Are there many better places to watch Sydney’s New Years Eve fireworks than Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs? From here we can see the traditional harbour views that are beamed all over the world. Views with the Harbour, the Opera House and of course Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Fireworks aside, we are pleased to report that the BONDI BUZZ section of the paper has grown from just one page a few editions ago to eight pages and now includes material about many new, and well established, Bondi businesses.

The fireworks were first televised in 1995 with the 9pm family display being the main event and the midnight event lasting only 3 minutes, and featuring only Sydney Tower. Things have moved on since then with the budget for 2018/19 being $5.78 million, a not insignificant sum. However, when you consider that it entertains 1.6 million people that’s just $3.60 a head, cheaper than a ticket to the movies. It’s estimated that 1 million of these people are tourists attracted to Sydney by the event.

The producers of the Bondi Rescue reality TV show have warned beachgoers that they’ll face prosecution if they try “faking it” for the cameras.

Waverley Council has just approved the shooting of the 15th series of the hugely popular program this summer for a fee of $115,000 plus 5% of net profits.

Rescue has done a great job spreading an international message about staying between the between the flags,” he said.

Bondi Rescue is produced by Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder (CJZ). It has been in production since 2005 and is one of Australia’s most successful TV exports, screened in over 100 countries.

MORE JOY LESS STRESS HEARING LOSS SHOULD BE TREATED EARLY Hearing is one of our five precious senses, in which we detect and reframe our perceptions of the world around us. It is how we can make ‘sense’ of the world. If you are experiencing difficulties with your hearing, you are not alone. One in six Australians have some form of hearing loss. The prevalence of hearing loss in our community increases with age. Three in four Australians over the age of 70 years have a hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the most common health complaints for people over the age of 60. Despite this, research shows on average it takes 10 years for a person who suspects they have a hearing problem to take action and seek the help of an audiologist. A decrease in hearing abilities may affect the brain, making it more difficult to

understand speech and increasing listening effort. Scientists are discovering that hearing devices, such as hearing aids or cochlear implants, not only improve hearing but also ‘preserves brain function’. Hearing loss has been linked to a reduction in quality of life and psychological wellbeing. Identifying hearing loss, and the appropriate hearing device fitting and rehabilitation, may have a positive impact on quality of life. While age related hearing loss cannot be cured, early assessment and treatment can reconnect you with the sounds you love to hear. Therefore, it has been recommended that everyone over 60 should have their hearing checked every two years, and those with diabetes, every 12 months. Many of us want a perfect day. Expecting perfection results in disappointment and frustration. Accept that things can go wrong. Remember what is really important, and it's not the food, the presents or the decorations.

A family occasion is not one person's responsibility. Talk to family members before the day and suggest a dispersal of tasks. In all relationships it is important to set boundaries. People often feel guilty if they don't accept an invitation or a request. They feel they are letting others down. However, saying yes when you don't want too can lead to resentment, supressed anger and exhaustion, all of which are well-known triggers of stress.

Learn to accept when someone says no to your request. Don't take it personally. They are probably just very busy or feel overloaded themselves.

ACKNOWLEDGE GRIEF

Family occasions can be sad events, especially if the family has suffered a death, divorce or major life changes during the year. The loss of a loved one is keenly felt at this time. Instead of trying to play happy families, acknowledge the sadness. Focus on supporting each other through a tuff day. Put aside any grievances you may have for another day.

LONELINESS

Many people are alone on these special days. If this has happened to you think about joining a community lunch or volunteering your services. Maybe you could organise a group of friends who are in a similar situation. Let others know you will be alone. You might be surprised by their generosity.

ACCEPTANCE

Accepting our family members as they are and not as we want them to be can be difficult and family occasions are not the time to try and bring about changes in behaviour or complex relationships. Unresolved issues from childhood, such as favouritism, rejection, control and disappointment can resurface at these events. If you find yourself becoming too stressed, unhappy or angry remove yourself from the situation, perhaps go into the garden, or if necessary, leave the event. Angry words spoken in haste cannot be unheard or forgotten. You may need to protect yourself or to protect others from you. If you are not part of the solution you may be part of the problem.

BEING THERE

The best present you can give your family is your presence. I don't mean just turning up. I mean really being there, take the time to listen and acknowledge your family members. Chose to bring joy to the table.

