Caroline Wright Painting | Drawing

2

In the Lilies Acrylic on paper 31” x 41” 2007

Caroline’s work explores the abstract terrain of memory, creating a place that references the real, if not the visible. The painting is an escape from the literal world, inviting the viewer into a long-forgotten, though familiar, silence. Graduating from Brown in 2004, Caroline moved to Paris and worked the burgeoning art collective La Générale. Post-bac certification in Pont-Aven, France gave more structure to her work. Caroline returned to Austin in June, 2006, to pursue painting in her hometown. She spent this past August in residence at the Vermont Studio Center and focuses on bringing a contemplative practice into the process of art-making.

Liliana Wilson

Painting | Drawing

The paintings of Chilean artist Liliana Wilson fill their frames with well-balanced, un-crowded espacios y figuras possessing a clean solidness about them while simultaneously emanating an otherworldly presence. Sus pinturas often depict girls, young men, and androgynous figures in still, trance-like stances, immobile, almost frozen in place. Their gazes are attuned to some inner voice o imagenes inolvidables de la memoria.

Cesar Alexander Sylva

Oil and acrylic on canvas and panel

7

I think a lot about emotional experiences, from the joy of a five-year bender, to the grief at the loss of a loved one and all the great anxieties in between. In my work, I look to the faces and symbols, both personal and universal, that express these thoughts.

Martha League-Calhoun Painting

guest at Cesar Alexander Sylva

Martha League-Calhoun has been involved in the Austin art scene for the last 11 years, working in several local galleries and exhibiting—she now owns her own gallery in the Texas Hill Country. Her style has evolved into her life’s work. The “Wet Paintings” series are large paintings—larger than life scale. They are meant to overwhelm the viewer and make them yearn for that element that cools, heals and soothes. Her satisfaction is emotionally portraying the element itself—the way light plays on and through water and the depth achieved on a 2-dimensional surface.

Barry George |

Barry George Sculpture Studio

Sculpture | Forged & welded steel with found objects

8

As a sculptor I have been working in studios within a half-mile of my present studio on Attayac for the last 20 years. This year I bring back works that I have created for the last 9 months at the Art Students League of New York. I am still inspired by the found object, forging and the human form, but as a New Yorker I have had to scale down (small apt. and no truck!!). Many of the new sculptures are vessels with my birds but also other life forms.

Born and raised in Texas, April currently splits her time between Buda, Texas, and Chitina, Alaska-where she runs Spirit Mountain Artworks, a gallery of fine art and quality craft inspired by Alaskan landscape.

Jennifer Balkan | Dog House Studios Oil painting

I love to paint. I didn’t always paint. I drew. I studied neuroscience in college and got my Ph.D. in sociology focusing on Latin American demography. Feeling a void after all of this, I began to paint and never stopped. Now I am happy. I can’t help it. I’m nostalgic. I like to paint: robots and space oddities from the likes of a Kurt Vonnegut novel, doll bits, circus curios, birdless cages, cageless birds, flowers in my hair, women, stripes, old clocks, well-used luggage, map fragments pieced together, masks, etcetera.

SUPER!ALRIGHT! Video

22

SUPER!ALRIGHT! media has been passionate about mixing film and music from the get go. It was founded by Erik Horn and Gates Bradley, and they were interested in one thing: working with bands. Gates and Erik’s first video for Canoe garnered the attention of fellow music video directors Jason Archer and Paul Beck, who hired Erik and Gates to oversee the live action component of a Black Eyed Peas/Juanes music video for Universal Records. From there, Gates and Erik went on to expand SUPER!ALRIGHT! to represent other directors—Chris Rose, Jose Flores, J.P. Garrigues and Rich Cornelisse. Collectively they have gone on to make music videos for the likes of Single Frame, Shelby, Tacks the Boy Disaster, Roger O’Donnell (former Cure), The Riverboat Gamblers, and recently (and unofficially) for Jarvis Cocker.

