fairs, buy on-line, and seek out specialist shops carrying the Chilli Boy products. Chilli Boy Kitchen is not only a cookbook, it is a page turner of wonderful vibrant colour that tantalises the senses, and with Christmas fast approaching it would be a very special gift to send or buy for that friend or family member that has a love for the heat in a meal. Making a Name for Himself T he name is the first thing you see as you drive along the EN125 past Tavira and heading West: Sen Rast. I later found out that this is two separate people, as graffiti artists often work in teams. Closer inspection reveals treasures on this dilapidating wall: crafted lines depict a motor boat branded with friendly stars and a patient looking stork, nesting. I wondered if the nest was actually a pile of branches at the foot of the building and after leaving I still wasn’t quite sure. Meanwhile, I took note of his number and later met Sen in Olhao where he was painting graffiti inside. Beth: So, why graffiti? Were you a rebel? Sen: Probably, I was repressed as a child. So was my mother, but she was trying to protect me. My dad was drunk a lot, and I was afraid of him; but my aunt was like someone sent from heaven. I loved to go there. My cousins took me to their friend’s place where all the walls were covered with heavy metal posters except for one small space where “Megadeth” was written in letters like I had never seen

10

before, and I was captivated. Beth: At seven? Sen: Yes. I still believe that hobbies are really important. They keep me from getting jealous, or being a tyrant with my wife and child; and back then I went through a few things: skateboarding for a couple of years, guitar for about the same. Then I had a BMX bike which I would take to Tavira. I painted it a different colour every week for I don’t know how many weeks, and then just kept on painting. Beth: Your Dad was a painter? Sen: I have that advantage. I know paint and how it works. He took me to Quarteira some weekends, and I started to see Graffiti. Then a BMX film from the States, showed me great graffiti. I started to experiment, and that is the hobby which stayed. Beth: I’ve seen some really good graffiti, but what is it with the name? Sen: Well, you got in touch with me through it. But there is this thing with names. We have a sort of competition, and whoever has the most names in the most improbable places is king. There’s also a sort of compulsion, an

addiction that develops. Beth: The top of the water tower in Olhao? How on earth did you manage to get up there? Sen: The Town Council funded us to hire a cat’s cradle to paint the building with the tower, but although I had a permit to paint the water tower, it was twice the height. Then one day I saw some men working on the mobile phone aerials, and I persuaded them to let me use their machine in the lunch hour! As we were going up and up and up I was terrified, but it was now or never, and I did the painting. Beth: How’s your ego? Sen: “Medio” Beth: Splashing your name everywhere? Sen: Sometimes when I am in that state between sleep and wakefulness I think “I shouldn’t be doing that” but then I wake up the next morning and I am ok. But I would like to do more commissioned work. More people are giving me jobs inside restaurants and shops. Beth: How many times have you been in court?

Beth Jackson meets grafitti artist 'Sen' to find out a bit more about what's behind the name. Sen: Only three or four. (That painting at Tavira cost me €500, despite the owner giving me permission.) But the police have turned up a hundred times or more. There is a buzz when I am painting and cars are passing. I don’t know who has phoned the cops and when I will feel a hand on my shoulder. Beth: So is it about adrenaline? Sen: Absolutely. I could be doing exactly the same painting for a commission and get bored. When I am doing an illegal graffiti I am alert all the time, every second counts. Beth: I’m not sure how to go about this interview. Sen: Be honest. Envoi: I am ambivalent about graffiti, mainly because of the name issue, but perhaps I need to develop my sense of humour. Maybe I also need to remember that there are times when society needs people who are willing to take risks, and in times of peace these people are still with us. Meanwhile let us look for what is good within it, and appreciate that our world is more colourful because of people like SEN.

Bruncheria Located in a typical Taviran street, just behind the Câmara Municipal, Bruncheria is the ideal place to enjoy your breakfast, lunch... or even a bit of both!

W

e met the new owner of Bruncheria, Duarte, who although originally from Lisbon, has lived in the Algarve for 36 years. Duarte opened his new venture on May 18th this year, well into the Covid 19 pandemic... a very brave move but with such a great location and strong belief in his concept, it was worth the risk. Bruncheria is located just around the corner from the Municipal Câmara of Tavira, minutes from the castle and the Roman bridge. The idea was to simply 'combine

12

Brunch with the Algarve's sunshine and joyful side, exploring new flavours through healthy recipes. This all started from the will to eat light, healthy and tasty food that filled us with energy'. Duartes slogan is 'Don't worry, eat happy, live longer'. Looking at his logo you may think that it's a smiley face; actually it was designed to be a couple sitting opposite each other, but a smiley face fits well with their slogan! First impressions of the restaurant is the great attention to detail. The interior is immaculately clean with a delightful 'old

fashioned' feel. From the seating to the old Islamic doors, it is full of character. Duarte is a perfectionist which is apparent in everything from the refreshed decoration, the simple menu, to the service he provides. As he says 'I serve my customers in such a way as I would like to be served'. In the kitchen is the very experienced and hard-working Isabel, who has worked in many restaurants over the years in and around Tavira. The light menu includes a classic omelette, a choice of chicken, salmon or vegan salads, soup of the day, quiche, smoothies

Please take a seat... When destiny brings together two creative minds, the results can be truly something special. Meet the owners of Oliveira, a fabulous new furniture store located in Tavira providing a long overdue choice to East Algarve residents and beyond.

