Welcome to November, the ninth month of the year, preceded neatly by October, the eighth month (think Octopus) and followed by December, the tenth month (think Decimal). All perfectly logical. And totally wrong. So how did that happen? Well it all goes back to the time of Julius Caeser. With a massive Empire to run and thousands of activities to coordinate he needed a calendar that was reliable from the Scottish border to the Persian Gulf, one that was more reliable than the one he had inherited, which had ten months and started in March. If you’re asking why March, it’s to do with war. Building empires means fighting wars, and you don’t start military campaigns in the middle of winter, you start them when the weather gets warmer and your soldiers can March. And you name the month Martius after Mars, the Roman god of war, and if you’re wondering how it ended up as March it’s because they put “ic” on the end of it making it Maric, think Djokovic for the pronunciation. Empires come and empires go, but they always leave their mark, and those two little letters “ic” can be found throughout the world wherever the Roman Empire extended. It means of the family of, or related to, or similar to, or of this group and it can be found as far north as Norway, (Nordic) and all the way down to the Baltic Sea and further. It appears in Romantic, Italic, Music, Prophetic, Pathetic and dozens more and when non Romans couldn’t manage the “itch” pronunciation they turned it into “ish” as in Swedish, Finish, Spanish, British, English, Polish, Scottish, Welsh and Irish. In France “Frankic” ended up as French. So why 12 months instead of 10? The answer is that the old calendar was based on the moon, making it unsuitable for managing a far flung empire. Caesar’s astronomers advised him that a twelve month calendar, based on the sun would be more accurate.
The new calendar was introduced by Caeser in 45 BC. It had 12 months, and every fourth year was a leap year. All it needed was another two months, so January and February were added at the beginning of the year and the fifth and sixth months were renamed after Julius and Augustus Caesar. Both had 31 days to signify their importance. All this is to remind us that new beginnings can happen suddenly and that we are about to see many as we better learn to manage COVID and our businesses return to life. Already there is talk of state borders being opened, of interstate travel taking place and tourism again taking place. There is optimism that the Eastern Suburbs will soon bounce back, albeit with continued social distancing, frequent hand washing and plenty of sanitiser and the optimism is seen in this edition of the paper. Optimism seen in the bounce back of Jimmy Liks (one of the favourite eateries on Victoria Street, Potts Point) and now reinvented as Mrs Liks, a business dedicated to creating the highest quality home cooking and delivering directly to your home. Never compromise on quality is their motto and it is one that has served them well. We are also inspired by the story of Adrian Kaleel, who chose the adventure of leaving a corporate existence to travel the world and then set up Spiritus Stones where his designs bring peace and mindfulness to his clients. We wish him luck in his new adventure and are keeping our fingers crossed that he wins his $25,000 grant. In the same spirited vein, we are delighted to welcome Rev Dr Michael Jensen, Rector of St Marks, Darling Point and encourage our readers to turn to Page 4 and use their QR code reader to enjoy the video interview published by Phil Mace. His
message is uplifting, and he reminds of two things that can change our lives for the better “Thankfulness and forgiveness”. Our thanks also go out to our regular advertisers; Beds Australia, The Bolted Post Menswear, Edgecliff Hearing, Edgecliff Automotive, Cooper Park Garage, Tracey Chandler Buyers Agent and Home Sweet Home Nursing Care. We’re also delighted to welcome newcomers Spot Painting, Driftwood and also mention Douglas Williams of You and I Removals, and You and I Ride. If ever you need to be chauffeur driven to New England, The Blue Mountains or anywhere that is not in lockdown give Douglas a call on 0418 436 817. As always, a big thank you to all our readers, contributors, staff, helpers and volunteers who make publishing Eastern Suburbs Life such fun. Kind regards

