NEW HOME FOR MAN CLUB!
ANDYSMANCLUB has a new home, on a Monday evening 7pm - 9pm for the men’s mental health charity. Group members are provided with tea, coffee, biscuits etc in a warm environment and are now meeting at Horden Social Welfare Centre.
In mid-2016, nine men met in a small room in the typical Yorkshire town of Halifax with a simple aim of talking through their issues and helping each other deal with their mental health. All in attendance were agreed there was a magic in that room that had to be shared. This was the start of a movement that has grown faster than anyone first involved could have ever imagined. Fast forward almost 6 years and ANDYSMANCLUB now has groups at over 110 locations across England, Scotland and Wales.
ANDYSMANCLUB takes its name from Andrew Roberts, a man who sadly took his own life aged 23 in early 2016. Andy’s family had no inkling that he was suffering or struggling to the extent that he would do this, and as a result looked deeper into male suicide and men’s mental health. They soon discovered that male suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, with Male Mental Health surrounded by well-ingrained cultural stigma in the UK.
Andy’s Mum and Brother-in-Law, together they came up with the idea of ANDYSMANCLUB, a group where men aged 18 and above can speak openly about their mental health in a judgmentfree, non-clinical environment. Groups now operate nationwide and are completely volunteerled, with the vast majority of group facilitators having first interacted with ANDYSMANCLUB when they came through the door as a service user.
At their first session in their new venue ANDYSMANCLUB had just shy of 20 people attend. They also have over 1,000 followers on social media who regularly celebrate and share this incredible work.
To attend ANDYSMANCLUB, drop us an email info@andysmanclub.co.uk or head to www.andysmanclub.co.uk, find your nearest club, and simply attend!
YOUR LOCAL MP GRAHAME MORRIS
In a normal week, my time is spilt between Westminster and the Easington constituency.
During the week when Parliament is sitting, represent and raise local issues and concerns in the House of Commons. In recent weeks, have asked questions and spoken in debates on crime and anti-social behaviour, local investment, the NHS and North East Ambulance Service, and housing regeneration specifically raising Horden.
The issues and questions I raise in Parliament are led by the meetings and correspondence I receive from constituents. In the months ahead am seeking debates about local bus services, the cost of living and regional investment.
People can contact me with the easiest route being by telephone or email.

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERING
Back in 2017 when Horden Hub House was established Jimmy began volunteering to support others in his community. Since then and more recently since the Hub House reopened in January this year following the pandemic, Jimmy has put his heart and soul into making a difference within Horden and beyond.
VOLUNTEERING IN HORDEN
Volunteers are absolutely vital to the services supporting communities locally in all of the work that they do.
Volunteers come from a whole variety of backgrounds but all share the goal of giving time and skills to the communities they live and love. Volunteers are provided with full training, support and expenses.
There are plenty of roles to suit you and the time that you may have to spare, like:
Food Crisis Volunteers, drivers, befriending telephone volunteers, pathfinders, debt advisors, budgeting coaches and event support volunteers.
For an chat about volunteering or to find out more call Colin - 0191 569 3511
Jimmy and his wife, Clare also runs a support group called ‘oops’ in the youth and community centre. Beyond this Jimmy helps out with several other community groups and never wants anything in return.
He enjoys and excels when helping others. He goes out of his way to make everyone who attends the Hub House and other groups he is involved in extremely welcome. He is passionate and enthusiastic, professional and responsive.
Jimmy always aims to Improve the health and wellbeing of residents, giving them information on services that could benefit them and their loved
ones, providing a friendly face and a listening ear, making a huge difference to local vulnerable people.
Jimmy wanted to help digitally excluded people get online and planned and delivered his own 6 week IT support course supplying refreshments and lunches and his smiley personality which received great feedback.
Jimmy always goes above and beyond, always thinking of new ways of working and ways to improve services and work in partnership to benefit the community where he lives and where his heart lies.
It is fantastic for Jimmy to receive the recognition he deserves for his outstanding contribution within Horden. Jimmy also supports the work of other community groups within Horden including Durham Deafened Support, Ooops Group and has most recently became a trustee at Horden Youth and Community Centre. Jimmy is so passionate about Horden where he lives with his wife and son.