16

Oliveira innovatively mixes beautifully renovated vintage Portuguese furniture and home decor with a selection of stylish, luxurious new items. We speak to co-owners: Lloyd Booker and Karen D’Oliveira about why and how they have created this concept. One of Oliveira’s vintage furniture items midrestoration

T

he concept for Oliveira was borne from our own frustrations at the lack of choice in East Algarve for high-quality, style led furniture. We felt there was an exciting opportunity to offer furniture suited to the contemporary, yet historic style of the properties here in the East. The first decision we made was by far the most important... and challenging! There is a growing trend to mix vintage furniture and decor with new and, this is something we believed could work fantastically here. We both love period Portuguese furniture but acknowledge that this is not perhaps as popular as it once was. So, with our respective backgrounds in art and design, we set about employing a strategy of renovating quality items of old furniture, turning them into what we have branded ‘Vintage Chic’. The store is within the former location of Karen’s other business, Tavira D’artes Art Gallery so it already has a creative pedigree. We will be selling original artworks in the store and these are often an inspiration for the colour schemes and renovation styles we are using.

www.eastalgarvemag.com

17

Lloyd continues “Having decided the strategy for our Vintage Chic items and with the help of a successful, Tavira based interior designer, we then set about choosing a range of high-quality items of furniture and furnishings from design manufacturers located in Portugal and several other European countries. Our ‘Luxurious New’ range provides customers with a wide selection of sumptuously soft textiles and cushions, to design-led lamps and ceiling lighting. We are also thrilled to offer a bespoke order service for our large range of superb, stylish sofas and chairs, fully customisable in the colour and fabric desired. The store itself is divided into separate installations denoted by colour theme and furniture style. For example, our ‘Morrocan’ area immerses our customers in warm terracotta colours and dark, Arabic items of furniture whereas our ‘Black and Gold’ area is a celebration of rich gold gilts and luxurious velvet textiles. We are also in the final stages of developing our website where our customers will be able to view our entire range, including our individual, unique items of renovated vintage furniture. We aim to make Oliveira THE destination furniture and home decor shop for the East Algarve, appealing to both residents, rental owners, boutique hotels and businesses and, as our brand message states, we hope to ‘inspire your home’. Finally, Karen and I would like to say a huge thank you to the talented and selfless people who have helped make this happen.”

Oliveira have mixed beautifully renovated vintage furniture items with stunning new pieces.

It has been enjoyable to learn about this new business, especially in such difficult times but we wish them the up-most success for the future and hope you will take the opportunity to see much more of their range in person. The Oliveira store is located at Rua 4 de Outubro 24, Tavira 8800-362. Learn more about them at www.byoliveira.com

A typical example of one of the vintage chic items available at Oliveira. Once a dark and badly damaged occasional table, this stunning renovation has given this beautiful table a new lease of life.

During these uncertain times with ever-changing rules and restrictions regarding travel and quarantine measures, a lot of people who were thinking of selling a home have wondered whether they should move forward or sit tight until things return to normality. The number of people visiting the Algarve in the past 8 months is sharply lower than previous years, but most of the prospects who visited the Algarve during the pandemic were serious property hunters. There are still a lot of buyers who were ready already before the pandemic hit in March, but they could not find the right property yet. Many of these clients are still more driven than ever because of historically low mortgage rates. Others are cash buyers, which are faced with negative interest rates on their savings accounts in their home countries. Owning land and property has always be seen a good way of preserving wealth and protecting capital against inflation. Portugal is and will stay in the focus of the world. It is considered to be a safe, expat friendly country with a pleasant climate and relatively low cost of living and the Algarve in particular has one of the lowest transmission rates (Rt) of Covid-19 in all mainland regions. Some homeowners have chosen to postpone putting their property for sale and some have taken their property off the market resulting in fewer homes available for purchase. That low inventory coupled with good buyer demand means that sellers have less competition and more leverage. Tight supply has kept pressure on home prices. You can still get a great price for your home, and because of increased buyer competition, we are still seeing multiple offer situations and some homes going for over list price. Also the increase in people working from home has made some homeowners wonder if they need a larger place or a more functional layout, so they are also looking for a new home. If you want to sell your property in a reasonable time frame and with confidence, you’ll need to know all of your options so you can make an

informed decision that best aligns with your current circumstances and goals. What can you do to attract buyers to sell your home in a timely manner? Land & Houses Algarve – Yellow Homes compiled a list of useful tips. From developing a strong online presence to making your home move-in ready, these tips can help shorten the time between listing and selling your home. List your house with a real estate agent who has a proven track record Finding the right real estate agent is the first step and one that should not be taken lightly. To navigate a process involving property documentation and back-and-forth communications between agent, homeowner and prospective buyer, it is advisable to have a professional assisting you. A licensed and reputable real estate agent has the resources to properly list your house. They will understand your needs and then tailor the services to your end goal in any market. Beyond that, their experience can potentially save you thousands of euros and time. Engage a law firm Selling or buying a home will probably be one of the largest and most significant events you will make in your life. It involves property laws which can be unique to the area which can raise special issues/problems not present in other transactions. Without an expert to keep track of all the intricacies of the transaction, you cannot necessarily count on the sale to go quickly or smoothly. Be realistic with your listing price Nothing kills a real estate deal faster than an over-priced property. An experienced agent will

