WILLIAM STREET HISTORY FEATURE

William Street PADDINGTON
Who would believe that the history of William Street, Paddington, can be traced back to 1771, in docklands on the south bank of the River Thames in the suburb of Bermondsey in the former county of Surrey? It was here that James Underwood, shipbuilder, distiller and merchant, was born on September 4th to Thomas Underwood and his wife Mary. It was a tough area with rough justice and the punishment for stealing was transportation.
The London Hotel
James stole a pair of slippers and in 1790, in Maidstone, was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia. He arrived on the Admiral Barrington in October 1791 just weeks after his 20th birthday. He was to have another 54 birthdays before passing away back in the UK at his home Paddington House, Tulse Hill, Brixton. In the meantime, he had become father to nine children, established Sydney’s first private shipyard on the Tank Stream and accumulated an estate that took 3 Acts of Parliament to resolve. In addition, he opened a distillery near the foot of Elizabeth Street, built a family home on Glenmore Road and, in October 1839, subdivided 50 of his 97 acre estate for development under the name Paddington Estate, thereby naming a whole suburb after Paddington in London. In the process he gave names to the streets of Paddington, Windsor, Hargrave & Sutherland as well as Underwood, William & Elizabeth. All but the last two run EastWest parallel to what was then Old South Head Road (now Oxford Street). The last two run North-South, named after his last Wife, Elizabeth Sherwell and his youngest son, William Underwood. Underwood Street joins the two.
