Caroline’s work explores the abstract terrain of memory, creating a place that references the real, if not the visible. The painting is an escape from the literal world, inviting the viewer into a long-forgotten, though familiar, silence. Graduating from Brown in 2004, Caroline moved to Paris and worked the burgeoning art collective La Générale. Post-bac certification in Pont-Aven, France gave more structure to her work. Caroline returned to Austin in June, 2006, to pursue painting in her hometown. She spent this past August in residence at the Vermont Studio Center and focuses on bringing a contemplative practice into the process of art-making.

Martha League-Calhoun has been involved in the Austin art scene for the last 11 years, working in several local galleries and exhibiting—she now owns her own gallery in the Texas Hill Country. Her style has evolved into her life’s work. The “Wet Paintings” series are large paintings—larger than life scale. They are meant to overwhelm the viewer and make them yearn for that element that cools, heals and soothes. Her satisfaction is emotionally portraying the element itself—the way light plays on and through water and the depth achieved on a 2-dimensional surface.

As a sculptor I have been working in studios within a half-mile of my present studio on Attayac for the last 20 years. This year I bring back works that I have created for the last 9 months at the Art Students League of New York. I am still inspired by the found object, forging and the human form, but as a New Yorker I have had to scale down (small apt. and no truck!!). Many of the new sculptures are vessels with my birds but also other life forms.

I love to paint. I didn’t always paint. I drew. I studied neuroscience in college and got my Ph.D. in sociology focusing on Latin American demography. Feeling a void after all of this, I began to paint and never stopped. Now I am happy. I can’t help it. I’m nostalgic. I like to paint: robots and space oddities from the likes of a Kurt Vonnegut novel, doll bits, circus curios, birdless cages, cageless birds, flowers in my hair, women, stripes, old clocks, well-used luggage, map fragments pieced together, masks, etcetera.

Artist Karen Maness has been painting extensively this past year with the Austin Figurative Group. Her new works include a number of pieces focusing on local dance companies. Maness enjoys painting in broad strokes to keep life and movement in her work. Trained in formal academic painting and in large-scale theatrical painting, she is comfortable working in a variety of scales, mediums, and styles. Her works display her love for painting the figure as well as her connection to the landscape of her neighborhood. “Home” and “The Journey” are reccurring themes.

My daughter was diagnosed with a tumor in her belly in 2000. Victoria will be graduating in 2008. Visitors that have seen my paintings say they get chills and goosebumps when they hear the story behind the paintings. Some of my paintings are for sale at Joe’s Bakery on east 7th street. I will share the story of my daughter’s miracle with everyone as a gift to God.

SUPER!ALRIGHT! Video

SUPER!ALRIGHT! media has been passionate about mixing film and music from the get go. It was founded by Erik Horn and Gates Bradley, and they were interested in one thing: working with bands. Gates and Erik’s first video for Canoe garnered the attention of fellow music video directors Jason Archer and Paul Beck, who hired Erik and Gates to oversee the live action component of a Black Eyed Peas/Juanes music video for Universal Records. From there, Gates and Erik went on to expand SUPER!ALRIGHT! to represent other directors—Chris Rose, Jose Flores, J.P. Garrigues and Rich Cornelisse. Collectively they have gone on to make music videos for the likes of Single Frame, Shelby, Tacks the Boy Disaster, Roger O’Donnell (former Cure), The Riverboat Gamblers, and recently (and unofficially) for Jarvis Cocker.

Chris Chappell has lived his whole life in Austin, after a brief stint to study art for a few years in Atlanta, Georgia. He lives with his wife, three children, dog, cat and rabbit, and the family continues to grow exponentially, this year alone he has added another cat and a blind dog to make sure his homelife does not stagnate. Chris’ work has evolved over the years, growing from an intense period of painting toilets to imagined landscapes inspired by the boxy and unattractive architecture of the past thirty years. His paintings have shifted from the mazes of apartment complexes and repeating surburban developments to focus on a new frontier: the human figure. As one of the founding members of the Austin Figurative Project, Chris has spent the last year studying the human form and continuing to make and break rules of painting in an effort to capture the essence of life that only the combination of turpentine and paint can achieve.