www.eastalgarvemag.com

have good knowledge of the local market and will research the prices of listed and recently sold homes in and around your neighbourhood before putting your house on the market. Having a realistic asking price is critical to sell a home quickly and doesn’t necessarily mean the lowest price. Homebuyers are smart and better informed than ever. They know when a property is overpriced and simply ignore it. Don’t let your listing go stale! Prepare the house for viewings A good preparation is everything! You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. Preparing your home for viewers, or “staging” as it’s called, is important and it is the key to creating a pleasant environment. It will not only ensure your property is sold faster but can potentially add thousands of euros to it's value. Keep the pets away Pets are family. But they’re your family. You may be accustomed to or not be aware of the scent which can put buyers off. Let the Light in and light the fire Most buyers want to see that a home has plenty of natural light. Remove heavy draperies and open up the shutters or blinds. If it’s a cold evening or a chilly day, light your fire. Urgent sale: Sell for less than market value. Making a steep price reduction can be a solution when nothing else seems to be working. Your property instantaneously becomes the best buy in the area. If this doesn’t work consider to sell for less than replacement value. It’s an option that should only be used under extreme circumstances if you need to liquidate quickly. Speak with your agent and/or change your real

estate agent in case they have lost interest. Final Thoughts Buying and selling a home in today’s environment definitely looks different than it did this time last year. Land & Houses Algarve – Yellow Homes is taking the proper precautions to keep everyone as safe as possible, and keep transactions moving forward. Our company has been successful at selling properties in the Algarve for more than 20 years. It´s still a good time to sell, but you need someone on your side who is up-to-date on the current market and is looking out for your best interests. With more property sales than property listings we are more eager than ever to list quality properties or plots particularly around the areas of Tavira, Praia Verde, Manta Rota, Moncarapacho, Santa Catarina, Almancil and Vilamoura. If you are considering selling your property and would like to speak with a member of our team then please call us now on 281 320 281 to make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you soon. In any event best of luck getting your home sold! BEAUTIFUL B&B, QUINTA WITH 4 SELF CONTAINED COTTAGES Montinho da Luz has been a successful holiday for many years, accommodation with a beautiful quinta and 4 self-contained cottages, all situated on a spacious plot of 1.3 hectares in Moncarapacho. This property is the ideal opportunity to combine living and working in one of the most beautiful spots of the Algarve and it is now for sale. What do the owners say about Montinho da Luz? “About 10 years ago, during a rainy period in the Netherlands, we sat on the couch together overthinking our lives. Our children became grownups and were wise enough to provide for themselves, we had done a good job and realised that the life that

remained was a live without challenges, a comfortable life but somewhat boring… so we decided to seek for some excitement abroad! Within a year we had finalized our business in the Netherlands and found a beautiful new challenge with the help of Divine Home: Montinho da Luz. We fell in love immediately; the garden, the houses, the environment, it all felt so good. And it still does! Montinho da Luz is our baby. We have turned it into an even more beautiful property with all the comfort a guest could wish for. We created a beautiful, mature and low maintenance garden and all improvements we made to the garden and the house, we made them with love for the environment and the surrounding area. The Eastern Algarve has stolen our hearts. It has no high-rise buildings, it smells of citrus fruit and the people are so welcoming, kind and helpful. Here you still find authentic villages where the locals live and work. No crowded tourist vacation areas, with tired restaurant owners. Our guests acknowledge

that if you are captivated by nature, the hills and valleys, the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and of course the Atlantic Ocean with all its treasures, you fall in love with the East Algarve. Moncarapacho, only 2 km from Montinho da Luz, with its restaurants, cafes and southern European liveliness is a fantastic home base and although we are ready for a new challenge, but we will continue to live here in the Moncarapacho-Fuseta area.” Are you looking for a new challenge and do you have the dream to combine living and working? This is your chance! Request more information or book your viewing for this property (ref. SVP1124) via moncarapacho@divine-home.eu or call +351-289 247 824. his month ARTESIS Galeria is hosting an impressive exhibition of artwork by 35 different artists, inspired by the poem by Alvaro de Campos. This exhibition is part of the current "Festa dos Anos de Alvaro de Campos" held every year in Tavira to celebrate the birthday of Tavira’s favourite poet. The exhibition is a fascinating and eclectic collection of work, including paintings, stone sculpting, ceramics, foundobject compositions, prints and more. As is ARTESIS Gallery's style, most work is very contemporary. Visitors get to cast a vote for ‘Best-in-Show’ to decide which artist is offered their own exhibition in ARTESIS.

CARING FOR O

ne of the “good” things I busy myself with is caring for our environment. For me, it is a way to express my gratitude for living in such a wonderful place, a little paradise, and it is a means to show my appreciation for life in general. I consider it a true blessing that I am here on this planet and able, physically, to do what I do. It is, in a way, a celebration of and being of service to life itself. It is also a matter of not being able to ignore what I see. If something wrong is seen, it is natural for action to be taken. Simply seeing is where it all starts. Personally, I like to keep life simple. It can seem at times that I live under a rock, or perhaps a more accurate description would be that I live under a huge mound of plastic and litter... I go out on my paddle board on average about 3-4 times a week. It all depends on tide times and wind. A good week will see me out nearly everyday, a bad week will mean I am land bound and only able to be on my board once or twice if I’m lucky. On my land bound days, I walk the beaches connected to the mainland and pick

