TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' The last half of the last century was not all a bed of roses, and times were not easy in the first decade after the war, but in 1954 Max Bygraves assured us that if you have “Friends and Neighbours you’re the Richest Man in Town.” A decade later, in 1964, Bob Dylan told us to “Gather round people” while he informed us that “Times They Are A- Changin’. He forgot to tell us that they keep changing and that the end of each decade is difficult to predict when it is just starting. Nevertheless, there was a general feeling that each new decade would be better than the last and by 1996 John Howard was ambitious for Australians to feel “Comfortable & Relaxed” (he also mentioned that he liked Bob Dylan’s music). In fact, the mood was so exuberant that just three years later Prince was encouraging us to “Party like it’s 1999.” Well, that was the last century. By 2010, the iPad was introduced, Instagram was launched, and Julia Gillard was Prime Minister. Oh, and by the way, we had also suffered the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, not exactly what we were anticipating on Jan 1, 2001. So here we are at the start of the next decade, and again it’s not what we were expecting. The lesson is hard to miss. The end of each decade is hard to predict when the decade is just starting, and we’ll be surprised at what we find when we get there.

All of which proves that Yogi Berra was right when he said “It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.” (Neils Bohr said much the same thing, but then he was a quantum physicist, so it’s understandable).

The outlook for the next 10 years could be gloomy, or bright. What if there is a major breakthrough in “Cold Fusion” and we suddenly have access to endless cheap, safe energy? That could reduce competition for the world’s dwindling oil supplies and make the world a happier place. Who, in the year 2000, anticipated the iPad in 2010? However, we can see that the next 10 years will be more like the 1950’s than the 1980’s, that it will probably take a decade to “Bounce Back” from COVID-19 and that the need to share information, and work together will be greater than before the pandemic. For this reason Eastern Suburbs Life has launched a new website called “Our Community News”. It makes easy for anyone to create an online community for any group or topic that interests them, from a school netball to team to a forum to discuss nuclear physics. It can also publish local community news or bring together the supporters of a local charity so that they can keep in touch with each other and up to date with what’s happening. What’s driving us is the idea of a Community Paper published by the Community, for the Community. One where all sorts of people can take part, pursue their own

objectives, and yet work as a team. And of course they can learn in the process. The articles on Page 7 show one way this can happen and provide an opportunity for people to take part and gain “Coal Face” experience of community publishing. There are also other ways to help, so feel free to call ESL on 0408 998 058. We are delighted to bring you the July/August edition which features articles about “Woodie” - The Morris Minor Traveller 1000; Paddington Town Hall history; Solar Cars and Flying Kites; A walk around Dover Heights; The early history of St Mark’s Church, Darling Point; and a feature on local charity, Kids Giving Back. We also include old favourites like the 'Bondi Buzz' and 'Bayside News' and 'South East Voice' sections, as well as, an interesting feature on Samuel Terry, a man who became so rich that he was called “The Botany Bay Rothschild”, and on his death his worth was estimated to be 3.39% of the gross domestic product of NSW.

HOW TO SURVIVE LOCKDOWN

Athena X of AXL BAZAAR

The lockdowns that have occurred due to recent events have been very challenging especially for small business. However, some people have thrived during this time and I'd like to take a moment to tell some of the stories and some of the suggestions that we can all follow should the lockdowns occur again.

My name is Phil Mace, and I am a small business owner specialising in websites and multimedia. I launched a new start-up on the day that the first round of lockdowns was announced having taking part in the government's New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) with a business plan that involved helping small business to get online and find alternative methods of income outside of their bricks and mortar. My business plan was to go to each individual business owner and listen to how my services could improve their outcomes. That still is my objective, but now sustaining your business has never been more important. The story of Athena X of AXL Bazaar is one such business.

www.forum.com.au

REASON FOR START UP?

I had 150 pieces in this store when we opened the doors. The first thing we sold was a ball gown in the window. It was a lavender a ball gown from the fifties. This girl walked in and said “I'm so excited that you've opened” and she tried the ball gown on. "I've got nowhere to wear it" she said. "Well, that's even better because now you're going to have somewhere to wear it. Cause you're going to make it happen." I said.

HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH THE SLOWDOWN?

As a creative person there have always been highs and lows. I have almost been trained to deal with something like COVID. So when it hit, I knew how to stay calm, and stay really present in the moment and not let it take over. I thought

well, there is going to be a lot of women that still want that fantasy outfit and I'm going to give her that. I did not pack up the fantasy dresses or 'Big Glammy Ball Gowns'. I actually put them in the front row. I said, even if you don't buy the fancy dress or the ball gown, I'm going to allow my clients and the neighbourhood walking down the street to enjoy them. Because when you give people joy, even if it's not monetary, nature will take care of what comes. It's an energy thing. So COVID really hasn't stressed me or made me feel that I'm coming from a place of lacking or we're going to lack. I've just seen it as an opportunity to do things differently. We are creatures that want to feel good. That's what we all want!

