The daylight saving conundrum

On the grapevine

elcome to winter. We know W of course, that winter doesn’t start officially until Saturday June 1, but In reality changing the clocks has a much bigger impact on most people. Even leading some to say that Sydney only has two seasons, winter & summer. For most city slickers the big perk is that they get to “Lie In” for an extra hour, but the price is high, One hour less of every minute of evening sunlight for 146 consecutive days (That’s 4 months and 24 days). If you don’t believe me you can work it out on PlanetCalc. com (A website with 627 calculators including Compound Interest, Your Exact Age, Your Height in old Russian Measure, Random Latin Quotes and much much more.) big question, of course, is why do we The even have daylight saving? Well, the idea was first introduced by Benjamin Franklin* in his essay "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light," which was published in the Journal de Paris in April, 1784. You can’t argue with that given today’s electricity prices. Other benefits cited are more exercise for kids (more daylight hours after school), a decline in motor vehicle accidents (from 1968 – 1971 the UK kept daylight saving all

year round and road deaths declined by 11% as there was more light for people returning home), home burglaries are also reported to decline and of course everyone loves the long summer evenings, so they are happier, healthier and generally more congenial. So why don’t we just rename Daylight Saving “Standard Time” and then leave it alone? Probably because farming communities dislike it (they already use every daylight hour they can get irrespective of what the clock says). But maybe give it a try anyway. Some of the serious disadvantages of the present system are that it takes 5 to 7 days for our bodies to readjust each time a change is made. Road accidents and workday sickness, and even heart attacks increase on the Mondays following a change, and people doing international business are for ever juggling changing times. The above aside, we welcome you to the “Late Autumn” edition of Eastern Suburbs Life and hope you enjoy whiling away the long Autumn nights with entertaining and informative articles by our sponsors and contributors. * In the southern hemisphere we may prefer to credit British New Zealander George Hudson, for suggesting two hours of daylight saving in 1895, allegedly to collect

EVEN THE QUEEN HAS EAR WAX

Words have power

Pardon

?

Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance produced in the ears of many mammals, including humans. Despite popular belief about its uncleanliness, ear wax helps keep our ears clean by collecting dust, debris and dead skin, and protects the ear canal from infection. Ear wax migrates the debris out of the ear. This self-cleaning mechanism can get disrupted, and ear wax becomes trapped in the ear canal. This can happen for a number of reasons including the anatomy of your ear (some people have a rather sharp bend in their ear canal). Or, it can be due to the introduction of foreign bodies such as cotton buds, which causes ear wax to become impacted deep in the ear canal. Because the ear keeps producing wax, the blockage slowly gets bigger, staying in the ear

for years or decades. Impacted wax can have a number of side effects including pain, general irritation, and sometimes infection.

Words have power. They can encourage, deflate, praise, shame, approve, blame, honour or humiliate us.

What you should never do is stick anything in your ear to clean it. At best, you will push part of the wax deeper into the ear, making it more difficult to remove. At worst, you will puncture your ear drum, resulting in a significant amount of pain, hearing loss, and a swathe of specialist appointments.

We definitely feel the effect the words of others have on us and most of us are aware of the effect our words can have on others. What most of us underestimate are the effects our own words have on ourselves. The power of that inner voice within us.

Sadly, most people neither believe nor heed warnings from health professionals regarding the use of cotton buds. And most hospitals will see approximately 150 cases of eardrum perforations every year because of this.

We all have an inner voice that talks to us. It constantly givies us a running commentary, whether we like it or not, on our actions. Over a period of time, it influences all our behaviours, for it is the voice we listen to the most and the voice we believe. Given its power we should stop and analyse what it is saying. Is it overly critical? Does it frequently blame us? Does it put doubts in our heads? Does it overinflate our ego? Does it play the unedited running tapes of our parents? Or does it encourage, nurture and empower us?

Clearly, the adage that you shouldn’t put anything in your ear that’s smaller than your elbow is still true today. If you suspect you have ear wax and would like it removed, then phone Edgecliff Hearing for an appointment 9327 8280.

A quick test to discover if you are a selfcritic is to ask yourself “What do I usually say to myself when I make a mistake?” If you call yourself stupid or careless or generalize “You always stuff things up” or blame “It’s my fault I should have…” you are probably a self-critic. Don’t get me wrong, self-criticism is essential if we are to learn from our mistakes and improve our behaviours. It is when self-criticism begins to harm our self-esteem, our confidence and prohibits us from action that it becomes destructive. Criticism has been shown to be one of the most powerful influences on our behaviour. In a relationship it takes, on average, five positive comments to outweigh the effects of just one negative criticism. How many positive self-comments must it take to outweigh our negative remarks? A negative inner-voice can lead to anxiety, depression, addictions and chronic procrastination. Constant and severe self-criticism can seriously affect a person’s mental health. An overly positive inner voice can lead to vanity, arrogance, a sense of entitlement and grandiose or risky behaviour.

SO HOW DO YOU CHANGE YOUR SELF-TALK?