38

litter there and I am part of the Movimento Castro Marim group, helping to coordinate and participate with the cleanup events. To give an indication of the scale of the problem, in the past 1.5 years I have collected over 43000 litres (43 cubic meters) of waste from the Ria Formosa and along the coastline from VRSA to Olhāo. To illustrate scale size, the large fuel tankers you see on the road hold about 35000-40000 litres. A hatchback car is roughly 9 cubic meters, so nearly 5 of them. The biggest part of my work is concentrated on the Castro Marim beaches and the Ria Formosa. The litter collected from the Movimento group is not included in this tally, if so it would be much larger. The island I have been working on and protecting for the last 18 months is finally much better. I no longer collect 150 litres of waste each visit as the average now is roughly 50 - 75 litres per time (still, imagine 50-75 bottles or 150 half litre bottles each time). There are 2 or 3 rotten boats (fibreglass) on the island that still need removing though. Between my Instagram and FB account I have my "work" largely

www.eastalgarvemag.com

PARADISE documented. I made these accounts to share what is going on with others, the reality of the situation, to create awareness and to share my experiences with others. On both accounts I have had overwhelmingly positive responses and have had messages from individuals that have started to cleanup after seeing my posts. This happens in real life too. People have come up to me to let me know they will start picking litter because they have seen me doing it. Others come up to me to say thanks, or to let me know they do the same and then, of course, there are those that say it is all pointless. I happily disagree with the last category, each piece of litter collected is a win for nature and helps to protect birds and marine life. Since my arrival in Altura, the Movimento group has been started. It is an initiative of the Municipio of Castro Marim, Sra Filomena Sintra has been a star in getting this off the ground with the help of Sra Nelia Matteus and the full backing of Sr Francisco Amaral. I am very fortunate that many people here are connected to nature and they are passionate about protecting

www.eastalgarvemag.com

Meet Verona 'Paradise' who literally is... caring for Paradise! After living in Altura for two years, and unaware of the East Algarve Magazine, Verona tells me she's been 'living under a rock'

her. My good friends and my new family here are all active members and support the Movimento group. The group continues to expand in members and I look forward to cleanups organised all throughout the Castro Marim Municipio. I know that litter picking is not tackling the source of the problem, however, I believe that awareness can start here. To make sure we have a planet to hand down to the next generation we can take responsibility for the mess we have collectively created, afterall we all use single-use products daily. It starts with first seeing the litter in our natural places and second, bending over to pick it up. It’s pretty easy to make a difference. After picking up a few hundred empty plastic water bottles I imagine it could make a person look at their own purchasing habits. It really is difficult to ignore our own role in contributing to the waste problem while picking up the remnants of single-use litter strewn along the shorelines. Curious to see more? Understanding Occupational Therapy

T

he 27th October is the World Occupational Therapy day. And to celebrate this day in this “strange year”, and because it is a profession that I love, I decided to put thus into words and show the world that this profession that is altruistic and human. But first let me tell you, dear reader, how I first discovered this profession and how I dived into it’s humanistic approach. Back in my early 20's when I started my higher education, I wanted to be a Physiotherapist or a Psychologist. In the same health school where I intended to study, there was another health course called Occupational Therapy. I was told that it was a profession for those who have a passion for life! It was a profession of care and at the same time a scientific profession! So I thought: - why not Sara? Why don’t you try if you like people and care for their well-being? I started learning the profession that changed my life, my way of seeing life and that has helped me to understand what it means to have health, happiness, and fulfillment! So, let me introduce Occupational Therapy! It is a field of knowledge and intervention in health, education and social circles, putting together technology that guides people for emancipation and autonomy, that for some reason, whether it be physical problems, sensorial, mental, psychological or even social problems, have difficulties in integration and participation in social life. The intervention of occupational therapy by using activities, centralizing and guiding elements, in the complex and contextualized construction of the therapeutic process. One of the pillars of the profession is to use different properties that are presented in human activities as a therapeutic resource to develop, restore or enlarge the functional skills of people.

40

The goal of their action is to find ways for people to reach their autonomy, independence and make the most of their potential. It is called "occupational" therapy because of the emphasis it places upon the importance of occupation (e.g., functional tasks and activities performed throughout life that are meaningful and purposeful to the individual). One of the frameworks I use for therapy and also in life, is the Model of Human Occupation. This is a very important occupation-based framework and is woven into the fabric of Occupational Therapy. It utilizes a top-down holistic approach to looking at the individual, their meaningful activities or occupations, and relationship with their environment. This model explains how occupations are motivated and organized into daily life patterns and performed within a person’s environment. In more practical and real-life terms, I like to think of this model as a way to organize and understand how to use occupations into practice to improve people’s health by understanding how and why meaningful activities are motivated, patterned, and performed. Within this definition are three very important terms that are key to understanding the model of human occupation – volition (motivation), habituation (habits, roles, patterns), and performance. What I think that differentiates occupational therapy from other professions, is that it looks deeply into the volition (the Power or ability to decide something yourself) of the person and their sense of self-efficacy. The model of human occupation allows us to dive into the why and how our patients or clients live, work, and engage with their environment. In doing so, we can better understand what is important to them and integrate this into practice, which in essence is what makes us occupational

