Dave Sharma Liberal Party

Dave Sharma is former Australian ambassador to Israel. He won Liberal preselection for the blue ribbon seat after a marathon voting session that lasted more than six hours. The ABC reported there were audible gasps in the room when former Woollahra Deputy Mayor Katherine O'Regan was knocked out of the running. Mr Sharma, who lives outside the electorate, says that security, a strong economy and keeping communities together are his key national priorities. Unlike some other conservatives, he says he believes in man-made climate change and that, "as part of any energy plan, renewables will need to play a part.” Mr Sharma may face criticism from some progressive quarters over his support of US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Tim Murray Australian Labor Party

Tim Murray is the Australian Labor Party candidate. He is president of Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club, an investment analyst specialising in Australian mining and father of three young children. After winning an Australia-China Council scholarship, working for Austrade and developing businesses in China for 20 years, Tim and his wife Pauline Vaughan moved their family back to Sydney in 2013. “During their time in Asia, Tim and Pauline saw first-hand the impact that pollution can have on children’s health,” states Mr Murray’s official ALP profile. “Tim joined the Labor Party because, along with meeting the challenge of climate change, it is the only party committed to balanced locally-driven development, affordable housing, investment in public education and health, and an open, secure, innovative and forwardlooking Australia.”

Wentworth voters go to the polls on Saturday, October 20 following the resignation from the seat of former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Prof. Kerryn Phelps Independent

Professor Kerryn Phelps, AM is running as an Independent and is seen as a wildcard in the October 20 vote. A councillor with the City of Sydney and former Australian Medical Association president, she is a general practitioner at Double Bay’s Cooper Street Clinic and was a tireless same-sex marriage campaigner. Prof. Phelps says if elected to federal parliament, she will push for action on climate change and energy policy, with "a fast-tracking to renewables". She says she wants a stronger economy "but we must have a heart," calling for more humane treatment of asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru. Prof. Phelps says her track record as a doctor, health communicator and advocate gives her an appropriate skill set for Federal Parliament.

How to get HEALTHY, GLOWING SKIN in Spring

Spring has finally sprung – and that means you’ll be exposing more of your flesh to the world, as you switch to lighter, more revealing clothes. But what if the skin you bare is desiccatedlooking and corpse-like? Shedding your old skin

Your skin cells constantly regenerate, but with heavy winter clothing, the dead skin cells don’t always slough off as effectively. Take an evening to give yourself a deep, full-body exfoliation. Take a warm bath and give your entire body a good scrub with an exfoliating body wash or actual scrub. Use a gentle, circular motions to gently brush away dead skin cells. Do this about three times a week. Pay extra attention to your knees, elbows, hands and back. Last but not least, your feet. Your feet probably received less attention over winter, since they get stuffed in socks and boots. Exfoliate your feet, and use a pumice stone if you need to remove the calluses.

Switch to a Spring moisturiser

Winter calls for heavy, thick moisturisers to combat the effects of dry indoor air. But in the warmer months, you should spread to a lighter moisturiser to keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Apply a thin coat of moisturiser to just-out-of-the-shower damp skin. Then, reapply five minutes later.

Drink plenty of water

Moisturise your body from the inside and drink water, and lots of it! Water makes up two thirds of your body mass and all organs need hydration to function – including your skin. The more water you drink, the easier it will be to keep your skin from becoming dry and flakey. But just how much water should you drink? Experts advise eight average-sized glasses a day or around 1.6 litres for women and 2 litres for men.

Make sure you have enough Vitamins A and C

Vitamin A has been shown to help with scaly, dry skin. Sources of Vitamin A include eggs, milk, leafy vegetables and liver. Meanwhile, Vitamin C can stimulate collagen production. Citrus fruits are especially recommended for skin health.

Ditch hot showers

Even though hot showers and baths are soothing to the skin, they make your skin drier, stripping away the natural oils. Ideally, you should take lukewarm showers to improve blood flow, relax, and avoid damaging your skin.

