From the President’s Desk In the past several months, our nation has seen the most disruptive economic and financial conditions since the Great Depression. I am reminded during such times of the importance of Eastern’s mission to prepare graduates for an ever-changing world, while making sure Eastern is accessible to students from all backgrounds. Whatever professional opportunities our students pursue, Eastern graduates are well prepared for the challenges they will encounter. Nine of every 10 Eastern students stay in our state after they graduate, serving as talented members of the Connecticut workforce and as contributing members of their local communities. Our students gain real-life experience and marketable skills that they can immediately use in the workplace. An Eastern education is grounded in the liberal arts, providing each of our students with skills and knowledge they can adapt to the social, technological and economic changes of the 21st century. As a January 2007 report of the Association of American Colleges and Universities concluded, “In an economy fueled by innovation, the capabilities developed through a liberal education have become America’s most valuable economic asset.” Even in the midst of unsettling economic news, our faculty, students and alumni continue to excel. In this issue of EASTERN magazine, you will read how Eastern utilizes the generosity of its donors to provide much-needed scholarship assistance to deserving students. You will also learn about a group of nine Eastern math graduates who are making use of their skills at a U.S. Navy research facility in Rhode Island. And you will get a glimpse of undergraduate research at Eastern, led by Psychology Professor Deirdre Fitzgerald, which is occurring in the field of autism. These and other stories about the academic and professional accomplishments of Eastern students, faculty and alumni remind me every day that our University adds value to people’s lives and remains an essential resource to the State of Connecticut. To the more than 2,000 donors listed in this issue, I would like to say “thank you” for your unwavering support. With this continued support, we shall prevail in our quest to become a premier public liberal arts university, a University of First Choice.

EASTERN ALUMNI ADICHIE NAMED A MACARTHUR FELLOW Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ’01 continues to shine as a star in the literary world. On Sept. 23, the Chicagobased John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation named Adichie one of 25 MacArthur Fellows for 2008. Each awardee will receive $500,000 in “no strings attached” support over the next five years.

novel, “Purple Hibiscus,” published in 2003, immediately gained international attention, with one reviewer calling

Adichie received a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 2003. This past May she earned an M.A. from Yale University. MacArthur Fellowships allow recipients to accelerate their current activities or take their work in new directions. The 25 Fellows work across a broad spectrum of professions and include a neurobiologist, a saxophonist, a critical care physician, an urban farmer, an optical physicist, a sculptor, a geriatrician, a historian of medicine, and an inventor of musical instruments.

Adichie, winner of Eastern’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004, was named Nigeria, West Africa’s Artist of the Year in January 2008. In November 2007, she won Britain’s Orange Prize for Fiction, that country’s top literary prize, for her most recent novel, “Half of a Yellow Sun,” published in 2006. Adichie’s debut

MAKING HIS MARK AS AN AUTHOR Like most Eastern Connecticut State University alumni, Paul Karrer ’77 is grateful that Eastern has helped him achieve his dreams — in his case, as a sixth-grade elementary school teacher in Monterey, CA. Karrer helped put Eastern’s exchange program on the map. “I was in the first bunch of Eastern exchange students to go to England,” he recalled. “That experience was amazing. Since that time, I’ve set off to the many far corners of our planet. Eastern was my starting point.” After graduating from Eastern with his teaching certificate, Karrer toured the world for eight years with the Peace Corps, visiting countries such as Samoa, England and Korea. In addition to being a teacher, Karrer is a prolific writer. He writes mostly nonfiction short stories about his teaching experiences and the places in which he

it “a monumental literary achievement and a prayer for Nigeria.”

has taught. He is a frequent contributor to radio, where he offers political editorials. Karrer has given public readings of his works in the San Francisco area; has been published in numerous magazines and periodicals; and his work has appeared in “Chicken Soup for the Mother & Daughter Soul,” “Chicken Soup for the Unsinkable Soul,” “Chicken Soup for the College Soul,” “A 4th Course of Chicken Soup for the Soul,” and “Open My Eyes, Open My Soul: Celebrating Our Common Humanity.” Karrer is currently at work on a memoir about the communication he has had with one of his former fifth-grade students, now serving a 13-year prison sentence. He has compiled more than two years of letters and correspondence for the memoir, tentatively titled “I Sleep With One Eye Open — An Inmate’s Letters to His Fifth-Grade Teacher.” JEFFREY WARZECHA ’07

Robert Brewster ’68 remembers when Professor Ralph Yulo taught his class how to create a simple hot air balloon: “My friends and I decided to try the experiment — on a much larger scale. We taped dry cleaner bags together and lit several boxes of birthday candles. After launching the balloon at night on High Street near Burr Hall, we watched in amazement as the balloon rose into the sky — and never noticed the screams from Burr or the sirens in downtown Willimantic! “The glowing balloon rose 1,000 feet in the air before catching fire. The next morning, we were shocked to hear that the women in Burr Hall had been panicked by a ‘UFO.’ The police and fire departments were called, and Air Force jets from Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee were later scrambled to investigate the sighting. Fearing suspension, we never spoke of the incident (even to each other) until I finally revealed the story to President Elsa Núñez at the Orlando alumni reception this past spring.”

For Eleanor (Labinger) Freedman ’51, her decision to enroll in a particular class turned out to be a life-changing one. In 1947, she took a political science course with Professor Francis Willey. Willey urged his students to attend a convention at the Hartford Armory for former Minnesota Gov. Harold Stassen, who was running as a presidential candidate for the Republican party. Three years later, while teaching in Rocky Hill, she was introduced to Frank Freedman, a young lawyer from Springfield, MA. They discovered that they had both attended the same convention in 1947. “One thing led to another. We were married in July 1953.” Her husband became assistant attorney general in western Massachusetts, then mayor of Springfield for three terms before being appointed chief judge for Massachusetts, where he served on the bench for 30 years. “Professors know best — I’m certainly glad I took Professor Willey’s advice!”