Jessica Erickson is a new addition to Austin’s art community. She originally hails from Detroit, where she was included among the city’s trailblazers. According to The Detroiter’s Christina Hill, Jessica “combines old-school expressionist painterliness with mature color choices, sophisticated mark-making and creative use of castoff materials.” Jessica received her BFA from the Herberger College of the Arts at Arizona State University. Usually categorized as abstract, most of her work displays a free-spirited, yet controlled approach. Austin Figurative Gallery’s David Ohlerking agrees: “She has a weird amount of discipline considering that she is not 80 years old.”

Matchi, an Austin, Texas, artist, combines the influences of her German upbringing in her hometown of Bogalusa, Louisiana with the colorful Mardi Gras spirit of nearby New Orleans. This paradox coalesced within her to produce a body of work which combined into a mixture of German expressionism with a burst of Warhol-like vividness and color. Matchi received her BFA from the University of Texas in Austin, and also studied at Long Island University in Southampton and the University of Virginia. Her vibrant, color-infused paintings are included in public and private collections around the country.

I like to “make stuff look like stuff.” Growing up in the Oregon desert, I was inspired by animals, and starry skies. I earned my Bachelors at Pacific University, my Masters at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and through these travels of the country and world, developed my motivated and open-minded personality, and confidence in my work. I am currently both a freelance illustrator and fine artist in Austin.

My oil paintings and relief prints revolve around portraiture, while my children’s illustrations usually feature animals. My work has been shown from New York to Australia, and now in Austin.

José Acosta Sculpture

José Acosta is a figurative artist who uses his classical training to explore modern subject matter. The scales of his sculptures range from figurines to larger than life-size sculptures. Before moving from New York City in 2001, he worked for Jeff Koons as the lead sculptor on a large-scale project and executed a reproduction of Constantin Brancusi’s “A Muse” for the Solomon Guggenheim Museum. His current body of work is drawn from the world of yoga which offers endless possibilities for exploring the human form.

Ryan McKerley has been a full-time studio potter since 1995. He makes contemporary functional stoneware and porcelain vessels, which are fired in a wood or soda kiln. Ryan has taught at the Laguna Gloria Art School in Austin and the Southwest School of Art and Craft in San Antonio. He continues to give workshops in schools across Texas and in his studio.

I build my paintings in different moments, anxiously enjoying the lingering evaluations. I try to move towards an unknown, a strange uncertain stability, a stability that is dynamic enough to continue a life of its own. During this working period I am thinking about the painting’s unusual requests from me, and its acknowledgement of my requests of it.

A spate of recent accomplishments have contributed to my renewed commitment to my post as the Darling of the Used Tire District. Those being, collection by the Dell Childrens’ Medical Center in Austin, a solo exhibit at the newly opened 4WallsFineArt gallery, and a two-person exhibit at the Newport Library Arts Center in Newport, NH (my hometown). When he is not busy managing Pump Project Art Complex, Josh Green transforms bits of molten glass into whirling vortexes, sparkly spheres, and translucent globes encapsulating suspended curls of color. He continues to perfect his flameworking skills, creating pieces that are both beautiful and complex. Josh began working with glass after receiving his BFA in sculpture in 1996 from the Massachusetts College of Art. After moving to Austin, he co-founded the art space that became Pump Project so he and his fellow artists would have an affordable place to work.

Debra Broz’s mixed media work is about tactility, language and words, obsession, fragmentation, connection, and intuition. She often thinks about the place where the logical and mystical meet. She likes little fragments of text, obsessive mark-making, and the feel of a needle puncturing paper. Over the years she has amassed a large collection of natural objects, and she is sure that they inform her work in some way.