WELLBEING 5

EASTERN SUBURBS

It is a reality of life that each of us will at some stage be a carer for another.

Who cares for the carer?

At a personal level for carers is the choice they make as to what extent they are involved in managing the care they give. ”Every action means that another opportunity is forgone, be it in lifestyle or economic reward. For some it is a selfless act. For others it may be an oppressive sacrifice. Guilt can play a big part, the carer constantly questioning whether they are doing enough? Emotional support is as important as material support.

For some, it is a temporary situation for others it is a lifelong challenge and commitment. It can be caring for an aged relative, someone with a disability or helping someone through a serious and sometimes terminal illness. These situations impact on all members of the family, their lifestyle, their resources, and their personal well-being.

The law sets out that those who provide care have a fiduciary responsibility to those whom they provide care. They must act in the best interests of the recipient of the care, and not have conflicts of interest with those actions they take on behalf of the recipient.

As a counsellor and social worker with decades of experience working in medical and rehabilitation hospitals, disability organisations, aged care services and private practice, I have worked closely with those providing care, and have seen the tremendous stress placed on them. The impacts of care situations can be economic, social, emotional, combative, stressful, lonely, frustrating and uplifting.

Of course, taking on such responsibilities can cause conflict with the desires of the recipient, relatives and other interested parties. Standing up for the rights of a person receiving care can be lonely and difficult. Dealing with these issues can be overwhelming and the processes exhaustive and complicated. It is where an experienced counsellor can provide guidance, information and advice. They can facilitate getting things done with manageable levels of stress and urgency. It is a matter of asking for that help. Asking is not a sign of weakness. You do not need to do this alone.

Carers often feel overwhelmed and isolated. They are both physically and emotionally tired most of the time. Carers sometimes feel trapped and think they have no choice. They can become resentful, especially towards other family members, who they believe are not pulling their weight. Caring is a truly personal experience which tests the boundaries of relationships and how people view themselves.

By Mary Doyle, Principal, Effective Counselling B.Soc.Sc., M. Counsel.

But, providing care is not just about families, it also involves processes. This is about institutions, organisations, corporations, hospitals, medical professionals, community groups, service providers, social support services, and other people who work within the professional and volunteer care industry. Forthe uninitiated navigating a path through all these considerations can be daunting.

With over 20 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse and driven by the Australian Government initiative to move 80% of aged care into the home by 2050, NurseWatch Founder and CEO, Kate Spurway, observed a need to provide an aged-care-at-home service that recognises the mindset of the newly ageing population and their families. “I saw the need to relieve emotional stress on family members who suddenly find themselves as primary caregivers and cannot afford, or do not want, to commit their loved ones into an institution”, stated Kate. “The NurseWatch aged care wellness approach places equal emphasis on care, wellness and social interaction. By merging premium medical care with wellness and enjoyable social experiences within the comfort of the home or community NurseWatch creates an ideal environment for the

well-being and health of our clients to flourish” Kate said. The NurseWatch system operates in small blocks of time and for extended periods so that care becomes more affordable than conventional services with the focus on quality over quantity. NurseWatch’s continuum of care model provides the opportunity for regular wellness sessions such as, yoga and massage provided by experienced Registered Nurses accessed via an intuitive online booking process that provides instant and unlimited access to quality care within the comfort of the home, around the clock. Nurses form close, ongoing relationships with clients, giving them the opportunity to monitor health and general well-being over the course of the relationship. NurseWatch aims to initiate the care process earlier on to not only enhance positive living experiences, but to prevent future health and mobility problems. NurseWatch was trialed in Sydney during late 2017 and the service is now available nationally. NurseWatch launches with an image campaign designed to give the aged care category a makeover. The campaign which targets women aged 45 to 55 who are the primary caregivers and decision makers for aged care features a portrait series of Australians aged in their mid to late 70s captured in a stylish and powerful way by fashion photographer Georges Antoni. Kate Spurway commented “The aged care industry has an image problem. In an already ageist society this is amplified through negative media stories and daggy presentation of older people in media. This has not kept up with the way aged people see themselves in 2018. We saw the opportunity to create a positive image campaign that is strong on contemporary, meaningful branding showing people of age who are attractive, vital and stylish”.