Then spare a thought for the driver of this Allard's Truck who found the road sinking beneath him as he drove past Guilfoyle Park in Double Bay at 3am on Tues, July 28, 2020. Early starters were shocked and amazed, but Double Bay old timers smiled knowingly because they knew that much of Double Bay is built on reclaimed land. In fact an old photo taken in the 1870’s shows that where the truck sank was exactly where “Swamp Road” Double Bay used to be. The photo was taken by Bernard Otto Holtermann and shows where the main thoroughfare of Bay St is crossed by the road in the place that is now named Guilfoyle Ave.

The snapshot below shows how you can create online news that can then be published in a newspaper, eNewsletter, magazine or brochure. Tell us what you’d like to achieve and we’ll help you achieve it. Previous experience not essential.

PADDINGTON TOWN HALL: CLASSIC AUSSIE PEDIGREE

Described as one of the “most conspicuous buildings in the neighbourhood”, Paddington Town Hall has an interesting pedigree. By 1890, most of the suburb’s renowned terrace houses had been built and Paddington was the second wealthiest Council in the Sydney district, after Balmain. The Aldermen believed they deserved a grand town hall, so an international competition was held (just like that other famous Sydney landmark – the Sydney Opera House!). However, from the 30 entries received from across the globe, it was the design by local architect J Kemp that was selected, resulting in what was described at the time as “the finest town hall in the state, outside Sydney”. It was also described as an “over-blown edifice” – indeed the construction is reported as “Rendered brick Wedding Cake”. At the extravagant cost of around 13 thousand pounds (approximately $2.4m today), the building was completed in 1891. Of note, the building’s foundation stone was laid by Colonial Premier Sir Henry Parkes – “that tireless foundation-stone-layer” and officially opened by the Governor, Lord Jersey (hence the local street name). However, in 1949, Paddington was merged with the City of Sydney and the once grand town hall fell from grace, becoming “alas…

Ballroom, Paddington Town Hall the abode of (masonic) Lodge meetings and scene of bingo evenings”. Today, the building still stands as a prominent landmark and is of State significance as a fine example of Victorian Free Classical architectural style. The impressive structure has a frontage of 80 ft (24.4m) to Oatley Road and 170 ft (51.8m) to Oxford Street, and the main hall accommodates 1000 people sitting. The clock tower, completed in 1905, is 32 metres high and the clock face is inscribed "Edwardus VII" honouring King Edward, the monarch of Australia at the time. On April 2, 1999, Paddington Town Hall was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register. Nowadays it houses community radio station Eastside Radio 89.7FM (which has been going for 37 years) as well as a ballroom, the Chauvel Cinema and Woollahra Council’s Paddington Library, which provided valuable reference material for this article. THE VIEW OF VAUCLUSE more than a hair salon

The phrase ‘sink or swim’ has never been more relevant to small businesses. The View of Vaucluse salon on New South Head Rd has managed to stay afloat throughout COVID-19 by respecting their clients’ wishes, exclusive appointments separated by thorough cleaning protocols. With restrictions now easing and the installation of section dividers, they are currently able to serve three clients at a time. This safety-first attitude reflects The View’s position as more than just a hair salon; it’s a real part of the Vaucluse community. You’ll often find the staff personally fetching ladies from the retirement village, helping

with their shopping, and generally looking after the vulnerable members of society. In return, clients often stop by with gifts of homemade jam, banana bread or wine. Salon owner Gerda, who bought The View in 2009, is also concerned about the planet. Four years ago, she signed up to become the area’s first Sustainable Salon. This non-profit organisation recycles the salon’s waste, from foils and colour tubes to shampoo bottles and discarded hair, which is made into booms to soak up oil spills.

Do you know someone who wears hearing aids but show the following symptoms:

These symptoms may occur when someone's hearing aids are poorly fitted or require servicing.

• Have difficulty hearing in background noise. • Ask people to repeat themselves. • Misunderstand what people say. • Have great trouble hearing on the telephone. • Turn up the TV volume louder than others prefer. • Feel people often mumble when they talk. • Struggle to hear sounds of nature, such as birds chirping or rain falling. • Tend to agree, smile or nod during conversations when they're not sure what's been said. • Withdraw from conversations because it's too difficult to hear. • Read lips to understand what people are saying.

It is also possible that the person may obtain more benefit from a hearing implant (instead of a hearing aid). EDGECLIFF HEARING audiologists are university trained experts at both Hearing Aids and Hearing Implants. They can advise you, or someone you know, on how to get the most from hearing technology and get back to living life to the full. Don't let a hearing loss or poorly fit hearing aids hold you back. The Builders of Modern Australia The St Mark’s Historical Society celebrates the builders of our community who came together in the early days of the New South Wales colony to put structure and purpose into the formation of a modern society in what was a far flung part of the world.

