DEGREES OF

DIFFERENCE EASTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

DEGREES OF DIFFERENCE An Eastern degree is distinctive. In addition to high quality academic programs, you will discover your potential in small classes and find your place in our close-knit campus community. In earning your degree, you will make a difference in your family, your community and the world around you.

Eastern students gain broad intellectual skills grounded in applied experience • Learn the critical thinking, problem solving and written communication skills highly sought by U.S. employers. • At large universities, most student research is conducted by graduate students. Eastern students start undergraduate research as freshmen. • Make a difference in the community through service learning.

We offer exceptional facilities • Residential environment with most students living on campus • State-of-the-art Science and Fine Arts centers • Confocal microscope lab • Only digital history lab in Connecticut • Only undergraduate program in Connecticut with Anatomage virtual dissection table • Virtual sandbox, 3-D printing lab, motion capture technology labs

Eastern is committed to graduating our students in four years • Each freshman creates a four-year academic plan in their first semester. • Our dual-advising program keeps them on track to graduate in four years. • 85% of all Eastern graduates finish in 4 years.

SUCCESS AFTER EASTERN Eastern graduates are employed at Cigna, Travelers, Pfizer, ESPN, Pratt & Whitney, The Hartford, United Technologies, Electric Boat and many other companies and organizations in Connecticut, New England and elsewhere.

Patrice Eugene ’20 (English and Sociology) plans to attend law school and pursue immigration law because of his experience interning at the Chicago-Kent College of Law in summer 2018. During the internship, he worked with judges and lawyers at government law firms while attending law classes. “Internships are great opportunities to act immediately on your passion, interest and curiosity. There are tons of opportunities at Eastern and if you find something missing, there’s always room to create it.”

91% of U.S. employers say

the skills gained in a liberal arts education — critical thinking, collaboration, communication, problem-solving — are more valuable than your major.

Jonas Bjørnes ’18 (Political Science) is pursuing a master’s degree in international social and public policy at the London School of Economics. “My political science degree from Eastern has been extremely helpful for my graduate studies, because the core classes covered theories and methods that are examined to a greater extent in my social policy-related courses.”

Yuberki Delgadillo ’18 (Biology) received her BSN at the UConn School of Nursing and is now a registered nurse at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. She volunteered at a health clinic in West Africa, conducted research on Alzheimer’s disease and presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Oklahoma. “I became interested in health care because of my experiences at Eastern. I love helping people and getting them resources they need.”

Haley Knox ’19 (Mathematics) is a big data software engineer at Cigna. “My Eastern education set me up with a great foundation for my current job. With math, there’s a lot of perseverance in solving a large, multi-step problem. With software engineering, it’s a similar algorithmic way of thinking. The foundation of programming I learned at Eastern through statistics courses and my computer science minor has helped me tremendously.”

ALUMNI IN THE FIELD Josh DeSouza ’18 Business Information Systems, Business Administration Technical Architect, Pratt & Whitney Julia Leitao ’18 Early Childhood Education, Theatre First-grade teacher, New Britain Public Schools Emily Mantel ’18 Individualized Major: Environmental Studies CST Technician, Eco Rental Solutions Caroline Scarrozzo ’18 Business Administration Marketing Associate, ITW Permatex Alyson Augenstein ’19 Environmental Earth Science Scientist, Woodard and Curran Jonathan Rappi ’19 Biology Research Associate, Halda Therapeutics Abigail Ridler ’20 Biology Research Assistant, Children’s Hospital, Philadelphia Al Viglione ’20 Economics/BIS ECLDP Associate, The Hartford

Freddy Cruz ’18 (Business Administration and Business Information Systems) is a software developer at Travelers. He was a student leader on campus, serving as president of Eastern’s Organization of Latin American Students, and working as a resident assistant and orientation counselor. “Get involved with anything that’s going to take you to the next level. Find those students who might not be where you are and help them to elevate themselves.”

Tess Candler ’18 (Political Science and Economics) is an associate financial analyst at Cognex Corporation. “Eastern was a great place to develop my research skills because professors are truly interested in working with students. Whenever I approached a professor about independent study, I was met with enthusiasm. I think the fact Eastern is a small, primarily undergraduate school contributed to that environment.”

Eastern’s small size afforded him one-on-one research opportunities with faculty. “It was a great chance to do some independent learning and gain lab skills that we don’t always get in class. It also allowed me to make connections with professors, which ultimately resulted in a meaningful letter of recommendation for graduate school.”

Graduate schools attended by Eastern alumni include Boston College, Northeastern, Georgetown, Columbia, William & Mary, the University of Chicago, Boston University, Hofstra, Fordham, Johns Hopkins, New York University and Syracuse.

Rachel Berkowsky ’18 (Sport and Leisure Management) is pursuing a master’s degree in Exercise Science at the University of Connecticut. “My Eastern degree prepared me for graduate school by teaching me time management and dedication to hard work. And the research methods classes I took were extremely beneficial because the Exercise Science program at UConn is all research-based.”

HANDS-ON LEARNING

Most Eastern students experience some form of applied learning – undergraduate research mentored by faculty, internships and co-ops, service learning, study abroad and countless other opportunities!

Internships

Newly renovated Communication Building includes a state-of-the-art TV Studio

800+ internships a year

Eastern students take paid and credit-based internships in local schools and social agencies, at ESPN and the State Legislature, at Cigna and Disney World, and hundreds of other locations. Students gain intensive fieldwork experience and hands-on training that builds upon the theoretical foundations they’ve learned in the classroom.

Jafet Aparicio Santos ’22 (Computer Science and Mathematics) interned with Cigna, writing scripts that allow the health insurance company’s databases to connect with one another. “My internship complemented my majors. I was able to directly apply what I learn in my classes to my work.” He noted that he has also improved his collaboration skills, as most of his assignments required him to work with several peers at a time.

Stefanos Stravoravdis ’20 (Biology and Mathematics) is in the Ph.D. program in microbiology at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. As an undergraduate researcher, he completed a summer fellowship at Cornell University, collaborated with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station for his honors thesis, and published research in the Journal of Microbiology. “I am grateful to have worked with wonderful mentors who have given me so many opportunities to learn, discover, achieve and talk ‘science’ from start to finish.”

Research At Eastern, faculty-mentored undergraduate research takes place in all majors. Student researchers start as freshmen, exploring topics ranging from genetics to European literature, autism and the use of social media in election campaigns. Because of Eastern’s focus on undergraduate education, a higher percentage of Eastern undergraduates conduct research than at large research universities.

Katrishia Bell ’20 (Environmental Earth Science) conducted field research on Block Island, taking photos and logging data using various software to track coastal erosion. “Going into the field helps to cement concepts that are sometimes easier to understand when you actually apply the knowledge you’ve acquired.”

Whether it’s touring the glaciers of Iceland, visiting Renaissance architecture in Florence, Italy, or studying marine biology in the Bahamas, Eastern students study abroad throughout the globe.

Living close to classes, the library, dining hall, technology resources and support services is not only convenient — national data also shows students who live on campus get better grades and graduate on time. Residential students enjoy services ranging from a campus shuttle bus to social activities in their halls to leadership programs. You can also join a Theme Housing community — everything from Green Theme to Gender Inclusive.
