CONTENTS
Welcome...
...to our July issue. Summer is stretching before us and I am delighted to be joining the team as Editor, here at ‘Simply Algarve Magazine’. I wish to thank everyone for their good wishes upon our new venture. We are definitely embracing the journey ahead of bringing new life and a fresh way of keeping you ‘our readers’ informed. From our regular features, to the wonderful people we meet and their stories, the places we visit with their charm and history, and the restaurants at which we spend precious time with our family and friends. In fact, since joining the team it has made me realise that sometimes we forget how beautiful the Algarve is and what a diverse and varied culture lies here in the south of Portugal. Within our pages we hope you find something to inspire you and perhaps point you to something new and exciting! We will be introducing, as time goes on, new features and regular items to reflect our own diverse aspects and choices in everyday life.
In fact our world revolves around our ability to listen to and tell stories and we always love a good tale! Not all our stories will begin with ‘Once upon a time’, but we would like to hear about the things that you find important and would like to see featured in our magazine. Whether it be editorials or advertisements, local and international, please email me at denise@simplyalgarvemag.com Until our next issue, take care and enjoy the wonderful weather :-) Denise, Editor

sector was a big surprise because with incentives of around €70,000, "it was possible to attract about €3 million of investment." Botelho said that Tavira has been painted, fixed up, the churches and museums attended to, all of which has given a fresh look to the historic centre." The council also has been keeping its many churches open all year as a way to attract more visitors and to help ensure Tavira is recognised for its cultural offering. The mayor pointed out that people are buying in the city centre now that it looks smarter and that increasingly, there are fewer houses in the historic center that need fixing up and many others have been bought by private developers who have not started work yet. Now that the centre is done, Botelho wants to extend the paint job to other areas of the city and see if private money again will follow. Jorge Botelho said that the third phase of redevelopment will be along the riverfront to connect to the city centre to the Quatro Águas area.

PORTUGAL USED CAR TAX ILLEGAL - EU COURT OF JUSTICE
T
he European Union (EU) Court of Justice said on Thursday that the tax on used vehicles imported into Portugal from another member state violated the rules on the free movement of goods. The court said that Portugal discriminated against used vehicles as regards the devaluation tables it uses. "Portugal applies the same tax on used vehicles under one year old at the same rate as new vehicles and on vehicles over four years old the rate is 52 percent regardless of their real state", the court said. Following this decision, the European Commission (EC) will give Portugal a period of Grace in which to alter its laws.
NEW TOMI TOURIST INFORMATION POINTS OPERATING 24/7 ACROSS THE ALGARVE
omi tourist information points have already landed in Portimão and Olhão, with additional sleek units arriving soon in Faro and Vila Real de Santo António. The ‘interactive digital platform’ inside the Tomi units provides useful information to visitors. The standalone information points are supplied by Canal Algarve a subsidiary of the region’s business association, ACRAL, in partnership with TomiWorld. This software company from Viseu developed the technology and is supplying the 'giant interactive tablets' which now have been installed in Alvor, Mexilhoeira Grande, Praia da Rocha as well as Portimão and Olhão. "In the near future, the network of interactive billboards that provide information to those visiting or residing in the location - what to do, where to go and how to get around - will expand Lagoa, Lagos and
Tavira council areas," said an ACRAL spokesman. The 2m high ‘box with a screen’ displays local news, the area’s cultural agenda, points of interest such as parks and monuments, restaurants, shops and the details of local public transport. The touch screen also caters for those who are addicted to ‘selfies’ Tomi will take one of you which, through some wizardry, can be sent via email and posted on social networks. There has been no comment yet from the region's Tourist Information centre management. These traditional information shops are run by the regional tourist board under Desiderio Silva and stick to normal shop opening times. The TOMI information points lack the human touch but offer information in a clear, intuitive format and are in tune with the way that most tourists access information.

