Creating Outstanding Futures

Introduction At East Durham College, we offer a range of alternative provision for pupils who are aged 14 to 16 years old in Year 10 and 11. We offer a number of different programmes, designed to give pupils the opportunity to re-engage with education and to help them improve their future career prospects. Please read on for more information about our provision, including the Engage 14-16 Programme, Elective Home Education and the Transitional Development Service.

Engage 14-16 Programme (Full-Time Provision) What is it?

Subjects offered

Length of programme

The Engage 14-16 Programme at East Durham College is a unique offering. Engage 14-16 provides an alternative learning setting for young people.

Engage 14-16 offers all the compulsory subjects required at Key Stage 4, including maths, English and combined science GCSEs. In addition, pupils can select two of the vocational options listed below which are taught within East Durham College’s Peterlee campus, Houghall campus, in Durham, or The Technical Academy on Peterlee Business Park.

One to two years depending on starting year.

Engage 14-16 seeks to enthuse and motivate young people by offering a vocational-based curriculum together with maths, English and science – all offered as a ‘fresh start’ in a different setting. Positive behaviour and effort are rewarded and promoted throughout the provision, which is central to helping re-engage these young people. Pupils are given clear boundaries to work within and negative behaviour is addressed appropriately and consistently.

Who is it for?

Attendance requirements

Pupils moving into Year 10 and Year 11 who are at risk of permanent exclusion from their current school or who would benefit from a vocational-based curriculum.

Attendance at Engage 14-16 is full time, five days per week.

How to apply and contact information Your school will talk to you about the potential benefits of moving to Engage 14-16. An application form is then completed by your school and sent to the College. Following this, you may be invited in for an informal interview with the Head of Engage and one of the teaching staff. During this interview, the provision will be discussed and you can ask any questions you may have as well as have a tour the campus. If it is felt that Engage 14-16 may be of benefit, then pupils and their parents/carer will be invited to one of our Open Evenings so you can find out more details and see the facilities.

Transitional Development Service (14-16 Part-Time) What is it? The Transitional Development Service (TDS) is designed to re-engage pupils who are at risk of disengagement from mainstream education. The TDS is not a provision in itself – it instead places pupils into existing mainstream vocational programmes at the College taught at the Peterlee campus, the Houghall campus or The Technical Academy. The service is dictated by individual needs and interests, as we believe a young person’s best chance of success is being able to choose their own path. The TDS allows pupils to infill into mainstream vocational course of their choice. Pre-16 pupils on accredited courses attend (where possible) maths and English (level decided after initial diagnostic assessments).

basis. Current charges are £200 per week for accredited courses up to our equivalent of three days per week (including maths and English where appropriate). Part-time provision for experience only is £40 per half day or £70 for the full day (non-accredited). Schools/agencies/parents are expected to pay for essential equipment/clothing. Free transport is provided (where appropriate). Costs for school meals can be added to monthly invoices. Who is it for? Pupils who are currently in Year 10 or Year 11 attached to a school. Subjects offered Pupils can infill into most vocational options within the College, along with maths and English.

Attendance requirements TDS pupils usually attend over three to four days, depending on the vocational area of choice. Length of programme This is individual to each pupil depending on their starting point; could be up to two academic years. TDS can take referrals throughout the year, however if pupils wish to complete a full vocational qualification it is beneficial to attend for the full academic year. How to apply and contact information Referral can be made directly to the TDS team from the school/agency who are to pay for the provision.

All TDS pupils remain on their relevant school or agency roll and schools/ agencies are invoiced on a monthly

To access the home education programme, pupils must be equivalent in age to pupils in Year 10 and Year 11 (14 to 16 years old). The pupil must also be deregistered from school.
