EEFF 2016 boasts a line up that’s very difficult to sum up in a brief introduction. From the 10 days of free screenings in our Roots programme; to a ‘Collapse of Civilisation’ weekend in a Masonic Temple; to a sunrise photographic walking tour; a macabre masked ball; a celebration of 40 years of punk; a Norman McLaren Psych night; and a vast selection of films looking at the human impact of global politics, it’s a phenomenal, varied line up.

Thursday 23rd June 2016 – a day that could change the political terra firma of these small islands, forever. The day the people of Britain decide whether to remain a part of the European Union, or go their separate ways, and the day the East End Film Festival flings open its doors and embarks upon an intense eleven-day frenzy of cinema.
So whether you want to escape from, or engage with, the tumultuous world climate, we have an event for you. With 36 British feature titles, and 50 titles from nations beyond these shores, it’s fair to say we’re an international celebration of all things film. After closing with the cinematic take on the iconic British genius that is Gary Numan: Android in La La Land, all that’s left for us to say is: “Vive l’EEC!” (East End Community)
So while we’re all still friends, it seems appropriate to welcome a very talented Frenchman, Ian Bonhote, who chose over 17 years ago to make London his home, to open this special edition of the festival. His film Alleycats is a cinematically agile, breakneck dash through the streets of London (and East London), and as a festival focused on the most exciting first and second time directors, it’s an honour to be hosting its World Premiere. Another VIP from across the channel is our Director-in-Residence, Tolga Karacelik, who joins us to captain a selection of contemporary Turkish filmmaking voices after his brilliantly claustrophobic second feature Ivy, about a bankrupt cargo ship, won our top award in 2015.
We hope you’ll stay with us.

AWARDS The East End Film Festival exists to champion the most relevant, challenging and distinctive new films from first and second time directors from around the globe. The EEFF’s Competition Selection is a vital part of the platform that the festival offers to filmmakers, as well as an opportunity for us all to celebrate the best and bravest new cinema. EEFF’s Best Feature prize is raeserved for first and second time directors, with previous winners hailing from Russia, India, Romania, Argentina and Mexico. Other prizes celebrate the punchiest new nonfiction films, the most outstanding British short, the various crafts inherent in making great movies, and the chance for audiences to select their own favourite work screened at this year’s festival. A selection of films to be celebrated, this year’s Competition Selection heralds the great films of the year, and the great filmmakers of the years to come.
BEST FEATURE EEFF 2016
Discovering the most distinctive new directors in world cinema, the festival champions the filmmakers making great work now, and who will be creating important cinema for decades to come. We are delighted to be presenting our Best Film Award in 2016. In 2015 Tolga Karaçelik received the festival’s main prize for his second feature Ivy, and Tolga returns to the EEFF this year as Director-in-Residence, heading up the festival jury and co-curating a selection of films from important new Turkish directors.
SHORT FILM AUDIENCE AWARD
Festivals may have programmers, juries and directors, but it’s the audience who really matter. Let us know your opinion after any of our shorts screenings and cast your vote for this year’s Short Film Audience Award winner.
RISING STAR AWARD
Supported by the Matthew Martino Benevolent Fund, the Rising Star Award was introduced in 2015 to support the best in new young filmmaking talent. This year’s award was presented to Just Another Saturday, directed by Phoenix Heights, at the last edition of Cutting East in 2016.
ACCESSION AWARD
Created in 2014, the Accession Award exists to champion a particularly vital craft within filmmaking, as well as the recipient’s establishment of a career within their chosen field. Focusing on a different discipline each year, the EEFF 2014 Accession Award celebrated the art of cinematography, with 2015 championing the sonic power of the soundtrack. In 2016, we turn our attention to the subtle, all encompassing craft of screenwriting.
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Celebrating the most unique, human and arresting non-fiction film in this year’s EEFF programme, the East End Film Festival’s Best Documentary Feature Award champions stark reality portrayed on film, and a filmmaker in whose hands bare facts become something profound and cinematic. From the streets of Baghdad to secret inner worlds, this is a ‘beautiful and thought provoking selection of documentaries.
BEST UK SHORT FILM
The breeding ground for the most important new filmmakers, short film is an incredibly vibrant and vivid area of filmmaking, seemingly becoming more exciting and respected on its own terms year on year; it boasts a far higher glass ceiling in terms of gender and ethnic diversity than the world of feature films. Here we recognise a powerful voice working in short form, challenging the well-trodden cliché that a short film is somehow flimsier than a feature.