THE WISDOM OF LIVING
Rev Dr Michael Jensen
One of the Eastern Suburbs’ best-known and prettiest landmarks is St Mark’s Darling Point – the Anglican Church perhaps most famous for hosting Elton John’s first wedding in the 1980s. Rev Dr Michael Jensen has been the rector of St Mark's since 2013. People have often assumed that St Mark’s was a ‘society church’ – a place to see and be seen, and perhaps to pick up a few good business contacts. But Jensen says that St Mark’s is ‘the least exclusive club in the Eastern Suburbs’. Like the community it serves, St Mark’s has people who are living life in what Brene Brown calls ‘the messy middle’. There are those who’ve lived in the area for generations, those who’ve just arrived, those who know what it is to fail and those who know what it is to succeed, and like most of us, those have experienced a mixture of them all. As Jensen explains, the teaching of Jesus addresses us, not as the polished, finished products we pretend to be, but as the raw material we really are. Asked if the Eastern Suburbs is a difficult place to preach the Christian message, he acknowledges that it is. Not because many people have lost faith in the church, but because we tend to believe our own rhetoric. We tell ourselves we’ve got it all, and that life is simply complete. After all! On a sun-soaked day with the harbour glinting, who could ask for more? But for Jensen, it seems a spiritual trap: “I think of a businessman who comes here, who's a very successful person, but who got to his fifties and thought, is this it? I don't feel it’s delivering what I thought it would. It feels empty, but it shouldn’t.”
SCAN TO SEE HIS VIDEO STORY
He continues “In the midst of success, we forget that pride is a spiritual problem. There's a dishonesty we tend to have in looking at ourselves. I meet extraordinary people who do extraordinary things. But I think even they need to know the reality of God’s grace.” “A person who has had a great failure, like a relationship breakdown, the loss of a career, or a major financial loss, has often been given the gift of a great clarity. I find that people who’ve had these experiences often break through to the realisation that they need the mercy and kindness of God.” Pride, he says, is perhaps our local besetting sin. We like to believe we have all the resources for complete self-fulfilment in our achievements, relationships, and possessions: “What I'd like to see people stop doing is believing in false gods, like possessions, success, or their status, because these things are not divine. In fact, they actually consume us.” “Envy steals happiness” he continues, “It seems we live in such an envious culture and I think it's important to say thank you because it turns you away from believing in the myth that your own achievements are entirely up to you. We certainly play our part, but many other forces are at play and many other influences are benevolent.” “So many of the things that contribute to our success are fortuitous. Like for example, our parents or our upbringing or because of the context we are in, or the people we've met in our business, or a spouse who has
supported us. A person may have worked hard, but where did their ability, their work ethic and their creativity come from?” I encourage people to name all those things to the Creator and express gratitude. And then there’s forgiveness. Why is forgiveness so needed? “Because, I think, we live in such a divided and unforgiving world. That’s not something just true of politics, by the way. We find it in our family, in business and with our neighbours. We’ve become very
judgemental. But we cannot find peace without forgiveness. That is both forgiveness for ourselves and for others. And that all starts with receiving forgiveness from God.” This is the Wisdom of Living. Though it may sometimes look difficult, it can offer wonderful rewards.

Famous Australians with hearing loss
ACTIVE AGEING
JOHN HOWARD, Australia’s second longest serving Prime Minister reported in a major Sydney newspaper in 2009 that his hearing loss was first detected at the age of nine years, and that he was fitted with hearing aids in adulthood. =A hearing loss didn’t detract John from political success. OSHER GÜNSBERG is a familiar face on TV, as well as being a TV journalist and radio presenter. He hosts reality TV series The Bachelor Australia, The Bachelorette Australia and Bachelor in Paradise Australia. He is also the narrator of Bondi Rescue. Osher is in his mid-40s and wears hearing aids to help his hearing and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Osher is a huge advocate for men’s health promotion. KERRY PACKER was known to need hearing aids in his later years. Good hearing is important when doing business deals. Legend has it that Kerry simultaneously kept multiple pairs of hearing aids stored across venues, so he was never caught without a working pair. BRIAN JOHNSON is the third lead singer of
Australian rock royalty, AC/DC. Although born in England, we can claim him as one of our own. Brian claims the loud music didn’t cause the hearing loss. Rather, it is his love of car racing. “I’ve got hearing loss in my left ear. I didn’t get it from music. I got it from sitting in a race car too long without earplugs. I heard my ear drum burst because I forgot to put my plugs in under my helmet. That’s how it happened.”
John Howard
Active ageing is about staying engaged and feeling worthwhile. It adds years to people's lives and quality to those years. Gone is the idea of retirement from life and doing nothing but "taking it easy". Instead people are encouraged to stay active, participate in life and continue to be productive. Thienny Lee Gallery
In the heart of the Eastern Suburbs is the Thienny Lee Gallery - an art gallery showcasing contemporary art by both highly acclaimed established artists and promising emerging artists.
One such exciting artist is Amanda Tye whose exhibition of spectacular local coastal landscape paintings A Coastline and Between opens on November 5 and is being shown until November 24. Having attended the College of Fine Arts UNSW, Amanda spent a lot of time in the Eastern Suburbs when she was younger; however after painting landscapes around Sydney’s Northern areas for many years, when a customer requested a painting of Clovelly Beach – she was hooked: “I kept being drawn back to the new yet familiar scenes of the Eastern suburbs… It’s the rediscovering of places once visited… the people, the architecture, the restaurants that shape the experience and memories had.” What she enjoys most about the area is the variety of coastal landscapes: “From the calm waters of Watsons Bay to the wild and breathtaking cliffs at South Head… I am drawn to their grandeur and the spectacular formations along the Sydney coastline, but the Gap and view out to North Head is particularly impressive. There was so much to paint in the Eastern suburbs that it called for a solo exhibition.” A boutique gallery located in Edgecliff, Thienny Lee Gallery hosts a dynamic and diverse program of art exhibitions throughout the year, displaying captivating artworks by artists from Sydney and further afield. The commitment of founding director
North Bondi Light by Amanda Tye Thienny Lee in promoting contemporary art is evident by the collaborating artists that work innovatively across a variety of media, engaging a community of inclusivity and respect amongst its visitors and exhibitors. With its unique voice, Thienny Lee Gallery contributes to the larger art dialogue of the city.