CORNER CAFÉ has Bobby’s name written all over it

Bobby’s Corner Bondi is a friendly, neighbourhood café, with a great location and ambience. You’ll find it tucked away on the corner of Hastings Pde and Wairoa Ave, North Bondi, just 5 minutes walk from world famous Bondi Beach. What’s lovely about the café is it’s atmosphere. It’s light, airy, cool and spacious with clever outdoor and eating spaces taking advantage of it’s corner position. I could almost feel my tensions going away the minute I sat down.

There is outside seating on the side street and inside a wonderful glass conservatory, with a variety of large and small tables, all perfect for remote workers and naturally with free Wi-Fi. What is it about working in a café that turns a boring job at home into an entertaining job when you’re in company? What I noticed is that everyone comes in to talk to “Bobby” and he always has time to chat and work at the same time…even dogs love Bobby. Don’t be surprised if Bobby looks familiar, he used to be the manager at Rose Bay’s “Sugar & Spoon” Café in Lynne Park. Now, however, he has seized the opportunity to open Bobby’s Corner Bondi at the junction of Hastings Pde and Wairoa Ave. He’s been working flat out ever since, but has never looked back. The area is like a village, where everyone supports one another. Local families, pets, celebrities, workers, computer geeks working on the workstations… all come to Bobby’s Corner Bondi. And it's open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, serving a wide variety of food. Some favourites include:“Bobby’s breakfast” (of course)…home

made beetroot hummus, Danish feta, roasted tomatoes, smashed avo, mushroom, poached egg, hazelnut dukkha, served on sourdough…I’m licking my lips with the thought! Another favourite “Bondi Benny” (has to be a ring-in)..Homemade potato rosti, soft poached eggs, green hollandaise sauce, choice of smoked salmon, bacon or spinach. And, if that’s not enough there’s also warm coconut porridge, with coconut milk, organic mixed quinoa, caramelised banana, berries, honey, crunchy nuts and, not to be overlooked, a large selection of Vegan options. To top all that…Bobby caters and designs events…there is no stopping him! So you can book Bobby’s Corner Bondi for your party, event, or just get together and he will do the lot!. Bobby hopes to open for dinner in the not-too-distant future with live music on weekends.

Gertrude's Gingerbread Cookies

GERTRUDE ADVISES PREPARATION IS THE KEY!

Begin by turning on the oven to 1800C (or 1600C for fanforced ovens), and grease the baking-trays with butter

YOU WILL NEED:

• Electric mixer • Mixing bowl • Your favourite ginger cookie cutters (like heart-shapes, stars, and figures) • White/coloured Icing Pens • Baking trays • Rubber-ended baking spatula • Slotted metal spatula • Metal cooling-rack • Rolling-pin • Baking paper • Well-padded oven-mits (for handling hot trays) • Air-tight storage containers

INGREDIENTS:

350g plain flour 100g brown sugar 100g golden syrup 1 tbs powdered ginger 1 tbs bicarbonate soda 1 egg 150g butter (at room temperature) *extra butter for greasing trays

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a mixing-bowl, using the electric mixer, blend together the butter with the brown sugar to light cream consistency. Add the egg and golden syrup. Slowly sift in flour, powdered ginger and bicarbonate soda. When smooth, use the rubber-ended spatula to tip mixture between two sheets of baking papers, and let cool slightly. With rolling-pin, flatten mixture to approximately 5mm thick. Remove top baking paper, and press in favourite cookie cutters into dough, creating as many cookies as possible. Using the slotted metal spatula, lightly dusted in flour, lift out the cookie-shapes and onto waiting baking-trays, leaving about 2mm space between cookies. Bake the Gingerbread Cookies in the pre-heated oven for 8-10 minutes, then let cool off slightly before transferring cookies with spatula to the metal cooling rack. When cookies are cooled off decorate with your own patterns using the white/coloured Icing pens. After the icing has dried, the cookies can be stored layered on baking paper in air-tight containers at room temperature.

What sort of people can grow out of that? How can they possibly be inspired, challenged and engaged with creativity? 2019 DESIGN AWARDS

Chris Bosse, the founder of LAVA architects, believes in education, and the impact of architecture on children’s creative development. We all have early childhood memories, the first home, the first kindergarden, the first school, the first outing to the playground. What did it looked like, what did it feel like, how did it smell. What did it make me want to do? Did I want to turn around and run the other way, did it make me feel bored, scared, or did it make me feel happy, enthused, and inspired, did it make me want to explore the world around me? I went to a Kindergarden in Stuttgart, Germany, we had a treehouse, a sloping hill, a firepit, a pillow fighting room, a climbing structure, a laboratory and a reading room, these spaces influence me till today. LAVA's designs for the Sydney STORY FACTORY in Redfern and Parramatta are creating spaces to dream, to write, to sing, to let the mind wander and the creative sparks fly. Walls, floors and ceilings are continuous ribbons of wood and colour. The spaces are

filled with inspirational imagery, sculptures, books and objects. The children are let lose to discover their own creativity. The classroom of the future is a visionary concept for sustainable prefabricated ecoclassroom modules to be deployed all over Australia. The children learn within and from nature, technology and culture.

