The Chaplain, Fr Bob Bates, says “The monthly evening service has been well supported and a core group of regular worshippers has built up over the last 14 months, and we have had two wedding blessings this year with another planned for October. We worship at Nossa Senhora do Carmo in the grounds of the Vila Gale Albacora Hotel at 6:00pm on the second Sunday of each month and all are welcome to join us for a peaceful service of prayer and song to end the weekend. “We are particularly looking forward to 9th October, and our service - “Through the year with King James and Charles Wesley” – a service to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, with readings and (Wesley’s) hymns for each of the Church’s seasons, so a whole year in one evening! Our Methodist friends in particular may well enjoy this service, as will anyone who loves to sing the wonderful Wesley hymns, and loves the traditional poetry of the KJV. Monarch abolishes debit card fees

Portuguese health minister Paulo macedo has said that the building of the proposed hospital central do algarve is a “national priority” but the delay in starting work is due to the Government’s financial problems. “this hospital is a priority but we must have funding available to start it,” said Paulo macedo. he said that the importance of building the new hospital is very high and that the project is at the top of the list of investments for the country, but the financial plan to turn the project into reality is still missing. the project of hospital central do algarve was due to have started in 2007. at the end of last year, the former government led by José sócrates had stated that the project was planned to be finished in 2013. the hospital is planned to be built between Faro and loulé, near the algarve stadium, and is expected to have 549 beds.

Monarch, the scheduled airline, announced in June of this year a commitment to transparent and simple pricing. in a move that will put pressure on its rivals to follow its lead, monarch has eliminated debit card fees and has introduced a fixed fee for all credit card bookings. customers electing to pay using a debit card now incur no card charge fees, whilst customers electing to pay using a credit card will be charged a €12 fee, regardless of the value of the transaction or the number of people travelling, providing an upfront, transparent and simple to understand charging policy. in addition to a commitment to transparent and simple pricing, monarch has also introduced a “build your own class” concept of flying. customers who are looking for the cheapest possible flight will be able to fly on monarch, with an allocated seat, for a fare that is competitive against the no-frills carriers. add-ons, such as hot meals, seats with extra leg room and extra baggage allowance, are offered at the point of booking for additional small sums. the concept enables monarch’s customers to choose the services they want, without being obliged to pay for anything they don’t want.

Closed Wednesdays. english greeting cards available, all only 2€ ihave just read a fascinating book in which one tiny part was giving an explanation as to why bees might be disappearing. the book is based on the fact that everything has a vibration and how this effects everything to do with our life. an amazing book, it has opened my eyes to everything i have added to my life in the last 20 years, mobile phones, wi-fi, etc. could this explain a lot of things? read for yourselves and get the book, blinded by science by mathew silverstone. the disappearing bees has been a concern for those who are aware of the situation for some time. Where have all the bees gone and why are they disappearing. Well bees are disappearing because they are dying. Why? matthew silverstone spent 2 years researching a cure for his son's cronic fatigue. during this time he discovered many other things along the way, including the fact that everything in the world vibrates, and this has a direct effect on every living organism. Disappearing Bees are getting lost here lies the problem; bees at the moment are dying in their millions. Yet they are not dying in their hive or near to their hive, the bees are dying because they are disappearing. hives are not full of sick bees, they are empty, bees simply leave their hive one day and fail to return. scientists don’t know where they go or why they disappear. common sense would surely offer up a simple explanation for this, the bees must surely be getting lost; there cannot be any other explanation as to why a bee would fail to return to its hive, let alone all of the bees. Disappearing Bees - How can they get lost? so how can a bee get lost? it was a very sad fact to discover that most experts do not know that bees are in fact homing creatures. scientists readily accept that lots of other insects and birds have homing abilities, but not bees. if they did acknowledge this fact then it would be easy to figure out why the bees are disappearing. i discovered the fact that bees have homing abilities when i read in a bee keeping journal written in 1902 about a bee keeper who accidentally moved his hive to clean it whilst the bees were out foraging, only to discover to his horror that every single bee that returned landed on the spot where the hive used to be and died on the ground, lost. the hive had only been moved 2 metres away and yet the bees could not find it. how is this possible? almost every bee specialist today suggests that bees use chemical and visual navigation signals to find their way home, but if that were the case they would have been able to find the hive BeesDisappearing Eastalgarve_Issue33.indd 7 05/09/2011 01:46

