Jan 1, 2020 welcomed the start of a new year and a new decade, but with bushfire smoke haze and the plight of fellow Australian’s on their mind most in the Eastern Suburbs felt ill at ease about celebrating while others were suffering. The result was a sombre and reflective New Year where people took stock, counted blessings and started thinking about the possibilities of a very different future, maybe more focused on pulling together rather than getting ahead. The mood is now lightening, and the promise of rain is beginning to raise spirits but there’s still a feeling that the year(s) ahead will be more challenging than those of the past. However, as always, challenges bring out the best in Australians, and a quiet determination to succeed despite obstacles. In that vein we wish our readers, contributors,

advertisers and sponsors a warm welcome to the new decade and a happy and prosperous 2020. For our part, we are pleased bring you Edition 16 of Eastern Suburbs Life with details of what’s happening in the area as well as local council news, community news (very musical this time with news of the Sydney Jewish Choral Society are off to New York in Feb, and an Organ Scholarship for Pamina Milenkovic), five pages of Bondi Buzz news, a story of 'Two Minis' (one 40 years older than the other), and the inspiring success story an immigrant from the UK who started her own business at the age of 19. BUSHFIRE RECOVERY APPEAL Our thoughts are with all those who have suffered loss of loved ones, homes and the source of income to help them recover. With the loss of lives and over 2,000 properties almost everyone we speak to knows someone who has been in danger. However, even when the smoke haze lifts there is a solemn awareness that the bushfires affect everyone in Australia, not just those immediately involved. And not only people. We hear of almost 5 million hectares of land affected by fires (as much as in the February fires of 1851) and reel at the thought of over 800 million animals lost (excluding frogs, fish and invertebrates) as well as hundreds of billions of insects. Some species face extinction even including species yet undiscovered.

But we also hear of heroism and self sacrifice, of recovery and rebirth and know that in the midst of all the suffering life will go on. In interview after interview we see people determined to rebuild their homes, their fortunes and their communities. This note is about those people and the Firies who risked life and limb to help save them. The bushfires will eventually come to an end, but the road to recovery is huge and

EAR WAX

A sticky issue

your Sydney hearing experts

Impacted or excessive ear wax is a common condition and affects one in 20 adults. Not everyone has the same type or amount of ear wax.

MERREN DAVIES

The consistency, colour, and amount of ear wax varies from person to person. Some people have very moist sticky ear wax, and for others it is dry and flaky. For some people an excess build-up of ear wax is a one-off event and can be sorted in one wax removal appointment. For others, the build-up of excessive ear wax happens often and they benefit from regular ear wax appointments. Having itchy ears is not normal and may indicate a build up of wax or a need to clear the ear of debris. The following factors promote the build-up of excessive ear wax and debris in the ear canal: • Use of cotton buds, as this pushes wax down further into the ear canal. • Bony growths in the ear canal (exostosis) common in Sydney and caused by swimming in cold water. • Regular use of hearing aids, earbuds or earphones as the wax gets caught behind these. • Naturally hairy or curved ear canals. • Dusty environments promote ear wax production.

INCREASE YOUR ENERGY AND VITALITY WITH KINESIOLOGY • Sensitivities to foods and foreign substances • Environmental stressors • Strength, flexibility and balance • Mental focus, concentration, memory • Learning in kids and adults • Emotional wellbeing and motivation • Vitality and energy • Digestion and nutrient absorption • Sleep disorders • Addictions “Kinesiology is suitable for any age. It's not just about testing the strength of a muscle, it can be very subtle to sensitive responses by the nervous system” says David. “Kinesiology is a non-invasive method of using the muscles by testing, or monitoring, to get feedback from your body (bio-electric system) and subconscious to indicate where stresses are within its different systems.” “Your body and your innate intelligence will give feedback as to what it needs and the appropriate techniques that will help gain awareness of knowledge to enhance your energy and start the healing processes." "This may involve gentle touch, tapping,

massage, testing for life stressors, diet, supplements and counselling or guidance.” David originally worked in mechanical engineering as a designer. But had a deeper desire to give and help people, so moved to the natural therapies industry and became a remedial massage therapist, working for many years with chiropractors and physiotherapists. There he noticed a lot of clients had more going on in their lives emotionally and physically than could be treated with just massage and other manual techniques. He decided implement Kinesiology, and trained in a Diploma of Professional Kinesiology Practice (PKP), which is an internationally recognised. PKP Kinesiology has a large data base of treatment techniques, including those used in Applied Kinesiology by Chiropractors, but incorporates the clients emotion into the process to give lasting results. David has also treated many children using Kinesiology and says, “Children really respond well as their minds are willing to absorb new things and they often have less stresses than adults. It improves their ability

to learn, focus and concentrate and can even reduce dyslexic tendencies." "Additionally, the process is fun, interactive and dynamic, so they really fun with it.” With so many benefits it seems that Kinesiology is for everyone, so why not give it a try. As David says “You don’t have to be unwell to get great benefits from Kinesiology!”