ALUMNI RECRUITERS ATTEND ACCOUNTING FAIR Recruiting remains strong on campus, despite the faltering economy. At the fourth annual Accounting Career Fair held Oct. 9, more than 30 recruiters met with upwards of 100 accounting majors to hire interns and employees. INAUGURAL “EASTERN FELLOWS” NAMED To help celebrate the opening of the new Science Building, four alumni who graduated from Eastern with science-related degrees came back to campus on Oct. 21 to participate in the new “Eastern Fellows” program, which recognizes Eastern alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers. It is hoped that the program will enrich the education of current Eastern undergraduates by exposing them to alumni who are willing to share their specialized academic and work experiences. The first group of Eastern Fellows participated in a panel discussion in the Science Building’s resource room. Panelists included: Adam Baldinger ’88, curatorial associate for the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology; Eric Lazo-Wasem ’79, the senior collections manager in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Peabody Museum at Yale University; Veterinarian Wendy Ernst ’93, who practices in Lebanon, CT; and Frederick Johnson ’78, senior vice president for GEI Consultants, Inc., an environmental consulting firm. Also appointed an Eastern Fellow was Francis Falck Jr. ’75, a leading eye surgeon in southeastern Connecticut, who will meet students at a later date. Johnson said that Eastern had taught him problem-solving skills, and he encouraged today’s students to “keep asking why . . . remain curious.” Ernst recalled thinking, “I will

never take another science course” after high school but took Human Biology her first year and “everything changed for me. I ended up being very happy that I stayed here.” Ballinger said, “Where I am now I could not have achieved without my education at Eastern, especially my work in biology.” Laso-Wassem said, “I can’t get over the campus. This really has become a public liberal arts university.”

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS The ECSU Alumni Association Board of Directors recently welcomed six new members for 2008–09. The new members are: Chelsea Adams ’07 of Naugatuck, internal communications specialist for Hartford Public Schools; Wayne I. Benjamin ’89 of Windsor, senior project manager for the City of Hartford’s Economic Development Department; Keri Ellis ’03, a resident of Rogers, AR, who is the channel marketing manager for Honeywell Consumer Products Group; Bert Nussbaum ’63 of Lakewood, NJ, a studentteaching intern supervisor for Rutgers University and a mentor for school principals for the New Jersey State Department of Education; Maribel Sanchez ’04 of Wethersfield, a program advisor for the University of Connecticut’s Educational Talent Search Program; and Kelvin Harris ’05 of Baltimore, MD, who is the community director for the Office of Residential Life at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. ECSU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Call for Nominations for the Board of Directors The ECSU Alumni Association Board of Directors Nominating Committee is actively seeking names of alumni interested in serving on the Board. We are looking for a diverse slate consistent with our student and alumni populations. Self-nominations are encouraged. The Board is composed of a maximum of 18 directors. Each director shall be an active member of the Association, and shall be elected to a three-year term by a majority vote at the annual meeting.

Eastern was on the road again during the fall semester, hosting alumni receptions in Manchester, NH; Springfield, MA; and New York, NY. Kenneth DeLisa, vice president for institutional advancement, greeted alumni gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester in early September, while President Elsa Núñez hosted receptions at Butterfield 8 in Midtown Manhattan in October and at the Marriott Hotel in Springfield in November.

The receptions brought alumni together for social and professional networking. DeLisa and Núñez also updated alumni on the latest news from the University, including the new Strategic Plan, the new Master Plan and the shifting trends taking place among incoming students who are making Eastern their “University of First Choice.” Watch for information on upcoming alumni receptions planned for the spring. first in their families to attend college, and many come from modest family backgrounds. With state and federal contributions lagging behind the rising costs of higher education, scholarships are critical to students’ ability to afford a college degree.

support. Some are for students with need, many are aimed at students in particular majors, and still others stipulate special circumstances for recipients. In April 2008, more than $210,000 was awarded to 189 Eastern students.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 2,000 annual donors, Eastern offers various scholarship opportunities for students. A number of endowed competitive scholarships are awarded each year to continuing and returning students. Approximately 100 named scholarships are currently funded by the ECSU Foundation, Inc., the University’s vehicle for attracting and managing scholarship

Sulthana Sayed ’09 of Waterbury said the scholarships she has received from the ECSU Foundation are among the resources she has used to make her mark on campus. Sayed, who is a resident assistant and the president of the Student Government Association, is the recipient of the Windham Pepsi Scholarship and the

Yankee Gas Endowed Scholarship. “A strong influence to excel academically was the ability to receive additional financial aid and support from Eastern,” she said. The University Honors Program, which was founded in 1973, offers full in-state tuition scholarships to all students who are accepted as Honors Scholars. As a general guideline, incoming freshmen in the program have graduated in the top 10 percent of their class and have a combined critical reading and math SAT score of at least 1230. Continuing or transfer students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above. In fall 2008, 24 Honors scholarships were awarded to incoming students. These scholarships are renewable

annually as long as the students maintain a specific grade point average, complete at least one Honors course per year, and demonstrate active involvement in the co-curricular and scholarly activities of the Honors Program and the University community. This past fall, Eastern also implemented a new merit-based scholarship program to recognize talented students while also encouraging academic excellence and timely graduation. While the awards do not cover all tuition costs — amounts range from $2,000 to $3,000 per year — they are significant to recipients, and help some students complete their financial plan to attend Eastern. The scholarships are also renewable annually, providing that the students maintain a specific grade point average, fulfill on-campus housing requirements, and make successful progress toward timely graduation. The merit-based scholarships are awarded in addition to any need-based financial aid that a student might receive. Through the merit-based scholarship initiative, the University seeks not only to recognize high-achieving students, but also to help make it possible for these students to attend Eastern, their college of first choice, according to Kimberly Crone, director of admissions and enrollment management. “In selecting merit-based scholarship recipients, we are acknowledging students who have demonstrated academic rigor