When you wish upon a star
In 2016 Adrian Kaleel left his corporate job as head of sales with a Sydney book publisher. He recounts, that before that, while in New York, he studied Vedic meditation with a remarkable teacher called Light Watkins. The experience cleared his thinking and he resolved to seek a more meaningful existence. Just how he would to do that was not immediately obvious, so he embarked on a two year journey across the globe and towards the end of his trip received a healing from a Mexican Shaman named Pedro who gave him with a Tiger’s Eye bracelet and explained its healing powers. Following that, was something he knew he must share with others and, in 2019 it led to the creation of Spiritus Stones and his dream was to share the experience of healing and mindfulness that he had gained through the jewellery he creates. Which brings us to another Mexican connection, this time with Patrón Tequila. The spirit, which is handcrafted, recently called out for creators to apply for their $25,000 Patrón 60 Hands - Pay It Forward grant, which aims to nurture talented craftspeople. Adrian is in the running to be a finalist and winning the grant will help him put on an apprentice, set up a collaborative workshop, and engage someone to help with design and business development.

How cool is your car?
Josh from Edgecliff Automotive recommends that you treat your car's air-conditioning as a critical item. The hoses need lubricating, gas needs to be replaced due to loss, and the pipe joints need to be kept moist. He suggests that regularly turning it on will circulate the lubricant that is in the refrigerant. As with any expensive asset, keeping your air-conditioning unit maintained retains the value of your car. Your air-conditioning in your car obeys the laws of thermodynamics: Cold is the absence of heat. You remove the heat from a system and you have cold; energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change location. It is imperative that trained technicians work on your air-conditioning. You should not attempt to do it yourself. Our technicians are trained by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) and licenced to handle the volatile gases and complex procedure. Edgecliff Automotive is licenced to buy sell and dispose of unused gas. These licences are vital to the well-being of your air-conditioning and on-going ozone protection. When you come to Edgecliff Automotive or Cooper Park Garage, the pressure in your system will be measured, the gases analysed and refrigerant recovered. The system will be taken to low pressure & moisture removed and re-gassed with refrigerant. Lubricant is added to keep hoses and seals moist, and ultra-violet dye added to detect leaks that may develop later. If you want to hear more about the laws of thermo dynamics, and those of us who know Flanders and Swann from years ago, they have a video on youtube which is worth checking out. Put Flanders and Swann Thermodynamics into your search engine and be prepared to enjoy the show.
M is for ”motorsport” and the BMW M series supported BMW’s racing program. The BMW’s that we know on the road these days are an evolution from those racing cars of the 60’s and 70’s because over time BMW supplemented their vehicle portfolio with “modified higher trim models.” The M-badged models had modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications; in addition they were tested and tweaked at that most difficult of provinggrounds, the now remodelled Nurburgring race track in Germany where BMW have their own private facility. Joshua from Edgecliff Automotive mentioned the rivalry between Mercedes and BMW as they both strove to be the best, most popular in the high-performance market. That rivalry is the subject of the next article. What we need to know right now is that BMW M only tuned cars with Lateral Agility (the 3 series, 5 series and roadsters). “An M car has to be responsive and fundamentally keen on turning as well as accelerating.” The M5’s technical spec connects the driver to the a car that reacts blindingly fast, whatever request the driver hands down - without the use of supercharging of turbo-charging. It was not until 2010 that BMW M added those features. BMW considered forced-induction (superand turbo-charging) as low-tech shortcuts to boosting horsepower. “Adds weight and complexity while reducing throttle response” – they said. BMW enthusiasts said they liked the character and sound of low displacement, naturally aspirated engines with high redlines. Back then international regulations dictated trends and policies one more time about CO2 emissions and fuel consumption and other M BMW's were born.
However, BMW did not yet stoop to supercharging in their X5M & X6M. From 2013 BMW 3M is the only “traditional” M car left, as the others became turbocharged, which made them less expensive to make. Cars have a purpose, yes? The hatch scoots your around town, MPV if you want to do the road-trip with all the family, and that SUV’ that can go anywhere. Then there is the performance car – and you know you want one! BMW took on the SUV and called theirs the Sport Activity Vehicle – the SAV and the SAC the Coupe. They have one that has the opulence to take you to the office and solid enough to be climbing the hills in the country on the weekend. They both have done Nurburgring in a smidge over 8 minutes. The X5M and the X6M both over 2 tons need a lot of firepower to make them go fast. But, if it isn’t fast, and you are not smiling, it is not a BMW M car - they say! Finally there is the BMW M3 Sport Evolution from the 70’s. Some say it is something of a “Holy Grail” in the history of BMW M, and that’s for another day. Next time we’ll visit Mattias Unger and where it all started. That’s The BMW M3 Sport Evolution.

