The West Austin Studio Tour is a free, self-guided tour that champions the abundance of talent within Austin’s large and wildly diverse creative community. The public is invited to discover new artistic talent, see working studios, learn about artists’ tools, techniques, and inspirations, and support the arts community by building their personal art collections with the work of local artists.
DATES AND TIMES
WEST is divided into four participant categories: Artist Studios, Exhibitions, Happenings, and Select Events. Artist Studios and Exhibitions are free to the public and open on the weekends of May 9-10 & 16-17 from 11am - 6pm. Happenings are also free, occurring on the weekends of the tour with varying hours. Select Events may be ticketed and take place throughout tour weekends as well as the weekdays and weeknights in between.
BOUNDARIES

COLLECTIVE COURTESY
Please keep in mind that many WEST locations are in residential areas. Our neighbors have been very welcoming to tour visitors over the years, and it’s important to respect and reciprocate that hospitality. Please don’t be too loud or cause disturbances; avoid leaving any trash behind; drive and park your cars thoughtfully; and whenever possible, use bikes or public transportation to navigate your way around the tour.
DISCLAIMER
The WEST and EAST catalogs are an evolving physical representation of all Austin artists who participate in the tours and the work they create. Big Medium does not set any content guidelines for artists or exercise any predetermined censorship when producing the catalogs and websites. We ask you to please be aware that the 2015 WEST catalog and website may contain some images with sexual content, nudity, or violence. We understand and appreciate that some individuals may find certain images controversial. We respect those opinions and are always open to community feedback.
WHAT TO SEE WEST is made up of four participant categories, two of which are new to the tour in 2015. For the first time, Select Events and Happenings will incorporate special art-focused events into the tour, offering opportunities for both artists and audience to engage with WEST programming in new and unique ways.
SELECT EVENTS [PG 12] Select Events are projects or events, organized in collaboration with Big Medium. These events highlight partnerships that provide financial and ideological support for both parties involved, as well as a unique experience for the audience.
ARTIST STUDIOS
[PG 20] This is where the creativity begins. For many of these spaces, this is the only time of year that you can get a special glimpse into the inspiration, process, and techniques of the artist. In this category, you can see home studios, spaces in larger studio complexes, or stand-alone commercial studios.
EXHIBITIONS
[PG 104] Exhibitions take place in spaces that are either dedicated to exhibiting art year-round or have created shows specifically for WEST at their location. In this category, you can see galleries, theaters, or museums as well as a few select nonarts-based spaces.
HAPPENINGS [PG 132] Happenings are singular events, contained within a 24-hour period. This category may include special exhibitions, installations, temporary or permanent public art, competitions, art-centered celebrations, educational programming, and art-themed parties. Be sure to check the date and time for each Happening.
FELLOWSHIPS Big Medium awards artists fellowships based on artistic merit and financial limitations. This year, the Big Medium Fellowship Program provided partial or full financial support to cover the participant fees of 23 WEST artists. Just look for this icon throughout the catalog to identify this year’s fellowship recipients.
WEST MOBILE M.WESTAUSTINSTUDIOTOUR.COM
The WEST mobile website is a free online companion to the WEST catalog, offering an on-the-go way for you to experience the tour. The mobile site includes images, statements, descriptions, and location information for all of the artists, studios, exhibitions, and happenings. Use it to search for your favorite spots or scan a list of categories; create a custom list of participants and use navigation tools to find your way from spot to spot while you’re out on the tour.
MEDIUMS For tour-goers looking for a specific type of art, the WEST web and mobile sites are searchable by 18 different mediums:

Olaniyi Akindiya ∙ ARTWITHAKIRASH Multidisciplinary My works focus on moments. Time, present in seconds and minutes, can only be preserved through documentation, as memory is fleeting and easily forgotten or transformed. My work is often marked by an exploration of rural versus urban life, namely the accelerated pace of development and social infrastructure. I produce works which explore the personal and the universal.

Lalena Fisher ∙ LalenaLab Painting, mixed media, textiles, sculpture My work mashes up children’s animation, abstract expressionism, and my grandmother’s quilts. Rigidly stylized characters move atop brush strokes, nostalgic fabric patterns, and tangled stitching—initiating a tension that vibrates between order and disorder. Seams burst seductively with regret, loss, and alternate realities.