avira council decided in 2014 to designate certain areas of the city for urban renewal, a tactic that has paid off well, attracting private real estate investment in excess of €3 million at a cost to the council of well under €100,000. The creation of an Urban Renewal Area in downtown Tavira allowed the council to obtain EU funds to repair parts of the historic centre and as well as attract the private investment. Mayor Jorge Botelho said that after the creation of the ARU in 2014, the council applied for EU funds of around €1 million to sort out the roads, church facades and to tart up the historic centre. Due to these changes, Botelho says the area has attracted private individuals who have bought property, €3 million in total. "We made an assessment of the work needed in the early years for the ARU: €1 million of public investment, which was used to fix the streets and the squares, etc.," said the mayor, noting that "investment from the private

our body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work correctly. For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste, and lubricate joints. Water is needed for good health. How does my body lose water? Water makes up more than half of your body weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, when you are physically active, or if you have a fever. Vomiting and diarrhoea can also lead to rapid water loss. If you don’t replace the water you lose, you can become dehydrated. How do I know if I’m dehydrated? Symptoms of dehydration include the following: - Little or no urine, or urine that is darker than usual - Dry mouth - Sleepiness or fatigue - Extreme thirst - Headache - Confusion - Dizziness or lightheaded feeling - No tears when crying Don’t wait until you notice symptoms of dehydration to take action. Actively
prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of water. Who is at higher risk of dehydration? People are at higher risk of dehydration if they exercise at a high intensity, have certain medical conditions, are sick, or are not able to get enough fluids during the day. Older adults are also at higher risk. As you get older, your brain may not be able to sense dehydration and send the signals for thirst. You may need to increase the amount of water you are drinking if you: - Have certain medical conditions, such as kidney stones or bladder infection - Are pregnant or breastfeeding - Will be outside during hot weather - Will be exercising - Have a fever - Have been vomiting or have diarrhoea - Are trying to lose weight How much water should I drink daily? You may have heard different recommendations for daily water intake. Most people have been told they should drink 6 to 8, 8-ounce glasses of water each day, which is a reasonable goal. However, different people need different amounts of water to stay hydrated. Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, fewer than 8 glasses may
be enough. Other people may need more than 8 glasses each day. If you are concerned that you are not drinking enough water, check your urine. If your urine is consistently colorless or light yellow, you are most likely staying well hydrated. Dark yellow or amber-colored urine is a sign of dehydration. Tips for staying hydrated: Keep a bottle of water with you during the day. Purchasing bottled water is expensive and creates plastic bottle waste. Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it from the tap instead. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime to your drink. Be sure to drink water before, during, and after a workout. Drinking water may also contribute to a healthy weight-loss plan. Some research suggests that drinking water can help you feel full. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule. For example, drink water when you wake up; at breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and when you go to bed. Or drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour. So ask for a glass water when you go to a restaurant, it will keep you hydrated and it's free!

INSIDE INTERIOR DESIGN A passion for reflecting what's inside you, into the inside of your home...
R
odrigo Horn from Hamburg, Germany was born into a German-Portuguese family and established his company in Almancil 25 years ago. Growing up in an ever evolving and dynamic European city, he studied interior design in his hometown where he found his life long passion, décor! In the early years of Rodrigo's company, the Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago areas were flourishing with newly built villas and the luxurious Golden Triangle atmosphere was rising. Rodrigo's philosophy is that when it comes to communication with the customer, one should master the perception of the other’s ideas and individuality, saying: “Interpretation is a crucial element”. More important than studying a plan or analysing dimensions is understanding, respecting and projecting dreams and ideas. The client’s personality must be alive in the design creation so that the designer doesn’t superimpose the project, which should ultimately reflect the client. “It is not our wish to be

recognized as modern interior designer company. We serve the client, building spaces and creating settings that allow each client's individuality to shine through”. It is Rodrigo’s understanding that each and every element of his team plays an essential role in a successful project. Working with reliable and competent personnel is imperative as it allows you to create somewhat freely. A more dynamic second phase is planning and on site evaluation. Rodrigo's Interior Design team meets regularly with the clients on site to understand the space and its specificities. His team including Architects and Engineers gather round for precise technical evaluation and, from this carefully filtered information, a design project is born, unique every time. When you look at a project by Juventino Design, you will probably recognize the trademark details and cleanness, however, the owner is unmistakably mirrored in Rodrigo’s project. Because the world of design is dynamic and permeable, Rodrigo follows changes and trends
We asked Rodrigo to show us exactly what he does by taking some pictures before, during and after. Below are a few pictures of before and during the process of his teams' work. on two properties, the following pages show you the amazing transformation...