Do's & Dont's for Beautiful skin

THE GOLDEN RULE

Make sure you always remove your makeup before going to bed. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/ or blackheads. Don’t forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin.

SUN & SKIN

Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Don’t skip the sunscreen, whether it's cloudy or cold outside. If you’re heading to a beach lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins.

SWEAT IT OUT!

Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after

BEAUTY 5

working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block. Don’t skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimise oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturise the skin.

BEAUTY SLEEP

Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you - it sags and you get bags.

H2O TO THE RESCUE

Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eat fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry and grapefruit. Don’t ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

HEALTHY HABITS

Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

PROPERTY RUNS IN TRACEY'S BLOOD

Tracey has built a life around house hunting and renovating. It’s a passion that she got from her parents from a very young age.

and asked to buy the stone off the owners. They said yes, and the crane company my dad worked for transported the stone to my plot, where I had stonemasons dress the stone and then had the house built out of it."

“By the time I was 14 I’d lived in 11 different houses,” she says, laughing. “All my mum and dad did was buy-renovate."

Tracey's family later moved to Australia and settled in Sydney. Tracey continued to be consumed by the property bug and she completed the Real Estate Institute Course.

At 19, Tracey bought her first house in Leeds, UK, using savings from her jobs as a cinema usherette and travel agent, along with a staff bank loan. “There was this derelict terrace sitting there for years,” Tracey says. “I called up the council and asked who owned it and they said they do, I offered them £5000, and they accepted it, then they gave me a grant for £7000 because it had no windows or a bathroom. A year later, I sold it for £16,500, without using a real estate agent and without having spent any of my own money on the renovation." At 20, she purchased a 250-year-old former Gentlemen’s Temperance Hall for £27,000. Again, approaching the council, Tracey converted it to a huge house. “I sold it three years later for £105,000.” she says. The next project on Tracey’s agenda: Buying a 700sq ft plot of land near the centre of Leeds and building a house. “There was an old vicarage being demolished and I knocked on the door

Meanwhile, she found herself helping friends buy and renovate properties in Sydney and she began building up her own Sydney residential property portfolio. Tracey uses her property purchase and renovation acumen to run an incredibly successful business that helps her clients find the right property at the right price. Tracey is a Buyer’s Agent, but that doesn’t do justice to the passion, determination and skill Tracey puts into her role. “When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, having so much passion gives you so much energy, how can you run a successful business without energy. I work 7 days a week and love every minute of it. I even love auctions I’m standing right up the front with the auctioneer, totally controlling the auction from the very beginning, I’m up there, facing the other bidders, opening the first bid the second the auctioneer asks, instantly smashing any bid that comes in with total confidence and reading their

US S RA FACT: Double Bay was called Keltie Cove before 1821. The present day name comes from the two geographical bays between Point Piper and Darling Point. It became a place to be seen in the 60s for its’ glamourous social set and luxury lifestyle. My Double Bay love affair started on a wintry evening trip for ice cream in 1992, the year I arrived in Sydney. Shocked by the Aussie tradition of frozen treats on a cold night (are you serious?), I was not so keen, but I could see from the sparkle in my friend’s eyes, I would have to experience it for myself. We queued in the cold outside a "Double Bay institution", French Riviera, among the hungry buzzing crowd. Opened in 1980, by Jean-Paul Pulcet, ‘The Riviera’ serves up

Speaking to Tracey, she is sharp with a great sense of humour, oozes confidence, she is very friendly and full of energy, but at the same time, you can feel her powerful personality, professionalism and just know she is no pushover from the second you talk to her… definitely someone to have on your side! oh-so-rich and creamy confections that Jean-Paul himself has handmade for almost 40 years! His love for ice cream is long lasting - so is my love for Double Bay. For me it was love at the first sight. From window shopping through elegant shop displays of glamorous clothes and luxury jewellery and designer homewares, to continental streets with flashy cars and alfresco dining. What a scene! I made up my mind immediately that I would open my own boutique in Double Bay one day. I found work with Fashion Designer, Stuart Membery’s Double Bay studio and learned to drink and fuel my love for coffee months later, while I studied fashion at East Sydney TAFE. Little known fact: it was a homesick Hungarian, who escaped from a war-torn country, who introduced café culture to the suburb. The first espresso café in the neighbourhood was George’s opened in 1956. No wonder my Budapest born husband’s favourite coffee is espresso. (And no, I didn’t meet him by placing a bunch of bananas in my basket in Woollies on a Wednesday night – as the flirtatious code was – or is – of the day!) Among the new and trendy eateries were, the long-standing '21 Espresso' and my favourite, 'The Cosmopolitan Double Bay'. Their goulash soup and french toast and crepe kept me going back for more. Although my fashion dreams fizzled and many boutiques have gone, my love for

Double Bay hasn’t changed. Like a fine wine, my affections have matured, I see beyond the glitz and glam.

