WEST Committee Big Medium worked with a Review Committee to help select WEST participants. The three-member panel featured Jade Walker, Executive Director of Art Alliance Austin; Oliver Franklin, Director of the Elisabet Ney Museum; and Rebecca Gomez, Curator of Exhibitions and Programs at Mexic-Arte Museum. Guided by Big Medium’s criteria to provide a platform for a diverse group of Austin artists, the WEST Review Committee provided invaluable assistance in selecting this year’s participants.

Thanks to contributions from our community, Big Medium is able to provide a Fellowship Program for artists. Through this growing program, scholarships toward WEST participation fees are awarded to artists based on need and merit. Our goal is to encourage participation from artists of limited financial means, as well as to reward creatives who demonstrate artistic accomplishment. This year, Big Medium provided $5,344 in full or partial financial support to 37 WEST artists.

Donate Big Medium inspires our community by bringing artists and audiences together through unique artistic experiences. We need help from people like you to sustain a healthy, thriving creative community. Together, our work benefits over 100,000 artists and art lovers each year! Donate at bigmedium.org/support.html

Mixed media Art as an organic, creative process is what I strive for. When creating I attempt to produce simple meaningful pieces that stimulate insight into the works of the psyche. This may include ideas regarding current happenings i.e. political climate or more subconscious moments from the past present and future. Kelly Bruemmer – Art By Artwest – Austin Fine Art

Acrylic, mixed media on canvas A free-spirit, and an avant-garde contemporary artist, Kelly Bruemmer uses acrylic and other mixed mediums to create her abstractions. Self-taught, Kelly’s style is modern, bold and bright with geometric influence intermingled with flowing and dramatic tones, swirling layers and contrasting colors. Her creative process is explorative and visceral, and without embellished or complicated overstatements. She just likes to paint. Mary Wendel – Geophyte – ZACH Theatre

Oil on canvas I create art to illustrate an in-between human emotion, a middle area between moving forward and moving from the past. I like my paintings to give me a feeling of calmness with a bit of discomfort. I wrap something around the character’s body or face like a security blanket. Then throw them, vulnerable, somewhere out of place in this world. Temporary Exhibition 1510 Toomey Rd, Topfer Pavillion mary.wendel@gmail.com – marywendel.com Accessibility: 1, 3, 4, 6

Acrylic and mixed media on canvas My work is a collaboration of intuition and exploration. It’s about a relationship with the materials and paint. It involves control and giving up control. When immersed in painting my mind stops and time stands still. For me it’s meditation. Abstract art allows me to be free and gives me permission to express myself instinctively. Larry Akers – Eye Play Studio

Mixed media, repurposed materials Fluid imagery is the unifying theme of my work. Using patterned and reflective repurposed materials, I create sculptures that use moiré effects, pattern variation, and light to generate shifting imagery elaborately animated by the viewer’s movements. I also make threedimensional mandalas and reflected light pieces and do water photography, all emphasizing fluid patterns. Let your eyes play.