therapists. These are some questions an occupational therapist would need to know about a client: • Why are certain people motivated to do what they do? In other words, what are their values, interests, or occupations? • How is occupational behavior organized or structured? What are an individual’s patterns, habits, or routines? • How well can a person complete the task or occupation they are motivated to do? This model is fascinating and allows us to connect with patients or clients on a deeper level. Occupational Therapy develops and occurs during our whole life. So, occupational therapists work with children, adults or seniors who need help in performing their occupations. There are two quotes of Osho that I quote here for your and my reflection: 1 “Respect life, revere life. There is nothing more holy than life, nothing more divine than life.” 2 “Life is not a problem. To look at it as a problem is to take a wrong step. It is a mystery to be lived, loved, experienced.” So, dear reader, if you think you want to understand yourself at a deeper level and want understand why you do your 'occupations' the way you do, or even if you want change your occupations but don’t know how to start, please contact SER Igual. If you are having difficulties in your daily routine and need an extra help, please make an appointment with our team of occupational therapists. SER Igual (@SerIgualPT; geral@seronline.pt; 918 180 020) wants to help you to improve your being! Come along and make an appointment. We respect all the conditions of DGS for security and cleaning. Hope to see you soon dear reader. Thanks for your attention. Stay safe and stay tuned for next month article!

The

Heart of a successful Garden

Often very neglected the soil we use, is in essence the most important medium within the garden

S

oil is often viewed as the boring part of gardening. While garden soil will never be glamorous or even as interesting as choosing plants, there is a whole world under our Wellingtons that literally and figuratively is the foundation for our gardens. New gardeners are cautioned to put money and effort into improving their soil before they even consider planting, but few appreciate the wisdom in what they are hearing until they watch their new plants struggling for survival and demanding more and more food and water. In organic gardening, you learn to feed the soil and let the

www.eastalgarvemag.com

soil feed the plants. The soil found in a typical yard will be about 90% mineral residue and only about 10% decayed organic matter. Yet it sustains a community of insets and microorganisms. The reason for adding additional organic matter to your soil is to provide food for the beneficial microorganisms that release nutrients into the soil as they decompose the organic matter. Earthworms and other soil dwelling insects aerate the soil as they move through it and contribute still more organic matter with their waste and decomposition. This makes for what is called healthy soil.

Pesticides sprayed on the plants will make its way into the soil and can kill the insects and microorganisms living there. Synthetic fertilizers contain salt, which can also kill the soil's residents as well as build up in the soil and cause harm to the plants you are feeding. And synthetic fertilizers add nothing to the soil's fertility. WHAT IS HEALTHY SOIL? When discussing soil, we generally focus in on four things: texture, structure, pH, organic matter and fertility. Soil Texture Soil texture refers to the size of the soil particles.

41

Sand: Sand has the largest particles and they are irregularly shaped. This is why sand feels course and also why it drains so well. Sand doesn’t compact easily. Silt: Silt particles are much smaller than sand, but still irregularly shaped. Clay: Clay has microscopic sized particles that are almost flat. Clay packs very easily, leaving little to no room for air or water to move about. Sandy Loam: Sandy loam is considered the ideal garden soil and consists of a mix of the three basic textures. However, don’t run out to buy sand to add to your clay soil or vice versa. Mixing sand and clay will give you cement. There’s more to the equation than just balancing soil textures. Soil Structure Soil structure refers to the way soil clumps together. You can usually determine what your texture is by testing your structure. Squeeze a handful of damp soil into a ball in your hand. If you poke the ball lightly with your finger and it breaks apart, it is probably sand. If a bit more pressure breaks it, you’re dealing with silt. If it sits there despite your poking, you have mostly clay. Do determine a more accurate reading of the percentage of each texture in your soil, try this easy experiment. A good soil structure is crumbly. This allows plant roots to work their way through it, air can pass through and water drains, but not so quickly that the plants can’t access it. There are two basic ways to improve soil structure and they work in tandem. Soil dwelling insects. As mentioned earlier, insects moving about in the soil help to aerate the soil and they add small amounts of organic

42

matter, the second structure improver. Organic Matter. Organic matter improves any type of soil. Compost, leaf mould, manure and green manures are all decaying organic matter. They loosen and enrich soil and provide food for the soil dwelling insects. 3. Soil pH Soil pH is a measure of your soil's acidity (sourness, a measure of below 7.0) or alkalinity (sweetness, a measure higher than 7.0), with 7.0 being neutral. Most garden plants prefer a pH in the neutral range. Some plants are more specific in their requirements. Lilacs and clematis thrive in sweet soils. Rhododendrons and blueberries like a lower pH. You can adjust the pH in different parts of your landscape. Generally speaking, if your plants are growing healthy and well, your pH is probably fine. If your plants are having nutrient problems or are not growing vigorously, it’s worth it to test your pH. If the soil’s pH is not within an acceptable range for the plants you are growing, the plants will not be able to access the nutrients in the soil, no matter how much you feed them. You can buy many types of pH testers in a garden centre. You can also bring a sample into your local Cooperative Extension office, to be tested for a nominal fee. Once you know what your pH is, you can begin to adjust it slowly. You add some form of lime to raise pH and a form of sulfur to lower it. What type and how much depends upon your soil and test results. Your Extension report and most testing kits will tell you what to do once you get your results. Adding lime or sulfur to alter soil pH is not a quick fix. It can take months to register a change in the pH and you will need to periodically retest