in high school, have selected Eastern as their university of first choice and have a strong commitment to contribute to Eastern’s public liberal arts community,” she said. “The scholarships help us to recruit and retain these students so they can live on campus full time and serve as role models for other students. The scholarships also serve as incentives for recipients to graduate in four years. We want these academic achievers to become successful Eastern alumni.” Sixty-four incoming freshmen and transfer students received merit-based scholarships in fall 2008. According to the recipients, the scholarships were a key factor when considering schools. “I was very torn between Eastern and another college so the scholarship was the deciding factor for me,” said Brittney Cava, a freshman from Torrington. Cava, who is majoring in history and social science, was a National Honor Society member and honor roll student in high school who graduated in the top 20 percent of her class.

scholarship played a significant factor in her decision to attend Eastern. “I did not come to Eastern solely for the scholarship, but it did help take some of the burden off my parents,” she said. Macaluso, who graduated in the top 15 percent of her high school class, also served as a peer mentor and was captain of her soccer team. “The scholarship was a big reason why I came to Eastern,” said Adriana Dilberto of Waterbury, a freshman majoring in English and secondary education. Dilberto was a straight-A student in high school who graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. Donations to scholarship funds help ensure that the ECSU Foundation can provide more scholarship aid, thereby assisting more students. In some cases, award amounts can be increased with additional philanthropic support. early 150 Eastern Connecticut State University alumni, faculty members and invited guests gathered in the Betty R. Tipton Room of the Student Center on Oct. 18 to honor Biology Professor Michael Gable, who retired from full-time teaching after 36 years at Eastern. The event kicked off at 4 p.m. with a social hour and tours of the new Science Building, which opened in September. Eastern alumni — many of whom had not returned to campus in a number of years — marveled at the size and elegance of the 174,000square-foot facility. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Gayle (Lambert) Sirpenski ’78, adding that she was impressed with the amount of laboratory space in the building. “When I was taking science classes, we were in Goddard, which had small rooms. The new building is state-of-the-art.”

Kenneth DeLisa, vice president for institutional advancement, welcomed the attendees and thanked donors who have made pledges to the Michael F. Gable Student Assistantship Fund. DeLisa announced that donations to the fund had already reached $40,000. “This is a testament to your generosity and to the impact that Mike had on Eastern students,” he said. Additional remarks were made by Carmen Cid, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, who said the Eastern community “owes Mike Gable a lot for his zest for fun and his love of teaching”; by Biology Professor Martin Levin, who related several humorous anecdotes about his longtime friendship with Gable; and by Eastern President Elsa Núñez, who recounted Gable’s inspirational impact on his students over the years. “Mike Gable is a perfect example of what makes an institution like Eastern special,” Núñez said. “It’s not about our campus and our facilities. presentations, journal articles, and other trappings of academe, although Mike has certainly held his own in those ranks. It is about making an enduring impact on the life and career of our students, by helping them find their muse and immerse themselves in their passion.” Núñez then invited guests to participate in a lighthearted game of “Name That Bug,” in recognition of Gable’s lifelong research focus. A slideshow of photographs of various “bugs” was displayed, and the attendees were challenged to shout out the Latin name for each. Interspersed with photos of amphipods such as Quadrimaera were pictures of a Volkswagon Beetle and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, which provoked laughter from the crowd. (Everyone remembered Gable’s vintage Gremlin, known for its own “bugs.”)

After dinner, several alumni took the podium to share their gratitude and admiration for Gable as a teacher, mentor and friend. Adam Baldinger ’88 said he realized that he would pursue a career in invertebrate zoology after taking one of Gable’s classes. “Mike has significantly contributed to my success as a biologist, and ultimately to my career,” said Baldinger, a curatorial associate for the Departments of Invertebrate Zoology and Malcology at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology. Eric Lazo-Wasem ’79, who is the senior collections manager in the

Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the Peabody Museum at Yale University, talked about the major debt he owes to Gable: “When I first arrived at Eastern in 1975, I never imagined that my whole scientific career would take the path it has. The great foundation I got from Eastern and from Mike Gable has opened all the doors that I’ve been able to travel through scientifically.” Thomas Poirier ’76 described how Gable’s encouragement had convinced him to continue his studies. “Thanks to Mike Gable, I started to think that this kid from Waterbury, who didn’t think he would even finish college, was where he should be,” said Poirier, now an infectious disease physician in Gainesville, FL. Other alumni echoed the sentiments of the featured speakers, remembering Gable as a professor who was passionate about teaching and his students. “Dr. Gable’s classes were intensive, but we learned a lot,” said William Tyminiski ’03, who is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in geography at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “After taking his class, you felt that you could do well in any class.”

Gable thanked the crowd for attending the event, and named his parents, siblings, other family members, friends, Eastern administration and Biology Department faculty and staff as driving forces, adding that the principal force in his life was his students. “I’ve been fortunate to have this job — I’ve had fun for 36 years,” he said. “Tonight you have made me feel very, very valued, and I thank you very much.”

uick, get out your calculators. What is the mathematical probability that one research center comprising approximately 4,400 military and civilian personnel working at sites around the world would include nine Eastern graduates?