Health if it had only moved 2 metres away. the only solution to why the bees landed on the empty space where the hive used to be located lies in the idea that the bees were using a navigation system that told them exactly where their hive used to be. this works on the basis of a natural “internal satellite navigation” ability similar to the one we now have in all of our cars and mobile phones. bees use the natural electromagnetic signals that are emitted by the earth to navigate home. The logical Cause of the Disappearing Bees so, let’s look at the bee’s disappearance logically. Would the most obvious cause of the bee’s inability to navigate home be most likely to be caused by a navigational issue and nothing else? the one obvious issue that could cause an interference with electromagnetic signals could be other electromagnetic signals. this seems blinding obvious to me. every single police force and army in the world use jamming devices, we know they work, and we know how they work. We can artificially emit jamming signals to interfere with existing electromagnetic signals. so why do we not think that this is accidentally what we are doing to the bees - jamming their signals so that they can’t find their way home. all you have to do is think about how many mobile phone masts have been introduced and compare that to the timing of the bees disappearance to quickly realise this is blatantly the only reason why bees are disappearing. Research into the Disappearing Bees do you want to know something else that is terrible? there is virtually no research whatsoever being conducted at the moment into this relationship. it seems that it is not politically correct to do so. therefore, scientists will carry on with their cosy funding regime looking into issues such as viruses and pesticides that will never find the solution to this problem. in the meantime the countryside is being devastated by the lack of pollinisation that the bees normally undertake. if you want to learn more about the disappearing bees, how everything vibrates, the health of plants and how they react to people around them, more about water and its properties, a long-forgotten but fascinating scientist sir Jagadis chandra bose an indian scientist who invented machines to make plants grow at a faster rate - and worked - then you will want to read more on these theories that will go beyond the norm. is it crack science? read blinded by science, and you be the judge! read the book - it will change your life!

now there are three more young ladies ready to tackle your hair and beauty needs. cara and her professional staff treat all their clients as one big, happy family. so there were celebrations when two new additions arrived over the past few months. three year-old alfie now has a baby sister ruby, much to the delight of cara and husband mark. cara has been able to return to the salon on four days a week. “mark is a wonderful father and the children adore him,“ said cara as she welcomed yet another new customer to the salon. cara, who is thoroughly enjoying life with her two young off-springs, said, “the time i spend with my family is very valuable to me but i look forward to coming to work, where our small but dedicated team create a friendly and happy environment.” the other newcomer to the hair & beauty salon family is stylist tanya cornish from torbay, devon. tanya has swapped the english riviera for the sun drenched algarve. “my mother was a hairdresser so i think it is in my blood. i get great satisfaction from making people feel good about themselves and increasing their self esteem.” tanya, who is a fully trained stylist with five years experience added, “there is a style to suit each individual and my job is to listen to clients expectations and give honest advice as to how we can work together to achieve those maims.”ichelle mccreadie has become an energetic and valued member of the team since joining as a beauty therapist last year. michelle trained at scotland’s prestigious mary reid international beauty academy before working for steiner of london where she was quickly promoted to spa manager on the Princess & carnival cruise lines. “it has been an exhilarating year and our monthly specials have been a great success,” said michelle who has thoroughly enjoyed the long hot summer. “it has been great but the sun and wind can play havoc with your skin, so it is important to seek professional advice. We can assess your needs and advise on suitable treatments.” definitely a case of five star service without the five star prices. chris Wright