Emergency electricians in the Eastern Suburbs
THE WAY WE WERE
Recollections of Watsons Bay & Vaucluse
Round-the-clock access to electricity is a staple of modern life in Sydney. After all, electricity brings convenience and makes life easier for all of us. Just imagine living in a place where you don’t get to turn on electric lights at night, or where there’s no air-conditioning to help keep you comfortable during the hot months. Indeed, electricity is an absolute necessity in today’s world, but using it does come with some risks. Electrical problems such as exposed wires, circuit overloads, malfunctioning appliances, and downed power lines are hazards that can endanger both lives and property. That’s why if you are facing an electrical emergency in Sydney, it’s better to let the experts handle the challenge of getting everything back into working order.
STAY ON TOP OF ELECTRICAL EMERGENCIES
Even if your home or business establishment’s electrical system undergoes periodic maintenance, electrical emergencies can still happen. That’s why it’s important to know exactly how to stay prepared and what to do when disaster strikes. Keep the following tips in mind: • Keep emergency numbers within easy reach, including those of your local fire department, your electric utility company, your local emergency medical services agency, and your trusted emergency
electricians in Sydney. You may get in touch with Scott Electrics on 0448 145 438. • Make sure your home or commercial property is equipped with carbon dioxide fire extinguishers that can handle electrical fires. Never use water to put out an electrical fire. • Never attempt to fix or even touch fallen power lines and exposed electrical wiring. Doing so puts you at risk of electric shock, and you could inadvertently start an electrical fire. • Seek immediate medical help if someone in your family or workplace has experienced an electric shock and has suffered burns, cardiac arrest, or loss of consciousness. Affected individuals also need instant medical attention if they are experiencing laboured breathing, irregular heart rhythms, seizures, muscle pain, and disorientation. • If you have electrical appliances or wiring in your home that appear to be on the fritz, don’t use them. Call an electrician right away to get them sorted out. • Keep electrical appliances and wiring away from water. If your home has experienced flooding or water has come into contact with an electrical source in your home, seek professional help immediately.

The Way We Were is a book that includes recollections of long-time residents of Watsons Bay and Vaucluse that have never been recorded. This dedicated work is by the Watsons Bay and Vaucluse Social History Group, past and present, which took nine years to complete and comprises oral history, interviews, favourite photographs and memories. The book tells the stories of multiple generations of families who have lived in and loved the area. People remembered when Watsons Bay was a sleepy little fishing village and the suburb of Vaucluse was being developed for housing, through two World Wars and up to the present time. There are glimpses of historical events such as the Greycliff ferry disaster in 1927 and the effects of WWII on the local community. The book also contains intergenerational recollections of neighbourhood activities, childhood adventures, local identities, architecture and real estate.
The current committee of the Watsons Bay and Vaucluse Social History Group consists of eight people, namely Sally Kalina (Chair), Elizabeth O’Connor (Secretary), Stephen Curtis (Treasurer), Angela Dalrymple, Eleanor Murphy, Jackie Nolan, Jennifer Turner, and Richard Wild. The Group is grateful for the support of the Woollahra Municipal Council and the Royal Australian Historical Society for their generous cultural grants to fund this project, without which the book would not have been possible. The Way We Were is distributed to interviewees, contributors, institutions and libraries and is also available at the Woollahra and Waverley Libraries, as well as online.