your soil to insure it doesn’t revert to its old pH. It is sometimes easier to simply change your plants to suit your pH. Organic Matter Organic matter does so many wonderful things for a garden, it’s just silly not to take advantage of it. There would be no organic gardening without organic matter. Decaying organic matter is how plants are fed in nature. Unfortunately we’ve become very tidy landscapers and we tend to remove any dead plant material that falls onto our lawns. It would be so much more beneficial to allow the fallen leaves to blow off into the bushes, where they will not only feed the soil, they also prevent erosion and mulch the soil. Organic matter added to garden soil improves the soil structure and feeds the microorganisms and insects. The more beneficial microorganisms your soil can support, the less bad organisms will survive. The good guys feed on harmful microbes like nematodes and certain soil born diseases. They also release their nutrients into the soil when they die. So the more beneficial microorganisms that are in the soil, the more nutrients will be in the soil. And many types of organic matter add still more soil nutrients to the mix. Organic matter also contains acids that can make plant roots more permeable, improving their uptake of water and nutrients, and can dissolve minerals within the soil, leaving them available for plant roots. Types of Organic Matter Compost is the poster child of organic matter. Compost is any kind of decayed organic matter. You can make your own or buy it by the bag or truckload. Finished compost looks like rich

soil. It’s dark and crumbly with an earthy smell. By the time the compost cooking process is complete, weed seeds, fungus spores and other undesirable elements that may have gone into your compost bin, should no longer be viable. Compost can be added to your gardens at anytime, either turned into the soil or used as a mulch or top dressing. Manure Aged animal manure is an organic material with an added bonus of soil nutrients. Animal manure must be aged for 6 months to a year, before it is applied to the garden. Fresh manure will burn your plants, may contain bacteria that can cause illness from contact and it stinks. You can add fresh manure to a compost heap and let it age there. Cow, sheep and chicken manure are the most popular varieties, but there are several more. The manures to avoid because of their disease potential for humans are: cat, dog, pig and human manures. Soil Fertility The nutrients in your soil are the final component in building healthy soil. Just like people, plants need certain nutrients to grow and to fend off disease. Organic fertilizers can be made from plant, animal or mineral sources and are basically returning what was taken from the soil. Organic fertilizers are released slowly, which means that plants can feed as they need to. There is no sudden change in the makeup of the soil which might harm the microbial activity. Building healthy soil is an ongoing process. By making healthy soil a focus at the start of making a garden, you will have a head start on creating a sustainable organic garden.

SAVE AND EARN MONEY with Photovoltaics

K

A new buzz word in the world of renewables is “PV” more properly known as photovoltaics. So what is it..?

eeping it brief – PV has been abbreviated from the term (p) hoto (v)oltaic. “PV” materials and their devices convert sunlight into electrical energy. How Does it Work? An individual PV cell produces 1-2 watts of power. Made of semi-conductor material in many shapes and sizes, these enable cells to capture light, or photons from the sun, and convert energy into useful electricity. On the reverse is a layer of illuminated material which collects electricity. It has an anti-reflection coat to minimize losses due to reflection. Solar cells are often less than the thickness of four human hairs. They are sandwiched between protective materials in a combination of glass and (or) plastics to make a module. Solar panels Most solar panels are made from crystalline silicon. They are connected in chains to form large units known as modules or panels. Then they can be used individually, or allied to form arrays. One or more is linked to an electrical grid as part of a PV system. These systems can be built to meet any electric power requirement.

44

Inverters A solar inverter is an electrical device that converts output from a direct to alternating current. With other electrical accessories, it sets up a working system. Inverters contain safety devices to include ground fault circuit interruption and anti-islanding, which stops shut-down when there is a loss of grid power. Racking Refers to the apparatus made from steel or aluminum, that fix solar panels (flat or pitched), to the ground or roof. They are bonded and earthed to prevent electrocution. Most residences that have a photovoltaic structure are a small ground or roof-mounted (building integrated systems) with varying capacities, running from a few, to tens of kilowatts, and are grid connected. Components These include combiners, disconnects, breakers, meters and wiring. A combiner links two or more electrical cables into one large one. Disconnects are electrical switches which allow manual disconnection of an electrical wire. Circuit breakers protect systems from surges triggering automatically when a current reaches a predetermined amount.

An electric meter measures the amount of energy that passes through. Electrical cables transport the energy from and between each component. Wiring exposed to sunlight must have protection against UV and wires carrying DC current sometimes require metal sheathing for added protection. Solar Battery Systems Pairing solar batteries with arrays is a fairly new practice. You can benefit in 4 key ways: 1 Store energy for later use 2 Significantly lower your energy costs 3 Earn money by selling stored energy to the grid 4 Become independent from the grid Solar batteries store energy generated during sunlight hours and make available during non-productive hours, like night or cloudy days. You can enable your home to run on 100% renewable solar energy round the clock, providing demand does not exceed supply that the battery offers Benefits By charging the solar battery during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak hours, you can avoid paying a lot for electricity from your utility company. You can earn money by

www.eastalgarvemag.com

selling the energy stored in your solar battery back to the grid when electricity prices are at their highest—if your utility allows net metering. By adding a solar panel battery to your system, you can choose to be independent from the national grid at any time, thereby ensuring energy security for your household. Reader’s Questions and Answers