Chris Chappell | Painting

Austin Figurative Gallery

Chris Chappell has lived his whole life in Austin, after a brief stint to study art for a few years in Atlanta, Georgia. He lives with his wife, three children, dog, cat and rabbit, and the family continues to grow exponentially, this year alone he has added another cat and a blind dog to make sure his homelife does not stagnate. Chris’ work has evolved over the years, growing from an intense period of painting toilets to imagined landscapes inspired by the boxy and unattractive architecture of the past thirty years. His paintings have shifted from the mazes of apartment complexes and repeating surburban developments to focus on a new frontier: the human figure. As one of the founding members of the Austin Figurative Project, Chris has spent the last year studying the human form and continuing to make and break rules of painting in an effort to capture the essence of life that only the combination of turpentine and paint can achieve.

Jessica Erickson is a new addition to Austin’s art community. She originally hails from Detroit, where she was included among the city’s trailblazers. According to The Detroiter’s Christina Hill, Jessica “combines old-school expressionist painterliness with mature color choices, sophisticated mark-making and creative use of castoff materials.” Jessica received her BFA from the Herberger College of the Arts at Arizona State University. Usually categorized as abstract, most of her work displays a free-spirited, yet controlled approach. Austin Figurative Gallery’s David Ohlerking agrees: “She has a weird amount of discipline considering that she is not 80 years old.”

Matchi, an Austin, Texas, artist, combines the influences of her German upbringing in her hometown of Bogalusa, Louisiana with the colorful Mardi Gras spirit of nearby New Orleans. This paradox coalesced within her to produce a body of work which combined into a mixture of German expressionism with a burst of Warhol-like vividness and color. Matchi received her BFA from the University of Texas in Austin, and also studied at Long Island University in Southampton and the University of Virginia. Her vibrant, color-infused paintings are included in public and private collections around the country.

I like to “make stuff look like stuff.” Growing up in the Oregon desert, I was inspired by animals, and starry skies. I earned my Bachelors at Pacific University, my Masters at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and through these travels of the country and world, developed my motivated and open-minded personality, and confidence in my work. I am currently both a freelance illustrator and fine artist in Austin. My oil paintings and relief prints revolve around portraiture, while my children’s illustrations usually feature animals. The art that I make is conceived and produced from obsession and repetition. Ranging from meditative to hyperactive and grossly indulgent, the resulting forms are emulations and adaptations of the organic shapes found in the natural world. High-key color, found textiles, and the visual language of crafting are utilized as elements of tongue-in-cheek humor to create abstract, corporel forms that are both whimsical and grotesque.

Works on paper

The path to grace of Veronica Ceci has been rife with robotic devilry. Borne of the cold and frozen north, she was raised by a blues musician and a devout parodist. Her faith was lost in youth, leading to a life of artistic excess. After investigating and experimenting with several philosophies, she became a reverent lithographer; a sect of printing whose doctrine describes a great struggle between limestone and nitric acid, and features a lax moral code. She has written: “Give me chastity and humility - but not just now. Ceci will be selling indulgences to all who express need.

Painting | Oil and mixed media on canvas and paper

Seventeen years ago, while a student at the university, I stumbled upon painting. In hindsight I see how every moment and every event in my life, prior to the encounter, paved the way towards my life altering communion with art. I am an artist by nature. Art is my vocation. Art is the embodiment of my interaction with and observation of the world around me. In essence, art is the synthesis of my philosophy, my science, and my spirituality channeled and actualized by means of deliberate yet unpredictable manipulation of material.

I build my paintings in different moments, anxiously enjoying the lingering evaluations. I try to move towards an unknown, a strange uncertain stability, a stability that is dynamic enough to continue a life of its own. During this working period I am thinking about the painting’s unusual requests from me, and its acknowledgement of my requests of it. A spate of recent accomplishments have contributed to my renewed commitment to my post as the Darling of the Used Tire District. Those being, collection by the Dell Childrens’ Medical Center in Austin, a solo exhibit at the newly opened 4WallsFineArt gallery, and a two-person exhibit at the Newport Library Arts Center in Newport, NH (my hometown). Upcoming exhibits include November at the Davis Gallery, and December at Big Medium.