Good news for Bondi bike riders – Waverley Council is going to install a cycleway connecting the beach with Rose Bay.
NEW BEACH TO BAY CYCLEWAY
The 2.4 metre wide, two-lane cycleway will run along the north-eastern side of Curlewis Street, where a number of businesses are less than overjoyed because they say it will disrupt deliveries. “We have constant deliveries through the day and I don’t think the council has properly investigated the effect on local businesses,” said Steven, manager of auto service centre Carology. But, needless to say, the cycling community has welcomed the move. A posting on the bicyclenetwork.com.au site said Rose Bay and Bondi would be connected with a continuous cycleway. It will run for 840 metres along Curlewis Street, then continue on O’Sullivan Road, Rose Bay (1630m). "This location was chosen as an important link between the two recreational hot spots of Bondi and Rose Bay, and also offers the community a safe route to other local amenities like the Woollahra Golf Club, the Rose Bay ferry terminal and numerous local schools and places of work,” says bicyclenetwork.com.au “It will also connect with an existing shared path on adjacent Blair Street and another cycleway on Birriga Road.”
SAFETY CONCERNS
Waverley Council has designated the project a “pop-up cycleway,” but that is a misnomer because the plan is to make it a permanent one. It has acknowledged the concerns of businesses, with a report tabled at a Traffic Committee meeting saying Council will “investigate the implications of the cycleway along Curlewis Street upon deliveries to and from commercial premises and loading/truck zones.” The report also noted a number of safety issues which need to be addressed. One issue is “potential conflict between traffic westbound on Curlewis Street turning right into Old South Head Road and cyclists crossing Old South Head Road.” Remedying that problem may involve new traffic signage in the form of a right turn arrow plus a 40km/h zone will need to be extended up to Old South Head Road. In addition, there are safety concerns for pedestrians, with the need to address “a safe north-south crossing of Curlewis Street.” The cycleway is scheduled to open in February 2021. Tony Maguire

Perhaps you’ve tried the DIY route, and now that you have finished, the paint doesn’t look how you envisioned, or you had another painter come in but didn’t like the job they’ve done. Here’s what you can do to help prepare your walls before your painter comes.
REMOVE EVERYTHING HANGING ON YOUR WALLS
Nothing should remain on your walls when painters arrive. Remove pictures and posters, and store away vinyl lettering and similar decor. Remove nails, pins and other items as well. Your walls should look completely bare.
MOVE YOUR FURNITURE INTO STORAGE, IF POSSIBLE

‘Climate Justice Sydney East’ is a not for profit local group.
If you can put the furniture into your basement, your living room or even a storage unit, please do so. Your furniture will stay safer if it doesn’t sit anywhere near the paint. If paint drips on your furniture and dries, you may struggle to remove the spot.
MOVE YOUR FURNITURE INTO THE ROOM’S CENTRE IF YOU CAN’T STORE IT Sometimes you don’t have the space or the budget to store your furniture. If this situation applies to you, move your furniture into the room’s centre. Put it as far away from all four walls as it can go. You may have to stack it.
COVER THE FURNITURE THAT REMAINS IN THE ROOM
Again, if you have to keep furniture and other items in the room, cover them with plastic tarps. You can also use blankets if you don’t mind potential marks on the fabric.
in your wall, the covers could end up with paint on them. Or, as painters try to avoid them, you may see a slim border of unpainted wall around the outlets.
REMOVE LIGHT COVERS IF YOU PLAN TO PAINT THE CEILING
Many home owners like the dichromatic effect with coloured walls and a white ceiling. But if you want to paint your ceiling, remove light covers for the same reason you removed light switch and outlet covers.
DUST ALL SURFACES
Now that you’ve cleared obstacles from the room, begin preliminary cleaning. First, dust every surface, including the walls. Then vacuum the dust so it doesn’t fluff into the air every time someone steps on the carpet. As you dust, make sure you use a damp cloth so you pick up every particle.
SCRUB THE WALLS
Now that you’ve dusted, take water and a sturdy cloth and scrub the walls. If you see stains or other imperfections, scrub those areas hardest. You don’t want any particles to interfere with the way the new coat of paint adheres to the walls.
COVER THE CARPET
Before the painters arrive, lay a tarp or several layers of newspapers over your carpet. These barriers will keep the paint from dripping into your carpet fibres. A professional paint job will make your rooms look more beautiful than ever. If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Spot Painting Team.
UNSCREW ALL LIGHT SWITCH AND OUTLET COVERS
Light switches and outlet covers might not seem like much of an obstacle. Unscrew the covers and store them until the project reaches completion. If you leave their covers