1. Listen carefully to yourself Kate, a woman in her mid-30’s came to see me. She said that she felt ‘stuck in her life.’ No matter what she did or how

hard she tried, nothing ever worked out for her. I asked Kate to take notice and record her self-talk. It became apparent that she constantly belittled herself, ‘I’m hopeless at making decisions, “I can’t believe I did that!”. She also had a very negative view of her relationship with fate. Her voice was full of phases such as “I’m just an unlucky person”, “someone up there doesn’t like me.” Much of this thinking came from her parents. She was repeating their voices, from their experiences without even realizing. Once Kate became more aware of her thinking, she was able to use strategies that would help her to change her self -talk so that it helped rather than hindered her. 2. Have realistic standards Many people with a negative inner voice have unrealistic or perfectionistic standards. Thus, they have a high chance of feeling a failure. “My best is never good enough.” “Doesn’t matter what I chose it will probably be wrong.” 3. Don’t catastrophize Very few things we say or do can’t be corrected. Very few things we greatly fear ever happen and if they do the results are rarely disastrous. 4. Don’t over-generalize Watch out for words like no one, everyone, always, never. “Something always goes wrong”, “People can’t be trusted.” 5. Correct yourself As you record and become aware of your overly critical remarks, correct yourself. Challenge your erroneous thinking. Say the opposite to yourself “I often get things right,” “Many people like me.” 6. Be kind to yourself If you think it would be hurtful, abusive or damaging to say these remarks to someone else then don’t say them to yourself. “I’m useless,” ”What’s wrong with me.” If your inner voice is still very destructive after trying these strategies, seek the assistance of a professional counsellor. “The thought manifests the word; The word manifests the deed; The deed develops into habit; And habit hardens into character; So watch the thought and its ways with care, And let them spring forth from love Born out of compassion for all beings. As the shadow follows the body, as we think, so we become.”

'To sleep – perchance to dream…’ Shakespeare’s Hamlet sums up the lament of countless people in the present day who suffer from insomnia. In my practice I often see patients who are sleep-deprived and suffering consequences such as stress and low immunity. Usually there are other factors at work like mental health issues and poor nutrition, and the insomnia is one of a number of symptoms. The typical pattern is someone who lies in bed and can’t fall asleep for several hours. However, another common pattern of insomnia is someone who goes to bed at ten or eleven o’clock, then enjoys a good night’s sleep until three, four or five in the morning. If you are waking at five, it might not be worth trying to get back to sleep. But if it’s at three, I tell people to try getting up for 15 minutes, then going back to bed and practicing some mindfulness, focusing on the present and not getting caught up in your thoughts.

Getting a good night’s sleep the natural way

There is a whole pharmacopoeia devoted to helping you sleep. I strongly caution patients against use of tranquilisers and barbiturates. Instead, I usually recommend natural solutions, taking a holistic approach with improvements in diet, fitness regime, etc.

If your Melatonin is low, your doctor may prescribe Melatonin. And various supplements like Magnesium can also help you get a good night’s sleep. You can get different combinations which also contain calming herbs.

Inositol has been called ‘Nature’s sleeping pill.’ It is a little-known member of the Vitamin B family that calms the racing mind. People can take it before going to bed and some people also take it during the day.

Passionflower is the name for an entire genus of plants, some species of which have been used for many years in Europe to treat anxiety, agitation and, yes, you guessed it, insomnia! Zizyphus is a seed that has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to improve sleep quality and enhance mental relaxation.

Sleep and devices

Try using one of the mindfulness apps like Smiling Minds or CBT based insomnia programs such as SHUTi. Talking of apps, devices they can frequently be one of the causes of your lack of sleep. The blue light from screens decreases our production of Melatonin, the hormone that governs the sleep-wake cycle by controlling your circadian rhythms. To counter the reduction in your Melatonin levels, you can use the Night Shift setting on your phone – it gives the screen an orangey-yellow glow – but it’s best to stop or at least minimise your use of devices after dinner.

LITTLE BAY’S little TASTE OF ITALY

Taking the Italian name of its charming location of Little Bay, it’s not surprising that Piccola Baia’s menu is inspired by that tradition’s focus on fresh authentic dishes.

RECIPE

Gertrude’s Giant Blueberry & Glaced Cherry Mother’s Day Cake INGREDIENTS Sponge cake:

1 cup self-raising flour, 1 cup caster sugar, ¾ cup melted butter, ½ cup milk, 4 eggs, 1 tbsp vanilla essence

Filling & decoration:

Blueberry jam, cherry jam, 2 cups freshly picked blueberries, 1 cup red glaced cherries, 1 cup crème fraiche, sweet cherry liquor, icing sugar for dusting, a cake-stand and a 1 metre purple satin ribbon

In a bowl, gently fold the crème fraiche with a splash of sweet cherry liquor, and serve with the delicious cake!

Serves 8

NOTE: Gertrude stresses it is important to NOT accidentally bake the satin ribbon with the cake in the oven!!