CRACKDOWN ON SHODDY BUILDS Following the disastrous defects which forced the evacuation of the Opal and Mascot Towers, the NSW government has moved to introduce new laws, which will better protect future apartment owners.

The Design and Building Practitioners Act 2019 (NSW) will dramatically increase the accountabilities for builders and designers, including a requirement to register plans for key elements such as fire safety and waterproofing, to ensure they are compliant with the Building Code of Australia. The Design and Building Practitioners Bill 2019 [NSW] (Bill) proposes that a select few builders and designers will need to be registered practitioners and provide a compliance declaration where required. The supporting regulations (which are yet to be developed) may require registered designs and compliance declarations to be electronically lodged. Further to this, the NSW government has advised the changes also allow for the prevention of the issuance of an occupancy certificate or registration of a strata scheme, if serious breaches are believed to have occurred. The Bill also carries a provision that a duty of care is owed to homeowners. This provision would make it easier for those

impacted by shoddy work to sue for compensation however, these reforms will only apply to buildings yet to be constructed. When introducing the Bill, Minister for Better Regulation, Kevin Anderson said it marked a monumental step in the reform of the building and construction industry. “People should feel confident they can enter the housing market in NSW, knowing their home has been designed and built in accordance with the Building Code of Australia, which is what this Bill is designed to do,” said Anderson.

“We are sending a clear message to industry and the wider community that things must change. Let there be no misunderstanding of the NSW Government’s intention to bring confidence back to the high-rise apartment market in NSW.” Failure to comply with the new laws could result in fines up to $330,000 or even the possibility of up to two years imprisonment.

Engineers Australia believes the Berejiklian government hasn’t gone far enough with the Bill. They’re calling for a compulsory

registration scheme for all engineers, rather than a select few, arguing it is in the best interest of consumers and the community. They would like to see a separate engineers registration bill introduced to Parliament in 2020, with registration a pre-requisite to practicing as an engineer in NSW. Beach ‘clowns’ warned not to fake it for Bondi Rescue reality TV show The producers of the Bondi Rescue reality TV show have warned beachgoers that they’ll face prosecution if they try “faking it” for the cameras.

Waverley Council has just approved the shooting of the 15th series of the hugely popular program this summer for a fee of $115,000 plus 5% of net profits.

Rescue has done a great job spreading an international message about staying between the between the flags,” he said.

Bondi Rescue is produced by Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder (CJZ). It has been in production since 2005 and is one of Australia’s most successful TV exports, screened in over 100 countries.

Stars of the show are Waverley Council lifeguards, some of whom have become international celebrities as they rescue stricken swimmers and feature in other dramas, from shark sightings to beach brawls. Not all the lifeguards are buoyed up with joy about the Bondi Rescue crew coming back. However, a report to council said “the majority are in support of the show continuing.” Why aren’t all the lifeguards supporting the return of the Rescue crew? One possible reason was put forward by Mark Cotter, immediate past president of North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. “There’ve been issues where people have put their hand up to get a ride on a jet ski or a ride in a rubber bucket,” Mr Cotter told Eastern Suburbs Life. Mr Cotter, principal of Ceramic and Implant Design in Edgecliff, added that he was overall in favour of the Bondi Rescue crew coming back this summer. “Bondi

Sustainable salon cuts the mustard!

Edmond and Giovanna Lahoud, are key fixtures in Australia’s opal and gemstone scene. They touch every facet of the industry from opal mining and jewellery manufacture to wholesaling and retailing gems and minerals both nationally and internationally.

Edmond worked alongside his father to learn the jewellery trade, but it was only when he ventured out on his own to manufacture jewellery for other jewellers, that fate introduced him to a man with a shoebox of rough boulder opal. “It was so beautiful” says Edmond, “that I was absolutely mesmerised and fell in love with the stone.”

Walkabout BONDI BEACH with Ruth

In this edition of ESL, I head down Campbell Pde, starting from Bondi Beach Public School heading towards The Icebergs pool, and onto the Bondi Beach promenade, a full circuit back to the school. Along the way, I point out historical buildings and artistic finds. So come along and walk with me and enjoy some of the wonderful sights along Australia's most famous beach.