Vale Do Lobo House Vilamoura Studio closely with watchful eyes. “The interior designer serves as an experienced guide for the owners’ ideas”. 25 years of experience reflect a strong ability to assist on what, how and why certain materials should or should not be used and the capacity to find alternatives that fit the overall design more purposefully, but ultimately provide the clients' initial requests. Selected samples, sketches and technical design plans are presented and explained to the client for approval on a regular bases. The aim is to combine design and feature not privileging one over the other. Fully committed to his passion, Rodrigo has lead various re-design and refurbishment projects. “Being tested to re-create, and give life to soulless and completely impersonal spaces is an enabling factor”. In Re-design projects, nothing is what it was in the first place. Once the team starts peeling off the wallpaper, nothing will ever be the same. From fully electric installations, to wall breaking, through plumbing and masonry. Until delivery date, every detail, no matter how small, is evaluated, tested and supervised, until Rodrigo’s and the clients approval. "We only deliver perfection! We must not settle for less.” More recently Rodrigo found a new love in his professional journey. Building outdoor atmospheres and garden areas creations. It’s a completely different work space. You have a huge variety of elements you need to respect and oversee. “It’s demanding and challenging”.

ooking for a touch of luxury, sheer elegance and indulgence? Then follow many of our international visitors to Vilamoura Marina and join the Team at ‘Just Charters’....We did! We spent the morning upon the Company’s ‘Sunseeker Portofino 53’, named “Só Para Ti” (Just for you). The Motor Yacht is owned by James and Angela Smith from Scotland, who ran the Company from 2007 until 2010 when they returned to Scotland. However, in October 2015 James and Angela made the decision to bring the direction of the Company back into their care following a fall in standards and revenue. Action was taken over the next 5 months and a full team of engineers, electricians, painters and carpenters weaved their expertise and ‘Fairy Godmother Magic’ upon “Só Para Ti” and on the 1st May this year, ‘Just Charters’ was re-launched! Now the vessel sits glistening in the water, ready with her crew to take you wherever you wish to go.... For those of you who enjoy the facts and figures. The Motor Yacht is 56'(ft) 11''(In) in length, has a draught of 4ft, a fuel capacity of 405 gallons, a maximum speed of 35

She has 3 luxurious cabins that can accommodate 6 guests for an overnight charter and for a day or half a day charters is able to take 8 passengers plus crew. Also don’t forget full WIFI for those thinking of a corporate charter or just to show off to your friends on social media! The vessel will take you cruising around the Algarvian Coastline, where you can drop anchor, take a swim, sunbathe or discover the caves in the RIB. Or maybe you wish to take in lunch at one of the world class restaurants on the coast. Nothing is too much trouble for this crew and they do make a fabulous team. The crew are Sarah, Zara and João, who are all fully qualified. They take great pride in bringing both a professional and very personal service to what most of us would consider a luxury excursion. Sarah, Zara and João love the freedom that sailing brings and we found they had many interesting stories to tell us. Sarah drives the Team on dry land and has been involved in boat management and many other aspects of the industry for the last 13 years. Sarah will guide

you through your charter and help you make the most of your time on board. This includes choices from gourmet standard packages from their exclusive partnership with Kate of ‘Fine Dining in Style’. Zara, João and their many years of experience will steer you along the coastline in total safety and share with you their knowledge of the local area. Zara is a qualified Lifeguard with a passion for sailing. In the past she has enjoyed working with horses and stable management. Of course now she manages a ‘horsepower’ of a different kind. João, last but not least, is the third member of the Team who has a background as a commercial fisherman with his father in law, fishing for cuttlefish and squid. João is a keen bee-keeper who has been building his Apiary steadily over the past 3 years in order to gain the standard that he needs to continue his passion as a bee-keeper. Now that you know a bit about the Company, the Crew and the Motor Yacht herself “Só Para Ti”, whatever your reason for chartering, enjoy the experience and trust us, it will definitely be a day to remember for a long time to come.