With a long history of working in prestigious Italian restaurants, manager Giuliano and head chef Stefano showcase their love of food, ensuring patrons enjoy Italian meal favourites. Further ensuring real flavours, an Italian nonna prepares the fresh pasta – including Pappardelle Al Ragu Di Manzo (her home-made pappardelle pasta with beef ragu Tuscany style} and Fettucine Ai Frutti Di Mare (home-made fettuccine with fresh seafood) – not surprisingly, these are some of Piccola Baia’s most popular dishes, as well as the gnocchi and lasagne. Also a best seller is the steak – sirloin with porcini mushroom and roast potatoes. Open till 9pm, six days a week, an increasing numbers of young families to

Method:

the area are also attracted by children’s portions and the genuine wood-fired pizza, as well as the weekly specials which attract interest from regulars. As well as a restaurant, Piccola Baia is also a café which means its freshly made cakes and Toby's Estate coffee are also in demand. Opening at 7am makes it also a hotspot for breakfast. Contemporary tastes are catered to, with its Green Breakfast Bowl a big drawcard; comprising kale, spinach, mushrooms, avocado with a poached egg accompanied by freshly baked bread from the local bakery, makes it a healthy and delicious option that’s in hot demand daily. How did Giuliano discover this delightful area? “A funny story,” he relates. “A friend of mine told me about a beautiful beach in Little Bay. Though I’d lived in Sydney for many years I didn’t know it. So I went to see the beach and fell in love. And I looked for a business and this one was for sale on Gumtree.” And what does he like best about the restaurant business? “People. I like meeting people and talking with them.”

Gertrude first advises to pre-heat the oven to 180C, or 160C fan/gas oven, grease and breadcrumb surfaces of two 20cm cake-tins, and melt butter in microwave. In a deep mixing-bowl beat the eggs with mixer until thickened, then on medium low speed slowly add vanilla essence, milk, melted butter, caster sugar and SR flour. Pour mix equally in the two cake-tins, and bake for 40 minutes, test with a skewer in middle to see if cooked. If necessary, bake additional time with 10 minute intervals till cooked. Remove sponge-cakes from oven, and gently tip them out on baking paper to cool off. Transfer to fridge to cool further. Place one sponge on cake on the cake-stand you have selected. Spread a thick layer of cherry jam on top, and add red glaced cherries on top of jam. Slice the second sponge into two layers, and place one layer over the cherries. On top, spread blueberry jam, and add layer of blueberries. Place remaining sponge layer on top, and add the remaining blueberries for decoration. Lightly sprinkle cherry liquor over top of cake, and lightly dust over cake white icing through a sifter. Tie the purple satin ribbon around the bottom sponge into a bow.

Marie Widolf is a cartoonist from the Eastern suburbs. In 2015, she launched her cartoon character Gertrude: a gal with plenty of enthusiasm for cooking, yet prone to daydreaming and procrastination. As Marie’s alter-ego, Gertrude invites us into a world of mayhem: where her plucked and oven-ready roast chickens roam and cause chaos, where her cooking ingredients escape from her mixing-bowl, and where she has to duck in recurring fried-egg rains! With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Gertrude has tied her apron-strings firmly, and has baked a special cake for all our mothers. Gertrude’s Giant Blueberry & Glaced Cherry Mother’s Day Cake, is served complete with a sweet cherry-liquor-infused crème fraiche, and is decorated with a pretty purple satin ribbon. Gertrude suggests it's best served as a large helping, and with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee. Enjoy!

HAIR BY YOLANDA MORE THAN CUT AND COLOUR

Yolanda Austin is a London-trained hair stylist and colour expert with a small salon tucked away in Double Bay’s Elbon Arcade.

She has been there since 2013, and before that she was with a larger salon in Woollahra for 11 years. The salon, Hair by Yolanda, is a boutiquestyle, one-woman business. Most of her clients have been coming to her for years. "I have seen them marry and have children. Now they’re telling their daughters, if you’re going to get your hair coloured for the first time, go to Yolanda!" It is not just Yolanda’s cutting and colouring skills that draw clients to her salon. You see, Yolanda is more than just a hairdresser to them. She is a trusted friend. "When you’re a hairdresser you’re also a counsellor and sounding board,’ Yolanda says. “I try not to give advice, but sometimes it’s impossible not to. But what is said in the salon, stays in the salon!" The salon has two styling chairs plus a reclining chair for shampoos. The shampoo chair also gives you a back massage. "Because of the salon’s small size, there are never more than two clients in at the one time," says Yolanda, who studied hairdressing at the London College of Fashion, and worked in Knightsbridge.

Superior quality hair products

Yolanda sources the best quality hair products from manufacturers such as Alfaparf Milano. She only uses products that are free of harmful chemicals and will keep your hair in good condition. "For example, the Alfaparf Milano shampoo is sodium, laurel and sulphate free and the colours are ammonia-free. Even though we’re using strong chemicals, we do our best to protect the hair."

One-on-one hairdressing experience

Yolanda describes herself as a skilled all-round hairdresser, with particular skills in the colour department. She sums up her point of difference as giving the client "a one-on-one hairdressing experience." "You’ll never be thrust over to the junior for the end of colour blow dry. You’ve got me from beginning to end."