uring the weekend there is a small entrance charge of 2 euros being made and donated to the Algarve charity, ‘Madraguda.’ The gallery is providing visitors with a complimentary glass of Barranco Longo wine and summer savouries prepared by celebrity chef, Jonnie of Bistro des Z’Artes. Rachel Ramirez has an artistic and academic background graduating with an MA from London’s Royal College of Art. Utilising a traditional Japanese process known as ‘gyotaku’ she uses the forms of actual underwater plants and animals as the print materials for her pictures. Producing flawless replicas of the originals, the images are aesthetically beautiful and scientifically accurate. Her original oriental prints can be seen at museums and libraries in the USA, Japan, Egypt, Malaysia and Portugal, as well as at the British Library and Tate Britain. Over the years she has received scholarships from prestigious organisations and in 2009 she was awarded a grant by the ‘Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.’ She is currently a PhD student at Porto University researching ‘gyotaku’ and its relationship with art and science. Uniquely, her compositions combine a high degree of artistry alongside scientific precision, resulting in awe-inspiring images of underwater scenes that are available at surprisingly affordable prices. The gallery showcases paintings by a collective of more than 30 international artists. Also on show: - handmade ceramics, marble and bronze sculptures and other artistic items. www.eastalgarvemag.comPage 12 People We all have some aches and pains from time to time, and for most of us they disappear quite quickly. This month we were delighted to meet up with Duarte Arrais who runs his Holistic Therapy practice in Fuzeta, specialising in helping those of us not fortunate enough for those ailments to pass naturally. Duarte was originally born in Tavira and began his studies in Lisbon in 1997, becoming a fully qualified Physiotherapist after 4 years. He started his studies in Osteopathy in Spain in 2001, completing an intensive course in that year, whilst commuting back and forth to Tavira, continuing his works in clinics throughout the East Algarve. During this time he became fascinated in Global Postural Reeducation (R.P.G), specialising in the eyes, neck, scoliosis, and sport injuries. Duarte believes that not all patients benefit from any one treatment alone, and performs realignment articulation, (the same as osteopathy but using more gentle methods and patient’s muscles). Duarte has accomplished so much in a very short time, studying and working hard and is now the official physiotherapist for F.I.F.A. looking after the the countries top referees. The latest treatment he offers is Iridology. A photograph is taken of the iris which helps diagnose any potential problems or sicknesses that may be in early stages or more advanced, after a consultation with Duarte, he provides advice and help to his Duartepatients.isalso qualified to provide diet programmes to combine with his treatment. He explained to us that “A patient suffering with pain in the right shoulder would normally be treated with physical manipulation. This may not always be the correct solution. An inflamed liver would add HandsthatHeal!

We meet Meet Duarte from the Fisioclube, Fuzeta, specialising in Holistic therapy and his passion for healing using Global Postural Re-education. Also find out more about Iris Diagnosis.

more stress to the right shoulder due to the increased weight, therefore a change of diet to reduce the swelling of the liver would cure the shoulder pain. Likewise pain in the left shoulder can indicate a problem within the stomache, again, the right treatment together with dietary advice will help enormously”. When asked, Duarte explained his favourite treatment is R.P.G. (muscle manipulation and stretching of the body). Using this he can identify the problem area for his patient. Then with his wealth of knowledge and experience he can decide what the correct treatment should be for the individual patient. He has a 90 per cent success rate, almost certainly because as he explained “If a treatment is not working after one or two visits, I am able to try an alternative method, not wasting patients time or money.” His aim is to find the correct solution as quickly as Duarte'spossible.”objective is to continue to study and learn as many different methods as possible, to reduce the amount of treatments it takes to help his patients recover. Many thanks to Duarte for taking time from his busy schedule to talk to us, we wish him every success. Also detected in the Iris are problems with the Pineal Gland, (the gland that maintains beoccurredevenorpain, issues, gallintestines, cholesterol, hormones),liver, stomach, bladder, bronchialsleeppatterns, headaches, liverlungproblems, traumathathasinlifecanidentified.

A digital photograph is taken of both eyes, a very short process taking about 5 minutes. The photograph is examined closely, and with the help of a computer program any potential problems are highlighted. The Iris contains an enormous amount of information about us, detectable at very early stages. Duarte will then prescribe a dietary plan to curb any problems continuing.