Indeed, throughout its history, St Mark’s Anglican Church has a proud tradition of providing leadership and active public service to those in need in our community. We believe that modern Australia is a great society due to a humanitarian movement which reformed the worst excesses of European autocratic social structures into vital new communities embracing universal suffrage; building magnificent welfare systems to support the disadvantaged; and, making education accessible to all. So how did this modern Australia evolve? From an inauspicious start as a convict settlement ruled by a military government representative of a classridden society throwing off the yoke of feudalism, how did modern Australia become one of the world’s great egalitarian democracies? The answer is simple. It is a value system which has today become unfashionable. It is evangelical Christianity and

the works and deeds of its adherents. Some may cry; Oh no! How can this be? We are all secularists today, aren’t we? Isn’t history’s view that the churches are part of the problem?

Services have resumed

At St Mark’s Historical Society, we have evidence to the contrary. In following editions we will share with you some inspirational stories of some of the people who shaped our modern society. We will introduce some of the people who enabled our modern institutions to reflect a fairer society and provide opportunities for all, from right here in the Eastern Suburbs.

8am · 10am · 5.30pm

Everyone welcome www.stmarksdp.org

You might be pleasantly surprised by what you learn. Many of the important reforms of today’s Australian society stem from Christian values and identity, reflecting Judeo-Christian tradition.

hospitals for all, or welfare for the disadvantaged. Life insurance and other social safety nets were simply not available. It was pretty much only the churches that provided any public support.

As historians Stuart Piggin and Robert D Linder suggest in The Fountain of Public Prosperity, the abolition and rejection of slavery, the control of ‘hard’ cultures associated with convict settlement, the liquor industry and male misogyny were all addressed first by evangelical Christianity.

So join us in our next edition when we bring you the history of an illegitimate Yorkshireman who emigrated to Australia as a young graduate of medicine and while a parishioner of St Mark’s became a founder, benefactor and Chancellor of Sydney University.

The modern feminist movement also owes its beginnings to the work of the Christian reformers in women’s suffrage, charitable institutions, education and welfare. We forget that that until people of like mind came together to build our institutions, society was harsh and unforgiving. There was no public education (schools or universities),

CLASSIC CARS: Morris Minor Traveller 1,000

Three people and one company are the major players in the story of this Morris.

1. Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis CBE FAS RDI – designer 2. Richard John Sinclair Laws CBE – protector 3. The current owner – current protector 4. Cooper Park Garage – the technicians

1. THE DESIGNER

Many classics were born back in the 30’s and 40’s, it was an era of innovation. However, there was a ban on civilian car production; material went to the war effort. Officially work ceased on the Morris Minor, officially - but it didn’t really. Alec Issigonis kept on designing and innovating quietly. Many tricks he invented for the Morris Minor were later secret ingredients of the very special and magical Mini Minor that seemed to be bigger on the inside than the outside. He innovated on the Morris Minor - the body, the floor plan, and chassis is a single structure; he put the wheels way out on each corner – more room inside. The engine could go low and to the front - more room

inside. He had independent front suspension, a coil-spring wishbone system, rack and pinion steering. Much of these innovations were dropped due to cost but came back post war. The Traveller, The Morris 1,000 was built in secret from the Ministry of Supply and the war effort and from the Chairman of the Board, William Morris. It seemed unlikely to the team that he would approve of their innovations. So they came up with an ancient tried and true strategy to protect themselves – they didn’t tell him!

2. THE PROTECTOR

John Laws had many fabulous cars bought over the years and kept in immaculate garages throughout Sydney. On Tues, Nov 15, 1994, to “make space” he had a car auction at Double Bay in Sydney. He sold 17 cars at this auction and this very special Morris Minor Traveller moved to the current protector.

3. THE CURRENT PROTECTOR

He bought it from John Laws. It was born in the 60’s and yet it is still turned on with its original key!

The wood is original. It is elegantly called “A Wood Framed Estate Car – the Traveller” or “woodie” if you loaded it up with surfboards! Every year the wood on this wonderful car is stripped of all of the glaze and re-glazed with the Morris varnish from the UK. The joints, hinges, lights, hood ornament and hub caps are original. It is an official Morris Minor colour – Almond Green. It has those awesome little triangular windows reminiscent of sails, that swing open. Remember them? FESTIVAL OF THE WINDS GROUNDED BY COVID-19

Bondi’s world-famous Festival of the Winds has been grounded by COVID-19, but Waverley Council will keep the event airborne with an “online activation.”