It was sold in 1967, and it went through several subsequent owners. It became a grungy pub and a favoured haunt for bikies. Ultimately, after much complaining about various disturbances from Bondi residents, the Council closed it down. The building was renovated and turned into The Bondi Astra Retirement Village in 1984. The Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club, 1929 owes its origins to the desire of a band of dedicated local lifesavers who wished to maintain their fitness during the winter months. They formed the Bondi Icebergs Winter Swimming Club and drew up a constitution and elected office bearers. Included in the constitution was a rule that to maintain membership it was mandatory that swimmers compete on three Sundays out of four for a period of five years.

Bondi Beach Public School is the start of my Bondi Beach walk. It holds a place in my heart, having attended there. The site was acquired in 1916. Other sites were investigated but eventually the school buildings were erected here. The main building opened in 1923. Now a hub for organic and weekend markets, and unlike my day, where we ate finger buns and drank milk that had been standing in the playground for hours in the sun, the children are more healthy and grow vegetables and look after chooks.

The Hotel Bondi is a landmark on Campbell Pde. It was built from 1915 to the 1920s and was designed by E. Lindsay Thompson. It combines Italianate, Federation and free Classical elements and has been described as an "important landmark building in the Bondi Beach townscape." Today it's a first class hotel.

Walking past souvenir and fast food eateries, memories flood back of iconic 70's fixtures along the parade; Vallis' Milk Bar, Flying Pieman and Bates Milk Bar. Bates Milk Bar opened 1951 and closed 2001, it looked was like an American milk bar. But what lingers in my mind, was the magnificent malted milkshakes served in metal cups..Aah, those childhood memories! A nice diversion in your walk is strolling down Gould St, a trendy backstreet filled with designer and up-and-coming design shops. Then onto Hall St, once home to the Hakoah Club, which closed its doors in 2009, it filled an important inter-generational role and provided recreational and cultural facilities over many decades to the community of Bondi, sadly missed..it is now Adina Apartment Hotel, and this wall-to-wall glass structure towers over Bondi Beach. Hall St has a variety of eateries from all over the world, and is buzzing with tourists, locals and backpackers all week.

Heading back, I walk down Bondi Beach famous promenade passing the Graffiti Wall which has been in operation since the late 70's and features a mix of street and contemporary art with strong social and political messages throughout the decades. Sometimes, causing controversy.

A competition was run by Waverley Council in 1923 to improve Bondi Beach and Park. The competition was won by architectural firm Robertson and Marks. The Bondi Pavilion had extensive dressing cubicles, which were originally in two courtyards on the ground floor of the building. One courtyard was for men and the other for women, and the individual changing booths were constructed in rows in each courtyard. It also had Turkish and hotwater baths, shops, a ballroom, cabaret theatre, an auditorium and a cafe. The Bondi Pavilion was opened at the end of 1929. Today, Bondi Pavilion is still a community centre. It has a theatre, a gallery and rehearsal room, meeting and function rooms. Many cultural and film festivals are held at the building, and shops, changing rooms and toilets are still available to the public.

During World War II the building was taken over by the Government for use by the air force and later by the British “wrens” (Women’s Royal Naval Service). It’s Long Island Bar had eight taps, and was one of the largest in Sydney. 'Summer of the Seventeenth Doll', starring Ernest Borgnine and Angela Lansbury, was filmed there in 1959.

According to the 2016 census of population, there were 11,656 residents in Bondi Beach. In Bondi Beach, 45.3% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were England 8.7%, New Zealand 3.4%, South Africa 2.3%, United States 2% and Brazil 2%. 64.8% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Spanish 3.5%, French 2.4%, Portuguese 2.1%, Italian 1.9% and Russian 1.7%.

The crescent-shaped Bondi Beach measures about 1km long. It has an area of 1.22sq km.

3. BUSIEST DAY ON RECORD

The busiest summer day for Bondi Beach was when its estimated the number of beach goers exceeds 40,000.

3. THE MOST INFAMOUS DAY AT BONDI BEACH

In 1938, on a day known as 'Black Sunday' some 200 people were swept into the sea in one moment after several huge waves hit people gathered on the sand bar. Five died and dozens were injured in the deadliest day on record at the beach. Earlier in the day lifeguards had pulled 74 people from the surf in one hour.