J.Haley is a California born Texan from Idaho. Believing that we are all centers of the universe, he fears that this idea will propagate a cult to form. In the seventh grade he entered some wood carvings into the Idaho State Fair, winning honorable mention in the adult class and second place in the youth division. His work is conscious of the perceived world, but doesn’t know what that means. After several years off from artwork while finishing a Social Thought Masters at New York University, Joelle realized that her degree brought no more career options than painting and illustration do. So she moved south, and in 2005 unpacked her art gear at what is now Pump Project. She is inspired by the shapes and patterns around us, from shadows cast by buildings’ angles to curves in wind-bent blades of grass. A recent obsession is old photographs. Many newer works reference black and white pictures from the 1930s and 40s, combined with ideas and colors from newer sources and imaginings.

Lindsey Bailey pushes the traditional boundaries of clay, incorporating mixed media to create installation art. As a teacher of art classes for kids and adults, many of Lindsey’s works are influenced by how children react to the world with an unselfconscious, happy-go-lucky, safe and imaginative wonder. “I try to evoke the same sense of excitement and playfulness that one observes in the way that children interact with new things,” she says. Lindsey is a native Texan who moved back to Austin less than a year ago. She has served on the board of the Visual Arts Alliance of Nashville, Tennessee and her work has been featured on Nashville Public Radio and HGTV.

Man has long been in conflict with the other living things in this world we share. I am moved by the notion that perhaps nature will stand up to man’s encroachment with a quiet and steady determination. I’ve been fascinated by recent studies on elephants suffering from man’s aggressive behavior and instances of their defensive reactions to this behavior. They remember.

In my paintings, trees are the “elephants” of the plant kingdom. Like elephants, they feel emotions and have long memories from their life experiences. I enjoy fantasizing about nature reclaiming areas of land.

Roots growing over parking lots. Trees conquering cities.

Let’s reconnect with our environment in a positive way. Be outside. Walk to work. Lay in the grass. Ride a bike. Grow a garden. Keep learning. Love the trees.

Throughout the book, our hero fights the good fight, armed with bitter wit and a daydreaming mindset, and he hopes to stop the construction of lofts and the influx of yuppies into East Austin that is pushing out long time residents and forever changing the tone of the neighborhoods.

Along the way, he meets a mysterious masked woman who also hails from East Austin. Will sparks fly?

Handmade architectural tile

I started Bridge Street Design with the idea of making good design just a little bit three-dimensional—stamping a logo or a bit of text into clay and seeing what happens. Maybe making the tiles will create an interesting new texture, a new visual pattern. Something to please our tactile selves.

My interest in creating stamps and surface texture began when I discovered letterpress, and the tiles are really an extension of that. I create the designs in photoshop or illustrator and then have a thick letterpress plate made. This is what I stamp into the clay. I try to find glazes that look weathered and old, that will show off the dimensional pattern of the tile. All the tiles are high-fired stoneware—perfect for a backsplash, an outdoor shower, a retail space; indoors or outdoors. Stop by during E.A.S.T. and receive your very own ceramic business card.

I use charcoal to create drawings which are both literal and ethereal. The drawings contain a series of shifting planes emulating the psyche. The planes are filled with images that are perceived by both the conscious and unconscious mind. These images are woven together with linear patterns. The rhythms generated by the patterns encourage the figures within the work, to hide and reveal themselves as the viewer moves through the piece. The combination of fields and figures, allows the work to remain a constant source of discovery.

This series of manhole-cover rubbings was done during three weeks of family touristing in Southern Spain and Paris, France this past winter. With eyes trained on the streets and crayons clutched in pockets, Caitlin uncovered new textures of being in a foreign place. This made her feel better about participating in guided tours.

In 2002, Neil Halloran traveled to southern Africa to create a documentary on the AIDS epidemic. After becoming inspired by individuals working tirelessly to fight HIV/AIDS in their communities, Neil changed the film’s message, titling it “5 Heroes of AIDS in Africa.” Since 2005 Neil has been producing “Our Bombs,” a documentary that looks at the ethics of U.S. air strikes. The film explores how detachment from violence affects decision making, and questions the role of American values in the age of “smart bombs” and “collateral damage.” Neil has been living in Austin since 2004. He produces films and runs a web development business.