TOP KNOT IS TOPS FOR TIMBER FLOORING

“We install high volume solid and engineered flooring in massive volume throughout Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in the high rise residential and commercial market so when we are presented with a design for a floor with a point of difference we are very excited to see it through and put our company name to it. We are very proud of the finish.”

Top Knot Carpentry & Joinery puts down the best timber flooring in Australasia – and that’s official!

The flooring awards are the latest accolades for Top Knot, established by Irish expatriate Mr Daniels 14 years ago.

The eastern suburbs-based company has just won two prestigious awards at the annual gala awards dinner of the Australasian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA), peak body for the timber flooring industry throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Operating on a shoestring, Top Knot started with modest domestic and commercial jobs like home renovations and shop fitouts. The jobs got bigger. And bigger. And today Top Knot Carpentry & Joinery’s projects include Royal Randwick Racecourse, Circular Quay’s Opera Bar and The Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.

At the ceremony held on the Gold Coast, Top Knot took out the awards for Commercial/Industrial Solid Timber Floor of the Year and was also overall Floor of the Year winner.

Top Knot employs over 600 people and its operations span the east coast of Australia. It recently made a move into Western Australia.

The awards were given for Top Knot’s installation of stunning mixed hardwood and roasted peat flooring at in the reception area of the West Hotel in Sussex Street, Sydney.

The company has a combined 20,000 square metre factory space and office space in Botany. Here, design and manufacture of commercial and residential joijnery is carried out using the latest production technology.

Top Knot managing director Eoin Daniels thanked architects Woods Bagot and site builders Multiplex. “Woods Bagot did a flawless job on the design,” said Mr Daniels. “For us as a business we knew when we were presented with the design at tender stage that it was something special.

Getting the best price for your house in today’s market The experts at "A Style of Shade" have compiled some of their top tips for how to invest in your home to increase the chances of selling it for the best price in today’s market.

1

Stick to neutral colours. You want prospective buyers to be able to picture themselves in your home. Neutral doesn’t mean bland, it allows a back drop to paint your own personality on. Adding dramatic effects can make impact through dark neutrals and contrasts. Think about energy efficiency. Buyers are looking for homes that will be efficient and easy to run – think solar, hot water or low maintenance decks instead of extensive gardens. It is possible to save up to 49%* on heating costs by installing Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Menage Shades on your windows – creating a modern look that adds light control and privacy throughout the day and night, with the added bonus of unrivalled energy efficiency.

2

For an added bonus try including a motorisation option like the new Luxaflex PowerView™ motorisation system, it allows you to bring your home into the future of automation systems and stand out from the rest.

your home. Add extra 3 Declutter storage with floating shelves or shadow

boxes in living areas or important zones like the kitchen and laundry. Remove personal items to allow prospective buyers to imagine their own furniture in rooms or common areas.

4

Maximise the living space. Indoor/ outdoor space is very sought after these days so think about whether a folding arm awning or umbrella may suit your outdoor space. Maybe try the Luxaflex® Ventura Terrace awning, this is a great option for narrow yards that need a large coverage, with their unique cross-over arms, they allow for up to 4m of projection. During open homes, extend the awning(s) to show the liveable space that is created. It is this functionality for both summer and winter that makes vendors more comfortable that your home is the right home for Sydney’s often harsh climate. By Mark Treister, owner of A Style of Shade, Double Bay’s local Luxaflex Gallery Dealer * Savings are based on the installation of fully-recessed, revealmounted Luxaflex DUETTE® Architella Ménage 38mm Blockout Shades in an average home in Sydney, compared with the House Energy Rating standard of Holland Blinds from AccuRate, in that home. These calculations have been modelled by an independent third party. Savings will vary based on the window type and installation.