The owners of Janes new shop were looking for the right type of business to occupy their premises. They came in to see her and asked if she would consider moving Casa das Portas to their shop. Ten years earlier Jane had wondered who owned the building, and in an idle moment had thought it would make a wonderful gallery. It had been closed for around eight years, most recently being used as a tailor shop. Today you can still see the original tailor’s tables which were left when Jane took over. Jane decided to keep her first shop open, and use the new space to offer larger pictures and also good quality, hand made, Portuguese designed products. In its time as a tailor’s shop, the film makers of “Kiss Me”, Taviras delightfully unique gift shop opens their second store, in a perfect location on the Roman Bridge.

ane Gibbin opened Casa das Portas in 2007, in an old shoe repair shop not far from the Roman bridge in Tavira. She had a fascination and love of Tavira and its many amazing doors. It became a mission to preserve these rapidly vanishing treasures by photographing them. Jane produced limited prints and canvases of these extraordinary images of the town. They were an immediate success, both with the local community and Thetourists.Bridge is of course steeped in history and one of the most beautiful features of the town. Casa das Portas (The house of doors) is now proud to have their second shop in a building located at the very end of the bridge itself; Casa das Portas, Sobre a Ponte. This building dates back to the 12th/13th century and was originally part of a tidal mill, then the toll house for the Roman Bridge. We spoke with Jane who filled us in on how she came to have such a beautiful location for her new shop.

Page 18 I f you are a homeowner interested in optimizing your rental income you should take time to analyse if you are still on track to achieve your goal. Many of you know, as a villa manager I prefer to do this during September of each year. This gives me ample time to make adjustments if and when needed, to implement them before October and be ready for next year. Uncertainty from the continuation of the sovereign debt crisis and implementation of austerity measures has added to a general sense of nervousness and increased frugality amongst consumers. Add the exceptionally good weather conditions in Northern Europe in the months of May and June and it is clear why this year’s booking pattern has been more erratic versus previous years. However, a good marketing mix and active management of ‘early deal’ and ‘last minute’ discount scheme can make the difference between doing fine or doing great in difficult times. Multi channel marketing is a combination of traditional means of advertising in daily news papers and holiday magazines, internet marketing such as having your own website and holiday rental portals and making use of the network of contacts of a well established villa management agency. Depending on the type of property you own some channels work better than others. The right mix will make it

We’ll take care of you and your house as we would our own. PROPERTYMANAGEMENTPROPERTYRENTALS work for you, but none of them by itself is the Holy Grail. If you have been relying only on one source for your bookings, the chances are the number of weeks booked this year is lower than the year before. Some homeowners are reluctant to set an annual budget for the marketing of their home even though it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A budget of Euro 400 to 600 will be more than enough, in most cases this is less than a week of rent in high season. Not investing in the marketing of your home is a bit odd. Having spent a lot of money to buy your place in the sun, then fit it out with many desirable features and furnish it to a very high standard in keeping with its luxury surroundings, you basically have gone out of your way to make your property attractive to renters. Except you are not telling Ifthem!you are marketing but are not getting the results you expected, there may be other reasons. Either there is something wrong with the marketing mix or the pricing of your property. Sometimes simply changing the photos will do the trick. It is best to address this issue as soon a possible because a week of lost rental income will be lost forever, unlike the inventory in a bookstore which you can always sell or discount the very next day. 5 As palms affected by leaf rot and bud rot diseases are more prone to weevil infestation, they are to be treated with suitable fungicides; after that, application of any insecticide to prevent egg laying by weevils is essential. 6 Destroy all dead palms harbouring the pest by cutting and burning. MEChaniCal ContRol Dead palms or palms beyond recovery are to be split open, exposing the different stages of the pest present inside and the debris, including the out logs and crowns, hoSt: all palms are probably suitable for the development of the Red palm Weevil, which has been found on the following palms: Coconut palm Date NigbongpalmpalmOilpalm Ornamental palm Palmyra palm Royal palm Sago palm Sedang palm Sugar palm Talipot palm Wild date (toddy) palm