Why is it called Pump Project? There really is a pump, it’s big and industrial, but it’s also sculptural. We think it’s neat. As for the project, the building is a project, running the space is a project, and our artists are always in the midst of some, well… project. Besides a pump and a project, we have studios with over 30 artists working in every medium from oil paint to glass to installation, and a gallery currently showing the Pump Project Members Show. Come see us in the big, yellow warehouse at 7th Street and Shady Lane!

When he is not busy managing Pump Project Art Complex, Josh Green transforms bits of molten glass into whirling vortexes, sparkly spheres, and translucent globes encapsulating suspended curls of color. He continues to perfect his flameworking skills, creating pieces that are both beautiful and complex. Josh began working with glass after receiving his BFA in sculpture in 1996 from the Massachusetts College of Art. After moving to Austin, he co-founded the art space that became Pump Project so he and his fellow artists would have an affordable place to work.

Debra Broz’s mixed media work is about tactility, language and words, obsession, fragmentation, connection, and intuition. She often thinks about the place where the logical and mystical meet. She likes little fragments of text, obsessive mark-making, and the feel of a needle puncturing paper. Over the years she has amassed a large collection of natural objects, and she is sure that they inform her work in some way. When she is not making art she works as a porcelain restorer and as co-editor of Cantanker magazine.

Alicia Hartzell travels the world, capturing images of peaceful, picturesque places with her camera. These photographs become “sketches for her paintings. Her work is infused with the memories and beauty of the places she has been and her desire to engage the heart and find balance. She paints with acrylic, allowing the paint to viscerally find its way onto the canvas. Her tool of choice is the palette knife, its indefinite rendering allows her to pull back from reality just enough to open the mind and the heart to the possibility of is and what could be.

This started my junior year of college after becoming friends with such an incredible group of artists at my university. I had also become uninterested with drawing and painting inanimate objects. Big Medium is an organization that has for the last five years operated under the name of Bolm Studios, and has brought to Austin such celebrated events as the Texas Biennial and the East Austin Studio Tour. In addition to these events, we have produced regular exhibitions in our 950 square foot gallery. With great excitement we are in the final steps of securing our non-profit status, which should mean more opportunities and resources to further our goal of promoting the visual arts in Texas. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for a diverse and growing viewership to engage with and experience the visual arts in Austin, and to give local, national and international artists an intimate space in which they can experiment, and exhibit art in central Texas outside the commercial setting.

Man has long been in conflict with the other living things in this world we share. I am moved by the notion that perhaps nature will stand up to man’s encroachment with a quiet and steady determination. I’ve been fascinated by recent studies on elephants suffering from man’s aggressive behavior and instances of their defensive reactions to this behavior. They remember. In my paintings, trees are the “elephants” of the plant kingdom. Like elephants, they feel emotions and have long memories from their life experiences. I enjoy fantasizing about nature reclaiming areas of land. Roots growing over parking lots. Trees conquering cities. Let’s reconnect with our environment in a positive way. Be outside. Walk to work. Lay in the grass. Ride a bike. Grow a garden. Keep learning. Love the trees. In the words of Jeff Goldbloom, “uuuhh..Nature finds a way.”

Handmade architectural tile

I started Bridge Street Design with the idea of making good design just a little bit three-dimensional—stamping a logo or a bit of text into clay and seeing what happens. Maybe making the tiles will create an interesting new texture, a new visual pattern. Something to please our tactile selves. My interest in creating stamps and surface texture began when I discovered letterpress, and the tiles are really an extension of that. I create the designs in photoshop or illustrator and then have a thick letterpress plate made. This is what I stamp into the clay. I try to find glazes that look weathered and old, that will show off the dimensional pattern of the tile. All the tiles are high-fired stoneware—perfect for a backsplash, an outdoor shower, a retail space; indoors or outdoors. Stop by during E.A.S.T. and receive your very own ceramic business card.

