Latinitas Photography Show MezcladaGirl
Saturday, NOV 22 • 12:00 - 5:00 PM A young Latina in Austin is part of the city’s largest youth population. But, she is not monolithic. In a way, she’s indefinable – she’s a Spanish speaker and she’s not, native and foreign born, she likes and doesn’t like guacamole, maduras and California rolls. For EAST, Latinitas presents a visual “punto de vista” using photography and mixed media. The work is generated by hundreds of Latina girls at Latinitas’ after school enrichment programs, which are focused on empowering Hispanic girls and teens using media and technology. The photography sale will benefit Latinitas college scholarship fund for its program leaders.

Scott Rolfe Assemblage
I am an assemblage artist who takes unwanted objects and brings them to life with their own unique personalities, from eccentric animals to dilapidated machines. This year I will be debuting my new series titled The Tricksters, featuring mischievous figures of myth and legend from different cultures in a variety of styles.

Gabe Langholtz is an American abstract painter from Austin, TX. His paintings have appeared in multiple galleries, print publications, television, and film. His work, although primarily representational, is seminal to American color field painting, focusing on color relations, pattern making, form and line with little concern for depth and proportion.

My work begins with a feeling. I hear a phrase, or read something, which evokes an emotion, and a picture appears in my mind of what that feeling means to me. The painting or sculpture I create externalizes the emotion so I can communicate with others.

Michael Garcia Oil, acrylic painting
When I was a young boy, my grandmother crocheted a blanket for me out of dime-store yarn. Its bright colors fascinated me. They felt like a beautiful and magical expression of her love. Now, as an artist, color continues to fascinate and engage me. In Spanish, the only language my grandmother spoke, corazon means heart. It is the beginning place of CorazonArt.com.

My photography is the tool I use to preserve my present for the future. I took my first photography course in 1988 at Bowie High School here in Austin, Texas. Since then, "photographer" has been at the core of my identity. For me, art is a way of documenting fleeting moments in time such as a shy smile or intricate patterns of a blooming flower. Pascal M. Simon • East Austin Mosaic Glass, stone, tile, mosaic
Mosaic as a medium speaks to me, because life is shaped by fractions of everything and everyone involved. The spaces in between are the spaces that either connect us or separate us. I enjoy taking broken glass and making it into a new piece of art, it reminds me again and again, that even if things fall apart, I have the power to make something new, sometimes something even better out of it.

Janie Milstein • Canopy Mixed media
My work is inspired by cityscapes, most recently the urban landscape of my former home in New York City. Using a variety of materials: paint, string, mesh, plastic, wire, wood, paper, and found objects, I explore the shifting interplay of light, shadow, color and reflections. My constructions are architectural, often sculptural, with deep layers and uneven physical contours.

My artistic process is a cathartic one. It's a way for me to cleanse myself of anxiety, let my imagination run wild, play with possibility, renew my spiritual ideals, explore relationships, and gain insight into my own unconscious drives, fears, and impulses. I lose myself in the process; I find myself, again and again, in the product.

My art is an ever-developing autobiography. The complete story of my life is a script to be molded, sculpted, painted, drawn and hammered into. For the past year or so I have been primarily interested in painting landscapes of Central Texas. Either parks where I take my dog, Patches, for runs – Shoal Creek, Barton Creek, for example – or parks and ranches around Austin, but also as far as Big Bend or the Texas coast. I find that these locations provide all the beauty and pictorial challenge I could hope for as a painter.

Humor has always played a significant role in my paintings, where other worldly events and objects occupy places where nature collides with urban and industrial development. My most recent paintings flirt with the contradiction that a painting can be both playful and serious and are partly inspired by the movement and liveliness in the work of Julio Le Parc, a precursor of kinetic and Op art.

The figures in my paintings have the form and characteristics of human beings, but they are not people. Let’s call them “anthropomorphs”, like the figures we once painted on cave walls. Each one is naked, unadorned, fully disclosed, and inward focused. These beings have no individual stories. Each one exists only in the moment, its full potency expressed in a single existential situation.

Liliana Wilson • Liliana Wilson Art Acrylic on panel, canvas, pencil on paper
My images come from the subconscious. Many of the figures I create appear in ‘other-world’ environments. Often my compositions represent single moments in the lives of individuals that serve as metaphors for those lives. Recently my work has shifted to incorporate spiritual aspects of the universe and its surrounding beauty as necessary components of the human experience. 1404 Canterbury St • (512) 431-5658 lilianawilson@earthlink.net • lilianawilson.com

Carlos Lowry guest of Liliana Wilson Art Acrylic on canvas
Two major experiences influence my art: my Latin American upbringing and my work as a muralist. My paintings are figurative and inspired by culture, politics and technology. Musicians, film and networked reality are frequent themes. My process is an unmapped journey that leads to unanticipated places. Although the stories in my paintings are accessible, they do not entirely reveal themselves. 1404 Canterbury St • (512) 797-5405 carlos@nuevoanden.com

Cecilia Colomé guest of Liliana Wilson Art Oil on canvas
My artwork focuses on nature. I paint nature by isolating an object and adding a surreal quality to the image. I tend to work in series based primarily on color. I often use shades of grey, ranging from almost white to black to create an image then applying transparent glazes of color. This color technique allows me to add a surreal atmosphere and create complex and subtle textures on the canvas. 1404 Canterbury St • (512) 431-7470 landscapewithtea@gmail.com

Artist John Cruz holds a BFA from Texas State University and lives and works in Austin, Texas. He looks to find the social commentary and humor in the commonality of his themes. My art is for the most part improvisational. My drawings and paintings are started with little to no planning. Austin School of Photography Digital photographic prints
ASOP maintains that the photographer's task is to understand the physical properties of light and space and to sculpt them into a meaningful experience for the viewer. As this medium is governed equally by the effects of physics as well as by the current state of communicative syntax, a photographer must then necessarily be master of both. Our goal is to nurture this mindset among our students.

I don't do a lot of planning. I get an idea or a feeling, then start with random marks or color and see what develops. Many times the painting that emerges is nothing like the idea I started with. So my work continues to be a journey of letting go of myself and the struggle between control and free flow.I enjoy the process so much, it is often difficult for me to finish a painting.

For more than a year and a half we have been hosting a monthly informal night of storytelling in a backyard on the east side of Austin with the following principles: it's free, anyone can tell a story, and they can tell whatever story they want! Bring a food, or drink or friend (or an edible friend) and get ready to hear some awesome stories. We'll start in on the stories around 8:00ish.