The reason is clear. In order to survive "Tucked Away" businesses have to provide great customer service and value for money, and that is exactly what buyers are looking for. In addition, they get businesses with personality, and friendly smiles from owner operators who really care.

Often the businesses support local charities, so the whole community benefits.

Paddington's SPIRITED PAST Take a stroll down Elizabeth Street Paddington and you’ll find it’s quite a long street, and downhill all the way. You’ll pass the Grand National Hotel, what used to be the Windsor Hotel and finally the Four in Hand Hotel.

Frederick Cooper noble trade of distilling, and in particular distilling Gin. Why else do you think Robert Cooper, who promised his wife “the finest house in all the colony”, called his magnificent home “Juniper Hall”. For the simple reason that Juniper berries are one of the principle ingredients required for distilling gin.

Are you beginning to get the picture? It seems like there is almost a Public House on every corner. Well, it’s true there was “almost a Pub on every corner” of old Paddington, for the simple reason that between 1860 and 1890 almost 3,800 terrace houses were built in Paddington, modelled on similar houses built in London.

Cooper & Underwood's distillery

It’s rumoured the plans were drawn in London and it’s fact that the roofing came by ship from the slate mines of Wales in the UK. Coincidentally, such housing in the UK also had a public house on every corner. For the simple reason that when you have 14 people in a home with two bedrooms you can’t socialise and entertain in the back garden.

However, the partnership split up leaving James Underwood to set up the distillery in 1824. Built of stone it was three stories high and stood near the bottom the hill where Elizabeth Street now ends. Rumour has it that Elizabeth Street was named after his third wife Elizabeth Sherwell, who bore him a son William.

What you need is a “Public House”, one the whole community can use, one like the Paddington Inn. First built in 1859 it was Paddington’s first pub and the place where Paddington Council held its first meeting.

That Elizabeth Street, and William Street run parallel and that both cross Underwood Street and have pubs on each corner, seems to suggest the rumour is true. The distillery is also remembered in the recently opened Juniper Café & Bar at Paddington’s Five Ways.

However, before the 3,800 houses, and the pub on every corner, Paddington was home to the

OUR MELBOURNE CUP runneth over ... A cheat sheet for the occasional punter

The arrival of spring brings a blizzard of benefits including warmer weather, greener trees, later sunsets and, of course, that wonderful event that takes place on the first Tuesday of November, the Melbourne Cup. This year it takes place on Tuesday 7th November, and that dear readers, is the first piece of essential trivia in our Melbourne Cup occasional punters cheat sheet. Righty tagged "The Race that Stops a Nation" the Melbourne Cup is Australia's most prestigious annual thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds and over, and is conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

The first female rider to win was Michelle Payne, in 2015 when she steered the Darren Weir-trained "Prince of Penzance" to a famous victory.

The unluckiest of all Melbourne Cup runners was "Shadow King" who ran in six Cups between 1929 and 1935, finishing third to "Phar Lap" in 1930, second to "White Nose" in 1931, third to "Peter Pan" in 1932 and second again behind "Hall Mark" in 1933. There have been no dead-heats for first place in the race, but "Topical" and "Gaine Carrington" dead-heated for third in Hall Mark's 1933 Cup, and "Lahar" and "Zazabelle" dead-heated for third in the 1999 Cup, won by "Rogan Josh."

LOGBOOKS & SERVICE

help increase the value of your car

Edgecliff Automotive

Regular servicing of your car has so many benefits, says Joshua from Edgecliff Automotive.

These include: • Fuel economy which is good for the environment • Wear and tear is noticed, recorded and tracked • You feel secure knowing unexpected breakdowns are unlikely - It’s not great to breakdown on a freeway, or in the rain, or when you phone battery is flat, or kilometres from home • Our scanning tools find hidden issues before they become a problem and help fix them in advance ready for your next rego. • Essential items like Filters, Brake Fluid, Tyres, Transmission and ECU Error Codes are checked • Our technicians get to know your car and can give you peace of mind and professional advice • Finally your hard copy log book is updated and that can save you money.