4. RECORDED SHARK ATTACKS AT BONDI BEACH

Between 1990 and 2017 there have been a total of 3 unprovoked shark attacks at Bondi Beach. None have been fatal. The beach is protected by shark nets, air surveillance teams, and lifeguards.

5. HOTTEST DAY ON BONDI BEACH

The hottest day on the beach happened in January, 2018 when a scorching 47.3 0 C was recorded. That beat the previous record from 2013 of 45.8 0 C. In 2007, the Guinness World Record for the largest swimsuit photo shoot was set at Bondi Beach, with 1,010 women wearing bikinis taking part.

7. WI-FI AT BONDI BEACH Next to the Pavilion is The Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club which is Australia's oldest Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1907. The clubs aim is to ensure "No Lives Lost" at Bondi Beach and is a volunteer organisation that patrols Bondi Beach from October to April every year.

The Astra on the cnr of Sir Thomas Mitchell Rd and Campbell Pde was built in 1880, called The Cliff House, it was demolished in 1920. The current building, originally The Hotel International, opened in 1926. It was sold to newspaper proprietor Joynton Smith, who renamed it The Astra. The Casino Bar on the first floor offered fine dining for 100 guests, and it was very popular for Christmas dinners. The actor Peter Finch is said to have been a waiter there.

What's the Buzz? GIANT SUNFISH SEEN OFF BONDI BEACH

In Nov, 2019 one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep made a rare appearance off the shores of Bondi Beach. A father and son were snorkelling and spear fishing when they encountered a 2.5m-long sunfish. Aaron Puckeridge said he was drifting about 30m off North Bondi Point in 10m of water when his dad yelled out. Professor Culum Brown, head of the Fish Lab at Macquarie University, said it was very unusual for the deep ocean fish to come so close to shore. "The only time they would really come into shallow waters, is specifically to be cleaned," Professor Brown told 9News. Source: 9News

Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, said APAs provide Council Rangers and the police with a means of deterring behaviour that may be or become anti-social or unsafe, or which may otherwise impact the amenity of beach/park users or residents.

NEW WAVERLEY COUNCILSPONSORED POLICE VEHICLE

Waverley Council and the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command (PAC) have unveiled a new Council-sponsored police vehicle. The Eastern Suburbs PAC will use the Council-sponsored vehicle for crime prevention activities and community engagement as part of a three-year sponsorship agreement. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the police vehicle sponsorship program is just one of the ways Council and Police are working together to prevent crime in the east. “Waverley Council is pleased that we can assist the police in working with the community to keep crime to the low rates that it is,” Mayor Masselos said. Council considered the feasibility of introducing a ‘trial’ easing of restrictions in Bronte Park and Bondi Park. Following feedback received from key stakeholders, Council will not be going ahead with a trial.

As you leave the specialist’s rooms, it is not your physical, but your financial health that dominates your thoughts: How will I keep up the mortgage repayments? Welcome to the cold, hard world of mortgage stress. Its usual cause is loss of work income. Also coming into play are a number of other factors. “Debt, interest rates and relationship breakdown are common contributing factors to mortgage stress,” says financial planner Brendan Whitehouse, of BRW Financial Group. Brendan, who specialises in retirement financial planning, says all too many over-65-year-olds are still paying off mortgages and shouldering other debts. “They are not prepared for the unexpected.” Meanwhile, Brendan says he has noticed a tendency among the younger adult demographic to be over-confident in the ability to repay loans. “A lot of people are walking a bit of a tightrope. They can only repay their loans provided they keep their jobs, don’t get sick and don’t get hit with any large, unexpected bills.” Here are five simple steps you can take to guard against mortgage stress casting its dark shadow over your life:

1.BUILD UP A BUFFER

A cash reserve in a mortgage offset account will provide a buffer that can be drawn upon to meet your loan repayments if you become ill or are off work for other reasons.

2. TAKE OUT PERSONAL INSURANCES

It’s important to ensure your income is not compromised due to certain events beyond your control. One way to do this is to ensure you have adequate personal insurances. Key examples include

Critical Illness Insurance, Total and Permanent Disability Insurance and Income Protection Insurance.

3. TAKE OUT MORTGAGE PROTECTION INSURANCE

Many lenders offer insurance when you take out a home loan that covers the mortgage (often up to a specified amount and for a particular period of time) if you die, become disabled or your employment ends involuntarily.

4. FIX THE INTEREST RATE

Interest rates are low at the moment, but that could suddenly change. Fixing the interest rate on your home loan can provide protection. The downside is there are often restrictions on making additional payments into a fixed rate loan, which would limit your capacity to build up a buffer. “Some people find a combination of fixed and variable rate loans works best,” Brendan says. “That way, additional repayments can be made into the variable rate portion of the debt.”

