Big Medium is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization based in Austin, Texas. Our mission is to support the arts and artists in Texas. To achieve this, we proudly produce the East Austin Studio Tour, West Austin Studio Tour and the Texas Biennial, as well as exhibiting innovative contemporary gallery programming in the Big Medium Galleries at both Canopy and Bolm, providing affordable studio space for artists, and seeking opportunities with various arts organizations and artists to initiate and support unique and creative projects.

Acrylic on wood, canvas, board My art reflects the complimentary nature of the unseen world. I see the interconnectedness of the spiritual dimension and the material dimension and I try to reflect that in my work. I like to think of my work as bridge to conversation about the known and the unknown. I am inspired by pre-historic symbology that preceded the idea of art, Art as an amplification of function if you will.

Acrylic, pastel, mixed media on paper, canvas, wood Emilio uses multiple techniques: printmaking, image transfer, collage, painting and drawing to create visual opinions of our popular culture – both past and present. Bold, abstract imagery often disguises underlying social criticism. Oil on wood, maps, charcoal on paper Oil painting is a jelly doughnut: the euphoria hits me after I sink my brush into the juiciest bits of saturated color and then start moving the globs of paint around on my canvas. With these globs, I aspire to convey emotion.

Acrylic on canvas, wood I’ve been a working artist for 35 years in Austin and Vermont. I never paint from photos, still life, or models. The concepts for my paintings come from the imagination. I’m interested in colors and how they relate to each other. The challenge of figuring out the composition of a painting is something I really enjoy. The In House Gallery is a professional working studio/gallery (since 1999).

Batik fabric, collage art, design I make Batik fabric collage art. Batik is a wax resist dyeing technique, traditionally used for making designs on fabric. I use this technique to make colorful and vibrant fabric. Using the fabric as my medium I create whimsical collage designs. There are many surprises in batik – crackles and layers of colors emerge in the wax-dye process. These surprises often guide the artistic process for me.

Paint, ink, paper on canvas, wood, paper For me, the process of making art is part intent and part exploration/discovery. Be it visual or with words, my work begins with venturing into the unknown, stumbling into wherever the boundless parts of me – my vulnerability, my imagination – may be, in order to bring some of that out to the surface. Then shaping it in order to better translate my experience to the larger human collective.

Oil on canvas, acrylic, mixed media I’m using collage to create a fragmented reality that has found an uncommon union. I create relationships formed by disarranged pieces of moments in time, and then they are reformed into a fantastic new reality. These collages are then recreated into paint to become a solidified conjunction. The process of painting the collage enables more of an agreement within the repurposed image.

William Geisler Art Big Medium Studios at Bolm Encaustic collage on panel I’m attracted to the abstract nature and subtleties of layering and depth that encaustic brings, as well as to the unpredictability and lack of control you’re often confronted with using the hot wax medium. An idea you may have at the start isn’t ever guaranteed to finish as originally conceived. It’s a constant adventure of discovery and rediscovery and surprise, and that’s what inspires me.

Susan Kemner Reed . featured at Jeff Ragsdale’s studio Big Medium Studios at Bolm Graphite on large paper with cut-out elements Six years ago I began a new series of drawings entitled, A Mother’s Anxiety, based on my experience with a son in the Army in Iraq. The challenge I set was to draw with graphite on large paper in an obsessive way – making as many different kinds of marks as possible. As this series has developed, cutting has become part of the process with each mark or cut a moment of anxiety exposed.

Oil on canvas, works on paper I’ve lately been making paintings and drawings that begin formally as portraits. The phrases that accompany the portraits extend from personal concerns, my day to day, but are kept fairly broad to avoid falling entirely into solipsism or simply keeping a diary. Maintaining that balance creates a sense of uncertainty and doubt that underpins the work, as the elements go through numerous edits and revisions.

Multi media In my work I attempt to bridge the gap between what is considered art and what is considered craft. My work both challenges and embraces the stereotype of creative women as crafters and not artists. For many years I solely made jewelry which I consider functional sculpture. Since moving to Austin I have returned to making larger works blending embroidery, sewing, and knitting, with casting and painting.

Digital photographic prints ASOP maintains that the photographer’s task is to understand the physical properties of light and space, and to sculpt them into a meaningful experience for the viewer. As this medium is governed both by the logic of physics as well as by communicative syntax, a photographer must then necessarily be master of both. Our goal is to nurture this mindset among our students.

Encaustic, mixed media Redox. Through abstraction, I explore the energy flow of life: growth/decay, hope/ despair, work/play, all push-n-pull between then/now/when. I work in encaustic because it unifies the work from beginning to end. Keeping the first marks still visible, but obscuring them with the layers that follow, the wax is as much of the message as the colors, textures and symbols chosen to tell the story.

Ceramics, mixed media The ceramic faces of “Re{as}semblance consciously pay homage to humankind, to the basic elements of what makes us who we are, how unique each one of us is, and the process that gives us life. Each faces has a story of their own. The process of creating these masks has proven to be profoundly similar to how the human journey is created- unique and beautifully unpredictable.

Acrylic, ink, charcoal, watercolor, texture, cream, wood, canvas For me painting is a necessity. It helps to focus my reasoning and perspective. For me painting is a way of life and it comforts me with the promise of confidence.

Encaustic, oil on wood, metal Colvin’s newest work blurs the lines of process, media and viewing. The stories told depict a interpretation of individual moments that take place within our collective memory, whether you are an observer or a creator, making us all somehow participants of the story. The events live in multiple time frames as they transition their own lifespan of creation, experience and subsequently, memory.

Cardboard, paper on wooden armature I build large, figurative props: classical, whimsical or satirical in nature, for the Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans, my home town. Most are made of cardboard and paper mache over a wooden armature: impermanent construction of ephemeral themes. I will have at least one piece under construction to demonstrate the process I use, and perhaps generate interest in organizing an Austin parade scene.

Sgraffito Storytelling. It always comes back to wanting to tell a story of some kind. Or better yet, make a story happen in the head of the person who is looking at my stuff. Stories are among the most graceful and crucial ways that we learn, teach and become close to one another. Medium, composition, size, technique, ethos, light and dark…all of these things are employed in service to the story.

Adrian Whipp Lumiere Tintype Photobooth at Justine’s Brasserie EAST weekends: 11am-6pm At Lumiere, we create hand made tintype portraits from our traveling studio and darkroom. We use only traditional 19th century processes. This is not our beloved modern photography, with its endless stream of disposable photographs. Instead, at the intersection of science and art, we find an alchemy that requires us to slow down and return to the roots of photography.

Painting, drawing, mixed-media “CHAOS IS INHERENT IN ALL COMPOUNDED THINGS, STRIVE ON WITH DILLIGENCE” – this quote is attributed to the Buddha, smart man that he was, and i feel that it touches on lots of facets of the structure which we refer to vaguely as art. I say vaguely because the beast is more than a little multi-headed and means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Strive on by and say Howdy!

Carved wood Wood carvings are the most recent work of art that have caught my interest. I have made custom furniture for over 25 years, but wood carving calls my imagination in a more creative way than working with furniture. These pieces are the result of my interest in the texture, color and quality of woods. These jewelry boxes and key hangers are handmade using fine local woods and long lasting finishes.