CoCoon

All stages (egg, larva, pupa and adult) are spent inside the palm itself and the life cycle cannot be completed elsewhere. The females deposit about 300 eggs in separate holes or injuries on the palm. Eggs hatch in 2 to 5 days into legless grubs which bore into the interior of the palms, moving by peristaltic muscular contractions of the body and feed on the soft succulent tissues, discarding all fibrous material. The larval period varies from 1 to 3 months. The grubs pupate in elongate oval, cylindrical cocoons made out of fibrous strands. At the end of the pupation period which lasts 14 to 21 days, the adult weevils emerge. Thus the life cycle is about 4 months. EggS The eggs are creamy white in colour, long and oval in shape. The average size of an egg is 2.6 mm long and 1.1 mm wide. laRVa The full grown larva is conical in shape and is a legless fleshy grub. It appears yellowish brown, while the newly hatched larva is yellowish white in colour, with a brown head. The length of the full grown larva is 50 mm and the width is 20 mm. The head is brown in colour and bent downwards. Mouth parts are well developed and strongly chitinized, which enable the grub to burrow into the trunk. However, the grub requires a moist environment.

ContRol pRoCESSES Field sanitation and cultural practices are one of the important components to prevent weevil 1infestation. Clean the crown of palms periodically to prevent decaying of organic debris in leaf axils.

Page 34 www.eastalgarvemag.com

When about to pupate the larva constructs a cocoon of fibres from palm. The cocoon is oval in shape, with an average length of 60 mm and a width of 30 mm. pupa The pupa is at first cream coloured but later turns brown. The head is bent ventrally, the rostrum reaching the tibiae of the first pair of legs. The antennae and eyes are quite prominent. The elytra and wings are brought down ventrally, passing underneath the femora and tibiae of the second pair of legs, overlapping the third pair of legs and meeting in the middle of the abdomen. The average length of the pupa is 35 mm and the width is 15 mm. adult The adult weevil is a reddish brown cylinder with a long prominent curved snout. It varies considerably in size and is about 35 mm in length and 12 mm in width. The head and rostrum comprise about one third of the total length. The mouth parts are elongated in the form of a slender snout or rostrum, which bears a small pair of biting jaws at the end and a pair of antennae near the base. The rostrum is reddish brown dorsally, and ventrally it is dark brown. In the male the dorsal apical half of the snout is covered with a pad of short brownish hairs; the snout of the female is bare, more slender, curved and a little longer. The antennae consist of the scape and funicle. The eyes are black and separated on both sides of the base of the rostrum. The pronotum is reddish brown in colour and has a few black spots. These black spots are variable in shape, size and number. The elytra are dark red, strongly ribbed longitudinally, and do not cover the abdomen completely. The wings are brown in colour and the weevils are capable of strong flight. The male weevil has a tuft of soft reddish brown hairs along the dorsal aspect of the snout; it is absent in the female. What aRE thE SignS oF dEtECtion Early detection of infestation of the Red Palm Weevil is difficult as the larvae that damage the palm live inside the stems and base of leaves. Unfortunately, symptoms of infestation are not visible until it is often too serious for treatment. Signs of infestation include: leaves of the adult palm crown wilt and die; holes in the leaf bases; chewed fibre at the base of stem or edge of leaves. Apparently, by the time these external symptoms are observed the damage is usually sufficient to kill the tree and if you place your ear against the palm you can hear the lavae munching away!

4 Cutting of steps in palms for easy climbing is to be avoided, as this provides sites for egg laying by weevils.

2 Avoid cuts and injuries. 3 When green leaves are cut, cut them 120 cm away from the base.

Mark O’Shaughness y Gardens are to be burned. trapping the Weevils: Trapping the weevils and destroying them is another method by which weevil populations can be brought down. BiologiCal ContRol: No effective biological agent, which can be employed for the biological control of the pest has been found. ChEMiCal ContRol : preventive. The wounds produced on palms due to cultural practices and other wounds are favourite sites of oviposition by the female weevils. Treatment of such wounds and soaking of palms with insecticides can be an effective way to prevent RPW entry to palms through wounds. Curative. Once infestation is detected in a palm, curative control has to be applied. If the infestation is in the crown, remove the affected and damaged portions and apply insecticide suspension. In case of infestation in the trunk, the infested part should be cleaned and plugged with a mixture of mud and insecticide. The only effective control is to cut down all infested palms and destroy them at an early stage so the nests of larvae cannot hatch and repopulate an area. The trunk of the palm needs to be split open and all stages destroyed. Burning the head does not kill the stages in the middle of the trunk. Thus, the whole trunk should be chopped and Allburned.these methods of control and eradication are best left to experts and for that reason should you have any palms that look like they are showing signs of infection then I would recommend contacting someone like the Palm Doctor at www.palmdoc. eu who can advise and deal with your problem safely and quickly preventing any further cross contamination.