BOOST FOR PENSIONER INCOMES Attention pensioners – want to boost income by tapping into your home equity? Ask your financial adviser about borrowing from the federal government under the Pension Loans Scheme (PLS).

The PLS is effectively a Government-run reverse mortgage scheme. It has been around for a while but changes introduced in last year’s federal budget, and coming into force this July, will make it much easier to qualify for the scheme. It was previously limited to individuals of pension age who qualified for a pension under either the income or assets test, but were not disqualified under both tests. “Eligibility will now extend to all Australians of Age pension age, including those currently receiving the maximum rate Age pension,” says Brendan Whitehouse, director of retirement planning specialist BRW Financial Group. Under the changes, the Government has increased the maximum allowable combined pension and PLS income stream to 150% of the Age Pension rate per annum. This currently corresponds to a maximum $35,735.70 per annum for single individuals and $53,874.60 for couples - with individual amounts dependent to what degree applicants are in receipt of a full or partial pension, or otherwise. “The revamped scheme provides more flexibility for individuals who are asset rich and income constrained to improve their everyday living standards,” Brendan says.

According to Brendan, the PLS offers a number of advantages including an attractive interest rate of 5.25 per cent. This is about one percentage point less than most reverse mortgages offered by the private sector. Another advantage is the fees. With private providers there is an establishment fee of about $1000 and monthly account fees. There are no fees with the government scheme, apart from any legal fees. In addition, says Brendan, “PLS loan amounts received are not taxable and do not count in terms of the Age Pension income test.” Security for the government scheme is usually the family home, but an investment property can be put up as security instead. Despite the broadened appeal of the PLS, itwill not suit everyone. If a property is already mortgaged, the conditions of an existing mortgage contract will often prevent an additional charge being placed on the property. And, of course, the existence of a mortgage will impact the value of the property for the purposes of determining the maximum l oan available. It is also important to understand that under the PLS, the money can only be borrowed as an income stream and not as a lump sum. “If you are seeking a lump sum, then a conventional reverse mortgage or home equity scheme will be required,” Brendan says.

Independent financial advice prior to commitment is essential; including the modelling of how the debt balance will increase over time.

Investment advisers consistently stress the importance of having a balanced portfolio and not putting “all your eggs in one basket”. Typically, they suggest that between 5% to 10% of a portfolio be invested in collectables such as precious metals, gemstones and art. Wisely selected, these assets can maintain their value even in the harshest of times. Quality opals fall into this category. Opals are worth considering because, unlike most other precious gems, they are impossible to make artificially. This means that when you invest in quality opals there is absolutely no chance they can be a fake. In addition, 95% of the worlds investment grade opals come from Australia. This makes it easier to trace their origin

and authenticate their value. On top of that, exploration and mining costs are continually going up.

"Big Blue"

• Large and beautiful Lightning Ridge gem • 88 carats • Intense electric blue green "foliage" pattern • Set in platinum

The fact of increasing demand is supported by Opal Auctions report that their Verified Sellers have sold 3,064 gemstones for the month of February 2019, in comparison to 2,735 for same period last year. This shows an increase of 20 % on last year’s sales for the same period. Together, these facts make a strong case for considering quality opals as part of a sound investment strategy. Could that be why Shakespeare called them “The Queen of Gems”, or is it because each opal is totally unique, and often spell-bindingly beautiful?

SOUNDS OF A CENTURY RECORDED ON SHELLAC AND VINYL The Sydney Jewish Museum will present an interactive exhibition that takes visitors on a musical journey through the records that changed lives and the technology that made it happen. Jukebox Jewkbox! A Century on Shellac and Vinyl celebrates the rich history of Jewish contributions to music in Australia and abroad – and music’s influence on Jewish life. Visitors to Jukebox Jewkbox, will travel through musical history since the 19th century invention of the gramophone and the vinyl record by German Jewish immigrant to the US, Emil Berliner. They can see examples of gramophones and phonographs, and walls of close to 500 record covers and listen to iconic music from throughout the ages from Jewish musicians, composers, music producers and songwriters, at the interactive listening station. Learn about the unique footprint that Jewish involvement has left on the Australian music scene through stories of some of our home-grown music heroes, includ-

ing Renee Geyer, Ben Lee, The Potbelleez and Tinpan Orange. Museum curator, Shannon Biederman says “From beloved songs to unknown gems and our own Australian stories, Jukebox Jewkbox! captures a century of music that has both shaped and been shaped by Jewish life. The exhibition takes visitors on a captivating visual and aural journey through nostalgic and some unexpected genres of music.” There is a dynamic line-up of public programs scheduled alongside the exhibition, including a performance by Lior, and screenings of the documentary film on Amy Winehouse’s life and the 1973 version of ‘A Star is Born’. Jukebox Jewkbox! officially launches on Sunday, April 14 at 6pm with an opportunity to interact with the multimedia exhibition, and a performance by pianist Simon Tedeschi. The exhibition opens to the public on Monday, April 15.