OPENING NIGHT ALLEYCATS +Q&A & AFTERPARTY
Dir: Ian Bonhôte First Feature | UK | 2016 | 100 min World Premiere Genesis Thursday 23 June, 7.00pm £15
Every year, the East End Film Festival seeks to champion the most exciting, distinctive new films from first and second time directors. Seeking the irrepressible creativity and energy that comes from first steps into feature filmmaking, and stories that touch on the nature of life in London, the EEFF’s Opening Night Gala is a space for us to delight in the announcement of important new voices in film.
CLOSING NIGHT GARY NUMAN: ANDROID IN LA LA LAND +Q&A & AFTERPARTY Dirs: Steve Read, Rob Alexander UK | 2016 | 85 min London Premiere Genesis Sunday 3 July, 7.00pm £12.50
In 2016’s Opening Night Gala film, London-based filmmaker Ian Bonhote makes a rip-roaring debut feature in Alleycats, a thriller that romps through the streets of London from the seat of a bicycle. When bike courier Chris witnesses what looks like a murder, his first instinct is to cut and run. But when his curiosity draws him back in, he’s soon embroiled in a world of corruption, political power, and illegal bike racing.
His sister Danni has to take on the role of the hero, and go up against the entire establishment. Featuring a fantastic turn by John Hannah (Four Weddings & A Funeral, Sliding Doors, The Mummy) as a shady MP, Alleycats is a riotously entertaining, tense gauntlet ride through the streets of London (and East London), featuring a flock of rising British talent, all of them on wheels. An exciting, bold piece of Londoncentric filmmaking, we are delighted to present Alleycats as our Opening Night Gala.
Always celebrating the clash of sound and image, the East End Film Festival has a longstanding and passionate commitment to music and its mercurial creators. From Joe Strummer to The Libertines, and from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry to Amy Winehouse, East End Film Festival (EEFF) has been delighted to premiere some of the last decade’s finest music documentaries. Gary Numan: Android in La La Land is utterly at home in that company. A story of a man who has gone from global fame to the brink and back again, Steve Read & Rob Alexander’s film follows the artist behind bonafide smash hits Cars and Are ‘Friends’ Electric? as he returns to the world stage, and moves to California. An electronic music pioneer famous for his standoffish demeanour, sharp threads and eyeliner, Numan’s journey into the musical wilderness, long undiagnosed Asperger’s, marriage to his biggest fan, and triumphant return is the stuff great movies are made of. A human story with killer songs, Android in La La Land is a film for would-be Numanoids everywhere.

UEL CENTREPIECE GALA SHEPHERDS AND BUTCHERS +Q&A Dir: Oliver Schmitz South Africa | 2016 | 107 min London Premiere Hackney Picturehouse Wednesday 29 June, 7.00pm When a traumatised death row guard is arrested for a violent murder, no one in 1987 South Africa will take his case. But when maverick lawyer John Weber (Steve Coogan) steps forward, he challenges the very system that allows prisoners to be executed for their crimes, directly leading to a change to the law in the dying days of Apartheid. Featuring phenomenal turns from Coogan and Andrea Riseborough, Oliver Schmitz’s film is a powerful and harrowing drama inspired by true events.
FILMS A–Z
TURKISH STRAND Each year, the East End Film Festival presents a special focus on the cinema of one country. Inspired by the previous year’s Best Feature Award (reserved for first and second time directors), the winning filmmaker is invited to return to the festival the following year as EEFF’s Director in Residence. Heading up the Best Feature Jury, they work with the EEFF programming team to create a special national focus. We are delighted to welcome Turkish filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik to London as our Director in Residence for 2016. Described by Irvine Welsh as “A literal ship of fools piece...brilliantly directed and performed”, his second film, Ivy, was a deserving winner of last year’s prize.
Turkish Cinema doesn’t exist. There are just filmmakers from Turkey, and these are their films. That’s what I love about my country’s filmmakers, they are all unique. They don’t have a common sound. There’s no unity. I detest unity. There is only cinema, and this is its richness. This is where cinema begins for me: the luxury of not having to assume a common ground” —Tolga Karaçelik, Director-in-Residence, EEFF 2016
Working with us on a selection of films from some of Turkey’s most important, distinctive new directors, highlights of this year’s Turkish selection include a phenomenal state-of-the-nation thriller in Frenzy, two films from female directors (one of them Kurdish) that show very different sides of the generational divide, a rare foray into B Movie genre territory in Baskin, and a chance to see Karaçelik’s phenomenal debut, Toll Booth.