Instead of hundreds of kites taking to the skies over Bondi Beach in the second weekend of September, there will be a so-called “digital exhibition” which will document the history of the 42-year-old festival, along with kite-making workshops and other COVID-safe activities. A report tabled to council said taking the festival online on Sunday, September 13 will “ensure its continuity in an innovative form rather than allow a hiatus in 2020 due to the existing restrictions to public gatherings.” The report, by Tanya Goldberg, the council’s Executive Manager for Communications, Culture and Events, said the festival “typically attracts an audience of over 80,000 people and generates significant economic activity to the Bondi Beach commercial precinct annually at the start of spring.” Previously budgeted at $170,000, the Council will now spend $52,600, half of which will go into production of a five minute video about the history of the event. The remainder of the trimmed-down budget will be channelled into online activations, promotion and workshops. The Festival of the Winds started in 1978, when 50 kites took to the skies over the world-famous beach. In those days, the kites were made from sticks and plastic sheeting. Today’s kite makers use carbon fibre and durable “ripstop” nylon to make exotic kites in a myriad of colours and shapes. Recent festivals have seen flying dolphins, tigers and koalas. One of the highlights of last year’s event was a life-size whale kite. The event attracts kite enthusiasts from all over the world,

with prizes awarded for the highest-flown kite, the most beautiful kite, the public's choice, the president’s choice and the most unusual kite of the day. As well as the displays by dedicated enthusiasts, members of the public have also been encouraged to “go fly a kite” in a specially-designated area of Bondi Park.

The festival has also included food stalls, multicultural music and dance performances. “It is an event with a rich history that embraces environmentalism, multiculturalism, culture, music and art,” Ms Goldberg said. TONY MAGUIRE

ATTENTION SCHOOLS: HELP YOUR PUPILS GO FLY A KITE

Michael has been involved in every Festival of the Winds at Bondi for the last 30 years. “Our stall is also the longest running stall at the festival,” he says. He has also curated a number kite displays in the pavilion gallery covering the history of kites, the history of the festival and the fun of kites. In addition, Michael has flown kites for Australia! He has been part of a sport kite Team called Ocean Breeze which has represented Australia overseas. “We have been over to France, Malaysia and Japan. We also do promotional flying and fly at the Festival of the Winds.” Another thing that kite-crazy Michael does is work on events when wind meets fire! “I run a Pyro Kite team where we fly stacks of kites as part of major fireworks displays. We have been involved in Australia Day at Circular Quay for the past three years and travelled as far as Qatar with this amazing display.” The pyro kites let off a shower of sparks that give the effect of comets soaring through the night sky. At the last Australia Day event, Michael’s team flew 20 pyro kites simultaneously from four jet skis.

Michael Richards runs programs for schools where kids learn about wind and solar energy. And at the same time, they have a lot of fun! He holds educational sessions for students and teachers where participants learn about wind energy by making and flying kites, or solar energy by making a working solar car. Michael is also the local go-to man if you want to buy a kite. His shop, Kite Magic, had been a fixture in south Coogee for the past three decades. It houses all the materials to make and fix kites plus a great range of pre-assembled kites for all ages.

Best to phone Michael first before you visit Kite Magic because he is out and about a lot, running the schools programs, flying kites for the Australian national team or working on spectacular pyrotechnic events where kite flying combines with firework displays. “I find kite-flying a truly joyous, almost spiritual experience,” says Michael, co-holder of the Guinness world kite altitude record (16,038 feet above ground level). Here’s what he has to say about the world record, which he and three fellow team members notched up in Cobar, far western NSW in 2014. “It was all about maths and science, so it’s a story that sits well within the programs I run for schools.”

His pyro kite displays have always been operated with military precision and have been held without mishap. However, unplanned descents to earth do occur from time to time when multiple kites are competing for airspace. Michael tells of one Festival of the Winds where the eight legs of his 90 foot-long octopus kite became snared with other kites and they all came hurtling down to earth. He says: “It’s all part of the spectacle – the crowd gets excited when you have a crash or a tangle.”

Walkabout DOVER HEIGHTS with Ruth

Military Rd

In this Edition 20, I take you on a walk through Dover Heights...apart from award winning architecture and sweeping views, the area has a fascinating history. But remember if you are walking in a group to keep up-to-date with COVID-19 announcements at www.health.gov.au and social distance 1.5m.

8

Dover Heights is believed to have been named for its cliffs along the Pacific Ocean which resembled those found at Dover, England.

7

I begin my walk at Hugh Bamford Reserve, on Military Rd, and I bet most didn't know that underneath this reserve is where the Fort Ben Buckler Gun Battery is buried.

2

5

1 I walk to 10 Wentworth St, to an amazing house named "The Light House", and designed by architect, Peter Stutchbury, who in 2015 was Australia's architectural gold medallist and received the Wilkinson Award for Residential Architecture.

3

6 I head back towards Military Rd, passing the iconic 'Butterfly House', at 197 Military Rd. The house Feng Shui inspired 548sq m home has a curved floor plan resembling a butterfly. Designed by architect Ed Lippmann, the three-level home is said to have perfect “chi” and has no straight lines inside, but interestingly features a rectangular pool.

Continuing down Military Rd is the "Moebius House" at 129 Military Rd Its owner-architect, Tony Owen practices liquid architecture design projects parametrically designed using 3D software.