I use charcoal to create drawings which are both literal and ethereal. The drawings contain a series of shifting planes emulating the psyche. The planes are filled with images that are perceived by both the conscious and unconscious mind. These images are woven together with linear patterns. The rhythms generated by the patterns encourage the figures within the work, to hide and reveal themselves as the viewer moves through the piece. The combination of fields and figures, allows the work to remain a constant source of discovery.

Using a camera, I capture or stage an instant in time that depicts a universal moment. I bring myself into that moment when I translate it into a painting - and by painting that moment, I compel the viewer to spend time with it, therefore giving the moment more significance than it might have originally had. I invite the viewer to step into that moment - to linger and spend some time with it, and then, with themselves, their own lives, and their own memories, allowing them to recognize or recall the simple, universal beauty of everyday life, of human existence and of human interaction.

In 2002, Neil Halloran traveled to southern Africa to create a documentary on the AIDS epidemic. After becoming inspired by individuals working tirelessly to fight HIV/AIDS in their communities, Neil changed the film’s message, titling it “5 Heroes of AIDS in Africa.” Since 2005 Neil has been producing “Our Bombs,” a documentary that looks at the ethics of U.S. air strikes. The film explores how detachment from violence affects decision making, and questions the role of American values in the age of “smart bombs” and “collateral damage.” Neil has been living in Austin since 2004. He produces films and runs a web development business.

Glass art

Tree bark in the mists above El Capitan at Yosemite, vivid tropical blooms and vintage surfer life in Hawaii, the sparse landscape of desert and cactus – these images infuse the glass art of Glenda Kronke. Glenda’s strong connection to nature is rooted in her love of hiking, camping and the outdoors. Many of her works are heavily influenced by the patterns and textures she sees in nature. She has worked with glass in its many forms for over 25 yrs and is a partner in East by South East Studios, an art glass community, where they collaborate on architectural installations.

Vazquez Glass Studios | Glass: kilnformed, blown, cast

East by South East Studios

Flo Vazquez explores edges and depth in her work. Educated in the biological sciences, she spent a large part of her life examining life through a microscope, looking deep within to see a world often lost to others. Since initial explorations in kilnforming, Flo has studied with some of the world’s top glass artists, and attended Pilchuck Glass School. Glass is a technically challenging medium which satisfies her scientific thought processes while allowing the exploration of abstracted themes in nature that creatively excite her. Be it a river’s edge, the intricacies seen through a microscope, or the depths of the ocean, her work is about close examination of the wonders that lie just out of our everyday vision. The scale of the work ranges from intimate hand-held delicacies to wall-sized installations, functional to architectural. Flo resides in Austin, TX and maintains her studio in East by South East Studios, which she founded with two other glass artists.

Kilnformed glass

46

I am a proud 5th generation Texan. I began kiln forming in 2003, and as a student at Pilchuck Glass School I pursued the idea of spirit - and gained the technical tools needed to express this quietly powerful theme in glass. My artwork seeks to explore the spirit of self through the use of three-dimensional sculpture. The sculptures are in the shapes of houses, which represents the spirit of the person and exposes a glimpse of the emotions that are being portrayed. I use color, texture, and the reflection of light to define each emotion. I also make architectural glass which include sinks, tables, and lighting.

Rick Tolar has lived and worked most of his life in Texas. Laser engineer by trade, Rick has always shown a deep interest in colors and light. Through the years, he has worked with other photographers and artists whom have helped him train his “eye” for potential unique colorful images. Flowers offer, in a most wonderful way, that uniqueness. “Nature has supplied us with a floral palette of millions of colors and we just need to capture them and make them timeless.” Capturing them is exactly what Rick Tolar is dedicated in doing for the years ahead.

