Every year, ECU attracts outstanding students

from North Carolina, the United States, and the world. The reasons they come are as diverse as the students. These scholars all share a desire to learn at a higher level, to become leaders in their fields, and to make their marks on the world.

Tomorrow starts here.

Graduate GRADUATE SCHOOL AT A GLANCE

Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index appearing in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The 2007 index, produced by Academic Analytics, compiled overall institutional rankings for faculty productivity for 375 universities that offer PhD degrees. ECU’s kinesiology, exercise science, and rehabilitation program (bioenergetics), housed in the Department of Kinesiology, ranked fourth in the nation. ECU’s communication sciences and disorders program, housed in the College of Allied Health Sciences, ranked ninth. ECU researchers have developed the SpeechEasy device, which effectively stops stuttering in almost 90 percent of cases. ECU was recently named one of six centers by the National Institutes of Health to study obesity standards for its surgical treatment. In addition to research at ECU, you will find many outlets to fulfill your scholarly, artistic, or other creative needs.

Our People. With a faculty that has grown by more than 500

full-time professors in the past six years, ECU is attracting a wide variety of scholars to work in our 13 colleges and schools. Some of the world’s most recognized scientists, artists, and other intellectual leaders come together in our academic community to provide exciting and unique educational experiences for our graduate students. At ECU, you can expect knowledgeable professors and supportive staff, as well as lifelong friendships and intellectual partnerships that will be among the most lasting benefits of an ECU graduate education.

Our Programs. ECU offers 76 master’s and 62 graduate certificate programs. We offer 16 doctoral (PhD, EdD) and four first-professional degrees (AuD, DMD, DPT, MD). We hold the distinction of being classified among the Doctoral/Research Universities by the Carnegie Foundation. The College of Nursing and the library science program were ranked among the top 10 largest distance-education programs by U.S. News & World Report. An increasing array of interdisciplinary activities are broadening and deepening our intellectual scope. In addition, ECU graduates more teachers and certain allied-health professionals in North Carolina than any other university. Graduates in nursing and accounting pass their licensure exams at rates that exceed national averages.

At ECU, the student is the focal point of our programs. Whether in the laboratory, artist’s studio, health clinic, or conducting scholarly activities in any of our numerous venues, student success is a prime motivator of faculty and staff. Our Setting. Learning at ECU means enjoying a lovely and tranquil campus in a region that offers exceptional recreational and other quality of life features. Greenville, a city of about 81,000 people, is located in eastern North Carolina, 85 miles east of Raleigh. It is within easy driving distance of coastal resorts and recreational opportunities available on the Outer Banks and Pamlico Sound. A rich and growing arts community also adds to the quality of the learning experience at ECU. The College of Fine Arts and Communication produces more than 250 performances and exhibits each year, turning the stage into a regular classroom.

Our Discovery.* Today, ECU captures about $48 million per year in contract and grant activity, and the rate of growth of this enterprise is accelerating. Significant increases in awards occurred in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (88 percent) and the College of Education (24 percent). A major component of the arts and sciences college’s increase was a $900,000 award from the NSF for a new particle accelerator in the Department of Physics. The College of Health and Human Performance has been awarded a research grant from the US Department of Education, and the College of Allied Health Sciences alone has seen a 53-percent rise in grant submissions. Many programs have new state-of-the-art buildings and facilities. Two of ECU’s PhD programs have earned top-10 rankings in a national

So, is ECU right for you? Only you can know for sure. But by coming to ECU, you will be joining more than 6,000 other campus-based and online graduate students who have recognized the numerous ways in which ECU enriches their lives. * Discovery means research, scholarship, artistry, and other forms of creativity. 31