Social media is great, but there's nothing like really meeting real people. Speed meeting is like speed dating or speed networking, but it's not just for business or romance, it's for everyone who wants to meet new people, bump into old friends or catch up on local news. It's open to everyone including, residents, visitors, business owners, local councillors, business employees and anyone else who wants to drop in. The events will be run on the last Thursday of each month.

New home for The Ethic Cafe Congratulations to Laars Dudman and his team on their move from obscurity to the bright lights of New South Head Road. Previously tucked away beside BeFit training they simply ran out of space and made the journey of five hundred steps to their new home which is now brightened with flowers and makes the point of ethically sourcing everything they sell. For example their milk is sourced directly from the Little Big Dairy Co. It is single sourced and can be traced right back to the dairy from which it comes on the Macquarie River in the Central West of NSW. Shop 1, Royal Arcade, 401-401 NSH Rd, Double Bay 0452 423 348

Confident kids brighten community

Welcome to Heidi who recently opened her new premises in Bay Street. Heidi decided to become a beautician after finding that the NuSkin product range had cured both her problem of dry hair and skin and her daughter’s problems associated with stomach ailments. Heidi studied at the Sydney Dermal Institute and, after attaining a certificate in beauty, began doing home facials. She did this for many years, gaining more and more experience as her business grew. We wish her luck now that she now has her own treatment room in Double Bay.

Academic Excellence encourages their students to flourish and that brings lots of smiles to where they learn in the Royal Arcade, Double Bay, and as Louis Armstrong said “When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you” and that, it seems, is the sentiment of the business owners, customers, coffee shop vendors and bus queue members who regularly witness those smiles as students come and go from their classes. Principal and founder Alida Markovics says “Academic Excellence is not just another tutoring college, we encourage each student to achieve their intellectual and emotional potential, a life skill that extends well beyond the scope of school".

He has 40 years experience in the wholesale motor trade and a long string of satisfied customers.

What you get:

• The benefit of 40 years experience. • Good advice backed up with reasons. • A better price than trading in on a new car. • Immediate settlement by cheque, bank transfer or cash. • Time to shop around and get other opinions. • Honest opinions without any obligation. • Testimonials from past customers. • A free visit to inspect your car.

What you avoid:

His team drove a 25 year old car more than 30,000 kilometres in the harshest conditions, learning lots about themselves, and what a well engineered car can cope with.

• Waiting around for buyers who don’t turn up. • The possibility of having your car written off. • The hassle of listing your car on a website. • The costs of sprucing up your car for sale. • Traipsing around car yards all weekend. • Having strangers come to your home. • Dealing with car yard dealers. • The costs of selling your car. • High pressure salesmen.

TO SELL YOUR CAR CALL DOUG BRISCOE 0401 151 511

Doug learned his trade from his father, who ran their family wholesale motor vehicle business. His work was also his hobby and he is one the few people in the world to have taken part in a London to Sydney Motor Rally.

He hates to see older cars thrown out and reckons a 10 year old car with 100,000 km on the clock is only middle aged. As he says, “They’ve only done 10,000 kilometres a year and, and they’re still good for another 100,000 km. That means another 10 years of reliable motoring.”

CLASSIC CARS WE LOVE Edgecliff Automotive 2 Ocean Ave, Edgecliff 9363 5040 www.edgecliffautomotive.com.au

Cooper Park Garage

104 Manning Rd, Woollahra 9327 3774 www.cooperparkgarage.com.au

Lets talk about airconditioning... Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist.

He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself. Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your air-conditioning and ongoing ozone protection.

1960 Renault Floride

Firstly, just what is a classic car and why do people still love them? According to petralicious.com the lines and shapes that give the elegance and the beautiful body of loved classic cars was not designed on a computer, but with a pencil, paper and by drawings that reflected the prevailing moods and trends of the time. Production now could be said to replicate, with an eye always on meeting the target and quotas and shareholders requirements, rather than deliver unique and lasting style. Classic cars were largely a manual production, by multiple craftsmen and creators in woodwork, panel style, lovers of curves, colour feel and character. Their intentions were different to the car craftsmen of today. These older machines are the real deal, where the driver becomes a component of the delicate harmony generated by many parts that are crafted together, to become the classic car that we all love. When there is one of them in the workshop, people walk past the modern cars to admire these old masterpieces of style and grace. The classic car will likely survive much longer than the current owner, so the owner knows they are just the caretaker of a genuine artefact.

The general global definition of a classic car is 20 years old. To be classic and worth preserving is another distinction – these are “fine” “distinctive” and “worth restoring;” and they must remain much as they were originally designed. Classic Automobile Clubs often have their own definitions, ours is looser and really is about those older cars you see that make you smile and feel very good and maybe bring back youth and memories. The two classic cars featuring in this article is the black Porsche 911 933 and the 1960 Renault Floride. These classic cars come into our workshops at Edgecliff Automotive and Cooper Park Garage, where they are treated with the care and attention that such a vehicle requires. Joshua says to look after one of these vehicles is not just a matter of regular oil changes, much more is required. They have original parts. They are still available for Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. Your car will change its classification if the parts are not original. We often have a classic car parked on one of our hoists waiting for its parts to arrive from overseas. Preventative maintenance is the name of the game – often these cars are driven less than the more traditional cars, so there are special things you do to compensate. Your classic should have a service every year regardless of the kilometres you drove.