TRANSVAAL AVE, DOUBLE BAY

The beauty of life enjoyed in this ‘Ritzy’ harbourside suburb, has eternally won my heart. However, apart from the high quality shopping, I now know it's the people who live and shop in Double Bay, who make it what it is and the reason I love Double Bay. As a result of my continued affection for Double Bay, I organise social gatherings for the community - To attend the next event call 0414 690 218.

How to choose the right window coverings Energy efficiency is a huge priority for homeowners these days, but maintaining a constant temperature in your home could be as simple as choosing the right window coverings. “For all the talk about the most energy efficient use of air conditioners and heaters, it needs to be said that combining the right external and internal window coverings makes it possible to maintain a constant and comfortable temperature without the need to use electricity,” said Jenny Brown, National Marketing Manager, Luxaflex® Window Fashions. Adding Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Shades to your windows is like coating them with insulation. Luxaflex® Duette® Architella® Ménage Shades are the most advanced energy efficient option available, delivering triple-honeycomb construction with six layers of fabric and five insulation air pockets. This reduces the need to use artificial heating in winter with the Shade acting as a barrier to stop the warm air from quickly escaping through the glass. “Combine your Duette Architella Ménage Shades with an External Awning to block the heat of the sun from hitting your windows in summer and you have the perfect solution for year-round comfort,” continued Jenny. In order to use your Duette Shades in the most efficient way possible, consider new PowerView™ Motorisation. The intuitive PowerView™ App for Apple® and Android™

mobile devices allows you to set scenes and have them operate automatically – for example the Duette Shade can automatically be raised in the morning to invite in the morning sun and lowered at lunchtime to keep that warm air in for the rest of the day. PowerView can also be operated at the touch of a button via the Pebble™ Remote, which is available in seven colours and ergonomically designed for ease of use, offering the perfect fusion of form and function. Continue to adjust your window treatments for temperature, privacy and security from across the room or across the world, using the RemoteConnect™ feature in the PowerView App. “Doing your research on what products are available and how they could work for your home is worth the effort. The dollar savings are significant and most importantly, allows you to live comfortably year round for very little ongoing effort,” concluded Jenny. A Style of Shade is the local Double Bay, Luxaflex® Window fashions gallery. Run by Mark Treister and his team, they can help you with any queries on how best to maximise the look and style of the windows in your home.

WELCOME TO THE BEACH ART GALLERY On the wall of the promenade above Bondi Beach is an ever-changing art exhibition, with murals by talented artists making stunning visual statements on beach culture and Australian society.

Smoky Bondi Beach

The sea wall gallery is managed by Waverley Council, which allows local and international artists to display their work for six months. Two murals have been designated by the council as permanent – an artwork commemorating ANZAC soldiers and a haunting image of a girl with a frangipani in her hair, dedicated to a local called Chloe who lost her life in the Bali Bombings. Waverley Council has just drawn up new guidelines for artists wanting to use the wall as a showcase for their work, with a new online application system and clarification about the kind of images that will be allowed. “The history of street art on the Bondi Sea Wall dates back to the 1960s,” said a report on the new guidelines by the council’s visual arts co-ordinator Elizabeth Reidy. “Today the Sea Wall continues to contribute to the energy and character of Bondi Beach.” An explosion of street art in the 1980s saw the wall come live with spray-painted images. At that point the wall wasn’t an official mural space, resulting in a cat-andmouse game between local police and graffiti artists. Then in the late 1980s, a proposal was put forward by local youth organisation WAYS to create a community wall to channel the work of budding young artists. Waverley Council approved the plan but it did not start to formally vet the artworks with an application process until about ten years ago. It has been reported that before legalisation of the wall, graffiti removal was costing Waverley Council $400,000 a year, which then dropped to just $60,000. The latest crop of murals show a move away from spray-painted artwork to brushpainted and unauthorised murals. In August, last year there was controversy over a stencilled mural by Luke Cornish. It showed two dozen Border Force ‘soldiers’ in paramilitary/riot gear. Above the ominous image, the words “WELCOME TO BONDI’ were lettered in Soviet-style font. Waverley councillors voted narrowly in favour of keeping the Cornish mural. Late that night, after the meeting, the work was destroyed by a vandal armed with a paint roller. Want to find out more about the Sea Wall murals and the artists behind them? Visit the bondigraffiti.com site, which has pictures of beachside art going back to the 1980s.