The Naval Undersea Research Center (NUWC), headquartered in Newport, RI, is the Navy’s full-spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, and fleet support center for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and offensive and defensive weapons systems associated with undersea warfare. It is also where nine Eastern alumni of the Math and Computer Science Department are currently employed.

vehicle, thinks it has to do with the quality of education that Eastern alumni bring to the workplace. “I suspect the first individuals with Eastern credentials ultimately turned out to be well prepared to support NUWC and the local contractor’s missions. Those individuals probably opened the doors for others,” he said. According to Moorcroft, the stream of Eastern alumni to the naval facility may have had its start with a student co-op program that was offered through the New London base before it was transferred and combined with the Newport division in 1996. Moorcroft participated in the program and was an enthusiastic advocate of the experience. “A lot of the work was quite interesting, and I was thrilled with what I was doing,” he said. His current job, which he says is “basically to break things,” involves testing sonar systems in the Virginia Class subs. For Lilly, the path to NUWC led directly from the U.S. Navy, where he served for 20 years. He now works as an acoustic intercept and ranging

project manager at a NUWC facility in Hawaii. “I started taking classes at Eastern because I was working with guys who were doing inputting and signal processing, and I had to understand what they were talking about,” said Lilly. “I knew Eastern had a pretty good math and computer science program.” Staff Sergeant John Wynne, who was deployed to Iraq in May for an 18month stint with his National Guard unit, works on the hardware-to-hardware interfaces for heavyweight torpedoes at NUWC. He was hired at the Newport facility in 2001 after a stint at Computer Sciences Corporation. His wife, Basha Wynne, worked as a contractor at NUWC before being hired in January 2008. Schmidt, an ASW Combat Systems and Future Sensors Resource Officer, oversees NUWC’s antisubmarine warfare underwater sensors program in Washington, DC, where he has been stationed for the past four years. He said it was the value of a bachelor’s degree that attracted him to the University. “I had an associate’s degree, had several patents to my name and had published a number of documents. But after 15 years, I could only go so far at NUWC with that degree,” he said, adding that a conversation with colleague and fellow Eastern alumnus Lilly “convinced me that going to Eastern was the right thing to do.” He said he was drawn to Eastern because of the flexibility of the program as well. “I could go to school nights and on the Army Staff Sergeant John Wynne ’97

weekends — it allowed me to use the time I had to pursue my degree.” According to Schmidt, his Eastern degree has propelled him up the career ladder at NUWC. “The degree has been an enabler for all the positions I’ve had since then,” he said. “I was a program manager. But after I got my degree, I got into bigger project management and then was invited to take an assignment in Washington. Now I work for the Chief of Naval Operations.” Basha Wynne, who conducts reliability/maintainability/availability analyses and sustainability studies for the submarine combat systems, believes her degree will prove invaluable no matter where she works. “I don’t think it’s specific to NUWC — a degree from Eastern helps no matter where someone applies. Getting my degree was a building block necessary for expanding my professional growth,” she said. Added Basilica, “Ultimately the real value of an Eastern education is realizing that the University has given you the skills and confidence to tackle problems as they arise both professionally and personally.” EASTERN

Schulte, who works with children with disabilities at Area Corporative Educational Services in North Haven, says Eastern’s program “has allowed me to learn more about autism. . . the field of autism and other pervasive developmental disabilities is the area I wish to pursue as a career.”

From ARMY to STUDENT ATHLETE After serving in Afghanistan, Eastern student returns with new perspective BY TRISTAN HOBBES ’09 AND ROBERT MOLTA

isiting the battlefields of Gettysburg as a child had always fascinated David Earle. After graduating in 2000 from Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Earle enlisted in the Army and attended basic training before enrolling at Eastern Connecticut State University in fall 2001.

The following seven years were complicated. After attending three semesters at Eastern, Earle was activated by the Army. In 2004, he found himself at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and then on his way to Afghanistan, where he served from January 2006 through April 2007. While at Eastern, Earle had been an integral member of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track-andfield teams. In Afghanistan, he was just another soldier doing his job as a member of the Provincial Reconstruction Team — a group of soldiers who act as bodyguards while the local Afghan people build roads and schools and dig wells. Earle called Bagram Air Base in the province of Parwan home for a year. Although the base afforded some of the comforts of home, Earle was shot at several times and witnessed a car bombing. Such experiences have had a lasting impact. “I am always on alert,” he said. “Even basic noises like a train bring back memories.” In April 2007, Earle was discharged and returned to the United States with a new appreciation for things he had previously taken for granted. He re-enrolled at Eastern as a fulltime student in fall 2007 and plans to graduate in spring 2009 with a degree in history and American studies.

Upon his return to Eastern and the trackand-field program, Earle competed throughout this past indoor season at distances between 1,500 and 5,000 meters. After participating in the early meets of the outdoor season, he opted to spend the second half of the season conditioning on an individual basis and assisting the coaching staff. He admits that he became frustrated at his inability to match his previous successes. At 3,000 meters this year, Earle ran about one minute slower than his personal-best time of 9:50.84, set as a 19-year-old freshman six years ago. Although the time away from Eastern has had a visible effect on his athletic performance, Earle returned with a fresh approach to his academics. Only an average student during his first few semesters at Eastern, Earle compiled a 3.7 grade point average this past spring. Earle may not run as fast as he once did, but his life experiences are making the journey significantly more rewarding, and have made him a better teammate and student.

Sabbaticals for university professors were first introduced at Harvard University in 1880.The concept was to give professors a break or leave, a time when they were not expected to teach, but rather would have an opportunity for rejuvenation and restoration. Since then, sabbaticals have become an integral part of higher education in the United States, allowing faculty in thousands of colleges and universities the opportunity to enhance their skills as educators and scholars.