A CAR LIKE ALICE: CITROЁN 2CV

It was a very light car with tightly reduced target weights. Boulanger even created a department especially to weigh each component and if necessary redesign it to lose weight without jeopardising functionality. Finally, it was done and the 2CV was ready for the Paris show – which was cancelled when WWII began. Boulanger wanted the 250 pre-production cars to be hidden immediately so the German’s would not see them. He was adamant that this car would not be used by the enemy. Some were buried in secret, one was disguised as a utility, some were destroyed. It was thought for a long time that they had all disappeared, but it turned out that none of them were lost. In fact, 3x4-door prototypes were found in an attic in the Citroën testing factory, hidden by workers without Boulanger’s permission. They felt there was a weight of history here that should not be lost.

Alice is a bit of an eye catcher for sure, it is hard to miss her on the street. It is certainly hard to miss her when she is in the workshop. Alice has exceptional provenance beginning with the TPV, “Tres Petite Voiture” meaning very small car created in 1936, which after many prototypes became Alice – the 2CV and disappeared from sight for many years. This story begins with the development of a car especially for people who had never owned a car & could never afford a car, particularly farmers. In 1934 Michelin, who owned Citroën, had a market survey done. Citroën used the results to prepare a design for a “low priced, rugged “umbrella on four wheels.” The task of the “rugged umbrella’ was to transport 4 people and 50kg of farm goods to market at 50km/hr and cross muddy, unpaved roads and fields. Part of the requirement was that people must be able to drive eggs across a freshly ploughed field without breaking the eggs. The brief for the design & production team was to build it secretly. Pierre Boulanger gave the project to Andre Lefebvre. By the start of 1938, 20 TPV prototypes had been built and by 1990, 9 billion had been sold. Here’s the “backstory” of Alice.

Citroën produced trucks for the Wehrmacht – but in a deliberate “go slow” manner. Going slow was not enough resistance, so the notch on the dip stick was deliberately put in the wrong place. The result was engine seizures. The Gestapo put his name on a list of ‘Most important enemies of the Reich.” So the TPV was developed in secret to keep it out of the hands of the invaders. Boulanger would not allow his new dream to go the way of the VW Beetle. By 1939, 250 cars had been produced in secret; the TPV was ready to be shown at the 1939 Paris Motor Show, and had been renamed the 2CV. To change the TPV into the 2CV required 47 experimental Protypes. It was always low cost and low maintenance; that was a given. it had an aircooled engine originally delivering 9HP. It had low fuel consumption, extreme longtravel suspension (used on dune buggies to soften the effects of rough off-road conditions). It came with a canvas sunroof the width of the car that rolled back to become a sun-roof. The gap in the roof also allowed for odd sized loads that may be longer than the car itself, it also enabled the later development of a van type of 2CV. The early ones had one headlight which was all that was required in French Automobile Law.

Pierre originally studied fine arts, Flaminio was a sculptor, as well as, an engineer and Andre was an aviation engineer, a race car driver and engineer and his speciality was chassis design, with a strong interest in the contact between the tyres and the road surface.

They used aluminium and magnesium parts, had a water-cooled flat twin engines with front-wheel drive. The seats were hammocks hung on wires from the roof. The suspension system looked like a child’s jungle gym – a series of arms connected to torsion bars under the rear seat: a bar for the front axle, one for the rear axle, an intermediate bar for each side and an overload bar on each side to carry the weight of the original brief of 50kgs of produce. The front axle was connected to its own torsion bar by cable.

Boulanger was the president of Citroën and managed the Michelin Company. When the Germans occupied France he refused to communicate with German authorities except through an intermediary.

From the beginning, the TPV had the new Michelin radial tyre. Boulanger managed Michelin and put the newly developed radials on the Citroën prototypes. The car ran about 95 miles to the gallon.

Interesting to discover the background of the three people who built the TPV: Pierre Boulanger (French), Flaminio Bertoni (Italian) and Andre Lefebvre (French).

