Hands-on
Eastern students benefit from experiential learning, global field courses, undergraduate research mentored by faculty, internships and co-ops, service learning, study abroad and many other opportunities!
Learning
Emily Hailu ‘22 (Communication) is a social media specialist at Mohegan Sun. “I had a lot of great experiences as a Communication major. I did two internships on campus in the field of video production and got a lot of hands-on experience in the TV studio, using the cameras and video switchboard… the kind of experi ence employers want to see on your resume.”
Fatima Godina ‘22 (Psychology major, Genetic Counseling minor) co-au thored a published article on dual language learners in preschool classrooms. “As a dual language learner myself, it was really interest ing to be part of this study. This experience really sparked an interest in the field of research. I love learn ing, and I think that’s one of the main things that you do as a researcher — you just never stop learning.”
Eugene Bertrand ‘24 (History and Elementary Education double-major) received a research grant from Eastern to develop a documentary about the migrant labor that drove Connecticut’s historic tobacco industry. “As someone with a Caribbean background, I think it’s vital to understand the impact that Caribbean people have made to Connecticut. Contributing to a documentary that focuses on some of the work my ancestors did is a way to thank them for all the hard work they’ve put in the past to ensure I had a better future.”
Eastern students conduct research on low-THC cannabis in our state-licensed green house as part of Connecticut’s first minor in Cannabis Cultivation and Chemistry.
Megan Piechowicz ‘23 (Biology major and Genetic Counseling minor) Megan interned at the Middlesex Health Cancer Center as a diges tive health screening analyst. She screened patients for hereditary cancer while collaborating with medical providers. “My main piece of advice to students would be to continue reaching out, as it is the primary way to find opportunities of this nature. You will never know what is available without asking.”