Sabbaticals Offer Benefits to Faculty and Students BY ANNE PAPPALARDO

iology Professor Elizabeth Cowles, chair of the Sabbatic Leave Committee, says faculty and their students benefit greatly from sabbatic leaves. “Sabbaticals allow time for personal reassessment and reflection. Faculty members arrive back recharged and ready to apply what they learned during their leaves in their teaching, research and other activities,” she said. Cowles believes that the University has much to gain from sabbaticals. “We work on projects to facilitate our professional development and make contacts outside of Eastern. This initiates dialog with others in our discipline and keeps us current in our areas of expertise, which ultimately benefits the University.” Faculty members who have returned from recent sabbaticals agree. Mary Kenny, associate professor of anthropology, spent the 2007-08 academic

year conducting fieldwork in a quilombo, a community formed by descendants of runaway slaves, in northeast Brazil. Her research focused on identity, memory and heritage. According to Kenny, “Sabbatical leaves are a gift of time for reflection, taking stock, and delving deeper into scholarly, professional and personal interests. Having time off from daily obligations and responsibilities allows for redirecting one’s energies to pursuits that are often placed on the back burner.” Kenny’s fieldwork in Brazil has enriched the classroom curriculum of her courses in which she discusses human rights, social justice, globalization and the effects of chronic poverty on people’s lives. Her sabbatical helped deepen her understanding of “the importance of local priorities, meanings, networks and relationships as markers of belonging and resistance to globalization and the

different ways in which globalization is understood and lived.” Kristin Jacobi, head of cataloging at the J. Eugene Smith Library, performed professional services, such as cataloging and classification, at the Charles Darwin Research Station Library in the Galapagos Islands between January and May 2008. Her trip was meant to extend Eastern’s outreach to those studying and/or working in the Galapagos Islands, which in turn may develop future exchanges or experiences. According to Jacobi, “That’s what sabbaticals are for — taking yourself out of your ordinary life to experience different opportunities and languages, places and people. It changes your life.” Dennis Canterbury, associate professor of sociology, traveled to Ghana, West Africa in fall 2007 to conduct research comparing West Africa and the Caribbean related to structural

adjustment, mining, labor and agriculture. In particular, he studied government policies and market conditions related to poultry, cotton, rice and cassava production, as well as the negative impact of gold and diamond mining. In addition, Canterbury taught political economy, sociological theory, and development theory classes to undergraduate and graduate sociology students at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, and conducted research on Hindus in Pedu, which is located in the central region of Ghana. He is also developing a study abroad program for Eastern students in Ghana. “In my case, the benefits included networking, seeing a new place and experiencing a new culture, and collaborating on research with peers. My visit to Ghana has transformed my life permanently.”

Wales, Australia in fall 2007 to conduct research on Aboriginal education at the university’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Center. One project he researched at Waratah West Public School in New South Wales involved an award-winning program to develop appreciation of Aboriginal culture; 25 percent of the students at the school are of Aboriginal descent. “Sabbaticals allow you to get away, renew, and establish discourse with peers in other places. It wakes you up to what goes on in the real world,” he said. Fourteen faculty members were approved for the 2008-09 academic

year. Some of the sabbaticals include plans to write books; develop and implement an Eastern student-run stress management service project for Windham public schools; and a trip to China which will lead to artwork depicting China’s social, economical, political and cultural transformation. Others involve teaching public administration and policy to graduate students in Serbia and the gathering of sunrise and sunset refraction data from Edmonton, Canada, to continue research on the variability of astronomical refraction. Whether performing sabbatical research in a foreign country or completing a book in their own home, the renewed energy and newfound knowledge of faculty upon their return to campus from sabbaticals is sure to enrich the lives of Eastern faculty, staff and students.

A Message from the Foundation President Dear Friends of Eastern: The roster of donors listed in this Annual Report of Donors covering fiscal year 2008 (July 1, 2007June 30, 2008) is visible proof of the generosity and support of the many alumni, friends, corporations, foundations, and faculty/staff who believe in the mission and direction of Eastern. In fact, FY08 was a milestone year for the ECSU Foundation, with total giving a record $6,999,242. We all know that Eastern has a history of transforming lives. Certainly endowed scholarships have been the focus of Eastern’s philanthropic efforts the past few years and the effects have been far reaching. The $35,000 endowed scholarship in honor of Dr. Stephen Kenton at the time of his retirement this past April was made possible by the generosity of many math alumni and friends, while the $4.4 million gift from the Estate of Dorothy Brown will provide heightened levels of scholarships for students with unmet financial need. With a larger scholarship endowment, we are better positioned to attract able students who otherwise could not afford a college education. The implications to the Eastern students, the local community and the state are immense when you consider that more than 85 percent of the University’s graduates remain in Connecticut to live and raise their families, diminishing the “brain drain” that can have lasting effects on our economy. Alumnae Soccer Game An Annual Tradition Women’s soccer team members and alumnae participated in the annual women’s soccer alumnae game this past August.

McFetridge Named to Pre-Season All-America Fourth Team Eastern women’s basketball center Ashley McFetridge, a senior from Canton, has been named to the D3hoops.com Pre-Season All-America fourth team. The 6-foot-2 inch McFetridge was one of 25 players named to the team. McFetridge was one of two players selected from New England.

McFetridge led the Warriors to a 24-5 record and their 11th NCAA Division III tournament appearance last year. She was named Little East Conference Player-of-the-Year and the conference tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. McFetridge was also named to the WBCA Division III All-District Team and repeated as first-team all-conference and conference All-Defensive Team selections. As a junior, she was additionally honored as Eastern’s Female Athlete-of-the-Year, was named to the inaugural LEC Academic Honor Roll and received an Eastern/E-Club Scholar-Athlete Award in her first season of eligibility.

