Also fanning the global warming debate is an artwork called ‘One Day Will Come’ by Jane Gillings, made from 150 discarded pedestal fans. Here’s her artist statement: “As the world warms, so do we. As we try to cool ourselves down we contribute to the drain on the energy systems that are warming us up. This cycle of demand outstripping supply spins around and around like the fans so commonly discarded. The fans are presented as the unknown soldier. Disposable and wasted regardless of whether they work or not.” While some exhibits may spark reflection on the environment, others may transport you to a spiritual sphere. This year there’s an installation six little tabernacles for people to gather, congregate and celebrate the Jewish festival of Sukkot.

Rose Bay Community Gardens

At Rose Bay Community Garden, they are creating a beautiful garden for the local community, where people can learn, socialise and have fun. BREAKS ANOTHER SOUND BARRIER Cochlear (Australian hearing implant company) and GN Hearing (Danish hearing aid company) have collaborated with Google to develop technology that allows direct streaming of audio from Android mobile phones to GN hearing aids or Cochlear’s latest sound processor – the Nucleus® 7 Sound Processor. This technology is available on Google’s latest Android platform. Around 466 million people worldwide live with disabling hearing loss, and the number is increasing by millions every year, according to the World Health Organisation.

The new streaming technology will be available by way of an update to Android 10, plus a firmware update on the hearing devices. The streaming specification is open source, which allows other manufacturers of hearing aids and Android devices to offer direct audio streaming in the future. Cochlear approached local Audiology Clinic, Edgecliff Hearing, to assist in the promotion of this new technology advance, as the clinic is well known to be experts in both hearing aids and cochlear implants. Cochlear staff spent a day filming at Edgecliff Hearing last month to see the technology ‘in action’.

An uplifting story about Dementia

Rose Sevitt's husband Lex (Alex) was a practising psychologist up until 6 years ago. Lex specialised in helping children with ADD. Suddenly, Lex started to forget where he parked his car and he had to give up driving. He soon forgot how to count backward, and he could not remember things. Rose remembers the decline as slow, but it was happening. She realised that he could not be left home alone and hired the help of a full-time carer whilst she worked. Lex battled with the stairs and the family had to look into full-time care options. This led them to a nursing home which Rose calls an 'institution.' Rose and Alex's two children believe that Alex would be dead if he were still at the nursing home he was at prior to moving into one of the Group Homes Australia's homes. Rose and her children are incredibly grateful. Rose says: "The care is wonderful. It is a pleasure to walk into the home. It smells and looks beautiful. The residents are well loved and cared for by the homemakers. They take them on a bus for amazing outings, to the beach, BBQs, museums, Vaucluse House and meals." Rose visits every night at meal times to help feed Lex, as his hands shake. Rose adds: "The food itself is fabulous, placemats are set at the table, the table is set beautifully. Nothing is spared. Great quality, excellent cooked meals are given to the residents. I know that if for some reason, I cannot go that the carers will give Lex the attention he needs." Rose remembers that meal times at the previous aged care home were like a mad asylum. She was worried about hygiene and would not even drink a coffee there. At Group Homes Australia, family members are offered drinks and meals. Rose knows that it's so clean and she is happy to share a meal or drink with her husband. Rose used to feel depressed every time

she visited Lex at the previous aged care home. Rose states: "The previous aged care home was an 'institution' with 100 people who were 'institutionalised'. It's a very bad environment. People go quickly that way." "Lex has six other residents in the home with him. They are made to feel that they are in their own home. They can water the plants and bake and they can set their own routines. I cannot get over the display of love." "My children say to me:' Mum, we don't know how you got him in there, but you have made all of our lives great as we know he is looked after and loved'." Rose's son visits every Wednesday and plays guitar and sings with the residents. A 94-year-old resident dances to the music. The minute the music plays the residents get up and dance. Rose exclaims: "That place becomes alive". "This type of care should be the future for the aged and dementia in Australia", says Rose.