7 Back on Military Rd is the famous Dudley Page Reserve, an underground reservoir and park which has the best panoramic views of Sydney's skyline and beyond. The park is also a much-loved vantage point for families during New Years Eve to view the fireworks. Portland St, which runs parallel to the reserve...holds a terrible secret. A plaque locates where Turkish consul general Sarik Ariyak and his bodyguard Engin Sever were shot at close range by two assassins in Dec 17, 1980.

4 Turning down Blake St, I head towards Rodney Reserve, which played an important role during the WWII and star gazing. The Dover Heights clifftop, was used by the Royal Australian Air Force for coastal defence radar. The CSIRO further used the site for pioneering experimentation in radio astronomy related to galactic radio emissions, with a team including John Gatenby Bolton first observing

I hope everyone is happy and ready to start a new beginning. There has definately been a lot of changes for all of us in the last five months. Here is some information which I hope will give a little more direction for the sign of Leo. For anyone who needs guidance at this time you can phone me for a Private reading 0414 273 104l. The Tarot card for Leo is the Strength Card. Leo star sign starts July 23-Aug 22. The Strength card in the Tarot deck shows an Angel patting a Lion.

The home's name derives from the geometrical term, Moebius Strip, a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. With views of the CBD, Opera House, Bridge and Sydney Harbour, the curvaceous passive solar design has been recognised as setting a benchmark in environmental innovation. Its had international focus when Lady Gaga was interviewed at the home by the US internet gossip columnist Perez Hilton.

Hugh Bamford Reserve

The jury described it as “a remarkable and exquisite outcome on a tight, complex site – the edge of a cliff, 80 metres above the sea, with all but its ancient eastern side surrounded by suburbia”. .

solar emissions in 1945. The site primarily made use of Yagi antennas. The first radio source they identified with something that could be seen was in the constellation Taurus, and named Taurus A, which is in fact the Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant (the remains of an exploding star) first reported by Chinese astronomers in the year 1054.

Rodney Reserve

5

The Cliff House, 8 Wentworth St, is another magnificent house. Street view shows only this frontage (pic left).

6

Blake St Dover Rd

The site retains significant archaeological potential due to the probable retention of the original 9.2 inch naval gun and mounting, the only complete 9.2 inch example to exist in Australia. The reserve has sweeping views to the Pacific Ocean and also beyond Sydney CBD.

Portland St

In 1830, land in the area was owned by Daniel Cooper (1785–1853), a partner in the firm Cooper and Levey, who owned the Waterloo Stores. The retailing emporium was located on the corner of George St and Market St in the city, on the site that was later occupied by Gowings Brothers retailers until 2006. The Dover Heights area was subdivided in 1913.

After 40 years, it is still a cold case.

8 In the next Ed 21 (hard copy paper and digital) my walk covers Diamond Bay Gully and surrounds..in the meantime... KEEP COVID SAFE AND TO SOCIAL DISTANCE 1.5m.

ON YER BIKE: Riding the ‘La Per Loop’ Cycling has taken off in a big way since the COVID-19 outbreak. And one of the most popular places to cycle is La Perouse.

Located just 17km from the city, La Perouse is an unspoiled location with pristine beaches, spectacular views and rich history – it is named after French explorer Jean François de Lapérouse. The ‘La Per Loop’ attracts droves of cyclists because there are few road crossings, the terrain is relatively flat and much of the ride is along shared bicycle/pedestrian pathways. Plus the locals are friendly! “Car drivers in La Perouse don’t tend to display the aggression and impatience that are common elsewhere in Sydney,” says cycling enthusiast and Mascot resident Gerard Knapp, former proprietor of cyclingnews.com According to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, The Loop offers “a smooth path and unbeatable views over Botany Bay. It makes up a convenient loop beginning and ending in Centennial Park: a neat 30km round trip with its turnaround point at La Perouse, so it’s a solid way to get your heart pumping to start the day.” To get your heart pumping even more, you can stop for a coffee at one of the cafés in La Perouse, like The Boatshed. Or if you're feeling peckish, why not fortify yourself with some of The Boatshed's delectable seafood. You can embark on a ride to The Loop through Easts Cycling Club, which operates group rides to La Perouse from Albion Cycles in Waverley each Wednesday morning, with riders returning via Maroubra. And The Loop is a daily ride for members of Randwick Botany Cycling Club, who use it as a warm-up and wind-down ride before and after races at nearby Heffron Park, Matraville.

KENSINGTON'S PAST brings us Australia's

first millionaire

Welcome to the first of a series of features about the history of Sydney's South East Suburbs. Running due south from Todman Ave towards "The Australian Golf Club "is a cul-de-sac named Samuel Terry Avenue. It is named after a convict, from Manchester in England, who was found guilty of stealing 400 pairs of stockings and sentenced to transportation to Australia for seven years. He arrived in Sydney in June 1801, at the age of 25. By the time he died in 1838 he had amassed a fortune of £250,000 with an annual rental income of £10,000. He had become the colony’s first millionaire and was worth 3.39% of the gross domestic product of the day. In today’s money that’s over $24 billion. Part of his estate was later sold to the government to build Martin Place and the General Post Office of Australia.