TOY APPEAL - HOPE FOR FAMILIES FACING SURGING COST CRISIS AT CHRISTMAS
The Salvation Army is calling on Horden’s community to donate new toys to its Christmas Present Appeal that will support families in need over the festive season.
Every year, we meet hundreds of distressed parents facing the prospect of their children having nothing to open on Christmas Day. We are concerned that the cost of living crisis will mean even more families struggling to pay for the very basics over Christmas.
Horden Salvation Army’s Community Mission Facilitator Angela Denton said: “Every year we ask people to donate new toys and gifts to our Christmas Present Appeal so we can distribute them to families whose children would otherwise not receive a gift. This year, we are expecting the number of families requesting help to rise as a result of the cost of living crisis.
“Please support our Christmas Present Appeal to help our drive to ensure vulnerable children in Horden and East Durham will have something to open on Christmas Day.
“Last year, we supported around 500 children in the East Durham area with toys and already we’ve started receiving requests for support ahead of Christmas. We are looking for donations of new unwrapped toys and food items such as chocolate, selection boxes, sweets and biscuits.”
People wishing to donate can drop their kind contribution at Horden Salvation Army in Dene Street on Thursdays and Fridays between 10am and 12pm or phone 0191 586 3208 to arrange drop off until Friday 9 December, or donate online or via the Amazon wishlist. Visit www.salvationarmy.org.uk/horden
Donations will also be taken at a toy service held on Sunday 27 November.
Donations also accepted:

Coalfields Regeneration Trust is building prosperity and opportunity in places like Horden.
As part of local activities, CRT have funded a number of organisations within the Horden area, including: Roseby Road, Horden Centennial Centre, HYCC, Horden Football Club and Creative Youth Opportunities.
A representative of Roseby Road had this to say about the impact the funding will have, “The funding will really help the group out as the numbers tend to drop off, I’m hopeful this money will help them have their free meal during these harder times.”
CRT can provide practical support to groups and projects! Specifically ones that help benefit residents in Horden and beyond. Through trusted partnership work with organisations such as WEA Training and Homegroup, CRT has helped provide courses and structured information sessions in their designated ‘Hub House’ and other community venue. These key events have provided a space for groups to promote and encourage the services available in Horden. The Centennial Centre in Horden responded to the support by saying, “CRT has helped our network grow and as a result of their support, we have had many more opportunities to work in partnership with other charities and community organisations. This has enabled us to reach and support more individuals within our community, reducing social isolation and loneliness, making a difference to the lives of those living in our communities.”
CRT also coordinated a successful Easter and summer programme funded by AAP that benefitted hundreds of children and other local organisations. This work is scheduled to continue as they have planned Christmas parties coming up at The Ark and Roseby Road Wellbeing Centre.

STAYING WARM THIS WINTER!
Horden and Peterlee have got involved with the national Warm Spaces campaign. Warm Spaces are places in the community where people can gather for free in a warm, safe, welcoming place and some company. Some venues may also offer hot drinks, activities and other services such as free wi-fi. Warm Spaces will be heated, safe, friendly, neutral places where you can comfortably spend time reading, studying or chatting with others.
You can find details of warm spaces on the activity and grub listings on page 7.

Michelle from Creative Youth started work supporting the Miners Community Picnic 2019 and saw that without transport that they would struggle to get the young people there, little did Michelle know that an over seas saviour would step in to save the day and get the young people to the event. people to speak up about crime by: promoting our unique service to give information about crime 100% anonymously; raising awareness of what constitutes a crime and breaking down the barriers to reporting crime.
We do this through our Fearless workers who are placed nationally. As of May this year, the Fearless worker for County Durham is Lucy who has been developing and presenting workshops on different types of crimes at schools and youth clubs (as well as spreading the Fearless message).
The Youth and Community team have worked with the parish council to secure PCC funding. Michelle the Creative Youth and Community Centre Manager said “We know there are a lot of young people who need help and support out there, that are not coming into the centre. We know that there are lots of complex issues that the young people face here and we know that just opening our centre and hoping they connect isn’t enough”. Working with the Parish Team, the CYCC team knew that they needed to find funding for them to get out and meet the young people outside of their building.