Tutu Studios Ballet

ESL: What inspired you to start Tutu Studios Ballet? Elke: Honestly, I was very interested in

early childhood dance and creating a program specifically for very young children. So I just went for it. I was completely unprepared for how successful it would be. I went from teaching 4 classes in 2 days in 2011, and it rapidly grew to 90 classes in 8 locations. I was also fascinated by the way young children learn and I felt pure joy in seeing children grow in so many ways with ballet. The immediacy and spontaneity of teaching young children is rewarding and really keeps me on my toes.

ESL: How many years has Tutu Studios Ballet been established? Elke: Since 2011, so 9 years. ESL: What ways is business is unique? Elke: We teach children from 18 months

– 12 years but we have a particular focus, specialisation and interest in teaching children 18 months – 7 years. Teaching early childhood dance requires a particular skill set and it is this that really fascinates me. Our strength is in teaching young children in the way they can best learn. Through stories and pretend play. Pretend play is the way young children make sense of the world and because we use this in our teaching engagement, enjoyment and learning is very high for the children. Using pretend play in our ballet classes strengthens children’s social and emotional skills, nurtures their imaginations and creativity, strengthens their thinking skills and language skills.

ESL: You have a lot of studios. Where are they located? Elke: We have locations at Double Bay,

Bellevue Hill, Bronte, Randwick, Clovelly, Coogee, Maroubra, Kensington, Alexandria. We have a number of locations in response to demand. Our classes are very popular and it is wonderful to be able to offer our classes to more children.

ESL: Who else works with you? Elke: I have 7 gorgeous teachers and 7

assistant teachers. I also have an amazing Studio Manager and an Admin Assistant.

ESL: What do you like about your business? Elke: I love the immediacy, spontaneity

and satisfaction of seeing children flourish through dance. I love to see their joy as they dance and the confidence and sense of personal achievement it brings to each child.

For over 20 years, Assistance Dogs Australia have been training and placing very special dogs with Australians with physical disabilities such as; cerebral palsy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, and those injured in serious accidents.

There is much controversy about pet vaccinations and the need to do it. Pet owners can go to the expense of titre testing but that would tell you at a point in time not the future of viral protection.

The benefits of the Assistance Dogs are immediate and impactful, reducing stress and isolation for individuals and families, while improving relationships and allowing people with disabilities to save muchneeded money on paid care. Additionally, recipients of dogs are more likely to venture out of the house with their buddy, increasing their physical activity and often reducing reliance on medication. Physical Disability Dogs lower taxpayer costs to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and help people with disabilities participate more actively in their community, stimulating the economy and helping to educate the public about their very special companion. It is illegal to refuse entry Service Dog are provided with a photographic identity badge as proof of Service Dog status, which they must take with them in public, and a Service Dog jacket for the dog.

KALINDA SCHOOL AND ECHO’S STORY

Echo the Educational Support Dog spends her days working at school, and evenings and weekends with Principal Belinda Wallace. She is a much-loved part of Kalinda Support School, a school in Griffith, NSW, for children with a wide range of disabilities. “Echo provides emotional support to students suffering anxiety, pain, discomfort or any number of playground boo boos, picks up items that students who are in wheelchairs have dropped, walks next to students on their way back to class, listens to students read, lets students learn grooming skills and brings smiles to staff and student’s faces.’’ said Belinda. “There is no doubt that she is a clever dog and we are extremely fortunate to have her on our team!’’ “I don’t get students coming to show me their work anymore… they come to show Echo!’’ said Belinda. Echo was provided to Kalinda SSP completely free of charge by Assistance Dogs Australia. As part of the Sponsor a Puppy Gang, Echo’s training was paid for by generous monthly donations from the general public. Supporters are pleased to see her progress, commenting, “Delighted to see Echo doing such a wonderful job after being one of her sponsors from a puppy. Commercial workspaces Times are changing and so is the way we work. As employers embrace a modern approach to the nine to five, their expectations for workspaces have also altered considerably. The increased demand for a workspace that meets not only the functionality requirements of an office, but recognises the new expectations of the modern market, poses a new hurdle for agents looking to lock in tenants. Savills’ Liz Braithwaite says tenants are now seeking a space where they have everything at their fingertips. “They’re wanting a commercial building similar to a hotel, in that they have everything in the building so their staff don’t have to leave.” Among the growing lists of requests is concierge services, health and fitness amenities and cafés on their doorstep.