It's an Auction, but not as we know it!
I
n the early 1600’s a humble bulb brought in its wake one of the most bizarre periods in financial history. An unassuming, studious botanist unwittingly found himself guilty of setting in place scenes akin to the current day frenzy for the latest iphone. Carolus Clisius travelled back from Constantinople with enough tulip bulbs to plant a small garden to research the plant for its medicinal qualities. Sadly he failed to consider his neighbours increasing fascination with the rather splendid flowers that were pushing through the soil on the other side of the fence. Having helped themselves to a few bulbs, they duly sold them and unwittingly set in place the Dutch bulb trade. Over the next few decades tulips became a fad amongst the elite of Holland and prices began to soar. Some of the rarer bulbs were being sold for the equivalent of around 2500 euro
with top traders earning up to 75,000 euro per month! At its crazy height the bulbs were deemed too valuable to be planted so folk were simply putting the plain bulbs out on display! Of course, the bubble had to burst one day, but as anyone who has seen the stunning tulip fields of The Netherlands will know, what a legacy it has left in its wake. From this time of tulip mania came the birth of the Dutch Auction where items are initially offered at a very high price, in excess of what the seller expects to receive. The price drops in increments until a bidder accepts the current price. There is no better place to witness a Dutch Auction than at Aalsmeer Flower Market near Amsterdam where 20 million flowers are sold daily, turned around within a 14 hour time frame! Housed within one of the largest buildings in the world – at around 240 acres – the market sets the official price for flowers and plants around the world.
There is no auctioneer at Aalsmeer – the most important presence in the room is the very large, ominously ticking clock. As a cart of flowers is displayed to all the buyers (usually fixating on around 3 computer screens each) the auction clock starts ticking down from 100. As the time falls so does the price of the cart; the first person to make a bid gets the cart. They have been known to sell within hundredths of a second. It has the air of a rather sombre, humourless game show with no genial host – the entire process is computerised - and can also feel more like gambling than bidding at an auction as hesitate for a milli-second and you may have lost your flowers! So, next time you admire a spray of flowers at the florists remember their exhausting journey – probably from Kenya to Amsterdam to the Algarve within 24 hours – the clock is ticking! Efficient home cooling
EAST
Passive cooling methods for your home (part 1)
homes. This article will explain the major passive and low-energy cooling methods applicable to homes in the Algarve. Generally speaking, the strategy for reducing cooling energy in the home should: a) Block heat from entering b) Minimise heat generated c) Provide ventilation in order move the air and by that reduce the temperature d) Air condition only when needed as a supplement to lowenergy cooling strategies. There are two factors which determine summertime comfort: temperature and humidity. Humidity control is important not just for comfort reasons, but to prevent moisture problems such as mildew growth in closets. The goal of air conditioning is to provide comfort for the occupants of the house, not to maintain a particular temperature setting to appease the thermostat on the wall. If a breeze is passing through the room, your perception of the temperature will be lower than that measured by the thermostat because the movement of air allows your body to lose heat more effectively. HOW TO BLOCK HEAT FROM ENTERING: Insulate, caulk, and weather-strip One of the top cooling strategies is one that you should already be using in your house to provide savings in heating energy. By making sure your home is well-insulated, you will not only lose less heat to the outdoors in winter, but also reduce unwanted heat gains in summer. Caulking and
20
weather-stripping will reduce the infiltration of cold air in winter and the exfiltration of air-conditioned air in summer. Though ventilation is important for your home, it should come from the planned ventilation of fans, open doors and windows rather than the uncontrollable leakage of air through cracks and gaps in the house`s structure. Shading is one of the simplest and most effective methods of blocking heat from entering the home In general, exterior shading is more effective than interior because it prevents the heat entering your house. Interior shading, will block the sunlight from reaching the center of your room, but still allows heat to enter the house, where it is trapped between the shade and the window. Landscaping is an effective and pleasant means of providing shading for your house. An effectively planned landscape will block out the hot summer sun, encourage warming sun to enter the house in winter, deflect the cold winter winds, and channel breezes for cooling in summer. In general, an ideal landscape plan for the Algarve would include trees to the east and west of the house to provide summer shading. In order to allow solar heating in the winter, the vegetation here, should be broad leafed. Exact planned roof overhangs are a simple architectural feature that can be used on the south side of the house to block direct sunlight in summer without reducing the available

s energy costs rise, and the public becomes more aware of the environmental damage arising from current energy use patterns, more people are looking into passive or active solar heating as a way of reducing the amount of energy used in our