The bet of a lifetime takes centre stage in this London-set dramedy about dreaming big and rolling the dice. Jack (Tommy O’Neill) is down on his luck, and running out of chances to escape his increasingly precarious life. Betting it all on the horses, perhaps fortune beckons. Or maybe life isn’t that straightforward. Featuring Dexter Fletcher, this rollicking debut makes the case that when the odds are stacked against you, bet your life on it.
From a precarious past to an uncertain future. A River explores the River Afan’s polluted past and its miraculous recovery, while also focusing on the current battle of locals and environmentalists against fracking in the area. Narrated by actor Michael Sheen and featuring a soundtrack by Massive Attack musicians Robert Del Naj and Euan Dickinson, this is a paean to community, local democracy and the natural world.
This witty, moving debut finds Anna (a career-best Jodie Whittaker) hiding out in her mum’s garden shed. Making hilarious home movies, her isolation is a coping mechanism in the face of grief. But her family, friends and the rebellious child next door won’t let her cut herself off forever. A hilarious, heartfelt ode to moving on, from Rachel Tunnard, an important new voice in British film, this won the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival.

One of the greatest scandals in literary history; the story of JT Leroy is tailormade for the movies. Admired for his tough prose and tragic childhood, JT was revealed not to be the transgender child of a truck-stop prostitute, but 40-year-old phone sex operator Laura Albert. Having drawn the devotion of Tom Waits, Gus Van Sant, Madonna and Winona Ryder, there would be hell to pay when the truth came out. The tallest of tall tales.
A squad of unsuspecting cops plunge through a trapdoor—to a Hell created from their nightmares and darkest secrets—when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building. A rare foray into genre cinema from Turkey, laced with unbearable tension, blood-soaked torture scenes and ominous symbolism. Featuring a cast of terrifically convincing actors, this debut from Can Evrenol is a trip into your own worst nightmare.
An intimate portrait of friendship, love triangles and home furnishings, Jan Hillman’s debut feature follows the journey of three friends across London. Transporting a couch to its new home, this new bit of furniture is a vehicle for mining themes of friendship and unspoken desire among modern urban twentysomethings, in the process exploring the Tinder generation’s approach to sex, secrets and secondhand sofas.

A mesmerising cinematic experience, Dead Slow Ahead is documentary reimagined as horror science-fiction. Tracking the journey (or aimless drift?) of a freighter, its rhythms of work, machinery and the ocean are part commentary on post-industrial capitalism swallowing its workforce, part grotesque-romantic portraiture, part contemplation on what the end of the world might look like, with the last mechanical vestige of man following commands without purpose, and clanking along to nowhere. Hypnotic, extraordinary, terrifying.

Hackney Picturehouse Wednesday 29 June, 9.30pm
Rich Mix Wednesday 29 June, 6.00pm
Thrillingly ambitious and beautifully lo-fi, this John Carpenter-inflected debut takes place in a future, apocalyptic America. Cloaked in a minimal-synth score by MGMT’s Will Berman, and set decades after ‘the reset’, life in Sector 6 is dominated by surveillance, teen suicide and ‘80s technology. Brought together by a mysterious hard drive, Max and Simon begin to explore what lies outside the city limits. In doing so, they might just take down their fascistic overlords.
When American journalist and video reporter James Foley was murdered by ISIS in 2014, the video of his barbaric execution sent shockwaves around the world. Brian Oakes’ moving film explores Foley’s life, work, and untimely death, in the process shedding light on the dangerous world of conflict journalism in the Middle East, Foley’s character and personal relationships, and the awful toll of personal tragedy caught up in an inescapable 24-hour news cycle.