She believes if there were two buildings, exactly the same, but one offered a concierge service, tenants would pay more for that, because they know they’ll be able to retain staff and poach younger members of the workforce. Along with a higher demand for amenities, agile workstations are becoming the new norm for high-earning companies.

JLL’s recent report of top trends for tenants in 2019, found larger companies are already locating a third of their total real estate to flexible space, a figure which could climb as high as 45% by 2020. Braithwaite says she’s seen an uptake in co-working commercial space in areas like Parramatta and Wollongong, as CBD based companies attempt to lure locals with a shorter commute. While these firms are taking up more space, they’re not signing on to customary long

leases, instead they’re seeking flexible term options. This is “not only for the flexibility of their staff, but the flexibility of their business and their balance sheet at the end of the day.”

Braithwaite identified a series of other wants and needs, including:

Climate change forms a strong theme in this year’s Sculpture by the Sea, with many of the 111 entrants making strong statements on the environment.

Sam’s tree – he describes it as a “native dead tree” – is just under six metres high (six metres being the height limit for Sculpture by the Sea exhibits). “It depicts a bit of what life will be like if we don’t do anything about climate change,” he says. Another work looks at coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef. NSW artist Sallie Portnoy’s creation, titled ‘Sea Garden,’ is made of recycled glass. Her artist statement says: “Animated by the light shining through the glass, these luminous blooms stand

According to the 2016 census of population, there were 11,656 residents in Bondi Beach. In Bondi Beach, 45.3% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 8.7%, New Zealand 3.4%, South Africa 2.3%, United States 2% and Brazil 2%. 64.8% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Spanish 3.5%, French 2.4%, Portuguese 2.1%, Italian 1.9% and Russian 1.7%.

2. THE LENGTH OF BONDI BEACH

The crescent-shaped Bondi Beach measures about 1km long. It has an area of 1.22sq km.

3. BUSIEST DAY ON RECORD

The busiest summer day for Bondi Beach was when its estimated the number of beach goers exceeds 40,000.

3. THE MOST INFAMOUS DAY AT BONDI BEACH

In 1938, on a day known as 'Black Sunday' some 200 people were swept into the sea in one moment after several huge waves hit people gathered on the sand bar. Five died and dozens were injured in the deadliest day on record at the beach. Earlier in the day lifeguards had pulled 74 people from the surf in one hour.

4. RECORDED SHARK ATTACKS AT BONDI BEACH

Between 1990 and 2017 there have been a total of 3 unprovoked shark attacks at Bondi Beach. None have been

In 2007, the Guinness World Record for the largest swimsuit photo shoot was set at Bondi Beach, with 1,010 women wearing bikinis taking part.

7. WI-FI AT BONDI BEACH

In 2011, Waverley Council implemented WiFi to Bondi Beach users. Service is free with limits on access periods and downloads per use. The cost of setup was estimated to be between $34,000 and $50,000 with annual costs of $25,000.

8. WORLD'S FIRST SURF LIFESAVING CLUB

Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club claims to be the world's first surf lifesaving club.

9. THE BONDI ICEBERGS

The Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club origin dates back to 1929 and owes its origins to the desire of a band of dedicated local lifesavers who wished to maintain their fitness during the winter months. They formed the Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club and drew up a constitution and elected office bearers. Included in the constitution was a rule that to maintain membership it was mandatory that swimmers compete on three Sundays out of four for a period of five years.

Welcome to the first of a series of Backstreet Walks in the Eastern Suburbs.

In this edition of ESL, I through the backstreets of North Bondi, looking for hidden finds that most of us just don't notice. So get your walking shoes on, leave the car at home, breathe the fresh air, and walk your neighbourhood with me, and get some exercise at the same time.