This summer the area was a hive of activity as Ken Loach and the film crew set up at the Glebe Community Centre. Just like most community centres locally, the filming took place alongside a massive timetable of slimming groups, mum and toddler classes, yoga and sports activities.
I put a call out locally and on Facebook asking if anybody could help with either a donation to support the mini bus or anyone with a bus to help. was overwhelmed when my sister Natalie said that she would pay for the bus. The film Director, Ken Loach has recently returned to the northeast and you may have seen them in the area shooting the new film ‘The Old Oak’. YOUTH GROUP IN HORDEN!
Youth Group has been running in Horden since 2014 in the community centre but since moved to the welfare house in the park in Horden the creative youth group runs Monday 5 - 6.30pm and Wednesday 4.30 - 6pm & 6 7.30pm for our young volunteers. The group has many more opportunities for young people and this year have already exhibited their own artwork in the national gallery for contemporary art (still on display), the first every arts festival in Horden commissioning 6 artists to lead art and run the event back in April.
Any young person can come along but will need to have a consent form from an parent or guardian - is open to young people from 5 to 19. We at Horden Together will be following in every edition and fingers crossed for the Children in Need funding.
Horden Creative Youth have successfully pitched to the NE Youth fund. Some of the young volunteers at the Youth and Community Centre, pitched to a dragons den panel, for a project to secure £800 funding for the group.
Back in October a small group of youth volunteers went to The Meadowfield Leisure centre in Durham after working on a presentation to pitch to a panel of 12 dragons made up of lots of very important people from the North East. The idea they pitched was to do a Christmas event in the park in hope of bringing the community together, with activities and
These few volunteers represented the whole group as not everyone could go due to the size of the transport. The young people decided to play a trick on the rest of group and tell the rest they were unsuccessful, they couldn’t keep the good news back for long and the whole group celebrated and cheered upon after eventually getting the news that they were actually successful - Well done!!
Join them on 4th December, for all of the festive fun - The group will be making decorations and little crafts to sell as they already have big ideas for an Easter event.

HORDEN HUB HOUSE
Horden Hub House based at the end of Seventh Street is known locally as the place to go for help. Working with key partners the Hub House is a welcoming space to offer advice and signposting to the community.
The Hub House also provides a space for key support agencies to work from - offering many great services including one on one support, group support and quality advice
Horden Together work to resolve a number of issues locally which are reported by you. These includewaste issues, licensing, dangerous buildings, nuisance properties, drainage issues, empty properties, pets control and support with illegal evictions. We caught up with local resident and team member Keith to find out a little more about how they support the community.
Reports can come in a number of ways, usually via the County Durham portal. We do some of the reporting ourselves when we walk round all of the local areas. We are a specialist team for Horden and any jobs that get put in for Horden, will get directed to our team here. We encourage residents to report issues they see via the portal online or pop in to the welfare centre and report issues.
The sort of issues we deal with on a regular basis are open access properties with missing windows
or doors, drainage issues which we sort to prevent rodents and other pests. The worst part of the job for me is plunging peoples drains, sometimes you can end up covered in all sorts as you can imagine and the saddest part of our job is seeing all the open and vacant properties.
We are different to the neighbourhood warden team who deal with fly tipping, some ASBO, community meetings and dog fouling. Both our team and the warden team work five days a week Monday to Friday to make Horden a better place for the whole community.
If you need support with your home or your landlord - report it via the Durham Portal.
TECHNO TRAINING
A group of people in Horden are set for a brighter future thanks to help they’ve had at the Horden Hub House. Six people came along to “Jimmy’s IT devices” workshopswhich is one of the many services run out of the Horden Hub House on Seventh Street.
The Horden Hub House is operated by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust which is committed to building prosperity and opportunity in towns like Horden.
The Hub House allows local people to access help to get them back to work, learn new skills, reduce loneliness, improve their health, make their money go further as well as many other issues to help them get a better life.
POLICING IN HORDEN
The Neighbourhood Policing Team in Horden would like to wish the community and our ever-increasing numbers of Horden partners a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
We are aware of several issues that remain in Horden, including a rise in burglaries to vacant properties and off-road bike issues. We are tackling burglaries by carrying out proactive investigations and robustly targeting offenders. As a result, 33% of reported Burglaries in Horden, have been detected year to date, which is amongst the highest detection rates in the country!
We will continue to support you, target criminals, and reduce antisocial behaviour to make a real difference in the area.
To this end, in the last six months we have seen new Neighbourhood officers placed in Horden, on top of the support from our 24/7 policing team, safeguarding and CID colleagues - we feel we are well placed and look forward to building on a positive end to the year.
One of those on the workshops said “I’m so grateful to Jimmy and the Horden Hub House for the support they’ve given me. Thanks to the IT devices workshop I’m a lot more confident using email, shopping online, banking online and accessing/sharing photos.”
Paula Snowdon from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust runs the Horden Hub House and said “It’s been a real pleasure to watch the group make progress and their see their confidence using their own devices improving over the last six weeks. Working on their own devices means they can continue