For the greater part of 30 years, preserving life in the photograph has been a true means of creative and political expression. Placing few limits on subject matter, my work ranges from found still life, to architectural to the realm of the living portrait. The incorporation of natural light in my work generally takes precedence, and my real passion lies within the darkroom where I’ve spent hundreds of hours honing a unique style. It is my sincere wish that you enjoy my work, and that these images cause you to pause, study and leave with a new idea or two.

The Painterly Handsomes are Troy Allen, Chris Holloway, Cody Scrogum and Frederick Tabares. Founded in the spring of 2006, the Painterly Handsomes are returning for their 2nd effort at E.A.S.T. Though the four individual artists have differences in their own disciplines, they come together to develop ideas in popular culture, current events, classic portraiture, urban art and postmodern concepts. While they trade these ideas as a group, they have dedicated the past year to visually exploring these stimuli individually and having some serious fun along the way. They hope to include visual collaboration in their future efforts.

Everything I do, say, or create, every place I go, person I see, and event I participate in or witness, all of it translates into my work. Whether I capture something and share it under the guise of art, or it remains only in my memory, it’s still represented in subsequent events in my process and weighs heavily on how I interact with others through the art filter. Since 2001 I’ve been experimenting with a variety of mapping methods, integrating non-standard music notation and projected and fabricated Braille formations alongside automatic transcriptions, and activated drawing contraptions and installations.

Chris Campbell

Chris Campbell’s pottery draws upon the thousands of years of ceramic history to create works that reference the tradition but are clearly contemporary. His work challenges the notion of beauty and asks the user to take time to appreciate the importance of functional objects in our lives. Jaime Jo Fisher is a jeweler working with sterling silver and a variety of found and recycled materials. Jaime’s work has a modern sensibility coupled with a playfulness in the unusual objects she uses in her work. Objects from dryer lint to seeds and broken glass are elevated to unique works of wearable art.

Ian Shults & Dan Morrison | Painting

Gentrification Station

Ian Shults and Dan Morrison take no prisoners in the art world, mostly because it’s a slimy place filled with scofflaws, hoodlums, and hangers-on. Ian Shults’ paintings forge fine art and the profane to tell sordid tales of debauchery with a sly sense of humor. His paintings recall a bygone era when the sheen of the American Dream dulled, and subversive behavior of illicit drugs and kinky benders were swept under the rug. In Dan Morrison’s encaustic paintings, he takes pop imagery and scalds them in a cotton candy coating of wax. His carnival of daydreams is tempered with a worldly experience and a jaded imagination.

My work as a sculptor is an attempt to establish resonance between my human self-consciousness and the cacophony that surrounds. Intense engagement with apt materials is of central importance to my work. Where I discover a harmony between the formal potential in a material and the idea it will substantiate, my inventiveness is most fertile. It is not burdened by the necessity of arriving at certainty or clarity. More stimulating for me is the awareness that something is happening and following it, one small revelation leading to another.

On her good days, the realms of spirit, poetry and science intersect to create a fuller picture of the whole. Although she fully relishes the physicality and color of paint, her current works are tending to include layers of translucent and reflective collage materials, with an increasing focus on art forms such as video that have no physical substance at all, the better to reflect the ephemeral nature of life. Then: steel, paper/rope & glass, performance & installation; now clay, books & shattered glass ideas fascinate. With luck tomorrow’s another chapter of the same story. And all the usual galleries/museums happened along the twisted way. Re: Objects. In this time of re/placement, of re/production, architectural archives encapsulating/insulating concepts, made of a highly durable yet extremely fragile material, containing question-ideas about something as poignant as meaningfulness is succinctly sufficient, possibly even necessary.

Dutch artist Marja Verhaar Spearman is continuing to develop her series “the ties that bind. She talked and dreamt about her passion for years, dabbled all along, worked, raised Ahmad and Jihan, and then focused. Relocating within Austin interrupted her work more than anticipated. This took her by surprise, having been accustomed to changes, while working and studying in Europe, and on the East and West coasts of the U.S. But here she is now, tied up in knots and bound to a series of large sculptures.