Crossing Michell St, I head down Glenayer Ave, passing a rather oddly designed wooden block house, nestled amongst Federation, Modern and Art Deco architecture.

Walking up steep, Military Rd towards the bus terminal I notice a Minion bollard, what a great idea to use street art to cover those ugly bollards!

In Sept, Waverley welcomed a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Labor Councillor Paula Masselos and Greens Councillor Elaine Keenan, both of Lawson Ward, were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Waverley.

CYCLEWAY CONSTRUCTION

Waverley Council supports changes to assist local businesses and customers during Bondi Junction cycleway construction.

I begin my walk at North Bondi RSL in Ramsgate Ave, which was founded on Mar 1944 by some of the original members of the Rats of Tobruk. After the Rats of Tobruk came back from WWII they established the RSL Sub-Branch known as Tobruk House in North Bondi, with the nickname of 'The Rathouse'.

Then onto Blair St, where people are socialising, eating and enjoying the ambiance of the village atmosphere, amongst cafes and eclectic shops. Walking up Blair St towards the "Vent" , I veer right onto Wairoa Ave, noticing streetart on Savion's side wall and on the facade of WAYS Youth Centre. My walk ends back at Campbell Pde, Bondi Beach. I hope you will enjoy walking North Bondi..and remember to look around, look up, look down, smell the roses and enjoy what's in your own backyard.

The North Bondi bus terminal, is surrounded by village shops, cafes, eateries and other local shops that have a ‘Miami’ vibe, due to the Art Deco architecture.

Changes will include: • Switching off parking meters in the streets immediately surrounding the cycleway construction to assist local businesses and their customers: • Beginning with the parking meters in Denison St (between Ebley St and Oxford St), Spring St (between Newland St and Denison St) and Newland St (between Ebley St and Oxford St) during the current construction stage • Regulatory time limits will remain in place to ensure parking turnover. • A rolling program of similar changes to parking meters will occur throughout the cycleway construction; and • Extending the hours of operation in Council’s Eastgate, Hollywood and Library car parks • Offering 2-hour free parking to all users of the Library car park

Waverley Council appointed Hibernian Contracting Pty Ltd as head contractor for the $1.8 million Seven Ways Streetscape Upgrade project in Bondi.

COUNCIL MOVES TO BAN GLYPHOSATE 4

Waverley Council has moved to immediately cease using glyphosate-based weedkillers such as Roundup in sensitive areas and phase out all use by 2020/21.

It was designed by the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage and it's aim was to provide ventilation to the sewers to prevent the air inside from becoming "dense". Beside the Vent are the Aboriginal engravings in Bondi Golf Course. Here you can see whales, humans fish and mundoes. Sadly, it was re-grooved by Waverley Council

Don’t miss St Anne’s Church which is a fine example of Inter-War Romanesque church architecture. In 1934, the architects Fowell and McConnel won a design competition for a new Catholic Church in Bondi, and It was awarded the Sir John Sulman Medal by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1935. You can see the plaque on the front. And don't forget to go inside!

As I walk down Blair St, a beautiful wide street, you cannot help noticing the beautiful flowers in the centre median strip, as well as, community gardens with herbs and edible plants, and I notice a sign saying that part of the road has been made from recycled glass. Bravo! Waverley Council.

Sensitive areas include playgrounds, areas around schools, Council’s sporting fields, Bondi Park, Campbell Pde, Biddigal Reserve, Bronte Park and Gully and Tamarama Park and Gully.

It is re-sheeting sections of Blair Street, North Bondi and Henrietta and St Thomas Streets, Bronte with Reconophalt, an innovative asphalt product composed of materials that would otherwise likely end up in landfill, stockpiled, or as a pollutant in the local environment. Each tonne of Reconophalt contains around 800 soft plastic bag and packaging equivalents, 252 glass bottle equivalents, toner from 18 used printer cartridges and 300 kilograms of reclaimed asphalt pavement.