When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. If you want to hear more about the laws of thermo dynamics, and those of us who know Flanders and Swann from years ago, they have a video on youtube which is worth checking out. Put Flanders and Swann Thermodynamics into your search engine and be prepared to enjoy the show.

Every two years, check your brakes, change the brake fluid, oil and oil filter, transmission fluid, coolant and gear box. Every 4 years check diff oil and air conditioning regardless of kilometres. Maintain wheel bearings, keep the exterior clean and polished and keep out of heavy sunlight. If you drive in the country or snow areas, wash the dust and salt off the bottom of your car and the wheel rims Take it for a spin, show off your glorious car. If it is a convertible, put the top down and be proud; match your music to the day and enjoy it allowing everyone else to enjoy it as well. Bring it into Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, and allow us to share and look after your passion.

1960 RENAULT FLORIDE

It was bought out to deal with the dominating VW Beetle. Called the Floride after the Convention in Florida USA, at which it was asked for by the Renault US Executives. It was quickly changed to the Caravelle so as to not upset the other US states that the car was not named after. Louis Renault built his first automobile in 1898 and picture show it looks a lot like the horseless carriage those first cars were dubbed. Renault presented the Renault Floride at a Paris Automobile Event in October 1958, and took over 8,000 orders for the small sports car. In 1959, it was unveiled in the New York Motor Show where it was an instant success with 13,000 orders submitted. It was billed as “A dream car come true.” As a piece of iconic fun, the Floride celebrity was Sammy David Jnr.

PORSCHE 911 933

Porsche 911 933

The 911 933 model sold between Jan 1994 and early 1998, it was the last of the aircooled Porsches. The designers called it “a significant advance from a visual perspective.” It also came with a 15% increase in power over the earlier 911 models. That and other significant advances, such as a light-allow sub-frame with coil and wishbone suspension generally created an improved driving experience.

22 MANABOUTTOWN Students of the hirsute comment that when times are tough beards appear, and when they’re easy they go away. Statistics seem to bear that out with a recent survey showing that the popularity of beards has increased since 2011, with over 40 per cent of men now sporting some kind of facial fuzz, with a full beard remaining the most popular option. Cheap, versatile and adaptable, facial hair can change the shape of a man’s face and completely alter how he looks in jeans and a T-shirt or a suit. A few whiskers here and there can make a baby face look older, draw attention away from a thinning thatch and hide a multitude of chins. In short, it allows a man to be the ultimate chameleon.

BOWLERS, BOATERS & BEANIES for the bald & bearded bloke

So could this mean that men’s hats could be making a comeback too? Let’s see:The 1920’s it seems were the Heyday (Hay Day?) of Straw Boaters worn to protect the wearer from the summer sun and only worn in the summer, there was even an official "Straw Hat Day" when gentlemen switched from wearing their winter hats to wearing their summer hats. Somewhat modified, they have recently made a comeback as a lady’s fashion accessory, but for men it is doubtful they will return. NO! When looking for a way to protect the heads of horseback riders from branches, brothers Thomas and William Bowler came up with their namesake cap. The bowler hat was sturdy, compact, and appropriate for most any occasion. Though the bowler hat largely fizzled out by the 1980s, the item's original London manufacturers Lock & Co. still sell thousands each year. Expect to see it return when travel by horseback comes back into fashion. NO

Gems of Austrian wine Tucked into the postcardperfect countryside, Austrian wine producers have been crafting superlative wines, sparkling, dry, and sweet, from white and red grapes in small quantities at competitive prices for centuries.

Vienna, boasts 1,512 acres of working, economically viable vineyards in the city’s outer districts, accessible by metro, tram, and bus. Their existence speaks to a long tradition of winemaking and heurigers (known as wine taverns, dating back to the Middle Ages) ingrained deeply enough in the local economy and culture that they are protected against urban sprawl. Austria produces wines that range from Pinot Noir, to Riesling, to Pinot Blanc, but the region is most notably associated with the recently DAC-awarded specialty, Wiener Gemischter Satz. The difficult-topronounce name essentially recognizes a field blend of high-quality white grapes, harvested and processed together from the same vineyard. This style, once perceived as a humble quaff, has been elevated in both quality and status by a visionary group of producers. Domäne Baumgartner is currently reputed to be the largest wine estate in Austria. Having centuries of experience and, now,