As with all Australians our thoughts are with those directly affected by the bushfires and the accompanying drought. They are nothing new to Australia, but the scale is unprecedented and has impacted the enjoyment of visitors, residents and those working in Bondi. Despite this, every effort has been made to welcome and entertain our local and overseas visitors and make their visit to Australia’s most famous beach as enjoyable as possible. They have been able to visit the local Bondi Market, attend the Openair Cinema, enjoy the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk and gaze upon the Bondi Beach Sea Art Wall. Sadly for them though, they have not been able to enjoy $25 membership of the Bondi Icebergs Club. That, as we have been reminded by club member Garry Hardaker, is a privilege reserved for local residents of postcodes 2026, 2022 and 2024. They, like everyone else, are however, entitled to free “poolside” access if they wish to enjoy outstanding coffee, great food and Bondi Beach views at the Crabbe Hole Café. Let the staff at the turnstile know and you will receive a royal welcome (just as Meghan and Harry did a while back). On the topic of feedback ,we have also received calls from readers to clarify some of the details in our articles and suggest new topics for us to cover. Such contact is always welcome as are the many articles that people publish directly online on www.easternsuburbslife.org You can check them out on https://easternsuburbslife.org/all/bondi-area, and of course, if you wish you can also publish your own articles simply by clicking on the “PUBLISH NEW+” button. All that remains is to welcome our readers, contributors and advertisers to this century’s third decade and hope that our present “sombre” mood will lighten as the weeks go by. The fires and the drought may not be over, but rain is now being promised by the BOM.

Talking Tarot

greg@easternsuburbslife.com www.bondibuzz.com.au

The Tarot is more than a deck of cards. It is a book about life and it offers us many possibilities when we often limit ourselves through habits, fears, or changes of routine. The Tarot Cards are related to the Kabbalah which is the name of the Jewish traditional doctrine based on mystical interpretations of the scriptures. I am now learning the Kabbalah which is very complicated and takes alot of time to study. The Kabbalah is practised by many famous movie stars and singers; Madonna, Mick Jagger, Demi Moore, Jerry Hall, Ashton Kutcher to name a few. But the Tarot is a much easier and less complicated way of learning. If you are interested to learn Tarot contact me for lessons. The Tarot Cards are a wonderful guide for all roads of life. They tell your story and reveal very interesting and intimate information that can be of value to you. Til the next time... Love and Light to all

extended walk You can't miss BONDI POST OFFICE on the corner of Ocean St, dating back to 1907. The building was constructed in the Arts and Crafts style that was popular in the Federation period and has a state heritage listing. I pass an interesting eclectic mix of Russian, European, Jewish shops, such as, Russkis Deli, Krinskys, Kemeny's to name a few.

5

Did you know that in 1880s Waverley Cricket Club gained approval to construct a pitch. then in 1890, the oval was created, and in 1898 the Waverley District Baseball Club was founded .

Iconic, KEMENY'S, opened in 1960, and was a pioneer of wine retail in Australia. Kemeny's, with the introduction of the mail order business in 1990s, quickly gained a reputation for the fastest liquor delivery across Australia.

The first pavilion was built by the Waverley Cricket Club in the 1890s and Council built a second pavilion in 1908 with expanded facilities for the benefit of the cricketers and the public. This Pavilion was replaced in 1939, the Council accepted a tender of £5,992 for the construction of a new pavilion. The foundation stone of the pavilion was laid by the Hon. Alexander Mair, NSW Premier, on Oct 7, 1939. Waverley Council passed a motion in April 2012 to re-name the new Waverley Park Pavilion the 'Margaret Whitlam Recreation Centre', in honour of the long association the late Margaret Whitlam, AO, who was born and raised in Bondi. In their later years, Margaret and Gough Whitlam returned to the eastern suburbs, and Margaret was known to visit her favourite shops and cafes.

2

Parallel to Waverley Oval, I pass a bus stop which was once a tramshed. Large waiting sheds were erected at many tram stops, especially where there might be a crowd of shoppers, or a lot of people going to a sporting event. Notice the little window, so people seated on the bench inside can see if their tram is coming.

Heading down Bondi Rd I pass the WAVERLEY WOOLLAHRA ART SCHOOL, which has been in operation since the 1850s. This present building was built in 1914, and since 1968, it has provided high quality art education by practising artists. With an impressive alumni of emerging and prizing winning artists, it is the arts hub of Sydney’s eastern suburbs, offering a range of art courses, talks, workshops, residencies and shows.

3

4

6 On the same block is, RUSSKIS DELI which stocks an enormous amount of Russian delicacies, and mouth watering treats. Hard not be tempted by the hand-made Russian-style traditional dumplings with different fillings from the delicious savoury meat or pork to sweet cherry. Forget the diet! Hidden, and probably forgotten, is a community art project traffic signal box on Watson St commemorating the trams that once travelled down Bondi Rd. If you want to extend this walk head down Wellington St, and take a look inside ST PATRICKS CHURCH then head to BONDI PUBLIC SCHOOL established in 1883 which has had a long and continuous history in public education. There are now a total of 595 students across 24 classes. On the corner of Castlefield St, you can't miss the art wall which says "Welcome to Bondi Beach."