Logbooks

Research in the UK suggests that a car without a service history is worth between 23 & 26% less than the same car with a full-service history. Edgecliff Automotive will provide you with a log book that suits your car (Mercedes log book for your Mercedes, VW log book for your VW and so on) and keep it up to date. They record every service they do and store your log book in your car so it is accessible when it

is needed. For our technicians it is an essential clue to your car’s care and in the future when you want to sell it, you will benefit financially for having the exact details for the work done. The log book is the visible, accessible evidence that you have paid attention to your car and adds dollars to the value to your asset.

Thinking of buying a secondhand car?

Have the vehicle’s well-being and the level of care checked by Josh’s expert technicians. They will check the log book, look at essential parts of the car and let you know the current status and any repairs that may be imminent. You’ll have to book it in though, please don’t drive it in for instant attention.

Getting a fair price for your car

ESL: It seems you have a passion for cars, how did that start?

ESL: People can also list their car on

sites like Gum Tree and Carsales do you have any advice for them?

DB: It was easy really, my Father ran the family business so I grew up in the motor vehicle wholesale trade. I enjoyed the work and my hobby of motor car rallying and, over a period of more than 40 years, made lots of friends and regular customers.

DB: It’s certainly an option for people, but if they don’t know the industry they run the risk of pricing their car too low, or of not making it look its best before listing it. ESL: If you see a really good car

ESL: So you were able to mix work

would you buy it yourself?

and pleasure?

DB: Most certainly. I’m happy to give them a price, and the reasons for it, and also give them time to shop around to make sure they feel it’s fair. If they decide to sell to me I can settle by Cash or Direct Bank Transfer, and make the sale as trouble free as possible.

DB: Absolutely. My hobby meant I learned a lot about cars and that made it easier for me to help my customers. I guess we were all winners.

ESL: You mention Motor Vehicle Rallying. Do you have any special memories?

DB: The London to Sydney Motor Rally must be one of the highlights. We drove a 25 year old car over 30,000 kilometres in the harshest of conditions and learned a lot about ourselves and what a well engineered car can cope with. I also rallied in PNG driving for the PNG Industries Mazda importer. ESL: So you think a car’s not past it,

just because it’s 25 years old?

DB: Not at all. If a car is well engineered and has been well looked after it can have many years of useful life ahead of it. A dealer may say it has no value, but a 10 year old car with 100,000 kilometres on the clock is only middle aged. If it’s well engineered it will still run happily for another 100,000 kilometres and that’s another 10 years. ESL: You talk about “Well engi-

neered”. Can you expand on that a bit?

ESL: That sounds very fair. Is there anything you would like to add?

DB: Certainly. In my mind “well engineered” doesn’t just mean it performs well, but that it is reliable, easy (and inexpensive) to service and that spare parts are readily available and don’t cost an arm and a leg. ESL: Are there any models that you think particularly fit the bill?

DB: Lots of cars fit the bill, but the Toyota Corolla is a good example. There are currently over 2,800,000 Toyotas registered in Australia, so spare parts are readily available and lots of people know how to service them. This means maintaining them costs less, and that means they fetch a better price when resold, particularly when resold privately and not just traded in.

ESL: Since retiring I know you’ve

become involved in buying and selling cars. Do you have any tips for someone selling their car? DB: My biggest tip would be not to underestimate what your car is worth. It may not be worth much to a trader, but in the open market it can have a totally different value.

ESL: If someone was thinking of selling a car like the Toyota, or Mazda you mentioned above would you be happy to give them an idea of how much they could expect to get? DB: Yes. I can give them an idea over the phone, or I can pop out to visit them and give an, obligation free, opinion.

DB: I’ve been around a while and have always been happy to share my knowledge and answer people’s questions. Part of the fun of rallying was meeting new people and working together. Now I’m retired I like to help people get a fair price for their car. It’s a great way to stay involved, meet new people, and keep in touch with the car industry.