Pleasant Valley Ranch Photography | Digital art

Pleasant Valley Ranch is not only a home and studio, but also a work-in-progress. Artists Errek and Wafflemeat have turned the 1946 bungalow into a creative exercise in remodeling as an art form, documenting and tracking their progress with a photo blog. Errek likes to take perfectly nice photos of lovely people and turn them into strange Kool-Aid acid trips of awesomeness, though sometimes he just leaves them perfectly nice. Wafflemeat, on the other hand, generally aims her lens at inanimate objects, blending urban exploration with photography to capture a unique perspective of the every day.

Irony. The unseen catalyst. Mundane items given Iconic status. The ring of fire and Mexican depictions of the Virgin are knocking on the door. There’s a simple wooden chair begging for a portrait. And in the future is a totem pole, the likes of which the world has never seen. There’s sure to be a bicycle in it somewhere. All elements of the work of an artist born and raised in Austin, with a healthy caffeine addiction.

“Aburrida”(boring) Oil on canvas 36” x 36” 2007

The work of Alonso Rey from Peru really stands out compared to the internationalized art fair esthetics; my choice is deliberately anti-cyclical. His oil paintings are figurative, narrative, autobiographic, expressionistic and thus differ from the rather impersonal canon prevalent today. They are literally cutting edge in the illustration of the painter’s psyche without taking recourse to Baconesque distortions but instead employ the direct disgust seen in the Isenheim Altar and the codified metaphors used in Flemish painting. The pure fact that Mexican master painter Arturo Rivera, who won the First Prize in the 2005 Beijing International Art Biennial, took Rey under his wing and Rey’s consequent progress in a very short time speak for his talent. His naturalistic yet slightly surrealist style is highly recognizable. It conveys emotions in a dramatic, exuberant and sometimes humorous way that is more often found in Latin-American art than in US or European art. - curator Till Richter

Neil H. Cronk

Painting: oil and acrylic

I split my time between Austin and Mexico, and am inspired by both locales. I’ve been painting and drawing for about 35 years, and went to Art School at OU in Norman OK. My main theme, although I don’t like to actively think about it as I paint, is what I see as the two major sides of our natures: rational and intuitive, thinking and natural, imposing our ideas on Nature and cooperating with her. I use a slightly surrealistic approach to landscape and interior painting to illuminate this.

Self-amusement is a key ingredient in the recipe known as Charlie Chauvin. Add a touch of mild humor, a few repetitive elements, a paint stroke or two and you have the makings of an illustrator I know you’ll want to see. Pour remaining ingredients into a frosty mug, outline with a thick black line, add some nice teeth, a tie, and some nice shades and what you get is something very deliberate that requires only a heart to enjoy.

My current series of sculptures attempts to create instant artifacts. I take simple shapes, cut them up and reassemble them as a means of replicating millions of years of natural eroding forces. Through this artificial compression of time, I have created works with a false sense of stasis; what seems to be stable and immutable could tumble at any moment. Permanence is an illusion, but regeneration is inevitable.

My central, most long term themes involve fantastical childlike versions of life where everything is alive and practically everyone can fly. In these ungrounded realms of imagination, I feel most free to express myself. Our world seems a little too concrete at times. It’s important to be able to open a window to a much lighter, softer, unbridled version of this reality.

Culturas de ARTe Art Gallery | Oil | Mixed media

Julian Martinez Orosco

Virgin con Rosas Azul Oil and acrylic 30” x 40” 2006

Culturas de ARTe Art Gallery started with the passion of wanting to share my artwork and the Latin culture with an inspirational environment, EAST Austin. As the featured artist and with a “Mixed Media Expressions” style, I work with many materials such as oils, acrylics, charcoal, conte, latex and ink. My paintings are on heavy canvas and other materials measuring in various sizes. In addition, our art gallery features Master Folkart artisans from the Latin Americas and one day we hope to open our gallery to local artists that need a place to exhibit their creations.