Loaded with electrifying archive footage, this is an unparalleled insight into a vibrant period of queer and NYC history.
WE ARE THE FLESH (TENEMOS LA CARNE)
The story of a journey across three continents, this incredibly personal drama bears witness to the complex daily dilemmas faced by illegal immigrants. Following a variety of women attempting to give their children a better future away from the hardships of their homeland, this crowdfunded film was shot in Iran, Greece and London, with much of the film taking place in the East End. The human face of a politicised issue, about people, not numbers.
WINWIN +Q&A
Dir: Daniel Hoesl Second Feature | Austria | 2016 | 84 min | UK Premiere Hackney Picturehouse Thursday 30 June, 9.00pm
‘Three investors, wolves in sheep’s clothes, can’t for the life of them find heart or soul. In their jets they circle the globe, preaching love and earning gold. Smoke and mirrors is their game, ministers, unions and kings enjoy their fame. Gambling with open cards at the table, where there’s no risk, there’s only one aim: the truth is a lie, ‘cause lying is real—when you get pranked, how does it feel?’ Supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum
BEST FEATURE COMPETITION
Dir: Emiliano Rocha Minter First Feature | Mexico | 2016 | 79 min UK Premiere Hackney Picturehouse Friday 1 July, 9.00pm Grisly, beautiful and frequently bonkers, We Are The Flesh is a fairytale of power, rebirth and fresh meat. Wandering through a ruined city, a young brother and sister discover a building inhabited by a mysterious hermit. Offering them sanctuary, it’s the beginning of a spiritual, visceral journey that offers the possibility of rebirth, in Emiliano Rocha Minter’s utterly distinctive, visually extraordinary kaleidoscope of a debut. Produced by Carlos Reygades and EEFF 2014 Director in Residence Sebastian Hofmann, this may be the work of Latin America’s next great director. Also supported by Mexican heavyweights Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuaron, you’ve never seen anything quite like this.
THE WORLD IS MINE +Q&A Dir: Nicolae Constantin Tanase First Feature | Romania | 2015 | 104 min | UK Premiere Rich Mix Friday 1 July, 9.00pm Larisa is just a normal tearaway teenager. Obsessed with boys and social status, her confidence in controlling her life comes crashing down when she falls for Florin, the local lothario. Bringing her into conflict with her schoolmate Anna, a girl from a wealthy family chasing the same boy, Larisa will do whatever’s necessary to get what she wants. Starring non-professionals cast on Facebook, this is an impressive portrait of being young in a small town. Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

SCREENINGS The Temple at Andaz London Liverpool Street Hotel
THE
WARNING Cinema explores the world we inhabit; it’s able to look at the world and highlight ills—past and present— and set up the various possibilities of our future. With The Warning we package these stories into one large narrative, starting with a voice from the past, following through unease, unrest and the inevitable resistance. Sadly this tale takes a dark turn where warnings were ignored and we end up in the seemingly inevitable dystopian future, where the struggles, though different, have continued headlong towards collapse. The Warning weaves it’s way through Freemasonry’s historical connections to the crafts folk and guilds and their own grand aims of unification and fraternity, while being conspiratorially viewed as a secretive organisation for world domination. What could possibly go wrong? —Josh Saco, Masonic Temple programmer

This summer A Curious Invitation and the East End Film Festival will return to the marbled splendour of the City’s only original Freemasons’ lodge for a macabre night of cabaret, circus and cinema.

9.30PM FANTASTIC PLANET LIVE SOUNDTRACK BY JC FLOWERS (ATP RECORDS)
JC Flower’s debut album was written and recorded in their practice room overlooking Canary Wharf, with its muted frisson of diminishing returns. Playing a selection of Middle Eastern, spunk funk, Electro chaabi, and space bangers, witness the records of DJ John Doran (The Quietus) being manipulated by Natalie Sharp (Lone Taxidermist), interfering via sharp splices, loops and effects applied to voice and analogue synths, all on the fly and in the moment. With Ross Blake adding his special brand of surreal visuals.

It is clear in my mind that our journey to get our second, now funded, feature film into production began with our experience at Mind the Gap 2015. The opportunity to listen to, and meet, other filmmakers from different parts of the production process was invaluable. Filmmaking can sometimes feel a lonely process, but it shouldn’t be, and the Mind the Gap initiative helped both myself and [director] Yousaf tremendously by bringing together all the resources that we needed to understand where we belong within the industry.” —Michael Taylor, producer Giantlands. LAUNCH YOUR FILM CAREER at the University of East London.
At the University of East London we’re proud of our creative community of students, staff and alumni and our fantastic location in the thriving artistic, cultural hot bed of east London.
Join us and you could be studying under an acclaimed BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, or an animator whose hand-crafted short was screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
From fine art to photography, from computer games design to creative and professional writing, from fashion marketing to filmmaking, we have the course to launch your career.
On any given day you could be making films with actual celluloid on 16mm cameras, or listening to experts discuss their craft at our state-of-the-art Moving Image Research Centre.
Join us at our Open Day on Saturday 25th June uel.ac.uk/open-days