Samuel Terry

In 1819, he had also received a grant of land in “Lachlan Mills Estate”, later named “Stannumville” and then “Epsom”. With grand plans for its future development it was renamed Kensington in 1880 after its distinguished namesake in London.

Kensington Racecourse

It adjoins The Australian Golf Club (founded 1882), has its own Kensington Park and had its own Kensington Racecourse, which was later resumed to become Sydney’s second University, (UNSW). It is also home to the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art whose graduates include Cate Blanchett, Mel Gibson, Baz Luhrmann, Grant Bowler, Colin Friels, Jessica Marais, Catherine Martin, Robyn Nevin, Sam Worthington, and Hugo Weaving. With a history embracing the greatest rags to riches story in Australia, the oldest golf club in Australia, Sydney’s second University (UNSW), its own Kensington Park, and star cast of actors, it could easily be said that Kensington has now outshone its namesake back in old London. NOEL D’SOUZA RETURNS TO HUSTINGS

Randwick Councillor and former Mayor Noel D’Souza has returned to the election hustings in the leadup to local government elections scheduled for September. He has come out with a manifesto listing his achievements during his five years as a Councillor for Randwick’s South Ward, covering Matraville, Malabar, Chifley, Little Bay and La Perouse.

The Matraville pharmacist has also flagged his intention to stand again as an independent candidate in the next state election in three years time. He won 13.4% of votes when he stood against Labor incumbent Michael Daley in last year’s state election and he believes that by 2023 he could win the seat of Maroubra.

• Community centre in Day Street Kensington. • Men’s Shed in Malabar. Cr D’Souza has also fought against over development and high rise in the Randwick Local Government Area, opened segments of the Costal Walk and National Park to the public and protected Council workers’ jobs and rights through policies. In addition, he signed the document that transferred the care of the La Perouse Museum to Randwick City Council (RCC) on a 42-year Lease. He was also instrumental in getting RCC to fund, the K2K Competition to revitalise Kingsford and Kensington, a program he says “will create 700 jobs create 400 parking spaces to replace those lost to the light rail.”

“Residents in this area are becoming increasingly disillusioned with party politics,” says Cr D’Souza, who was elected to Randwick Council as an ALP member, then became an independent before his second term as Mayor. “People want a stable, non-partisan alternative.”

And he is one of the many local opponents of the NSW government’s proposal to build a terminal for cruise ships in quiet Yarra Bay. “We have to make sure the terminal never happens because it would come at a heavy cost to residents and amenities,” he says. “It be particularly disastrous for the Aboriginal community living right next to the bay.”

SUBSTANTIAL LIST OF ACHIEVEMENTS

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Cr D’Souza said Randwick Council had achieved “many things” under his watch, including: • Banning alcohol consumption on beaches and reserves around Coogee Beach. • Building of an all- inclusive playground and skate park at Chifley. • An outdoor Gym at La Perouse. • The underground Coogee Beach facilities.

Cr D’Souza’s mantra is simple: “Great things begin with small steps.” It is a principle he has applied to his own business as well as politics. In the early 1980s he purchased a pharmacy at the northern end of Matraville which he ran for many years with a small staff. Today he runs two pharmacies in the middle of the shopping strip which employ 15-plus local people.

Offered by Kids Giving Back, a local charity, the program is funded by the Kirby Foundation and builds on the popular suite of programs currently offered by the charity for 6-14 years olds through school, weekend and holiday programs. Youth Changemakers has been designed for the millennial teenage offering young people choice, flexibility, diversity, ownership and a sense of belonging. There is no compulsory participation in volunteering opportunities offered. This means each young person will have autonomy and independence in their volunteering roles and arrange it around school, family and sport commitments. The range of times, locations and dates of volunteering opportunities offered through the program support this flexibility. Volunteering opportunities include a range of charities and face to face support for vulnerable people, fundraising support with events as well as tasks such as social media and contribution to articles and conferences. This variety results in exposure to a range of issues and increases skill sets and opportunities for future employment. Kids Giving Back encourage young people

to try something they are not interested in from time to time as it is proven we all learn best “just outside our comfort zone”! Volunteering as a one-off event can be daunting and lonely, and so can being a teenager who has different values to others in their friendship group. Through engagement with this program young people with the same altruistic values and empathy will meet up. Together this engagement in a common purpose will build social cohesion and decreases isolation offering a mutual support network so critical for the mental health and well being of young people. Volunteering opportunities through Youth Changemakers will count towards the Duke of Edinburgh program and other service learning requirements in their school. Many schools have a civic engagement component and this ’one stop shop’ offers a streamlined and highly flexible approach to engaging in volunteering. Kids Giving Back’s mission to create the next generation of generosity. They do this by engaging children and young people and their families in meaningful hands on experiences where they can give back to the community. Founded in 2012, they have had over 26,000 participants in programs. COUNCIL NEWS 25

WAVERLEY

Celebrating Bronte Ocean Pool’s Olympians

Waverley Council is celebrating Bronte Ocean Pool’s link to defining moments in Olympic history with the unveiling at the pool of a photographic installation honouring local Olympians Fanny Durack, Mina Wylie and Evelyn Whillier.