SOUTH sunlight in winter. Because the sun travels a higher path in the sky in the summer than in winter, the overhang blocks direct sunlight from entering in summer, while the lower winter sun passes beneath the overhang. Awnings serve the same general function as an overhang, but are more flexible in their application. Made of lightweight materials such as aluminium, canvas, acrylic, or polyvinyl laminate, it is possible for them to span distances of several feet without the need of extra support, thus making it possible for them to provide adequate shade even on the east or west. They are also frequently designed to extend below the top of the window, increasing their shading effectiveness. In the algarve it is important to consider Awnings that are strong enough to withstand the strong winds. Really they should have sensor that closes them automatically at a specific wind load. Not all of the heat in our homes in summer comes from the sun; much of it comes from the occupants of the home and the appliances used. By carefully selecting appliances and the times when they are used, members of the household can help keep the house cooler. Cold dishes in summer is a good idea because lunch and dinner time occur during the hottest part of the day. Cold dishes will be refreshing and cut down on the amount of heat added to the house at mealtimes. Cooking dishes in the evening to be served later shifts the added heat of cooking away from the already warm dinner hour. Consider grilling foods outdoors. When cooking on the stovetop, be sure to cover pots and pans. Less energy will be needed to cook the foods, and less heat and humidity will be
www.simply-algarve.com
added to the house. If boiling in an open pot is necessary, be sure to turn on the kitchen exhaust fan so that it can help remove the humidity introduced by the steam. When doing laundry, wash only full loads and use cold water whenever possible. It will save the energy needed to heat the water, and lessen the addition of warm, moist air in your laundry room. If the schedules permits, moving laundry tasks to the morning or evening hours is helpful, too. Radiant Barriers For roofs which are unshaded, radiant barriers provide another way to block heat from entering your home. A radiant barrier is a layer of aluminium foil placed in an air space between a heat-radiating surface (the roof of your house) and a heatabsorbing surface (the insulation on the floor of your attic). It works to reduce the heat entering your house in two ways: its reflective surface reflects most of the radiant heat striking it, and it will itself emit very little heat. Radiant barriers come in many different forms: single- sided or double-sided foils, foil-faced insulation, and multilayered foil systems with air spaces. Any of these products should perform equally well if properly installed, so the cost of the product and its ease of installation should guide your decision between them. To work properly, the shiny side of the radiant barrier must face an air space. In an attic, this is done by stapling the radiant barrier, shiny side down, to the underside of the roof decking or the roof trusses. Hanging the radiant barrier with its shiny side down prevents dust from accumulating on its surface and reducing its ability to reflect heat. Because of the dust accumulation problem, damage from possible traffic and, most important, the possibility of moisture problems being caused by water vapor trapped beneath the radiant barrier the radiant barrier should not be installed on the floor. his month we found ourselves in the parish of Loulé in the delightful village of Alte. Only a short drive from Boliqueime and well worth a visit. Alte is a typical Algarvian village featuring white washed houses and hand crafted chimneys which contrast with the colourful flower pots, enticing visitors to take a stroll along the narrow streets. Nestling in the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirao, Alte’s population is a mere 2,350 inhabitants. The scenery is stunning, hilly and mountainous. Today the economy is based largely on dry land farming and still relies on practises

handed down through the ages, in addition to the production of arbutus-berry brandy, honey, cheese and sweets. The church lies at the centre of the village, and there are numerous little cafes in the surrounding area for you to relax and soak up the tranquillity. At the eastern end of Alte, past the school are the springs (fontes) for which Alte is well known, and should not be missed. The area around Fonte Peguena (little spring) is quite breathtaking. Tribute is paid here to the local poet, Candido Guerreiro, and you can see some of his work around the village on the tiled plaques and the house he once lived

in. This really is a harmonious setting where the greenery and coolness of the water invites you to enjoy some leisure time or even take a swim; quite breathtaking. Here you’ll find the outdoor amphitheatre too, set into the hillside which overlooks the whole area and hosts concerts during the year. This is the beginning of a series of waterfalls as the water flows down the hillside. We followed the river down through the lovely village. A sight not to miss is the Vicar's waterfall. Follow signs to the cemetery, then take the walk down the hill enjoying the peaceful coutryside. Once there you can admire the falls,

it is also a great place to take a picnic with family or friends. Alte is a true hidden gem! There are a number of trails and tracks which can be followed by the keen walkers out there. As well as being known for producing honey, pottery, wooden handicrafts and having its own goat’s cheese produce, worth noting are the handcrafts made in Alte from the esparto grass, which flags the whole river’s edge. These are sold throughout the Algarve. We hope you get a chance to visit Alte, it is one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve, the perfect place to go for a wonderful day trip.

the Algarve, this could be your daily routine..... but with Brexit taking place, is it the right time to be buying a property? Algarve property prices since the end of 2008 had been continually realigning themselves but since early 2014 they settled at what is deemed to be much more accurate and realistic values. It is no secret that the prices reduced by approximately 30 - 40 percent compared to the listing prices of 2008. The panic sales and the undervalued property sales that were prevalent up to about 2 years ago have been sold and as such the foundations for stability are re-established. Compared to leaving your money in the bank, the Algarve´s appeal as a good investment for property purchases is well founded. The healthier Euro countries are continuing to create a demand for Algarve properties that we haven’t seen for many years. The quantity of sales transactions has been consistently improving during the course of the last 2 years as the urge to buy property in Portugal grows. Now that UK decide to leave the EU, no one can be sure of the long term ramifications but the important thing will be not to panic. The desire to live and holiday in the Algarve will be as strong in the