ESL: Many thanks Doug. If someone is looking to sell their car how can they contact you?

DB: Just to call me on 0401 151 511. I can give them a no obligation opinion over the phone, or if we both think it’s worthwhile I can pop out to see them anywhere in Sydney.

Your Friendly Funeral Guy Chris Cullen

Do you have a question for the Friendly Funeral Guy?

T

Have you heard stories in the media about funeral directors taking advantage of people? Sadly, it is becoming more common. At a time when someone they love has passed away, families are incredibly vulnerable. Yet they place an enormous amount of trust in their funeral director to care for the person they love. The betrayal of that trust by unscrupulous people is inexcusable. So how can you avoid being placed in such a situation? Here are 5 tips to protect yourself. 1. Phone 2 or 3 funeral directors to request itemised quotes on email. Items which will effect the cost include: • Burial or cremation? • For burial - what cemetery and do you already own a grave? • Weekday or weekend funeral? • Single service or dual service (ie. place of worship first followed by crematorium/ graveside)

website of the association to make sure they are listed. 5. Check what is included in the professional fee (sometimes called service fee). The following fees are sometimes not included and should be checked: • After hours transfer fees • Mortuary fees • Hearse fee • Fee for meeting in your home instead of funeral director’s office • Cost of memorial book • Charge for collection of ashes and deliver to family

OCSOBER 10th year Celebrating it’s 10th year, Life Education’s annual fundraising initiative, Ocsober, kicks off to encourage adults to ‘lose the booze’ in the month of October to help Australian Children.

The Nappy Collective will launch its 12th nappy drive, a two-week campaign (October 12-26), that calls on babies and parents across Australia to donate leftover, unused, disposable nappies to vulnerable families. A newborn goes through ten to twelve nappies a day, and a toddler six to eight. When families are stretched to even put food on the table, they simply can’t change their child’s nappy this often, which can cause health issues for their child and themselves. The Nappy Collective is the only organisation in Australia focused exclusively on helping families with their nappy needs (a product outside most government funding regulations) which was founded in 2013, by Sandra Jacobs. Sandra, who is now CEO of the Bennelong Foundation, found herself asking, “What should we do with all the nappies our babies have grown out of?” Sandra discovered she wasn’t alone, with a group of mothers in her network sharing the same concern. Rather than passing them onto a friend, keeping them for the next child or throwing them away, the group started collecting and donating nappies to women in crisis. To date, The Nappy Collective has collected almost 2.5 million nappies, which have been redistributed to 200 beneficiary organisations across Australia, including Sydney and surrounding areas. The monetary value of these donated nappies is more than $1.1 million. The Nappy Collective mobilises communities to help vulnerable families in their local communities It also helps reduce waste, by passing on nappies that might otherwise go to landfill. The Nappy Collective CEO, Lani Masuku, says, “It’s wonderful that, in five years, we’ve been able to redistribute this huge number of nappies, which have all been generously donated by Australians committed to making positive change. The power of collective giving is so apparent in the support that Australia continue to gives to vulnerable families.”

The October Collective will span 66 cities and towns across Australia, with more than 450 drop points where families can donate their nappies. “We’re inviting parents and families to join us in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community,” says Ms Masuku. “Nappies are in critical demand at the beneficiary organisations we supply, and providing this vital aid removes a financial and logistical barrier. Mothers in crisis situations struggle to provide even the most basic essentials for their young children and many may have to choose between clean nappies and other basic needs, adding even more stress to their situation”. “Being able to meet this basic necessity for their child also improves the mental wellbeing of parents facing challenging times. A handful of nappies may not mean much to you or me, but they make a huge impact on a mum in crisis and, importantly, show her the community truly cares.”

This year Ocsober Ambassadors, including Eastern Suburbs locals, Tegan Martin, Zoe Bingley-Pullin, and Casey Burgess, will join forces to raise money to fund Life Education’s programs, empowering kids to around the nation to make safe and healthy life choices. This year, Ocsober aims to reach the fundraising target of $500,000 to fund Life Educations programs that are taught in more than 4,000 schools nationally. With over 7 million Australians having gone through one of their programs, fronted by its iconic mascot Healthy Harold, Life Education is the largest independent provider of health and drug education for Australian school children.