Smart lockers at beaches and pool

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said research recently undertaken by the Council’s Heritage team revealed a significant story of women Olympic swimmers connected to the ocean pool, which the Council has nominated for listing on the State Heritage Register.

Beach and gym-goers will have increased peace of mind that their belongings are safe while they swim or workout, thanks to newly installed Yellowbox smart lockers at Coogee Beach, Maroubra Beach and the Des Renford aquatic centre.

“Bronte Ocean Pool has fostered many elite swimmers and a swim at the pool at sunrise is a much-loved and time-honoured ritual for many a Waverley resident,” said Mayor Masselos.

The roll out of the free, contactless smart lockers is part of Randwick City Council’s Smart Cities Beach Strategy, which seeks to adopt a wide variety of current and emerging technologies to make visiting the beach easier and safer.

Park upgrade for sculpture exhibits

The innovative technology was developed by University of NSW Business School graduates, seen here with Randwick Mayor Danny Said.

Waverley Council will go ahead with a $100,000 upgrade of Marks Park at South Bondi to create more space for Sculpture by the Sea exhibits. The work, involving landscaping of a flat area adjoining the path at the headland and removal of a garden bed, will proceed despite indications the community would prefer the park be left as it is. Community consultation by the council indicated 62% of residents were against the plan. Mind you, it appears the Council did not exactly over-reach itself in taking the community pulse on this issue, because the community feedback is based on submissions from just 13 people. According to a report tabled before Waverley’s Operations and Community Services Committee, eight submissions were against the proposal, three supported it and two were neutral.

Bronte residents make waves about parked boats In Trafalgar Street Bronte, there is a boat atop a trailer that has not set to sea since the turn of the millennium.

Yes, according to a petition presented to Waverley Council, the vessel “has been parked there for 20 years without moving.” Meanwhile, there are other boats on the same street that do take to the ocean waves from time to time – then return, to hog street parking again extended periods which stretch into weeks and months.

The webinars, including Social Media Success Factors and Digital Marketing in a Post-COVID Era will be held on multiple dates in August to ensure that as many local business owners and their teams have access to ideas to help them reinvent and grow during this challenging period.

Now residents in neighbouring streets have fired a broadside at the boat owners and demanded that Council take action about the problem. The Council is looking into the matter. It is possible the Council will approve tough regulations like a number of other Sydney Councils, which impound boats parked continuously on streets for more than 28 days.

Marjorie O'Neill MP Member for Coogee Hello Everybody! It is wonderful to see all the businesses, schools and social activities in my electorate start to resurrect. Thank you to everyone for doing so in an orderly manner, respecting social distancing and hygiene guidelines. Please continue to be aware of those in your neighbourhood who may require assistance and support them in any way you can, including referral to my office or relevant local services.

The Olympians all trained at the pool in the early 20th century and collectively competed at the Stockholm and Berlin Olympics (1912, 1936) and the 1938 Empire Games.

To help local businesses impacted by COVID-19, Council has partnered with Netstripes on a series of free webinars designed to increase digital knowledge and skills and pivot businesses for growth.

RANDWICK

Exciting attractions planned for Coogee shop strip

A Coogee Bay Road dining and entertainment pop-up precinct is among a range of ideas being considered by Randwick City Council to support Randwick City businesses get back on their feet following COVID-19. With food and accommodation sectors hardest hit by the pandemic with thousands of jobs lost, Council is working with businesses on activation ideas and ways to attract customers and create local jobs. One idea being discussed with Coogee businesses is a potential three-month activation program to provide more space for people to gather, eat and drink and assist businesses with social distancing requirements. A part of the road could be closed to traffic and turned over to community use. The activation ideas include a ‘live and local’ stage for local musicians, pop-up parks with real grass, plants and seating, street art, giant games and moveable tables and chairs. A final decision on whether to proceed with any temporary activation proposal is yet to be made and will be considered by Council once a detailed plan has been developed.

WHAT IS

CORONAVIRUS?

Recommendations for face covering use by the general public vary, with some authorities recommending against their use, some recommending their use, and others requiring their use. At present, there is not enough evidence for or against the use of masks (medical or other) in healthy individuals in the wider community.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Currently, there is no available vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves the treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.