he long awaited AND talked about UK referendum has been and gone; did you get the outcome you were hoping for? With the UK voting to exit the EU, we initially saw the GBP weaken. This is due to the uncertainly of what ‘Brexit’ means and how it will effect the UK economy and trade relations worldwide. The interbank rate for GBP/EUR got up to 1.31 the night of the referendum, with markets thinking it was going to be a remain vote as well at the book makers. This wasn’t meant to be, as when the news came out we saw the GBP fall against both the EUR and USD. Good news for those buying sterling! The next three months will be volatile with David Cameron resigning in October, and having talks with the EU in the meantime. There are many outcomes to what this referendum means. So as ‘normality’ resumes for the UK market, we will see the normal fluctuations from economic data releases. Things to watch out for in July are: European central bank non-monetary policy meeting, the Bank of England minutes, European central bank rate decision and the US Federal
monetary policy statement at the back end of the month. To discuss any of your options over the coming months, whether you are buying or selling, and would like to know more about what the markets reaction is to the ‘Out’ vote we are available to answer your questions. Brexit: how this may affect you and your business Keep up to date with our Finance expert, chartered accountant Ricardo Chaves from All Finance Matters If you live in Portugal permanently, but haven’t officially registered your presence yet, maybe now is the time to register.

F
ollowing the announcement that the UK has voted to leave the EU, some clients have showed their concern about how this may affect their future as property or business owners in Portugal. First of all it’s important to reiterate that nothing will change immediately; the process of UK leaving the EU may take up to two years, so in the meantime nothing will be different for those UK nationals living or owning business or property in Portugal. I have a holiday home, what are the implications of this? From the tax point of view, for those that are second home owner, there is almost no difference between the EU citizens and non EU citizens. The only difference is that all non EU citizens need to appoint a fiscal representative, so this may be the case in future for those that are UK residents and hold or want to have a Portuguese fiscal number. What about taxation? Portugal and UK have a double tax convention in place since 1968. This is not foreseen to change in the near future or to be affected by the result of this referendum. So if you are resident in Portugal, you will continue to be obliged to declare in Portugal, all your income. If however you are nonresident, you should only declare in Portugal, any income you may have from Portuguese source and this applies obviously to your property lets. The tax to pay, is the same irrespective of if you are a EU citizen or not, and this also applies obviously to your property rates (IMI). What about the Capital gains tax from property sales? The only possible impact will be on the reinvestment possibility. At the moment all full time residents can reinvest the proceedings of the sale of their primary residency, in order to avoid or minimize the payment of capital gain tax. This reinvestment can be made in any EU country, up to two years after the sale of their primary residence in Portugal has occurred. This means that if the UK effectively leaves the EU, anyone selling their primary residency here, to return to the UK, may no longer use that purchase to offset against capital gains if and after UK leaving EU. For those that have a second home and are non-residents there will be no difference. I live in Portugal full time and have a business here: what will happen now? Those that live and or work in Portugal, should firstly make sure they are correctly registered as residents. It’s important to highlight that from the tax point of view, the address you have at the tax office, determines if you are resident or not. So it’s important if you do live and work
here permanently, to make sure that you are correctly registered, integrated in the health system, etc. If you live permanently in Portugal, but haven’t officially registered your presence yet, maybe now is the time to register and why not opt for the Non Habitual Residence status? This is a special regime that allows you to become tax resident in Portugal, with several tax exemptions and benefits. Those that own a business in Portugal and are worried about the exchange rate and how this may affect the number of UK tourists in Portugal, please note that the influx of tourists in Portugal has grown considerably over the last 3 years and this has been boosted by the increase from several different nationalities, such as the French, Belgian, Spanish, German, etc. So although the UK tourists are very important to the Portuguese touristic industry, in case of a huge depression of the pound, Portugal may benefit from being a less expensive destination, compared to others and also in most cases, safer. In conclusion, if you were thinking of buying or selling your property in the Algarve, please do not change your decision yet, just because of the result of this referendum. It’s advisable to look for the risks and allow some changes, but life won’t necessarily be much different after today. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your personal situation, to find out whether you meet the criteria to qualify as a non-habitual resident (NHR) or what is your capital gains liability, in case you decide to sell your property. DISCLAIMER: Please note that this text has been written on the 24th of June. It’s still too early to make any drastic decisions or to jump to conclusions. The markets and the politics are very volatile and the only thing advisable is to plan ahead and search the assistance of local experts.