combining tradition with innovation, Domäne Baumgartner produces outstanding wines. Indeed, Grüner Veltliner Rosenprinzessin (Rose Princess) is, truly, ‘Music in the Bottle’. This wine is ‘treated’ with music, having frequencies ‘encouraging’ the eventual outcome. The resulting wine is elegant and has a very good, full body. Taste the music – absolutely! Their ranges include classic, dry Grüner Veltliner wines, which are mediumbodied and full of character, through Zweigelt and Pinot Noir Grande Reserve productions, displaying most impressive fruit depths. All are great pairings with many dishes, complementing cuisine to an exceptional standard. Winery Steiner, is a family-owned winery in the Langenlois area. Several grape varieties are grown, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Muskateller, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and, of course, Grüner Veltliner. Their Steiner wine ranges include Grüner Veltliner Sommeliers and Privat Riede Neuberg. On, through Grüner Veltliner Riede Dechant Reserve, to others, that include Riesling Riede Steinhaus and Muskateller, to Zweigelt Reserve. These productions prove to be very popular. Each to their own, the Zweigelt is often selected to impress – and impress it certainly does! This production has many ‘devotees’ and is regularly chosen to grace numerous dining occasions. This red, fruited wine, is both delicate and elegant. The silk-red conveys throughout, from the appearance, through the bouquet, to the superb pleasures, on the mouth and palate, with a memorable finish.

A knit cap, closely resembling the beanie was worn in Scandinavia as far back as the Viking period. There is even a statuette of the Freyr (The Viking God of fertility) wearing one. Perhaps, that explains their present day popularity in Australia. Alternatively they may be popular because bald headed, bearded men feel the cold more acutely. YES!

Your Friendly Funeral Guy

Chris Cullen

Did you know that you don’t have to have a funeral? For a variety of reasons, some families are now choosing; no service, no attendance cremations. As the name indicates, this is a cremation with no funeral service and where no family or friends are in attendance. Another name for this service is a direct cremation. In this process, your funeral director will transfer your loved one from their place of death, place them in a coffin, and have the cremation performed. The ashes will then be returned to your family.

There are a number of reasons for making this choice. Families may not want the formalities of a traditional funeral service. Instead, they may choose to have a gathering at the beach or a local club or at a family home. In other circumstances, family members may be overseas and so the cremation can take place straight away with gatherings at a later stage. No service, no attendance cremations are significantly cheaper than a normal funeral because they do not involve the use of chapel, church, or hearse. Staff are not required for the day of the funeral, and there are no ancillary costs, like flowers or mass booklets.

T

You might wonder however, is there a specific benefit in having a funeral? After all, the person is dead, what use have they for a service? In actual fact, a funeral is a very helpful and important element in the grieving process. For some people the funeral serves as a way to say goodbye to their loved one. If the death was sudden, or for other reasons family members were not present at the time of passing, the funeral gives opportunity for an expression of grief.

Do you have a question for the Friendly Funeral Guy? T

Other people see it as a time to be with family and close friends to remember the person they’ve lost. For people who have grown up in a stoic environment, a funeral provides permission for sorrow to be shown.

T

I would love to answer your questions in future editions of the Eastern Suburbs Life newspaper.

Grief counsellors indicate that healthy grieving is facilitated by allowing the free expression of the emotions associated with loss.

Looking for modern, secure offices with quality amenities and 24/7 access? Coworking spaces may be just the answer.

Terms are also flexible, from one day to 12 months or more, and boardrooms and meeting rooms cater for up to 20 people.

Fast gaining in popularity, this shared option offers move-in ready spaces, equipment and services for different small business types and sizes as well as entrepreneurs.

The desk space as well as the desks themselves are generous, as is the storage space, and showers and change rooms are also provided.

Such spaces are particularly attractive when located in a top position, such as Edgecliff. One of the most convenient locations in Sydney – only six minutes by train to Sydney Town Hall and around 30 minutes to the domestic and international airports – it also has bus and taxi options as well as the Eastpoint shopping centre and medical services.

The reception is fully staffed from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, while convenient 24-hour access is provided through high-tech fingerprint access so there are no problems with lost keys, swipe cards or codes.

For many, this option has all the advantages of the CBD without the crowding and travel headache, says Angus Hannan, Business Manager of Paddock Offices, which is just two minutes from Edgecliff station.

of desks plus ‘quiet spots’ for phone call privacy.

COWORKING SPACE

Coworking can boost productivity as well as work opportunities. “We have a really good vibe here; there’s always something going on, which is good because I feel productivity depends on it – that’s why people love it here,” Angus reports. Not surprisingly, there’s a very low turnover of businesses. “Retention is a key requirement for us which keeps our service on track.”

“We get a lot of people further east – such as Watsons Bay, Bondi Junction, Double Bay – who don’t want to travel all the way into the city,” he observes. On-site parking is also available at Paddock Offices and bike storage is provided. Another coworking drawcard is being able to rent on flexible terms. “There’s no lock-in contract,” Angus explains. “If the business expands, they can move to a bigger space.” Paddock has private offices available for up to three people or businesses can use a number

High quality teaching and instruction Academic Excellence, founded by veteran educator Alida Markovics, is one of Sydney’s most long running and results orientated tutoring colleges.