Aircraft pollution

In regulating aircraft and airports, several compelling interests com pete: safety, international com merce, and environmental quality. Of these, safety issues receive per haps most of the attention, garner ing large headlines in the wake of airplane accidents. But the issue of the effect of airports on the environ ment and human health has heated up in recent years as public interest and citizen groups contest airport expansion on environmental and health grounds, and the airline and airport industries attempt to meet increasingly stringent regulations in these Airportsareas.are known to be major sources of noise, water, and air pol lution. They pump carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere, as well as dump toxic chemicals—used to deice airplanes during winter storms— into waterways. But determining the extent of airplanes' contribution to local, national, and international levels of pollution is difficult—cars and airplanes entering and leaving airports produce roughly equiva lent quantities of ozone precursors. Auxiliary power units (APUs), little jet engines in the planes' tails that power appliances while the planes are at the gate, and ground support vehicles also produce quantities of pollutants. And competing local and national political forces make airport pollution hard to regulate; much of the air pollution is local, but auto mobile and airplane emissions are regulated both nationally and inter Thenationally.growth of air traffic further frus trates mitigation of environmental problems. Air traffic is expected to double nationally by the year 2017 and internationally by 2020, accord ing to the Federal Aviation Adminis tration (FAA). Ref: Holzman D. Our friend Chris Mayer at the Daily Reckoning blog adds a few words here: “The center of aviation has now moved officially from Europe and North America to the Asian markets. It’s the biggest market today and it’s going to grow at the fastest rate, and unless something very unusual hap pens, it will continue to be the largest market.” — Vice President of Mar keting for Boeing, Randy Tinseth Fuel is the largest expense for the air line industry — at 30% of operating costs. And the airline industry faces pressures to cut costs. Recently, the Air Transport Association forecast that the airline industry would make $4 billion this year, down 78% from last year. So there is pressure (again) to cut Airlinescosts.have already cut staffing costs. You can see this in labor costs as a percentage of operating costs. They now stand at about a quarter of costs compared to 35% in 2001. Air lines have also been smarter about pricing and routes, as airfare rates have stayed up. The big opportunity for the airline industry, though, is to cut into that fuel cost number. The way to do that is with more fuel- efficient aircraft. A new A320, for instance, saves more than 25% on fuel costs compared with the older MD-80, and therefore

Twenty years ago, 72% of all air traffic was on carriers from North America or Europe. Today, only 55% is. Boeing forecasts that figure will fall to 40% by 2030. F or the past two centuries and more, life in Britain has been governed by a simple concept: tomorrow will be better than today. Black August has given us a glimpse of a dystopia, one in which the financial markets buckle and the cities burn. Like Scrooge, we have been shown what might be to come unless we change our Thereways.were glimmers of hope amid last week's despair. Neighbourhoods rallied round in the face of the looting. It was chastening to see consumerism laid bare. We have seen the future and we know it sucks. All of which is cause for cautious optimism – provided the right lessons are drawn. Lesson number one is that the financial and social causes are linked. Lesson number two is that what links the City banker and the looter is the lack of restraint, the absence of boundaries to bad behaviour. Lesson number three is that we ignore this at our peril.