HORDEN COMMUNITY WELFARE FOOTBALL CLUB
You may have noticed that there is some major work taking place at the football club. We caught up with Chris Cain, Chairman of the Football Club to find out exactly what is going on.
“About a year ago Horden Recreation Ground Trustees had a steel survey and within that found out that the steel was degrading so we needed to seek out new options for the club stand. The architect suggested removing all of the seating from the 1st floor and for us to put a new roof on it. Thanks to a number of donations and with the help of the football foundation a new 100 seater seating area is being built, with disabled access.
The original stand was built in the late 1920s, and like most stands and football clubs we have had to transfer to becoming a seated ground. Our stands original seats had already received a second life with lots of seating donated to us, thanks to the wider football community. Now those seats have been donated to community members in the rebuild giving a third home to the seats, having come from the stadium of light.
The work started a little late this year than we had originally planned, but it is expected that the new stand will open in January 2023. We are looking to celebrate the opening of the new stand in the new year.”
Matches and activities are still taking place until the work is complete and you can find out more info and updates on the club Facebook page.
The group play competitive football matches on a Saturday afternoon 3pm - 5pm for men’s (home fixtures) and on a Sunday afternoon 2pm - 4pm for ladies team (home fixtures). The team occasionally meet mid-week for the men’s team (7.30pm 9.30pm).
During our home fixtures, we do have the building complex open for the supporters, officials and players associated with the teams. We also provide hot food & refreshments (via Marra’s Munch Box) during these time. So the building is open during those times and has electric fan heaters to warm the building.
Horden Football Club obtained funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust recently to deliver a project within our community that will be Tackling Food Poverty & working with vulnerable children & families at risk of not having a “free hot meal”, in association with The Village Cafe.
The football club is run purely by volunteers and like everything else resources / commitment is totally reliant on the goodwill of those involved.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this edition and to life in Horden.

ARTS CAFÉ @ COMMUNITY HOUSE
In the past couple of months we have seen new exhibitions and workshops take place in the Arts Café. Most recently, the Auxiliary Project Space and communities from across East Durham collaborated on a series of campfires, workshops and events – the artwork from these culminated in our current exhibition - Untold Stories from Little Voices with Wild Ideas.
We were so happy to open our doors to young people and their families from across East Durham, who took part in the From Campfire to Hearth workshops to launch this exhibition – we had a meal, enjoyed a campfire and apple bobbing, watched the films, enjoyed the clay sculptures and listened to the new audio compositions. This exhibition is open until 15 December 2022, weekdays, 9am – 4pm.
Local artist Chris Suttie has been running some clay and plaster tile making workshops on Thursday evenings, the tiles made in this workshop will form part of an exhibition in the New Year.
See Facebook page and Instagram for information about this exhibition: facebook.com/eastdurhamcreates | instagram.com/edcreates/
In 2023 we will be hosting lots more exhibitions, workshops and events in the Arts Café. If you’d like to stay up to date with our programme, email stayintouch@eastdurhamcreates.co.uk