7

I pass the historic ROYAL HOTEL, built in 1901-02. In February 1907, the Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club was formed at a meeting in this hotel, making it the oldest surf life-saving club in the world.

8 Next door is the MASONIC CENTRE which doubles up as the Masons meeting centre and a Russian themed restaurant called RUSSIAN NIGHTS, established in 1970. This restaurant has had a long and colourful history and has seen a number of owners come through. The restaurant was previously known as ODESSA ON BONDI as well as SKAZKA. It has been expanded over the years to the current state of a modern function centre catering for up to 250 people.

.

Bondi Rd was once serviced by electric trams. From 1902 to 1960, services to Bondi, Bondi Beach and North Bondi ran via Bondi Rd or Bellevue Hill. On the descent to Bondi Beach, trams entered Campbell Pde via an under pass at a point where Bondi Rd was too steep 9 (now a block of units), you can see this at the end of Bondi Rd heading towards Hunter Park. Don't miss Bondi Junction walk in next edition.

“People in our community are wanting to know how they can help. The best way you can help right now is to donate money. However, we will be talking to our fellow councils in affected areas to see what they need from us once the devastation settles and there is a clearer idea of what is needed in terms of services, equipment and goods,” said Mayor Masselos. “Waverley Council wants those in the affected communities to know the Waverley community care and we are here to help however we can.”

FREE ENERGY SAVING ADVICE FOR WAVERLEY RESIDENTS

Waverley Council has engaged the Australian Energy Foundation to provide free energy saving advice to residents. Residents wishing to save on energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint are encouraged to contact the Australian Energy Foundation for free advice and discounted products for solar power, pool pumps, LED lighting, insulation, reversecycle air-conditioners, window films and hot water heat pumps. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said the partnership with the Foundation is as a result of the Renewable Energy Master Plan developed by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils to which Waverley Council belongs.

GREEN LIGHT FOR BONDI PAVILION RESTORATION

Waverley Council is scheduled to begin its restoration of the iconic Bondi Pavilion in May 2020 after the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel approved the Council’s development application. “We are very excited to have the green light to restore the Pavilion to its former glory with a detailed design that has been guided by the Bondi Pavilion Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and extensive community consultation,” Mayor Masselos said. “The community sees the ‘Pav’ as the as the ‘Town Hall’ of Bondi and we are proud to be retaining the Pavilion as a community and cultural hub.”

BONDI TO MANLY WALK NOW OFFICIALLY OPEN

The Bondi to Manly, 80km public walking track is now officially open. Walkers will be able to set out from Bondi Beach, and follow the distinctive Aboriginal Whale Symbol signs, installed along the walking path, all the way to Manly. Another offer popular with customers is GET iT FiXT’s A-grade refurbished iPhones. “We give a 12-month warranty on any refurbished device and on any refurbished Apple device, which is exactly the same as Apple,” Paul says. Refurbished phones range in price from the iPhone 6S at $299 up to an iPhone 10 at $769. Mobile phones are nowadays essential in daily life as well as businesses – GET iT FiXT recognises this: “Having a reliable, working phone is crucial these days,” Paul states.

This diversification has given him a unique perspective and appreciation, resulting in his business going from strength-to-strength. All phones, including Samsung and Androids, are repaired with quality parts. “Around six months ago I decided to go 100 per cent OEM – that means we use only original (equipment) manufacturers’ parts, and that’s added that level of quality that you don’t get in many places,” Paul observes. Most repairers use “After Market” parts because they’re half price or less however those parts don’t deliver on quality.

18 CARS

Ed 16, Jan - Feb 2020

40 YEARS APART 1965 Austin Morris Mini & 2005 BMW Mini

The 1965 Mini is the best selling British car in history – 5.3 million cars produced. The brief was to produce a car 10 x 4 x 4ft and 6ft of the 10ft was for passengers – an impossible task at the time. Designer and builder of an armoured car, an amphibious tank and a motorised wheelbarrow, Alexander Issigonis took on the task. His ground breaking innovations are still in the other BMW Mini in the picture built in 2005, like front wheel drive, a transverse engine, phenomenal space, wheels efficiently at the side and much more. The first one was launched with great fanfare by a magician, who held a crowd spellbound as he “magically” unpacked this tiny car containing 4 adults and all their holiday stuff. At Edgecliff Automotive, we have an original Mini, which is well cared for... people who walk past the workshop, usually go straight to the Mini ignoring the exotic cars; Porsches, BMW’s, Mercedes and Audi’s.

did you know? • Following the official launch of the Mini in 1959, it wasn't long after when Morris Minor Mini became the first British car ever to sell more than 1,000,000 automobiles.

Looking after your car's air-conditioning system Inside the system the pressure can remain high whilst the temperature is reduced. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself.