Walkabout TAMARAMA COASTAL WALK with Ruth
In this Ed 23, I begin my walk at Marks Park and finish at Tamarama Beach via the coastal walk... This is part of the famous coastal walk which features Sculpture by the Sea. This easy walk, I point out wonderful vistas, an aboriginal engraving, and past history of the area. If you are walking in a group, social distance 1.5m. I begin my walk at Marks Park, a lovely headland park at the end of Fletcher St, Bondi. Marks Park was set aside as a Military Reserve in 1885 and it was leased by Waverley Council from State Govt in 1929 and named after the Local Minister of Parliament in recognition of his efforts in securing the lease.

I stop at Mackenzies Bay which is a small inlet. Most of the time, it is a rocky inlet but, at times, depending on prevailing conditions, it becomes a sandy beach, known informally as Mackenzies Bay Beach. This area was occupied by local Aborigines, before their dispossession in the years after Sydney was established in 1788.

Talking Tarot I hope you are all feeling positive, things are definitely getting better. Although we have been in lockdown I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. It's almost Christmas.
You can either walk along the road to continue your walk towards Bronte or take the detour onto Tamarama Beach.
If you need guidance or confirmation please phone me on 0414 273 104.
Tamarama was initially known as Dixon Bay by early European settlers, the name was changed to Tamarama in the 1800s. Tamarama is probably a derivation of the Aboriginal name 'Gamma Gamma' which appeared on maps of the coastline in the 1860s by the Military or Naval Authority.
We are now going into the Star Signs for SAGITTARIANS and CAPRICORNS and the TAROT CARDS relating to them.
Tamarama Beach, during its heyday was one of the principal pleasure resorts of Sydney, featuring an open-air roller skating rink, amusement booths and aquarium tanks of fish, turtles, sharks and performing seals. Vaudeville acts and concerts were an important part of the entertainment. The site was revived as Wonderland City in 1906 and operated until 1911. The switchback railway was moved from its Aquarium site above the beach to the rear of Tamarama Park and additional attractions were built, including an airship suspended upon a wire which ran above the beach from one side of the bay to the other. The children's favourite was an elephant appropriately named Alice. Frequent battles with local residents over beach access, charges of animal cruelty and an incident with the airship saw a decline in numbers. After a few years of low crowds and poor revenue Wonderland City closed in 1911. In 1920, the NSW Government bought the area and proclaimed it Tamarama Park. There is still a Wonderland Avenue at Tamarama. The first mayor of Waverley (David Fletcher) lived in Tamarama.
6 Mackenzies Bay and nearby Mackenzies Point are named after the Mackenzie family who, from the 1860s to approx. 1926, ran the Waverley Dairy on farmlands that stretched from the corner of Bondi Road and Denham Street, and as far as Gaerloch Avenue, Tamarama. Tamarama Gully behind the beach was formed by a creek which begins in a catchment, near Waverley Park, and it cascades over the edge of the plateau, creating Tamarama Gully and its waterfall. In 1876, the first Mayor of Waverley, David Fletcher, bought land at the top of Tamarama Gully. He built a house named, ‘The Glen’, with the whole area being known for many years as Fletcher’s Glen. Sadly, there is no evidence of this today. You can't miss the The Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club, painted in beachy colours. Founded in 1906. The Club proudly boasts an enviable record of not having lost a single life to a mishap in the surf in over 100 years of surf life saving patrols. This is a remarkable achievement given that the under tows or "rips" in the surf zone are regarded as being amongst the most dangerous on the east coast of the Australian continent.