GARDENS
Annuals for hot climates
Annuals add splashes of colour to your garden all year long, but you must choose plants that are suited to your climate in order to have lush, thriving flowers.
M
any gardeners that have a hot and dry climate to deal with often shy away from colourful annuals as they think they will not do well without constant watering and will require too much maintenance. There are, however, many annuals that love just such a climate. A combination of the varieties of annuals, can be a great choice for those people living in hot, dry climates. These heat and drought tolerant annuals provide a wide variety of colours, sizes, shapes and textures, enough to meet the needs of any gardener. Even with annuals that like a hot, dry climate, gardening in such conditions can be challenging. Water restrictions can thwart efforts to provide adequate moisture to your plants so you need to be cognitive of the usual restrictions in your area. No matter what your climate, matching the types of flowers you plant, to the climate in which they will be growing, is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy garden and a healthy environment. Annuals provide season long colour to your garden, and can be started from seed or purchased pre-grown from your local garden centre. Most types of annuals can be started from seed by using seed boxes. Start your seeds indoors, in well drained soil and make sure they have plenty of light as well as enough water. After the seedlings have had a good start indoors, they are then replanted outside in the garden. For those who do not want to grow their annuals from seed, seedlings can be bought and transplanted immediately. This approach is generally more expensive, but after planting your flowers, you get to enjoy them sooner. When it comes to putting your annuals in the garden, make sure they are planted with the tops of the roots just below the soil surface. If you have bought pregrown plants, make sure that the entire container is removed, along with any paper or plastic. If your seedlings are in peat pots, then remove the top edge of the pot before planting. If the seedlings have any buds or flowers on them, they should be pinched off
44
when the seedlings are planted. This will promote greater branching, and help the plant grow stronger. After the seedlings have been transplanted, the plants should be given a good watering. It is particularly important to provide lots of water in the first few weeks, since the plants are still developing their root structure during this time. It is essential to provide adequate moisture to get the plants off to a good start. Even after planting, most annuals require from 2.5 to 4 cm of water every week to thrive. Even more water may be needed in very hot climates. Annuals need to establish a deep root system, and they can only do this, if they receive a sufficient amount of water. Deep root growth comes from thorough and deep watering and will produce lush thriving plants. The best methods for achieving this deep and thorough watering, are soaker hoses and drip irrigation. In addition, these methods of watering avoid water splashes on the foliage, which can serve as pathways to fungal infections. Another important aspect to healthy annuals is proper mulching. Mulch the bed before you put the plants in with 5 to 7.5 cm of pine bark or pine straw. Mulching serves to conserve the moisture contained in the soil and to reduce the growth of weeds. A good layer of mulch will shade the seeds of weeds and prevent them from sprouting. Mulch provides a natural form of weed control and thereby eliminates the need for hand weeding or harsh chemicals to control the growth of weeds. Different annuals have different fertilization needs. When you buy your seeds or plants, find out what those are and make note. Then, during the growing season, make sure you provide the fertilization that is necessary for each type of plant. One of my favourite plants to grow in a hot climate is the African daisy, which is the name commonly used to describe a group of different bedding plants. All those which come from South Africa, sport a mass of daisy-like flowers (unsurprisingly!), and require similar conditions to grow successfully. Daisy flowers, typical of the Asteraceae botanical family, create a clear mood and design direction. They appear out of place in lush, tropical
www.simply-algarve.com