ach month we receive different questions from our readers, although some of these questions are related to specific situations, sometimes the answer may help you to better understand the tax system in Portugal and answer the queries from other readers. I am 67 years old and just sold my property in Portugal. This was my primary habitation and I sold it for the value of 300,000 euros. This house was purchased in 2014 for 220,000 euros and I had a mortgage to buy it. The debt to the bank at time of sale was 30,000 euros. How much do I need to reinvest, to avoid paying taxes in Portugal. First in order to make sure that this was your primary habitation, you need to check if the address of the house is the address registered at the Portuguese tax office. If this is not the case, you should change it at least 6 months prior to the sale. If you noticed this too late, please be aware that the change of address in some cases can be done retrospectively. In terms of the amount to reinvest, it is the proceedings of the sale, minus the mortgage redeemed at the time of deed. The mortgage is only considered if taken prior to 2015 and for the purpose of purchasing the asset. For many years I rented my property in Albufeira for tourists. Last year I decided to move to Portugal and sold that property to buy a bigger one. My accountant has informed me that because the property was on Local Lodging, I cannot use the new property as reinvestment. Can you help? In fact, when the activity is registered at the tax office, the property is assumed to have been transferred to your Alojamento Local Business. This is a rule and means that although the property is still in your name, it is not on the personal sphere, but on the business sphere. So, if the sale occurs when the property is in the business, there is no possibility of reinvestment, as this is only allowed if the property is the permanent address of the taxpayer. However, there are two issues to be considered in this case: Provided that the assumptions referred to in article 34 of the VAT Code are met, a taxpayer may cease his activity retrospectively, by submitting a declaration of termination which, due to being delivered after the deadline provided for in article 33 of the same code, will be subject to the respective fine. Rules of Financial Literacy

F

inancial education is the possession of a set of skills and knowledge that allows an individual to make informed and effective decisions with all of their financial resources. It is also called ‘financial literacy,’ and it’s extremely important in order for you to make progress and get ahead in life. If you were looking for improvement in your personal and financial life, you might be looking for financial freedom and financial independence. It means that you want to reach a point in your life where you no longer have to depend on family, a job, or a company you don’t like… for money. But there is another concept I would like you to understand. And that’s financial confidence. Financial confidence is different from financial freedom, and this is because freedom is based on the amount of money you have available, while financial confidence is based on your confidence and acumen to generate money. Here’s the thing… When it comes to making money, there are a bunch of rules you have to follow. If you play by the rules you will master your financial life. We live in an age where information is becoming more and more readily available, every day, for very little cost, and sometimes even free. Today, it’s mostly accessible through a few internet searches. But even with so much information at our fingertips, would it surprise you to know that 90% of the world’s population is still financially ignorant? Here’s a quick example. Peter just received his monthly paycheck, and after tax he’s left with £1,700. Instead of using his money to invest, save, or anything else that might be useful, he decides to go out eating with his friends twice at the weekend, as well as purchasing another pair of jeans to go with the twenty pairs he already has. There are millions of Peters in this world.

Are you a Peter? Wealthy people are not financially ignorant people. Unless of course, you count the few who just got lucky, like receiving a large inheritance or a win on the lottery. But before you run out to buy a lottery ticket or ten, statistics show that 70% of big winners end up bankrupt after just a few years. Why is that? Again, it all comes down to how financially educated one is. If you have no true understanding of how wealth really works, you will still make bad decisions and lose most, if not all your money eventually - and that’s because you don’t know or understand the fundamentals of money management. So, if you want long-term growth you absolutely have to get financially educated and understand the mindset that goes with it. Some habits must go, while new, productive habits move in to take their place. I think we can all agree that this type of education is not, and will never be, taught in schools. So, if all of this information is so easily accessible to us… why don’t more people take the time to learn about their finances? Well, there are two main reasons for that. 1: Conventional wisdom: and here’s the stinger. Financial education is not conventionally okay. Most people will instill within you a mindset of scarcity, and if your mindset is off kilter and in agreement because of it - then it’s very unlikely that you will ever attain real wealth in your life. How many times did we hear our parents tell us as children… “Money doesn’t grow on trees?” If you hear words based upon scarcity long enough and often enough, eventually you’ll live by them – and in turn, not take the necessary steps early enough in life in order to begin understanding money as a tool you need to master, rather than a tool you’ll never own. Another conventional concept that is widely thought but wrong, is the negative

connotation towards debt. There’s good debt and there’s bad debt. Good debt could be a mortgage or similar (an investment), bad debt is using credit cards to pay rent and bills while you spend all your hard-earned cash partying (money down the drain). Debt is a powerful but often deadly weapon. Those who know how to use debt the right way will thrive, while those who are scared of it, will miss a lot of opportunities. 2: Comfort zone and self-esteem: Confidence allows you to act outside of your comfort zone, take risks and perform under pressure. If you want to start your own business but don’t have the money to do so – you may have to risk taking a loan from the bank and be thousands of dollars in debt. Without the confidence, you’ll never take action. It all starts with you and your mindset when it comes to risk-taking and possible failures. But don’t forget - there are rules. Don’t invest in what you don’t understand. Investing is important for growth, and this also applies to you. You will not grow personally without the time spent investing in yourself and knowledge first. This rule is not optional, it is a must. It’s like business – if you are not consistently ahead of the curve and learning all of the time, your industry whatever that may be, will move on without you. Therefore, it’s important to be proactive and stay updated on all the information that matters to you, and to your success. It makes sense therefore to begin listening to, and taking advice from, those who know how to manage money. After all, you wouldn’t want to learn how to ski from someone who’s never been on a slope before, would you. Research. Research. Research. And when you think you’re finished with learning and know enough… learn some more.

