PROGRAMMING OVERVIEW

AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR The East and West Austin Studio Tours (EAST and WEST) are annual city‑wide art events that connect artists and the public in creative spaces. This year we have combined them into one event. TEXAS BIENNIAL The Texas Biennial is a geographically‑focused, independent survey of contemporary art in Texas. CREATIVE STANDARD Professional development workshops and resources supporting artists at any stage of their career. BIG MEDIUM GALLERY A dedicated space for innovative and experimental exhibitions. TITO’S PRIZE An annual award of $15,000 and a solo exhibition for one Austin-based artist in the Big Medium Gallery. The Tito’s Prize is funded by a generous gift from Tito’s Handmade Vodka. STUDIOS AT CANOPY Canopy is an arts complex that houses nearly 60 artist studios. Providing studio space for artists is at the heart of what we do.

THE LINE RESIDENCY In partnership with The LINE Austin, this residency is a six week opportunity for artists to experiment and create in a private studio in the heart of Downtown Austin and engage with visitors and locals alike. THIRSTY PLANET ARTIST SERIES In collaboration with Thirsty Planet Brewing Co., one Austin-based artist creates a concept beer, label, and packaging inspired by their artistic practice. SUMMERTIME STUDIO VISITS Intimate adventures into a select few artist studios during the summertime, exclusively for Big Medium’s members. ART SWAP Art Swap gathers artists, collectors, and appreciators to trade art and enjoy a community breakfast on the grounds of the Elisabet Ney Museum. SPONSORED PROJECTS Administrative support for local artists, collectives, and projects that align with our mission.

ABOUT THE AUST IN STUDIO TOUR

A Virtual + Outdoor celebration of Austin artists that introduces the public to new ways of experiencing art, and the creative practices of artists around our city. This is our 18th year of producing a studio tour in Austin, and this year is a strange one, to say the least, but we are excited to present 420 Austin-based artists and collaboratives in a combination of the East and West Austin Studio Tours. The Austin Studio Tour continues our mission of fostering connections between artists all over Austin and presenting the public with a rare opportunity to engage and connect with many of the creatives that help define the culture of our city. With the safety of our artists and audience at the forefront, the Austin Studio Tour presents creative ways to safely experience art through virtual programs and self‑guided visits to public art. The expanded website (AustinStudioTour.org) includes artist profiles, images of artworks, virtual studio visits, demonstrations, artists talks, and a map of outdoor installations and public art.

12

We encourage you to support Austin artists by purchasing art online. Normally, the studio tours are a moment for artists to sell their work and sustain their practice. Although we cannot visit studios and see art in person, please take time during the Austin Studio Tour to engage and help the creative sector thrive.

DATES AND TIMES Free and open to the public, online and outdoors, November 14 - 22, 2020. BOUNDARIES Artists working within the 10 districts of Austin, and up to a 15 mile radius from the Capitol are eligible for this special edition of the tour. LAUNCH PARTY The Austin Studio Tour website will go live on November 13 during the member and artist launch party. This is a preview of the website and an opportunity to acquire artwork before opening to the public on November 14. VIRTUAL GROUP EXHIBITION The perfect place to begin the tour, attendees can view artworks that represent the breadth of Austin Studio Tour participants in this virtual artist showcase.

STUDIO TOUR COMMITTEE Big Medium is supported by a committee of arts leaders that guide the artist selection process, develop strategies for the tour, and involve our community to broaden our engagement. FEATURED ARTWORK BY DAVE MCCLINTON

Thirsty Planet Brewing Co. crafted Brite Tank, an initiative celebrating the creative communities of Austin. We seek out artists, performers, and makers who are becoming ‘Brite—on the cusp of something great—celebrating them as best we can.

Dave McClinton inspired Dark Matters, beer made for discussing ideas, engaging with empathy, and expressing yourself. Brewed with Yirgacheffe coffee, this full-bodied brown ale has strong notes of chocolate, toffee, and a hint of blueberry.