45
AUCTIONS
settings, typified by plants with massive leaves and large garish flowers. They are more suited in my view to the sparser, restrained style of a Mediterranean, dry climate garden. At least three genera answer to the name of African daisy, with a number of species and varieties belonging to each genus. These are Arctotis, Osteospernum, and Dimorphotheca. All are hardy to light frosts, are fairly pest resistant, and must be grown in well-drained soil. While requiring regular water through the long hot summer, they do best, especially in heavy soils, with deep, occasional irrigation. Therefore, in their cultural needs, as well as in design terms, they associate better with Mediterranean type plants, than with tropical or sub tropical ones. All need full sun to flower. Arctotis hybrids The most common Arctotis found in gardens are hybrids that grow 30cm (1ft) high and wide. The foliage varies according to the variety from a dull green, to bluish-grey. The leaves are slightly rough and hairy. The symmetrical
flowers are some 7cm (3in) wide, in shades of white, pink, yellow, orange, and red. Arctotis is most effective when massed as a ground cover, but is not to be relied on in cold-winter areas or boggy soil. The plants tend to become bare and leggy, so regular clipping is essential. My suggestion is to prune away the flowers even when about 25% remain on the plant.
Osteospernum fruticosum;
This is a trailing plant, about 25cm (10 in) tall, covering about a meter in width. It is somewhat course and untidy in appearance, and so is unsuitable for small, intimate niches. It can be excellent, though, in spaces where a sprawling look is in order. The flowers are very similar in shape and size as those of Arctotis, coming in purple or white. To maintain bushiness, regular clipping is important, as is the occasional cutting-back to growing points towards the woody base of the plant. This should only be carried out during the growing season. A taller version of this African daisy is Osteospernum ecklonis. There are a number
of varieties of this species available, most notably the relatively compact “Passion”. This variety has pink, purple, or white flowers, with sky blue centres.
Dimorphotheca sinuata ;
This African daisy, sometimes known as cape marigold, is a fine annual for warm summer, and mild winter climates, creating a lovely floral display in white, pink or purple at the end of the winter and the spring. It could however, become invasive in certain areas. African daisy plants associate best in the flowerbed with plants belonging to the same botanical family; the similar flower shapes creating unity in the garden composition. Excellent companions for them amongst others are Felicia, Bidens, Chrysanthemums, Gazania, and Brachycome. Now I hope this helps with some ideas for you to create that extra piece of colour in your garden. But please remember, don’t be afraid to try any of these annuals in your flower beds, because with the right plants your garden will have a bright vibrant feel all summer long. -Mark O'shaughnessy

GOLF
This month's tip from resident professional at Monte Rei Golf and Country Club Bradley Dye.
SPORT
The importance of understanding different lies
N
ot all golf courses around the world are flat, and being able to adapt to different lies is a key part of the golf game. Not being able to play the variety of shots will result in higher
scores. When it comes to uneven ground or a sloped lie, golfers tend to keep their routine and swing the same. This is a mistake! When playing a down slope, it’s vital to take the slope into consideration and make the necessary adjustments. Don’t fight the slope! A good routine for effectively playing down hill shots is: Reducing club selection, as at impact the clubface will de-loft, resulting in a low trajectory. The total carry distance of the ball may be less, but the total distance will generally increase. Choosing the correct club is essential.
1
2 3 4
Stand wider for extra stability to maintain balance. Lean with the slope to achieve the same spine angle as you would have on a flat lie.
Position the ball further back in your stance so at impact you hit the bottom of the arc. Following this routine and learning how to play from the difficult lies will increase your chance of lowering scores and reducing your handicap. Sports News EIGHT PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS TOGETHER WITH TWO CLUB OFFICIALS AND FOUR DIER DELIGHT
W
hen Eric Dier was a young schoolboy in the Algarve little could he have imagined that one day he would be talked about as a future England captain. Young Eric and his family lived near Almancil before moving to Lisbon where he was spotted by Sporting and subsequently moved to their world renowned Alcochete Academy. Five members of the current Portugal international team - João Moutinho, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma, Rui Patrício and Cristiano Ronaldo - also graduated from the academy. Dier had a loan spell at Everton before returning to Lisbon. Prior to making his reserve and senior debuts in 2012 he had captained all Sporting youth teams. Just two years later he moved to Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract for a fee of €6m. The self assured 22 year-old was ‘Man-of-the Match’ in his first competitive international and capped a fine display with a stunning free-kick. Dier is one of those guys with the temperament
to adapt and rise to the biggest of challenges. On his debut for Sporting in the Primeira Liga against SC Braga, three seasons ago, after just four minutes he set up what proved to be the winning goal and in his next appearance he scored the equaliser at Moreirense. Twelve years ago it was another young talent making his mark on the competition, held in Portugal that year. 19-yearold Cristiano Ronaldo announced his Euros arrival by coming off the bench to head his first goal of the competition, in a surprise 2-1 defeat by Greece. Ronaldo broke into Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team during the tournament and headed the winner against Netherlands in the semifinals. But his competition would end where it started, with a shock defeat to winners Greece in the final. Dier has a long way to go to emulate Ronaldo but the discipline and respect he learnt at the Sporting Academy will hold him in good stead as he continues his career.

The final stages of the Portugal League Cup have been selected for this pioneering initiative that could well revolutionise football. Initially the technology will only be applied to key incidents concerning goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties. Other countries joining Portugal in the experiment will be Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, Australia and the USA.