It appears that the German army did find one and sent it off to Ferdinand Porsche who did not see it’s uses and functionality and Boulanger refused to talk to him. Porsche said it was a soapbox jalopy, and was not interested in it. It’s unlikely there would ever have been a bright yellow Alice if he had been able to really “see” what he was looking at. Finally, when wartime air had cleared, the 47 prototypes became the 2CV and went into production called the “deux Chevauxvapeur” literally “two steam horse, two tax horsepower. (The taxable horsepower was a system to tax cars in France in those days.) It went to the Paris Car Show and finally the car for 4 people and 50kgs of luggage met the public. Ultimately Citroën produced 9 billion 2CVs with a number of models. It also kept changing through the years. Autocar wrote in 1953 “the extraordinary ingenuity of this design, makes it undoubtedly the most original since the Ford Model T.” It was called “a car like no other.” Setright in his wonderful pompous and esoteric style said of the 2CV “the most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car; it’s a car of remorseless rationality.’ An American comic asked "did it come with a can opener"? Alice is much more stylish than any of the prototypes. Alice was given 3 side windows, it runs on unleaded fuel (of course), she has an extra tail light, rectangular headlights, two individual seats instead of just one bench seat, and Alice has a single-spoke steering wheel and ash trays! Alice came into her own during the oil crisis, and became a youth lifestyle statement.

It is a classic car in its own class and once again, in this classic story we recognise the names. Alice was almost lost in wartime, only Boulanger’s bravery and foresight saved her. We also see that car racing plays a big part in the classic demographic. Alice is a purpose built intelligent car that looks like a large matchbox car. It has everything about it that makes it enjoyable. It is well loved by its owners.

Local choir leaving for New York

Sydney Jewish Choral Society (SJCS) is a community on the move. This 45-strong group has sung in places from Canberra to Blackheath, at venues from recording studios to the Opera House stage, and at events from the Mo Awards to intercultural choir festivals. And the next stop is New York! SJCS is ramping up the pace in Randwick, where rehearsals are held weekly. “We’ve begun rehearsing for a performance at Carnegie Hall in February next year,” says Chairperson Anne Spira.

She explains: “We’ve been invited to perform in New York, in a Distinguished Concert Singers International event with around 200 other international singers, on Feb 17, 2020. We’ll be performing Bernstein’s 'Chichester Psalms', which we performed last year at The Great Synagogue, to honour the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.”

Choir members are of all ages and come from a variety of countries, cultures and musical backgrounds, but all are linked by their love of song. SJCS performed at a Wolper Wellbeing Forum on ‘The healing power of choir singing’, where health professionals attested to the physical and emotional benefits of group singing. “We welcome our next challenge,” Spira says, “to sing in New York with a community of singers." "Our first experience of large-group singing was inspiring. In 2016, we sang with 900 others in a White Ribbon Day event organised by Hummingsong Choirs, of Australia’s Got Talent fame."

This was the 10th successive Family Fun Day, at Memorial Reserve, Anzac Pde; thanks to people and businesses in the Randwick LGA, it was a 10/10 event. The day featured rides, craft activities, Matraville’s Got Talent show, a community water fight, giveaways and more. People said, “It’s a good atmosphere”, “The mob’s had a great day!” and “It’s great to be out here with the community”.

Plan for 40 km/h speed limit for all Waverley LGA

Waverley Council wants to slow down drivers to a sedate 40 km/h per hour throughout the entire Local Government Area. A meeting of Waverley’s Strategic Planning and Development Committee was presented with a report urging the blanket slow-down following a study by a firm of consultants. The report suggests the move will reduce crashes on key routes such as Bondi Rd, which has the highest incidence of crashes of any road in the municipality, followed by Bronte Rd and MacPherson St.

An upgrade of its memorial garden, jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government, was recently completed and includes new native hedging and removal of its fence to better integrate the memorial with the surrounding parkland, helping to ensure the service and sacrifice of our former and current military personnel is well remembered.

Many local roads in Darling Point, Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Watsons Bay will be closed to traffic from 3pm on New Year’s Eve, although vehicle access will be available to residents and their guests in affected areas until 6pm. School holidays activities

Each school holidays, Woollahra Council’s libraries at Double Bay, Paddington and Watsons Bay host a variety of fun activities for children. Visit www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/library/ whats_on/school_holidays for dates, times and locations.

And quiet back streets will not escape the slow-down. They are seen as prime targets for so-called ‘traffic calming treatments.’ Bitzios Consulting, which carried out the study into the 40km/h plan, maps out a bold vision for a proliferation of flat top road humps, landscaped kerb blisters, refuge islands, raised pedestrian crossings and other calming measures designed to slow down drivers, some of whom are likely to be less than calm as they navigate the new streetscapes. The Bitzios Consulting report admits that some of the measures proposed in its vision for a slowed-down Waverey LGA are not bicycle-friendly. In fact, they can create dangerous conditions for cyclists because they “create pinch points in the traffic flow where cyclists are forced to interface with vehicular traffic.” Another group of road users likely to be less than enamoured with the new measures are bus drivers and passengers. A dozen flat top humps and raised pedestrian crossings are proposed along bus routes. A lot of the residents living along calmeddown roads are also likely to be unenthusiastic about the plan. The Bitzios Consulting report concedes that that noise is a consideration. So is parking, or lack thereof, with the majority of calming measures designated not parking- friendly.