Flo Vazquez explores edges and depth in her work. Educated in the biological sciences, she spent a large part of her life examining life through a microscope, looking deep within to see a world often lost to others.

Since initial explorations in kilnforming, Flo has studied with some of the world’s top glass artists, and attended Pilchuck Glass School. Glass is a technically challenging medium which satisfies her scientific thought processes while allowing the exploration of abstracted themes in nature that creatively excite her. Be it a river’s edge, the intricacies seen through a microscope, or the depths of the ocean, her work is about close examination of the wonders that lie just out of our everyday vision. The scale of the work ranges from intimate hand-held delicacies to wall-sized installations, functional to architectural. Flo resides in Austin, TX and maintains her studio in East by South East Studios, which she founded with two other glass artists.

I am a proud 5th generation Texan. I began kiln forming in 2003, and as a student at Pilchuck Glass School I pursued the idea of spirit - and gained the technical tools needed to express this quietly powerful theme in glass.

My artwork seeks to explore the spirit of self through the use of three-dimensional sculpture. The sculptures are in the shapes of houses, which represents the spirit of the person and exposes a glimpse of the emotions that are being portrayed. I use color, texture, and the reflection of light to define each emotion.

I also make architectural glass which include sinks, tables, and lighting.

Work from the “Statesmen” project, along with an interview by Bill Stott, was published in “Camera Arts” (April/May 2005), and in the online magazines “Blir” and “SeeSaw”.

Current work shown during E.A.S.T. includes “Citywork,” street photographs of women in major urban shopping areas in the U.S. and China, and an untitled installation video piece on Tibet. She is a contributor to the Fall 2007 issue of “Esopus.”

Trish Bentley-Allen’s artwork is about Containment, Form, Function. “All words from my background studies in ceramics, these are still components of my work today. Working with paper for eight years, from custom made wedding invitations to handmade paper-sculptures, I feel I have come full circle. I use recycled containers in combination with handmade cards.”

Ian Shults and Dan Morrison take no prisoners in the art world, mostly because it’s a slimy place filled with scofflaws, hoodlums, and hangers-on.

Ian Shults’ paintings forge fine art and the profane to tell sordid tales of debauchery with a sly sense of humor. His paintings recall a bygone era when the sheen of the American Dream dulled, and subversive behavior of illicit drugs and kinky benders were swept under the rug.

In Dan Morrison’s encaustic paintings, he takes pop imagery and scalds them in a cotton candy coating of wax. His carnival of daydreams is tempered with a worldly experience and a jaded imagination.

Jacqueline May is a visual artist who works with layers of ideas in dialogue with one another. Although she fully relishes the physicality and color of paint, her current works are tending to include layers of translucent and reflective collage materials, with an increasing focus on art forms such as video that have no physical substance at all, the better to reflect the ephemeral nature of life. Pleasant Valley Ranch is not only a home and studio, but also a work-in-progress. Artists Errek and Wafflemeat have turned the 1946 bungalow into a creative exercise in remodeling as an art form, documenting and tracking their progress with a photo blog.

Errek likes to take perfectly nice photos of lovely people and turn them into strange Kool-Aid acid trips of awesomeness, though sometimes he just leaves them perfectly nice. Wafflemeat, on the other hand, generally aims her lens at inanimate objects, blending urban exploration with photography to capture a unique perspective of the every day.