“Ocsober is a powerful fundraising initiative that allows us to continue to deliver health, drug and alcohol education programs to schools throughout Australia, while raising awareness of important issues facing young Australians.

Our research has shown that parents remain concerned about a number of issues, including alcohol consumption, which continue to form the foundation of our programs and highlight the importance of increased funding for these initiatives”, said CEO of Life Education NSW and Eastern Suburbs local, Kellie Sloane. Challenging Australian adults to cut out alcohol for one month during October with their family and friends, Ocsober allows participants to give back to the community, raise money for a good cause and generate exposure about the negative alcohol culture in Australia and the important issues facing young Australians today.

Rose Bay Community Garden is built on sustainable organic principles that are in harmony with the nature of the local area. The garden provides a place to learn and share knowledge of organic gardening methods, waste reduction, water and solar harvesting and sustainable living.

The hive has been doing so well and growing rapidly over this early Spring, that the team of beekeepers looking after them in the garden wanted to set up another hive. A local resident and well known artist, Kathleen Peterson, was asked to paint the hive with a beautiful decorative motif of bees visiting blossoms against a blue sky. Visitors are welcome to come see the Rose Bay Community Garden and the bees. There is also a native bee hive, chickens, worm farms, a full composting system and many unsual and heirloom herbs and plants to learn about and try.

Last September, the first hive was set up and the team was able to harvest over sixteen litres of honey in their first season using the new and innovative Flow Hive. With two hives operating at full capacity, the team expects to Rose Bay Community harvest up to 50 kilos of local Rose Bay honey Garden this year. Manion Ave, Rose Bay

WAVERLEY

Mayor cops a caning over beach survey controversy

Waverley mayor John Wakefield and a fellowcouncillor have landed in hot water over a survey about beach safety which led people to believe surfing would be banned at Bondi.

The council’s Lifeguard Risk Review Survey floated the idea of finned surfboards being outlawed on all parts of the beach except the notoriously unsafe southern end. Reaction from the community was less than positive. “It’s an absolute joke!” screamed a headline in the Sydney Morning Herald. Lifeguards surf instructors warned a ban on all surfers at North Bondi would make the southern end of the popular Sydney beach cramped and more dangerous. Two days after the survey was released, it was hurriedly withdrawn, with the council issuing a press release saying it was clear that some people have interpreted the initial survey information as a proposal by the Council to ban surfing at Bondi Beach. Council officers apologised for giving the impression there was a proposal to relegate surf craft to the dangerous southern end of the beach. This end is notorious for a rip known as the “Bondi Express.” And Mayor Wakefield, who criticised lifeguards in a mayoral minute which prompted the survey, is being forced to make an even bigger mea culpa, along with fellow-councillor Marjorie O’Neill, who was involved in the distribution of the offending survey. Councillors have moved that Councillors Wakefield and O’Neill apologise to the North Bondi Surf Club, Bondi Surf Club, Bondi Longboards Club, Bondi Girl Surfriders, Icebergs, the Bondi Amateur Swimming Club and Surf Life Saving Australia plus all regular beach users for the “unfortunate July 2018 survey (in response to a Mayoral minute) implying that changes could take place on the beach whereby all users, including children, of any surf craft could be forced to use the unsafe southern end of the beach.” In addition, Councillors moved that the pair apologise to the council’s own lifeguards “for stating that they do an unsatisfactory job.” But wait, there’s more! The meeting moved that Councillor O’Neill be “encouraged to stand down as Chair of the Surf Club Committee for failing to consult with the members of the Committee prior to the release of the survey.” The survey was commissioned by the Executive Manager Safe Waverley and then put together by a risk consultant, Paul Chivers. “It appears there was an insufficiently robust process for checking and signing off on the survey questionaire before it was issued,” said the council’s Acting General Manager, Peter Monks. Meanwhile, the council posted on its website that it had revised the information in its Lifeguard Risk Review Survey following “significant community concerns about some of the information.“