Our experienced team of tutors have all achieved outstanding HSC results and been personally trained in teaching by Mrs Markovics, a former high school principal of 37 years’ educational experience. We support students beyond the classroom, focusing on innovative pedagogical techniques that give an edge to any student by holistically enhancing their approach to learning. In addition to intensive one-toone tutoring, our ‘brain training’ program employs cutting edge neurofeedback technology to help our students improve their concentration and working memory skills. Students’ learning and studying consequently become increasingly efficient and precise. We will soon be running our popular series of workshops for parents and students that cover study skills, exam skill and stress management. This year, we are excited to be introducing a careers evening, where students will have the unique opportunity to hear from professionals in a range of fields and ask practical questions. At Academic Excellence, we believe academic success comes from a combination of the smartest study techniques with high-quality

WAVERLEY

Main drag of Bondi Beach could become less friendly for drivers

Waverley Council is examining a range of options for transforming the streetscape of the main ‘drag’ of Bondi Beach, Campbell Parade. And one of the proposals on the table is doing away with cars over a large section of the strip.

According to a report tabled at a full meeting of Council said Campbell Parade was “motor vehicle dominated, which means it’s a hostile place for people. In some parts it’s as much as 82% road and 18% footpath.” So one option being looked at is to ‘pedestrianise’ the strip, with pedestrians, buses and timed service vehicles solely between Hall Street and Beach Road. Parking would be removed on the beach side. However, the report recommended that the pedestrianisation concept be put on the back burner in favour of less drastic measures, such as reducing vehicle lanes to one each way and creating a cycle lane on the beach side of the parade.

Call for better bus info at Bondi Junction

Waverley Council wants the State Transit Authority to rev up its delivery of basic facilities at the Bondi Junction bus/rail interchange. Councillor Elaine Keenan moved a motion on improving signage and other facilities at the interchange, noting: • A lack of information boards providing bus information in relation to bus stands or bus timetables; • No STA customer service staff stationed at the bus/

rail interchange to assist passengers with finding the correct bus stands or timetables; • Directions to the bus/ rail interchange are poorly signposted from the Bondi Junction shopping area for non-residentsand tourists. The motion, seconded by Councillor George Copeland, called on Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and senior Sydney Bus management to consider improvements to bus/ rail interchange customer service and information. Specifically, TfNSW should provide signposting in Bondi Junction Mall that is safe and not imposing, to direct bus and train users to both entrances of the bus/rail interchange TfNSW was urged to provide electronic information boards in or around Bondi Junction Mall that is safe and not imposing, to inform bus and train users of the various bus and train departures. The motion was carried at a full meeting of council.

Council chilled on pill testing

Waverley councillors have called on the state government to hold a trial of pill testing at music festivals. Plus they want police to take a softer approach to festival goers, doing away with strip searches and the use of sniffer dogs. A full council meeting was told the issue was a local one because there are a large number of music festivals in and around the Waverley local government area each year, including Electric Gardens and Sydney City Limits. Councillors agreed to write to the NSW Premier and NSW Health Minister asking for a trial of pill testing, the introduction of amnesty bins, an end to the use of police drugs dogs and strip searches at music festivals, and improved support services from festival organisers including free cold water, chill out areas, on-site medical tents/services and shaded areas.

RANDWICK

Call to release secret metro plans

Randwick Council has called on the state government to release details of secret plans for a railway link to Malabar. The council only found out about the proposal from an article in the SMH, which reported four "strategic options" developed for an eastern extension of the Sydney Metro West line are under consideration: • From the CBD to Kogarah via the airport • Miranda via the airport • Malabar via Randwick • A line branching off to both Malabar and Kogarah For the Malabar rail link, there would be stations at Zetland, UNSW, Maroubra and Malabar. Extension of the line would have the benefits of "unlocking urban renewal opportunities" and "enhancing housing supply". However, Randwick Council fears this will mean rampant over-development along the rail corridor. Council has asked Transport for NSW to release to the public all documents and plans for the Sydney Metro West line.

Support given to Blak Markets

Council agreed to contribute $45,000 in funding to the not-for-profit group First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation over the next 18 months to support the continued growth of the popular Blak Markets. The market is held quarterly on Bare Island, La Perouse and provides economic development opportunities to local Indigenous people by creating the opportunity to sell original and affordable Aboriginal artworks, handicrafts, homewares and jewellery. Suzanne Williamson, Randwick Council Economic Development Officer, said: “Since the launch at Bare Island five years ago the Blak Markets has become a well-

known and respected brand with the scope of the market extended to also provide opportunities to remote communities to showcase and sell their art and craft. Every Blak Markets showcases a free indigenous cultural performance program featuring authentic experiences including Smoking, Whale and Healing Ceremonies, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander dancers and singers as well as traditional Aboriginal craft workshops.” Council will contribute funding of $7,500 per event for six quarterly Blak Markets events for a trial period ending June 2020,

Rabbitohs new home one step closer

The South Sydney Rabbitohs and its community outreach arm, Souths Cares, is one step closer to calling Maroubra home. Council agreed to finalise a lease arrangement for Souths to use a proposed Community and High Performance Centre to be built on the Bunnerong Road side of Heffron Park. The Centre will be funded by the Rabbitohs and grants from all three levels of government. Council is also building a community gymnastics centre and indoor sports centre which will be incorporated into the same building. The proposed design will be subject to community consultation.

Sima Truuvert planning scholarship established