CALL TO RESTORE ROCK POOLS A century or more ago, Maroubra beachgoers laboured over the removal of rocks from two areas at the edge of the southern headland. They enhanced nature by creating two pools where people could swim in calm water, protected against the waves by a fringe of boulders.
Today, one pool is in better shape than the other, where the sandy bed has become littered with rocks. But a South Maroubra couple believe it would not take much work to excavate and clear both of them to create a family-friendly bathing facility.
Govt pushes ferry plan
The state government has embarked on a PR campaign about the La Perouse to Kurnell ferry service before the project has even been approved. Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced the $16m project as part of a $205m government splash on maritime infrastructure.
“We have a treasure, why not take advantage of it?” says Dr Gerry Frangakis, a retired electronic engineer. “In fact,” chipped in his wife Bessie, “there could be more down here than these natural pools – if this was Greece there’d be a taverna here!”
“The community has a beef with this because it hasn’t reached the planning approval stage and there hasn’t been an Environmental Impact Statement released,” said Maria Poulos-Conkin of Save the Bay Coalition.
Bessie was born in Australia of Greek parents, while Gerry was born in Greece. They think it is time for Australia to start adopting a more European mentality when it comes to enjoying our coastline.
Under the government vision, wharves will be built at Kurnell and La Perouse for a fast catamaran-style ferry service, capable of transporting up to 400 passengers.
Gerry says the parking out of the back of South Maroubra Surf Club could be extended into the scrub area near the pools. This idea obviously did not enter the mind of a Randwick Council official who responded to a letter Gerry wrote about restoring the rock pools. Nor did the existence of the walking track leading to the south end of the beach. The official rejected the idea mainly on accessibility issues. Another issue which has been cited against a restoring the pools in the past has been
Ferries first travelled between the locations during the 1890s, transporting passengers to picnic spots and historical sites such as Captain Cook's landing place. But the wharves were destroyed by storms in 1974 and the services were ended.
pollution from stormwater run-off. Gerry says this could be eliminated with the same kind of water harvesting system currently under
construction at the edge of the main beach carpark.
Ms Poulos-Conkin says the ferry service should remain in the history books. With the terrible traffic congestion problems the La Perouse peninsula has been experiencing lately, she predicts the ferry service would turn it into a “gridlocked nightmare.”

In 2020, children and young people are consistently exposed to a higher level of stress in their day to day experiences than ever before. Most concerning is the impact of stress hormones on the architecture of the brain. A little cortisol aids the functioning of the brain but oversupply is damaging. Neuroscientists have identified that the impact of long term exposure to elevated levels of cortisol triggers changes in brain structure and fewer neurons. Combating the damaging effect of cortisol is important for brain and heart health and one of the most pressing issues for our children’s health today. The good news is that the same research alerting us to the damage of cortisol on the human body is also providing us with a way to reverse it – and unlike other medicines it is pleasurable and painless! The secret is kindness! When we experience kindness, our body rewards us with a surge of hormones known as oxytocin and serotonin that provide reduce the cortisol levels in our body. It is basically a two for one deal, with both the giver and the receiver being rewarded with the same health benefits.
Creating opportunities for children to practise gratitude and kindness in their daily life will have positive effects on their health and wellbeing. Kindness is an act that must be role modelled, taught, practiced and repeated. Not intermittently or by default, but a steady diet of giving and receiving and part of our daily practices and routines. Improving children’s’ health and wellbeing starts with being aware of the power of activating the right hormones for healthy immune function and brain development through gratitude, kindness and the power of giving back to others. For more ideas on how to help you child practice kindness and gratitude go to the Kids Giving Back website for free downloadable resources or enrol in our programs that immerse children 6-18 years old in giving back to the community www.kidsgivingback.org

LOCAL HERO: Hannah
Beder
For most, 2020 has been a difficult year but for a rare few, it has been special – in a good way. That’s because there’s been some interesting opportunities for special qualifications and interests. Enter local hero Hannah Beder. In March, Hannah was awarded the accolade of NSW Young Woman of the Year. This is won by someone “who demonstrates incredible potential or achievement in her chosen field, passion, or area of interest”. Mentoring young women to be successful in technology, Hannah is fulfilling her passion for addressing the historical gender disparity in STEM. Living in the eastern suburbs, Hannah attended Emanuel School then the UNSW. After qualifying in the male-dominated field of software engineering, she was offered internships with Google and a small AI group, then most recently spent two years working with the Macquarie Group. Her latest role was offered to Hannah also in March – a position with the Creatable organisation, as a Creative Technologist. Creatable has given Hannah the ability to combine her two passions – for programming and education, by teaching technology in a creative context to high school students, which sees her teaching in private girls’ schools across the eastern suburbs. “[The] Creative Technologist [role] has an emphasis on creative problem solving and
technology,” Hannah explained to ESL. “It’s about bringing ideas to life… I’m teaching the students but I’m also researching and creating the projects." It combines everything she’s ever done into one job: “I’ve always kept my foot in the door of programming and coding teaching while I’ve been working as a software engineer. And this is the first time I’ve been able to do it all.” In addition, Hannah teaches at the University of NSW, Code Like A Girl, Girls’ Programming Network, and MoneyGirl as well as delivering workshops for Coder Academy. Last year she was also awarded the Rotary NSW Young Urban Inspirational Woman of the Year for 2019. As well as being inspiring, Hannah is most articulate, having featured on popular podcasts – one with Dr Marjorie O’Neill MP (Member for Coogee) in January and on ARNA Talks, which bring to light women's stories from across the globe and support gender equality. In conclusion, this quiet achiever observes: “I feel I’ve found my place in this industry, and also in the workforce.” Paula Towers