RANDWICK

Randwick comes out with guns blazing over cruise plan

Randwick Council is opposing government plans to investigate Yarra Bay and Molineaux Point as possible locations for a new terminal for ‘mega’ cruise ships, with outgoing Mayor Lindsay Shurey launching a broadside at the proposal. “Our community has made it clear to us that they do not want this terminal built in Port Botany,” said Mayor Shurey. “It’s vital that we protect the beaches, green spaces and open areas at Yarra Bay so that they remain available to our community. “The introduction of a cruise ship terminal places these assets at serious risk of degradation and would introduce further issues of traffic congestion, environmental destruction and land-use pressures. We need to stand firm to protect this area and its significant local heritage.” Council is calling for the State Government to release all documents related to the proposal in order to ensure the community is fully informed. Currently, the only information to be released about the suitability of the two sites is two paragraphs in a 28-page document called Cruise Development Plan. “The State Government needs to be more open with their plans and what they may entail. Currently it’s not clear where the wharves would be built, the infrastructure required or how transport and logistics would connect. This is information that needs to be known and debated in the public sphere. “We encourage the NSW Government to keep the community informed, to fully engage with them throughout the process and listen to their concerns.” Council will take steps to place both Yarra Bay and Molineux Point on the state’s heritage list in a bid to halt developments in those areas. “We will be engaging with the State Government to encourage them to seek alternative locations for a terminal as we firmly believe that neither Yarra Bay nor Molineaux Point are appropriate or fit for purpose.” Randwick Council’s opposition to the cruise terminal plan is shared by local Labor MPs Michael Daley (Maroubra), Ron Hoenig (Heffron) and Matt Thistlethwaite (Kingsford Smith). The three spoke at a packed community rally against the plan at Yarra Bay Sailing Club. The Yarra Bay meeting also heard from members of the local indigenous community, who are calling the cruise proposal ‘The Second Invasion.’ La Perouse Aboriginal Land Council said the development would have a disastrous impact on the indigenous population’s spiritual connection to the area. To join the fight against the mega ship terminal, join the Save the Bay Coalition on Facebook.

New laws to protect domestic violence victims

Domestic violence victims will get greater protection with longer Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs) and new strangulation laws resulting in five years imprisonment. ADVOs will increase from 12 months to two years, will remain in place for two years after a domestic violence offender is released from prison, and in the most severe cases an ADVO will be indefinite. Police will now have the power to immediately vary ADVOs to respond to serious and immediate risks to victims.Domestic violence must never be tolerated in our community.

More money for homeless crisis accommodation Recently, I was joined by Social Housing Minister Pru Goward to open a new homeless crisis facility in Randwick run by Jewish House, which has partnered with the NSW government to provide local solutions to homelessness in the Eastern Suburbs.

This temporary accommodation model provides a wide range of wrap-around support services, essential to help people transition back into long-term housing and break the cycle of homelessness. I'm proud of my record of delivering better services to those most in need and I thank Rabbi Mendel Kastel and his caring team at Jewish House for partnering with the NSW government on this excellent initiative.

More preschool places for children in NSW New preschool places will be delivered across NSW thanks to a $6 million grant to improve preschool infrastructure. The grants will allow preschool services to build, extend or renovate facilities to increase preschool places where there is evidence of high need and growing demand. Applications are currently open for Capital Works Grants here: https://education. nsw.gov.au/early-childhood-education/ operating-an-early-childhood-educationservice/grants-and-funded-programs/ capital-works-grants The NSW Government has reduced preschool fees, is improving the quality of services, and is meeting the demand for future enrolment growth through ongoing investment in infrastructure. Earlier this year, the Liberals & Nationals announced nearly $200 million to extend community preschool subsidies to all three year olds in NSW – the first jurisdiction in Australia to do so.