Bedini Named to All-America Team Senior soccer defender Kyle Bedini of Manchester has been selected to the 2008 NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III All-America Team as a second-team choice. Bedini helped lead the Eastern men’s soccer team to its best season in 39 years this past fall. A four-year member of the program and a threeyear starter, Bedini joins forward Glenn Judge as the only All-America selections in Eastern history.

In all, the men’s soccer team led the balloting with seven all-conference selections while the women’s team trailed only LEC playoff champion Western Connecticut State University with six all-conference selections. An outside back, Lemieux becomes the women’s soccer program’s sixth player of the year and the second Defensive Player-of-the-Year in three years. She repeated as a first-team defender and was joined on the first team by junior Sarah Swann, a midfielder. One-third of the 12-person second team was composed of Eastern players. Despite having never run a road race at any distance, Cop set the goal of competing in the 26.2-mile ING Hartford Marathon held on Oct. 11.

Out of more than 1,900 finishers, Cop completed her first-ever marathon in the middle of the pack with a time of 4 hours and 14 minutes, netting her a thirdplace finish in her age group. “I was really fine until 21 miles, when my legs started to hurt and went numb at that point,” said Cop, adding that she got a mental boost from her parents and her Eastern swimming teammates, who cheered her on from the sidelines.

Australian Adventure Caps Snedeker’s Lacrosse Career Soon after the final horn sounded on May 1, 2008 – signaling the end of his collegiate lacrosse career – four-time All-Little East Conference defenseman Jon Snedeker ’08 of Southington was invited to compete with an amateur U. S. team in the Down Under Cup in Melbourne, Australia. The 2008 tournament, held from May 30 to June 2, attracted 11 men’s and women’s teams from the United States, Japan and Australia. Led by coaches

Richard Dommer of Herkimer Community College and Michael Brand of Misercordia University, Snedeker’s team took home the silver medal, finishing with an overall record of 3-1-1 after losing to the U19 Australian National team in the fourth overtime of the championship game.

“Everyone was so exhausted from playing four days straight, we had to give it everything we had. The crowd was cheering us on with a U-S-A...U-S-A chant! At that point, it almost felt like our whole country was watching, even though there were only a few hundred people,” said Snedeker. “We ended up giving up the game-winning goal during a penalty, but everyone was pulling for each other to get the job done and no one expected we would go so far.” Snedeker, a four-year starter at Eastern and a 2008 USILA Scholar AllAmerica Team selection, added that he

believes the tournament serves an important purpose. “With everything going on in the world today, it’s imperative that sports provide international goodwill among nations, and continue to offer opportunities furthering friendship and camaraderie,” he said. After each game, teams would trade their equipment and trade gear with each other. “It got interesting since a few teams didn’t speak English.” After the tournament, the two men’s and two women’s teams relaxed in Melbourne, located in southeastern Australia. Following their stay there, the teams traveled to Brisbane, where they went surfing and took in the sights on the famous Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay and Byron Bay. The U.S. teams also saw dolphins and whales off of the coast of the lighthouse in Byron Bay and koalas and kangaroos at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. After his long trip, Snedeker said he was glad to be back in Connecticut. Snedeker also thanked his donors for their generous contributions of nearly $6,000 that made this once-in-a-lifetime adventure possible for him.

Arts and Lecture Series Kicks Off Eighth Season Award-winning New York Times science reporter and author Andrew Revkin kicked off Eastern’s 2008-09 Arts and Lecture Series on Sept. 23. Revkin has spent a quarter of a century covering subjects ranging from the troubled relationship of science and politics to climate change at the North Pole. He spoke to 400 students and other audience memebers about his recent work, which exposed efforts by political appointees to rewrite federal climate reports and prevent NASA scientists from conveying their views on warming. On Oct. 2, eight scholars specializing in peace studies presented a panel in celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, recently recognized by the United Nations as an international day of nonviolence. The “Gandhi Peace Panel,” held in the Betty R. Tipton Room of the Student Center, discussed Gandhi’s

Eric Martin, associate professor of management in the Department of Business Administration, was named a recipient of a Fulbright Scholar Award by the U.S. Department of State and the J.William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

A resident of Willimantic, Martin is well known for his research on international development assistance in transitioning economies. He will continue to focus on strategy, planning and the inter-organizational dynamics and networks necessary for the implementation of effective assistance programs in developing countries. Martin has conducted research in the Balkans since 1999, and traveled to the region extensively on a variety of grants.

New Science Building is Dedicated More than 200 people, including local officials and area legislators, joined Connecticut Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, Eastern President Elsa Núñez and the campus community to dedicate Eastern’s new Science Building on Oct. 22. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $64 million, 174,000square-foot, facility was held in the atrium of the Science Building. “Our students and faculty are clearly pleased with the additional classroom space, new modern laboratories, and scientific equipment at their disposal. As they learn about science and prepare for careers in emerging fields, it is my hope that Eastern can make an even larger contribution to Connecticut’s high-tech workforce while preparing more science teachers for our schools,” said Núñez.

Núñez noted that the American Competitiveness Initiative calls for 100,000 more scientists, 100,000 more science teachers, and 800,000 more technicians in 10 years. She said the new building was a “major investment by the state of Connecticut in public higher education,” and applauded the General Assembly for its “visionary view of higher education.” All Eastern math and science courses that were spread across seven locations are now consolidated into the new facility. Departments housed in the new building include biology, biochemistry, computer sciences, environmental earth science, mathematics, and physical science. Such consolidation improves the capacity for science instruction and student-faculty research, creates a synergy between departments, and promotes interdisciplinary studies. It is expected the building will also become a conference site for local and regional meetings, especially those involving undergraduate research.