A CLASSIC CAR IN THE MAKING: AUDI RS AUDI FACTS • AUDI origins are complex, going back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch; and two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer), leading to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. • DKW (Dampf-Kraft-Wagen-in English means 'steam-powered car'). By late 1920’s, DKW was the pre-eminent world motorbike manufacturer and also made small cars. Wanderer made midsized cars. • AUDI produced luxury midsized cars. Issues with his CFO caused a split allowing Horch to register the register new AUDI company. • Horch, in 1909 registered the new name AUDI Automobilewerk. 'AUDI' is the Latin translation of Horch, derived from the German word 'horchen' which means 'hark/listen'. Horch made highend luxury vehicles.

Josh said “You should write about this car, it is a classic in the making!” ...So here is everything you need to know about the AUDI RS! August Horch, who began the AUDI Automobilewerk PL Company had previously worked as a Production Manager for Karl Benz. His AUDI team began to make racing cars developed by Ferdinand Porsche and Robert Eberan von Eberhost. Porsche was the Chief Engineer and von Eberhost the Development Engineer. What could possibly be more auspicious than a group of people with those names coming together the create The AUDI high performance cars? Then came cars with the RS badge. The RS is AUDI’s highest performance level model range. They are eligible to be given the title ‘halo vehicles’ According to Wikiedia a 'halo effect' is the tendency for positive impressions of a person, brand or product to positively influence one’s opinion or feeling in other areas.' It is due to the pioneering of some of AUDI’s engineering ability and far advanced technology that the AUDI RS model falls into what Josh called “a classic in the making.” The RS models are the most powerful cars ever made by AUDI, usually avail-

able only for a limited time and only into select markets. For example, they are too spartan for the US market who want luxury touches like power-adjustable front seats and power windows on all doors. The focus on the RS models designed for Europe is on performance rather than luxury. The RS4 for example has lightweight racing-style front seats and wind-up windows in their rear doors. The focus is not on sport luxury, just sport. When the AUDI RS comes into the workshop, it is noticed. It sits sleek and powerful in it's space. It sounds amazing in the unbaffled space of the garage. The RS branding are initials from the German 'RennSport' that translates literally into 'racing sport.' You know what you are looking at.

Eberan von Eberhost designed 'The Silver Arrow' and gave it to Rosemeyer, Stuck and von Delius to race.

• During WWll Automobile manufacturing plants in Germany were turned towards military hardware production and of course, became prominent targets for destruction; only AUDI survived.

The combined geniuses, August Horch, Ferdinand Porsche and Robert Eberan von Eberhorst resulted in the 'classic in the making' AUDI RS model.

• In 1958, Auto Union was bought by Daimler-Benz and was sold just 7 years later to the Volkswagen Group.

Why you may need income protection insurance What would you do if the main breadwinner in your household could no longer bring in an income? Do you have a Plan B? Most people don’t. That’s where insurance comes in. For a lot of people, their income is their most valuable asset. If you are currently 45 on a salary of $80,000, you could earn around $2.15 million over the next 20 years. But what if you suffer a debilitating illness or accident that deprives you of your ability to work? What if you get retrenched and can’t get another job that brings in the money to meet your mortgage repayments and other expenses? You could run down your savings very quickly and face financial difficulty. “Income protection insurance gives you peace of mind because you know you’ll be able to meet your financial commitments in the event of that worst-case scenario,” says financial planner Brendan Whitehouse, who specialises in retirement and pre-retirement strategies. You typically receive a monthly benefit of up to 75% of your income to replace lost earnings while you recover. “The costs are tax-deductable, unless the premiums

are part of your superannuation package,” says Brendan, Director of BRW Financial Group. “Some people find it more convenient to pay for income protection out of their super because it defers the costs of premiums. On the other hand, it eats away at the balance of your super account. It’s helpful to get professional advice about what form of income protection will suit you. For instance, if you are self-employed people may prefer an ‘agreed value’ policy that covers you regardless of your employment status at the time of the event.” According to the Australian financial regulator ASIC, income protection insurance “is especially suitable for self-employed people, small business owners or professionals whose business relies heavily on their ability to work.” Brendan tells how he had one self-employed client who (some anecdote about one of your self-employed clients and income protection insurance). Understanding the policy conditions Most income protection policies offer a range of waiting periods before you start receiving the insurance benefit (with options normally between 14 days and two years).