COUNCIL NEWS 23
WAVERLEY
Private beach club a no-go
Waverley Council looks like rejecting a controversial proposal to rope off a section of Bondi Beach for members of a private club. It has already rejected one application from Amalfi Beach Club to operate the facility, which would involve the serving of alcohol to patrons, between November 2020 and February 2021. It was turned down for because “Council’s Policies do not support events on the sand in peak periods between December and January.” In addition, the council said that “Mixing drinking with swimming is a safety issue, particularly in peak season.”
The finalists for this year’s Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize have been announced, selected from a record 844 entries. The 56 finalist works, by artists from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Italy, will be presented as the opening exhibition of the Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, Woollahra Council’s new purpose-built gallery space in Double Bay, in early 2021. To mark the Prize’s 20th anniversary, there will be an increased prize pool of $29,000 across four categories: the main Acquisitive award of $25,000; a Special Commendation award of $2,000; the Viewers’ Choice award of $1,000; and the Mayor's Award of $1,000. Councillors commend D’Souza for Légion d’Honneur award
The French government has made Councillor and former mayor Noel D’Souza a Knight in the National Order of Légion d’Honneur for his work on securing the La Perouse Museum for the Randwick community.
Now Amalfi has submitted a second application to operate the club after the summer peak, between February and March. While it is under consideration by the Council, there are strong indications the new application will get the thumbs-down: “Our beaches and parks are public open spaces, for the enjoyment of everyone,” a Council spokesperson said.
Concerns over megadevelopment in Wellington Street
Greens councillor Dominic Wy Kanak is fighting plans for a 71-unit development in Bondi which he says will destroy the area’s “village atmosphere.” Councillor Wy Kanak said the proposal for a pair of four-storey residential flat buildings in Wellington Street is an attempt “to cram as many people as is possible into an area solely to make a buck at the expense of the Waverley community.” Calling on Council to reject the proposal because the unacceptable increase in density, he said the length of the development was approximately 130 metres and that it took over 11 residences, along with the open space currently running behind these buildings. These properties would be demolished to make way for the two unit blocks and an underground car park. “It creates a dangerous precedent for the Waverley area as it allows a large-scale development with no thought for the village atmosphere that we residents love and fight for,” he told a full meeting of Waverley Council. “All this in a small back street not designed for large scale traffic. “Waverley Council should stand united against this sort of greedy over-bearing large scale development, which attempts to cram as many people as is possible into an area solely to make a buck at the expense of the Waverley community. In this instance state planning controls must not take precedence over our local council and its residents.”

The NSW Government continues to cut 16 bus services from the Eastern Suburbs, with the M10 and M10 removed on November 25 without any community consultation. Along with the Member for Maroubra and Heffron, we have been calling on the NSW Government to halt this process and immediately begin community consultation. I have sent a copy of my petition to save our buses to every household in the electorate of Coogee. If you didn’t receive one, you can fill it out online https://marjorieoneill.com.au/ community/stop-bus-privatisation/
Established in 1803 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Légion d’Honneur is France’s highest civic award and isn’t often given to foreigners.
Household food waste recycling starts in March
Randwick residents will be able to throw away food scraps in the same bin as their garden waste from March. Households will receive a new lime green-lid bin, into which they can put both garden and food waste. They will also be supplied with a kitchen caddy to place food scraps in. The council says 40% of the waste that’s currently thrown out in red-lid bins is food. When food is sent to landfill, greenhouse gases are released into the environment. Randwick will become the second council in Sydney to introduce the environmentallyfriendly new bin system.
COVID claims Randwick Christmas events
Christmas won’t be the same in the Randwick Local Government Area this year, with COVID-19 concerns leading to the cancellation of events such as Seniors Christmas concerts, Coogee Carols and New Year’s Eve fireworks. However, Councillors and officials are now looking at a range of ideas to bring some Yuletide cheer to the community. These include town centre activations such as a giant Santa, wandering elves and solar light pole ornaments. Other ideas being talked about include street banners with Christmas carol themes and a “Christmas light trail” showcasing the best lights and decorated homes in the Randwick Local Government Area.