The fixed exchange rate system has been replaced by a hybrid system in which some currencies are pegged and others float. The currencies in the eurozone, for example, are fixed against each other, but the euro floats against the dollar, the pound and the Swiss franc. The Hong Kong dollar is tied to the US dollar, while Beijing has operated a system under which the yuan is allowed to appreciate against the greenback but at a rate much slower than economic fundamentals would suggest. The system is an utter mess, particularly since almost every country in the world is now seeking to manipulate its currency downwards in order to make exports cheaper and imports dearer. This is clearly not possible. Sir Mervyn King noted last week that the solution to the crisis involved China and Germany reflating their economies so that debtor nations like the US and Britain could export more. Progress on that front has been painfully slow, and will remain so while the global currency system remains so dysfunctional. The solution is either a fully floating system under which countries stop manipulating their currencies or an attempt to recreate a new fixed exchange rate system using a basket of world currencies as its Currencyanchor.markets lost their anchor in 1971 when the US suspended dollar convertibility. Over the years, financial markets have lost their moral anchor, engaging not just in reckless but fraudulent behaviour. According to the US economist James Galbraith, increased complexity was the cover for blatant and widespread wrongdoing. Looking back at the sub-prime mortgage scandal, in which millions of Americans were mis-sold home loans, Galbraith says there has been a complete breakdown in trust that is impairing the hopes of economic "Thererecovery.was a private vocabulary, well-known in the industry, covering these loans and related financial products: liars' loans, Ninja loans (the borrowers had no income, no job or assets), neutron loans (loans that would explode, destroying the people but leaving the buildings intact), toxic waste (the residue of the securitisation process). I suggest that this tells you that those who sold these products knew or suspected that their line of work was not 100% Finally, honest.there has been a big change in the way that the spoils of economic success have been divvied up. The implicit social contract under which the individual was guaranteed a job and a decent wage that rose as the economy grew has broken down. Growth is less rapid than it was 40 years ago, and the gains have disproportionately gone to companies and the very rich. In the UK, the professional middle classes, particularly in the southeast, are doing fine, but below them in the income scale are people who have become more dependent on debt as their real incomes have stagnated. Next are the people on minimum wage jobs, which have to be topped up by tax credits so they can make ends meet. At the very bottom of the pile are those who are without work, many of them second and third generation unemployed. Deep trouble A crisis that has been four decades in the making will not be solved overnight. It will be difficult to recast the global monetary system to ensure that the next few years see gradual recovery rather than depression. Wall Street and the City will resist all attempts at clipping their wings. There is strong ideological resistance to the policies that make decent wages in a full employment economy feasible: capital controls, allowing strong trade unions, wage subsidies, and protectionism. But this is a fork in the road. History suggests there is no iron law of progress and there have been periods when things have got worse not better. Together, the global imbalances, the manic-depressive behaviour of stock markets, the venality of the financial sector, the growing gulf between rich and poor, the high levels of unemployment, the naked consumerism and the riots are telling us something. This is a system in deep trouble and it is waiting to blow.

ControversialstartforOlhanense in sparkling form to ensure a point for the Algarveans. There has been much criticism of match officials in previous seasons and this game was to be no exception. Sporting publicly castigated the officials and in particular the referee. There vociferous and public attack of Carlos Xistra’s performance was somewhat diluted by their refusal to acknowledge the fact that his decisions benefited both teams at various moments, not just their opponents. There will no doubt be further repercussions as the Portuguese Football Referees Association announced that referee Joao Ferreira had refused to officiate at Sporting’s next match against Beira-Mar. The decision came just hours after Sporting called a news conference to strongly criticise the way officials had acted in the club's Fansmatches.eagerly awaited Olhanense’s first home fixture against V.Setúbal whose 500 supporters joined locals for an impromptu BBQ by the Olhão seafront marina. None of those enjoying the festivities could have imagined the drama that was to unfold later that evening. Olhanense could have been two up in the first fifteen minutes but despite the home side’s dominance it was the visitors who took the lead on sixteen minutes. Ismaily was rightly judged to have pushed João Silva and Neca stepped up to score from the spot. Ten minutes later and João Silva made it 2-0. Olhanense manager Daúto Faquirá wasted no time in replacing Nuno Piloto with the exciting 19 year-old Brazilian Salvador Agra. The balance of the game changed just before half-time when José Pedro was shown a straight red card for an ‘over-the-top’ challenge on Dady. After the re-start Olhanense scored early through Dady. Minutes later the home side missed a penalty but with the next attack grabbed the equaliser. Wilson Eduardo delivered a perfect free-kick and Caué ghosted into the box to head home. Despite hitting the woodwork three times the home side could not take advantage of their numerical superiority and the final score remained 2-2. Local sports news from Chris Wright.