Martin is using the award to teach as a member of the Political Science faculty at the University of Belgrade in Belgrade, Serbia for the 2008–09 academic year.

Eastern Awarded U.S. Department of Education Grant Eastern’s Center for Early Childhood Education has been awarded an Early Reading First grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This past fall, Eastern received $1,409,697 to begin the three-year Community Partners for Early Literacy project. The center will utilize the grant funds to improve the language and literacy skills of approximately 500 preschoolaged children in Windham by providing professional development and mentoring to teachers in 15 preschool classrooms in the Windham Public Schools and at Eastern’s Child and Family Development Resource Center (CFDRC). The project will focus on developing the language and literacy skills of children for whom English is a second language, including the development of model bilingual classrooms. The project also will enhance literacy activities in children’s homes through a comprehensive family literacy program.

The center also provides students with information and assistance regarding academic matters; handles students’ academic appeals; and provides academic support services to freshmen, undeclared and probationary students.

Academic Services Center: One-Stop Shopping to Academic Success Eastern is well known for the close relationships forged between faculty, staff and students, and the new Academic Services Center (ASC) on the ground floor of the J. Eugene Smith Library is a reflection of the University’s close-knit community.

The different services provided at the ASC all have significance. Tutoring Services provide student Academic Coaches for Excellence (ACES) to assist students who request help in a particular subject or course. Services include tutoring support; one-on-one assistance in a variety of content areas; and experiences that enhance skills development and time management and provide academic support in other significant ways.

The Summer Transition at Eastern Program (STEP)/Contract Admissions Program (CAP) provides access and support to eligible students who take a pre-college summer program to help improve their chances of success as entering undergraduates. The MAC is a tutoring service offered by the Mathematics Department. The Writing Center offers the writing support services of trained student tutors, selected for their writing ability and interest in helping other students with writing assignments. “In just a few short weeks, the ASC has become an active and thriving center for tutoring services and advising. By the middle of November, more than 2,000 hours of student time in the center have been logged by students using the various services,” said Banach. • EMILY BONOYER ’10

“The Women” at Eastern

The ASC was created in response to feedback from students, who wanted additional, evening hours of operation for the University’s key academic support services. Bringing those services together into a “one-stop-shop” also has been well received by students. Faculty also appreciate being able to refer students to one easy-to-use location. Services in the ASC include the Advising Center, the Mathematics Achievement Center (MAC), Tutoring Services, STEP/CAP and the Writing Center. In the past, all these services have been spread across campus, but are now available in one location. “The library was chosen because the building is already open nights and weekends, and because of the synergy between library resources and the academic services being offered in the new center,” said Library Director Patricia Banach, who also serves as interim director of the ASC.

Akus Gallery and Eastern Students Combine Resources The Julian Akus Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University and People Helping People (PHP), a student-based community service group at Eastern, recently combined resources to engage the campus and the greater Willimantic community in a latex paint recycling project. Over a twoweek period in October, almost 300 gallons of paint were received and collected. Akus Gallery Director Elizabeth Peterson, Gallery Registrar Roxanne Deojay, students and PHP members Aiyanna Medeiros and Nate Oldham, and other volunteers sorted the paint by color, strain and mix; repackaged the paint; and donated the resulting cans to local community organizations. The paint recycling project was the kickoff to the gallery’s eco-art exhibition “It’s Getting Hot in Here,” which ran from Oct. 23 to Dec. 11. The exhibit, which reflected greener lifestyle trends and sustainability, explored how this progressive philosophy affects art making. Honors Students Spend Summer in Sweden This past summer, Performing Arts Professor Richard Jones-Bamman traveled to Sweden with a group of seven students as part of the Honors seminar, “Introduction to the Sámi Culture.” Jones-Bamman has conducted ethnomusicological fieldwork among the Sámi, Scandinavia’s indigenous population, for nearly 20 years. Honors students Jaime Seligmann, Zachary Doty, Scott Seaman, Veronica Hyde, Jennifer Royals, Tim Galipeau and Michelle Kaczynski, accompanied Jones-Bamman on the trip, which included visits to museums, ancient burial grounds and petroglyphs dating back 3,000 years. The group met with a reindeer herder in Mala, crossed into the Arctic Circle, and met with instructors from the Sámi Studies Department at Umeå University to discuss historical and contemporary issues facing the Sámi in Sweden.

American Red Cross Chair Honored with Chase Medallion

McElveen-Hunter’s accomplishments include serving as the first woman chairman in the American Red Cross’s 126-year history. From 2001–03, she was ambassador to Finland, served as a member of the international board of directors of Habitat for Humanity, and is founder of the United Way Billion Dollar Women’s Leadership Initiative.

On Sept. 22, in conjunction with the David T. Chase Free Enterprise Institute, Eastern conferred a Chase Medallion on Bonnie McElveenHunter, chairman of the American Red Cross and CEO of Pace Communications, the nation’s largest custom publishing company. The ceremony was held in the Paul E. Johnson Sr. Community Conference Room. The Chase Medallion, named after philanthropist David T. Chase, is given periodically to a business professional who is distinguished in the social, economic or political arenas. Eastern Sets the Table for Second Annual Day of Giving On Nov. 26, Eastern hosted a second annual Thanksgiving “Day of Giving” dinner for community residents who are patrons of local soup kitchens and other social service agencies. The meal was held in Hurley Hall on Eastern’s North Campus. The Day of Giving is an initiative started in 2007 by Jason Budahazy, a senior from Bridgeport majoring in sports management. The large-scale Thanksgiving meal was envisioned as a way to serve members of the Willimantic and Windham community who otherwise would not be able to have such a dinner. Integral to the Day of Giving is a canned food drive; this year, more than 20,000 cans were collected and donated to local charities, including the Covenant Soup Kitchen, the Access Agency and Catholic Charities.