A good currency specialist will work with you to help you understand when to move your money, and they will provide a variety of options designed to suit your needs. Once you have found that special property, you need to move quickly. Estate agents will ask for a small reservation fee to take property off the market, lawyers may ask for a retainer, or you may want to engage the services of a surveyor. This is the reason why having a great currency provider in place is very important. Why GC partners? Established in the UK in 2003, with an office in Portugal for over 15 years, GC Partners have an experienced and friendly local team in the Algarve and worldwide. We move money overseas quickly, reliably, and securely using great foreign exchange rates. Speak to our specialists and you will see why we are rated 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot. Not only do we outperform the high street banks, but we will also guide you through the money transfer process. Opening an account with GC Partners to arrange your currency transfers is easy and only takes a few minutes. You can do this online at www.gcpartners.co/register or in person at one of our offices. Contact us on Portugal +351 282 768 136 or the UK +44 (0) 203 974 4738 or email portugal@gcpartners. co. Edificio do Cinema, Loja 1, Rua da Lusotur, Vilamoura, 8125-432, Portugal.

Golf - World Handicap System: An overview

T

he world Handicap System for Golfers was launched in Portugal on 20 August 2020. The system is designed to ensure that handicaps are calculated consistently all over the World. This enables all golfers to compete on a fair and equitable basis. The system has combined the previous six different ways used to measure handicaps and is now controlled by the R & A and USGA. The full rules are available at - https://portal. fpg.pt/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/WHSRules-of-Handicapping-Portugal-EN.pdf The slope rating of the courses indicates the degree of difficulty of a golf course relative to a scratch golfer. So, the rating indicates the number of strokes a scratch player is expected to take from a set of tees under normal playing conditions. It is also rated for the bogey golfer and it is the relationship between the two that indicates the slope rating. Slope ratings range from 55 to 155, the average being 113. The higher the rating, more strokes are allowed to be added to handicap index. The course slope ratings are shown on the notice board and by the first tee. (A bogey golfer represents the ability of a male 20 or lady 24 handicap golfers, on a course of average difficulty). A player’s handicap index, (only valid if you are a member of an affiliated club), is calculated to one decimal place. The course handicap is rounded to the nearest integer. The course handicap may exceed the new maximum of handicap 54, if playing a course with a slope rating of 114 or higher. Players are encouraged to return sufficient scores during 2020, either in competitions or through supplementary scores to reach the magic 20, from which the best 8 will determine the world handicap index which is indicative of current playing ability. Moving forward you can submit social and competitive scores to develop a really accurate handicap. When you have a really good round the score becomes part of the best eight out of the last twenty and you will likely see a reduction in your handicap. An “exceptional score” reduction

By Peter Ibbs may be applied, depending on how good the score was relative to your current handicap index. The score is posted on the player’s record the following day or very soon thereafter. Scores can vary on good and bad days for the competitor so the system calculates the average of the best eight scores from the last twenty completed rounds. The handicap index will be responsive, with added adjustments for exceptionally good scores. The calculation retains a memory of past performance. This will prevent extreme upward movement and therefore better reflect demonstrated ability. The averaging system will ensure your handicap is always representative of your current ability. You can use your WHS handicap index on any course throughout the World. If you pre-register any scores can be returned to your home club for handicap purposes. This makes it important that you designate your home club as they will be responsible for maintaining your Index. Competition entry is based on your handicap index; this will be clarified in the terms of the competition. Event organisers have the responsibility to manage and administer events so that they are fair to all. If a player fails to submit a score card the club handicap committee will investigate and take appropriate action. They can apply penalty scores, reset the handicap index, consider disciplinary action or even withdraw a handicap index for an agreed period, (following any relevant disciplinary procedures). It will be mandatory to submit all singles competition scores but you have the option to submit recreational scores that are preregistered and conform to the Rules of Handicapping and Rules of Golf. These may be, medal, Stableford, par/bogey and max score, as a single golfer. Team and pairs formats are not currently acceptable. Each time a score is submitted your handicap index is recalculated and the system is updated at midnight each day.

If you play a 9 hole round then all 9 holes must be played for the score to be included in your record. For an 18 holes round you must complete at least 10 holes for the score to be returned. Any holes not played will be allocated a net par or net par + 1, before the score is processed. A hole that is started but not completed will be recorded as net double bogey. The adjusted score is allocated to the player’s record. Scores may be adjusted depending on playing conditions on the day the round is played. Weather and abnormal conditions are considered through the ‘Playing Conditions Calculation’. (PCC) This is calculated from all scores, from all tees on that day. This checks whether the day differed from normal conditions to the extent that an adjustment may be needed to compensate. For example, this may determine that an average score for that particular day is better than a good score on a normal day. If the PCC determines that acceptable scores submitted are in line with expected scoring patterns then no adjustment is made. For new golfers a significant change is that they can gain a handicap index from a minimum of 9 holes, Rule 4.5 This score is then scaled up to an 18 holes equivalent. More acceptable is a minimum of three 18 hole rounds and then the Index is calculated on the best score of the three rounds. The maximum Index that can be allocated is 54. The Portuguese Golf Federation has contributed since the beginning of the project, to the development of the World Handicap System. It has the exclusive rights to use and administer the World Handicap System. All players are expected to act with integrity, play by the rules of golf, attempt to make their best score at each hole, refrain from using or circumventing the system to gain unfair advantage and submit acceptable scores as soon as possible after their round, and to provide evidence of their demonstrated ability.