Councillors warned about social media postings Waverley councillors have been told not to over-reach their responsibilities when they make postings on social media platforms. The warning came during discussion of the council’s new social media guidelines at a meeting of Waverley’s Operations and Community Services Committee chaired by Mayor John Wakefield.

A report tabled at the meeting said it was important that “if a Councillor is speaking to the media outside of being delegated to do so on behalf of Council, that they are clear their views are their own personal views and not that of Council.” Councillors aren’t the only Waverley officebearers making inappropriate use of platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. It seems some of the council’s staff may have been making less-than-appropriate postings online. The report said the key message to staff was “to understand and comply with appropriate behaviour when associating with or representing Council on social media platforms.”

RANDWICK

Rooftop cinema at Randwick Ritz approved

Councillors have approved the operation of a 77-seat outdoor cinema on the roof of the Randwick Ritz. The art deco cinema’s new owners will operate the rooftop cinema during the warmer months, subject to a number of strict conditions from Randwick Council. To guard against noise nuisance for residents living near the cinema complex in St Pauls St, filmgoers will wear wireless headphones. “There must be no amplified noise, music or the like broadcast before, during intermissions or after films outside of the building envelope,” Randwick Council says. In addition, the licenced premises will only serve drinks to rooftop patrons in plastic glasses, which will further minimise the chances of noise nuisance. Meanwhile, the cinema will have to comply with strict lighting conditions to ensure nearby residences don’t find night turning to day. The outdoor cinema hours are restricted to 6-11pm, Thursday to Saturday. The cinema under the stars is likely to be a successful operation with minimum impact on the locals, because the new owners, Eddie and Lindy Tamir, have solid experience delivering the outdoor cinema experience.

Cemetery expansion

Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park has set its beady eye on a pocket of scrubland at the edge of Prince of Wales Drive, alongside the port. The Memorial Park wants to transform the four hectares into a lawn cemetery, with room for 3000 graves, or 6000 plots if there were “double depth graves.” In addition, there’d be a memorial plaques for people who’ve been cremated. The site at Bumborah Pt is bounded by Military Rd to the north, Yarra Bay to the south, Prince of Wales Drive and the Port Botany freight and logistics precinct to the west and the existing Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park. According to independent Randwick councillor Noel D’Souza, “The land is contaminated with asbestos. This is an opportunity to clean it up and turn it into something useful.” The Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park has been trying to expand for years. First it had its eye on the Chinese market gardens next to Bunnerong Rd. That was opposed by the council and community and the plan was shelved, but remains on the backburner. The proposal for Bumborah Point is far less contentious because it doesn’t get a lot of use. But local greenies are against the plan because it will involve the removal of substantial stands of Eastern Suburbs Banksia. Above all, it’s another encroachment for Yarra Bay locals, currently in the throes of a David and Goliath-type battle with the NSW government over plans for a cruise ship terminal. Banksias or bodies? That will be one of the questions for Randwick Council as it considers the application from Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park.

EASTERN SUBURBS BUSES

The NSW Government decision to privatise Eastern Suburbs buses has angered many locals who do not wish to see the loss of services that occurred in other locations following privatisation. I was recently invited by the union to attend our local bus depots to talk to staff about how privatisation will impact their work and our services. Unfortunately, the STA denied me entry to the depot to talk to staff in a clear attempt to stifle arguments against privatisation and silence any critique of the government. This resulted in a public rally outside the depot of more than 300 people. Along with being your local member, I am a fifth generation local. I catch these buses down Bronte Rd, Carrington Rd and Clovelly Rd to get to the shops and to my office, as well as to and from the city when parliament is sitting. Along with health and education, these are services that must be provided by the state government. I invite all my constituents to join me in holding the Government accountable for the provision of this service.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST I recently hosted a school leadership function, where school captains and vice captains of all the high schools in my electorate came together for a networking breakfast at Coogee Legion Club.

It was fantastic to watch the students connect and discuss issues of concern to them, in particular youth mental health and climate change. Our community should be very proud of our local leaders of tomorrow.