Encaustic | Oil paintings

103

My paintings in encaustic and oil are explorations in color and form. I’m very interested in playing with the tension between abstraction and representation. Some of my work is a personal response to all things around me – searching for my own unique visual language. Other paintings deal with images of energy unleashed, such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Whatever the subject, I hope to challenge the viewer to look beyond what is being referenced to the beauty that’s right before their eyes -- the colors and shapes of paint. Visit me in my French Place home studio to see my latest works.

Ines Batllo Visual Arts | Paintings

IBVA

Ines Batllo is a Catalan artist whose works have been shown in Germany, Holland, France, Italy, Spain, Hong Kong, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Texas, where she currently resides. As her paintings and other works bridge the divide between two worlds, the old and new, combining and celebrating the cultures and traditions of Europe and the Americas, so does her work combine various media, both old and new, from charcoal to Photoshop. Her work blends calm and ethereal Iberian mystery with earth hued Pan-American eroticism, yet resonates emotionally with a singular and unique power.

Found object | Assemblage art

You Must Do The Thing You Think You Cannot Do

One of the reasons that I enjoy creating found object/assemblage art is that it allows me to use anything and everything, old or new. My assemblage work stems from what I call “whim of combination.” I use objects that I find in antique shops, thrift stores, and garage sales, or that I find in the street and in people’s curbside junk piles. I enjoy turning what someone else considers disposable into beautiful, interesting, and thought-provoking artwork. Some of my recurring themes are commentaries on relationships, time, money, spirituality, appearances, and the environment. The time to recycle is NOW, not tomorrow.

“A lifelong love of rocks, a gift of a Tibetan bracelet, the suggestion of a silversmith class, and five years later, a world I love to be lost in. Metal is my passion and using it to make a difference in this world of ours by creating jewelry pieces that nurture the spirit is my mission. I carve wax and cast or fabricate in silver and gold to create pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets, and belt buckles, sometimes adding semiprecious stones & gemstones.

Frost Bank Tower at Full Moon Pencil and watercolor 11 x 17 2007

I am fascinated by Water and have a strong connection to its Spirit. Surfing ocean-waves has been the greatest passion of my life. Through my painting I seek to express my connection to Water and communicate what it has taught me in life- to flow and live simply. All of my work comes from the heart. I often use symbols to represent complex ideas. My inspiration comes from journeying in both ordinary and non-ordinary reality. I love to paint landscapes and natural phenomena. I like clean lines and vibrant colors. My style, to me, is very earth-centered, postmodern and urban.

Shawn Camp Painting

The work of Shawn Camp is expressively rendered, but geometrically derived abstraction loosely based on the landscape seen from above or the sky seen from below. In it, he explores the interplay between humanity and nature, structure and chaos, order and disorder.

Roi James Oil painting

guest at Shawn Camp

Chandelier Oil on linen 48” x 36” 2007

The words “Simply Beautiful” are those most often used to describe the work of Roi James. His paintings of transcendent landscapes, mystical figure portraits, and meditative abstracts all acknowledge James to be a painter who is continually exploring and refining his technique. The diversity of his styles and the fluency in which he paints reveal that innate ability often described as a gift, but which is truly the result of a deep conviction and dedication towards his creative expression. His work resides in many prestigious private collections throughout central Texas and the United States.

My first connection to wood was during my childhood. At first, I was living with the woods – experiencing it all around me during playtimes and venturing into it during private moments. Destruction of the forest slowly started and then accelerated to a frenzied pace as business looked at Houston and its ‘no-holdsbarred’ approach to development. When I became of job-age I was already brainwashed to thinking this was the way… Anyway we had to move our hang-out to the beach near Dow. A really huge beach where we parked our cars eight deep and the waves always broke a glowing orange-brown.