Olhanense warmed-up for the start of the new season by winning the 27th Antonio Concepcion Reboura Trophy game against Ayamonte in Spain. A hat-trick from centre-forward Dady plus goals from Wilson Eduardo, Yontcha & Salvador Agra ensured a comfortable 6-0 victory over the semi-professional team. With fourteen new players in the squad it was always going to be a difficult start to the season as Olhanense travelled north to take on Sporting Lisbon who had spent over 15million euros on new players. The visitors shocked their illustrious hosts when Wilson Eduardo, on loan from Sporting, crashed home a 30metres shot that gave Portugal’s number one goalkeeper, Rui Patricio, no chance. Sporting levelled the score after 77 minutes through Russian international Izmailov. Veteran centre-back Mauricio stood firm at the centre of the Olhanense defence and new Brazilian keeper Fabiano Freitas was

FootbAll turMoIl IN SpAIN The first weekend of the Spanish season was wiped out as players went on strike for the first time in twenty-seven years. Apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid with a combined estimated annual revenue of over 840million euros there stands a league in crisis and a nation of angry professional footballers. Half the clubs in the professional game are in, or on the brink of, administration and around 200 professionals are owed around 50million euros in unpaid wages. There needs to be a fairer distribution of money if clubs are to survive particularly in these difficult economic times. Last season Real Madrid received 136m euros from television money while down in midtable Getafe received 6m. Here in Portugal it is also a case of the big clubs getting stronger, FC Porto has an operating budget of 90 million euros whilst Olhanense have to get by on 1.4 million euros. With most matches shown live on TV gates continue to fall whilst Feirense, newly promoted to the Premier League, attracted a meagre crowd of 731 for their opening game against Nacional. Chris Wright

Benamor Hole 4, Par 4 - 237m

I think the best way to play this hole is to take an iron 4 or 5 and concentrate on hitting the fairway, which will leave you an easy pitch shot, with a chance to make a birdie. Remember keep the ball in play, then you can score well. Good golfing Keith

he 4th hole here at Benamor is a short par 4 and like many other courses short par 4’s are often harder to make par. This hole is no exception. From the tee you can clearly see the green with 2 large bunkers guarding the front of both sides. Any tee shot left, is in danger of going out of bounds. If you miss the fairway to the right, you will be faced with a difficult pitch shot over the large bunker with an out of bounds fence just over the back of the Manygreen.low handicap players will be tempted to try and drive the green but I am quite sure they will make more Bogeys than Birdies.

icture this: a family, dressed in matching denim, lying on top of one another by the ocean. Or think of two parents sweetly kissing their newborn—except the baby is screaming out in terror. Or imagine a mother and father posed casually for a snapshot with their kids . . . with their pet snake wrapped around all of them. These photographic gems—and many, many more— are chronicled in the hilarious, uncomfortable and yes—awkward— book, Awkward Family Photos. Mike Bender and Doug Chernack had no idea what a goldmine they’d struck when they started their website, awkwardfamilyphotos. com, in 2009. They figured they would post some funny pictures from their families and friends’ families, and pass the website around as a joke. Then people started checking out the site by the hundreds, then thousands, then millions—and a phenomenon was born. Lucky for us, Bender and Chernack have created a greatest hits album from their collection of awkward and awesome family photos in Awkward Family Photos. You’ll see some of your favorites from the website, but also dozens of new, ridiculous family snapshots. It’s all here, from holiday cards gone awry to wacky wedding portraits to awful graduation photos and beyond. To make it even funnier, Bender and Chernack have included photo captions, as well as stories from the people in the photos. If you think your family is awkward, you’re probably right, but Awkward Family Photos proves that it could be much, much worse. awesomeness of awkward, Review by Abby Plesser