“Aburrida”(boring) Oil on canvas 36” x 36” 2007

The work of Alonso Rey from Peru really stands out compared to the internationalized art fair esthetics; my choice is deliberately anti-cyclical. His oil paintings are figurative, narrative, autobiographic, expressionistic and thus differ from the rather impersonal canon prevalent today. They are literally cutting edge in the illustration of the painter’s psyche without taking recourse to Baconesque distortions but instead employ the direct disgust seen in the Isenheim Altar and the codified metaphors used in Flemish painting. The pure fact that Mexican master painter Arturo Rivera, who won the First Prize in the 2005 Beijing International Art Biennial, took Rey under his wing and Rey’s consequent progress in a very short time speak for his talent. His naturalistic yet slightly surrealist style is highly recognizable. It conveys emotions in a dramatic, exuberant and sometimes humorous way that is more often found in Latin-American art than in US or European art. - curator Till Richter

Marshall Alexander is co-owner, lead designer and manager of Life After Art Studio in Austin, Texas. He is currently in the midst of one of his most prolific artistic periods during which he has produced sculptures, furniture and decorative glass.

Alexander, who was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, began painting in his teens. His early work reflected the tropical influences of South Florida and that vibrant, colorful world still informs his work. He moved to Connecticut in the early 1970s and began a successful career as a layout artist and art director. He moved to Vero Beach, Fla., in 1976, where he owned a business designing and installing commercial graphics. He was a consulting partner in The Phillips Group. The company specialized in stained-glass church projects and etchedand carved-glass projects. He also created metal sculptures and neon art.

As owner of The Cutting Edge for 12 years, a major sign and design company in Indian River County, Fla., he produced products that featured corporate identity, award-winning development and business signage, custom furniture and decorative glass projects. He sold the business in 1998 and moved to Austin.

Life After Art Studio specializes in artistic/architectural commissions in a variety of medium with emphasis on decorative glass and cast/fabricated metal sculpture and furniture.

As a filmmaker, his credits include director of “Roosevelt’s Forest Army,” a Civilian Conservation Corps documentary, and assistant producer and post-production consultant on Terrence Malick’s fourth film, “The New World.”

My main theme, although I don’t like to actively think about it as I paint, is what I see as the two major sides of our natures: rational and intuitive, thinking and natural, imposing our ideas on Nature and cooperating with her. I use a slightly surrealistic approach to landscape and interior painting to illuminate this.

My current series of sculptures attempts to create instant artifacts. I take simple shapes, cut them up and reassemble them as a means of replicating millions of years of natural eroding forces. Through this artificial compression of time, I have created works with a false sense of stasis; what seems to be stable and immutable could tumble at any moment. The Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata is an in-home curio collection that’s part natural history museum, part circus sideshow! “Ephemerata” means “fleeting things, like snowflakes or flowers,” so the “impermanent collection” is packed with short-lived curiosities and knickknacks including “an entire wing dedicated to sleep” and a Celebrity Collection starring Marilyn Monroe’s Last Cigarette and Elvis’ Hair. Curators Scott Webel and Jen Hirt also offer tours of the Museum’s fall 2007 thematic exhibition, “Ghosts” – a séance of ectoplasmic objects, mysterious sounds, and tales from beyond! Many of the haunting displays are on loan from the Austin community.

Slugfest is a cooperative printmaking workshop providing equipment and space for printmakers to pursue their artistic vision via intaglio, letterpress, lithography and/or relief printing. You Must Do The Thing You Think You Cannot Do

One of the reasons that I enjoy creating found object/assemblage art is that it allows me to use anything and everything, old or new. My assemblage work stems from what I call “whim of combination.” I use objects that I find in antique shops, thrift stores, and garage sales, or that I find in the street and in people’s curbside junk piles. I enjoy turning what someone else considers disposable into beautiful, interesting, and thought-provoking artwork. Some of my recurring themes are commentaries on relationships, time, money, spirituality, appearances, and the environment. The time to recycle is NOW, not tomorrow.

My first connection to wood was during my childhood. At first, I was living with the woods – experiencing it all around me during playtimes and venturing into it during private moments. Destruction of the forest slowly started and then accelerated to a frenzied pace as business looked at Houston and its ‘no-holdsbarred’ approach to development. When I became of job-age I was already brainwashed to thinking this was the way… Anyway we had to move our hang-out to the beach near Dow. A really huge beach where we parked our cars eight deep and the waves always broke a glowing orange-brown.