You can also choose from a range of benefit payment periods, with a maximum cover generally available up to age 65. “Income Protection insurance premiums will generally be lower if you choose a longer waiting period and shorter benefit payment period,” says Brendan.

And should you need to claim on your policy, you’ll need to know what kinds of medical or other documentation will be required. All the more reason to get professional advice.

You can pay for income protection insurance in either stepped or level premiums. “Stepped premiums start out cheaper, but increase over time, while level premiums typically start out more expensive but stay constant so they become the cheaper option after about ten years,” says Brendan.

They amazed all who saw them, but back in Europe many thought they brought bad luck, despite the fact that they had been valued as a gem far back as 4,000 BC and were later even coveted by Mark Antony (of Cleopatra fame) That sentiment was soon to change as Queen Victoria became an ardent fan and made sure her subjects knew that she did not subscribe to these rumours and superstitions. During that time Australia became the largest producer of opal in the World and created much of the world’s most treasured jewellery, including the Andamooka Opal, given to Queen Elizabeth in 1954, to mark the occasion of her first official state visit to Australia. The opal was selected by the South Australian Government after an extensive search for the finest opal ever found at the South Australian opal fields. Once cut it weighed 203 carats and displayed a magnificent array of colours including red, blue and green. It was set with diamonds into an 18 carat palladium necklet and presented to the Queen at a state banquet in Adelaide, togethwith matching earrings. WAYS Youth Space in conjunction with the recently renamed after school care program ‘WAYS Headquarters’ is offering a great new free makeup workshop for young girls aged 12 and above. As part of the Girls Space initiative, the workshop was trialled in Term 3 and is growing in popularity as a safe space for young girls to get together after school and practice makeup application. With expert instructors from Academy of Makeup (AOM) supplying their tools of trade, expert tips and guidance in makeup application, it’s no wonder the girls are loving it. “It’s been such a hit with our young girls, the way they interact is so sweet,” enthuses Loren Maddams, WAYS Youth Space Manager. Local growers were invited to put their patch on the map, and donate some home grown produce in each exchange to a crowd farmed growers feast at 'Three Blue Ducks' in Bronte. The Ducks transformed the locally grown produce into a mind-blowing feast enjoyed by all. The ‘crowd farming’ idea caught on and we were soon approached by Remo Guiffre of TEDx and food extraordinaire Jill Dupliex, with an outrageous idea to crowd farm for 2,200 people at the Opera House. The results exceeded all expectations.

Wayside Chapel Wayside Chapel’s Community Services Centre’s (CSC) – one in Kings Cross and one in Bondi – have been providing community services to members of the eastern suburbs since 1964.

CSC staff and volunteers work together, seven days a week, to provide those of our community who are sleeping rough with a safe space and amenities such as showers and emergency clothing, as well as, information and referral services within the inner city. A notice of motion to a full council meeting by Liberal councillors Angela Burrill and Leon Goltsman said: “Residents of the streets surrounding the western end of Oxford Street have reported that their properties are becoming inundated with rats, which they believe is due to building site excavations occurring on Oxford Street.

Councillors Burrill and Goltsman pointed out that “Council has historically allocated budgets to carry out rat baiting programmes in Bondi Junction, mainly in the pedestrian mall and in Spring Street.” Peter Monks Director, Planning, Environment and Regulatory, informed the meeting that Council was already taking action “in response to earlier complaints from residents about rats in Bondi Junction” and was getting quotes from pest control companies.

Waverley Council is working on a range of new clifftop safety measures after a young woman plunged 30 metres to her death at Diamond Bay, Vaucluse. She was said to have been taking a selfie at the time.

New mayor says cruise ship fight a top priority

Randwick’s just-elected mayor is working closely with the community coalition fighting state government plans for a cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay.

