About WEST Big Medium’s West Austin Studio Tour (WEST) is a free, annual, self-guided art event spanning across two weekends in May. WEST provides opportunities for the public to meet the local artists and artisans of Austin in their creative spaces. This year, we celebrate the 7th edition of WEST! This catalog serves as an overview of tour stops and a schedule of events. It is intended to help tour-goers choose their own unique WEST experiences.

WEST Committee Big Medium works with a Review Committee to help select WEST participants. The three-member panel featured Jaime Castillo, Curator, Christina Coleman, Artist, and Teruko Nimura, Artist. Guided by Big Medium's criteria to provide a platform for an inclusive and diverse group of Austin artists, the WEST Review Committee provided invaluable assistance in selecting this year's participants.

Design Theme Ten WEST artists each illustrated an element of a native Texas tree, all of the works were incorporated into the collaged design elements. Our design theme is inspired by a desire to promote the importance of regionality and hope amidst a challenging cultural climate. The goal is to celebrate the diversity of our creative community by creating a dynamic, collaborative design. See the first page of the catalog for the artists and their trees.

ARR. Kelly Grajeda Graphite, charcoal, ink, cloth WEST Weekends, 12-6pm I am drawn to self-portraiture partly in response to my identity as an identical twin. Reflections that are not true reflections represent my personal twin experience. I also appreciate the way light falls on the contours of the body. Graphite and charcoal are sometimes messy and laborious ways to capture this, and are my favorite materials to work with. ARR. Emerson Granillo Archival inkjet paper WEST Weekends, 12-6pm We construct our self-image, the “face” we show the world, but how do we decide what pieces to put where? Are the faces we design inspired by something deep within us, or are they forged by external pressure? I’m interested in the space between who we are, what we show of ourselves, and how our image is perceived by others. At forty-one, I have experienced loss through divorce, a failed business partnership and my home. I have found myself re-exploring film and experimenting with a new medium of acrylic and oil, painting on canvas. This process has shown healing, resilience and hope for the future. 334. Nancy Germond Low fire clay, acrylic, glaze, underglaze, decals I find my inspiration in our animal friends – whether it’s my dog, my cat or that squirrel chattering in the tree. Each of my whimsical, functional sculptures is unique – created by hand using clay and finished with a variety of techniques which reflect each animal’s personality. Twenty new pieces, including a few dogs, cats, bears and a llama, will make their debut at Nancy Hallmark’s WEST studio location.