Eric Lothspeich ∙ EMLstudio Oil, charcoal I’ve been drawing all my life, but it wasn’t until recently that I have tried to decide what I want my art to mean and be remembered for. Currently, my art is simply a study of beauty in the world around us mixed with ideas of the imagination. I use models, photo-reference, nature and imagination to create works that try to move the viewer and help us discover the beauty in our daily lives.

Marilyn Rea Nasky ∙ Austin Art Space Watercolor, acrylic, collage, oil, mixed medium, prints My goal as a painter is to create visual images that communicate the mystery and transient beauty of our planet. I rely on visual memory, dreams, and feelings for these images of landscape, and natural organic form which are often based in “reality” but are imaginary to the degree that I only seek to capture a feeling about the subject whether it is still life or landscape, and communicate it to the viewer. My work is representational to the degree that it is based on nature.

As I create each piece I build up the layers and colors until each one has its own story. Each piece ranges from 2 x 3” to 48 x 72”, with various sizes in between. I also feature a selection of custom jewelry that match my various collage pieces.

Laura Latimer Painting, collage, mixed media, installation Compositions may begin with an underlying structure that is overlaid with contrasting color and texture or elements of chance – mirroring our attempt to find order in the chaos of experience. I’m captivated by the opposing forces of industrynature, logic-emotion, and light-shadow as they interact and influence one another. Kristie Zamrazil ∙ FullMoon/YellowHouse Studio Oil-based pigments and mediums on canvas, board I paint portraits to depict a person’s inner wisdom. I am inspired by the isolated moment, the look before an emotional turn, a beseeching gaze, and signs of hard won experience. I seek faces that teach us, which is why I sometimes use traditional or suggestive religious iconography. I also use Old Master’s techniques of colored glazes to create a depth of skin tone, warmth and otherworldliness.

A painting, a piece of jewelry, whatever, if it is right I feel it inside me. I choose a stone and try to create a design that is new and different. Each operation has its own joy or frustration. Patricia Strong Oil, acrylic, mixed media When I work, I am reminded that art can represent words, emotions or ideas as well as have a formal, structural reality in its own right. I begin a piece with a line, a shadow or a thought. I don’t really end it. Rather, I abandon a piece. Hopefully I abandon it close to shore. I like the idea of the art being able to finish the journey on its own.

Carol Hayman Photo Intaglio prints These prints are from a series on manikins, in a surreal presentation of artificial bodies in various stages of decomposition. The dents and chips contrast with the usual decorative role of manikins. The images convey feelings that these figures have a history, a life of their own, momentarily paused, but might continue when the viewer turns away.

Barbara Timko guest of Carol Hayman Painting My art emerges in a dark room on a glass table, under lit by soft light. Dreams make powerful pictures of a woman on adventures with her dog companions. The negative space is as alluring as the positive. On translucent cloth, the image is fleshed out with terracotta washes. My goal is to capture attention by a space that becomes a doorway to a meditative state.

Cynthia Pierce Grolleg porcelain All the work from 2000 to the present is from the Austin studio and in Grolleg porcelain. The English clay poses an array of challenges. Throwing the “perfect” bowl is an obsession. The clay is not forgiving, so practice does not always make perfect. Carved stone, wood, cast bronze, terra-cotta, plaster I like working in stone, wood, and bronze. That these media have the potential of a very long life span is a large part of their appeal. While the nature of these materials requires a great deal of physical effort and persistence, the rewards can be great.

Marian Haigh guest of Melissa Grimes Wood fired stoneware, porcelain clay I work with stoneware and porcelain clays high-fired in a wood fired kiln. The flames leap through the firing chamber and leave flashes of color and a sprinkling of ash turning the stoneware clay tan and dark brown while the white porcelain blushes pink and orange. This process requires stoking the kiln with wood for twenty hours. I make one-of-a-kind cups and small sculptures.

Ava Sharifian guest of Nancy Harte Oil on canvas I never know what the final outcome will be and I don’t begin any painting with too much of an idea about what it will become. With the unknown comes some anxiety so I explore that feeling, observing it often and sometimes it transforms into a sense of wonder, a silence beneath all thought, like diving into water during a thunderstorm and feeling the peace and quiet just below the surface

Tom Delaney ∙ Studio Cygnet Fine Photography Palri Pema Od Ling Tibetan Temple Photography Why Studio Cygnet? It’s a reference to that story about the ugly duckling that turns out to be a beautiful swan. The ducks couldn’t recognize the beauty because they were just duck chicks instead of cygnets. The moral of that story is the inspiration for my photography; there is beauty in all things, we just may need to change who we are to be allowed to appreciate it.