A permanent balustrade and temporary fencing have been installed at the site of the tragedy to deter people from accessing the cliff edge. There will also be improved signage and increased ranger presence at the site. Further measures under discussion include CCTV and parking restrictions. Meanwhile, Diamond Bay remains a popular selfie spot. People have been snapping themselves there since April, when there was apparently a lot of exposure in social media. Waverley Council general manager Ross McLeod said in a statement that the additional safety measures and ranger presence were urgently required due to “ongoing behaviour from members of the public creating a potential risk to life”. Councillors have agreed to seek meetings about the clifftop safety issues with the member for Vaucluse, Gabrielle Upton, and Diamond Bay/Vaucluse and Dover Heights precinct committees. Diamond Bay is a popular fishing spot, with a number of long-established tracks, some reasonably safe and others a lot more intrepid, leading down to the rock platform. The local fishing community should be part of the discussions.

RANDWICK

Councillor Danny Said says helping the community make its case against the proposal is at the top of his agenda and that he will be shortly be meeting port officials with Save the Bay Coalition leader Maria Poulos. Meanwhile the council is trying to get heritage listing for the Yarra Barra/ La Perouse coastal fringe and spending $50,000 on other strategies to fight the cruise plan including commissioning consultants to assess the area’s environmental and cultural heritage. The terminal the government wants to build would cater to mega cruise ships like Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas (pictured). These floating cities tower so high above the water that they can’t fit under the harbour bridge to dock at White Bay. The federal government has dismissed docking facilities for the massive vessels at its naval base on Garden Island, citing security concerns despite recently letting two Chinese war ships dock there. So now it has its sights set on the only remaining patch of unspoiled coastland at the south end of Botany Bay.

Noise nightmare from light rail depot

Residents in Doncaster Ave, Kensington are suffering severe noise pollution from the new light rail depot alongside the Racecourse. Greens Councillor and Deputy Mayor Philipa Veitch said excessive noise was a concern for residents right along the rail corridor and “has affected their health, wellbeing, property, and amenity.” She told full meeting of Randwick Council that Doncaster Ave residents next to the light rail ‘stabling yard’ were among the hardest-hit victims of the new public transport network, now in the testing phase. Despite the construction of an acoustic wall between the rail depot and the homes, residents are suffering an onslaught of noise. They are also being dazzled by the ranks of floodlights illuminating the tram facility at night. The state government has agreed to fund the planting of bamboo between the Doncaster Ave properties and the acoustic wall, but Councillor Veitch wants further compensation for affected residents in the form of double glazing, air conditioning and visual screening blinds.

Our campaign to save paediatric cardiac services at the Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick continues with the parliamentary petition having now been mailed out. This is an issue of deep concern to countless people in our community. Critically ill children will face life-threatening delays in receiving treatment if the NSW government closes this facility. We are asking that you, your friends and family take the opportunity to sign and return the petition to my office – the return postage is already paid. 2019 NSW VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Recently I had the privilege of attending the 2019 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards for Sydney City and Eastern Suburbs. This was a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate the amazing contribution that volunteers make to our communities. I thank each and every volunteer in my electorate of Coogee for giving up their time, effort and expertise for the betterment of others. Volunteers make a phenomenal contribution across the eastern suburbs. People just like Linda Deutsch, who was awarded the 2019 Adult Volunteer of the Year for her work teaching English language skills to people from nonEnglish speaking backgrounds at the Junction Neighbourhood Centre. The Sailors with Disabilities Wright of Passage volunteers were awarded the 2019 Volunteer Team of the Year for their work helping young people who have disengaged from school or TAFE via a workplace learning program that teaches new skills and provides a pathway to work. The Eastern Suburbs 2019 Volunteer of the Year is Philip Feinstein, who founded the Music for Refugees program to help provide self esteem, confidence and happiness for refugees at the Villawood Detention Centre. He has helped collect musical instruments to donate through the program and was invited to extend its work at the Christmas Island Detention Centre. I am pleased to advise my office is now a drop-off point if you have any instruments you wish to donate - no pianos please!