The disease was first identified in Dec, 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province, and has since spread globally, resulting in the ongoing 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell. While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to viral pneumonia, multi-organ failure, or cytokine storm. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around 5 days but may range from 2-14 days. The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. The droplets usually fall to the ground or onto surfaces rather than remaining in the air over long distances. People may also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face. Over time on surfaces, the amount of virus declines until it is insufficient to remain infectious, but it may be detected in a laboratory for hours or days.

It is most contagious during the first three days after the onset of symptoms, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear and in later stages of the disease. The standard method of diagnosis is by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. Recommended measures to prevent infection include: • Frequent hand washing. • Maintaining physical distance from others (especially from those with symptoms). • Covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. • In addition, the use of a face covering is recommended for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers.

COVID-19 IT'S IN YOUR HANDS

symptoms, which can then range from mild through to severe disease, and sometimes can be fatal. Both viruses are also transmitted in the same way, by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with hands, surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene (hand washing), good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue) and good household cleaning are important actions to prevent both infections. The speed of transmission is an important difference between the two viruses. Influenza typically has a shorter incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) than COVID-19. This means that influenza can spread faster than COVID-19. While the range of symptoms for the two viruses is similar, the fraction with severe disease appears to be higher for COVID-19. While most people have mild symptoms, approximately 15% of people have severe infections and 5% require intensive care in a hospital ICU. The proportions of severe and critical COVID-19 infections are higher than for influenza infections.

Will the flu vaccine protect against COVID-19?

No, but it is more important than ever to get a flu vaccine this year. Flu vaccination reduces your chances of getting influenza, which means it also reduces the risk of you having two potentially serious infections, influenza and COVID-19, at the same time. People are encouraged to discuss with their GP or other immunisation providers how to organise to get their influenza vaccination with the social distancing requirements and other measures in place to minimise potential exposure to coronavirus. People not eligible for free flu vaccine can consider also get vaccinated through many pharmacies. Children under 5 years can also access the free influenza vaccine through community health centres and local councils that immunise children.

What are coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause illness in humans and others cause illness in animals, such as bats, camels, and civets. Human coronaviruses generally cause mild illness, such as the common cold. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve to infect and spread among humans, causing severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which emerged in 2002, and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) which emerged in 2012.

How is the virus spread?

Human coronaviruses are spread from someone infected with COVID-19 virus to other close contacts with that person through contaminated droplets spread by coughing or sneezing, or by contact with contaminated hands, surfaces or objects. The time between when a person is exposed to the virus and when symptoms first appear is typically 5 to 6 days, although may range from 2 to 14 days. For this reason, people who might have been in contact with a confirmed case are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days. Most COVID-19 cases appear to be spread from people who have symptoms. A small number of people may have been infectious before their symptoms developed.

How long does COVID-19 last on surfaces?

According to the World Health Organisation, it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (eg; type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment). If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with a common household disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or

wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.

What are the symptoms?

Patients may have fever, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath and other symptoms. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress.

Who is most at risk?

In Australia, the people most at risk of getting the virus are: • Travellers who have recently been overseas. • Those who have been in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. • People in correctional and detention facilities. • People in group residential settings. People who are, or are more likely to be, at higher risk of serious illness if they get the virus are: • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 50 years and older with one or more chronic medical conditions. • People 65 years and older with chronic medical conditions. • People 70 years and older. • People with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems. • People in aged-care facilities. • People with a disability. At this stage the risk to children and babies, and the role children play in the transmission of COVID-19, is not clear. However, there has so far been a low rate of confirmed COVID-19 cases among children, relative to the broader population. There is limited evidence at this time regarding the risk in pregnant women.

What is the difference between COVID-19 and the flu?

The first symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza (flu) infections are often very similar. They both cause fever and similar respiratory

How long does the COVID-19 infection last?

The infection period for the virus will vary from person to person. Mild symptoms in an otherwise healthy individual may resolve over just a few days. Similar to influenza, for an individual with other ongoing health issues, such as a respiratory condition, recovery may take weeks and in severe cases could be potentially fatal.

How is COVID-19 diagnosed?

Infection with COVID-19 is diagnosed by finding evidence of the virus in respiratory samples such as swabs from the back of the nose and throat or fluid from the lungs. Samples for testing can be taken directly by GPs or at a range of private pathology sites across the state that are suitable for collection of COVID-19, or at public hospitals across NSW.

How is it prevented?

Some simple measures significantly reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 and of spreading it: • Clean your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub/sanitiser. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing or use your elbow, not your hands • Avoid close contact with people unwell with cold or flulike symptoms, and stay home if you have these symptoms. • Avoid touching your face and avoid shaking hands with others. • Try to maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others as much as possible, and avoid crowded places.

Is there a cure or vaccine?

There are no vaccines that protect against COVID-19. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19. Early diagnosis and general supportive care are important. Most of the time, symptoms will resolve on their own. People who have serious disease with complications can be cared for in hospital.