Alumna Establishes Scholarship for Social Work Students

Barbara Candales ’74 has established the Arturo and Elba Candales Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Named in honor of her parents, the scholarship will help support Latino students who attend Eastern and major in social work. “During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Puerto Rican community in New London was in its infancy and both my parents became leaders,” said Candales. “Through their work in the formation of Nuestra Casa, the first Latino agency in New London to provide services to the emerging Latino community, I witnessed their volunteerism. I would attend meetings with them and also volunteered on various occasions to help get the organization off the ground. They were my role models who inspired me to select Applied Social Relations (Social Work was not available as a major at that time) and continue on with their work with the Latino community.”

Following her graduation from Eastern in 1974, Candales went on to earn master’s degrees in social work and public health and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Connecticut (UConn). She enjoyed a distinguished career in social work education as a teacher with UConn’s School of Social Work, as human service program coordinator for Tunxis Community College, and as a teacher and director of the Social Work Program at Central Connecticut State University. Her excellence in teaching was recognized by Central in 2005 with a teaching excellence award. In 2006 she was named “Social Worker of the Year” by the Connecticut Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers for her many contributions to the social work profession in Connecticut. Candales said her parents were “very grateful for the many opportunities and support provided at Eastern, including federal and state financial assistance so that I could obtain a college degree. The Arturo and Elba Candales Endowed Scholarship is their way of saying ‘thank you’ to Eastern. Along with my brothers, Robert Candales and Randal Candales, I have chosen to provide financial support to other Latino students in memory of our beloved parents. Cid Scholarship Fund will assist with educational expenses of Biology majors (with preference given to women and minorities) and help fund undergraduate student research and artistic student projects. Sandy Willoughby had 26 successful years of teaching at Pomfret Community School in Pomfret. She taught fifth grade for eight years and first grade for 18 years. Sandy has been retired since 2000 and lives in North Haverhill, NH, where she reads, gardens, kayaks and hikes. Carol Wolak, hired by the Windsor Police Department in 1977, retired after 31 years of service. She was the fourth woman hired as an officer in Windsor.

Retired Army Colonel Charles A. Campbell was presented with the Legion of Merit at a recent meeting of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce.The Legion of Merit is awarded by the U. S. Armed Forces for “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.” Col. Campbell is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and served as a safety and occupational health manager responsible for evaluating and inspecting Department of Energy nuclear facilities. He resides in Mitchellville, MD. Marie (Karpinsky) Baer has been a member of the U.S. Power Squadron since 1983. She worked on various committees with squadrons locally in Middletown and in San Diego, CA, rising to the rank of Commander of the San Diego Sail and Power Squadron, only the second woman to hold that position. She continues to work on educating the public that the Power Squadron includes both sail and power boats. Baer resides in San Diego.

Stanley Popiel (May 28, 1915-October 3, 2008) Stanley Popiel, humanitarian and founder of Mystic Color Lab, passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2008 at his home in Stonington, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Popiel and his wife, Ingrid Feddersen, expanded the ABC Film Co. into the national photofinishing company Mystic Color Lab, which employed more than 500 people at the time that it was sold in 1985. The Popiels, who sailed to Haiti every year for their winter vacation for more than two decades, are very special friends of the university. They donated a significant collection of Haitian art to Eastern in 2000, in addition to their ongoing and generous support of the Annual Fund. “We want to live the way we want to, and anything extra we want to give away,” Mr. Popiel once said. Longtime friends of Eastern Stanley Popiel and his wife, Ingrid Feddersen.

Lester Foster (October 28, 1918-May 20, 2008) Long-time community leader Lester Foster died on May 20, 2008. He and his brother, Robert, began their successful partnership in the mid-1960s, beginning with the construction of the Colonial Townhouse Apartments. Before selling the business in 2000, they earned a reputation for outstanding service to renters and for extensive redevelopment projects including the Sears Building at 670 Main Street and Willimantic’s first fourscreen theater. In December 2000 they generously donated the 670 Main Street property to the ECSU Foundation, Inc. The clock tower that stands as the gateway to the Eastern campus was built in 1998 and on April 27, 2001, it was officially named the Foster Clock Tower in honor of Lester and Robert Foster, community leaders and longtime Eastern supporters.

Please know in advance that every donation made to the future of Eastern is important and appreciated. I also want to remind our friends, our alumni in particular, that the percentage of alumni who give, not the size of their gifts, is an important rating factor in the national U.S. News and World Report rankings of American colleges and universities. Moving up those rankings is not only important to our current students, it also will enhance the academic credentials of prior students — you, our alumni!

These are trying times for universities across our country, with endowments severely impacted by unstable global financial markets. In such times, we are especially grateful for the generosity of Eastern donors, who realize that supporting our University is one of the best investments they can make in the future of our state. With a limit on the resources available to Eastern as a publicly supported institution, the private philanthropy of our alumni and friends is critical to our success, and we are truly grateful for this assistance. Whether it is ongoing support of our Annual Fund or establishing an endowed scholarship, the donors listed in this issue of EASTERN magazine are helping us achieve our goal as a University of First Choice. Their gifts go to supporting student scholarships, academic programs and other critical aspects of Eastern’s educational enterprise. With more than 50 percent of our students becoming the first members of their family to attend college, the philanthropy of our donors is a major force in achieving social and economic mobility for thousands of people. This year I have had the opportunity to visit with alumni in New York City; Springfield, MA; Norwalk, CT; and other locations. I have been impressed with their professional demeanor, self-assurance, and fondness for their alma mater. They are proof that Eastern is indeed a special place, where students discover their talents and climb to further heights with the assistance of faculty and staff.