• Over 5.3 million classic Minis were released up until the year 2000, and due to this fact, the Mini has become the most popular British vehicle in the history of the car industry. • In 1991, Autocar magazine voted Mini "The greatest car of all time". • The record for number of people crammed into a Mini is 27, and the largest line of Mini drivers ever to form a convoy is 299. • Racing driver, Stirling Moss, was banned for a year back in 1961 for speeding in a Mini while testing it for a Sunday paper.

Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location.

COOPER PARK GARAGE

Heat will always move from a hot material to a cold one making heating and air-conditioning possible; energy must flow from a higher state (warm) to a lower state (cold).

Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your airconditioning and on-going ozone protection. When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. Josh (Edgecliff Automotive) and Jeff (Cooper Park Garage) recommend an annual check and a service every 2 years. Statistics say that in a new vehicle there is a 20-30% loss of gas over a 2 year period.

Sustainable road resurfacing

1,696,579 plastic bags, 316,029 glass bottles and 38,682 waste toner cartridges are being used to resurface roads at multiple sites in the Woollahra Municipality through a trial of innovative new product Reconophalt.

RECONOPHALT RESURFACING AT OLD SOUTH HEAD RD, VAUCLUSE The mix of recycled plastic, glass and reclaimed asphalt, which is stronger and longer-lasting than traditional asphalt, is being installed at sites in Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Double Bay, Paddington, Woollahra and Darling Point, helping to substantially reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.

Free e-waste collection service

To help address the growing problem of plastics entering our environment and prevent unwanted electronic products from ending up as toxic landfill, Woollahra Council has launched a new free e-waste collection service. Accessed through the Woollahra Council app, which provides residents with the convenience of being able to schedule a collection for the following business day or book in for a future date, e-waste can be placed neatly at the kerb or rear lane for pick-up. Once collected, e-waste is be separated into various streams including metals, plastics and glass and then sent to recycling partners for further processing to convert back into raw useable materials. Residents can also offer their working e-waste up for collection to other residents by listing it for free on a community noticeboard. To book in a collection, log a request via the Woollahra Council App or call Council Mon – Fri on 9391 7000. Visit www.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/services/ rubbish_and_recycling/e-waste for more info.

Paddington Library - open sundays Paddington Library is now open on a permanent basis each Sunday from 10am-4pm following a 12-month trial of Sunday opening hours which saw a substantial increase in library visitation.

WAVERLEY

Mardi Gras Beach Party

Waverley Council wants Bondi to be the venue for a massive beach party that will form part of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras program in February 2023 – and then perhaps become an annual event. The Bondi Beach Party is proposed to run from sunset to midnight on Feb 26, 2023. The program includes live performances, local and international entertainment, food and beverage outlets and beach sports, including the International WorldPride Beach Volley-Ball Competition. Councillors supported Mayor John Wakefield's move that council write to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Committee expressing Council’s support in principle for the Bondi Beach Party. Councillor Wakefield said the event would “provide an opportunity to showcase the finished Bondi Pavilion Restoration and Conservation project to an international audience and benefit the local economy through increased visitation.”

Stadium challenge cost council $150K

Waverley Council has revealed that it spent more than $150,000 on its unsuccessful legal challenge to the demolition and rebuilding of Sydney Football Stadium. The figure was revealed after Councillor Will Nemesh submitted a question asking for the full costs of the action, including an estimate of the cost of diverting council staff and resources to the Land and Environment Court action. “Council’s legal costs totalled $141,568.95 plus an additional $15,000 of estimated staff time, totalling $156,568,” Waverley’s General Manager Ross McLeod answered in a report to a full meeting of Waverley Council. Defending the expenditure, Mr McLeod said “a justice of the Land and Environment Court of NSW acknowledged in her judgement that the proceedings were brought in the public interest by Council.”

New ride-share pick-up and drop-off zones

Waverley Council will trial pick-up and drop-off zones that will cater to ride-sharing services like Uber and Ola. The 12-month pilot scheme will see ‘No Parking’ bays identified with supplementary ‘Pick-up Drop-off Zone’ signs at eleven locations in Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach. A report to the Council’s Strategic Planning and Development Committee revealed that on a busy Saturday, there can be 7,000 ride sharing trips in the Bondi Basin. This had created challenges because unlike taxis, “ride share vehicles circulate endlessly waiting to pick-up riders without safe pickup spots.” The report said the scheme, which will involve development of an app to make information about the new zones accessible to ride share operators and users, will offer “major community benefits” in terms of safety and increased mobility.

RANDWICK

18-storey apartment towers for Kingsford

Randwick Council has approved controversial development plans for Kingsford and Kensington that will see 18-storey apartment blocks allowed at three locations on Anzac Pde. At other central locations, there will be what the council describes as a “modest” increase from seven to nine storeys. Randwick Council carried out extensive community consultations about the new building heights and found overshadowing was a concern. The children of Kensington Public School would have the sunlight blotted out for much of the day. The Kensington to Kingsford (K2K) Planning Strategy and Proposal endorsed by the council includes reduced building heights for development adjoining Kensington Public School. Developers will pay a levy that will fund community projects which council hopes will offset overshadowing and other negative aspects of the multi-storey buildings. There will be new community spaces, wider footpaths, separated cycle tracks and up to 200 new affordable rental properties.

Car hoons invade Coogee Housing Estate

Randwick Council has been urged to do something about the car hoons who are creating noise and safety issues on the streets of a housing estate in South Coogee. Councillor Brendan Roberts told a full meeting of Randwick Council that residents of the Asturias Ave estate are complaining of “speeding and anti-social driving.” He said the issue had the potential to escalate and urged Council officers to take action because “such hoon behaviour is a risk to safety and a noise concern.” Councillors agreed to a motion by Councillor Roberts that staff should hold talks with estate residents to fully understand the concerns regarding safety and noise.

Beaches to remain dry

Marjorie O'Neill MP Member for Coogee Welcome back to everyone and happy New Year! I anticipate an exciting 2020 here in Coogee! I look forward to continuing to engage with local business owners, constituents and charities in my electorate. Here is a quick update on some of the things we will be working on this year.

EASTERN SUBURBS BUSES AND LIGHT RAIL OPENING

The NSW Government decision to privatise Eastern Suburbs buses continues to anger many of my residents who do not wish to see the loss of services which has occurred in other areas following privatisation. Locals held a rally late last year to share their frustration and disappointment at the Government’s decision. The rally coincided with the opening of the light rail, which has been beset by difficulties and is reportedly slower than a train from the city to Penrith. Once again, I encourage you to contact our office, if you are concerned about the loss of bus services or any aspect of the light rail opening.

SYDNEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL RANDWICK

Our campaign to save paediatric cardiac services at the Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick continues. Thousands of responses to the parliamentary petition have now been received and once we have 10, 000 signatures, the proposed closure will be debated on the floor of NSW Parliament. This is an issue of deep concern to many in our community, and we are asking that you, your friends and family take the opportunity to sign and return the petition to my office. If you would like to be involved in our campaign, please contact my office.

ST PATRICK’S DAY FUNDRAISER

Randwick Council has extended its ban on drinking alcohol in designated public locations such as beaches for another 3 years.

I would like to invite everyone to join me and my many Irish constituents to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and raise money for the Irish Support Agency.

The council created alcohol-free zones throughout the LGA back in 2008 after Christmas revellers turned Coogee beach into a rubbish tip. The scheme has now been extended to 2023 following a round of community consultations.

On Sat, Mar 14, 2020 we will have a Gaelic Football demonstration on Coogee Beach followed by a traditional Irish breakfast and entertainment at Coogee Legion Club.

Officially dry areas include not just beaches but the adjacent roads. In Coogee, for instance, Beach St, Carr St and Arden St are all Alcohol Free Zones (AFZs). At Maroubra you will face a fine if you take a tipple on Marine Pde. A number of AFZs are a good kilometre or more from beaches. A strip of Maroubra Junction is a dry zone and so is South Maroubra’s Lexington Place.

For more information, please contact our office or the Marjorie O’Neill Member for Coogee Facebook page.

Local choir leaving for New York

Sydney Jewish Choral Society (SJCS) is a community on the move. This 45-strong group has sung in places from Canberra to Blackheath, at venues from recording studios to the Opera House stage, and at events from the Mo Awards to intercultural choir festivals. And the next stop is New York! SJCS is ramping up the pace in Randwick, where rehearsals are held weekly. “We’ve begun rehearsing for a performance at Carnegie Hall in February this year,” says Chairperson Anne Spira.

Choir members are of all ages and come from a variety of countries, cultures and musical backgrounds, but all are linked by their love of song. SJCS performed at a Wolper Wellbeing Forum on ‘The healing power of choir singing’, where health professionals attested to the physical and emotional benefits of group singing. “We welcome our next challenge,” Spira says, “to sing in New York with a community of singers." "Our first experience of large-group singing was inspiring. In 2016, we sang with 900 others in a White Ribbon Day event organised by Hummingsong Choirs, of Australia’s Got Talent fame."

SYDNEY JEWISH CHORAL SOCIETY

She explains: “We’ve been invited to perform in New York, in a Distinguished Concert Singers International event with around 200 other international singers, on Feb 17, 2020.

“Now we’ll be joining singers from across the globe in three days of rehearsal, culminating in a concert in one of the world’s best venues, Carnegie Hall.”

We’ll be performing Bernstein’s 'Chichester Psalms', which we performed last year at The Great Synagogue, to honour the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.”

AVRIL JANKS

Spira adds, “One the great things about our choir is the variety of performance venues. Recently, it was International Grammar School in Ultimo – we celebrated our Musical Director, Rose Grausman’s 30th Anniversary, as a music teacher at the school and as conductor of our choir.” “Wherever we sing,” Grausman says, “we’re a community. Everyone’s like family.”

Organ Scholarship recipient: Pamina Milenkovic Pamina Milenkovic commenced her two year St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point Organ Scholarship in Aug 2019, and the church community has been enjoying listening to her beautiful playing since this time.

She sees this scholarship as an apprenticeship. “I have appreciated being mentored by David Drury who has taught me so much in preparation for St Mark's choral services. "David has taught me how to accompany the choir, effectively lead the congregation and how to choose exciting instrumentation for the audience to enjoy. Since August, I have played for the 8am services, mostly assisting David, and sometimes playing the whole service." "I believe that I will eventually be playing each service on my own.” Pamina practises the organ for 3 - 4 hours every day as she usually needs to prepare 2 - 3 hymns, most of the communion setting, motets and a postlude. She explained: “The hours

Healthcare can be complex, exhausting, overwhelming and health or aged care can be time consuming, frustrating and a huge responsibility. Receiving reliable, plain English reports from doctors appointments doesn’t always happen. Hospital (Public and Private), nursing home and home base medical care is sometimes sub standard, poorly coordinated and badly communicated.

“I hope to move people. During this scholarship, I've realised that with a great organ you can create drastically different moods and atmospheres. I hope to become great at expressing myself in a way which resonates with others.” Pamina began playing the organ just over two years ago. She plans to undertake a Bachelor in Organ Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music this year.

EXPERT SUPPORT AND INTERVENTION RESULTS IN IDEAL OUTCOMES of practice usually lie, not in learning the pieces, but creating registrations for them (organising where stops are pulled in and out during the piece) and then choreographing that, so the stop changes happen seamlessly while playing.” When asked about some of the joys of being an organ player, she shared: “I like how I can be a roaring ocean and then a lullaby within a second. Playing the organ in a church is incredible, as you can hear how music is sacred." Pamina plays the organ weekly at 8am Choral Communion Service, St Mark's Anglican Church. St Mark’s also holds services at 10am (all ages) and 5:30pm (Contemporary).

Volunteer with JNC: A good New Year's resolution Have you made a New Year’s resolution to make a difference by volunteering? With the JNC you can have an immediate impact in your local community. Together with our volunteers, we run programs and provide information to connect people with others in the community and with support services. Volunteers get training, flexible volunteering options and a variety of roles. Our local volunteers say they feel:

INCLUDED

“I was alienated and excluded when I arrived in Australia from Europe with no English and a big cultural divide. Teaching English, I can give back to the community and help individuals overcome the language and cultural barriers I was once all too familiar with.” Yaffa, Rose Bay

CONNECTED

“Volunteering at JNC has enabled me to connect directly to the community and hopefully help to make it a better place. Some people I speak to for phone support haven’t had contact with another person for days and so appreciate being heard.” Deanne, Paddington

PURPOSEFUL

“Volunteering with The JNC gives me a chance to meet people and contribute

to the community. It gives me purpose and keeps me busy.” Kevin, Maroubra

INFORMED

“I’m the Walking Group volunteer; I love that the group is so multicultural. Everyone talks to everyone and learns something. Running this group has helped me learn a lot about the local streets. The group has made me feel more connected. I feel a lot closer to the community.” Ruth, Coogee

REWARDED

“Volunteering as a ‘Let’s Get Digital’ tutor has allowed me to give back to the community, a really rewarding feeling. I’ve seen people grow through exploring and experimenting with technology in a safe and non-judgmental environment, building confidence and knowledge.” Andrew, Coogee

FULFILLED

“Volunteering with The JNC helps me live my life more authentically and with a purpose that aligns with my passion. It gives me an insight into the needs of people in the community, especially those of migrants; and a sense of fulfilment by giving and gaining deep human connection.” Linda, Vaucluse

By Edition 15, the liftout had grown to eight pages. This proved that, with community support, a local community paper can still be created despite today’s competition from Google and Facebook. Part of the reason is that 'Bondi Buzz' is published in hard copy & digital format, and is also integrated with a Community Platform, that allows unlimited news, articles, special offers and classified adverts to be published online and easily shared with Social Media such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter and more. Edition 17, will continue to run pages for 'Bondi Buzz', but will also launch a new title, 'Bayside News', to publish content for Elizabeth Bay, Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, Rose Bay & Watsons Bay, as well as, all the suburbs in between. Further local community papers are planned for later in the year once the first two papers are established. BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS ARE INVITED TO HELP GROW AND SUPPORT THESE PAPERS, BY BECOMING SPONSORS FOR JUST $200 FOR 6 MONTHS. Key benefits are: • Your business featured in 4 Editions of Eastern Suburbs Life. • Free artwork designed by our art department. • A Free Online Community Directory entry • Readership of over 100,000 people.
